Demanding that we go there (The Hague) and not giving us a chance to speak is a total waste of time. As a matter of fact, taking us there is utter nonsense. — President Uhuru Kenyatta

Heroic reception for Uhuru

President Kenyatta returned to the country early today to a grand reception at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where he was received by a delegation led by his deputy William Ruto and a host of supporters. The Kenya Airways plane carrying the

President touched down at JKIA at about 6.30 am from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Kenyatta had gone to The Hague for a status conference on his pending trial at the International Criminal Court.

Heroic reception for Uhuru

From Page 1 On arrival, he inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Kenya Defence Forces. He was briefly entertained by groups of traditional dancers before holding a short meeting at the Presidential Pavilion where he was briefed on the events that occurred while he was away. Addressing hundreds of supporters

who had gathered to receive him, Kenyatta said the Government would seek to fulfil all pledges it made to Kenyans. He later proceeded to his Harambee House office through Outer Ring and Jogoo roads in Eastlands where he addressed supporters along the way. “They thought I would refuse to honour the summons to appear in

court but I heeded the call contrary to the expectations of many,” he told supporters at City Cabanas during a brief stop-over. In a thinly veiled attack on the ICC, the President reinstated his earlier position that there was nothing substantive that required his personal presence in court. “They just took us there to sit without anything being said,” the

President said. He said he had heeded the summons because it was him, and not Kenya, that is on trial. He had on Monday said he would not subject the sovereignty of Kenya to any other jurisdiction on account of his attendance of the ICC Status Conference. At Hamza area, along Jogoo Road, the President warned people out to

give Kenya a negative name abroad, saying the Government will not allow it. He also made stop-overs near City Stadium and the Country Bus Station before his entourage snaked through Landhies Road and Haile Selassie Avenue to his Harambee House office along Harambee Avenue.

Parents to address teachers standoff

Kenyans don’t trust family members with travel advice Most Kenyans do not trust their friends and family members to give them good travel advice, a new survey has revealed. Travelstart, one of the largest and fastest growing online travel agencies in Africa, carried out a recent study on the travel patterns of Kenyan tourists and found that people would rather refer to an expert for travel advice. It was revealed that 59 per cent of Kenyan travellers use online travel agents while planning their trips. Only 22 per cent said they preferred getting recommendations from friends and family before going online to search. The rest said they acted in response to travel adverts, aimed at a Kenyan

audience. This particular group said they prefer to book their flights online because it’s free, easier and convenient. They also said that booking flights online is cheaper and quicker than using a local agent. While on holiday, almost half of respondents prefer discovering culture and food while 26 per cent prefer relaxing. Before returning home at the end of the holiday, 60 per cent get a few souvenirs to take back home. “More and more Kenyans are discovering the convenience and value offered by online tools when planning their dream holidays,” Bryan Kariuki, Country Manager of Travelstart Kenya, said.

Employers’ body finds pro-religion ruling unfair On Wednesday, Justice Linet Ndolo of the Industrial Court ruled in favour of three Postbank workers, who had sued their emplyer for compelling them to work on Saturday, their day of worship. Justice Ndolo said that by the bank doing this, the bank was in violation of the employees’ right to observe their day of worship.

“Matters of conscience and religion are uniquely personal and for an employer to simply insist that its employees must report to work on Saturday and ignore their day of worship is to miss the point,” she said. In their defence, Postbank had noted that granting orders in favour of the trio would create a precedence where employees of different religions will

insist on taking time off to observe their various days of worship, something that the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) agrees with. “There are things that are entrenched in the constitution, which then make it difficult for an employer to argue out such a case. However, I think the ruling was a bit rigid and could pose a challenge

to the employer’s right to manage the enterprise,” FKE boss Jacqueline Mugo told XNews. “However, I think such matters should be left for discussion between the employer and the employee because such a ruling might set a precedence where employees can decide they need any day off for worship.

The Kenya National Association of Parents (KNAP) is set to hold a meeting next week to discuss the stand-off between teachers unions and their employers TSC, which has already threatened to disrupt forthcoming KCSE and KCPE national examinations. KNAP chairman Musau Ndunda described as unfortunate the stalemate that has stalled negotiations between the unions and the government over push for more allowances by the tutors.

Woman sues States for Facebook page A woman has sued the US government after it created a fake Facebook page containing photos of her, including one that showed her half-naked. The government acknowledged that one of its agents had created the page without telling Sondra Arquiett although it was initially suggested that she had “implicitly consented” to the action because she had granted officers access to her mobile phone.

Ebola re-opens bitter race wounds A nasty race war has been brewing ever since Liberian’s Eric Duncan, 42, died of Ebola in his native Liberia. Duncan was under treatment in an isolated ward at a Dallas hospital. The former driver of a courier company, tested positive in Dallas on September 30, 10 days after arriving on a flight from Monrovia via Brussels. He fell ill a few days after arriving in US and even after informing hospital medical staff that he had been in Liberia, he was sent home with a pack of antibiotics.

A section of immigrants feel supremacy battles between the black and white races are still alive. When Ebola attacked Africa, the whitecontrolled media houses said there is no cure. But when two Americans died of the disease, an experimental cure was suddenly available. The Centre of Disease Control claims the vaccination can’t work on black people. What is so different between black and white people that the cure can only work on whites and not black patients? Kenyans living abroad

British Council boss calls for curricula reform to prepare learners for job market The higher education curriculum should be reformed to give students relevant skills for the job market. Speaking this morning during the launch of a report dubbed Universities, Employability and Inclusive Development, British Council Director of Education and Society, Dr Jo Beall, said the current curricula does not give students skills applicable to diverse environments. The curricula does not sharpen learners to set up personal businesses. “There is enormous onus on

colleges and universities to deliver relevant education tailored to the 21st century. This includes producing graduates with ability to work in multi-cultural systems and across multi-location contexts,” Beall said. He said content should be updated to incorporate entrepreneurial skills in gradates so that they can start business after study and improve chances of investment. The report says about 65 per cent of graduates have realised job opportunities are limited and want to venture into self-employment but

lack adequate skills. The report says higher education institutions should not compromise on quality, and should instead increase access to affordable and competitive courses. The research was carried out in sub-Sahara Africa, including Kenya. The study discovered that majority of employers prefer skilled staff to fresh graduates who only have knowledge. “Employers complained that graduates are not equipped with the right workplace skills and transferable skills,” the report reads. But it calls for the

involvement of students in internships to to tailor them to employers’ needs. It was revealed that on average, graduates take up to five years to secure a job after trying their luck in various trades. Beall called for an overhaul of the curriculum to include potential employers’ input of what they expect in the job to ensure universities give the required skills. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi is expected to give suggestions on how to improve the curriculum and enhance chances of graduates finding jobs.

Kenyans smoking 15billion cigarette sticks each year A worldwide fall in cigarette sales is expected to last until 2017 due to global political turmoil. But not for Africa and Middle East, experts from

research group Euromonitor International have warned. The threat of falling revenues loom seems to have spared Kenya and other African countries.

Kenyans smoke about 15 billion sticks every year, the Tobacco Atlas, a research article for the sector says. The uptake is equivalent to about 375 cigarettes for each citizen.

Given the local and global demand for the product, there are opportunities for tobacco farmers to boost earnings. Opportunities also exist for new farmers to branch into the sector. The country exports 5.5 billion worth of tobacco products every year. The sector also provides jobs to 40,000 contracted farmers, the highest number of farming jobs in East Africa. Health issues aside, the industry has garnered support from some business sector players. “Other than tax revenue, tobacco growing represents an important economic activity in Kenya,” Betty Maina, Kenya Association of Manufacturers Chief Executive Officer told a recent forum. “It cuts across the tobacco leaf processing and agro-processing industries in terms of source of employment and income,” she said.

Strike by pilots fuels Air France Sh56.5b losses

Last month’s Air France pilot’s strike will cost it about £393million (Sh56.5 billion) in lost revenue. Finance director Pierre-Francois Riolacci said it will suffer immediate impact of about 320350m euros, including loss of future business. Their passenger traffic has fallen by 15.9 per cent while bookings will fall in the next three months. It shares also fell two per cent at one point touching the lowest level in a year. The company has cut its profit target for 2014. Prime Minister Manuel Valls had warned that the two-week strike was creating real danger for the airline and the image of France. The France national airline was in dispute with pilots over plans to expand its budget airline, Transavia. The airline announced last month plans to double passenger numbers carried on the budget airline by 2017 and expand its operations outside France in order to compete with others airline like EasyJet. Pilots objected saying the move of staff to Transavia would erode existing contracts. The airline was forced to put the expansion on hold as they come held talks with the pilots.

DevastatING loss: Doctors attend to an Ebola patient. The World Bank says the epidemic poses serious threats to economic growth across the African continent.

Ebola threat to African economies, WB warns African economies are set to grow by five percent yearly in the coming two years but the Ebola crisis might pose serious threats to this growth if left uncontained. This is according to a new report by the World Bank which notes that if the virus continues to spread in the three worst-affected countries, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the economic impact would have a big blow on the neighboring countries also. World Bank Group President, Jim Yong

cityscape Kencom House Kencom House is a commercial building located in Nairobi’s Central Business District at the junction of Moi Avenue and City Hall Way. It is a wide structure with cream-coloured stone walls and a blocky design, which serves as the headquarters of the Kenya Commercial Bank and several governmental and nongovernmental organisations. In 2008, Symbion Group, an architectural firm was in charge of the building now completed refurbishment. This included the re-planning of basements and service areas, offices and lobbies in the building. Kencom House faces the Hilton and Ambassador hotels and is located next to a bus station that goes by the latter hotel’s name.

Kim, said the successful containment of Ebola in Nigeria and Senegal is good news for Africa as it is evidence that this is possible to contain the virus through firm policy response and working health system capacity. “With Ebola’s potential to inflict massive economic costs on Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone and the rest of their neighbors in West Africa, the international community must find ways to get past logistical roadblocks and bring in more doctors and trained

More often than not, people purchase land for settlement or farming. Property experts from real estate dealer, Pam Golding say that there are a number of things to note before buying a plot, the first of which is zoning. Zoning is the division of land into portions that will have varying restrictions on what can be built on each piece of property. “It is important to make sure that you are even allowed to build a house on that piece of vacant land before you start constructing on it,” says one Pam Golding agent. There are zoning laws that are implemented in most vacant land areas that govern what can and cannot be done with land. Essentially, these zoning laws are the reasons why factories are not allowed near private property or why a sewerage processing plant cannot be found right next to a

residential area. Pam Golding agents say that the second thing to note is access to utilities such as piping facilities for water, electricity lines for power and phone lines for communication. “If these are not available in the land you want to purchase then you will have to organize how the phone company and electricity company will assist you to bring this facilities close to your home,” they say. Carrying out a survey of the property comes third. In which case, the agents say that one must hire professional surveyors to “research your property and mark the exact property boundaries of your vacant land.” This, they explain, “helps you make precise evaluations determinations and plan out the dimensions of a house.”

infrastructure

medical staff, more hospital beds, and more health and development support to help stop Ebola in its tracks,” said Kim. The report recommends that Africa should expand its manufacturing base by boosting its business climate, macro-economic stability, reliable and affordable energy, lowering transport costs and investing in a more skilled labor force, which will benefit the economies.

Transporters urge State to build dual carriage highway Businesspeople transporting goods to Uganda and back have encouraged the government to partner with Uganda to construct a dual carriageway from Mombasa to Kampala. The proposed road will cover a distance of about 1,200 kilometres. Meshack Kipturgo, Managing Director of cargo company Siginon group, one of the major transporters using the route, has said this will help boost trade along what is known as the Northern Corridor. The Northern Corridor is a road network that covers close to 8,800 km across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. Together with other transporters, Kipturgo has

noted that this will reduce the high cost of transport and doing business in the region. Kipturgo, who happens to be the chairman of the Container Freight Station Association, said that the business community pays Sh5,800 per tonne transporting goods from Mombasa to Garissa, a distance of 550 kilometres. He states that the high costs is due to the poor state of the road as well as security concerns. “The government should prioritise construction of a super highway owing to the fact that Uganda is the biggest user of the port of Mombasa. It is our biggest market for transit cargo,” said Laban Onditi, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Vice Chairman.

Varsity ranking system alone not fix for poor performance HIGHER EDUCATION: A new study has revealed that individual performance in universities may not improve, even with the proposed ranking if students remain stressed out by a number of factors.

A fortnight ago, Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi asked the Commission for University Education to device a method to rank local universities in a bid to boost performance. However, a study published in the Merit Research Journal of Education and Review has revealed

that individual performance in universities may not improve, even with the proposed ranking if students remain stressed out by various social issues, among them the social media. The study identified that various social factors led to reduced sleep hours and which in turn affected

class work performance among the students. The study was conducted by a team of scholars, who surveyed 100 fourth-year students drawn from Egerton, Nairobi, Chuka, Meru, Kenyatta and Jomo Kenyatta universities. Their findings revealed that 56 per

cent of students spend their time on social media, drugs and stressing over social life both at personal and family levels leading to sleep deprival. Stress and anxiety related to little pocket money accounted for 54 per cent, relationships took 60 per cent while family squabbles swept up to

80.4 per cent of student worries. As a result, student sleep time is cut to between six and seven hours, as opposed to the recommended seven to eight hours a day. The study also identified that disrupted sleeping patterns led to two out of every five students skipping classes from fatigue.

online

In online learning, smaller classes are a safe bet

The number of students pursuing online studies is escalating by the day. Working students are preferring this mode of study due to its flexibility

as well as some free courses put on offer in other repositories. This can prompt one to sign up for a class with more students, considerably reducing their chances of doing well. Experts, however, prefer smaller classes, which they say are more effective in delivering online education than the big ones. 2U, an

online nursing programme CEO and co-founder Chip Paucek points out that in small classes, online students engage in real time discussions on-screen. Students loose track when the classes are too big in the screen, since they do not see the hope of engaging their lecturers directly. Most

online classes are global, thus accommodate as many student as 150 against the preferred 10 to 15. “Once you get more than 15 students there are too many faces on the screen. With smaller class sizes, students feel more engaged with the material and more connected to their professor and fellow

students,” says Paucek. In a smaller sized class, there is intimate relationship, which gives the student a personal touch to the content and the lecturer. University of Maryland business professor, Henry C. Lucas Jr also notes that it is challenging to have substantial interaction in big classes.

Employees are likely to clash during their daily interactions for various reasons. A good manager confronts any trouble arising in the office before it blows out of proportion. Office conflicts, if left unchecked can slow down a company’s progress. Below are ways a boss should resolve workplace conflict: lConvene a meeting with warring parties to establish the main cause of the problem and find a solution. Do no pin blame on one person. As the boss paint a neutral stand. lIn case they have forgotten, tell workmates to act professionally because people are different. lineofduty Raising swines may be dirty work but pays handsomely Pig husbandry is one of the filthiest farming choices. However, the lucrativeness of this mode of farming is attracting more investors. Michael Mwangi, who has more than six pigs in his Ongata Rongai farm advises beginners that pigs relate well in company pf their own. “If you cannot afford to keep more than one pig then team up with a friend who has the same the same interests, “he says. Mwangi also notes that cost sharing is a good way of keeping costs low, if those involved are committed. “Pig farming is demanding and calls for extreme commitment and patience in caring for the animals, “he goes on. He says there are days when the market may not be favourable but adds that the risk is worth it.

“The only secret to successful pig breeding is to seek and create a market before going into this business, “adds Mwangi. Having a market or committed clients ensures your business flows well allowing you to reap from your work. The best pigs to buy and raise are those at eight weeks old. They have weaned and are healthy enough to stand on their own. Four months after purchasing eight week old piglets, they are mature enough to be butchered or sold to slaughterhouses. Raising pigs for more than six months is wasting money which you may not be able to recover. On nutrition, Mwangi says that despite the assumption that pigs feed on filthy stuff, they require a proper diet for healthy pork.

adrenaline junkies have taken the sport off the snow, on to the tarmac. Much of the thrill of street luge comes from the high levels of speed involved in the sport. Riders lie on the wheeled luge in an aerodynamic manner. They are

then given a push from behind to make the luge move. Speeds can hit up to as high as 96 kilometres per hour and over. Since there is very little wind resistance, one might find themselves hurtling faster than that.

In this sport, the rider has to hold on the lunge on the side to steer it while using their feet for braking. Riders are usually subject to high levels of injury. With the body so close to the road surface, some of the most common injuries include dislocated shoulders, bumps, bruises and even concussions. Crashes with pedestrians or cars and wipe-outs are not rare either. These occur especially if the rider loses control around a curve, collides with another rider during a race, or encounters obstacles along the road. To lower the risk of injury, riders wear specialized safety gear like; leather suits lined with body armor to protect the skin, elbows and knees from road rash and cuts. Heavy-duty leather gloves are worn to protect the hands, and may have rubber pads on the fingers to help with pushing off. Again, due to the need of braking, shoes have to be heavy-duty as well, with extra rubber padding to hold up against heat and friction. Helmets equipped with a full-face mask have to be put on too, in order to lower the injury levels in case one digs their heads on the ground during a crash.

forecast

THURsday, octoBER 9, 2014

HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19

Don’t let another day go by without really paying homage to the people who’ve helped you grow along the way. Take a walk. Climb a tree or help a child build a tree house. Connect with your spiritual side that finds satisfaction in where you are now instead of always feeling a need to search for something bigger and better.

aquarius Jan 20 - Feb

When it comes to matters of love and romance, you may need to tone things down a bit, Aquarius. An aggressive approach now may drive your loved one further away from you instead of drawing him or her closer. Remember that love is a two-way street. Don’t just do things the way you’d like to do them.

pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20

You may find that your love is incredibly magnetic now, Pisces. All you need to do is be yourself and suddenly people flock your way. There are terrific opportunities for you to strengthen the bonds you have with the people you care about the most. Solidify your relationship with soft romantic words and actions.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19

Consider taking a more conservative approach to your actions today, Aries, as well as to the way you dress. Others may be rather put off by something that comes across as too flashy. Fashion is apt to be a significant concern for you now, which is fine.

taurus Apr 20 - May 20

Hang in there and you will find that things eventually come around your way. You may need to strengthen your internal sense of confidence, since it’s doubtful that you will get much support from interactions with the people around you.

gemini May 21 - Jun 21

It could be that you’re trying to communicate with someone in a matter regarding love and romance and it simply isn’t working. You’re apt to feel like you need a translator in order to get your message across.

cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22

This is a fantastic time for you for love and romance, Cancer, even if there’s a bit of coolness between you and the person you care about. It’s possible that there needs to be an element of distance now for you to really appreciate the good thing you have.

leo Jul 23 - Aug 22

It’s one thing to be a friend and it’s another to feed someone’s ego just to make him or her happy, Leo. Make sure that you aren’t telling someone lies just because you know that that is what he or she wants to hear. A true friend is someone who is honest at all times, even if it means that you may temporarily hurt that person’s feelings.

virgo Aug 23 -Sep 22

It’s critical that you not try to gain the love and appreciation of another by controlling their decisions, Virgo. It’s time to let the people around you set their own rules and boundaries. Give that special person space to decide what’s best, then you can take action accordingly.

libra Sep 23 - Oct 22

You might need to put on the brakes today when it comes to love and romance, Libra. Don’t think that this means you have to break off any sort relationship that’s in the works, but realize that you may need to take a more realistic approach to how you handle it.

scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21

Things should be going quite well for you today, Scorpio, and you will find that aspects of your life that may have felt disconnected in the past are finally slipping into place. Have faith that all your painstaking planning and organizing is finally going to pay off.

sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

Restriction and discipline might not be your forte, Sagittarius, but realize that this may be exactly the type of thing that you need the most. Try not to expend your energy in too many directions. Focus and channel your efforts into the things you consider the most important.

We smell malice in the failure of e-pay parking system Is surprising that the e-parking we expect to lead us out of woods leads us into embarrassing thickets in collecting parking fees in the city (Confusion mars City Hall switch h to e-parking October 1 2014).

After a test on the system two weeks ago along Haile Selassie Avenue parking slot, it was lauded for raking in more than twice the physical receipting. We are left wondering that key issues had not been sorted out

till today, the D-day. Come on! City Hall and Jambopay, the e-payment partners, knew today was the big day! Is it an engineered failure as a result of the ‘milk’ that will go dry for the parking staff?

Nairobi needs to net as much cash for infrastructural development. It will not meet its revenue collection target by abetting medieval methods of tax collection. Jambopay did not comment.

But we must be told what went wrong and a solution be found immediately, otherwise, we will be made to believe it is malice that is blocking the implementation of the cashless system. Ken Lagat-Roy Sambu

Lallana denies he forced Reds move Adam Lallana says he never wanted his move to Liverpool to get “messy” and was upset by suggestions he refused to play for Southampton in order to force the deal. A graduate of Saints’ fabled academy, the attacking midfielder played a key role in the club’s rise from League One doldrums back to top-flight. The 26-year-old captained the side to an eighth-placed Premier League finish last season. His performance

saw him make a 25 million UK pounds move to Liverpool. Given Liverpool’s history, and the chance to play Champions League football, it was an opportunity Lallana could not reject at this stage of his career. He is aware the move has left a sour taste with club supporters. “I never wanted anything to get messy, if that’s what happened,” Lallana said. “I don’t look a lot into it or read a lot into it. I always

wanted to leave on a good note and I’ll always have special memories of the fans, the players and the people involved in the club. Lallana is pleased to see Saints fly high. The move to thank fans in an advert placed in a local newspaper was overshadowed by claims he refused to play for Southampton again, accusations he describes as “completely false.” Lallana was one of a host of players to depart St Mary’s in the summer.

Ade could terminate Swallows contract

Former Gor Mahia FC forward Kevin ‘Ade’ Omondi could terminate his twoyear contract with South African top-tier side Moroka Swallows. The skillful forward is yet to get his work permit, several months after he officially joined the club and he says the club’s head coach, Zeca Marques has frustrated him, leaving him with no option but to leave. “I’ve really struggled since I came to South Africa and now feel that it’s time to go back home, things have not been what I initially expected,” Omondi said, “From the onset the coach clearly showed he wasn’t interested in me and therefore went ahead and signed other players.” Omondi also indicated that he has not been paid as per agreement. “Then there’s the issue of my salary. I’m yet to get my signing fee and only got half of my July salary. I have people who depend on me back home and things are getting thick.” “The only solution now is to break the contract and return back home and wait for the December transfer window,” he added. However, his agent, Basil Manousakis said he will engage the club to find an amicable solution. “There are signed contracts in place so this issue has to be solved in an amicable manner that will please both parties; the player, the club (Moroka Swallows) and his parent club (FISA Academy),” “I’m in communication with the both parties and hope to end this quagmire as soon as possible. I have given Moroka Swallows several options already and we have a final meeting scheduled before the end of the week,” he added.

Divock Origi has revealed that Liverpool wanted him to join this season but had to loan him back to Lille as part of the deal. The Reds sealed a Sh1.43billion deal for the highly-rated youngster shortly after he impressed at the World Cup in Brazil, but loaned him straight back to the Ligue 1 club. And Origi says he would have been happy to move to Anfield immediately, but that it was impossible under the terms of the agreement between the two clubs. “Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wanted me from the beginning but unfortunately he did not succeed. It was important that I remained at Lille for a year for my development” the Belgium international told Voetbal Primeur. “It was not my request to stay but Lille otherwise would not sell me. It’s not that I do not want to go to Liverpool. I have ambitions but it is an advantage that I am still here for a season, where I can continue to develop and play a lot. That’s the positive side of the story,” he added. This even comes as Rodgers demands more from Mario Balotelli as the Sh2.34billion striker struggles to fit in. Liverpool’s attacking threat under Rodgers has been based on electric pace and intelligent movement yet in the absence of the injured Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez’s (Balotelli) replacement has been unable to provide that focal point in the final third.

Origi went back to Lille for development after Reds’ deal

BACK AND FORTH: Belgian striker Divock Origi, who has Kenyan ancestry, says his deal with Liverpool required that he goes back to his former team, Lille, on loan for one year.

Sony Sugar ready to fight Leopards in rematch Sony Sugar FC Head Coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno says his club is ready to play AFC Leopards in the rematch of an aborted match that has now been slotted for October 16. Zico’s remarks comes after the Independent Disciplinary and Appeals Committee (IDAC) ordered that the return leg fixture be replayed after they dismissed an appeal by AFC Leopards on

technicality. The decision by IDAC thus upheld that of league’s Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee (IDCC), who had ordered for a replay at Awendo Green Stadium or Moi Stadium, Kisumu. “It could have been the greatest injustice if the them (Leopards) were not commanded to play us, all I can say as a team we are ready to play,” said Zico. Sony, had appealed to IDCC

after Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited awarded the match to AFC Leopards following the sugar millers’ failure to show up for the fixture. Leopards in turn appealed to the federation. FKF’s IDAC, said in its ruling made on Monday, “the appeal has failed on non-compliance with the rules and not on merit.” The match was originally scheduled for August 6. KPL moved the tie

from Awendo to Afraha over security concerns but Sony took issue with change of venue and declined to travel to Nakuru forcing the league body to award the tie to Leopards on a 2-0 result but IDAC intervened again. “My desire is that the privilege of home matches has to stand, if not there is no reason of having a home and away ties,” he (Zico) concluded.

Gatlin nomination a big problem, says the ‘Lord’ British politician and former track and field athlete Lord Coe has admitted having “big problems” with the nomination of Justin Gatlin for World Athlete of the Year. The sprinter, 32, who has served two doping bans, is one of 10 on a shortlist announced by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) last week. This summer Gatlin ran the fastest 100m and 200m by a man in his thirties. “What would you say if I said I felt comfortable about it? The only thing I would say is he is entitled to compete;

but I’m not particularly comfortable about it,” “I think you’d be surprised if I said I was sanguine about it - personally I have big problems with that.” The double-Olympic champion, who chaired London 2012’s organising committee and is the current chairman of the British Olympic Association, has never made any secret of his belief that cheats should be banned for life. But he said in London that he accepted “that particular train has left the station” and he realised lifetime bans would be unenforceable from a legal point of view.

Leading along the pack straight he was tracked by his compatriot Silas Kiplagat, the Commonwealth Games champion, who crossed the line in a world-leading and Diamond League record time of 3:27.64. “The mark puts Silas fourth on the world all-time list behind just El Guerrouj, Bernard Lagat and Noureddine Morceli, leapfrogging Kiprop, I see it won’t be long before the record is broken,” said Okeyo.

EPL planning season clashes abroad

divING ABROAD? An Arsenal player clashes with a Chelsea rival in an EPL clash. The league is toying with the idea of playing some matches in foreign soil.

The Premier League is to resurrect plans to play regular season matches in foreign soil. The idea of taking Premier League matches “on tour” around the globe was first mooted in 2008 and promoted as the “39th game.” It turned out to be a PR disaster and was rejected by supporters, Fifa and leaders of national associations around the world. The league eventually scrapped the idea as the 2010 chief executive Richard Scudamore insisted there were no plans to resurrect the “39th game.” But two months

ago, he indicated there was a softening of its stance. “The clubs wanted it then and they all would still probably want it now,” Scudamore said at the season launch. “It will happen at some point. Whether it is on my watch, who knows?” Club chairmen and chief executives met for the Premier League shareholders’ meeting in September over the matter. Envious eyes have been cast at NFL which has successfully held regular-season matches at Wembley Stadium since 2007. Pre-season tours to Asia, South Africa, Australia and

US have become increasingly eager to tap into the global market. When Man United played Real Madrid in Michigan this summer, a record football attendance for the United States of 109,318 filled the stadium. EPL clubs may also feel they are missing out on further financial windfalls as Europe’s major clubs announce lucrative Gulf friendlies during winter breaks. AC Milan will play Real Madrid at the Dubai Football Challenge on Dec 30, before Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid take on PSG in Qatar on January 2.

Hazard is Chelsea’s McIlroy turns focus on Augusta Messi, says Fabregas Cesc Fabregas believes Eden Hazard plays a similar role to Chelsea striker Lionel Messi does for Barcelona. Fabregas returned to England after a three-year spell at boyhood club Barca. He joined the Blues in a Sh4.82billion deal and has made immediate impact at Stamford Bridge. After featuring in all of his new team’s seven Premier League games, Fabregas believes Hazard will be a key player in their title hunt this season. “He is the link between midfield and attack for us; he is our Messi

because he makes the difference,” the Spaniard said “We have a young team but we are positive about the future.” Much has been made of the club Fabregas joined on his return to England, considering his connection with Arsenal. But the 27-year-old says a faceto-face talk with Blues boss Jose Mourinho made the decision easy for him, despite having three offers in England. “I’ve always played in clubs where I wanted to play. At the end of last season, I saw Chelsea as the best option,” Fabregas says.

I’m ready: Rory McIlory says he is ready to “embrace the pressure” to achieve the goal of completing a career Grand Slam at neat year’s Masters at Augusta.

Rory McIlroy says he will “embrace the pressure” in his attempt to complete the career Grand Slam at next year’s Masters at Augusta. McIlroy’s Open Championship triumph at Hoylake secured him the third leg of the career Slam as he earned a second US PGA title three weeks later. “I know there is going to be a lot of hype going into Augusta,” McIlroy, 25, said. “The spotlight will be firmly focused on me but I won’t mind.” McIlroy led the 2011 Masters by four shots heading into the final round but a closing 80 saw him tumble down the leader

board. He won the US Open two months later before lifting the 2012 US PGA title. Speaking after opening a new support centre for children with cancer in County Down, McIlroy says he has thought of victory at Augusta next April. “It is just about preparing properly and doing the right things and making sure when I get to Augusta in April that everything is ready to go,” McIlroy said. “If that was to happen, there could be even more hype going into the US Open and trying to hold all four (majors) at the same time.
