TOYOTA KALAHARI BOTSWANA 1000 DESERT RACE STEEPED IN HISTORY Roll of honour includes legendary names in South African motorsport The Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race – round three of the Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship from June 24 to 26 – is an event steeped in history. Legendary names in South African motorsport are to be found among the list of winners of a race run between 1975 and 1979 as the Total Trans Kalahari. In 1980 the event was backed by IGI, with Toyota sponsoring the race for the first time in 1981 and until 1990 was run in the Vryburg area. The decision to move the event to Botswana came in 1991, and the following year saw another change. Motorsport South Africa decided to split the off road championship which only made provision for an overall winner, into Special Vehicle and Production Vehicle categories with overall winners recognised in each category. From 1991 until the move to Kumakwane in 2010, the race started from high profile venues in the city of Gaborone. The route primarily ran in the north east region with an overnight stop at Mantshwabisi, before heading back to Gaborone for the finish. When the overnight halt at Mantshwabisi came to an end in 2004 the event moved to the west taking in the Kumakwane and Molopolole areas. Rapid growth and commercialisation of the greater CBD saw another change in 2010 and race headquarters and the start/finish moved to Kumakwane on the outskirts of Gaborone.

THE TOYOTA DESERT RACE HISTORY cont. In 2014, at the request of the Botswana Tourism Organisation which is keen to see communities benefit from the impact of the event, the race moved to Jwaneng, home of the world’s biggest diamond mine. On the competition front six wins spread over the past 24 years see veteran South African cross country and rally co-driver Richard Leeke lead the Toyota 1000 Desert Race roll of honour. Not far behind Leeke in terms of wins are former South African champions Apie Reyneke, who tragically died in a helicopter accident last year, and Hannes Grobler each with five victories. Robin Houghton’s four victories with Reyneke in a Toyota Land Cruisers leave him one ahead of other multiple winners Dennis Murphy (Toyota Hilux) and Rob Howie (Toyota Hilux) alongside Duncan Vos in 2012 and Leeroy Poulter in 2015. Drivers with multiple wins in the Production Vehicle category include Duncan Vos (4), Neil Woolridge (3), Anthony Taylor (3) and Kassie Coetzee (2). Woolridge won SA championships on two and four wheels, and his three Botswana wins all came in different vehicles – Nissan Sani, Mitsubishi Pajero and Ford Ranger. Among the special vehicle competitors the father and son combination of Franz Czepek senior and Franz junior top the victory list with four wins. The pair won three times in a row between 1997 and 1999 and again in 2001. Buks Carolin, Shameer Variawa and Siegfried Rousseau, now chief executive officer of SANORA, are next on the list with Carolin winning with his brother Richard in 1995, followed up by back to back wins with Atang Makgekgenene in 2004 and 2005. 2008 to 2010 belonged to Variawa and Rousseau in a Porter. Apart from the Czepeks other father and son winners include Nick and Ryan Harper in 2006, Kallie and Quintin Sullwald in 2007 and 2011 and Herman and Wichard Sullwald in 2013. Wichard then became the first competitor to win as both driver and co-driver when he and father Herman won the second heat of the race in 2014. After the win by Reyneke/Houghton in 1999 the event was dominated by Nissan teams, under team manager Glyn Hall, who won eight times in a row between 2002 and 2009. Toyota had to wait longer than a decade for their next win when Vos and Howie broke the drought in 2012 with Hall now at the helm of the Castrol Toyota Hilux factory team. Since then the balance of power has shifted back to Toyota who went through last season unbeaten in the Donaldson Cross Country Championship. Taylor and Murphy won in 2013 and 2014, and last year shared wins with Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie in the two heats. Down the years the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race, the only marathon event on the Donaldson calendar, has produced triumph and heartbreak with high drama always around the next corner. The race invariably produces a sting in the tail and this year is unlikely to be any different.

BOTSWANA TOURISM CEO’S STATEMENT FOR THE TOYOTA 1000 DESERT RACE SPECTATOR
This year marks the 35th year of the Toyota 1000 Desert Race and promises to be the biggest one yet. The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO), South Africa Off Road Racing Association (SANORA) and Botswana Motor Sport (BMS) teams have worked around the clock to ensure its success and to ensure that participants and spectators have a safe and fun filled event. The route as usual has changes to ensure that the race stays competitive every year and to give the environment a chance to recover. The Saturday loop will see the participants passing through Mokhomba, Lefoko, Mookane and Khua pan. On Sunday, racing will pass Mokhomba, Mookane and Sese to end the spectacular race back in Jwaneng. The motorbike race will be the opposite routes with motor vehicles on each day, Saturday and Sunday. We would like to urge all spectators to be extremely vigilant and careful when watching the race. The vehicles and bikes move at exceptional speeds; please stay off the race route and obey instructions by the Botswana Police Service and BMS marshals. Refrain from drinking and driving to keep yourself and fellow spectators safe. Remember that we equally need to be conscious of the environment. We have provided waste receptacles across Jwaneng and alongside the route in designated spectator points and encourage you to utilize them at all times. Finally, this event would not be possible without regional and local collaboration with our stakeholders. We would like to thank Botswana Government , SANORA, BMS, Jwaneng Town Council and Debswana Jwaneng mine, to name but a few, for their tremendous support. Let us all enjoy the event and ensure to take care of visitors who will be here to join us and enjoy with us as we count down to Botswana’s 50 of independence. Let us all go to Jwaneng and support our teams and please, ‘Do not Spoil It!’ Pula!

TOYOTA SOUTH AFRICA IS PROUD TO BE A PART OF THE SPECTACULAR TOYOTA 1000 DESERT RACE DESERT RACE
Welcome to one of the most iconic motor races in Africa, the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race. It is, without a doubt, one of the premiere events on the African continent, and the crown jewel of the Donaldson Cross Country Championship. As in the past, Toyota will be well represented in this year’s race, with two factory-prepared Toyota Gazoo Racing SA vehicles racing in Class FIA. They are supported by a cast of privateer teams, who have also chosen the highly reliable Toyota Hilux as their weapon of choice. As a matter of fact, Toyota tops the standings in two of the three production vehicle classes going into the Desert Race. Leeroy Poulter currently leads in Class FIA, while Heinie Strumpher is at the top of the leaderboard in Class S. Jason Venter has been flying the Toyota flag in Class T, behind the wheel of the 4x4 Mega World Toyota Hilux, and he is currently in second place in the standings. Over the years, Toyota has performed extremely well in Botswana. In the early days of cross country racing it was the Land Cruiser bakkies that set the pace, with the likes of the late Apie Reyneke chalking up five victories since the race first moved to Botswana in 1991. In more recent years, Duncan Vos stamped his name on the event with four wins, while current Toyota Gazoo Racing SA driver Anthony Taylor boasts three wins so far. With that said, no victory on the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race comes easy, and with a number of very fast crews competing in Fords, Nissans and VW Amaroks, the 2016 race promises to be every bit as spectacular as last year’s race. Speaking of last year, the 2015 edition turned into a tight battle between the two Toyota Gazoo Racing SA crews, with Leeroy Poulter/Rob Howie winning the qualifying race as well as Day 1. But then Anthony Taylor/Dennis Murphy triumphed on Day 2, giving them the overall victory. This year has seen the addition of Class FIA, which caters specifically for production vehicles that conform to the FIA’s specifications – essentially vehicles that are in identical trim to the machines that compete on the Dakar Rally. This means that fans are in for a treat on this year’s Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race, as a number of Class FIA vehicles will be taking part, giving them a taste of the Dakar, right here in Botswana. Whatever happens in the race, Toyota South Africa is proud to be a part of the spectacular Desert Race, and to link our name to this iconic event. We wish all competitors in the race the best of luck, and sincerely thank the government and people of Botswana for their constant support.

ABOUT JWANENG
Fittingly named, the little town is home to the Jwaneng Diamond Mine – the richest diamond mine, by value, in the world and situated in south-central Botswana, on the fringes of the Kgalagadi, approximately 120 kilometres west of Gaborone. Jwaneng means ‘a place of small stones.’ Owned and operated by Debswana, a partnership between the diamond mining magnate DeBeers and the Botswana Government, Jwaneng Mine has been in operation since 1982, and has consistently contributed a large share of Botswana’s total ore output. The town with its main thoroughfare the A2 Trans Kalahari motorway is a hive of activity and tourists can stop over and enjoy the bustling atmosphere and make use of its facilities, such as petrol stations, restaurants, hotels or guest houses. The mine has also established and supports the nearby Jwana Game Park, which is home to a number of indigenous wildlife species, excluding the large predators. There is, however, a Cheetah Conservation field unit in the park and in 2007 two white rhinos were introduced into the park from the Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

WHAT IS BOTSWANA MOTOR SPORT (BMS) ? The concept of Botswana Motor Sport (BMS) was the brainchild of the late Mr Rashid Noble, who felt that an umbrella body was needed in Botswana to control motor sport in the country. Initially the Association was affiliated to Motorsport South Africa (MSA), falling under the North West Region. All riders had to take out South African racing licences and follow the MSA Rules and Regulations. After a few years of inactivity, BMS was reconstituted under the leadership of Mr John Carr-Hartley, followed by Dr Pearl Lebatha, when BMS was accepted as an affiliate to the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC). After a Government mandate was issued to BMS to form its own Federation, Mr Kevin Branch spearheaded this initiative and BMS joined the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in 2012 and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) in 2013. Botswana riders could finally proudly fly their own flag at international events! BMS currently has 11 affiliate motorsport clubs countrywide, with 20 licenced car racing drivers (including spinning and karting) and 117 licenced motorcycle racing riders (including offroad bike, quad and motocross riders). The interest in competing in motorsport among Batswana has dramatically increased in the past 9 years, with a current percentage of 34% Expatriate and 66% Batswana competitors. There are a number of Batswana riders and drivers who have competed very successfully in International events. This year’s Toyota Desert 1000 Race marks the 2nd and 3rd Rounds of the 2016 BMS National Offroad Championship, with riders scoring points on both days and bonus points for completing the marathon event of 1000km. Round 1 of the Championship was held in Sese on 21 May (no part of the TDR route was included in the race) and was jointly organised by Gaborone Motor Club and Jwaneng Dust Devils Club. The current leaders in the BMS National Offroad Championship are as follows: BIKES 188 Robert Tshiamo Pollock 26 Douglas Morris 33 John Kelly 96 Allan Ryan QUADS 411 Jabulani Thomas Johnson 44 Ahmed Deen Noble CL94 Alexio Mazadza LB1 Maikaelelo Kenosi BMS bike and quad competitors in the TDR will be marked with a P in front of their numbers. Please raise a cheer for our local riders as they pass you! The current President of BMS, Mr Modisaemang, has the following message: “I will start up by saying ‘Our Country, Our Pride,Botswana, Our Race, TDR 1000 Botswana’. TDR 1000 is back again with SANORA bring back the MSA National Championship for Bikes and Quads in collaboration with Botswana Motorsport. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders and sponsors who made possible for us to be where we are as Botswana Motorsport. Our sincere appreciation goes to BTO and SANORA for their support throughout the years to be the pillars of TDR 1000 until to date. To our valuable spectators, we appreciate your presence and support that you continue to give over the years, to cheer up our competitors. Please do come once again to give support to your favourite competitor. However safety begins with you, drive safely, observe road signs and markings, respect for other motorist , be patient and do not speed, speed kills. Kindly give yourself a moment of silent to remember those lovely ones that we lost in our roads. God bless Batswana.”

W
elcome To a new Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship season. It promises to be an exciting year with a number of new developments adding a little spice to the championship. Chief among the new developments is that the Donaldson Cross Country Championship and the SA National Cross Country Motorcycle and Quad Championships will be run under the auspices of SANORA. Running the championships side by side enhances our show for sponsors and spectators, makes good commercial sense for all the stakeholders, and is a positive step forward. This year’s Donaldson Cross Country Championship will be made up of seven events – two endurance races, one marathon, three sprint races and a super sprint event. The one day super sprint race is a new innovation and, apart from providing for an affordable event, adds to the championship menu of varied race distances, terrain and challenges.

CROSS COUNTRY MOTORCYCLE AND QUAD CHAMPIONSHIP
COMMITED TO THE FUTURE SANORA the administrators of the Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship have entered into a partnership with Motorsport South Africa (MSA) to organise and manage the South African National Off-Road Motorcycle and Quad Championship in an exciting innovative manner which once again brings the two Championships together. This partnership will see both championships share common race venues at three of the five rounds during the 2016 season and kicks off with the opening round in Vryburg on 1 and 2 April 2016. SANORA’s research revealed by running the two championships side by side provided an enhanced show with greater sponsor and spectator appeal and strengthened the economic impact on communities where events take place. Two separate national championships running concurrently, sharing organisational costs and resources, is also good commercial logic for all the stakeholders and competitors. SANORA recognise the adventurous nature of competitors in our sport and will go that extra mile to create exciting events where everyone can have fun in a safe and fair environment. To further align the two championships and in keeping with international standards the championship will in future be known as the South African National Cross Country Motorcycle and Quad Championship. ROUTE DESCRIPTION A TYPICAL ENDURANCE ROUTE FOR TOYOTA KALAHARI BOTSWANA 1000 DESERT RACE A feast of motorsport for cross country racing enthusiasts Anyone harbouring expectations that the route for the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race will differ materially from years gone by is not paying attention. The route for this year’s race from June 24 to 26 is typically Kalahari. That means plenty of sand, more sand and rocky outcrops although there is good grass cover after late summer rains. The weekend’s programme features a feast of national championship racing with round three of the Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship, and rounds three and four of the South African Cross Country Motorcycle and Quad Racing Championships racing under the SANORA banner. The event also features rounds two and three of the Botswana National Off Road Championship and it is the first time since 2013 that the two South African national series have competed together in Botswana. “It is great to have the cars, motorcycles and the quads under one roof again,” said SANORA chief executive officer Siegfried Rousseau. “The weekend is regarded as the premier sporting and social event in Botswana, and is the blue chip event on the Donaldson Cross Country Championship calendar. “The weekend promises to provide for some spectacular racing and once again we have had unbelievable support from the Botswana Tourism Organisation, the Botswana Police Service, various Land Boards, the Jwaneng District Commissioner, the Jwaneng Town Council and Debswana who own the Jwaneng diamond mine.” Rousseau also paid tribute to the healthy working relationship forged with Botswana Motorsport over the past two years. The positive cooperation and keen desire to grow the federation and the sport in Botswana was encouraging. The opportunity offered by SANORA, to be part of this epic event, has provided a hands-on approach that sees the Botswana federation actively involved in route reconnaissance, compiling the road book, route marking and the provision of event marshals and officials. The 120 kilometre qualifying race for cars on Friday, June 24 starting at 10:30 from the Jwaneng Sports Club will see competitors follow a route that takes them south to Mokhomma and back to the finish at Jwaneng. The motorcycles and quads will complete a 50 kilometres time trial utilising a different route from the cars and are scheduled to start at 13:30. The cars, motorcycles and quads will each do a ‘south’ loop and an ‘east’ loop in the race. The cars will complete the ‘south’ loop on Saturday, June 25 and the ‘east’ loop on Sunday, June 26 and vice versa for the motorcycles and quads.
