Kenya at risk of first Ebola case in 30 days Fears that the deadly Ebola outbreak may have spread to Kenya became ever more grave on Thursday after the World Bank said the country may experience its first case in 30 days if the epidemic is not halted. In its Ebola Impact Index, the World Bank listed Kenya among 19 countries with high chances of reporting the first cases should the three worst affected countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea fail to stop the virus. The fresh warning came even as the World Health Organization (WHO) said the virus is entrenched in capital cities of all three West African countries. It is accelerating in almost all settings. P2

Kenya risks reporting first Ebola case From Page 1 Four continents have ramped up responses after the first patient diagnosed with the hemorrhage fever in US died. In Spain, doctors in Madrid are keenly monitoring the developments of an assistant nurse who was diagnosed with the virus early this week. Meanwhile, a 57-year-old woman who returned to Australia after treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone has been isolated at a

hospital and is undergoing tests, including one for the deadly virus. WHO deputy head Bruce Aylward warned that the world’s response was not keeping up with the disease in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The outbreak has so far killed more than 3,860 people with more than 200 medical staff among the victims. The situation could spell more doom for Kenya after World Bank research estimated that up to eight

cases could be reported in the next 30 days should interventions to control the virus fail. Kenya is among countries which have not implemented proper measures to deal with the virus. Kenyan doctors through the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers on Wednesday warned that the country is not ready to deal with an Ebola outbreak. They said less than one per cent of health staff have necessary

training to handle the disease. “The international community must act on the knowledge that weak public health infrastructure, institutions and systems in many fragile countries are a threat to their citizens, trading partners and the world at large,” World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said. Kenya has only one treatment centre at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) in Nairobi. But threats on the country

have been raised by the fact that Nairobi serves as the main gateway to the Comesa and East African trading blocs. Many airlines, including national carrier Kenya Airways, have suspended operations in worst-hit countries to halt possible spread. The US has intensified screening of all passengers at major airports and UK, France, Germany and Kenya are in the list of risk countries.

out please: A medical team escorts an unidentified man out of a plane after he claimed he had the Ebola virus. INSET: I ain’t from Africa:The man is escorted out of the jet.

A 54-year-old black American passenger on a US Airways flight from Philadelphia to the Dominican Republic caused panic when he reportedly said: “I have Ebola! You are all screwed!” While it was meant to be a joke, authorities did not take his claims lightly and quarantined the plane, keeping passengers locked inside for up to two hours. And after landing, a medical team wearing hazmat suits came onboard to remove the man from the plane. Another passenger captured the entire drama on video. Passengers said the man sneezed and then claimed he had just returned from Africa. Flight attendants immediately reported it. “We are following the direction of, and strictly adhering to, all Centres for Disease Control and

Prevention guidelines in place for airlines in response to the Ebola virus,” a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement. As a medical team escorted the man out of the plane, he protested saying: “I was just kidding...I ain’t from Africa.” “I think the man that has said this is an idiot, and I’ll say that straight out, and if you hear me that’s fine,” said a flight attendant who was also on the plane. Passengers seemed to react with astonishment, anger and fear, with one passenger saying: “You can’t make this stuff up.” Investigations by medical teams revealed that the man was not sick with the virus and had not been around anyone infected with Ebola. Following the incident, authorities have said the man will be sent back to US.

Kaimenyi orders varsities to scrap certificate courses Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has ordered universities to scrap certificate and diploma courses and concentrate on degrees and research to ensure quality of higher education. Prof Kaimenyi said it is wrong for universities to offer diplomas and certificates which are reserved for middle-level colleges. “This country has many middle-level colleges offering all manner of certificate courses and diplomas, and that’s how it should be. But universities main responsibility is to provide

education at a higher level… that’s why it’s called higher education,” Kaimenyi said. Kaimenyi said universities are eating into the territory of middle level colleges for commercial gains. This, he said, reduces their efficiency and compromises on the quality of higher education. “The moment universities start offering the courses, they spread themselves so thin to an extent where they do not have sufficient time to perform their core mandate. If indeed and I suspect it’s the case and I’ve heard this

complaint, people are offering certificate courses with the core aim of increasing their revenue base,” he said. Kaimenyi called on higher education institutions to involve professional bodies that review and develop curricula for job market skills. He said shunning the input of the bodies put students at risk of not being recognised. “Review faculty members must invite professional bodies’ representatives. They will give their expectations, and that of the

job market,” Kaimenyi said. The minister also asked universities to strengthen career guidance to help students make professional choices for development. “There is nothing like useless courses. All degrees are important and they complement each other,” the official said. He said plans are underway to release University Fund, which will fund incubation centres for research and nurture innovative ideas.

East Africans to enjoy cheap phone calls

Majority of married Kenyan couples unhappy with union Only 40 per cent of married Kenyans are happily married while close to a third of all married Kenyans believe that their union is about to end. In a study done by research group, Infotrack, it was revealed that 6 out of every 10 Kenyans are only with their spouse “for the sake of the children” while 1 out of 10 per cent are in it for love. The study incited a number of shocking responses with one individual noting that: “Love comes last in marriage.” Given a second chance, 30 per cent of married people would not wed their current spouse again. Most divorced or separated men said nagging spouses brought an end to their marriages while many noted that they walked out because their wives had become quarrelsome and “disrespectful”. Most divorced women, on the other hand, walked out of their marriages because the men did not demonstrate enough commitment to the relationship. Half of the divorced or separated women say they ended their marriages because their spouses were not treating them as “equal” partners in the union. Six out of every 10 married Kenyans say the only bond keeping their marriage together are the children.

East Africans will soon enjoy cheaper cross boarder calls after telecom operators agreed to cut the roaming charges. The charges will go down by at least 60 percent in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said roaming would also not be charged for receiving calls.

Ebola race issue real in the US

XNews exclusively sought the opinions of Kenyans abroad on their ebola experience…

By Henry Pasha, Karisan media, Dallas, Texas.

I

t was just yesterday we found out that Eric Duncan, the first Ebola case in the United States had died. As we all know he is from Liberia, and had traveled back to Dallas, to see his Fiancée and son. Questions have been raised about how his treatment had been handled, including his nationality. Considering the two previously ill White Americans were treated with the experimental drug Z-Mapp within a matter of hours at Texas Presbyterian hospital, Duncan was not administered experimental medication until the full onset of his symptoms. And even then, the medication he was given was different from the other two patients.

As a Kenyan living in American, over the years I’ve experienced racism as a black man. It is only when I speak and the people around me realize that I have an accent, it becomes clear that I am not African American but African. Their attitude towards me changes for the better. All that has now changed. Having Duncan’s nationality blasted across breaking news networks and online blogs, I am finding that I am now being discriminated against because I am African—from Africa! My next door neighbour, who is African American, recently blatantly accused me and my fellow Africans of coming to American to get free education and bringing diseases that affect “real Americans”. That really took me a back, I shared the story with my Facebook friends, only to find that a lot of us are going through the same thing. Patricia another Kenyan said, she sneezed at work and all her co-workers stopped to look at her, Karanja who was

showing flu like symptoms and was promptly sent home from work. These stories are everywhere. The ignorance level of the media and the people not taking the time to read the facts as to how Ebola is spread, and the geographical composition of Africa, are all factors contributing to this new level of discrimination. Many are assuming that all Africans can be carriers of Ebola, and this is very frustrating. People are walking around with hand sanitizer like never before. Africans are now in fear of getting ill, and going to hospital. Anything ranging from allergies, flu like symptoms, coughing or even food poisoning, showing up at an emergency room with an African accent with any of these ailments could lead one to be quarantined. All we can do going forward is to get together as a community, remain hopeful, and try to educate everyone around us. It is difficult, however it’s the only way we’ll be able to get through the stigma.

State launches Sh10b City’s 24-hour economy project

The Government has launched a Sh10 billion initiative to promote a 24hour economy in Nairobi by repairing street lights. The National Treasury has released Sh381.2 million to Kenya Power to launch the exercise. “We are mapping out areas where there are street lights on Kenya Power infrastructure in conjunction with the County government officials for the initial rehabilitation as work

continues to identify other street lighting that requires attention,” Kenya Power Chief Executive Ben Chumo said. Nairobi has about 24,000 street lights and 7,300 public lighting masts that cover about 30 per cent of the metropolis. About 40 per cent of the facilities are not operational. It is estimated that the refurbishment would cost about Sh953 million. The Government’s goal is to facilitate provision of

sustainable, efficient and effective public lighting in all counties, with Nairobi being the first target. The project’s priority areas include Baba Dogo, Kariobangi Light Industries and Industrial Area. Jua kali sector areas such as Kamukunji, Gikomba have also been identified. Other areas set to benefit from the programme include the Central Business District, Westlands, Buru Buru, Kahawa West and Embakasi.

ohn Ruganda, in the book the Burdens, wonders when Africa will run its own show. While the title of the book aptly applies to what Africa has to carry; burdens- sometimes borne not through her creation, it is the high time African leaders started charting a new vision for Africa, a vision that make the continent self-reliant and capable of managing its own affairs without having to put Africans to shame or feeling embarrassed about being African Arguably, there has been no difficult moment to be African than has been the case in last couple of weeks. An insidious disease, Ebola has struck West Africa with such venom that innocent women, men and children are succumbing to its poison, dying a painful death, unable to get the care and treatment. There is no cure for Ebola, at least for

Africans, yet there are those who are getting treated by experimental drugs. Your guess is as good as mine, who these people are. Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian who had travelled to America to join his fiancée, hoping to get married soon did not know that he had contracted the disease from a pregnant woman back in Liberia. Innocent as his published photos look, I can picture Duncan, as the plane touched down at Dallas Fortworth Airport, humming the words “Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountains’ majesty across the fruited plain.” Of course Duncan may not have known the depth of these words, for he was born in Liberia. He may not have seen many purple mountains. He may not have seen many fruited plains; but in those words, Duncan may have believed in America. But in Death, he is a dejected man. That country did not do enough to treat him. Thomas Eric Duncan’s death leaves a sour taste. It makes it possible, especially for Africans to make conclusions to the effect that no one really gives a hoot about Africans. This comes only a month or so after two Americans were

airlifted from West Africa to Atlanta-Georgia, where they received first class treatment, and healed. Almost at the same time Duncan was being admitted to hospital after first having been misdiagnosed, NBC TV cameraman Ashoka Mukpo, contracted Ebola in West Africa, and was flown to the Nebraska Medical Centerone of four high-level biocontainment facilities in the USA. It is in the same facility where Fifty-one-year-old Dr. Rick Sacra was successfully treated there last month. Pray tell me, could Duncan not have been treated at any of the top four facilities? Could his being Africa have contributed to his death? But the worst news is yet to come. In America, Duncan’s death has become a rallying cry for some conservatives who would like tougher immigration laws. Texas Governor Rick Perry has called for the federal government to step up its screening of travelers coming from West Africa, suggesting the use of temperature monitors at airports and creating quarantine centers at ports of entry in the U.S. While prevention is better than cure, all these measures are also a euphemism for “We do not like Africans in our country.”

TSC plans talks over teachers’ strike threat By Stella Kimani Efforts to avert a looming teachers strike heightened on Friday after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) asked the Kenya National Union of Teachers for talks next week where new offers are expected to be tabled. The teachers have threatened to disrupt the national

examinations set to start on October 21 by calling a strike if TSC fails to heed to demands for improved allowances. The key demands include revision of housing, commuter and responsibility allowances and improvement of teachers’ job grades. If implemented, the improvement will rank head teachers and

principals below Permanent Secretaries. Kuppet is demanding a 200 per cent salary rise and a 50 per cent house allowance hike, citing high inflation as basis of the demands. Talks over the issues collapsed early this week after TSC allegedly withdrew an offer they had earlier tabled.

Is Kenya prepared to deal with Ebola?

Risper Cheruto, Security Officer

The government isn’t prepared to deal with the virus. If the doctors say that they are not prepared to deal with it and yet we depend on them, then as a country we are not prepared.

Joel Osimba, 60, Farmer

The government and the medical staff are prepared to deal with the virus. All those years that we have heard of Ebola in the neighbouring countries yet it hasn’t come into our country.

George Owino Olendo, 37, Jobless

The government is prepared to deal with the deadly virus but they need to create public awareness. The citizens need to be included in the fight to ensure it doesn’t get into the country.

Grace Mwai, 45, Businesswoman

If you see how other countries have suffered due to the disease and we have not, you can say we are prepared. But we need more screening on our borders to ensure it stays away completely.

Ngugi misses the Nobel yet again Renowned Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong’o yesterday missed out on the Nobel Prize for Literature in what erodes Africa’s diminishing hope of ever scooping the award again. Prof Ngugi was the bookmakers’ favourite to win the prestigious award this year, but lost to French author Patrick Modiano, whose work the committee described as “the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation” in his works. This is the second time Ngugi missed out on the award after he was also tipped to win it in 2010. Swedish newspapers

reported that betting firms had unanimously agreed that Ngugi was the favourite for this year’s award ahead of the announcement made in Stockholm yesterday. Only six Africans have won the Nobel Prize for Literature before, with Nigerian legendary writer Wole Soyinka being the first black to bag the award in 1986.

The assurance comes as traders attend this year’s Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) which has attracted more than 170 buyers from more than 36 countries. Speaking at the welcome dinner, Kenya Tourism Board Managing Director Muriithi Ndegwa said the sector has taken measures to attract more visitors.

He said the Government had enhanced security for visitors. “We want to assure you and your clients that Kenya is safe and open for business. KTB continues to promote Magical Kenya’s diverse tourism product offering as a multi-centre destination,” said Ndegwa. This event attracted 101 exhibitors with new entrants like Djibouti, Sudan and Indonesia. Experts gave talks on the country’s tourism industry during the

seminar sessions. Breaking travel news has reported that this year’s theme was “Learning, Solutions, Sharing Experiences and Collaboration.” MKTE seeks to position Kenya as an African destination leader on the global tourism map. Apple to launch new Mac iPad on October 16 Barely a month after Apple’s big launch of the iPhone 6 and iwatch, they are set to unveil new iPads and Mac computers on October 16. The new iPad will have the Touch ID fingerprint reader currently available on iPhone 6. It will be thinner with upgraded A8 processor and may also come in gold for the first time with a high definition retina 12.9-inch screen. On the other hand, MacBook will come in a new design and are expected to be faster and have higher configuration. This includes a 12-inch high-defi-

nition Retina Display. The Mac Mini and Apple TV Box will be updated after being passed over in recent hardware upgrades. The introduction of the lightweight Air last year saw Apple go through a difficult year. They suffered drop in sales since January after an increase of about 13 per cent in unit sales in the December quarter. The launch of Apple’s latest OS X Yosemite operating system is also expected to take place at the event. It is said to be a much improved operating system when it comes to the user experience.

Microsoft boss draws fire over women remark Microsoft Corp’s Chief Executive Satya Nadella has sparked outrage after he suggested on Thursday that women in technology should not ask for raises but have faith in the “system”. The summit was convened to celebrate women in computing, Reuters reports. “It’s not really about asking

She said his views were “one of the very few things that I

disagree with you on.” This provoked cheers from the audience. Many Microsoft customers took to Twitter, the popular social media site, for selfexpression. “Our industry must close gender pay gap so a raise is not needed because of a bias,” he tweeted several hours after his remarks as he tried to patch up the damage. “I believe men and women should get equal pay for equal work,” he said in a

memo. A recent research by US Association of University Women states that last year, women were paid only 78 per cent of what equally qualified men received. Some data suggests that the pay gap is less in the tech sector. Only 29 per cent of Microsoft’s more than 100,000 employees are female, data recently released by the company shows.

They account for just under half of the world’s population and home to one-third of people living on less than $2 (about Sh180) a day. Mercy Kamau, John Olwande and James Githuku of Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy Development carried out the ‘Consumption and Expenditures on Key Food Commodities in Urban Households’ study. Using the city of Nairobi as the focus point, they discovered that the average monthly expenditure for households is Sh14,000 for the lowest income earners. The second group spends 19,117 a month, the third Sh25,231, fourth 40,712 while the fifth spends Sh140,828. Kamau and colleagues note that the gap in expenses is a sign that people’s lifestyles change as income rises. It is also a sign that Kenya’s new middle income earners will likely adopt more extravagant regimes as salaries increase.

The Bank alerted SA authorities of the transaction and Nigerian officials insisted that it was needed to buy arms including 50 cannons and 200,000 rounds of ammunition. The move followed the seizure of $9.3 million (Sh829 million) in cash last month from a private jet carrying two Nigerians and an Israeli. Nigeria, known as the “Giant of Africa”, due to its large population and economy, has since urged SA authorities to release the funds.

41 pc staff find jobs with help of friends, kin

Close to half of all employed individuals got their jobs with the help of a friend, family member or college. A new survey from Right Management, an branch of staffing giant, Manpower Group along with a number of local statistics and global data on job recruitment all agree that as many as 41 per cent of all current workers needed someone to help them get through the door when they were looking for employment. Florence Mukunya from recruitment firm, Career Point Kenya says that one should “never burn bridges” that link them to friends, colleagues and recruiters who may help them find jobs in the near future. Beth Wanjira from local recruitment company, Corporate Staffing Services, agrees. Right Management’s research also agrees and shows that only 8 per cent of workers said they found a new position through a direct approach, which requires them to walk into an interview with no one to back them. Colleagues from college and people met during an internship have been cited as the ones who are likely to help someone find a job.

Dried foods farmers double income Growing demand for dried foods, especially in local and export markets, is helping smallholder farmers double income. A USAid report states that an acre of well managed chilli can yield 1,000 to 3,000 kilogrammes, which gives a farmer up to Sh348,000 per acre. In Murang’a, small holder farmers are using solar dryers to create a new, booming market.

With the help of private food marketing company, Azuri Health Ltd, farmers are drying fruits and vegetables to make high-value products, These include thinly sliced fruits, such as mangoes, which are packaged and sold as snacks that are increasingly popular among urban shoppers. Vegetables such as beans are pre-cooked and the dried product turned into a meal in a few minutes

to make ready products that are ideal for busy families with little time for cooking. The tool that makes this possible is known as a dehydrator and costs about Sh28,000 from local suppliers such as Vibrant Health Organisation. Demand for dried vegetables and chillies has grown in the past two years, says John Sitienei, Factory Manager of Mace Foods in Eldoret.

The firm sources for vegetables and chillies for drying from 2,500 farmers. Mace trains farmers in farm and finance management and and is working to draw in more farmers. Across Nyanza and Western regions, the most common chilli varieties are African Birds Eye and Long Cayenne. Mace pays farmers Sh116 per kg for ABE chilli and Sh60 per kg for Long Cayenne.

Traditional makeup tricks you could use to make heads turn Makeup has been used by women for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians rocked eyeliner, 18th century French women made sure that their blush was on point and if Instagram was around 5,000 years ago it would have been full of photos

of ancient Chinese women wearing silver and gold nail polish. However women in ancient time paid a pretty high price for all things makeup and beauty. Here are a few beauty practices from back in the day that will fascinate you.

Eye makeup

Wigs stayed in fashion for some time and by the 18th century it was the bigger (and more elaborate) the better.

when it comes to lead or heavy metal poisoning for the sake of beauty, it’s hard to beat the Egyptians. Both men and women wore Kohl and copper ore to color their eyes. It was believed to not only make the eyes look bigger, but also double as protection against the Evil Eye.

Red lips

If you wanted a luscious red pout back before Mac products were on shelves,

you had a couple of options. You could act like an Egyptian, Cleopatra for that matter, and crush up some ants, add in some beetle blood and beeswax and be set for a hot night out.

Wig maintenance

Wigs stayed in fashion for some time and by the 18th century it was the bigger (and more elaborate) the better. The royal courts were notorious for having the most ornate and

sculpted wigs (think Marie Antoinette) and to sculpt these upper class, milehigh wigs they used lard to hold the hair sculptures firmly in place. Terrifyingly, the lard attracted lice and other vermin. Sometimes a cage was even set over the woman’s head at night to keep the rats at bay.

Red hair at any cost

During the reign of the great Queen Elizabeth, women of England were determined

Striking blue eye shadow is a beauty trend that will never go out of style simply because it is vivacious when worn right. It is quite an intimidating colour and that is why many women shy away from wearing it, instead going for neutral shades like brown. The key to wearing bold makeup is blending (applying a neutral coloured eye shadow first then the blue one). Blue eye shadow has a bright hue, and blending it helps tone down the brightness to create a more natural look that is soft and fresh. Always apply an eyelid primer before applying it. Blue eye shadow can take on a different hue, may turn to purple, when applied to bare skin, applying primer prevents this from happening and even makes it last longer. Do not over apply it, keep it contained to the eyelid to avoid looking like a clown. Darker shades tend to make the eyes recede so be sure not to apply the eye shadow above the eye lid. Downplay the cheeks and lips to let the blue eye shadow stand out. Stick to neutral blushes and nude lipsticks or glosses for a look that is not overdone. To make the eyes standout

even more, line the upper eye lashwith a black eye-liner. Keep it simple and neat for a sophisticated look. Avoid any cat-eye liner as pairing it with a blue shadow can make you look old fashioned.

The golden rule when wearing blue eye shadow is do not match it to your clothes. It will seem like you are trying too hard to pull off the look.

Do not over apply it, keep it contained to the eyelid to avoid looking like a clown.

Men’s vests

to mimic the Queen’s royal red hair color and stopped at nothing to achieve it. Of course they didn’t possesses the hair dying technology of today as they resorted to concoctions of lead, quicklime, sulfur and water to dye their hair and wigs. This particular blend commonly caused nausea, headaches and regular nosebleeds. That’s a high price to pay for some ginger hair!

Vests or undershirts are not a mustwear but does not hurt to keep a couple in your wardrobe. However, if you sweat a lot then a vest is something you should invest in. Sogginess is less obvious, when you have a vest underneath you shirt, which also keeps your shirt from staining. Vests also retain body heat in chilly times. Other men wear vests to cover their chest hair and keep it from penetrating through the shirt. “Men with densely hairy chests should wear vests to confine them because they are not attractive

sight,” said Molly Kimetto. Whatever your reason is, make sure your vest or undershirt is fitting and has small armholes. This makes them comfortable and allows free movement. Vests are meant to be invisible so they should remain unseen. They should be tucked in and the shirt buttoned to the top or high necked enough to conceal them. At no point should vests be seen unless if the shirt worn is very transparent. Mr Price and Woolworths have quality vests at affordable prices. Grab yourself some in case of anything.

FRIday, OCtoBER 10, 2014

HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19

You may be wondering whose shoulder you should cry on, Capricorn. Usually yours is the shoulder that everyone else likes to use. The collar of your shirt is probably soaking wet by now, thanks to all the tears that have spilled on you.

aquarius Jan 20 - Feb

Your coals have been smoldering for a while, and there is a great deal of smoke pouring from your blackened embers, Aquarius. The good news is that there’s apt to be a great gust of wind today, acting as the catalyst that ignites the flames.

pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20

Be wary of big promises today, Pisces. This could be one of those days when people are more likely to take a gamble because they’re unrealistic about how things are going to work out. Don’t be surprised if the stock market jumps as a result of the dollar signs that people imagine.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19

Feel free to go shopping for yourself, Aries. While you’re at it, you might as well pick up some things for others, too. You’re apt to be in tune with the pleasant spirit of the people around you. On the other hand, if they’re being especially negative or cranky, don’t hesitate to just go elsewhere.

taurus Apr 20 - May 20

You’re likely to gravitate toward those who can put on a show and carry your imagination to a far-off land today, Taurus. Look for this quality in others instead of turning to the TV to satisfy this need. If you aren’t careful, you may end up a couch potato all day, without talking to anyone.

gemini May 21 - Jun 21

Connect with those who carry you upward and encourage your fantasies today instead of those who try to bring you down to reality, Gemini. There’s a need for you to shine more brightly than usual, and there’s no reason why this wish shouldn’t be granted. Everything will work out splendidly for you as long as you align yourself with admirable people and noble causes, so go for it.

cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22

You’re likely now on the brink of completing a major move of some sort. Your first reaction may be to sit in solitary deliberation as you wrestle with the pros and cons of each piece of the situation. Try not to overload your head with too many details. Look at the overall picture.

leo Jul 23 - Aug 22

Don’t take things that don’t belong to you, Virgo. Your penetrating eyes are apt to spot things that are easily pocketed, even though you know deep down that those things aren’t meant for you to keep. Your imagination might try to convince you that it’s OK to pull such sneaky maneuvers, and you may be tempted. Don’t deceive yourself.

virgo Aug 23 -Sep 22

Virgo, love of all kinds - the love of friends, the affection of family members, romantic love - flourishes in the home today as a number of visitors come to your door, perhaps unexpectedly. One of your guests could bring some wonderful news about money.

libra Sep 23 - Oct 22

Try not to think too much about what is “supposed” to happen next, Libra. The truth of the matter is that things don’t necessarily work out the way they’re planned, so don’t count on something that has no guarantee of coming to fruition. Stick to your own way of doing things and try not to get too hung up on the results.

If you don’t have any plants, take this opportunity to go to the nursery and pick up a couple for your home or office. Nourish the organic things in your life to help remind you of your own roots, which are extremely important for you right now.

sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

You’re on a roll today, Sagittarius. Don’t let other people’s insecurities or shallow understanding about an issue get in the way of your progress. There’s a distinct advantage to the way you approach things. Feel free to exert your will on those who need strong direction.

Review higher education curriculum for employable graduates

Employability starts at training, not after landing on the dream job (British Council boss calls for curricular reform to prepare learners for job market October 9, 2014) Damning report have been repeatedly released saying

more than half of graduates from universities lack basic job skills, therefore, unemployable. It is sad that despite the continues clamour for the improved quality of higher education, universities are taking long to adjust, leaving many graduates to suffer as

potential employers opt for skilled workers, who may not have these degrees. The Ministry of Education, universities, Commission for University Education, employers and other stakeholders must work to improve the quality of

education. Employers will give their input on of the skills they seek in fresh graduates, university will adjust their curriculum, while the Ministry will give the financial and technical support to make our youth useful.

The potential employers will also give internships to shape the student towards quality. Graduating is not enough for us as a developing country; it must give an economic, social and cultural return. — Robert Juma Nairobi

Shabana eyes promotion to premier league Shabana’s almost decade absence from the Kenyan Premier League looks certain to end after they were awarded the six points they had contested against Agrochemicals and Homeboyz. The team moved to the top of Zone ‘B’ of National Super League with 40 points after Football Kenya Federation Leagues and Competitions Committee on Wednesday awarded Shabana maximum points after Agro-chemicals were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player.

Homeboyz had their coach Edward Manoah on the touchline despite serving suspension a fortnight ago at Gusii Stadium. The team is three points ahead of second placed Agro-chemicals with Zoo Kericho and Homeboyz lying third and fourth respectively. The Ugandan side will also play City Stars on Sunday in another friendly before leaving for Kampala the following day. The matches are part of activities lined up to celebrate KRA’s 2014 Tax Payers Week that starts next Monday. The event is held every October. Carl Tundo psyched up as Kisumu rally looms

HARD FEELINGS: Mario Balotelli in action for the Italian national team. His compatriot Ciro Immobile says the ever-absent Balotelli will not be missed as they take on Azerbaijan in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Ciro — Balotelli won’t be missed against Azerbaijan Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile insists absent compatriot Mario Balotelli won’t be missed when newlook Italy host Azerbaijan for the first of two Euro 2016 qualifiers tonight. Immobile’s positive start to life in the Bundesliga since joining the German side from Torino has coincided with a recall to the national squad in the wake of a

disastrous World Cup campaign. His impressive club form is in stark contrast to that of Balotelli, who is struggling to make an impact at Liverpool since quitting AC Milan and has fallen out of favour with new Italy coach Antonio Conte. Immobile is expected to start up front alongside Sassuolo striker Simone Zaza when Italy host Azerbaijan at the

Stadio Barbera in Palermo. Italy team manager Gabriele Oriali says the national team selectors will maintain a “revolving door policy”, but Immobile said the current crop of players rightly deserve their selection. “There are other strikers here who are playing very well. If they’re here, it’s because they deserve to be,” Immobile said at Italy’s Coverciano training

camp on Thursday. “I know Mario very well. He’s a good lad, but it’s the coach who picks the squad.” Conte said earlier this week: “Mario has started afresh, so it’s not easy. I think we need to give him time to settle at Liverpool,” “I make call-ups, not exclusions. Those are two very different things,” he added. Immobile was part

of the Italy squad that failed to get past the first round in Brazil where Cesare Prandelli’s side lost to Costa Rica and Uruguay having opened their campaign by beating England. Following an opening 2-0 win over Group H rivals Oslo in Norway, where Balotelli was also absent, Italy are looking to make it three wins from three.

Former national rally champion Carl “Flash” Tundo knows how crucial the 7th and penultimate KCB Kisumu Rally on October 18 will be on his title ambitions. Tundo will be pushing hard for a win, which would keep his title hopes alive. Tundo, who is driving a Menengai Oil-sponsored Proton Neo Satria S2000, is determined to rack up his third win of the season and the lead he had enjoyed after winning the season opening Malindi round. He will have to fight stiff competition from current champion and among them series leader Baldev Chager who has been immense in the last two seasons. “The battle was fierce at the 62nd Safari Rally. I had unlucky excruciating Day 2 puncture. In the second day I came back to slash Chager’s 2.5 minutes lead to 1.11 minutes after the last stage. It was an exciting finish,” he said. Chager has won two rounds in Machakos and the Safari. Tundo emerged the victor in Malindi and Kiambu while Rajbir Rai and Jassi Chatthe secured their maiden victories in Nakuru and Nanyuki respectively. “The fight is very close, usually in Kisimu a winner is found, but I want to push it to the wire,” said the four time national champion. Tundo won last year’s rally in Kisumu.

Kenya Sevens team eyeing the Olympics The National rugby sevens team steps to the pitch this weekend in the opening round of the HSBC Sevens World Series- in its 2014-15 season in Gold Coast, with their eyes set on the 2016 Olympics Games Rio-deJaneiro. The Paul Treu-led side will have to do better than their eighth place finish with 84 points last season and get to the top four finish with will guarantee them automatic qualification. Treu made drastic changes in his squad, bringing in six debutants in his team that will face newcomers American Samoa, Wales and South Africa in Pool B on Saturday. “Being an Olympic

qualifying year, I know it important to all teams. It will be a massive challenge for our young players to find their feet and keep striving for excellence. We have no option but to perform,” Treu said. Kenya opens its campaign against American Samoa at 4:40 am local time before taking on Wales at 8:01am. Kenya will face the Blitzbokke, Treu’s former employers, in their final preliminary match at 11:17am. Treu has a bad record against South Africa. He’s beaten them only once in eight encounters with the latest being at the Club Games where Kenya went down 20-0 as his country of birth lifted the Commonwealth title.

GOING FOR TOP HONOURS: The Kenya rugby sevens team will start their campaign of the 2014-15 HSBC Sevens World Series season this weekend.

Lid on ‘party animal’ George W. Bush lifted Australian tennis legend John Newcombe has lifted the lid on “party boy” George W. Bush and the drink-driving revelation that clouded his 2000 US presidential election campaign. Bush, who served as president from 2001 to 2009, admitted to the drink-driving arrest he kept secret for nearly 25 years just days ahead of the poll, after the story broke on US networks. The incident occurred in 1976 near his family’s Kennebunkport summer home in Maine. It followed a night’s drinking with Wimbledon champion Newcombe, who was also in the car. Newcombe has kept quiet since on what transpired but told Melbourne commercial radio station SEN late Thursday he was with the Bush family that night as a guest of George H W Bush, who was then director of CIA. He had not met the younger Bush but they were similar ages — Newcombe 32 and Bush

30. “So we went to the local pub along with Newcombe’s wife, Bush’s younger sister, and Peter Roussel, then press secretary to George H. W. Bush. “George was a bit of a party boy in those days,” Newcombe said of George W. “I noticed that George was sort of eyeing me off,” he said as they began drinking “reasonable-sized mugs of beer.” “I put on a bit of pace and he’d keep pace with me. A little silent game was going on. “After about four of these, I picked the glass up in my teeth without my hands and skulled it straight down and I said, ‘What are you made of, George?’ And so he had to do that.” Newcombe said he then drank another beer from the wrong side of the glass: “I looked at him and go, ‘Have you got any guts, George, or what’s your story?’ So he did that.” Bush, who was fined Sh12,750 for the offence, gave up drinking in 1980s.

Binge with bush: Retired tennis star Newcombe says he and former US president George W Bush enjoyed a night’s drinking in a car.

Hodgson impressed by players’ win desire England coach Roy Hodgson says he was impressed by his team’s patient approach in breaking down San Marino at Wembley in their Euro 2016 qualifier. The home side scored twice in the first half against the world’s joint-bottom side, before running out 5-0 winners. “We worked hard to break down a stubborn team,” Hodgson told BBC 5 live. “The longer the game went on we knew it would open up and we’d get more chances, and that’s what happened.”

Everton defender Phil Jagielka headed England into the lead, before Captain Wayne Rooney grabbed his 42nd international goal, a penalty, after San Marino’s Andy Selva struck his face with his boot. England managed 12 efforts on goal in the first half, and 22 after the break as they picked up the tempo while their rivals tired. There were other goals from Danny Welbeck, substitute Andros Townsend and an own goal by Alessandro Della Valle when he deflected

Rooney’s cross into his net. Victory took England top of Group E on goal difference ahead of Lithuania, with both teams on six points after winning the opening two games. “In the second half our passing tempo was a bit quicker, but once you go 2-0 up and 3-0 up it gets harder for them to keep going,” said Hodgson. “What also impressed me was the players’ desire to work hard to get the ball back. If they can develop those skills then it would stand them in good stead going forward.”

Wanyama suggests that Stars be rebuilt Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama says there is need to start serious rebuilding of the national team if there is to be bright future for the national team. The Southampton FC midfielder spoke on Thursday as the national team held their last training season ahead of tonight departure for Marrakech for Monday’s friendly with the hosts, Morocco. “If we dwell on the aborted Africa Cup of Nations dreams there will be nothing good that will come out of it, time to fold our sleeves and work hard for a bright future,” he noted. “I have talked with the national team coach Bobby Williamson in details, he has assured me of his plans to build a young team. The

several young players in the squad is a positive,” he added. Wanyama’s desire is to see more consistency going forward while discouraging disbandment of national teams which to him will not guarantee results. “Results comes when there is good understanding between the players, I believe going forward we shall be seeing a relatively familiar team representing Kenya,” he added. On the upcoming friendly, the captain says football Kenya federation is on the right track by ensuring the national team gets high profile friendlies. “Last time we played Egypt and now Morocco, that is very encouraging of you ask me, we are on track, my prayer is we maintain the momentum,” he said.

Euro 2016: Slovakia stun Spain European champions Spain suffered a first Euro Cup qualifying defeat for eight years, falling 2-1 to Slovakia on Thursday. Iker Casillas misjudged Juraj Kucka’s 30-yard free-kick as the hosts took the lead in the Euro 2016 Group C clash. Substitute Paco Alcacer equalised for Spain with a composed low finish from eight-yards. But former Chelsea midfielder Miroslav Stoch won it with a close-range header after a cross by Michal Duris

The final whistle was greeted by a huge roar as the visitors, who defeated Italy 4-0 in the Euro 2012 final, lost for the first time in 37 World Cup and European Championship qualifying matches, a run stretching back to 2006. “We showed patience but we were not effective and their keeper was superb,” said Spain manager Vicente del Bosque. Egypt must defeat Botswana in Gaborone tonight to retain a realistic chance of reaching the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. A disastrous Group G start last month saw the Pharaohs lose 2-0 away to Senegal and 1-0 at home to Tunisia, leaving them bottom of the table, six points adrift of the front-runners. Botswana are equally desperate for maximum points at the National Stadium having lost 2-1 away to Tunisia and 2-0 at home to Senegal. Egypt won three consecutive Cup of Nations titles between 2006 and 2010 but then failed to qualify for the 2012 and 2013 tournaments. Coach Hassan Shehata, mastermind of the title hattrick, quit after the 2012 exit and American Bob Bradley was in charge for the 2013 campaign. Shawky Gharib, assistant to Shehata and Bradley, was

promoted and his prequalifiers promise that Egypt would regain the title seems extraordinarily optimistic. Angry Egyptian football officials have warned the former national team midfielder that he will be sacked if the country suffers the humiliation of a third consecutive qualifying flop. “National team results are the responsibility of the coaches and we will hire a foreigner if Gharib fails to take the team to Morocco,” Egyptian Football Association President Gamal Allam warned. Gharib suffered a late blow when Hull City defender Amed Elmohamady, one of the seven overseas-based players in a 25-man squad, withdrew due to injury. Egypt are a team in transition and Gharib has not found a new ‘spine’ to replace retired defender Wael Gomaa and midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika and injured striker Mohamed ‘Gedo’ Nagy.
