WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS A SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) According to Durer, perspectival projection is a method of perceiving and recording a space subjectively. It is drawn with lines that go the the same direction share a common vanishing point. This point is defined to be infinitely far away from the observing point. Therefore, the spaces, surfaces and objects are distorted, either enlarged or reduced, proportionally to the distance they are from the observing point.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogenous space is a depiction of a freezed space. It’s unchanging and eternal. In Renaissance period people started to adopt this method when they recored what they saw. It assembles a single eye garing at something without flashings.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2

Quad Perspective 1. This perspective view capture the spider-web structure of the city adn has a good shadow casting on the figures while the structure of the city remains in darkness. It is because I want to draw more attention to the story itself here. This is the upper floor of the complex, and it will reflect on the city that “all the rest is hung below“.

Quad Perspective 2. This perspective view gives a glance to what is “being hung” below as well as another manifestation of the “spiderweb” structure. The shadow and light and constrasting with each other and add to the aesthetic pleasure.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Scene 1.

6

At the entrace of theatre of Octavia, there was a girl being very pissed of her parents, who are talking to someone else in the background. In distance, people are chatting, walking; the street is very bustling. In Octavia people understand that life is short, so they are enjoying every moment of life, and going to theatre is a good entertainment! Because life is just like a show, I used theatre to symbolize the life in Octavia, which is less uncertain - because they know their city wouldn’t last long, but they also know life is now. On the left hand side, you can take a glance of the spider-web structure that supporting the theatre. A girl is being very pissed because she is still too young to understand both the drama shown in theatre and the uncertainty of life.

Scene 2. This scene is set to depict the rehearsal process in a theatre. Again it confirms that spider-web structure that spreads through out the theatre. Smokes, clouds and light beams are added to the scene to emphasize on the complexity and intricacy of a “spiderweb city. In the lower leverl there are actors and actresses rehearsing their performance. Thinking of the certainty and uncertainty of a show and life, preparation is absolutely handy.

DESIGN MOTIF

I extracted the concept of “the contrast between certainty and uncertainty” from the text. In Octavia, people’s life is uncertain because the spider web, which serves as the support to the city, would not last long. But their life is certain in a sense that, they know their city will fall someday, so they are very likely to enjoy the every moment of life and seek for entertainment. Thinking about the relationship between certainty and uncertainty, I decided to use theatre to depict the theme. Because life is a long long version of drama, we don’t know the plot of it, but we are sure that we are in it. These have an interesting coincidence with Octavia! I realised that the stair connecting two floors is a bit chunky, but I decided to keep it because it is logically correct. There should not be a thin stair in theatre.

WEEK 4 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) In autographic practice, an artwork or activity of art could only be generated and appreciated with direct contact of the artists and producer. In this case, notation is absent or it could be used to substituted the artwork itself. In allographic practice, they could be appreciated without the presence of the artists. So autographic practice is more about the artwork itself while allographic practice has more to do with the context of the artwork. Therefore notation could be helpful in allographic practice.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Architects need new representational techniques because they need to keep track with the development of technology in other industries. Architecture design is a subject interacting with not just art but also technology and engineering. Architects can use new representational techniques to explore inovative ways of expressing themselves, as well as new forms of art, hence to bring art, technology and engineering into whole.

Reflection: In this module time management is very important. I reckon more time should be put on developing a good story and relating it back to the model design. Perspective views should take relativelt less time because they only work to illustrate the story. Considering the readablity of the map, I did not put too many notations into it as long as it could make the progress of the story clear.
