TERRITORY REGIONAL SCALE
The Groane’s park is part of the great natural system of the Lombardy region. It is one of the region’s protected areas due to its environmental value inside the city.
A natural heritage comprised of meadows, forests, and water streams. Also, the Groane’s park is characterized by humid forests and brughiere lands.

The park’s arid, clayey terrain did not allow agricultural development, but could be used for extravite activities for brick facturation and the installation of military camps.
Initially, the reddish clay was extracted since the XXVI century, this color was due to the presence of iron oxide which also made it suitable for making solid bricks.
Thus, for its production, pinion furnaces were built, which transformed the landscape of the territory giving it a new recognizable anthropic character. Also the activity compensated for the lack of industries and agriculture activities due to the infertility of the soil.
Hence the Brugheria lands in Lombardy combined a mixed economy between industry and agriculture. The industry, as the main driver of the economy in the area, promoted the construction of canals at the service of navigation for the transport of poor goods (coal, wood, peat, lime and granite), and additionally as irrigation that also allowed the development of agricultural activities.
On the other hand, the territory functioned as a military training zone. The Austrians were the first to realize the utility of this place for strategic purposes, which without the pitfall of agricultural fields, had turned out to be an extraordinary training ground for troops. Furthermore, the royal army built the ammunition depot at Ceriano Laghetto, using the Novara Seregano railway line.
After the Second World War, with the urban explosion and the industrialization of the entire area, the ammunition depot became a potential danger for the city. Today these embankments are buried under dense vegetation. Thus, in the early years of the 20th century, the industry transformed the aggressive chemical industries of explosives into chemical intermediates industries for the organic and inorganic chemical sectors and other industrial sectors.
Finally, taking into consideration the historical, cultural, and natural value of the park, hypotheses are beginning to be given in the creation of an ecomuseum that integrates historical places and natural spaces, to positively and significantly influence the quality of life of the residents and living beings of the area as well as in the protection of the remaining natural spaces.
ANALYSIS MAPS
PROVINCIAL-SCALE
Inside the park there are special zones of conservation, protected areas and natural parks of regional and national relevance.
The central part of the park, where the riservette zone is located, is flanked by roads, commuter rail lines and the Saronno-Monza provincial road. Within its perimeter, the park is crossed by secondary roads that run from north to south, and by the irrigation canal that runs from west to east. Consequently the site is easily accessible by bicycle,, public transport or by car.
However the passage of urban roads and the growth of the surrounding cities put the ecosystem continuity within the park at risk, as well as the ecosystem services it offers.
ANALYSIS MAPS PROVINCIAL-SCALE
The park is in its entirety a set of culture, tradition, nature and history. In its immediate surroundings, traditional towns are found, industrial archaeology, agricultural activity, a military polveriera (the riservette) and 40km of bike and pedestrian paths that allow access and enjoyment of the place.

PARCO DELLE GROANE
JOINING PEOPLE AND NATURE G O
A LWe want to establish Parco delle Groane as a place focused on the interaction between people and nature. This area has had an impressive history through time, involving man-made structures and zones. As for today, the place itself has established its own natural course. We want to increment and help nature follow its own path in a way users can be involved in a peaceful environment.
4.2 INTEREST ZONE. RISERVETTE GENERAL INTENTIONS AND STRATEGIES

Bike and pedestrian path proposal
Taking into account the existing paths and circuits within the park, different strategies are proposed:
First, connect the riservette with the existing 40km bicycle and pedestrian network of the big groane park.
Second, use some of the existant minor canals that cross near the reserve to integrate them into the project.
Third, connect the activities to be developed within the reserve with the sites and industries of relevant cultural interest in the sector.
V I L L A G G I O A CAN
EXISTING INFRASTUCTURE
The existan multiple buildings can be re adapted to a new use and some that can we refurbished and renovated. Water is a key stratgy for us, and this map shows where the swamps and water systems.
At the same time, its crucial to understand the canals that soround Groane, since the idea is join them with the existent ones inside. With this, we notice that Parco delle Groane has a lot of potential to join people and nature

WHY UNDERSTAND ITS LIFE CYCLE?
- Crucial step in the food chain.
- Beneficial to create a wet-life zone.
- Easy to create habitat.
- Fast and prolific breeding.
- Long life span (5-12 years).
