DUDA|PAINE ARCHITECTS At Duda|Paine Architects, “we approach the challenges of design by cultivating ideas. Strong ideas are at the heart of all meaningful projects. Ideas allow us to create architecture that heightens human awareness and expands understanding of the power and purpose of design. The function of tools—digital, cloud, BIM, sketch, modeling—is to foster creativity and understanding. The tools we employ vary for each project. We always ask, what are the best resources to communicate this project’s ideas and facilitate decision making? Environmental practices are inseparable from our overall design process. Our approach encourages idea sharing and collaboration on best practices with all project participants”. Taken from: www.dudapaine.com

PROJECTS
How did everything start?
Duda|Paine Architects was created in 1997 by Turan Duda and Jeffrey Paine in Downtown Durham, North Carolina, before its renaissance. Paine and Duda worked together for 15 years at the famed architect Cesar Pelli’s firm, in Conneticut. They both started with just three employees by competing in national design contests. At the beggining, the firm was intended to do just design works, but now they take place in every phase of the project. Duda|Paine is known for its work in large commercial towers, office campuses and facilities both in local areas and all around the world.

NORTH HILLS TOWER IV Raleigh, North Carolina
Located in 4000 Front at North Hills Street in Raleigh, Tower IV will be a 20-story building with 11 floors of office space, 8 levels of integrated parking and a ground-level lobby. The 328.600 ft2 of office space will have access to a conference center and a covered terrace-level with amenities. In addition, it will have access to street-level restaurants. Adjacent to it, there will be a 570.000 ft2 and 32-stories residential tower. This building will have 10 levels of boutique hotel rooms and 22 levels of luxury apartments.
This is a building that is currently under construction, but the client decided to change the view glass that will be used in the facade (it has the opportunity of being controlled from the inside of the building and change its opacity). Because of this, the challenge was to get to the right colors for the spandrel glass on the skin.

VIGNETTE MODELS Vignette Models were built to try different Spandrel Glass options on them. These are detailed models that let us explore with colors and the reflection given by the glass. Two black boxes and a white box were made to show our proposal to the client by simulating different light conditions.

This exercise was made with every different blue palette that was proposed, trying to simulate the reflection of the glass in a model since it is not possible to select the right colors for glass just by printing them on paper.

26
CONCEPT MODEL Physical models like this one were used to explore different strategies of patterns and color palettes for the spadrel glass of the building. They were created as concept models to show the client different posibilities of playing with the skin (colors were showed in the vignette models).

28
Pictures of every proposal we made about patterns and color palettes were taken for the record of the design process. We followed three strategies to get to the final pattern: non-directional, stacking and a settle one. At the end, it was decided to combine the first and third options as shown in the renders.

30
GLASS SAMPLES Different exercises were made for each proposal we worked on: first of all, real colors on paper were simulated by setting them under translucid glass. After that, with the colors that were selected, we created our own colored glass by painting some samples to see different tones and combinations.

NEW COLORS After a couple meetings with the client, two colors were approved. To get the third one, some colors were mixed to create 18 new options with little variations. From those, the team first selected 8 that were layed out in 2 pieces of glass, and then two final options that were shown to the client.

PROJECT IN REVIT BIM Technology is used in the development of every project in the office. Every proposal we made for a client requires to update the model and plans that are registered in Revit. In this case, we have been updating different technical details related to the pattern that was selected, its colors and the mullians.

WEST CABARRUS Raleigh, North Carolina
Located in a 6 acre parcel of land along West Cabarrus Street between Dupont Circle and S. West Street, West Cabarrus will be a mixed-use complex that includes up to 500 residential units, 350.000 square feet of office space and 50.000 square feet of commercial / retail space. Since this building is in the heart of Downtown Raleigh, surrounded by commercial warehouse buildings and suburbs, it is intended to be and intermediate reference point between these two opposing contexts.
This project is currently CONFIDENTIAL since it´s in the concept design phase. Because of that, most of the work done is related to context models and massing.
45

46
CONTEXT MODEL The 1-50 inches Context Model shows the relation between the massing that is being proposed for the building with the city context. It is located in a historical area, so it has specific requirements to get integrated with the neigborhoods. The buildings were made of foam, with laser cut roofs.

ATLANTA COMPETITION Atlanta, Georgia
In Atlanta, Georgia, there’re two sites (one in downtown and the other one in uptown) where office buildings are going to take place (a tall one in downtown and a small one in middle town). For each of the sites, three initial proposals were made, from where two were selected and developed to present to the competition.
Duda|Paine Architects won the competition to deisgn the high density building in Downtown. The second one didn’t get chosen for this site, but the design is going to be adapted to be built in a different place by the same owner.

MASSING STUDIES For Massing Studies, the required area, hight and spaces were taking into account. In the first round, three scheme proposals were made (each one with three iterations): the Stacking, the Interlocking and the Split Core. I was assigned to work with the first and the last scheme.

Stacking Scheme By: Ximena Montes
112
STACKING SCHEME (DISCARTED) The concept of the scheme was to create “floating volumes” that are separated by the gardens and wrapped by a jacket. Nevertheless, since most of the spaces are supposed to be leasable, this was discarted due to the fact that the “special moments” wouldn’t be available for all the tenants.

116
SPLIT CORE SCHEME (WINNER) Following the idea of having vertical gardens available in all the floors to make the building an attractive space to work, the scheme is intended to be crossed by interleaved shared gardens for the tenants. The core splirts in two and creates two different volumes that intersect.

ASHVILLE UNC MASTER PLAN Ashville, North Carolina
Located in Morganton, North Carolina, the Western Piedmont Community College is a campus of 300 acres with rolling hills, lush foliage, a pond and a tennis court.
This is not a current project from the office. This was a fast task where Ii just had to help them by creatng analysis diagrams for a presentation they’re going to present on an interview to appy to get to design the project. It consists in designing the new Master Plan for the campus and some buildings that will be proposed. My work here is to create some of the diagrams that let the client know about our understanding of the site.
119
PARKING FOR RESIDENT STUDENTS We identified the Parking spots that are destinated for Students living on campus and public in general, highlighting the fact that all of them are not that close to the classroom buildings. Resident students don’t have spots available in shared parking.

PATHWAYS AND CONNECTIONS We identified the main roads, the main entrances to each campus or building in the site, connection roads (between different propoerties) and pedestrian paths. Our interest was to understand timing in rides and walks inside the site and to Downtown Morganton.

FINAL REFLECTION Working for Duda|Paine was a great learning experience since the first day, both in a professional and personal way. Getting to work in large scale projects with different construction systems comparing to the ones we use in Colombia, being part of client and pricing meetings and working to accomplish goals for specific deadlines is something that completely changed my perspective of the profession of Architecture and gave me the opportunity to improve my skills in a many areas. Besides that, I learned a lot by working in different teams and interacting with very talented Architects with different perspectives. “It doesn’t matter if we don’t win a project since we’re proud of the job we did” - Turan Duda
