New York City in the 1600’s • The first people to live in NY were the Lenape Native Americans who were hunters in the Hudson and Delaware river. • The Dutch settled in NY in 1624 in Governor’s Island called (New Amsterdam) but it was taken over by the British and renamed New York City

New York City 1700’s-1900’s • 1720’s NYC was the hub of exports and transports as it had great ports and harbors. • Stamp Act of 1768 was created but NY had an anti-british mentality which influenced Revolutionary War 1768-1783 • 1776 USA received its independence from Britain but it wasn’t until 1778 that the Constitution was ratified • However, NYC served as a British military base until 1783


1800-1900’s in NYC • 1810- a time for construction of bridges • 1811- Commision Plan • 1840’s- immigrants from Germany, southern and eastern Europe migrated to the USA • 1865- 5 boroughs were merged together
