Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
According to Zeara-Polo, a sign / symbol are the relationship between “form and content” and it’s totally “arbitrary and immaterial”. They usually come with information / persuasive guidance attached. Whilst diagram meditate between “physical constructs and concepts or percepts on an organizational level”. Diagram is with information attached as well but this information is overlaying and constructive.

Week One
Precedent Analysis
elevation, interior perspective and front view of the pavilion model.
a picture of Afterparty Pavillion by MOS.
3
Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
in Mos’ After Party Pavilion, design does not go extreme within the context of its functionality. the cone-shaped pavilion provides shelters which creates local climate of shadows for pedestrians; meanwhile the use of cone-shaped roof is not an extreme in a sense that it introduce a spatial interior space into use. Most pavillions are connected to form a whole, which makes the overall desgin neat and wholistic. In this case, After Party Pavillion succeeded in its functionality of being a shelter, linkage and threshold.

Week Two
Isometric
isometric view of the pavilion model in this isometric view of the pavilion, the thatch insulationa, furnitures inside the pavilion, wall structure as its terrain and the spatial progression are clearly shown. the majority of the pavilion structure is in the biggest space divided by the walls, whilst two smaller ones stretch into the subspace. Benches are evenly scattered through the space to provide a place for pedestrians to rest; and therefore it creates a threshold in the progress of space.

Week Two Diagrams
Circulation Diagram
Threshold Diagram
the circulation path is mainly determined by the built structure. People enter the pavilion space and explore through it according to the built structure which acts as a guide for them.
The threshold for afterparty pavilion is a bit implicit. I believe the threshold in this case is created by the thatch insulation which hence defines a shadowed area, as well as the benches which offer a place to relax. These thresholds are a series of space throughout the pavilion space.

Appendix
Process
the red lines were traced from the site plan and extruded to the corresponding height for further modeling. In the next step, the lines could be modelled using ‘pipe’ command to create a skeleton for the model.
7
Appendix Process
the pipe structure and the shape of thatch insulation.
8
Appendix
Process
Reflection of the digital modelling process Tracing the plan, and offset them referring to the section drawing are the first part of setting up the model. However the tricky step is how to model the membrane (as for the shape for the thatch insultation). At first i used edge surface command, and then drew an arched line to trim all the membrane. but this mothod didnt gurantee a good shape. after the second studio i realised that loft commant with a point dropped to the middle of the line would actually work better. This is how i remodel it.
Reflection of the diagram It is a bit confusing of the difference between threshold and circulation and how they are defined by the pavilion structure. My understanding is circulation is how people move through the space, which should be determined by the built structure itself. However, threshold is more relevant to the progression of space and the in-between space. Circulation is a movement whilist threshold is a pause.
