Kenyatta jets out for ICC as private citizen
President Uhuru Kenyatta avoided VIP treatment at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as he left the country early today for The Hague, Netherlands, where he is scheduled to attend tomorrow’s status conference on his case at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Kenyatta, who on Monday temporarily handed over presidential powers to Deputy William Ruto in acting capacity, used the lounge for ordinary departures in what will further lend credence to the claim that he is travelling to The Hague in his capacity as a private Kenyan citizen. The President, who ended weeks of speculation as to whether he would attend the conference, made it clear he was going to The Hague in a personal capacity - not as President - so as not to compromise the sovereignty of Kenyans.

“Therefore, let it not be said that I am attending the status conference as the President of the Republic of Kenya. Nothing in my position or my deeds as President warrants my being in court,” he said in a special address to Parliament on Monday. He is facing charges of crimes against humanity in connection to the violence that followed the 2007 General Elections in which more than 1,000 Kenyans were killed and about half a million others displaced. Kenyatta is expected to explain allegations that evidence against him had been withheld, something for which analysts think prompted him to
sign away his powers so as to delink himself from the Government. Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has accused President Kenyatta’s government of withholding evidence crucial to the case. But his lawyers have always argued that the case should be thrown out. Judges will consider the arguments presented by rival sides at the two-day conference that starts today. At the airport, Kenyatta arrived accompanied by wife Margaret, daughter Ngina and a few leaders. Those who boarded the plane with him include Cabinet Secretaries Michael Kamau (Transport), Charity Ngilu (Lands) and Phylis Kandie
(Tourism) and a host of MPs and Senators. Kenyatta did not address Kenyans at the airport where he arrived in three four-wheel drive vehicles with minimal security. Chief of Defence Forces General Julius Karangi (pictured left) and police chief David Kimaiyo were also at the airport to see him off. However, there was little colour as is usually the case when he travels as Head of State. At the airport, the President mingled freely with politicians who had been waiting to see him off before he boarded a Kenya Airways flight for The Netherlands’ commercial capital, Amsterdam.
Former EPL soccer star faces jail term for fraud
A disgraced professional football player, who pretended to be a Premier League star, faces fines of up to millions of UK Sterling Pounds and years in prison for his crimes. Medi Abalimba, 24, was arrested when he falsely claimed he was multi-millionaire Chelsea midfielder Gael Kakuta in order to get expensive drinks and designer clothes on credit. Abalimba once earned £4,000 (Sh575,000) a week playing for Liverpool, but his career took a nasty turn after he suffered an injury in January 2011. Fearing that friends would dump him, he took them for a night out in London where he duped staff at Cirque du Soir Burlesque Club into giving him champagne on credit after pretended he was a UK Premier League footballer. Abalimba backed his claims by showing photos of himself posing in soccer shirts with Premier League stars. He was later arrested after he attempted to buy clothing worth more than £20,000 (Sh2.8 million) from a store near Manchester using what was described as a suspicious credit card. The store staff refused to sell him the items and alerted police. When he appeared before a Manchester Court on Monday, Abalimba admitted to three charges of fraud, taking a Range Rover without the owner’s consent and jail beckons: Medi Abalimba (right) was arrested when he falsely claimed he was multi-millionaire Chelsea midfielder Gael making off without paying for petrol. Transport Bill seeks harsher traffic penalties The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged Members of Parliament to pass the 2014 Traffic (Amendment) Bill which seeks to further limit speed at road stretches near schools. Addressing a breakfast meeting in Nairobi early today, NTSA representatives led by Luanga Kamau said the Bill is key in
protecting children from accidents and reduce the number of deaths on the roads Key proposals in the Bill include reducing vehicle speed around schools from the controversial 50 kilometres per hour to 30kph. It also seeks to have vehicles transporting school children fitted with standard safety features.
The Bill also seeks for installation of calming measures such as bumps and rumble strips on roads near schools and imposition of penalties to be based on the speed exceeded. “A minimum of Sh10,000 will be fined for drivers who exceed the speed limit by 5-10kph, and a maximum Sh25,000 for those who
exceed the speed limit by 31kph,” Kamau said. A representative from the Ministry of Transport, Martin Eshiwani, said the biggest challenge facing the sector is changing drivers’ attitude towards driving safely. He urged motorists and pedestrians to obey traffic signs and rules.
Speaking at the event, policy, legislative and management consultant, Kiragu Wachira, urged the Cabinet Secretary to provide continuous inspection of vehicles transporting children and ensure drivers go through specialised training.

Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to discoverers of brain’s ‘GPS’
Fasting for three days can make you healthier Fasting for three days can reenergize a person’s entire immune system as it causes the body to start producing new white blood cells, a recent study has found. Avoiding food for 72 hours also protected cancer patients against the toxic impact of chemotherapy. Even among the elderly, scientists have found that fasting is a breakthrough, which they describe as “remarkable”. Although fasting diets have been criticised by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts it into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection. Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people
suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients who are on chemotherapy or the elderly, whose immune system becomes less effective as they age, making it harder for them to fight off even common diseases. “When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged,” said Prof Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the University of California. “We are investigating the possibility that these effects are applicable to many different systems and organs, not just the immune system,” added Prof Longo.
How depression pushed varsity student to death
DRUGS: George Muragu Mugo claimed that he was tired of taking drugs and that death was his best option out.
Depression arising from failure to accept a mental condition drove a university student to commit suicide last weekend. George Muragu Mugo, 23, was discovered hanging from his single house in Bahati, Nakuru County. A note he left behind explained that he took his life because he could no longer continue suffering from his mental frailties, which he says, affected both his academic and social life. The body of the fourth year Bachelor of Arts in Tourism student at University of Nairobi (UoN) was found hanging by his parents who broke into his house after he failed to turn up for breakfast. He claimed that he was tired of taking drugs and that death was his best option. Bahati OCPD Duncan Nguthu while confirming the incident said
the deceased used a piece of bed sheet to hang himself. “He locked himself in a house and hanged himself with a piece of bed sheet. He said in a note that he was tired of living a stressful life occasioned by his mental condition,” the police boss said. In the note, Mr Mugo warned parents to take care of their children suffering from similar conditions saying depression could force them into committing suicide. “There are so many people who end up committing suicide due to challenges encountered in life. Parents should take responsibility of helping their children to accept such conditions and engage them to specialists including taking them for regular medical attention,” he said in the note. The body was later taken to the Nakuru Municipal Mortuary.
High Court suspends new traffic regulations The government’s efforts to curb road accidents suffered a huge blow yesterday after a court declared new transport regulations illegal. The ministry of Transport through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) early this year imposed new traffic regulations on public service vehicle including banning night travel and fitting of
digital speed governors, which was aimed at reducing road accidents. However, public service vehicle owners who protested the move in court have won the battle after a judge ruled that the coming into force of the new regulations was illegal. High Court Judge Justice David Odunga also allowed the petitioners to sue the government
for compensation for the losses they suffered during the period the new regulations were in place. He said the regulations never followed due process of being tabled before the National Assembly and were as such null and void. “It was necessary that the regulations be laid before the national assembly,” Justice Odunga said in his ruling. He
particularly singled out Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau (pictured right) for acting in excess of his powers to punish bus owners by banning night travel “for a mistake not of their own making.” As such, the court ruled that public service vehicle owners be compensated both the cost of the suit and for the losses they suffered.
You may know where you are and where you’re going to, but do you know why you know that? The Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine has honored three neuroscientists, whose work is helping answer that question. John O’Keefe, along with May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser, discovered cells that form a positioning system in the brain, our hard-wired GPS. “Those cells mark our position, navigate where we’re going and help us remember it all, so that we can repeat our trips,” the Nobel Assembly said in a statement. Their research could also prove useful in Alzheimer’s research, because of the parts of the brain those cells lie in, the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex. O’Keefe, a British neuroscientist who is also an American-born U.S. citizen, made the first discovery in 1971, when he came upon a nerve cell in the brain of a rat that was set off whenever the rat was in a particular place, the statement said. The prize money of 8 million Swedish kronor (about Sh106 million) took an interesting split. Half went to O’Keefe and half went jointly to the Mosers, who are a couple. Monday’s ceremony at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, will be followed by the announcement of the physics prize Tuesday, the chemistry prize Wednesday and the economics prize on October 13. The prize for literature will be awarded on Thursday.

Kenyans to acquire online ID numbers Kenyans will from next month acquire an online identification number. The process being spearheaded by the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology is aimed at securing online transactions and boosting e-commerce. ICT Principal Secretary Joseph Tiampati says under the ID number, individuals would be required to obtain electronic signatures which would help identify transaction parties. Tiampati has said companies and individuals using Kenya Revenue Authority online services are expected to pioneer the service. He says insecurity issues associated with has forced the Government to fast-track the rolling out of the digital online certificates. The documents will require individuals to acquire electronic signatures that would help secure transactions. “There is nothing to fear... the government has put in place adequate measures to ensure the system is secure,” he said.
Ebola spreads to Europe as Spanish nurse tests positive The deadly Ebola outbreak continues to spread with a Spanish nurse becoming the first person to contract the virus outside the West Africa region. Spanish Health
ebola raiDs europe: aid workers and doctors transfer manuel Garcia Viejo, a spanish priest who was diagnosed with the ebola virus while working in sierra leone, from a military plane to an ambulance as he leaves the torrejon de ardoz military airbase, near madrid, spain.
Minister Ana Mato said Monday a test had confirmed the assistant nurse has the virus. The woman helped treat a Spanish missionary and a Spanish priest, both of
whom contracted Ebola in West Africa. The two died on return to Spain. Officials said she developed symptoms on September 30 but was not hospitalised until
this week. Her only symptom was a fever. “We are working in coordination to give the best care to the patient and guarantee the safety of all citizens,” the minister said.
Investigations are under way to identify everyone the assistant may have been in contact with. No other cases have been reported. The assistant was one of
about 30 health staff in Spain who helped treat Ebola patients. The news came amid growing fears in US that the disease may have spread to the country. President Barack Obama has announced plans to screen passengers flying to US. “As I’ve said from the start of this outbreak, I consider this a top national security priority. This is an issue about our safety,” Obama told reporters on Monday. “We will work on protocols to do additional passenger screening, at source and here in US,” he said. More than 3,400 people have died of the outbreak, with majority of victims in West Africa. Obama criticised foreign governments for not acting “as aggressively as they need to” against the outbreak. “Countries think they can sit on the sidelines and just let US do it…that will result in a less effective response, a less speedy response, and that means that people die. “And it also means the potential spread of the disease beyond areas in West Africa becomes more imminent,” he said.

American teenager arrested on way to join extreme jihadists An American teenager was arrested while on his way to join a group of extreme jihadists, who have already beheaded three American citizens in the last two months. Mohamed Hamzah Khan, 19, was arrested by authorities at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago where he was due to board a plane to Istanbul, Turkey. He has been accused of attempting to provide aid to ISIS,
the jihadists group that is being fought in Iraq and Syria. In a letter authorities said he left behind, the teen from the Chicago suburbs told his parents he was leaving the United States to join ISIS. A criminal complaint also said he invited his family to join him in the three-page letter, which authorities found in the bedroom he shared with a sibling in
Bolingbrook, Illinois. But he warned them not to tell anyone about his travel plans, the complaint said. “First and foremost, please make sure not to tell the authorities,” he wrote, according to the complaint. “For if this were to happen it will jeopardize not only the safety of us but our family as well.” A round-trip ticket was purchased for Khan from Chicago to Istanbul,

Woman says she dug up dad’s grave ‘with respect’ A US lawyer has moved to court to ask the judge to withdraw a statement written by her client, who is accused of disrespecting his dead father by digging up his grave. Among them, according to the complaint: drawings of the

Nash’s statement read: “All this was done for the right reasons and I know my father would be Ok with it.” “What we all did was to dig up my father’s coffin, Eddie Nash, looking for documents. We did it with respect.” She is accused for unearthing, cracking the casket and searching through the remains of Eddie Nash
who died in 2004. The Mirror says lawyer William Albrecht says her client made statements before the Coos County officers read her rights over self-incrimination. The county Attorney John McCormick said she waived her rights over selfincrimination when she turned up at the police station at “free will” in June. The father, who died at 68, has since been reburied.

Kenya’s BRCK in CNN top 10 start-ups to watch
Kenya’s router manufacturing company, BRCK, has been listed among CNN’s top 10 startups this year. The device was designed to meet power and internet connection problems experienced in urban and rural areas. The router, which goes for Sh17,850, weighs about half a kilogramme. It is used to connect areas that have limited or uneven connectivity to the internet. It switches between Ethernet, Wi-Fi and cellular networks to provide web access for up to 20 devices. A large customised battery allows BRCK to survive a blackout and provide steady power flow for
about eight hours. Users get online by using a Sim card or connecting to wired or wireless networks that are supported by a cloud-based system, which automatically harmonises the device with data from nearby cellular providers. “A lot of the need for this is in the developing world and you can also update 20 tablets in a few minutes instead of waiting for half a day,” says Reg Orton, BRCK Chief Technology Officer. The company’s slogan, “If it works in Africa, it will work anywhere,” has held true to its promise as more than 850 routers have been exported to 45 countries across the world.

As many new business owners have realised, online platforms that allow customers to access goods and services from a computer is a smart way of boosting profits. Google Analytics, a free online tool, helps business owners keep track of how many people they reach. It also allows them know goods or services that are the most popular. “With a new business, it’s all about the numbers,” explains Tanya Prive, founder of financial services group, Onevest. How much traffic does your website generate? Where does the majority of that traffic come from? What are some key demographics of your target audience?” She says all of the questions play a key role in the success of a business. Google Analytics lets its users view the most and the least popular items, articles and services on their website. Some of the information is grouped in terms of days, weeks, months, or years. A number of local enterprises, organisations and start-ups use Google Analytics as a tool to drive their business. They include retailer Soko la Jamii, Tech Arena, Knight Frank and Mum’s World Africa, among others. The tool is free but large commercial users like major companies can pay an annual fee of roughly Sh13 million for the premium version.

NSSF plans 30,000 new low cost housing units The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) plans to build 30,000 low-cost houses in Mavoko, Machakos County, to tap into the growing real estate market. The project is expected to provide housing facilities for thousands of Kenyans in and around the area. The units, which will be set up
on a 960-acre piece of land, will be the fund’s largest real estate project. The investment comes at a time when the county is gearing up for a transformation, given the ongoing plan to set up a Sh800billion development known as Konza City. Earlier this year, NSSF Managing Trustee, Richard Langat said
the Fund will collect rent from tenants once the development is complete. Langat said the Fund plans to construct the units on 1,010 acres in Mavoko. Though the asking prices and size of the units have not yet been revealed, the announcement comes as rent prices for one to three bedroom
units average Sh10,000 a month. Real estate dealer Hass Consult reports that the average monthly rent for a three to four bedroom property is about Sh30,000. Meanwhile, the average value for a four to six bedroom property is Sh34.9 million while the value for a one to three bedroom property is Sh11.6 million.

Sifted flour prices jump 10 per cent
The price of sifted maize flour has jumped almost 10 per cent to Sh118 up from Sh108 over the past year, numbers from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) have shown As the cost of living in Kenya continues to rise, high prices have been weighing down consumers. Security guard, Samwel Tonui is one of the people hard hit by the changes, having substituted ugali for bananas since the latter is relatively cheaper than flour. While the prices of basic commodities and housing are currently on an upward trend, survival has forced Tonui and other consumers like Naykoe, who hawks fruits on Kenyatta Avenue, to make drastic adjustments.
start his company with only three computers. “I have six SEO operators, three web designers and eight content writers and editors who are learning the art of making money thorough technology. I expect them to establish their own firms after gaining experience,’’ says Bwire. On the contrary, a report published by the New York Times indicates that technological evolution in developing world, Kenya included, snatch away at least half of working hours from people working in offices and also blamed lack of technology discipline for decaying morals in the society.
In August last year, two kilograms of sifted maize flour cost an average of Sh108 based on the consumer guides provided by the Bureau of Statistics. Now, it is sold at roughly Sh118 in many retail outlets. If the trend continues, some households may not afford a number of basic commodities, including flour, a staple food for most Kenyans. However, the Kenya government hopes to lift half of the country’s poor from poverty within the next two years. The World Bank says that 42 per cent of Kenyans are living in squalor. By 2015, the government intends to reduce the percentage by half to be in line with the first target of the country’s Millennium Development Goals.
POTENTIAL: Young men browse the internet on a laptop. Technology if well exploited can create wealth and job opportunities.
Eveready Managing Director, Jackson Mutua, recently announced that the firm will shut down its plant in Kenya and rely on supply from its affiliate’s factory in Egypt. The company blamed the move on the decline of the D size battery market in Kenya due to illegal, cheaper imports. Officials from The Export Promotion Council (EPC), the
Kenyan business community, undertook a market survey in South Eastern DRC a few years ago. Kenyan investors and traders were invited to take up the export and investment opportunities in the DRC. The findings of the market survey revealed that batteries are a commodity that the DRC desperately needs as it can cut costs by importing
its supply from Kenya, which is closer than western and middleeastern importers. The DRC is the sixth leading destination for Kenyan exports. The country imports goods worth close to $1 billion (Sh89 billion) every year. Kenya services only 4 per cent of this market, which is means the country only gets Sh3.6 billion in revenue from the DRC each year.

had to stand in a chamber, raise their hands or stand in front of security officer for a pat down. Alfa3 can screen up to 400 people per hour, double the speed of current machines. The machine’s inventor, Dr. Naomi Alexander, says her innovation has significantly high accuracy of more than 50 per cent unlike the current scanners, which give many false positives. Detection of non-metallic substances such as gels and liquids is done with precision because of the machine’s high resolution
power. Alexander says: “It’s a type of thermal imaging, so we see the difference in temperature between the body and objects that aren’t part of the body.” The inventor, from Madrid, says Alfa3 is an advancement of the millimetre wave imaging currently in use, but it relies on passive technology, drawing no attention of the scanned. Outdoor covert vigilance is an added benefit of the gadget because it scrutinises people entering places without their knowledge.

ourroots Not all that glitters is gold. Black henna promises the polished look of permanent tattoos, but is really a health hazard in the making.
Henna tattoos the new rage in town Henna tattoos are the best bet for those who go green with envy after seeing somebody with a cool permanent tattoo but the mere thought of needles puncturing their skin gives them a migraine. The tattoos are not only painless but natural too. Henna tattooing has been around for decades with most of us associating it with the elaborate designs adorned by Muslim and Indian brides. Sama Waseem, a professional henna artist, says henna tattoos have seen a drastic metamorphosis from the traditional practices, which were reserved for special occasions and were mostly a women’s affair, to an all new rage of temporary tattoos and inter cultural design mixing. She adds that men have also not been left behind in this trend with ‘masculine’ henna tattoos attracting men in their drones. “Nowadays people get the tattoos for fun and the use of henna in nontraditional designs is on the rise. There is also a lot of indo-arabic designing mixed with contemporary Western touches,” says Waseem. She adds that in the olden days, the art was passed down from one generation to the next but nowadays people have made use of technology with online
quizzes and training programs being offered for certification purposes. “There are plenty of YouTube channels where people can learn simple designs and also interested candidates can enrol for online courses at Ash Kumar beauty academy,” saysWaseem . Not all that glitters is gold, henna enthusiasts should beware of using black henna, which although promises the polished looks of permanent tattoos, is really a health hazard in the making. A recent case of black henna tattoo gone bad is 11 year old Alfie Abbot, who was left with blisters and scars on his little arms after his artist used black henna instead of natural henna. Catherine Cartwright, a henna expert advises henna enthusiasts to avoid using black henna which is toxic and can cause blisters, scars and sores. She says natural henna paste is usually green or dark brown in colour with a distinct smell of spinach, pine or tea tree oil which are fragrances from the essential oils used to make the paste. “Natural henna will leave an orange stain that will darken to red brown or dark brown, but black henna will leave a black stain and the paste is usually odourless,” she says.
Although Eid Al-Adha celebrations have just passed, it is never too late to give yourself an artistic henna treat.

British tricked Moraa to kill Kisii warrior The arrival of the British in Kisii town, formerly known as Getembe was not faced with much resistance. Motaroki Chuma, 59, says the community had been warned by their prophet, Sakawa, that they will die if they fought the ‘bird with a red beak’, referring to the colonialists. But Otenyo, a warrior took the courage to strike this invader. In 1904, warriors went on a riding expedition. Kisumu administration, which was head of the Nyanza region, was not happy. The regional administrator sent soldiers and police to Getembe. They killed more than 100 people, raped women, and drove herds of cattle away from the community. A district commissioner, G A S Northcorte, was stationed in this town in 1907. The community corrupted the name
Nortcorte to Nyarigoti. Moraa, a prophetess and foster mother of Otenyo, was not happy with the British move. She asked Otenyo to kill Nyarigoti. One day the DC was riding a mule down town leading cattle his men had raided. The prophetess gave his foster son alcohol and medicine to protect him from gun bullets. Chuma says Otenyo hid under a bridge and when the commissioner was passing, he struck his shoulder with a spear, wounding him badly. Nyarigoti later succumbed to the wound. Songs were composed in praise of this hero, who had killed an enemy. The British had to revenge. They tricked Moraa to collect elders to a reconciliation ceremony, which Otenyo was to attend. The firing squad executed Otenyo in the present day Kisii Stadium. It is not clear where his body was buried.
Underwater museum a must visit
The Cancun Underwater Museum in Mexico has a series of underwater sculpture installations. The sculptures were created by British artist, Jason deCaires Taylor, assisted by five other sculptors. The sculptured models are created using PH neutral marine concrete and are modeled after the locals. In total, the Museum has 500 sculptures in its three galleries. Visitors can dive and snorkel to see the sculptures. With time, the sculptures will become coral reefs because of the material used to sculpt them.

Celebrity guilty pleasures confirm stars are just human after all. Being an 11-time Olympic swimming medallist does not hinder Ryan Lochte from digging into pizza and chicken wings. “I don’t know if it’s a guilty pleasure, but pizza and wings. Every Friday night, without fail, since I was 8 years old, [I eat] pizza and wings,” he told Huffpost Celebrity. Lochte majors his swimming on backstroke, freestyle and backstroke. The American swimmer has bagged 77 medals in grand international competitions.

When Biggie’s voice thundered into the house to applaud them for an excellent performance, the contenstants went gaga, strutting into the house in excited optimism. Kenya is represented by Sabina Anyango Stadler and Melvin Alusa. For the first time, Rwanda has made its appearance in the show.
Time: 1hr 34 min PLOT Jay (Jason Segel) and his wife Annie (Cameron Diaz) are a couple who are still in love 10 years and two kids later. They, however, are missing passion in their love life. To get the passion back, they decide to film themselves having sex trying out all different positions. It seems like a great idea until the three hour video gets accidentally sent to their family, friends and workmates. They go on a frantic search to reclaim the video and their reputation. Verdict You would think a movie with Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel would have you doubling over with laughter. But no, it is so bland and drab. It needs some sunshine to lighten it up.

Tighten police command to secure better response The blame on police’s slugging action over the Mpeketoni attacks should be an opportunity to seal the loopholes in the service (Police slow to act on terror alerts, says IPOA, October 06, 2014). One of the leakages identified to
have caused the slow response from the officers is the disjointed and decentralised command structure of the security system. Harmonising command will make police respond adequately on a single order because they will be working towards one
goal. Police Inspector General David Kimaiyio should take this as part of the reforms in the force to secure peace for the country. The Constitution requires him to harmonise the command structure, but he seems
reluctant. Security is a sensitive matter that needs urgent response and constant changes in the security organs to better service delivery. Acting on terror intelligence no matter how trivial they may seem is not optional. If police
cannot act on threats, can they handle an ambush or they will run and hide as the terrorists ravage our citizens? Kimaiyo must make necessary changes as recommended by IPOA to ensure we remain in peace.

Bianchi’s dad in Japan after horror smash Jules Bianchi’s father was rushing to Japan Monday where the Formula One driver was in intensive care with a serious head injury. Bianchi suffered one of the worst crashes the sport has seen in nearly two decades. The French driver underwent emergency surgery on Sunday after slamming into a recovery vehicle on the Suzuka track near the end of a rain-sodden Japanese Grand Prix. Formula One’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), said the 25-yearold Marussia driver had been rushed to hospital after suffering a “severe head injury”. A small crowd of journalists had gathered Monday outside the Mie Prefectural General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi, the nearest hospital to the track. The hospital was refused to comment on the driver’s condition, citing patient privacy and directing enquiries to the FIA. Venezuelan Formula One driver Pastor Maldonado was also seen at the hospital, where Felipe Massa had been spotted Sunday evening. All three drivers are represented by agent
Nicolas Todt, who was understood to be on his way to Yokkaichi from Paris. Bianchi’s father was flying from France to be at his son’s bedside and was expected to arrive at the hospital Monday evening. “Jules is seriously injured,” Philippe Bianchi told France 3 television on Sunday. “He is undergoing surgery for a head injury and we will need to wait 24 hours to know any more on his condition.” An unconscious Bianchi had to be removed from the wreckage of his car after the horror smash, which happened as he ploughed into a recovery vehicle lifting Adrian Sutil’s prone Sauber away from danger after the German had skidded into a wall on lap 42. Championship leader Lewis Hamilton won Sunday’s race, which had been threatened by a typhoon and began behind the safety car with drivers complaining over team radios that they were unable to see through the spray. Formula One has largely avoided serious accidents since 1994, when Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenburger died at San Marino.
IN TROUBLE: Unconscious Bianchi was taken to hospital and the race stopped on lap 46.
Djokovic, Sharapova China Open champions World number one Novak Djokovic crushed Tomas Berdych 6-0, 6-2 yesterday to win the China Open and maintain a remarkable 100 per cent record in the Beijing tournament. Meanwhile, French Open champion Maria Sharapova was forced to battle hard to overcome Petra Kvitova 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the women’s final —
a victory which moves her into second place in the rankings. Serb Djokovic was 5-0 ahead in the second set as he tore through his Czech opponent with a brilliant serving display. As he was staring at an embarrassing defeat, a stunned Berdych laughed as he pretended to hand his racket to a ball-girl, suggesting that she may be able to take on his
opponent. In the women’s final, it was a gritty performance from Sharapova, who gave Kvitova her first loss in nine games. The fourth seed Russian appeared to have carried into the match the determination she showed in her 6-0, 6-4 semi-final defeat of Serbian world number nine Ana Ivanovic.

LeBron wins on Cavs return
Falcao eager to stay on at Man United Colombian striker Radamel Falcao on Monday expressed a desire to remain at Manchester United beyond the end of his loan spell after opening his account for the club against Everton. The 28-year-old scored a close-range winner in United’s 2-1 Premier League victory on Sunday — his first goal since signing on a season-long loan from Monaco. United will reportedly have to pay around Sh5.84 billion next year to make the move permanent, but Falcao says he already has designs on a long-term stay at Old Trafford. “Me and my family are happy here, and we would like to stay for many years at Manchester United,” Falcao told the club’s in-house television channel, MUTV. Falcao’s strike, after Angel di Maria’s first-half opener had been cancelled out by Steven Naismith, took United into the top four for the first time this season. He also posted a picture on his Instagram account of him posing with team-mates inside the United changing room, accompanied by the caption: “Very happy with my first goal and win in Manchester Unted.
‘it will take us a while to get on the same page but every day is another chance’ LeBron James was a winner in his first NBA appearance for Cleveland since leaving for Miami in 2010 as the Cavaliers defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 107-80 in an international exhibition game Sunday. James started but played only 20 minutes and did not take the court in the second half, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting with four rebounds and four assists. The pre-season tune-up was his first game for Cleveland since a playoff loss to Boston four years ago. James won two titles and reached the final two other times in four years with Miami, but again signed with the Cavaliers in July, saying he hoped to bring an NBA title to his home region. Kevin Love, obtained by the Cavaliers from Minnesota in a major trade deal, had eight points and 11 rebounds in his Cleveland debut. “So far so good,” Love said. “We’re only in the second week of training camp. We’re still putting things together on the court. It’s still a process. We’ll get better. We just have to have some continuity out there. It will take us a while to get on the same page but every day is another chance.” Cleveland coach David Blatt, who guided Maccabi Tel Aviv to this year’s EuroLeague crown before joining the Cavaliers in June, was a winner in his first appearance as an NBA coach. The Cavaliers continue their pre-season play on Saturday at Rio de Janeiro against James’ former club, the Miami Heat.
Ofuwoku backs his battered City Stars to survive
still in it? nairobi City stars coach Robin Ofuwoku (in blue tracksuit) celebrates a rare win. He is backing his players to win the remaining four KPl matches to survive relegation.
Nairobi City Stars coach Robinson Ofuwoku has blamed poor officiating for 4-1 defeat to champions Gor Mahia on Saturday. The perennial survivors are set to be relegated from the Kenyan Premier League this time round as they lie second from bottom in the log with 20 points from 26 matches. Despite that, the Nigerian refuses to give up and is even confident his boys will give a good fight in the remaining four league matches. “Lack of finances coupled with change of guard in the technical bench has contributed to the current state we are in, poor officiating is not left behind. In the top flight you expect the best referees to oversee matches,” Ofuwoku said referring to the
Saturday match where he said the referee, not Gor, was the winner. But even as Ofwoku exudes confidence, his players will have stand toup when it matters most as they face four tough matches beginning with away fixture against Sony Sugar in two weeks’ time. This will be followed by a home tie against Muhoroni Youth, followed by a meeting with the already relegated Nakuru All-stars. They will end the season with Mathare United. Ofwoku, however, remains unshaken saying there is nothing impossible about winning these matches. “The players have to remain confident, fearing opponents will not be good to us, I want to believe the remaining four matches are winnable,” he said.
USIU Flames too hot for Blades and the Storms USIU Flame’s Zipporah Odhiambo says the team is doing superbly well in the women’s basketball Premier League after routine 61-38 and 52-37 victories over Ulinzi Blades and Storms respectively over the weekend. Odhimabo, who was outstanding during the match, saw her side remain at the helm of the table with 34 points from 17 consecutive victories. Flames, the Zone Five club champions, made a good start with a 13-7 first-quarter lead before Ulinzi outscored them 11-8 in the second quarter. “We are in good form if you ask me, there are areas we need to work on going forward but I am happy with the progress” she said. In another women’s match, Strathmore University beat KU Oryx 41-30 at the same venue.

Federer revs up for major season finish
BACK IN ACTION: Roger Federer will be back in action next week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters eager to spark a major finish to the season.
Roger Federer is looking forward to his front row seat as the Emirates ATP Race To London unfolds. After a three-week break, including a family holiday with wife and two sets of twins, the 33-year-old Swiss is back in action next week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters and is eager to ignite a major finish to the season. Federer’s focus is beginning to shift to the season finale in London and who will be joining him there. Shanghai is set to play a key role in determining final Showdown line-up. “The (Barclays ATP) World Tour Finals is huge for me, a big goal,” said the Basel native on Sunday in Shanghai. “It’s what I wanted to qualify for. It’s where I’ve played so well in previous years.
It’s always been a very special event for me throughout my career, ever since I qualified here (in Shanghai) in 2002 for the first time, I guess.” Federer was victorious in Shanghai when it hosted the Tennis Masters Cup in 2006 and 2007. Since it became an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in 2009, Federer’s best showing has been a runner-up finish in 2010. It’s a trophy that Federer is keen to add to his collection of 22 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crowns. Seeded third, Federer is due to open his campaign against Leonardo Mayer or Di Wu. He could face London contenders Kei Nishikori or Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals.
Sterling keen to remain at Liverpool, insists Rodgers Brendan Rodgers is “adamant” Raheem Sterling is staying at Liverpool and insists the youngster will sign a new contract. Sterling is locked in negotiations over a new deal and has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. But whether Sterling wants to stay at Anfield, the manager said: “Yes. Absolutely adamant. I don’t think there is anything other than that.
“His agent is a good agent and he understands this is the perfect place for him.” Rodgers is confident a deal will be agreed eventually. “It’s not a big issue for us. Ian Ayre has spoken with his representatives and he is quite relaxed. The club is dealing with the agent so everything is calm.” The boy is remarkably happy here and there are no secondary thoughts about anything else other than continuing to play for Liverpool.
“Also, to continue with his development because he still has a lot of growth and for that the best place for him to be is here. His representatives respect that and the club respects that. So that will get sorted out in time.” Liverpool have given the youngster one new contract that takes his pay to about Sh7.3million a week. The team is prepared to offer a new deal that will double the pay.

Juve boss blasts striker over Roma loss remarks Juventus Sporting director Giuseppe Marotta has hit back at Francesco Totti (inset) over the attacker’s views following Roma’s 3-2 loss to the reigning Serie A champions on Sunday. Giallorossi, 38, was furious after Sunday’s defeat, claiming the Bianconeri only won after referee Gianluca Rocchi awarded the hosts two penalties. He accused him of failing to notice Arturo Vidal standing in an offside position in front of goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski for Leonardo Bonucci’s late winner. Marotta said Totti crossed the line with his remarks, though, and believes Juventus deserved
the win. “I have great respect for Totti as a player. It’s understandable that he’s upset about the result but what he said was unacceptable,” Marotta said. “In the past Juve have had to bear the brunt for others’ mistakes, but when the team has won it has won legitimately and deservingly from a footballing point of view. “Every year Juventus are accused of being favoured in dubious or unclear situations, but I believe that these decisions even themselves out over the course of a season. “When we won the penalty it reminded me of the Juventus

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique insists the freedom granted to Lionel Messi does not extend to the dressing-room. Messi has been granted a freer role under the new Blaugrana boss after a more restricted position in Gerardo Martino’s side last term. While he admits the team does what it can to accommodate the Argentina ace’s movement in matches, Luis Enrique has stressed the 27-year-old receives no such special treatment behind the scenes at the club. “He has such ability that he has complete freedom in phases of play. We adapt to him and he adapts to us so that he is involved as much as possible in
the game,” Enrique said. Midfielder Xavi Alonso admitted earlier this week he is not happy with a bench role , but Enrique is delighted to see a “rebellious streak” in his players. “That’s the goal of every player at 34 or 20. They all want to play and help the team,” he said. “I love the fact that all the players have a rebellious streak in that respect. The day that he plays you’ll be asking me why (Ivan) Rakitic or (Andres) Iniesta aren’t.” Gerard Pique is another to have found his playing time curtailed this season. Luis Enrique often favours Javier Mascherano and Jeremy Mathieu at the heart of defence.

Wanyama wins top award Courtois gets all-clear after head injury Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been given the all-clear after he sustained a head injury during his side’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in an English Premier League (EPL) match played on Sunday afternoon. The Belgium international had to go off in the first half of Sunday’s Premier League game after a collision with Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez and was taken to hospital for tests. “Chelsea Football Club can confirm Thibaut Courtois went to hospital during our Premier League game against Arsenal yesterday (Sunday) for precautionary tests on a head injury. Those tests came back all-clear,” Chelsea said in a statement published on their website. “Thibaut was treated for a minor cut to his ear and was released from hospital last night.
