Remembering Otieno Kajwang It was a somber mood around the country as Kenyans woke up to news that flamboyant Homabay senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang is dead. Mr Kajwang died Tuesday night at the Mater Hospital in Nairobi, where he was rushed after complaining of chest pains. Doctors pronounced him dead from cardiac arrest at 11.30pm. He had been rushed to the hospital from his Runda home to see his personal physician at 9pm after complaining of the pains. “He complained of chest pains and was rushed to Mater Hospital in the company of his wife. He in fact walked out of the car by himself.
Doctors examined him for high blood pressure and suspected cardiac arrest. They struggle before losing the battle a couple of hours later,” opposition leader, Raila Odinga told reporters early today at the Lee Funeral Home, where Mr Kajwang’s body was taken to. Since the news of his death broke out, Kenyans and leaders from across have been paying glowing tributes to the former Cabinet minister. President Uhuru Kenyatta said he had learnt of the late senator’s death with “utter shock and great sorrow.” “Senator Kajwang’s death is not only a big blow to his family but also to the people of Homa Bay
TEARS AND SORROW: Opposition leader Raila Odinga joins the family of the late Homabay Senator, Otieno Kajwang in mourning the fallen leader. Kajwang passed on at 11:30pm on Tuesday, from cardiac arrest. His body was moved from the Mater Hospital, where he died, to the Lee Funeral Home.
County and the whole country which he served with commitment and dedication first as a Member of Parliament, a Minister and a senator. I will always remember him as an eloquent debater, a patriot and a nationalist. He was an energetic, jovial and an extremely pleasant person to deal with,” he said “I convey my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Senator Kajwang’s family, relatives, friends and the people of Homa Bay who he served diligently. I pray the Almighty God gives you all the strength and courage to bear the tragic loss,” Kenyatta added in his condolence message sent to newsrooms.
Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, who was among leaders who viewed the body at the Lee Funeral Home, described him as a happy man. “We will surely miss him very much,” he said. Others who paid their tributes included Deputy President William Ruto, Senate majority and minority leaders Kindiki Kithure and Moses Wetangula among other leaders. Raila told journalists that Kajwang had been involved in a road accident after a function in Oyugis last week but he escaped unhurt. According to the American Heart Association, cardiac arrest, which killed Kajwang, is the abrupt loss
of heart function in a person who may or may not have diagnosed heart disease. “The time and mode of death are unexpected. It occurs instantly or shortly after symptoms appear,” the association notes. Kajwang was born on July 15, 1959 and died aged 55. He studied law at the University of Nairobi and later joined politics representing Mbita constituency between 1998 and 2013. He was appointed cabinet minister for Immigration in 2008 by then president Mwai Kibaki. In 2013, he was elected to represent Homabay County as the senator. Among his siblings is Ruarak MP Tom Kajwang.

MPs strip boards of accreditation
Majority of Kenyans have some faith in the Judiciary, says Afrobarometer A lot of Kenyans trust the country’s justice system though not many people have complete faith in it, a survey from the Afrobarometer has revealed. The Afrobarometer is a comparative series of public attitude surveys, covering up to 35 African countries. It measures public attitudes on democracy and its alternatives, evaluations of the quality of governance and economic performance. In addition, the survey assesses the views of the electorate on critical political issues in the surveyed countries. Afrobarometer’s work in Kenya
Parliament has passed a new law that strips professional boards the role to accredit and inspect degree course offered by the universities. MPs have instead given the Commission for University Education (CUE) the exclusive mandate to do so. The matter has created a stalemate in recent years with many students locked out of job opportunities after such professional boards failed to accredit their degrees.
is coordinated by the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Nairobi. One survey, in particular, interviews hundreds of adult Kenyans, revealing that confidence in the justice system has improved by roughly 16 per cent since 2008. Currently, 60 per cent of Kenyans say they trust the courts ‘somewhat’ or ‘a lot’, rebounding from a low of just 44 per cent who said this in 2008. This means that onethird of Kenyans have very low levels of trust in the judiciary while the rest don’t have any idea how these things work.
More arms seized in another mosque raid
Police staged yet another raid on a third mosque in Kisauni, Mombasa, during which they recovered crude weapons, petrol bombs, a hand grenade and six bullets. The security operation was conducted at the Masjid Swafaa mosque where petrol bombs, grenades and ammunitions were recovered. “We had a security operation at the mosque but we will give you more details later,” Kisauni Police chief Richard Ngatia said of the operation, conducted two days after the area. A police officer involved in the operation said no suspect was arrested in the raid conducted at dawn today. It is believed the targeted youths sneaked out of the mosque as the officers arrived. Police said they had intelligence there were youths hiding in the mosque following a similar operation on Monday.
Already, Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa has disclosed that individuals with political ambitions are sponsoring the youths to cause chaos in the region. Although he declined to reveal their names, he said they are still gathering more evidence against them to sustain charges in court. “At least 16 credible suspects have been arrested,” Marwa said. Tension remain high in the area with police officers camping at Mwandoni in Kisauni where four people were stabbed to death Monday evening as the youths retaliated for the raids. During the Monday raid, over 200 suspects were arrested but only 15 were taken to court on Tuesday. Police said others were interrogated and released. The suspects were charged for possessing hand grenades

Nairobi to go digital by Dec The government has set new deadlines for digital TV migration in which viewers in Nairobi are expected to switch to the new platform by the end of the year. The whole country is expected to switch to digital by March according to the new developments revealed by Communications Authority of Kenya director general Francis Wangusi yesterday. “The deadline for digital migration in Nairobi has been set for December 31,” Mr. Wangusi announced. The migration to the digital platform was initially scheduled for end of December 2012 but contentious issues and court cases forced the consequent drag. The global deadline for the migration is June 2015. The announcement by Mr. Wangusi followed a Supreme Court decision that ordered
the authority open dialogue with media houses and agree on new switch dates within 90 days. It is now 52 days since that ruling was made on September 29. City television viewers who have not bought set top boxes will now have to do so in order to beat the new deadline. Such boxes cost between Sh2, 000 and Sh3, 000 in Nairobi. Among the benefits viewers are expected to enjoy when the switch is finally done include better quality television signals and access services that had been constrained by lack of spectrum such as 4G internet. It will also bring with it more choice and electronic program guides among others. Further, viewers will receive more content free or at a subscription fee. Content developers and signal distributors will also earn more revenue.
State faults judge in recruitment appeal
The government has appealed against High Court Judge Justice Isaac Lenaola’s (pictured) ruling that revoked the enlisting of 8, 749 police recruits. In an appeal filed yesterday, the Attorney General, the National Police Service and the National Police Service Commission say the judge failed to consider the challenges faced during the recruitment and the urgency with which new officers are needed. Chief Litigation Counsel Stella Munyi further says that the judge did not rule in the interest of the public who she argues need police protection. “The judge made a mistake in law and fact by ruling that the commission violated the constitution in delegating the powers to recruit police,” she submits in the appeal. She also wants the Appeals Court to find that the judge made further errors by nullifying the recruitment and giving orders that compromised the rights of the recruits who lost their
positions. The three are now praying to the Court of Appeal to set aside the High Court order for fresh recruitment and allow the 8, 749 new officers to join training camps. Justice Lenaola last month nullified the listing done in July saying it was marred by irregularities which violated the provisions of the constitution. The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) had filed the case in which it sought the recruitment’s nullification for widespread irregularities.

Reservists among four killed by bandits in Isiolo Two police reservists are among four people killed in a bandit attack that occurred in Isiolo on Monday night. The two others are villagers who were shot by heavily armed bandits who drove away hundreds of livestock from villages, according to police and the Kenya Red Cross. “One person is still admitted to the Isiolo Referral Hospital while four others succumbed to injuries,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a brief statement. Isiolo Police Chief Nelson Okioga confirmed the incident, saying that an investigation has been initiated and there’s hope the attackers will be arrested. The incident comes barely three weeks after a similar one in Kapedo, Turkana where 21 police officers were ambushed and killed by bandits. The government has since deployed the military to the affected area to mop up illegal firearms.
Jerusalem ramps up security after deadly synagogue attacks Jerusalem ramped up security after two Palestinian cousins wielding gun and butcher knives attacked a synagogue during morning prayers, killing four worshipers and a policeman. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a strong reaction to Tuesday’s killings. He characterized the attack, which drew condemnation from around the world, as the result of a “blood libel” fanned by Palestinian leaders. Even after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack, Netanyahu insisted it was “not enough” of a response. Addressing reporters Tuesday night, the Israeli Prime Minister called for national unity against “those human animals who committed this massacre” and against those -singling out Hamas and the Palestinian Authority -- who he claimed “disseminate libels against the state of Israel.” The terror attack, the
deadliest in Jerusalem since 2008, came at a particularly tense time in region. It follows recent deadly stabbings and vehicle attacks which, while not the same as the large-scale suicide bombings that defined last decade’s second intifada, have left Jerusalem on edge. At the heart of the unrest is the holy site in the old City of Jerusalem, known as the Temple Mount by Jews and Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary) by Muslims. Photos taken after the attack Tuesday inside the synagogue in West Jerusalem’s Har Nof area, and released by Israeli officials, showed a
grim scene. Lifeless bodies sprawled on the floor, a shattered pair of glasses, holy books, prayer shawls and walls soaked with blood. The pictures did not relay the full scope of the brutality. “It was much worse,” Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said. Three dual U.S.-Israeli citizens and a British-Israeli citizen died in the attack before police shot and killed the two assailants. Hours after the attack, a policeman was shot during the rampage while pulling a woman to safety died from his wounds, a hospital official said. The four worshipers
killed were Avraham Shmuel Goldberg, 58; Aryeh Kupinsky, 43; Moshe Twersky, 59; and Kalman Levine, 55. Goldberg was a dual British-Israeli citizen, and the other three were U.S.Israeli citizens. “When four great men, wonderful men, wise in Torah study, are slaughtered while praying in public, there is no public grieving greater than that,” said a rabbi who eulogized the men later Tuesday, before their burial. Seven others were wounded, including three who were seriously hurt, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

to prevent, restrict or distort competition. The price for the latest rights deal, which was announced in 2012, rose by 70 percent to £3 billion (Sh422.7 billion). It covers 2013 to 2016. Virgin has raised concerns about the number of Premier League matches for which live broadcasting rights are made available. They have argued that the proportion of matches made available for live television broadcast under the current Premier League rights deals, which is 41 percent, is lower than some other leading European leagues, where more matches are available for live television broadcast. The investigation comes just before the Premier League start the bidding process for the next rights from 2016 onwards.

Ignorance about online shopping costing consumers time, money In an age where shopping can be done from the comfort of one’s home, consumers are under the impression that they cannot buy anything online without the use of a credit card. Despite the fact that many Kenyans have embraced mobile banking, a lot of people believe they can’t shop online even though many e-commerce sites offer alternative forms of payment
Even with the increased availability of technology, recent research shows that Kenyan shoppers and Africans in general, are under the impression that the high cost of deliveries doesn’t justify the convenience of shopping from home. Some go as far as spending Sh1,000 on fuel, customer support services or even taxis to pick up electronics like fridges and TV sets, which can be delivered to their homes at a
lesser fee. Given the fact that online marketplaces like Rupu, Jumia and Shop It have made efforts to reach consumers, the number of online shoppers should increase in the coming months. However, some shoppers worry that the waiting period for the delivery of ordered items is too long and would rather pick up their items on their own.
In light of these challenges, some online retailers have opted for faster and more efficient ways to cut down the waiting period. Some service providers like Kilimall’s is working on what they call a Training and Delivery Project that will use flying drones to deliver packages to a person’s doorstep “within 30-minute delivery time” in Nairobi. Kariuki Maina, Kilimall Marketing
Manager says: “We don’t have clear laws and guidelines to govern use of unmanned planes so we can’t set a date when we will start using drones commercially but we are hoping sometime soon.” As such providers step up their game, it stands to reason that others will either follow suit or come up with new ways to appeal to their customers.

hustlersector Sellers stand to make as much as Sh22,000 a month from goat droppings Manure sellers can make as much as Sh22,000 a month selling goat droppings, research from the food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has discovered. Manure, which is sold in both rural and peri-urban areas across the country, fetches different prices with some sellers charging Sh50 per kg. For goat manure harvesters in Western Kenya, a single animal can produce 100 kg a year, meaning that one goat is worth Sh5,000 over that period in time. By collecting the droppings in a wheelbarrow, some workers can manage to handle droppings from as many as 2 to 30 goats every day. Moses Onim, from the
Director Inmersion Limited, Sangeeta Patel said the exhibition also aims at showcasing the best companies in Africa and Asia and provide a platform for establishment of cross-culture connections. “We are promoting Kenya as a global gateway to East Africa. This is a chance to bridge the cultural gap between Africa and Asia and we are promising a wonderful experience for both cultures,” said Sangheeta, Exhibitors from Kenya, Syria, Pakistan, India, Egypt, China, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa, Iran, and Mauritius will be showcasing their wares.
University of Nairobi’s Department of Crop Science says that a single goat produces approximately 100 kg of manure a year. “The fertiliser potential of goat manure is excellent but costing it is not easy,” explains Onim. “However, farmers can sell a wheelbarrow full of wet goat manure for about Sh20.” From Onim’s estimates, one mature goat can generate approximately Sh1140 worth of manure a year. For those who herd the goats as well as sell the manure, the actual profitability of the side business would require putting a price on all the needed expenses, including housing, feed production, labour and veterinary drugs among others.

Kilifi County farmers embrace irrigation to triple their yields Vitalis Penda, a farmer from Kilifi County has cut down his reliance on rainwater and by so doing, he has tripled his earnings. The 37-year-old entrepreneur has embraced irrigation, turning his parched land into a thriving farm of
vegetables and beans. “I used to get nothing from this farm when I used to wait for the rain. Now when you look at it, you see the vegetables and the beans are very green and healthy because I irrigate it,” says Penda.

Back when he used to rely on rain-fed agriculture, he would harvest at most four bags of beans. Last season, after irrigating his land, he stacked up 12 bags.In the largely semi-arid coastal district of Kilifi, a group of over 1,000 small-scale farmers have formed an association through which they pool money, approximately Sh350 each, for the purchase of irrigation equipment like pedal pumps, watering cans and water pipes. In Central Kenya, farmers like Penda use solar-powered water pumps along seasonal rivers as a cheap way of irrigating their farms. “The innovation by farmers is a clear demonstration that they want something that would get them out of food insecurity. They want support to produce more,” says James Samo, an agricultural production specialist at the ministry of Agriculture. The ministry of Agriculture estimates that as much as 90 per cent of food consumed in Kenya is produced by smallholder farmers.

H
ome space has never been enough and you always find yourself striving to create more room to accommodate new items. Floating shelves help address the need for more arrangement space. They can be used in most rooms, from the store, bathroom, study, living and media center to the kitchen and bedroom. George Abere, an interior designer, says these shelves give you more space to place the most frequently used items, while creating space in the cabinets for those that you seldom need. “For instance, in the kitchen, food ingredients you do not regularly use can be fit into wall cabinets while cooking fat and salt can be put on these easily accessible

spaces,” said Abere. Studies, home offices and libraries can be untidy with strewn books, papers and files that cannot fit into the small cabinets or drawers. But a floating shelve will help you keep the place neat. Besides the extra space, they can spice up your room. The shelves are fixed on the walls in style, varying with different lengths. Those painted with a variant colour that does not resonate with the walls clash to add a beautiful effect to your space. Most floating shelves are customized but there are some prefabricated ones that can be bought and screwed on without the need of a carpenter. Go on, try something new this festive season with floating shelves, you have everything to gain.
WHY a brusH makes all tHe DIfference for Your paInt job As an amateur, you may wonder why your paintjob looks ugly even after buying the best quality paint and keenly following instructions in mixing. Here is your answer— the brush! Brushes are made from natural or synthetic materials. Natural filament brushes may be slightly expensive but they ease your work especially if you are using oil-based paint. Natural filaments absorb the water, making it inefficient. Synthetic bristled brushes are best for water-based paints. However, modification have been done to some synthetic brushes to make them both oil
and water based tools, but you must confirm this from your distributor. A good brush compliments the quality paint to give that smooth sheen on walls or furniture. Hand testing gives you room to pick the best, which you will comfortably work with. A brush which does not fit your palm will not give uniform strokes and spreads of the coating. It will be burdensome and tiring to use too. Vanishing furniture calls for the light and right brush, which if you cannot choose alone, ask your supplier for help. Paint surfaces will determine the size of brush to buy. Painting a wall
may require a wider brush as opposed to a window grille or piece of furniture. You may opt to have more than one brush for your paintjob. Square cut brushes are good for almost any surface, but to get better corner cuts, you may want to try a sash brush, which has angled bristles. Split-end bristles spread more paint smoothly because they hold more and do an even job. But the general rule for nonprofessionals is to use bigger brushes with long bristles for easier and enhanced finish. There you have it the brush may well alter the quality of your paint job, choose wisely.

Who is your favourite fashion designer internationally and locally? There is just too much to pick from but if I am picking with the first ones that come to mind, I would go for Victoria Beckham and Patricia Mbela.

Punish those behind ghost workers
The Government must investigate and put faces to those involved in ghost workers rackets to deter future infiltration into the public coffers. Dismissal of the more than 12,000 workers is not enough. Putting faces to these shadows must lead to successful prosecution (12, 510
ghost workers purged as probe begins November 18, 2014). Those culprits, no matter their position, must be forced to vomit all they have stolen from the Government, even by auctioning their property, because their actions amount to economic crimes.
As the Government embraces technology, the parasites will also device ways of barricading themselves into the new system if they are not uprooted. They will also keep a step or two ahead of the Government to avoid being caught because technology seems to be trusted.
Stern measures are likely to discourage those planning to engage in this swindling of public funds to free more money to fund public projects and mitigate the socio-economic challenges facing the country. Similarly, the salary they have been drawing can absorb more
youths wallowing in abject poverty due to joblessness, which have predisposed them to crime to earn a living. Regular and abrupt scrutiny of the payroll will equally instil fear in those who may not be netted in the swoop, but still have the ill intentions. —Sam Mwangi, Nairobi

Rooney forever an Evertonian, says club boss
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright says he can envisage Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wanting to end his playing days back at Goodison Park. Rooney rose through the Everton ranks before joining United for Sh3.5billion in 2004. Asked whether he could ever see a day when Rooney, 29, would return to finish his career with the Toffees, Kenwright said: “Yes.” “He comes back to
Goodison. He’s an Evertonian and his family are. He is welcome to come back,” Kenwright said. “In all honesty, all I ever do is advice. I am not sidestepping the question. It is always going to be Roberto Martinez’s choice.” Kenwright, 69, also hopes Everton boss Martinez will enjoy a tenure as long as his managerial predecessor David Moyes. Moyes, who was named as Real Sociedad manager last
week following his sacking at Manchester United in April, consistently guided the Toffees to finishes in the top half of the Premier League although he failed to win a single trophy during an 11-year stint on Merseyside. “Roberto is an extraordinary man. I would be thrilled if he wanted to commit for the length of time David did,” Kenwright added.
THE DOOR IS OPEN: Everton boss Bill Kenwright says Wayne Rooney is always welcome at Everton, when the time to end his career comes.
Prisons’ new recruits join team National women volleyball champions, Kenya Prisons have signed new players from Kwathanze Secondary School and Malava Girls’ High School. The four are: Ann Lowen, Ivone Wavinya and Irene Mbula from Kwanthanze and Shirlene Chepkemoi from Malava. The new players have already linked up with the team at the Kasarani indoor arena in preparation for the forthcoming National League play offs to be staged in
Mombasa next weekend. Head coach David Lung’aho, however, said that the four don’t qualify for the playoffs because they were not registered at the start of the season. “We have not signed them for play offs but for next season and the seasons to come. Having watched them in training in their respective schools I can say I am impressed,” he said. “We want them to learn our style of play and get used to
us, with the senior players around I am sure they will learn a lot in their career development,” he added. Lung’aho also noted that he will cope in next week’s play offs even without key players in the squad. Players Jane Wacu, Braxcides Khadambi and Mercy Moim all turned professional in August. “They are very important players for us, but we got to be happy when you see players grow, it good news for Kenyan football,” he said.

Ingwe coach De Jongh could be axed WEDNESday, november 19, 2014
Concerns over current coach AFC Leopards Pieter De Jongh’s tenure have been growing, with speculations that he could be axed in the coming days. Sources from the club have confirmed that the Pieter De Jongh could be on his way out after a barren season with the club. “The club is in the process of assessing the options available, there are local and foreign coaches in the shortlist, tough I can’t be certain on who will be settled at,” said a source at the club. Despite having one of the best playing units, the 12-time Kenyan champions finished the league sixth with 41 points, a massive 19 behind champions Gor Mahia. Ingwe’s poor run has been blamed on the Dutchman’s tactics, his poor communication
skills and inability to hold the dressing room together. Throughout the season, De Jong endured a rather difficult working relationship with the club’s National Executive Committee. Another senior member of the NEC has indicated that not only the coach will be released but a list of players who failed to excite. “A number of high profile players failed to sparkle. That leaves us in difficult position as far as their position in the team is concerned, in the coming weeks we shall release such players,” he added. Meanwhile, the club’s ex coach Luc Eymael could be on his way back to the club. Eymael was sacked in September last year after just a season with the club. He had a troubled time with the club’s leadership.

Ex-tennis player Ferrero to be caddie Sergio Garcia will use former French Open tennis champion Juan Carlos Ferrero as his caddie when he defends his Thailand Open title next month. Ferrero claimed his only Grand Slam with victory at Roland Garros in 2003 and retired in 2012. “I’ve played golf with him many times but he never caddied for me before,” said Garcia about his fellow Spaniard. “We just talked about it and he mentioned about it and we decided to do it. He is excited about it.” The Thailand Open takes place between 11-14 December and world number six Garcia faces competition from US Masters champion Bubba Watson, US Open champion Martin Kaymer and former world number ones Lee Westwood and Ernie Els. Last year, Garcia’s girlfriend Katharina Boehm was his caddie as he won the tournament. “Katharina is fine,” added Garcia. “She is happy to step aside and support from the sidelines. It always helps to have a friend on your bag. “It is good fun to be able to enjoy golf and have a good time with a good close friend.”

Caterham have announced that they will retain Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Oxfordshire-based team have missed the last two races due to
financial problems, but will compete at the season-ending race thanks to a successful crowdfunding project. “It will be nice to be back in the car,” Kobayashi said. “This team is working hard and never gives up.”
Caterham say they will announce their second driver “in due course”. Kobayashi, 28, has raced 14 times this season, but was dropped for the Belgian Grand Prix, and also criticised Caterham over repairs made
to his car during the Russian Grand Prix weekend. Finnbarr O’Connell, the team’s administrator, said: “The team are delighted to have Kamui on board for the race weekend in Abu Dhabi.”
Swede Marcus Ericsson, who has driven alongside Kobayashi for most of the season, terminated his Caterham contract with immediate effect earlier this week.

Royal Derby: England trump Scots Scots lose as Germany, Portugal snatch wins in frendlies England notched up a 3-1 victory over old foes Scotland while world champions Germany and Portugal sealed last-gasp 1-0 wins over Spain and Argentina respectively in friendlies. Wayne Rooney became England’s thirdhighest goal-scorer outright as Roy Hodgson’s side defeated the Scots Tuesday to record a sixth successive victory. Alex OxladeChamberlain put England ahead at Celtic Park and Rooney scored either side of a late Andy Robertson strike to chalk up his 45th and 46th international goals on his 101st appearance. It took the Manchester United striker clear of Jimmy Greaves, with whom he had previously shared third place, and left him three goals shy of Bobby Charlton’s all-time record and two goals behind Gary Lineker. “I’ve always loved playing for England,” said Rooney. “I’m on a good run of goals and I hope that continues. If that means I break the record then I’ll
be delighted.” Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest duel with Lionel Messi proved a damp squib as the two superstars played for just 45 minutes of their match Old Trafford. The 27th meeting between Portugal winger Ronaldo and Argentina forward Messi had been billed as a golden opportunity for the world’s two best players to underline their credentials for this year’s Ballon D’or award. But neither Barcelona’s Messi nor Real Madrid’s Ronaldo were anywhere near their brilliant best, with the latter especially anonymous on just his second return to Old Trafford since his 2009 move from Manchester United. In the end, Portugal claimed only their second win over Argentina, and their first since 1972, thanks to Raphael Guerreiro’s diving header in stoppage-time. Germany’s victory over Spain, the team that preceded them as world champions, came in a game between two experimental sides thanks to a 90th-
