-OBJECT & DIGITAL MODEL

-MEASURED DRAWINGS

The material system I chose was the paper umbrella which was Skin & Bone structure. The umbrella consists of ribs, stretchers, and tube (bone structure) which are used to support the paper cloth (skin structure) that covers and protects the bone structure.

6

Section and elevation drawings. -Searched the prespective view of umbrella on internet -Did the drawing with real measurement.

In order to measure the umbrella accurately , I chose its open status as my measured drawings. -Roughly measured the height and width of the umbrella to determine the approximate size -Used ruler to scale the different components of the umbrella, including length of the tube, ribs, stretchers, base and ferrule -Used compasses to measure the dameter of the runner, streccher, ferrule and base.

-ANALYSIS

-SKETCH MODEL

The umbrella is made of paper(skin) and wood(bone) and can be simply seem as a combination of a triangle and a line. The wooden tube and stretchers support the whole structure.

ThE structure system of this stekch model I worked with is bone and skin system which is the same as unmbrella.

The runner controls the stretchers to make the umbrella do the extend(open) and retract(closed) movement.

Similal to the structure of stretcher, rib and tube, the chair responded to the principle of triangle stability, triangle shape supports the whole strcuture stable.

The cloth of the umbrella can be simply made by folding a circular piece of paper in half and half along with the dot line above.

The iron wire threads all the timbers to make every components movable (like the runner of the umbrella, push the runner up, the whole structure will also goes up and expand. Same work on this chair, mover one leg, the whole structure willl move simultaneously.

The more the numbers of flods, the more creases showed on the paper skin which is for insetting the ribs to form a completed object.

M1 1.0 IDEATION -SKETCH DESIGN

Stekch Design #2 Key words: Claws, Horrible and Extend The appreaence of the claws first give people a sense of uncomfortable and horrible feeling. The claws cover all the upper part of the body give wearer protection and the wearer can whether extend or close the claws as they want base on different situation.

M2 DESIGN Personal Space

Sketch Design #1 Key word: Mask, Translucent and geoetric The mask covers wearer’s eyes to prevent any eye contact and it also stops the communication before stranger get in touch with the wearer. Thr geometric shape also protect wearer’s arms and the spiculate triangle on the hand can be used as a weapon when wearer feell threet. 10

Sketch Design #3 Key words: Triangle, Opaque, Cage and Geometric The triangle has a stability theorem, it makes wearer feel steady. But the tips which extrude outside the body. The opaque cloth make the stranger can not see through the body and can not get closer to the wearer. 11

2.0 Design -Precedence

-Design Development

→ Combining three ideas from group members. -Idea 1 focused on object open and close to respond the boundaries of the wearer’s perosonal space. -Idea 2 used opaque skin to cover the body and placed over the bones in a strategic manner -Idea 3 established different layers of the wearer;s perosonal boundaries which varies for different parts of the body.

Developed idea -It uses the mechanism of the umbrella which opens and closeds ore ecpanding and retracring to respond to different situations that the wearer is in. -The object should allow interaction with people the wearer has a close relationship with. -We valued our perosonal space around the back area, hence the object with different layers will be placed on the back. Digital Model -The skin was structured in a manner to reflect to the wearer’s idea of personal soace. -Certain parts were blocked and some parts were left hollo could make the wearer feel uncomfortable once the perosonal space is invaded

In developing the design, we looked at the Burnham Pavilion by Zaha Hadid Architects. The superimposistions of spatial structure with looming hidden traces by using stretchable facbric is a hightlight of the whole design. The pavilion distibutes each cladddings in different size and special comformation to place them over the bones

CLOSED

Apply to the idea of Burnham Pavilion. We changed the inital idea to use a stretchable fabric to cover the bones and this incorporate the idea of indistinct traces. And apply to the different size of claddings on Burnham pavilion, we changed to make the layers in different length and overlay to each other.

M2 2.0 DESIGN -PROTOTYPE & TECTING AFFECT

M3 FABRICATION

We tried out few protoypes to text our idea and we worked out that each layers should connected by a wire with the pivot point to allow rotation. Instead of pulling, the string is release which allows gravity to help ease the opening of the object. The wearer can control the boundaries of the personal space by simply releasing the string in varying degrees. 16

INTRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

-DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & PROTOTYPE

Initially, we determined the open status of the umbrella works as a protection of the bone structure from the weather, so we apply this idea to our design. The prototype that we tried before show the mechanism of open & close respond the personal space in different environment.

During the idea development, we first valued our back as our most important space. But it seems too mass at the back if we wear the whole structure, then we considered the gender of the wearer. For female, she might valued her chest area as her most important space, so we decide to extand our strucutre to the front of the wearer and this also created balance for the whole structure.

18

We first started with the mechanism of the structure, we used a string to connect the front and back structure together in order to open and close simultaneously. We tested it by using a protytpe, once we moved the string up or down, the front and back structure also moved together.

We tried different way to present the bone and skin structure, used stetchable fabric connect two bones together or used a string to pull the middle of the fabric up which we thought it was a very special presentation of the bond and skin structure.

Picture on the left are the digital model of our current design which show how the front and back structure look like in human body

-DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & DIGITAL MODEL

After we decided manner of how the skin and bone structure respond each other. Then we tried different way to connect the skin and bone together. First, we used double-side adhesive tape to attach the fabric on the bone, it sticked well at the beginning, but gradually become loosen once we did too much movement. Secondly, we tried to sew the skin on the bone as it was much stronger than before. However, the line that we used to sew the fabric will be seem on the bone which make the model look not very good.

-FINAL PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT & OPTIMISATION

In final model making, we found the material of the pivot that we used before was not strong enought to fix every layer together and keep them stable, so we decided to use the pipe-like material which looks much better and much stronger than the raw iron wire. In order to strengthen it, we put an additional wire throught the pipe to precvent it from breaking. Our original attempt of connecting the structure tho the body was to sew the base directly on the clothe. However, it does not look good, so we added some holes on the bones and sew the line through the bone without affecting the appearance of the model and it alos fixate the base on it and not more loosen.

Moreover, the material of the skin that we used was a very stretchable fabric which was silk stocking, it can be stretched from every direction and it was strong enough to hold the bone structure without being teared. 20

-DIGITAL MODEL & ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS

-COMPELETED 2ND SKIN

This image shows the front structure when the whole structure is opened. It consists with three layers in different size which is also small than the layers on the back structure. The three pictures on the left shows the digital model of our final bone&skin structure. (Including opened and closed status. The picutures above are the assembly drawing of the front and back strcuture. The two top pictures show the front structure is made of three layers, and bottom two shows the back structure which consists five layers, all of them are in different size.

22

This image shows the front and back structure both open. It also shows the back structure which are two large scale bone structure and each of them have five different layers. The wearer can control the boundaries of personal space by releasing the string in varing degrees depending on the people whether he/she is close to the wearer

The image on the left shows how the whole bone&skin structure looks like on a female body. It can be seem that the entire prototype cover most of the upper body of the wearer which provide a protection to the wearer .

-COMPELETED 2ND SKIN

M4 REFLECTION The second skin design maps the boundaries of the wearer’s personal space and it can be changed depending on different situation by simply releasing the string in varing degrees. The entire structure will be closed completely to create some interation to the person who has close relationship with the wearer. Once personal space being invade by stranger, the whole structure will be opened simultaneously to create a safty boundaries for the wearer. The skin was attached on the bones by using strings to pull up the edges to the holes. It creates a sharp feeling and also the opacity of the fabric blocks the view of the invader. 24

M4 4.0 REFLECTION Responding to the reading, I found that the third industrail revolution really facilitate our life. Such as the popularity of computer and internet nowadays which brings the whole world into our home, we can know everything from the internet without leaving home. Digital applications are gradually entered our attention. Varies of software are being used by multidicipline in different areas in the world. Such as using rhino to create an model fabrication for architecture building reference. And for this subject, I also used rhino, autocad, indesgin, photoshop to complete my task. Without those software, I might can not progress my design idea into final model and can not achieve what I want to show to the teacher. Throughout the design process this semester, the overarching task was to create a second skin to express our boundaries of personal space, as the moudle progressed, I have achieved series of knowledge from the subject. Instead of rational design, it was more about the irregular design process. And i also have a better understanding of the importance of using digital software in Achitecture design. Before this subject, I have never know how to use rhino, autocade, photoshop or indesign,. Previouly , I did most of the work by hand drawing. But now, I have known how to use rhino to do digital fabrication, know how to use rhino Make2D to create the laser cut pattern, know using laser cut is much accute and preform the prototype better than hand make. However, what I have learnt the most important thing is the integrated relationship between the digital work and the physical craftwork. It correlates with each other, the power of translate our ideas to computer help us to tranlate the idea from digital to accutal physical model. It is not only expedites the design process, but also improve the perfection and precision of the design project. As during the process of translate our ideas of second skin to digital, it revealed what can be conceived in the computer, but then in translating the digital model to physical model, it pointed out what can be acctually structured.

M5 APPENDIX

In the process of developing this second skin task, it was really a tough work for us. What I found the most challenge is we only have 12 weeks to pregress our idea into digital. Our ideas were very creative and strange, what we think and image is always prefect suit in human body, but when we translate our ideas into rhino andn laser cut, it suddently appeared a lot of problems, such as the size and thickness of the whole structure, the distance between each layer, the shape of each bone, how to connect each bone together, how we put the model into human model and so on. Once we figued out the digital model and applicated it into physical prototype, new problems came out, the material use of the bone and skin, the heavy mass of the whole stucture, the joints can not fit in, the difference between digital model people and real human body. Every small errors in digital model can cause huge different in physical model, so we changed the idea again and again, refigured the prototype again and again, it spend lots of time and energy to complete the whole task and we still can not make it prefect. A a good time management is very essential for working in this subject, I feel little disappointing about it, because everytime we have a new task, we kept rushing in time in the last few days which is very bad for developing our design. So learn how to allocate the time and how to cooperate with group members between time and work is also very important.
