Anglo-Leasing loot recovery in top gear

The decade-long hunt for architects of the Anglo-Leasing scandal in which Kenyan tax payers lost billions of shillings may be concluded soon. This is after the Government confirmed it has evidence on the looters. Attorney General Githu Muigai said the Government knows the culprits behind the scam and has handed over the files to Swiss authorities where the cash is stashed. “Both Kenyan and Swiss authorities know with a lot of certainty who did what, when and where,” he said. Anglo-Leasing loot recovery starts From Page 1 But he declined to reveal the names of the looting engineers. “Specific details of the evidence are the responsibility of the commission,” he said referring to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). In mid-October, EACC Chairman Mumo Matemo said about 10 people are being investigated and will stand trial over the scam. “For now, let us not share any

names but the number is the region of 10 people,” he then told a news conference at his Integrity House office. “They are Kenyans and perhaps some non-Kenyans. But they are people who are subject to the law in Kenya,” he said. A host of Cabinet ministers in retired president Mwai Kibaki’s administration have been linked to the scandal involving 18 contentious Government contracts

worth about Sh55 billion which were awarded between 1997 and 2003. Businessman Deepak Kamani, who is associated with some of the companies, was questioned by EACC investigators a few months ago. His arrest followed renewed interest in the investigations after the Government was condemned after an Executive order that authorised payment of Sh1.4 billion to a

company associated with the scam. But there appears to be hope that the Government will recover the funds. Prof Muigai said the cash which has been confirmed to be in bank accounts in the European country will be returned to Kenya. “I was able to confirm from the Swiss authorities that Kenyan money is being held in Switzerland and that money will be repatriated to Kenya,” he said.

But he declined to divulge details of the amount. “How much it is, who took it there, when it will come back… That is still working progress,” he said. Swiss Ambassador to Kenya Jacques Pitteloud called for patience, saying cases under investigations are “very complex.” “You have to realise that these are complicated economic investigations that need a very long time,” he said.

Orthodox new group to wage war on Ku Klux Klan A new group is enrolling new members to oppose the white supremacy Ku Klux Klan in US. John Abarr, the leader of Rocky Mountain Knights in Montana, says the movement does not base recruitment on race, religion or sexual orientation. He says it advocates for peace instead of hatred. The new group that is based in Montana will work to reverse KKK white supremacy fundamentals. Abarr told the Great Falls Tribune Rocky Mountain that the Knights will shun past practises of KKK whose racism rites were characterised by burning of crosses and lynching. “KKK is for a strong America. White supremacy is the old Klan. This is the new Klan,” he said. But Rocky Mountain Knights will retain robes and hoods, and will partake of the KKK secret rituals. Abaarr said his long history in the sect advancing white supremacy could not deter him from taking a U-turn on the group’s fundamentals. He has decided to embrace African– Americans, who KKK has scorned all along. Abarr said he is working with the AfricanAmerican National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP). He said NAACP is a “really good organisation” for whom he is planning for a peace summit next year. Members of KKK were estimated to be between 5,000 and 8,000 as at 2012. Abarr could not divulge the number of members of his group, which critics have said he is using to advance a political career.

One man claims he is launching a new KKK that is open to diversity. But the hoods (pictured) will be compulsory. The NAACP and Ku Klux Klan have been in fundamentally rivalry for more than a century. A Ku Klux Klan rally in Memphis

US asks Kenya to extradite 2 Akasha sons for drugs trial

The US government has asked Kenya to extradite two sons of slain drug baron Ibrahim Akasha to stand trial for alleged trafficking in narcotics. Baktash Akasha Abdalla and Ibrahim Akasha Abdalla face possible extradition alongside two other suspects, Vijaygiri Anandgiri Goswani and Kulam Hussein. The four were arrested in Mombasa over the weekend.

State Counsel Alexander Muteti told a Mombasa court on Tuesday the Director of Public Prosecutions received notice on November 10 asking Kenya to execute a provisional arrest of the four for purposes of extradition. “We have been served with notices through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to enforce the

arrest of four individuals to stand trial in America,” he told the court. He said the four are under an Interpol Red Notice for allegedly engaging in narcotics trade. But the suspects’ lawyers, Cliff Ombeta and Gikandi Ngibuini, opposed allegations that their clients are on an Interpol watch list. They asked the State to produce a copy of the notice in court as proof

State now suspends churches’ registration

Kenya boasts the second-highest level of Internet freedom in Africa Kenya has the second-highest level of Internet freedom in Africa, states a Human Rights Report that covered various countries across the continent. According to Freedom House, a US-based organization that conducts research on political freedom and human rights, Kenya, South Africa, the United States, Japan, Germany and Italy are the freest countries around the world when it comes to internet use. In fact, there are no filtering systems nor administrative censorship facilities that stop the Kenyan public from accessing content on the web. Sudan and Ethiopia have the least internet freedom in Africa. In their suffering, they are joined by China,

Iran, Cuba and Saudi Arabia, among others. Uganda, Rwanda, Angola, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Egypt have their internet access partly regulated by their governments. Like Brazil, Russia, India and Mexico, their internet freedom is limited. Kenya, however, appears to be well off. “Despite this increase in access and usage (of the internet), there are still major gaps that exist,” says Kenya Internet Governance Steering Committee Chairperson, Ms. Alice Munyua. She adds that the reasons for this include a lack of reliable electricity, high operation and maintenance costs of infrastructure, poor security against vandalism, as well as high spectrum and license fees.

Nairobi County Government workers call off strike

Nairobi County headquarters.

The Nairobi County Government workers have now suspended a strike that was planned to start today until next week to give city hall time to fulfil a new promise to pay them within seven days. In the deal reached yesterday, the workers union leader Benson Oliang’a warned that members will not listen to anything else if they are not paid as was agreed. “We are giving this management a chance and

a test so that they can make sure that they fulfill what they have promised. As such, we have suspended the strike until next week Thursday to see if they will keep their promises,” he said. The resolution was announced last evening after an agreement with county secretary Lillian Ndegwa to have the workers’ arrears paid. She stated that the first batch of the Sh265 million debt will be paid on Today while the remaining sum will be

released by Wednesday next week. She explained that delays in getting money released from the national government had occasioned the arrears. “We were late in paying salaries because of the way our revenues come in and also because of the delays that we had from the national government,” she said. The two parties agreed to have all the workers’ outstanding arrears paid by end of December 2014.

Cactus saving cattle from severe drought Cacti have gotten a pretty bad wrap over the years. However, the prickly food is now emerging as a solution to feeding livestock during seasonal droughts. Animal nutritionist, John Kang’ara and Agronomist, Josiah Gitari at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) say the prickly pear or rather known as paddle cacti serves as an excellent source of water and nutrition in harsh conditions. They have discovered that a variety of cacti known as Opuntia, remains green and succulent, contains about 90 per cent moisture, and can be easily digested. Presenting their findings at the ‘Pastoralism and Climate Change Adaptation in Africa conference’, the scientists said: “Despite its fodder potential,

Poppa Don’s Afro Lyrics, hit or miss?

Poppa Don is a self-confessed Afro-lyricist, who raps in English, Dholuo and Kiswahili. The artiste is in the Homeboyz top seven jump-off freshmen list. He is best known for the song Tunazidi Kuwa, in which he collaborated with Odinareh Bingwa. Is he worth all the hype?

OMG

Who exactly is Poppa Don? I am an empowered youth who is a critical thinker that seeks to transform and improve the quality of life for all humankind. I express my music through afrolyricism in different languages creating a unique cultural blend. Where do you get inspiration for your music? My inspiration in music stems from my experiences as well as those of others. I’m also inspired by the wide array of genres that I was exposed to while growing up. Music for me is a passion, it’s an innate relationship as well. Who do you look up to in the industry? I look up to the generation that pioneered what is now the music industry, in the times when the entertainment business was not a legitimately paying outfit like it is now. Those are the people we should all look up to as entertainers. They are many and I would not like to name names!

What are some of the challenges you faced while starting out? I’ve been a victim of selective exposure when mass media, radio & TV decide to push a selected group of artistes to introduce to people. I also did not know how to make my art into an income generating

venture. Which artistes have you worked with and would like to work with? So far I’ve worked with rappers Yung Haze, Shukid, Cashy, & Singer Mishu. I have other projects with other artistes who are well established in the game but I

Is Jay Z and Beyonce expecting a second child? Rumour has it that Jay Z and Beyonce are expecting their second child. The rumour started when Jay Z was performing in Paris and he switched the lyrics to his song Beach is Better from “I replace it with another one” to

“pregnant with another one.” Switching those key lyrics might have undoubtedly landed Jay Z in trouble because he let slip crucial information. If they are expecting, then Blue Ivy who is now 2½ year-old will be a big sister soon.

cannot mention names until it has matured. But it includes collaborations with other East African artistes. What are you greatest achievements and regrets so far? Pursuing my passion against all odds and actually translating that passion

into an income generating business. I regret not pursuing my passion earlier on in life. What is next for Poppa Don? I have what I call the ‘Martial plan”. The plan involves cementing and building my brand to ensure people always remember me.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Five years from now, it will be impossible to talk about the African entertainment platforms without mentioning Poppa Don. Meaning the name Poppa Don will be speaking itself without needing any introduction!

Tips for improving your home

D

efining your various home spaces with wall papers can turn them into attractive and welcoming places. Wall papers add warmth to the look of the home with variety of themes, texture that are available in many styles to suite your desire. They give you the power to control the mood of every space. You can decorate a bedroom with flowery and romantic colours and images with ease, without having to go for an artist to do the images. Children spaces have a variety need to be customized to make them comfortable and interesting. It is a cost-effective way of changing these rooms to suite the children without the hand of an expert. The available variety allows you to create drama. Clashing the wall paper colour or patterns with the general home décor gives a new angle to the looks of space. For instance, using turquoise will seem to cool highly energising shades like red. But where no clash is required, a harmonious transition from the walls to the general décor gives that unifying effect.

High human traffic rooms are prone to harbour stains and scratches. With time the paint on these surfaces has to be redone. Unlike paints, which fade with due to constant scrubbing while cleaning, wall papers relatively maintain their shade for long. A thin coating on the wall papers keeps dents and stains at bay. High quality wall papers last long. They need not be replaces regularly unless you want to change the theme of the space. This saves on the costs of painting the walls from time to time. Colour lovers may want to constantly change the colour of the look of their home. But painting may be irritating because of the pungent smell and the expertise required in the mixing and application. Replacement can be done in bits and at your desire without technical skills. Some stubborn stains and other blemishes can be perfectly concealed. If you are in the mood to improve your home while remaining relatively funky, wall paper would be a good place to start.

wall paper How to arrest and expel the repugnant fresh paint odour A newly painted room can be irritating to spend time in and can at times bring about respiratory issues such as asthma. If you must use oil-based paint because of their glossy finish, then use these methods to deodorise your room and arrest the repulsive smell. During mixing of paint ingredients, adding vinegar significantly reduces the smell. It may not get rid of it completely but it can be reduced to tolerable levels. Fanning and opening

windows will accelerate the expulsion of the smell besides drying off the paint. This, therefore, calls for leaving doors and other ventilators open. Jack’s Paint and Hardware, a paint supplier, says sliced onions and lemons can be placed in bowls at the various paints in the house. Onions may also be irritating to the eyes and nose, but they vanish faster unlike the reluctant paint odour. The slices must be discarded after a while. Burning candles also ‘eat’

the paint fumes. Placing them on the floor for about four to five hours is enough to leave the room smelling fresh. They should, however, not be placed close to the walls or ceiling because of their soot, which can stain the surfaces. Crushing and heating charcoal can also help expel the smell. Activated charcoal is available in hardware and paint outlets. Using hot charcoal is hazardous due to its potential for causing carbon dioxide poisoning.

Placing vinegar in bowls in the various parts of the room can also help seize the roaming paint fumes. Water may not be an efficient deodorant, but it can complement onions to fasten the process of cleansing. Baking soda is another easy way of expelling the repugnant smell. Sprinkling the powder on the carpet will not only foil the paint fumes, but also remove odours that may be in the carpet due to dampness.

In general, it could be that you have a hard time understanding people who are egotistical and don’t participate in activities with others. Today you could try looking at them as if they had something to teach you - the value of living a bit more for yourself and less for others.

Today could be rather constraining, Libra. Despite your great aspirations, today will be marked by the need to take care of the small problems that arise in everyday life. In other words, just what you love. That said, being more down to Earth or in contact with the realities of the world can never do anything but good for you.

This would be an ideal day to be more aware of that fact. It isn’t that you’re going to have health problems. Rather, the planets are positioned in the middle of abundant activity, suggesting that you’d be wise to take care of your body - your greatest asset.

sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

Today might be a little rough for you, Sagittarius. It’s as if reality were waiting to trip you up. Nothing about you is realistic. If you’re still a bit childish or irresponsible, today may be rather hard on you. It’s nothing serious, so don’t worry. However, if you feel as though your back is to the wall, don’t react.

Dear passengers: Support ‘arrive alive’ motto during festive season

Although the rising number of road accidents has often been blamed on Government agencies, it is the travellers duty to ensure their safety. Even as the National Transport and Safety Authority records significant drop in the number of accidents and deaths, public input is key as the end-year festivities

approach (Transport regulator figures show drop in road accidents November 11, 2014). Police and NTSA officials cannot be everywhere. The public mingle with the crew as they speed, drive while drunk, carry excess passengers and bribe their way out of arrest. Do not allow to be the end-year

sacrificial lamb whose blood must stain the roads red. Reporting the malpractices to higher authorities will help net those breaking the law. Do not allow to be next year’s data of those who died on the road due to recklessness among matatu and bus crew. Arrive alive is a statement often

taken lightly yet it holds a lot for you and your kin. Blaming police and NTSA will continue but by then you will be long gone. There is no justification for losing even one life that could have otherwise been saved. It has been established that more than 85 per cent of accidents are caused by human error.

Transporters must also ensure vehicles are in good condition. The PSVs should be fitted with the necessary safety devices. Loss of life and damage to investment will affect businesses next year. Eat slowly and small so that you can do it for longer.

Fellaini claims Moyes made him scapegoat

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini says he felt like he was a made a scapegoat for the club’s struggles under David Moyes. Fellaini was Moyes’ only signing of the 2013 summer transfer window for Sh4.1billion from Everton. Moyes, appointed in May 2013, was sacked after less than a year in charge, with United seventh in the Premier League table. Asked if felt he was a made scapegoat, Fellaini said: “Yes, a little bit.” The 26-year-old said: “That is a difficult question. It is difficult to answer that.”

Fellaini finished his debut season at United, which was hampered by a series of injuries, with 21 appearances. Some United fans turned on Fellaini after it was announced, one month after his arrival at Old Trafford, that he faced seven weeks on the sidelines with a wrist problem. Former striker Michael Owen claimed Moyes would have signed Everton’s Ross Barkley instead of Fellaini. United finished last season in seventh spot, 22 points behind champions Manchester City. In addition to failing

to qualify for European competition for the first time in 25 years, they were knocked out of FA Cup at the third round stage by Swansea and lost to Sunderland in the semi-final of the League Cup. But despite a difficult start to his Untied career, Fellaini insists he never lost confidence. The Belgium international added: “I didn’t lose faith in myself. “My family helped me through it. I was also in the national team for Belgium at the World Cup and I played well and the team also played well.

Referee angers police in Butali Warriors clash draw The Kenya Police hockey club coach has called for competent officiating in the national hockey league so as to boost the game. Ken Kaunda’s remarks comes after the defending champions cried foul in their tie against Butali Sugar Warriors. The match ended 3-3 though the law enforcers feel they were denied clear victory. Kenya Hockey Union

chairman Nashon Randiek returned to the field after a year and half in the sidelines. Controversy erupted when, with the game tied at 2-2, police striker Moses Cheplaiti scored. Randiek ruled the goal out citing an infringement on a member of the Warriors squad as fellow umpire Tony Fernandes gave the goal. Police technical bench were

angered by the decision. “He ruined a good game between two top sides with some strange decisions,” said Kaunda. “We simply call for fairness when it comes to officiating,” he said. Green Sharks lead the table with 11 points followed by police with 10 as Warriors occupy third spot with eight points.

Shabana FC officials: Neeraj Kalaiya (Treasurer), Jared Nivaton (Chairman) and Peter Omwando (Secretary General). The club is aiming at signing a coach before next season.

Shabana to hire coach, Selebwa to move to technical position Kisii based Shabana FC will undergo radical changes in preparedness for the coming season after their controversial return to the top flight football. Club chairman Jared Nivaton says of immediate concern is to sign 10

experienced players with premier league pedigree to form the spine of the team. “After celebrations we need to get back to work, to survive in the premier league you got to have done quality signings and give the player’s

time to gel,” he said. “We also in the process of working on avenues and identifying possible sponsors for the coming season, we hope to conclude matters soon enough,” he said. A source from within the club says that head coach Gilbert Selebwa

will be the technical director in the coming season with a new coach expected to be signed soon. “I cannot disclose whether the new coach will be Kenyan or not, Selebwa is currently involved in signing new players,” said the source.

Reed outburst puts spotlight on golf’s disciplinary code US Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed will be disciplined for his foul-mouthed homophobic outburst that followed three-putting in China last week. As the 25-year-old has acknowledged, it is quite right that he is punished. There should be no place for this kind of behaviour in the game of golf. As playing partner Graeme McDowell took a two-shot lead, the controversial American was picked up by microphones beside the first green cursing in language that could be construed as homophobic. Although the PGA Tour refuses to give details on sanctions against its players, Reed’s punishment is likely to be a substantial five-figure fine after he could be clearly heard on a TV feed uttering a torrent of F-word lines. He had just dropped a shot at the first hole, which he played as his 10th, and while he finished only four shots behind McDowell after a 71, he faces stern action. The tour said it would “deal with a matter internally” after indicating Reed had breached its rules on appropriate conduct.

Reed will no doubt be hit with a fine and it was even suggested in some quarters that he might receive a short ban. Though no one knows for how long. Thanks to a PGA Tour policy that some people within the game believe does

golf a huge disservice, these questions will never be publicly answered. Punishments are not publicised other than in instances where a player tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Referees on FKF’s neck over pay Some of the assistant referees and referees officiating this year’s GOtv Shield Cup have raised concerns over defaulted payments. Up to six matches worth of their services this season are unpaid, they claim. The referees have pointed out to a breach of contract. They were in agreement with the Federation that the central referees would be paid a total of 10,000 while their assistants get 8,000. On the contrary, the federation has paid 6,000 to the central referees and 4,000 to the assistants. The outraged referees demanded that their outstanding balances be settled before the onset of the finals on the 15th of November this Saturday in Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium. In reaction to the claims, chairperson of the Leagues and Competitions Committee Doris Petra

confirmed that the federation has debts to clear with the referees and apologised for the federation not being able to live up to their agreements confirming that they would honour their part of the bargain before the finals set for the weekend. “The federation surely owes the referees some money and we are working on it come the finals this weekend. We have had a challenge revising our 2013 budget owing to the entry of more teams in the league this season,” she concluded. This weekend’s finals will witness the tussle between the newly promoted side Posta Rangers, who outstaged Western Kenya sugar in penalty shoot-outs and Sofapaka who thrashed AFC Leopards to earn the place. The winner of the title will represent Kenya in the CAF confederation cup in 2015.

Rudisha focus on Rio 2016 Olympics glory World 800m champion David Rudisha is looking forward to next year’s World Championships in Beijing and 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The 26 year old was last Friday awarded the “Best Male Athlete of London 2012” at the inaugural Anoc Gala Awards in Bangkok, Thailand. Rudisha was lifted the award after winning a gold medal and setting a new world record time of 1:40.91. This is the first time any athlete had run 800m under

glory dream: Rudisha has set sights on glory days ahead at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

1:41. Rudisha’s record breaking pace forced all competitors to register their season’s bests. “I have not I good season I must admit, but I am working towards that,” said Rudisha. “I’ve been going up and down with injury and just coming back. “I’m really looking forward and seeing how my rehabilitation will go because that is the main thing. But I’m still focused to run a good and fast time.”

Sheffield player convicted of Southampton gunning rape to join club in training for EPL top six finish Sheffield United will allow convicted rapist Ched Evans to train with them following their former player’s release from prison. The 25-year-old was freed last month after serving half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19 year-old woman in a hotel room in 2011. There has been controversy over whether he should resume his football career. The League One club continues to discuss any long-term decision on the Welsh international. He will train with the club for the first time since his release later this

week, a move that will be seen by many as the first step towards a possible return. It is also understood the club contacted the football authorities to notify them that they wanted the player to train with them. Evans, who maintains his innocence, released a video statement on his personal website last month, in which he said he wanted to play again. “It is a rare and extraordinary privilege to be permitted to play professional football. It is my hope that I will be able to return,” he said. “If that is possible then I will do

so with humility having learned a very painful lesson. “I would like a second chance but I know not everyone would agree.” Evans claims the sex was “consensual in nature and not rape” and did not offer any apology to his victim. Evans walked out of Wymott prison in October and straight into a national debate over his future. Almost 157,000 people have signed a petition urging Sheffield United not to take the player back after the club chose not to renew his contract following his conviction. His deal expired during his incarceration.

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama says the club’s goal is to finish in the top six. “We are not over-performing.. our aim is to fight hard to top our performance. We want to bag as many points as possible to see us improve on our last season’s performance. That would be a plus for us,” he said. Manager Ronald Koeman has been

inspirational to the team even after the departure of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren. Popular boss Mauricio Pochettino also left for Tottenham. In 10 Premier League games, Wanyama has netted three goals and has hailed Koeman for motivating all players.

Skiing violinist to serve four year ban Violinist Vanessa-Mae has been banned for four years for violations during her qualification for the Sochi Winter Olympics. An International Ski Federation (FIS) hearing panel ruled that results of four giant slalom races were manipulated in January in Slovenia. FIS details several rule-breaking incidents that rigged results to help Vanessa-Mae falsely improve her results.

Without the cheating, VanessaMae “would not have achieved the necessary FIS point performance level to be eligible to participate in the Olympic Winter Games.” In Sochi, the celebrity musician raced for Thailand as Vanessa Vanakorn, using the last name of her Thai father. She finished last of 67 racers in the two-run giant slalom. FIS also banned five other officials

for between one and two years for cheating. In July, Four Slovenian ski officials were suspended for allegedly rigging the results of pop violinist Vanessa-Mae to help her qualify for the Winter Olympics. To earn enough points to be eligible for the games in February, she had to compete in official races in Sweden, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The Kenya Premier League 2014 Season in Numbers

1

Although they were the second highest scorers in the league behind Sofapaka, champions Gor Mahia had only one name, Danny Sserunkuma, in the league’s top 10 goal scorers. The Ugandan was also the only non-Kenyan in the top 10. Sofapaka took four slots, Thika United, Tusker and Sony Sugar had two each while Muhoroni Youth and Ulinzi Stars had one apiece. This was only Gor Mahia’s second Premier League title after the revamping of the topflight division in 2003. Nakuru All Stars managed only three wins all season long as they got relegated back to the National Super League as early as October last month. They shocked Gor Mahia 2-0 in Nakuru where they also slaughtered KRA 1-0 while replicating a similar score line win at Thika United. City Stars won one more game than the Top Fry sponsored team while Bandari registered 5 wins. Ulinzi lost only 3 games all season. They were beaten 1-2 away to Tusker FC in March with Gor Mahia replicating that scoreline at Afraha Stadium. Their only other loss was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of

KCB at Nyayo Stadium in September, John Macharia with the only goal in the match. Champions Gor Mahia lost four games while Sofapaka and Tusker lost five times each. Based on positions from last season, Ulinzi Stars and Chemelil Sugar made the highest leap with both teams moving up four places to finish fourth and fifth respectively having finished 8th and 9th last season. KCB made the biggest dropped falling from position four last season to 14 this season followed by Bandari who finished 13th this season having finished 6th in 2013. Only five clubs assumed at least the bottom two positions at some point in the season. AFC Leopards were second from bottom on matchday four, Muhoroni Youth were bottom after the first two matchdays, KCB were in the bottom two between matchday five and 22, City Stars during the last 7 matchdays of the season while Nakuru All Stars were rooted to the bottom two from the start of the season to the finish. Number of goals scored in the highest scoring matches on the final day. AFC Leopards beat Bandari 3-2 in Mombasa while KCB had a similar margin win over relegated

Nakuru All Stars at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. The longest winning streak in the league which was recorded by Gor Mahia. Having failed to win in four consecutive matches which culminated in a 1-2 loss away to Bandari, K’Ogalo went on a 6-game winning splash with KCB, Ulinzi, Muhoroni Youth, Sony Sugar, Sofapaka and Chemelil all falling by the way side before AFC Leopards grind them to a halt with a 3-1 derby win. Only six teams managed to assume the number one position during the season. Besides Gor Mahia who featured on 16 matchdays, Tusker had the second highest number featuring 8 times, Sony Sugar featured twice while Sofapaka, Chemelil and Western Stima all featured once. Gor Mahia registered 7 more wins than their archrivals AFC Leopards this season having won only three more games the season before. There were two new entrants to the coveted Top 8 bracket with Muhoroni Youth and Chemelil Sugar replacing KCB and Bandari who dropped out. Nine teams in the KPL 2014 season finished with a – (negative) goal difference. Nakuru All Stars led the log on -25 followed by KRA on -18, Nairobi City Stars had -17, KCB had -9 while Western Stima finishes in the top five with -7. KRA finished with the longest losing streak in the league. Having started the season strongly with victories against the likes of AFC Leopards, Thika United and two-leg wins over Nairobi City Stars, Ken Kenyatta’s side lost all their season ending 10 games conceding 22 goals and scoring only six. This was the 11th season of the Kenya Premier League since it began in 2003 and the 52st season of top division football in Kenya since 1963. Chemelil Sugar and Ulinzi had the joint longest unbeaten run in the league. In a season that saw Chemelil assume the top position on matchday 5, the sugar millers’ rearguard was impregnable for the first 12 matches of the season. Eventual champions, Gor Mahia brought that run to a debilitating end on May 22nd with Rama Salim heading the only goal of the match in a 1-0 win for the then Bobby Williamson side. Ulinzi went unbeaten for 12 matches between 23rd April and August 13th while

Sofapaka who after losing 2-0 against Thika United in August 6th finished the rest of the season with a 10-game unbeaten run. Nakuru All Stars scored the least number of goals during the season at 13 followed by City Stars who could only find the back of the net 18 times. Gor Mahia’s triumph is the 14th time they have won the league, a new record. It is also the first time they have won the league back-to-back since the 90s where they won it three times on the trot, 1983, 84 and 85. AFC Leopards who last won the title in 1998 are now one behind in 13, three ahead of Tusker in 10. The joint high number of draws recorded in the competition this season with Ulinzi Stars and Bandari sharing that number Gor Mahia’s Danny Sserunkuma claimed the golden boot award after emerging topscorer with 16 goals. The Ugandan scored only one goal less than the 17 Jacob Kelli scored for KCB last season. Gor Mahia’s Maurice Ochieng remains the league’s all-time top scorer in a single season having bagged 26 goals during the 1976 season. Chemelil Sugar had the tightest defence conceding only 16 goals, 4 less than Ulinzi who allowed 20 while champions Gor Mahia and Sony Sugar finished third and fourth respectively with their defences sliced open on 21 occasions. Champions Gor Mahia won the league having secured 17 wins, one ahead of runners-up Sofapaka. In fact, the last four KPL titles have been won by a team that registers 17 wins save for Gor who in spite of achieving that, they failed to beat Tusker to the 2012 title having lost a game more. Nakuru All Stars got relegated having accumulated only 17 points, the least of any teams in recent memory. The total number of goals that were scored on the final day of the season Beaten 3-0 by Gor Mahia in the final game of the season, KRA alias Ushuru FC had the leakiest defence soaking in 40 goals while scoring only 22 as they finished with the second worst goal difference. Champions Gor Mahia scored 43 goals on their way to retaining their KPL title. This is the second most goals scored by a league champion since 2008 when Mathare netted 47 times to win the trophy. Last season, Gor scored only 32 goals Sofapaka were the highest scorers in the league with 49

goals, Enock Agwanda scoring 11 of those, followed by defender Ekaliana Ndolo who scored 9 while Fiston Razak and veteran marksman John Baraza both netted on 7 occasions. Gor Mahia won the league after amassing 60 points out of a possible 90. They continued with the trend of the previous three seasons where 60 has been the magic number for winning the league. Gor won the title last season on 60 and so did Tusker the year before. The previous three had been won on 58, and twice on 59 by Tusker, Ulinzi Stars and Sofapaka in 2011, 2010 and 2009 respectively. Mathare’s 63-point triumph in 2008 remains the benchmark over the past five years.

104 The total number of days that KPL matches were played. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday were the most popular while five matches were played on a Thursday and only once on a Monday when Bandari lost 0-1 to Chemelil in Mombasa. No match was played on a Tuesday.

238 The total number of matches played. There still remains an impasse over the Tusker versus Muhoroni Youth and Sony Sugar versus AFC Leopards matches which haven’t been played for various reasons. If they get played, the total will rise to the usual 16-team number of 240. If Football Kenya Federation pushes on with the idea of raising the number of teams in the topflight to 18, that would push the number to 288. 451 The total number of goals scored all season at a ratio of 1.89 goals per game. This is an improvement on the 432 scored last season but 7 goals less than the 458 scored in the 2012 season. The 2011 season saw 488 goals scored which remains the highest for at least the last five years. 500,000 Half a million shillings

seems to be Football Kenya Federation’s benchmark fine for crowd trouble. AFC Leopards were slapped with KShs. 500,000 fine for fan trouble in their 2-0 loss against Thika United while Gor Mahia had to fork out the same amount after their fans went berserk in Machakos against Sofapaka who were fined Kshs. 300,000 for failing to provide adequate security.
