Academic giant Ali Mazrui passes on
From Page 1 Muslims for Human Rights chairperson Khelef Khalifa said Mazrui’s remains will be flown to Kenya for burial since he had wished to be buried at Fort Jesus in Mombasa County. “His nephew confirmed that the professor’s wish was to be buried in Kenya,” Khalifa said. Deputy President William Ruto led other Kenyans in condoling with the family over the death. “I would like to condole with the family and friends of Prof Mazrui. His contribution transcends all
borders,” Ruto wrote on his twitter account. Mazrui was born on February 24, 1933 in Mombasa. He studied at schools in Mombasa before proceeding to Manchester University where he obtained a distinction in his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1960. He later obtained a Masters degree from Columbia University in New York a year later. In 1966, Mazrui graduated with a doctorate from Oxford University. After attaining his PhD, he joined Makerere University in Kampala,
Uganda, where he served as head of the Department of Political Science and later Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He served at Makerere until 1973, when he was forced into exile by dictator Idi Amin. In 1974, he joined the University of Michigan as a professor and was later appointed the Director of the Centre for Afro-American and African Studies where he served between 1978 and 1981. In 1989, he was appointed as the Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities and the Director of the
Institute of Global Cultural Studies (IGCS) at Binghamton University, State University of New York, where he served until his death. Mazrui also held two concurrent faculty appointments as Albert Luthuli Professor-at-Large in Humanities and Development Studies at University of Jos, Nigeria, Andrew D White Professor-at-Large Emeritus and Senior Scholar in Africana Studies at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. He was also served as a special advisor to the World Bank.
He was also the first non-president chancellor of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology during retired president Mwai Kibaki’s administration. In 2005, he was selected as the 73rd best intellectual in the world on the list of Top 100 Public Intellectual by UK’s Prospect Magazine and Foreign Policy of US. Kilio Cha Haki is among the many books he authored. He is survived by a wife and six children.
JUDGEMENT DAY: South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius (centre) arrives in a Pretoria court on Monday for the verdict on his murder trial. The runner was found guilty of one weapons-related charge involving a shooting at a restaurant for which he can get anything from a suspended sentence and a fine to as many as 15 years in prison.
Justice Masipa to rule on Pistorius case today South African athlete Oscar Pistorius returns to court today for sentencing after he was convicted of killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The ruling on whether he goes to prison rests with Judge Thokozile Masipa, who presided over the high-profile trial that lasted several months.
The judge ruled that Pristorius was guilty of killing his girlfriend although she cleared him of murder. He was found guilty of culpable homicide, the South African term for unintentionally killing a person. The charge is equivalent to manslaughter. He was, however, granted bail
pending sentencing. The hearing is likely to take several days as prosecution and defense get chance to put arguments and evidence before the court for Masipa to consider. There is no legal minimum or maximum sentence for culpable homicide in South African law. A typical sentence is five to eight
years. But it is a principle of South African law that the sentence should be tailored to the culprit as a whole person instead of the crime. The judge also found Pistorius guilty of one weapons-related charge involving a shooting at a restaurant. The maximum penalty for the
offence is five years behind in jail. But he could get a lesser sentence, such as a fine or loss of gun licence. It’s likely that a pre-sentence report will be presented to the court, which may recommend a sentence, although the judge is not bound by it.

Tenant kills landlord in Kawangware
Kenyans among world’s most loyal mobile networks clients Kenya has some of the world’s most loyal mobile customers, a survey has revealed. Technology solutions provider, Tecnotree compared mobile customer loyalty across a sample of markets in Africa, Europe and Latin America and found that Kenyans and Argentinians are the most loyal clients when it comes to telco services. Subscribers in the UK, Brazil and Nigeria are the least loyal and, therefore, most likely to switch networks, or change their brand of phones. Tecnotree’s research was aimed at providing an in-depth look into customer loyalty in each nation. The study found that Kenya,
A tenant killed his landlord over rent dispute in Kawangware area, Nairobi. Police are looking for the tenant who escaped soon after the incident. Police said the tenant was enraged by the landlord’s move to lock his house over unpaid rent for two months. The suspected assailant used a knife to attack the landlord killing him on the spot before he escaped on foot.
Argentina and Germany were the most loyal mobile customers with 66 per cent, 57 per cent and 53 per cent respectively, of mobile subscribers having remained with their existing Customer Service Providers or network for at least two years. The report also highlighted the least loyal mobile users on the list with 44 per cent of mobile users in Nigeria, 42 per cent in the UK and 30 per cent in Brazil having dropped their service providers over the past 12 year. The research revealed that service providers drive loyalty by offering device upgrades and better tariffs, as well as bundled services that allow customers to choose from a variety of options.

Police officers charged with teen girl’s murder
Two police officers, including the Kinango CID boss, accused of killing a 14-year-old girl in Kwale, have been charged with murder at the Mombasa High Court. Appearing before High Court Judge Maureen Odero, DCIO Veronica Gitahi and police officer Isaa Mzee pleaded not guilty to killing Kwekwe Mwandaza and were released on a Sh500, 000 bond. The hearing has now been set for November 19 and 20. The girl was shot dead by police during a raid at their house, as were allegedly looking for her uncle on suspicions of involvement in terror-related activities. Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo had defended the officers saying they shot the girl after she tried to attack them with a machete. The assertion was later dismissed by the deceased girl’s family and human rights activists, who termed

Turkey allows US to use its military bases to fight Islamic state militants Turkey has agreed to let the US use its military bases in the campaign against Islamic State militants, says US National Security Adviser Susan Rice. Ms Rice said the US welcomed the new agreement, which included use of the Incirlik air base in Turkey’s
south. The US is leading air strikes against IS, which has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria in recent months. They had complained that airstrikes alone were not enough to combat the militants and that ground forces were required.
Turkey shares a border with both countries, but has so far ruled out any ground operation of its own. Speaking to US broadcaster NBC, Ms Rice said Turkey had recently agreed to let the US use Turkish bases and territory “to train moderate Syrian opposition forces”
and “engage in activities inside of Iraq and Syria”. “That’s the new commitment, and one that we very much welcome,” she said In recent days, IS fighters have advanced against the Syrian town of Kobane, which has a border
crossing point with Turkey. The militants, who control some areas of Kobane, have been subjecting the rest of the town to a heavy bombardment but are continuing to meet stiff resistance from Kurdish forces there.

Civic groups furious over MPs’ new power Civil society groups have opposed a move by Parliament to summon Cabinet Secretaries for questioning by MPs even as a first batch of ministers prepare to face the legislators tomorrow. Parliament amended its Standing Orders to allow for ministers to respond to MPs’ queries on the floor of the House in a move that has since elicited sharp criticism. The CSs have also expressed discomfort with the new law when they held a breakfast meeting with the MPs last month. They say balancing their ministerial duties with appearance before the House would be difficult considering they do not have assistants. The Commission for the Implementations of the Constitution (CIC) has also opposed the move. And on Sunday, civil society groups said Parliament’s directive is aimed at intimidating the Executive and not performing any oversight role. “We are saying today that it is unnecessary. The National Assembly seeing that it has
become powerful, is looking for ways of bullying the Executive,” National Civil Society Congress president Moris Odhiambo told a news briefing Sunday. They termed Parliament’s move as unconstitutional and called on CIC not give up on the

misrepresenting and misinterpreting that provision,” he said. Last month, the National Assembly amended its Standing Orders to form a general oversight committee to be chaired by the Speaker. The team’s members comprise

Experts inch closer to Diabetes Type 1 cure Scientists have inched closer to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes after reporting a “tremendous step forward” in new research. The disease is caused by an immune system that destroys cells that control blood sugar levels. But a team at Harvard University, US, used stem cells to produce hundreds of millions of the cells in the laboratory. Tests on mice showed the cells could treat the disease, which experts describe as “potentially a major medical breakthrough”. Beta cells in the pancreas pump out insulin to bring down blood sugar levels. But the body’s own immune system can turn against the beta cells, destroying them and leaving people with a potentially fatal disease because they cannot regulate their blood sugar levels. The team led by Prof Doug Melton say they will attempt to replace the approximately 150 million beta cells using stem cell technology to find out if it can cure diabetes. It is different to the far more common type 2 diabetes which is largely due to poor lifestyle.

The Kenya Wildlife Service has asked newly-appointed ambassadors, high commissioners and heads of missions to help Kenya sustain advocacy on total ban on international ivory and rhino horn trade. Director General William Kiprono asked the diplomats to help in demand reduction drive on wildlife and wildlife products to stem the poaching menace. Ivory, rhino horns, reptiles, pangolins, and sandal wood
are some of the wildlife and wildlife products that are being trafficked in international black markets. Addressing the ambassadors at an induction programme at KWS headquarters, Nairobi, on Monday, Kiprono asked the envoys to use their missions to lobby other countries to help reduce demand for the endangered species. Poaching activities have increased in recent years with 302 elephants and 59
rhino killed in Kenya in 2013 alone. Since January this year, 116 elephants and 26 rhinos have been gunned down by poachers. “In the last six months, we have turned the corner and the worst is behind us. We hope to keep the cartels on the run and make them face the fullest extent of the law,” Kiprono told the diplomats. He said the Government is fully aware of the magnitude of wildlife crime and has mobilised resources locally
and internationally to curb the vice. He said habitat loss, human wildlife conflict due to growth in human population and climate change were other challenges facing conservation. He urged diplomats to use their missions to encourage international community to invest in conservation areas and assure tourists that Kenya’s national parks and the country are safe destinations.

Planned Liberian strike could damage Ebola fight Thousands of Liberian health-care workers are set to begin an indefinite strike at midnight on Monday, which could hurt global efforts to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. The National Health Workers Association wants an increase in the monthly risk fee paid to those treating Ebola patients. The health workers also want personal protective equipment and insurance. 95
of their colleagues have so far died from Ebola. Liberian health officials are however asking nurses and medical assistants not to go ahead with a national strike as the epidemic continues. Liberia’s Assistant Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah said a strike would have negative consequences on those suffering from Ebola and would adversely affect progress made so far in the

Only a monster does that.” Child specialist, Dr. Amy Barton, told the CNN the event “was one of the most shocking case” he had witnessed.

The risk fee is currently less than $500 (Sh44,000) a month, on top of basic salaries of between $200$300 (Sh17, 600 and Sh26, 400). Staff are now seeking a risk fee of $700 (Sh61,600) a month. By last week, Ebola had spread to
five continents. The UN announced yesterday that it could take another three months to halt its spread. All this comes even as a US nurse who treated an Ebola victim in Texas tested positive for the disease in what further deals a blow to containing the spread of the epidemic. So far, Ebola has claimed 4,039 lives with Liberia being the worst affected country alongside
Sierra Leone and Guinea. Locally, panic gripped the country yesterday over a possible first case of the virus after a passenger from Juba bled to death at the JKIA in Nairobi. Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia later told reporters that tests for both Ebola and Marburg virus, a sister killer of the hemorrhagic fever that has been reported in Uganda, were both negative.

Steven Xiao, a former Chinese mining firm executive, was officially charged with 104 counts of insider trading in a Sydney court. Xiao was taken to custody over alleged trading in uranium explorer, Bannerman Resources shares in 2011 ahead of a take-over offer from Hanlong. Researchers may have shwon that beef products form some of the most expensive parts of a basic Kenyan dish. Yet scholars of Egerton University’s Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development have discovered that in Kenya, the poorest households spend more per month on sugar than meat. Beef and other types of meat is the third largest food expenditure item Nairobi after dairy products. Other vital products include milk and wheat products and bread, says senior researcher Francis Karin. Nairobi households spend about 1,200 a month on dairy products, Sh750 on wheat products and Sh640 on meat.

THE BIG KNOT
MONDAY, OctOber 13, 2014
By Lisa Ang’iro and Cynthia Mukanzi After eight years of dating, Marcus Antonie and Hellen Kimaru took the big step to seal their union by exchanging vows in an intimate wedding witnessed by their three year old son, extended family members and friends at the Don Bosco Catholic Church in Upper hill, Nairobi. The church was spruced with peach, pink and yellow flowers on the pews. Hellen looked regal as she walked down the aisle in the arms of her parents. Marcus could not help but beam at the sight of his beautiful bride as she made slow strides towards him. Hellen wore a white satin gown with lace appliqués and sheer at the back. Her custom made gown had a cathedral train that trailed behind her. She accessorized her look with a Russian veil, ruby earrings and necklace. Before getting her desired wedding gown, Hellen went through a shaky process but when it eventually
“I wanted something different from the regular ball gown. My train is what I love most about my gown” materialized, her gown was more than perfect. “I wanted something different from the regular ball gown. My train is what I love most about my gown,” Hellen told X news. Her gown was designed by Zuri Brides. Marcus was in a blue suit with gold waist coat and cravat. For a moment Hellen was overwhelmed by emotions as they finally got the chance to pledge their vows of love and eternity to one another. “I had been waiting for this moment forever. The reception grounds at the Public service club were colorfully decorated in purple schemes and tons of flowers. Who is the best of the corporate ladies? By Robert Laban Grace Njeri was last Friday crowned the first Miss Corporate World in Nairobi County, 2014. Ms Njeri’s focus shifts to November 22, when winners from 21 other counties will take on each other on the runway to find who will be the fairest of them all. “It is too early to figure out on the plans for the finals, but I am confident I will ultimately do well,” the Nairobi County queen said. Christine Okuda and Maryann Mwaliko were the second and first in the run-up respectively.
By Stellah Kimani It was a beauty galore at the Miss Kenya 2014 beauty pageant held at the Carnivore last Friday which saw Lydiah Manani beat 13 other contestants to wear the highly coveted crown. Standing at a towering 5’9 feet, Lydiah, a teacher by profession proved that indeed beauty and brains are the winning formula to any pageant. She oozed confidence and strength right from her professional poise, strutting in high heels to answering the judge’s questions with panache’. “It takes passion and sacrifice to reach where I have. I thank God for this opportunity to represent Kenya at Miss Earth in Philippines and everyone for all the support you have given me,” said an ecstatic Lydiah. A star studded panel of judges which included footballer Dennis Oliech, former Miss Kenya Esther Muthee (1999), Miss World
Kenya Natasha Metto (2010) did not base their judgments on beauty alone, but also crowd appeal, dress fit, poise and diction. Grace Wanene clinched first runners up while second runners up got their titles from earth elements with Yvonne Mbula –fire, Theresa Mwende - air and Rosemary Wanjiru - water. This year’s event did not lack its share of drama as there were complaints of poor communication between the organizers and some designers. “Much more has to be done to improve the Kenyan fashion industry. It is wrong for hardworking designers to be kept waiting for hours,” said Letoya Johnstone, a Public Relations Manager at Nato House Designs. If Lydiah wins the Miss Earth pageant, she will be the second Kenyan after Winfred Omwakwe, who was crowned in 2003 after the winner, Dzejla Glavovic, was dethroned for failing to comply with the requirements of her contract.

FASHION PARADE
MONDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2014
IT’S ALL GLAM AND GLITZ AT ZEN GARDENS By Queen Munguti Up and coming fashion designers were given a platform to showcase their collections last Saturday evening at the serene Zen Gardens. Dubbed the Kenya Discovery Fashion weekend, the rookies were hosted for their inaugural event by J.S designs. The founders also showcased two of their own collections dubbed the ‘Spirits of India.’ African-chic and Indianmodern inspired designs seemed to be the theme for most designers. The strut was spectacular. Jabs collection by Shagufta Jabeen were first on the runway with an Indian- modern collection that brought out the sophistication in Indian designs. Next came Sheera designs, who showcased an Indian inspired jewellery collection for both male and female including kids. Lulu house brought the ever growing trend of the afro-chic
casual designs on the runway. Their designs featured a male and female collection including handbags, and yes, man bags too made a debut! Then came the elegant and classy Anki designs by Beyanne Chanel that featured couture pieces for the ladies and tailor fit suits for the men. Cindy Wanjiku was another designer who brought the afro- chic designs on the runway. Hers an all chic and sleek female collection. Vanessa Vonore was the last designer to showcase with an urban-street collection. However, the event was not without blemish; there was a low turnout which organizers blamed on the location but that did not take away the glamour from the event. Talent came in the name of one Vanessa Vonroe who proved to be just as good a musician as she is a designer. She wowed the audience with two beautiful songs off her yet to be released album. Blunder on the runway:
Best
Nameless
Listen to Nameless and his Butterfly because in this song the only artiste without a name captures your heart and imagination. He Luganda is implacable, his rhythm is still on point and yes we still want to see his eyes behind those shades, maybe if we flew like a butterfly?
Vonore suffered some embrassement as one of her models catwalked on the runway with a visibly torn dress. One could tell that the models lacked experience
as their catwalk seemed strained causing them to walk in slow motion and most had difficulties walking in high heels. Was there no choreographer?
Gloria Muliro Gloria Muliro manages to implore every sense. The ease by which she narrates her stories is bound to make any one reach for her song. Whether it is in a collabo or solo, she does not disappoint. She has made even Man Ingwe, look good!
in trouble Ok even if you are still red hot and can pull off a bandana in 2014, you can not run away from the law.Ragga heartthrob Redsan is still recovering from the spat with the police after allegedly being mistaken for being a terrorist. A source close to the artiste confirms that Red, is planning to take a holiday to’ forget’ the unfortunate incident. The hit maker was however not confirming the location of the getaway.
This is how dames dress up Angelina and the entire Jolie-Pitt clan ventured over to Buckingham Palace as the actress was being honored by Queen Elizabeth II. Angelina received her Honorary Dame Grand Cross award in the Palace’s 1844 room, while wearing the most appropriate lilac jacket and skirt, worn with a classy up-do. It matches the Queen’s outfit in length and general pastel-ness almost perfectly. She receives this award for her work combatting sexual violence in devastated regions, and plans on continuing her efforts. Now that is how a Dame dresses!

Tighten entry points screening to keep Ebola and Marburg out
As they say, prevention is better than cure. The government is putting a brave face telling us they have the right measures to prevent spread of Ebola to Kenya, but it is scary to learn a passenger from Juba collapsed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport two days after
a warning from World Bank (Kenya at risk of first Ebola case in 30 days October 10, 2014). Although the government has vehemently denied the death resulted from Ebola or its sister disease, Marburg, it is worth noting that it will be almost impossible to
kick the two deadly diseases out if we do not keep them out. Some regular passengers going through JKIA screening have lamented the process is not consistent. The screening officials do remain thorough when they feel, increasing chances of the
disease sneaking in in such a moment. We must not take anything to chance. All entry points including the porous border have to be guarded more than we do to terrorists and smugglers. West Africa and Uganda are not
far. Someone can sneak in through unnoticed and by the time we realise, the virus could be at its toll. — Benedict Juma-CBD

The bankers face Nakuru in the semi-finals after the latter beat Homeboyz 30-8. The second semi-final will pit Kenya Harlequins against Mean Machine who beat Nondescript 11-3. Coach Curtis Olago praised his side who staged a major comeback to beat Impala in a thrilling tie under floodlights. “The fighting spirit was encouraging given that we were training at the break, I talked to the players. I am happy they responded well to advance to the semi-finals,” he said. KCB trailed 0-11 at half time. Impala were first off the blocks with a commanding first
half performance. The match saw KCB lose Captain Philip Wamae in the third minute to injury. Impala had a penalty in the 10th minute squandered by Sammy Oliech. In the 15th minute, the bankers got a penalty but Marlin Mukolwe kicked wide. Oliech converted the second penalty attempt in the 18th minute as Impala took a 3-0 lead. The bankers got the opportunity to level scores in the 27th minute but Mukolwe’s boot failed to click. Another infringement by KCB handed Impala a penalty in the 33rd which Oliech slotted in to extend the lead to 6-0 before making it 11-0 at the break. After the break, Peter Karia scored to mark the start of a comeback.

Loew upbeat even after Germany loss to Poland Germany coach Joachim Loew insists the world champions will still qualify for Euro 2016 after a shock defeat to Poland. Germany suffered the first defeat in 33 qualification matches when they lost 2-0 to Poland in Warsaw on Saturday. Poland claimed an historic first win over their
neighbours at the 19th attempt, less than three months after Germany were crowned world champions in Rio de Janeiro. The result leaves Germany fourth in Group D behind leaders Poland, Ireland and Scotland after two matches. “It’s not surprising that every team now wants to give a few more percent (effort) against
the world champions and there have been significant changes to our team since the World Cup,” Loew said. “In the next two years, our players will pick up experience from which they will learn. “Life is not harder, despite the defeat, in fact it’s much, much nicer since the World Cup.

Jeptoo the ‘Queen of Chicago’
HAIL THE QUEEN: Rita Jeptoo declared herself the queen of Chicago after successfully defedning the Chicago Marathon title yesterday.
Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo defended her title in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon yesterday. She gave herself a new title too. “I’m the queen of Chicago,” she said. Jeptoo, 33, pumped her fists as she crossed the finish line alone Sunday morning in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 35 seconds before kneeling to the ground in elation. A second-place finish would have guaranteed her a World Marathon
Majors series championship and a Sh4.5million prize, but Jeptoo said she had from the outset planned to beat all the competition. Jeptoo’s 2014 campaign has already been on fire, after winning her third Boston Marathon early in the year and becoming the first woman to defend that title since Catherine Ndereba in 2005. “It was more important to come here to defend my title,” she said.
“I like the course. I was very happy again.” Since losing in a down-tothe-wire sprint to Atsede Baysa in 2012, Jeptoo has established herself as a dominant runner, winning four straight marathons — the last two in Boston and Chicago In Jeptoo’s wake, Ethiopia’s Mare Dibaba finished second in 2:25:37, and Kenya’s Florence Kiplagat finished third in 2:25:57. Jeptoo’s time wasn’t close to her
Okocha - Nigerian football is dead Former Nigeria captain, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, says football in the country is “long dead and gone” and has refused to blame the Super Eagles or coach Stephen Keshi for the team’s 0-1 defeat to Sudan in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. A ferocious header by striker
Bakri Abd Elgadir in the closing stages of the first half flew past goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and put the hosts ahead of the reigning African champions. The result means Nigeria now walk a tight rope towards qualifying for the biennial African football showpiece billed for Moroc-
co in 2015. Okocha leapt to the defence of the current crop of players and the coach, insisting the nation’s game is failing immensely. “Anyone that blames Keshi or the boys is short sighted. Our football is long dead and gone. This is just the confirmation,” Okocha tweeted.

The pack of women started out quickly with a 5:17 first mile but slowed considerably after that. In the men’s race, Eliud Kipchoge beat a strong field that included Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele
to win the 2014 Chicago marathon in an impressive time of 2:04:11. Two other Kenyans Sammy Kitwara and Dickson Chumba (2:04:32) finished second and third respectively. Bekele came in fourth in 2:05:51. Kipchoge took control of the race at the 24th mile point when he unleashed a 4:33 mile. Up to that point, the race had been close with Kitwara, Chumba and Bekele close by.
Valdes did not reject Liverpool trial says agent Victor Valdes’ agent, Gines Carvajal, has rubbished reports that the former Barcelona goalkeeper rejected an offer to go on trial at Liverpool. The 32-year-old has been heavily linked with a move
to Anfield since leaving the Camp Nou in the off-season after his contract expired. Valdes is still on the mend, having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March, although reports in the British media suggesting
the Reds had invited the Spaniard to prove his fitness during a four-day trial. Carvajal said “Liverpool didn’t ask us to train for four days. We haven’t rejected it because it [the story] is false.

Kenya blew cold in Gold Coast Sevens
After the opening round of the HSBC Sevens Series in Australia, Kenya lies 14th on the log with only two points. This is after the team reached the Shield Finals after fallen out of the main cup and Bowl competitions. The team won only two matches against American Samoa and Japan in the shield semi-finals. Fiji won the opening leg after beating Samoa 31-24 in the finals as England defeated South Africa 28-0 to take third place. Kenya won her first tie against American Samoa
followed by defeats by South Africa and Wales. The Paul Treu side lost to Portugal 17-19 in Bowl quarters, beat Japan 17-15 in Shield semi-finals before losing to Canada 7-40 in the finals. The last time Kenya dropped to Shield was in Hong Kong last season where they beat Portugal 17-10 in the final. Treu remains optimistic his relatively young side will turn in positive results though he admitted he might have to bring in the experienced players he axed
from the side. “It was a massive jump for most of the players from club to top notch level, and they have shown a lot of promise,” said Treu. “There is time before the next leg, that indicates we might have some changes, this was more of trying new approaches to the game,” he said. Kenya have been handed a tough Pool C at Dubai Sevens due December 5 and 6. They face England, who finished third at Gold Coast, Australia and Mike Friday’s USA.

USA thrash China for first Volleyball world title Kimberly Hill scored the point that sealed a historic first women’s world volleyball title for US on Sunday with a 3-1 win over China. The US women easily took the first two sets, but allowed two-time champions China back into the final which they won 27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24. Hill scored 20 points in the game and was then named most valuable player and best spiker of the tournament She smashed the winning point that sparked wild celebrations among the US women. “We came here to make history and we made it. It was a tough battle,” said US coach Karch Kiraly, who won Olympics gold in men’s volleyball and beach volleyball. “After we got a 2-0 lead we knew China would never give up. Hamilton extends lead after Russia win Lewis Hamilton cruised to victory in the inaugural Russian Grand Prix on Sunday. The win capped a 1-2 finish for Mercedes that clinched its first Formula One constructors’ title and stretched his lead in the championship. Nico Rosberg came in second and trails his teammate by 17 points in the drivers’ standings with three races remaining. Hamilton, who was fastest in practice and qualifying, won his fourth straight race and his ninth of the season. He received the winner’s trophy from Russian President Vladimir Putin who had pushed for his country to have a Formula One race. “We’ve had an amazing week, Russia’s been so good to me,” Hamilton said from the podium. “It was kind of surreal for the president to be presenting the award,” he said. The British driver started from pole but lost the lead when
Rosberg beat him to the first corner. But Rosberg braked hard to ruin his tyres, cut a corner before he was told by his team to let Hamilton back into the lead for gaining an unfair advantage. Rosberg replied: “I have to box because of the vibrations.” Hamilton took the flag 13.6 seconds ahead of Rosberg as Valtteri Bottas came in third in a Williams, 17.4 seconds back. “I was looking after the tires, managing the fuel, it was pretty straight-forward,” Hamilton said. “I really enjoyed the race and Russia has been one of my favourite races.” Hamilton became only the fourth driver in Formula One history to win nine races in a season. He equalled Nigel Mansell’s record of 31 victories for a British driver. The other three with nine or more wins in a season were Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Mansell.
Mumbai fall as India soccer league starts
India’s new football league kicked off with a spirited which organisers hope will ignite passion for the game. Atletico de Kolkata beat Mumbai City 3-0 in the first match of the Indian Super League (ISL). The league has lured former international stars such as Spain’s
Luis Garcia and France’s Nicolas Anelka out of retirement. Cricket hero Sourav Ganguly argued that there was room for football in the cricket-obsessed country of 1.25 billion people. “It may not be cricket but it will be the next biggest sport,” Ganguly, coowner of Kolkata, ahead of kick-off
in the eastern city. “Everybody will be pleasantly surprised as the tournament goes on,” the former national captain said. Former Ethiopian captain Fikru Lemessa, 28, scored in the first half, while 33-year-old Spaniard Borja Fernandez netted in the second.

Rooney goal lifts England Wayne Rooney scored his 43rd international goal as England beat Estonia 1-0 to preserve their perfect Euro 2016 qualifying record. Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan was sent off for a second booking early in the second half but Roy Hodgson’s England still laboured to see off the Baltic minnows. They finally made the breakthrough thanks to Manchester United striker Rooney, who curled home a free-kick with 17 minutes remaining to maintain England’s 100 percent record after three Group E matches. Rooney is now within one goal off Jimmy Greaves England record and only six behind record holder Bobby Charlton’s tally of 49. Equally pleasing for Hodgson was seeing his rock-solid defence achieve a fifth successive clean sheet for the first time in eight years. “It was hard work. We played well in the first half without taking our chances and that meant there was an air of frustration setting in,” Hodgson said. “Everyone was aware that when you have played well you have to take at least one chance. Luckily we did that in the second half. Slovenia moved into second
place behind England thanks to a 2-0 win against Lithuania. Defending champion Spain, who lost 2-1 to Slovakia, got their campaign back
on track with a 4-0 win in Luxembourg in Group C. David Silva and Paco Alcacer scored in the first half, with Diego Costa snatching the third on 69 minutes for his
first international goal in his seventh appearance. Substitute Juan Bernat made it 4-0 with a debut goal on 87 minutes. Eyebrows were raised
Federer wins first Shanghai Masters Roger Federer won his first Shanghai Masters title with a straight-sets victory over Gilles Simon to move to number two in the ATP rankings. The Swiss let out a huge roar after unseeded Frenchman Simon hit a forehand into the net to give him a 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-2) victory. “To win the biggest tournament in Asia is a treat,” said Federer, who lost in the 2010 final to Briton Andy Murray. “I got lucky to come through the first round after saving five match points. It’s been a dream week.” Federer, 33, won the opening set with his only backhand winner down the line. Simon led 6-5 in the second set and had two set points but two unforced errors allowed Federer a way back and the 17-time Grand Slam winner took advantage. For 29-year-old Simon, who went off court for a medical
time-out after the first set, it was a second defeat in a Masters final, having lost in Madrid to Murray in 2008. He matched Federer for
much of the match from the baseline but the Swiss dominated when he came to the net, winning 24 of 35 points. In both
tie-breaks Federer played aggressively and he set up four championship points with a blistering cross-court forehand return.

Williamson optimistic as Stars take on Morocco Kenya coach Bobby Williamson has no doubt Kenya will do better when they play Africa Cup of national hosts Morocco in Marrakech, this evening. The relatively young squad left the country Friday evening with the coach saying he has faith in the young team. “I have faith in our young team, the players are great but obviously with room for improvement, hopefully we will be more active with high profile friendlies,” he said. There were no major shocks perhaps the dropping of Wilson Obungu who has been regarded as Kenya number two in the absence of Arnold Origi. Williamson opted for his former club goalkeeper at Gor Mahia, Jerim Onyango but it is Norway-based Arnold Origi who’s expected to start between the sticks this evening.
