Four killed, 20 arrested in Coast gang chaos Four people were last evening killed in Mombasa after armed youths attacked residents of Kisauni in retaliation of the raids police carried out on two mosques in the area.

According to police, the gang of between 10 to 15 descended on Kisauni residents with crude weapons at about 7 pm and started stabbing those in sight as they shouted “Allahu Akbar� (God is the greatest).

Kisauni police boss Richard Ngatia said they arrested more than 20 youths following the attacks, who will be arraigned in court later today.

The incident came hours after police staged daring raids on Masjid Musa and Sakina mosques, where they

recovered eight grenades, a pistol with six bullets, knives and DVDs said to contain jihad teachings.

One of the youth in the mosques was shot dead after he allegedly tried to hurl a grenade at the officers. Of the 251 who were arrested there, 24 had come from

Somalia, where they had joined the terror group for a fight against the Government, police said.

Police say they had intelligence the group was being radicalised before they staged the raid. The recovered weapons which also included knives.

Human body parts mailers on the run

Two Americans arrested for trying to send human body parts from Thailand to the US have fled from Bangkok, police have said.

Ryan Edward McPherson and Daniel Jamon Tanner packaged human body parts, including a head, a foot sliced into three, a heart and a skin sheet with tattoo markings.

The duo told the police they wanted to surprise their friends back home with the parcel.

Police Lieutenant General Ruangsak Jaritake told reporters that DHL shipping officers in Bangkok recovered the parts after scanning the parcel destined for Las Vegas.

“X-rays showed there were contents similar to human body parts. From our investigation of three parcels we found human body parts in five plastic containers,” said Jaritake.

The parts preserved in formaldehyde, were disguise as children toys, the officer said.

“The packages were marked ‘children’s toys’ but x-rays showed they were not children’s toys,” he said.

The two suspects fled Thailand through a checkpoint in the eastern part of the country.

The lieutenant said the sheet of skin with tattoo markings and heart, which had stab marks belonged to an adult, while the sliced foot was of an infant.

Report: Global terror attack deaths on the rise The number of deaths from terrorism increased by 61 percent between 2012 and 2013, a study into international terrorism says.

There were nearly 10,000 terrorist attacks in 2013, a 44 percent increase from the previous year, the Global Terrorism Index 2014 report added.

The report said militant groups Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and the Taliban were behind most of the deaths.

Iraq was the country most affected by terrorism, the report said.

The report by the Institute for Economics and Peace says that nearly 18,000 people died from terrorist attacks in 2013.

“Not only is the intensity of terrorism increasing, its breadth is increasing as well,” it notes.

Steve Killelea, IEP executive chairman, told the BBC the latest increase in deaths from terrorism was primarily due to the civil war in Syria, which began in 2011.

“The destabilisation in Syria, which has now overflowed into Iraq, is where we feel the upsurge in terrorism,” Mr Killelea said.

The report, which investigates terrorism trends between 2000 and 2013, uses data from the US-based Global Terrorism Database.

It includes rankings of countries by the impact of terrorist activities, based on the number of terrorist

attacks, deaths and injuries from terrorism, and damage to property.

Five countries - Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria accounted for 80 percent of the deaths from terrorism in 2013.

More than 6,000 people died in Iraq alone.

India, Somalia, the Philippines, Yemen and Thailand were the next five, with between 1 percent and 2.3 percent of global deaths by terrorism. Although Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries only experienced 5 percent of all deaths from terrorism since 2000, they suffered some of the deadliest attacks, the report said.

These included the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US, the 2004 Madrid train bombings, the 2005 London bombings, and the bombing and shooting attack in Norway in 2012.

During 2013, Turkey and Mexico were the OECD countries with the highest number of deaths from terrorism, at 57 and 40 respectively.

The report said that the four main groups were responsible for 66 percent of all deaths from terrorist attacks in 2013: Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Boko Haram and the selfstyled Islamic State.

All four groups used “religious ideologies based on extreme interpretations of Wahhabi Islam”,

it added.

“To counteract the rise of religious extremism, moderate Sunni theologies need to be cultivated by credible forces within Islam,” the report said, but it was important that “moderate Sunni countries and not outside influences” led such a response.

The report added that religious ideology was not the only motivation for terrorism.

“There are many peaceful Muslimmajority countries that do not suffer from terrorism such as Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait, underscoring how there are other social, political and geopolitical factors at play,” the report said.

Nairobi is the 5th best city in this year’s Good Cities index Nairobi has landed the 5th spot in this year’s Good Cities index, making it one of the world’s top destinations to watch in 2015.

The Index is a thorough ranking of the leading cities from around the world which measures the potential of cities across the globe.

The system, which ranks 50 top “cities of possibility”, listed Hong Kong as the number one city.

Johannesburg in South Africa was second, Mexico City in Mexico was third, while Delhi in India came fourth with Nairobi taking the fifth position.

Only five US cities made the list, including New Orleans, Detroit, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Santa Fe. With regard to the results, Good Cities Editor Rosie Spinks

said: “We look at which cities have been moving in the right direction over the past few years and which cities have inspired us, which have been dealt some heavy blows and how they have responded to them.” The survey was started in July and Spinks described the process as “very labour intensive.”

“This year we focused on what has happened since we published last year’s index, so you’ll see a lot of references to current events, like the floods that took place in Belgrade and how Dakar responded to the Ebola epidemic,” she explained. “We find locals or adopted locals living in those places and ask them to tell us how it feels to be on the ground there right now, even if it’s not perfect.”

University of Nairobi students last evening went on the rampage to protest what they termed persistent power outages. Several motorists had their vehicles damaged during the riot along State House Road and parts of University Way. Police say they have so far received ten complaints.

Some motorists were also robbed. Police were later mobilised to divert motorists from the roads which the rioting students had blocked.

Woman stripped yet again as police arrest over 100

A middle-aged woman is admitted at the Mama Lucy Hospital after she was beaten up and stripped naked in Kayole over claims that she was indecently dressed. The woman was at a bus stop at Mihango area last evening when she was accosted by a group of young men who accused her of being indecent.

This prompted a confrontation that saw her get roughed up and stripped naked. The gang later escaped as police approached the scene.

Police arrested 10 people at the time while another 100 more were netted in a later swoop.

The incident came just hours after a group protested in Nairobi, following an incident where a group of men tore off a woman’s clothes for wearing a miniskirt.

The protesters, chanting “Shame on You”, later handed out flowers

at a bus stop where the earlier stripping incident had occurred.

The protest had been organised by a group of women after a video of the attack went viral on social media last week.

Deputy President William Ruto waged into the debate, saying Kenya was not a “primitive” society and the men who stripped the woman should be arrested.

Both men and women, some dressed in miniskirts, marched to the bus rank and the offices of Inspector General David Kimaiyo, demanding an end to violence against women.

Rival protesters gathered outside Mr Kimaiyo’s office, where they were joined by a conservative Christian group.

Mr Kimaiyo has appealed to the unnamed woman in the first stripping incident to lodge an official complaint with police so that the incident is investigated.

Couple gets electrocuted The body of a woman in her mid-20s was found dumped on the roadside in Nduaru, near Kawangware. Witnesses said the woman appeared to have been abused before being killed. And in nearby Kinoo, a couple was electrocuted in their house last night. The bodies of the man, 42, and woman, 60, were found in their house long after the incident happened. Police say they are investigating on the incident.

Gunmen kill elder at Daadab A 55-year-old man was shot dead by unknown gunmen at the Dadaab Refugee camp.

The man was confronted by unknown gunmen who shot him at close range. No arrest has been made so far. Police say the man is an elder at the camp and investigations have been launched.

Kenyan named on Interpol’s wildlife crimes’ most wanted list A Kenyan has been named among nine people Interpol is seeking for help to arrest for committing environmental crimes.

Feisal Mohammed Ali is among the fugitives being sought after by the world’s largest international police organization for allegations of ivory smuggling in Kenya.

He has been accused as the leader of the smuggling ring and is being sought in connection with the seizure of 314 ivory pieces, weighing well over two tonnes in Mombasa in June. The public is being asked to provide information on the locations of the fugitives suspected of serious environmental crimes like illegal fishing, logging and wildlife trafficking.

The trade in wildlife crime is said to be worth around $213 billion (Sh18 trillion) annually according to the UN. This is the first time that individuals have been targeted. Investigators from 21 countries gathered at Interpol’s headquarters in

France in October to share information on suspects involved in a range of crimes involving the environment.

Called Operation Infra Terra, the agency is now asking for assistance from the public in tracking down nine key suspects.

“Even the smallest detail, which you might think is insignificant, has the potential to break a case wide open when combined with additional evidence the police already have,” said Ioannis Kokkinis, from Interpol.

“Sometimes all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes to bring new momentum to an investigation and provide the missing clue which will help locate these wanted individuals, some of whom have been evading justice for years,” he added.

12, 510 ghost workers purged as probe begins Some 12,510 public service workers who failed to register in the just concluded biometric listing have been struck off the payroll and will not get any more salaries as the government tightens the noose on ghost workers.

Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru disclosed the news while presenting a preliminary findings of a report on the listings. She however said public servants who could not register either because they were sick or on leave have not been purged.

“As a way forward, the InterGovernmental Steering Committee has deliberated and directed that both the national government and county governments stop salaries of

the 12,510 who have failed to show up for the exercise with immediate effect,” a statement issued by IGSC after receiving the Capacity Assessment and Rationalisation of the Public Service (CARPS) report said. Those whose salaries have been stopped were calculated to be withdrawing Sh600 million from the exchequer per month in salaries.

The findings also showed that about 300 other state employees were well beyond the official retirement age of 60. Public Service Commission chairperson Prof. Margaret Kobia they would move to establish who was responsible for the introduction of ghost workers into the service and that appropriate legal action to follow.

65,000 Kenyans living in slavery: Report Modern slavery is still rife in Kenya with about 65,000 people remaining in bondage, a new world report says.

Out of the 167 countries ranked

by The Global Slavery Index, 2014, 64,900 Kenyans are living in the various forms of slavery including human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage or sexual exploitation.

Among the countries studies, Walk Free Foundation found that 35.8 million people globally are under servitude.

Kenya is ranked 136 in the list, which had India as the leading country with about 14.9 million slaves. The report says there is a general rise in the number of slaves globally as compared to two decades ago. Recent surveys in Kenya have shown that Kenya is a source, transit and destination for human trafficking, which is one of the forms of slavery.

Urban areas have been identifies da s the recipients of trafficked people, especially children, from the rural areas.

Developer working towards decongesting major cities

Real Estate developer Home Afrika has rolled out a new strategy that will see it engage in real estate projects nationwide to avail affordable and decent housing to Kenyans.

The project, dubbed Go County, will see the company develop decent housing in other towns in a bid to decongest major cities in the country.

Speaking during a press conference, Home Afrika Chief Executive Officer, Njoroge Ng’ang’a said the project will be beneficial to the devolved Government as it will bring about numerous growth and investment opportunities in the counties.

He said the Go County Strategy will implement 10 projects in the next five years and that the company is currently involved in

five projects valued at Sh18 billion.

“The Go County strategy is aligned to the devolved system of government which has given rise to significant investment opportunities in the counties,” said Ng’ang’a.

Nganga said the recent Capital Markets Authority (CMA) approval to issue a corporate bond in the local market is a strong indicator of the authority’s confidence is Home Afrika as an investment avenue of choice.

“The funds raised from the bond will be invested into a number of ongoing projects among them their flagship project Migaa in Kiambu County, Lakeview Heights in Kisumu County and the Llango project in Kwale County,” said Ng’ang’a.

NGOs called to apply for Sh2.3m funding

The Conservation, Food and Health Foundation is accepting grant concept notes from non-profit organizations in developing countries, including Kenya.

The Foundation will give $25,000 (Sh2.3 million) to qualified NGOs that are focusing on conservation, food and health.

“The foundation supports research, training and technical assistance projects that employ or train personnel from developing countries,” said

Gamala Luitel, the group’s spokesperson.

The deadline for applications is January 1, 2015.

“Applications need to be submitted via online application system. To begin with the online application system, first complete one time registration in the GMA (Grantmakers Managers Advisors) Foundations portal,” Luitel said.

Machakos set to get first 5-star hotel Machakos is about to get its first five-Star hotel as construction of the Gelian Hotel nears completion.

Co-owned by Alphonse Kioko, the former CEO of Precision Air, the facility will be officially opened next month.

“These kinds of developments will raise the already growing reputation of Machakos County,” Machakos Governor, Alfred Mutua has said.

The hotel boasts two presidential suites, four ambassadorial suites, 36 deluxe rooms and 53 standard rooms, a total of 95 rooms.

The project, which is funded by the Kenya Commercial Bank, will be the first of its kind in the county.

“Machakos has no other five-Star facility and the Gelian Hotel is set to appeal to both local and

Calls for exchange programs revamp There is need for Kenyan universities to enhance their global competitiveness, it appears. This will be achieved if strong international campus environment is created through active exchange programs and providing relevant support to incoming and outgoing students.

Through rapid globalization, Kenyan universities can benefit from advanced ideas in information technology and crosscultural exchanges, which are some of the gains that international linkages present.

Senior Administrator at the Centre for International Programmes and Links at the University of Nairobi, Sydney Kili says there is need to embrace international university linkages through vibrant and proactive student mobility programmes, international research collaborations and international academic networks.

He says that this will be an added advantage for Kenyan graduates in the job market.

“Current labour markets are acknowledging the importance of graduates obtaining foreign language and intercultural skills in order for them to compete at global levels. Universities in Kenya should embrace international collaborations by promoting academic networks and managing institutional partnerships,” says Kili.

Kili advises local universities to create unique orientation programmes for international students which prepare them for culture shock while ensuring smooth transitions into foreign countries.

He urges local and international universities to have a clear and standardised grading and credit transfer system and enhance processing of academic and travel documents quickly so as to facilitate the exchange programmes.

Many times artists are bogged down by thoughts of how they can get the perfect piece rather than having fun in creating art. They tend to overwork their brains in trying to come up with that masterpiece not knowing the damage that has on their creativity. Just create art for art’s sake and experience bursts of inspiration you had never felt before.

Great artists are great readers.

Reading broadens our imagination and engages our minds. A good book might land you into inspiration zone in an instant.

Always carry a scrapbook with you or small book where you can scribble down a few ideas or sketches even when you are going about your daily activities. This will help you remember the key things and jolt your mind into creativity.

Change scenery. Sometimes our minds get accustomed to the surrounding and get used to it such that we can no longer get inspired in the same environment. Take a road trip to the country side and work from there. Take a walk down

the park, market, and riverside and watch your creativity bar rise by the minute.

Go back to your previous works and just admire and critic them.

This will give you fresh ideas and help come up with better pieces. Believe it or not they will inspire you in one way or another.

Do not lose sleep over it, no matter how tight the deadline.

Hit the sack and do not stress. Sleeping will not only rejuvenate your body but will also enhance your creativity.

arly this year, a study carried out in Britain by Open University, showed that childless married and unmarried couples were more satisfied in life and felt more valued by their partners than those with children. Unmarried parents were said to be quite happier than married parents.

However, not everyone agrees with these findings. In the African society, despite modernization and changing times, children remain a vital part of a marriage.

“My family regards children as the definition of a marriage. My fiancé and I have planned on having three of our own,” said Martin Mulwa.

Most people look forward to starting a family when they get married. Actually some people get married to ensure continuity of their bloodline .This was common in the past in traditional African societies where another women would be married to bear children if the first wife was not conceiving.

But what happens when a woman fails to conceive or a man can’t father a child?

Does that automatically spell doom for a marriage?

Seeing your friends with their toddlers may ignite a yearning of parenthood which is normal. But if you cannot have children, this feeling should not cloud the possibility of a good marriage. In that case, no one should be blamed. “It has been 14 years since we

got married but our relentless efforts to get a child have been futile,” says Margie Omweya. Margie’s husband suggested adoption but she was not for the idea so he did not force it.

“At no point has my husband ever prioritized having children over our happiness. I know he badly wanted children but we accepted that it is beyond our control,” adds Margie who at 33, is still clutching on hope.

Like Margie and her husband, there are people who have chosen the man or woman over children and lived happily. Whether they are childless by choice or struggling to conceive. It may be depressing in the beginning but as they say, enduring love conquers all.

Those unwilling to adopt but can afford/ are okay with surrogacy or test tube reproduction can go ahead with either. But if none works, a couple can choose to have a joyous childless marriage.

“Having children does not guarantee the success of a relationship. I have seen couples who have very beautiful children but are miserable,” says Matu Muhambi a Nairobi based Psychologist, who concurs that a marriage is knitted together by several factors.

It would be sad to miss out on the greatness of marriage because you decide to let your childlessness state define your joy.

Sport Treu promises a stellar show in World Series National rugby 7’s head coach Paul Treu says Kenyans should expect a much-improved performance from his charges when the 2014/15 HSBC World Series resumes in Dubai and South Africa next month.

The series opener was a disaster in Gold Coast following a strike by a majority senior players in September.

Kenya collected two points from the disappointing leg.

Treu is optimistic that the team

will perform well in the two legs and put their campaign back on track.

“We will have a balanced team in Dubai following the return of these (experienced) players.

How0ever, they will have to compete for places because the guys we had in Gold Coast showed a lot of potential and deserve another chance.”

He said the relationship between new and returning players is positive. However,

the issues between the older players and Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) have not been fully settled. But Treu is happy thatKRU and sponsors Kenya Airways are working to settle everything fast.

“They are really working hard on that because players’ welfare is important. It is a process since some of the issues they raised were contractual which obviously cannot happen overnight.”

Former FA boss calls for FIFA boycott, resigns from board The Football Association (FA) has been urged to lobby Uefa for a European boycott of the next World Cup - unless Fifa implements meaningful reform.

Former FA chairman David Bernstein said it was time for “drastic” action against the governing body.

He believes the tournament could not be taken seriously without Europe’s major nations and that a boycott would be supported by the English public.

Meanwhile, Bernstein has resigned from Fifa’s anti-discrimination taskforce.

He described it as “ineffectual” and wishes to end his ties with the organisation.

“I think England within Uefa undoubtedly have the power to influence Fifa, but to do so they would have to consider withdrawing from the World Cup, the next World Cup, unless proper reform - including Mr Blatter not standing [for a fifth term] - is carried out at Fifa.

“At some stage you have to walk the talk, stop talking and do something.”

Gor could soon land deal on sponsor TUESday, november 18, 2014

“Leave the sponsorship issue to me,” were the words of President Uhuru Kenyatta to Gor Mahia chairman, Ambrose Rachier when the Kenyan champions visited Kenyatta at State house Nairobi last Friday.

Uhuru’s promise came with a Sh3 million reward to the team for retaining the KPL title. Of the Sh3 million, two million will go directly to the club’s kitty while Sh1million will be shared amongst the team members.

The move by the president came after Rachier briefed the president on the club’s financial situation.

Gor’s contract with Dairy producer Tuzo, a subsidiary of

Brookside Dairy Limited owned by the Kenyatta family ended in March. It has been rumoured that Tuzo are likely to offer the Kenyan champions an improved deal for the coming two seasons.

Gor struggled through most of the season surviving on good will and fans fundraising efforts.

Gor will now shift their attention to next year’s CAF competition where captain Jerim Onyango promised to help the team progress ‘as far as possible’.

“We are hoping for a better return to continental football, we need to work hard not just for the team but also for Kenya at large as we shall be representing the nation,” he said.

A first-of-its-kind event that will bring over 5000 football fans across the country is in the works. After a turfpounding season of the domestic football, the Kenya Premier League (KPL) Fans Fun Day promises to offer supporters and fans of the local game a chance to come together for some fun irrespective of their loyalty and allegiance.

The one-day event, slated December 13, at the Nairobi City Stadium also aims to promote renewed interest in Kenyan football, fostering cohesion through the sport as well as moving a step towards stemming matchday crowd troubles and violence.

Organisers of the event say that a variety of activities for everyone including soccer, sack races, eating completion, dancing competition, ball juggling and short sprints among others have been put together.

Fred Mwalo, a member of the tournament’s Organising Committee revealed that

plans are underway to have the event staged at the end of every season.

“This will be a great way to bring fans from all the KPL teams together to interact, play and get to know each other hence fostering cohesion,” he said.

Mwalo further added that fans will be grouped not according to the team they support in the league but basically fun teams for the sake of togetherness.

“We are not grouping people according to the KPL clubs they support. We will have fans from different clubs playing together for instance I’ll be in a team called KPL Hippos, where we have a staunch Shabana lady, Kerubo Momanyi,” he noted.

Some of the teams that have already submitted their registration for the event are Rhinos, Mambas, Swaras, Impalas, Simbas, Falcons ,Team Bibla, Team Mafisi, Nyatis, Hippos, Ndovu and Tigers.

Registration closes on November 28.

Tejas Hirani and Ryan Bailey are the 2014 Kenya National Autocross Champions after winning their classes with one round to spare.

Croatia coach expecting punishment

Croatia coach Niko Kovac expects European governing body Uefa to punish his country following trouble during a Euro 2016 qualifier in Italy.

The match ended 1-1 but was marred by crowd unrest as fans threw fireworks and smoke bombs on to the pitch.

Referee Bjorn Kuipers was forced to twice stop the game and 16 Croatia supporters were arrested.

Machine, Leos,KU in Kings of Rugby A total of 12 universities will battle it out in the inaugural Kings of Rugby 7s Tournament that was officially launched on Monday in Nairobi.

The twelve teams have been pooled into three groups of four teams each with Kenya Cup sides Strathmore University, Kenyatta University and University of Nairobi the top seeds.

This is a timely venture as KUSA looks to prepare and select teams for the World University games (28th Summer Universiade) that will be held next August in Gwangju, South Korea.

The one day tourney is the first of its kind in the country exclusively for university teams and will be held at RFUEA grounds on November 29.

The overall winner will take home Sh150, 000 with the losing finalist bagging Sh75, 000. From next year, all the five conferences under KUSA will hold at least one tournament that will be factored into four circuits.

The event is organised by the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) and sponsored by EXP Agency,

a leading experiential marketer in Africa. KUSA vice chairman Boniface Salano said the tournament is as a result of an idea that has been in the works for long time.

“This is something we have been dreaming of for some time now. Every time we attend international university events, the question has been about when we will take up the challenge and this is the time.” Top officials from the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) have been invited to spruce up the tournament as organizers seek to align it with the structures of the continental body.

EXP Agency Managing Director Simon Manambo paid tribute to all universities that have registered to take part in the tourney under KUSA. He said the main aim of their sponsorship is to help expose more talent within universities that is largely untapped.
