OVERSEAS IMD AND VSC STUDY TRIP TO TAIPEI, TAIWAN REFLECTIONS BY WONG XIU HUI LECTURER-IN-CHARGE: TAN TAI PANG

ABOUT THE TRIP Conducted almost every year, this trip to taiwan was offered to me during my 2nd year of studies in Temasek Polytechnic School of Design. As this was a study trip, we were required to take part in a joint design project in our respective groups with our taiwanese buddies. This year the theme that was given is GROWTH, and we were given a time frame of about 2-3 weeks to get this project done while corresponding with our taiwanese buddies through skype and have the project properly delivered and presented once we arrive there.

“ this trip to me, really was a study trip

At the same time, this trip was also my CDS trip for Global Citizenship and I was part of a project that required me to research on the current problems of the taiwanese community and after which present our findings and solutions in the form of presentation slides when we return to Singapore, which was a graded assignment. Thus the trip to me, really was a study trip, and although there were lots of things to do, in terms of projects, i still thoroughly enjoyed the itinerary which i got to visit places that had something to do with my field of study and at the same time understand the culture there while experiencing the country for myself and talking to my taiwanese buddies.

LEADERSHIP ROLE As I was selected as the group leader for my team, I held a number of responsibilities prior and during the trip. Before the trip, I had to organise and schedule the group meetings with our taiwanese buddies and had to oversee as well as illustrate for the team project (the outcome of the project will be featured later).

During the trip, everyone was given yet another project to complete, and my team was given the theme of “typography in taiwan” and I had to ensure that wherever we travel, my team and I had to be on the look out for taiwanese typography design. I also had to make sure that my team members were safe and had to constantly update my lecturer-in-charge on my team’s status. I remembered having to ensure that my team members were back in the hotel rooms by 10/11pm and i had to go to the hotel lobby to report to my lecturer-in-charge.

CAPTURED WHILE ON THE BUS BY WONG XIU HUI

We arrived at Taoyuan International Airport at around 3/4pm and was warmly welcomed by our tour guide, which the group called “100ge(一百哥)”. On the way to the hotel, he distributed to us our individual MRT cards and a map of Taipei. I learnt from him that there is currently a joint programme between Singapore and Taiwan, which involves the Singaporean EZ-Link card. Though the project is still ongoing and not yet implemented, he said that one day Singaporeans might get to use our own EZ-Link cards in Taiwan! This wasn’t my first time in Taiwan, i actually visited Taiwan in early 2014, so i was really glad to be back again and to explore more of the country. Looking out of the bus window, i managed to captue some shots along the way to our hotel.

The bus ride was quite long, and when we reached the hotel, which is called “GOSLEEP”, the sun had already set and the streets were already filled with neon lights. The hotel was located in Xi Men Ding (西門町) which is a shopping district, a place frequently visited by youths, so the streets were very crowded, with many cars and many people walking around. To add on to the crowd, it was a saturday, so the large bus that we were in was stuck in a traffic jam and it took us sometime to be out of the jam. When we reached, our lecturer handed the keys to the room representatives and I was one of them so once i received the key, I made my way to the room with my fellow roommates

After putting my bags down and going through some housekeeping rules, everyone assembles back at the lobby and our lecturers, TaiPang and Wei, brought us to the streets of Xi Men Ding. From there we ate, ate and ate and it was a good start and introduction to the culture of Taiwan.

I explored the streets with my roommates early that morning, visiting the area around the hotel and snapping some street shots here and there. We came back by 10 AM and the whole group went on the bus and we were taken to Hua Shan 1914 Cultural and Creative Industrial Park(華山1914文化創意產業園 區). Over there, we visited several art exhibitions, and shopped as well. I know i bought quite a lot of illustrated postcards from the area as well as 1 design book. After which, I got to try Taiwan’s famous dish, 牛肉麵, which tasted really interestingly. After which, we travelled to TamSui District (淡水區).

We followed our lecturers up a small hill after alighting from the bus, after which we explored the historical sites like the Former British Merchant Warehouse and Fort Santo Domingo. Our last stop was TamSui Old Street before our lecturers and tour guide leave us and we are given the freedom to roam about and find our own transport back to the hotel on our own. My group managed to return to the hotel by navigating our way through the little roads and we finally learnt to take the Taiwan MRT(really resembles Singapore). We rushed back just in time before the 22 00 curfew!

The day started off similar to the previous one, we had breakfast in the hotel again and made a trip to the nearby 7-11 store to get some snacks and drinks for the day. The bus arrived at 11am and we were ready to set off for JiuFen(九份). I’ve been to JiuFen before, during my first trip to Taiwan, and I learnt that it was the site of inspiration for a scene in the movie Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli. This fact made me love the place even more. As JiuFen is situated on a hill, when we arrived, we were hit by the strong cool winds, that most of us started taking out our coats to cover ourselves from the cold. We were given the freedom to roam around in our small groups and spend half of our day there. I remembered trying the different delicacies there, shopping, and taking lots of inspiring photos as I take in the scenic view that JiuFen had to offer.

“一百哥”

By the time we were asked to assemble as a whole group, I could see everyone was thuroughly overwhelmed and at the same time tired and a little restless. We waited for awhile to board the bus, as the roads were really packed with the different tourist group buses. Yet, thanks to our wonderful and skilled bus driver, we managed to board the bus at a safe location. From there, we were driven to Shilin, to visit the famous Shilin Night Market(士林夜市). Our lecturers dismissed us at the location, and we were free to roam about in our small little groups. I remembered eating this famous oyster vermicelli(蚵仔麵線) located near a temple situated in the heart of the night market, and i recommend anyone who visits Shilin Night Market to taste it! We ate and we shopped and when we were finally tired from all the walking, we took the MRT back to our hotel.

The highlight of the day was definitely finally getting to meet with my taiwan buddies, Abby and Nana. As my group has only seen them on skpe, we were all excited to see them in person. We travelled to the National Taiwan Normal University, faculty of Design to meet our taiwan buddies who were waiting for us(Singaporean students) at the entrance. The university was located in Shi Da, and Shi Da is easily one of my favourite destinations as it’s a really youthful place yet at the same time there were many lovely art related boutiques which i really love. When we returned, I had bento for lunch in the faculty building and during that time, I remembered rushing to rehearse for our presentation which was in an hour’s time, and I was really nervous to present my group’s work.

THE PROJECT

Therefore, I feel that our attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. They not only constantly color your picture grey, but also your picture will always be bleak. Hence, by adding some bright colors to the picture would not only lighten up the overall feel of the image but in a way, it also helps to add a little humor to it. Thus, let us take some time to remember how such littlest things can make an impact in our life. And as I grow older, I realised rainbow colour pens has contributed to the growth of my character. As a saying goes “Colours are the smiles of nature”.

I remember my very first time being recognised for something that i love - a artpiece that i did in primary school that was awarded 3rd place. I remember how overjoyed i was and could not be more than proud of myself. I was happy to know that 2 years of art classes at a community centre did not go to waste. Ever since then, i gradually stopped using the pencils to do what i love because i did not have the motivation. Slowly, the meaning of pencils to me were merely to do mundane assignments that made no sense to me. That was when i realised that i really love art and design. However, that love was not strong enough for me to continue to pursue it. It was not only when I came into Temasek Polytechnic, Visual Communication that I began to rekindle the love that I had with art and design, and started to use the pencil in the rightful manner, using them as weapons of mass creation. It is true that with the use of pencil, we are able to create designs, stories and ideas that are limitless and make it come alive. The pencils enable us to draw out what we visualise in our head. Without them, many of our dreams and aspirations would not have come alive. As designers, pencils are like giver of life to our ideas. We use them to draw out what we visualise in our head on paper and it immediately comes alive. Without the pencils, our ideas are just dead and the pencils is a good as nothing. Whenever we use the pencils, it gets shorter and shorter through the sharpening of it. The sharpening represents the moulding and crafting of us as designers when our ideas and designs get rejected. We break and break to be better designers. The pencils get shorter and shorter to be better pencils for us to use.

P E N C I L

Without the pencils, there will not be a mass of creation. Instead, it will be a mass of emptiness. No matter how advance technology is, we still need the pencil because every successful designs comes from sketches that was sketched in pencils. 07

A distinct memory of when I first held a colored pencil was when I was 5 yrs old. It was my first day of kindergarten and we were having arts & craft session. Kids my age were crowding around the tables and picking the different coloured pencils out from the containers. I’ve never been so excited in my life, seeing so many different colours in front of me. I’ve never drawn or done anything related to art before I entered kindergarten. But when I first held the colored pencil , I felt special and somehow did not want to stop colouring. I thought to myself,“how can something so still, produce such wonderful effect on a blank piece of paper?!” Right after I ended my first day of school , I pestered my grandmother to get me one box of colored pencils. And I chose the STABLIO colour pencils solely because of the super cool thing the packaging can do – standing upright! Ever since then I would always use colour pencils in any school projects, be it during my primary or secondary education. Drawing & colouring was the only time I felt “free”. But one thing that upsets me is that I always realise the difference in the height of the different colour pencils. I liked pink, green and purple a lot – and therefore used this three particularly very often, resulting in them becoming shorter and shorter until it can’t be used anymore and I had no other choice but to use the remaining colours. Soon after when I was around 14, I moved towards creating simple posters and brochures for random things which I later came to know as part of “graphic design”! Looking back, colour pencils are one of the main reasons how I discovered that I was more of a “creative” person. As my favourite colour pencils get shorter, my passion for being a creative actually gets stronger and now, I am an aspiring graphic designer hoping to make a living in the creative industry for the rest of my life.

There was a period where games meant more than just iPad apps where everything is much simpler and pure fun. It was then I remembered a nostalgic experience with an eraser through a game called “Flag eraser game”. Other than using it to correct mistakes in schoolwork, students also use them to pit their ‘tossing skills.’ Hence, during that period of time, erasers seem like an insignificant tool. However, as i grew up, I questioned myself “Why would a person invent an eraser?” One reason is that we all make mistakes and the eraser helps us to correct on those mistakes. However, that’s not just the case. As a designer, I’ve come to realised that the eraser has played a huge part in my life and very often we overlook the fact that an eraser could be givers to the growth of our artwork. Design in my eyes is never finished. There will always be something to further improve on. Thus, the eraser gives me the power to constantly adjust, and that my best work requires adjustments and enhancements. With passing of time, eraser becomes smaller and smaller. Through this process, it has taught me the importance of this tool. An eraser invites me to edit and try again but it also gives me the confidence that I should not be afraid of making mistakes and should be ready to correct any mistakes in future. Moreover, an eraser helps to spur me on in order to be forward-focused and also to let go of the past mistakes.

E R A S E R

Thus, take some time to notice that special little thing on your desk. Whenever I look at it now, I’m reminded of the life lesson that an eraser could teach me which contributes as the givers to the growth of our work.

The process in getting to the final work wasn’t easy. One of the reason is definitely the communication difficulty. As our taiwan buddies were actually having their curriculum, so they were really busy compared to us, who were having our holidays, thus they could only skype with us during the evenings. Abby was unable to join us for any skype sessions as she was really occupied with school work and we only managed to meet Nana online. Other then the time restrictions, we also had a slight communication barrier, in terms of understanding and hearing. My group was not very good in the chinese language apart from 1 member and Nana was not very well versed in english though she really tried very hard to deliver her message and thoughts as clearly as possible. The internet connection on skype was also quite unstable, thus it was difficult to listen to what Nana was trying to say.

When I was in primary school, we have to write a short journal everyday. I’ve always liked to draw since I was young, hence my journal is usually attached with many illustrations. In order to put colors on more easily, I always had my rainbow pen with me in my pencilcase. To me, each colour represents my different feelings; Red for passion; orange for friendliness; yellow for happiness; green for vitality; blue for freedom; purple for peace and black for gloominess. I loved to use warm colours when coloring my drawings in my journal. Somehow, seeing warm colours in my journal brighten up my day. As time goes by, I ended up finishing the bright colours in all my rainbow pens very quickly, leaving behind only the dark colours. Hence, now that i am older, it got me thinking. Is it because all along in my childhood i’ve been using so much warm colours to the extent I’ve slowly used up all my “passionate bullets”? And as a result, my personality has changed so much now that i’m all grown up?

My first encounter with a penknife was when I was a young girl of 6, curious and playful, I cut my toe with it. The incident didn’t really leave a traumatic scar, even though it was my first “serious” injury, but I did bleed A LOT, and I associated the penknife as something scary and was always apprehensive and careful whenever I had to come across it. When I started attending design school, I was taught using penknife and it was not easy. As I feared of sharp objects. For every task that required some cutting or trimming, I had to rely on the penknife. Second time injury was my thumb being cut while in the midst of trimming pictures for pin-up session. Blood gushed out and the pain came right after. I continued to have other injuries from using the penknife, but with each passing day, those injuries lessened, and the once crooked lines that formed from my poor cutting skills became relatively straight and professional. With every bleed from my injuries, I grow a leap, in terms of how i learn to deliver perfectly trimmed work, as if with every failure, the blade cuts me to etch each experience into my mind, and with the experience learnt, i grow. This taught me that we need to “bleed” before achieving anything meaning going through hardships to get to where we aspire to be and what we hope to achieve. In short, having the courage to face hardships and experience them in order to grow.

P E N K N I F E

I’m sure many of us have had experience with at least one penknife cut. Has it ever occured to you? When the penknife gets more rusty, more blunt, more short, after the blade broke each time, our skills grow sharper and faster with time. At times, we do not see it with significance in the stationeries that we use in our practical life. Through it all, penknife has been a giver to our growth.

The Little Givers

It is no doubt that even the littlest things in life, such as stationeries, has the ability to mould us into who we are as a person today. Even though, we live in this hectic urban life, we should take some time to look at people and the things around us. Moreover, let us cherish what we have and learn to appreciate the little things in life that has contributed to our growth. Some things might get shorter and eventually leave you as you grow, but what will never change is the valuable experiences and life lessons that you gained over the years. Behind every person’s growth is a story to tell. Are you ready to discover your story?

>>> The first few days of communnicating was really difficult but after awhile, things starting getting better and we understood Nana more clearly through careful listening. As the timeframe that was given to us was a short 2-3 weeks, we couldn’t completely achieve what we wanted, but I remembered having sleepless nights with my group members and we worked really hard to at least complete what we could accomplish.

REPRESENTATION OF MY STORY

>>> In the end, the presentation turned out well and my group won top 3, so we were really glad and definitely proud of our hard work, which showed us that, even with all the communication trouble we had as individuals from 2 different countries, as long as we had the heart and will to want to make something come true, in this case, the success of our project, everything will turn out well, one way or another. This was my first experience working with people from another country and it did show me a glimpse of working as a global citizen, not just a Singaporean in my own country, but a fellow member of the global community working with other like-minded members. I really enjoyed the experience.

On day 5, it was mainly visitng. Our first destination was the Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art(MOCA). We were fortunate enough to receive a guided tour, whereby the tour guide spoke in english, explaining about the individual works displayed and the thought process behind each work. I really like learning about the artists’ thought process as it really brought some insight into the design/ art process of each individual and the question that they ask themselves all intrigue me in a way. After a good start at the museum, we proceeded to try a taiwanese style lunch which consisted of dumplings and fried rice, very much similar to what you would eat in DIN TAI FUNG(鼎泰豐). We also celebreated 2 of our friends birthday, our tourguide, 100ge(一百哥), surprised them with a big birthday cake, enough for 40 people. We had a very hearty meal. The next stop was Shi Jian University (實踐大學), which was one of the top design universities in Taiwan. We were given an introduction of the school by one of the staff there, and I found there school quite nice and the curriculum sounded good. Looking arounf the campus, I think my most favourite facility was the library, the interior design of it as well as the multitude of books it held. We didn’t stay long at the university and soon proceeded to the last stop of the day, which was the Taipei Fine Arts Museum(TFAM). TFAM was definitely bigger then MOCA and the works featured here were of a different category, which was fine arts. Unfortunately, there was no guided tour, but we could borrow a electronic audio guide instead. Still, I liked the guided tour in MOCA more than the audio guide.

My 2 favourite destinations of the whole trip was on day 6, the Eslite Bookstore and the Ri Xing Type Foundry(日星鑄字行) (which my lecturer brought us to). The reason was, they were all about print. As a fellow design student majoring in graphic design, I absolutely love print interms of typography, publication, layout, printed books and illustration books and day 6 was a day I was waiting for and I spent most of the money which i have saved, from not shopping for clothes and other common items, on this day. I was glad that I saved the money. We first went to Songshan Cultural & Creative Park( 松山文創園區) which was the first Eslite building I visited, it was called the Eslite Spectrum mall. So, it was more of a mall than a bookstore with individual art and lifestyle accessories, but they had the bookstore at the top level. I didn’t have a lot of time to browse through the whole park, as the mall took up a lot of my time, which i regret staying there for too long. I don’t recall what lunch I had that day which was regretful. After lunch, our tour bus dropped us at the famous Taipei 101. This was my second time at Taipei 101 and I still marvelled at the height of the building. As a group we walked to the Eslite Bookstore located at XinYi Branch and over there i bought quite a lot of books which i don’t regret buying till today. My lecturer then brought half the group to the Ri Xing Type Foundry and there I bought my chinese name characters as well as my katakana initials. We listened to an inspiring talk by the type foundry owner and when everyone was done purchasing their metal typefaces. I followed my lecturer to walk the streets of Taipei with a small group of my friends and we walked all the way from the foundry to the hotel.

On day 7, it was our free and easy day which we were supposed to plan with our taiwan buddies and have them bring us around. Prior to the trip, during online skype discussions with our taiwan buddies, we had to come up with a draft itinerary for our lecturer. My group chose to go to 3 locations recommended by our lecturer and we planned the route with Nana. However on day 6, we changed the itinerary slightly while discussing with Nana on the LINE app, so instead of 3 locations, we had planned 4/5 destinations to cover.

We decided to meet over at our first location, which was called The Old Village (四四南村), at 10. We came on time and started our little outing with Nana.(Abby was unable to make it as she was busy) At the location, we knew there was a very famous cafe called Good Cho, and had planned to eat there but as the cafe was already very crowded we decided not to. My group didn’t take very long at the location and we proceeded to the second destination, which was the Eslite bookstore branch at XinYi Road(the same bookstore we visited the day before) for some last minute book shopping. As we had already remembered the books that we wanted to get, we didn’t take very long at the bookstore and was out within 20 minutes. From there we were actually unsure whether to proceed to our third destination as we wanted Nana to recommend a good cafe for us to settle in and eat. I have forgotten where the cafe was located at but i remembered that the cafe was a Twinings Tea establishment-cumcafe and I really enjoyed the iced peach tea as well as my lunch set, which was a japanese tokatsu dish. Unfortunately, Nana was busy as well and had to go

right after our lunch together and from there we bid Nana farewell and were on our way to our third stop, Nostalgic future. Nostlagic Future is a small little shop, which was a little difficult to find, as a team, I admit we were quite frustrated and were almost close to giving up. Still we persisted and found our way through the unfamiliar roads and finally found ourselves as Nostalgic Future and the trouble was worth the find. The shop was such a wonderful place, with small little vintage gadgets that we were all so tempted to buy but decided not to spend on the delicate items. We talked to the owner of the shop, which was a petite lady in her mid 30s, and she was such a lovely person. She told us about the various classes being conducted at the shop, like leather making, wood carving classes and we were determined that the next time we were in Taiwan, we’ll definitely go for one of the classes. What we did after leaving Nostalgic future is of a blur to me now, but i remembered going into one art exhibition and after which there was a very funny incident with our umbrellas and hats, we battled the strong winds and rains while walking on this empty unsheltered road, the memory was quite comedic to me. We managed to find our way to our last stop, which was the Taipei Artist Village. The place was really beautiful and we could have taken tons of lovely pictures if it weren’t so late. By the time we reached there, the sun was already setting and most of the shops and studios there were already closed for the day. Though it was unfortunate for us to have come so late, but we managed to end the day by meeting 2 very kind taiwanese girls who we set and chatted over tea.

DAY 8 TO BE BACK ONE DAY

11. 1O. 2O14

LAST BREAKFAST AT GOSLEEP HOTEL/ LAST WALK AROUND XIMENDING/BOARDING THE BUS FOR TAOYUAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT/GOODBYE 一 百哥/BOARDING THE PLANE/BACK TO COUNTRY I CALL HOME

I think that the best day for me was definitely day 7 as it was the day i got to experience independent travelling, the day allowed me to experience what it’s like to find my own direction in a foreign country and to rely only on myself and my groupmates. I am really thankful for the day and the events that unfolded. Leaving Taiwan on day 8 was really sad for most of us, for me, I thought that there were still many more places I would like to visit and discover. Still, at the end of the day, as a group of design students, each and everyone of us made wonderful memories that would never be easily forgotten, even if the details of the memories fade, the feelings that came with it will definitely stay. At least during the plane ride back, I was able to sit with my teammate and good friend, Yi Qing, and ultimately we had a safe plane trip back to Singapore. The trip definitely revealed to me the cultural difference between Taiwan and Singapore, more so than my first trip to Taiwan, and other then the projects that I had to do, the trip was really educational and experiential.
