Demonstrators demand Kimaiyo, Lenku sacking

WE WANT THEM OUT: (Clockwise) Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale joins protestors calling for the sacking of Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku and Inspector General David Kimaiyo. A pro-government group takes to the streets in support of Lenku and Kimaiyo. More protestors calling for the sacking of the duo.

Protesters have given President Uhuru Kenyatta two weeks to sack Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku and Inspector General David Kimaiyo over what they termed as “tragic security failures.” The protesters, who demonstrated outside the President’s Harambee House office earlier today, threatened to petition Parliament to have the two officers removed if they are not sacked within the deadline. But the demonstrations turned ugly after a rival pro-government group emerged in support of Lenku and Kimaiyo leading to confrontations. The rival groups accused each other of being used.

Mobs call for Kimaiyo, Lenku sack

From Page 1 The pro-Government group claimed the protesters were being sponsored to cause chaos as the anti-establishment camp accused their rivals of being used by the Government to silence civil society voices agitating for reforms. As the pro-Government group supported the security heads

saying national security is a shared responsibility, their rivals insisted they will do all that they can to have the two officials sacked, including moving to court. “We shall not rest until these guys quit and let competent people manage our national security matters,” said Tom Oketch. Activist Boniface Mwangi, who was

among the organisers of the protests, accused the Government of trying to shield the two by “sponsoring street children” to derail their protests. He said the recent killings in Kepedo, Mpeketoni, Baringo, Lamu, Mombasa and Mandera should prompt the President Kenyatta to act.The President is yet to return from a four-day state visit to United

Arab Emirates. Calls to have Lenku and Kimaiyo resign have been instigated by the massacre of 28 Kenyans by militants suspected to be members of the AlShabaab terror group. MPs have also threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against Kimaiyo and Lenku. The protesters pledged to work closely with MPs

to ensure the security heads are forced out. Lenku was appointed by President Kenyatta as Interior Cabinet Secretary in May last year. His tenure at the sensitive docket has seen marked by major security lapses that were blamed for last year’s September attack at the Westgate Mall in which terrorists killed 72 people.

Protests in US after jury frees Michael Brown’s killer

The US town of Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in overnight chaos as looters and rioters protested the ruling of a grand jury, which decided not to charge a police officer with the fatal shooting of teenager, Michael Brown. The decision to spare Darren Wilson, the officer who shot an unarmed Brown earlier this year, sparked violent protests among Brown’s supporters and many of the town’s residents. US President Barack Obama held a news conference after the grand jury’s decision was announced, asking protesters to demonstrate peacefully in the streets of Ferguson. The verdict was announced by County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch at around 8:25pm on Monday evening. Within minutes of the announcement by the county top prosecutor, crowds poured into Ferguson streets to protest the decision. Some taunted police, shattered windows and vandalised cars. Several gunshots were also heard. Officers released tear gas and pepper spray to disperse crowds. McCulloch said the jury of nine white and three black jury members met on 25 separate days and heard more than 70 hours of testimony from about 60 witnesses. These include three medical examiners and other experts on blood, toxicology and firearms. He said earlier reports in the incident were found not to be true by the official investigation, such as the report that Officer Wilson stood over Brown’s body and fired the fatal shots into his back. The autopsy revealed Wilson shot Brown to death as the young man walked towards him. After months of reviewing the evidence, the 12 men and women on the jury decided not to bring up any of a handful of possible charges against Wilson, which included first-degree murder, second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and involuntary manslaughter.

Police gave protesters go-ahead

Police allowed demonstrations over insecurity to be held in Nairobi’s Central Business District on condition that the protesters maintain peace. Armed officers were deployed early Tuesday to Harambee House where the protesters planned to hand in a petition to the Office of the President. “Our target and our aim is the

President. He’s the Commanderin-Chief of the Defence Forces. He’s the man who runs this country. So our message is directly to the President,” activist Boniface Mwangi, one of the organisers, said. The group under the banner #OccupyHarambeeHouse has been mobilising support for the protest since Sunday through the social

media. The demonstrators have been demanding for a reshuffle at the Ministry of Interior, the securing of the Kenya-Somalia border and better remuneration for members of the Kenya Police Service. The protests are a response to Saturday’s killing of 28 Kenyans five kilometres from the KenyaSomalia border and rising

insecurity in general. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku and Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, whose sackings the protesters are demanding, have however gone on the defensive saying that under their leadership, more terror attacks have been prevented than have succeeded. “Security is a responsibility of

every Kenyan, not just me. If you don’t report suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, how are we going to win this More on this war?” Kimaiyo story at posted on Sunday following the Mandera bus killings. www.capitalfm.co.ke

Poor economies more optimistic about future than rich Countries Countries with emerging and developing economies like Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, El Salvador, Bangladesh, Nicaragua and Palestine are much more optimistic than rich countries about the future, a study by the Pew research group has discovered. The recent report shows that about 40 per cent of people in Kenya Tanzania, El Salvador and Palestine say their children will be more successful than the older generation. Meanwhile, 50 per cent or more people living in Bangladesh, Nicaragua, Senegal, Ghana and Uganda say their children will

be more successful than the older generation. “This optimism is linked to recent national economic performance,” says the study. “Countries that have enjoyed relatively high levels of growth in recent years also register some of the highest levels of confidence in their children’s economic futures.” As many as 65 per cent of people in advanced economies believe that their children will be worse off than they are. Adults in these first wold countries are under the impression that the youth will have to work harder and struggle more to make ends meet.

Speaking at the inauguration of the National Anti-Corruption Steering Committee on Monday, the AG said many people “look the other way” when individuals they know engage in corrupt deals. He said the recent National Police Service recruitment exercise was an example of attitudes that make the war on corruption difficult to win.

Non-locals flee Mandera fearing terrorist attacks

KILLERS: Al-Shabaab militants at a training camp in Somalia. Inset: Nairobi bound Mandera bus at the spot where 28 people got killed.

Hundreds of non-locals working in Mandera have heeded calls by unions which have demanded that they quit unsafe areas and return to their homes. They claim their houses have been marked ahead of a planned attack and are now camping at the Kenya Defence Forces airstrip in Mandera demanding that they be evacuated. “Camping here gives you a sense of safety because we don’t know when we can be attacked,” one of those camping at the airstrip said today. Most of those fleeing are teachers, construction workers and government staff working in the county. They claim that Al-Shabaab informers had marked their houses ahead of an impending attack. They fears stem from Saturday’s dawn attack in

which militants waved down a bus travelling from Mandera o Nairobi and executed 28 nonMuslim passengers. Most of those killed were teachers. Following the incident, various unions representing workers among them the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have ordered their members to quit their work stations and return to their homes. KDF in a statement have claimed that they later killed about 115 militants believed to have executed the 28 and also destroyed their bases in Somalia. Mandera’s proximity to Somalia and the porous border makes it a soft target for the militants who have claimed responsibility for a number of terror-related attacks on Kenyan soil since 2011.

The gang fled on foot. No arrest has been made. The victim was admitted to hospital in stable condition. State wants confessed pedophile jailed for life A Nairobi court has been asked to jail a self-confessed American pedophile for life. Citing his lack of remorse, state prosecutor Duncan Ondimu in submissions pending the sentencing of Mr. Terry Krieger who has twice pleaded guilty to charges of child pornography, said that the offender “was beyond reform.” “He is a danger to the society at large…he preyed on innocent victims and should be kept in jail for a long time to give him ample time reflect on his despicable actions and seek redemption from his maker,” the prosecutor said. The prosecutor presented two disks as exhibits seized from Mr. Krieger’s house which depict him sexually abusing a boy and a girl aged four years and six years respectively. “This court must send a clear message to the convict and the society that exposing young vulnerable children shall not be tolerated,” the

prosecutor said. He said the victims of Mr. Krieger’s “heinous crimes” are very young children as evidence has clearly shown. “He took advantage of their vulnerability; he preyed on victims like an animal stalking its victim…he never offered protection to the minors. The convict forced his experienced, aging body into that of inexperienced young and subordinate and dependent vulnerable child victims,” he said. The prosecutor said that despite the mitigating factors Mr. Krieger may present before the sentence. The aggravating factors outweigh them. Mr. Ondimu presented evidence that Mr. Krieger had been jailed in America for a similar offence where he served an 11 year jail term. “He was arrested in 1992 by the Rapid Rapids Police Department for child pornography and was jailed

Waiguru: Kibera clean-up has curtailed crime in the area Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru (pictured) has said the ongoing clean-up exercise in Kibra by the National Youth Service and the locals has greatly reduced crime in the area. Speaking today in a breakfast show, Waiguru said the inclusion of the local youth in the exercise has given them alternatives to life other than crime. “About 3000 members of the youth were recruited into Kazi ya mkono (manual work) program, which is a good thing towards inculcating the culture of national service. Since the start of the program insecurity in the region has gone down by 70 per cent,” she said. She also attributed the decline of crime to Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam. Waiguru said the youth, who were recruited into the program, are gaining more life skills while earning a living besides the 30 per cent savings they are making. The minister said the Government will continue training more youths at NYS to give them a better chance of joining other disciplined forces like the Kenya Defence Forces. The number has currently grown to 10,000 from the initial 2,000. The recruits are trained for four

months, offer service for another four month before joining their preferred professions, which take three to four years at the expense of the Government. The massive recruitment is to absorb those who did not meet the cutoff marks into universities and colleges. “The recruitment caters for those with 22 years and below to give them sufficient time to train, serve as well as transition to other professions with ease. It caters for those who were left out by the system,” she said. The CS downplayed reports that Kibera residents are opposed to the program saying the community is receptive and supportive.

a position of power and control over the vulnerable children…the seriousness of the offence is compounded by the age of the victims, the prosecutor said. A lawyer representing Mr Krieger will present his mitigation November 27.

AP caught pants down with a minor An Administration Police officer is behind bars after he was caught allegedly having sex with a 14-yearold girl in Kiharu, Muranga County. The girl’s mother caught the officer following days of suspicion that he had been luring the daughter who recently sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations. “The officer had asked me to fetch water for him. He then slept with me but my mom knocked on the door after a few minutes,” the hapless teenager told reporters. The mother raised alarm and a crowd soon gathered wanting to lynch the police officer. The cop however escaped after the chief and local MCA arrived and urged the crowd to wait for police officers who came and arrested their comrade. “The crowd was charged and in fact there was fracas prompting officers to fire in the air. But the suspect has been taken to the police station together with the girl and her mother,” area chief John Karumba said.

Chaos rock US city after grand jury fails to indict in teenager murder Chaos marked by violent clashes between civilians and police rocked Missouri in the US after a judge refused to charge a policeman over the death of an unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. Announcing the decision, state prosecutor Robert McCulloch said the jury exhaustively examined evidence. Mr. Brown’s family said they were “profoundly disappointed”. Shots were fired, and cars and buildings burned. Michael Brown, 18, was killed by Darren Wilson in Ferguson on 9 August. His death sparked weeks of demonstrations. Late on Monday, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the police department in Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis. They followed on radios and mobile phones as Mr. McCulloch made a statement explaining the decision. The prosecutor said that the jury’s job had been to separate fact from fiction, and that some witness statements had been contradicted by physical evidence. “These grand jurors poured their hearts and soul into this

process,” he said. Outside the police department, Mr. Brown’s mother burst into tears as the decision was made public. Some in the crowd began throwing objects at a police line. Shortly afterwards shots were fired, and protesters were seen vandalising police cars, at least one of which was set on fire. Police responded with smoke and tear gas to try to disperse the crowd. Footage from the scene showed firefighters tackling a large blaze and heavy black smoke at a retail building, with reports

of a pharmacy and a pizza shop also on fire. Several other buildings have been broken into and looted. President Barack Obama has appealed for calm asking the residents to accept the court decision. It is an “understandable reaction” that some Americans will agree and others will be made angry by the decision to not indict Wilson, Obama said Monday night. “First and foremost, we are a nation built on the rule of law, so we need to accept this decision was the grand jury’s to make,” he added.

Entrepreneurs cashing in big making custom school bags School doesn’t have to be boring. Neither does a school bag. A group of young entrepreneurs is eking out a living and beating unemployment making customized children’s school bags. Claire Njoroge and her team ventured into this bag-making business after realizing they could add some life and excitement into school bags. “We saw the need to bring some fun into school bags by adding cartoon characters along with the child’s name on the bag,” said Claire. Claire says the bags come in different shapes and sizes to meet the needs of kindergarten, primary, high school and even college students. She reveals that of late there has been a growing demand for customized travelling bags, laptop bags and ladies handbags. “Clients can choose a cartoon character or a design of their choice. Our work is simply to download the images and print them on the back,” she added. The school bags are first made without any designs and cost Sh1,000. Customizing the bag with a name and cartoon requires an extra Sh300. She reveals that different materials are used to meet the preferences of clients. “The school bags come in a jeans material or khaki. The hand bags are made of kitenge or faux leather,” said Claire. Claire reveals that it takes up to four working days to complete one bag and clients are expected to make a down payment of Sh400 to 600 depending on the type of bag.

Thousands of jobs can be created and millions of shilling pumped into the economy every year by exporting mattresses and cushions, numbers from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and the Export Processing Zones (EPZ) Authority have revealed. A statement from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) reads that the furniture sector in Kenya is “not well developed to its full potential and there are prospects to expand the use of modern technology for increased furniture production.” It adds that many saw millers in Kenya combine the process of timber production with the manufacturing of furniture. Most companies in this sector are either in the small or informal sector. This means that local artisans are likely to benefit from the export of these goods, as long as they are able to produce enough items at any given time. If the sector receives support from private investors and the government, the association argues that it is likely to support 50,000 direct jobs and an estimated 300,000 indirect ones, which had been lost during an anti-logging campaign about 15 years ago. Kenya’s exported mattresses, articles of bedding and similar furnishings were worth over $7.9 million (Sh712 million) in 2005. The value of exports has since risen and fallen over the years but has managed to maintain a steady value of no less than Sh451 million. In 2010, the value of these exported goods was worth $6.2 million (Sh559 million).

NAIrobI NIghT lIfe: How to have a blast on a tight budget

I

t is 11pm. The night life in Nairobi is waking up from its slumber. Clubs begin to pump music to attract revelers. Girls are strutting in their towering heels and mini skirts, braving the biting cold, while the boys stay swagged up and warm in their sneakers and jeans. Welcome to Nairobi’s nightlife. Kenya has been declared a drinking nation and efforts to contain this through the infamous Mututho laws have hitherto yielded little success—The clubbing business is booming. What is even more lucrative is the wines and spirits business, which saves the frequent guzzler some few shillings due to the relatively cheaper prices of the brown bottle. Lately, one of the biggest factors in determining whether a club is a hit or miss is the price of alcohol. In these hard

economic times, every shilling counts, and revelers would literally abandon your club for anther which has cheaper drinks prices. It is a cut throat industry and only the fierce and brave will survive. Revelers have gotten smart. Those who do not want to end up raving the night away at dingy joints in downtown, which are mostly dens of thieves in disguise, now get creative in their quest for a good time. With Sh2,000, it is possible to have a ball in Nairobi— It just requires some little creativity, street wisdom and cost sharing. Common practice dictates that before hitting the clubs, party enthusiasts pass by their trusted wines and spirits, down a bottle of vodka or other hard liquors then head to the clubs. It makes sense because it saves a decent amount, which could have been spent at the clubs. A 750 ml

bottle of Gilbeys or Smirnoff red at the wines and spirits shops goes for about Sh1,100 while VAT 69 Scotch sells at Sh1150. Neighborhood joints are an affordable way of drinking without pronouncing a death sentence on your wallet. A bottle of beer goes for Sh150 and food is affordable. The only thing lacking is the class and finesse of uptown clubs. In addition, the estate joints are a good bet especially because they save on money which could have been used on cabs as they are just usually located within staggering distance. When you are really low on cash, hop in to the local joint and have a blast. Uptown clubs host themed nights with the sole purpose of attracting and maintaining clients. They also have happy hours so if you do not mind being an early bird, the happy hour is your best bet. Happy hours have enticing offers like buy a given number of drinks to get another free or attractive discounts on selected drinks. Shisha is quickly gaining popularity in Nairobi. All they have to do is look pretty and men will be pouring drinks in a bid to woo them. “I usually just carry cab money when going out and once I am in a club, the drinks just don’t stop flowing. Men are generous and want to impress us women,” giggles Nell Gatheru, a student at KCA University. It is possible to have a good time in Nairobi with a tight budget of Sh2,000. It is not about how much you have in your pocket but what you can do with what you have. Get your closest friends on board, share the bills and brace yourselves for an epic pocket-friendly night. ourroots The curse of cheating among the Taita Children born out of wedlock have rocked the marriages of many prominent people, including celebrities— sometimes forcing others to hospitals for paternity tests. Among the traditional Taita community, if a woman was suspected of having given birth to a child as a result of an affair, they sought divine intervention from seers. The seers were trusted in their deliberations and there was no questioning of their findings. Mwabili Mchara says during the exercise, a goat was slaughtered in the presence of elders in what they called Kulaghua wula and the intestines were subjected to a ritual by the diviner. Once it is established the woman played foul, she was immediately sent packing. She went to her maternal land and her parents were required to come and beg for forgiveness on her behalf. Even after the apology, the elders decided on her off time before she could reunited with her husband only after a cleansing ceremony. The baby was presumed to be innocent and, therefore, not punished. It (the baby) was referred to Mchea Mbai (One from outside or one from a passerby). If the seers confirmed that the husband was the actual father to the child, he was punished for falsely accusing his wife of infidelity. This attracted a fine of seven goats and seven pots of local brew to be shared between the parents and elders of the two sides.

n the past, Akala (shoes made form tyres) were a reserve for Rastafarians and slum dwellers. You would spot a rasta man literally walking in tyres as the sandals had undergone minimal refinement. The only design work the sandals claimed was adornment with the famous red, yellow and green rasta colour beads. The sandals attracted such clientele due to their durability and affordability. A pair could last a lifetime without getting worn out. Fast forward to recent times and Akala is the in thing. Almost everyone has at least one pair in their closet. They are comfortable and fit for the rough Kenyan roads which are a death sentence to soles. Due to advanced technology and creativity, they are not as hideous as they used to be in the past. Remove

that unpleasant image of thick blocks of tyres for soles and replace them with comfortable thin leather finished sandals for your walking pleasure. For one Micheal Karuri, Chief Designer at Eco sandals, Akala sandals were his ticket out of poverty. He has made the once boring shoe trendy with cutting edge designs and intricate bead work. He says his passion to empower not only himself but many youth in the Korogocho slums made him venture into the noble business. “The youth have to get creative and stop waiting to land lucrative white collar jobs. They should learn to engage their inner creativity and strive to solve the incessant unemployment problem instead of being the problem,” he said. A maestro in his own right, Karuri skillfully designs the sandals in record time. He has

mastered the art and it takes him a mere 30 minutes to design men’s sandals and almost a day to compete women’s sandals due to the intricate beadwork. His creativity knows no bounds and he has ventured into wedge heeled sandals to keep up with the latest fashion! What really makes Eco sandals stand out from the others is the level of craftsmanship. Unlike the traiditional Maasai sandals, Eco sandals have an extra layer of material between the sole and leather to enhance comfort. The leather used is also of high quality. “At Eco sandals we strive for excellence. We depend on word of mouth advertising hence we have to make good products for us to stand out from our competitors,” he beams. While a normal sandal would retail at Sh500 maximum, an Eco

sandal will set you back Sh900. Karuri credits this to the fact that the intricate bead work is outsourced and the quality of leather used is the best. In addition 80 per cent of the sandals are hand made in unique designs. “Our sandals will guarantee you value for money and unmatched service. The fact that we sell our shoes abroad is testimony in itself of our promise to deliver quality goods,” said an ecstatic Karuri. The future of Eco sandals is bright. The company has already bagged international and local awards including the highly coveted Jefferson award for Online Shantytown Development in 2003. The company has also partnered with global apparel firm, Levi Strauss and Company to help in its marketing endeavors.

They choose to see and believe what they want. They overlook their partners’ faulty ways, and some become accomplices or stay with them hoping they will change. “Love makes people do crazy things and that is why some tolerate abusive relationships clutching on hope of redemption,” said Peter Mungai. Betty Bayo distanced herself from her husband Pastor Victor Kanyari after his fraudulent deeds were unveiled. She alleged that she was unaware of her husband’s treachery. Many believe she was in the know but she refuted the claims saying she was in the dark all along. Others said she was privy to everything but decided to jump ship when his cloak was blown off. Staying by the side of, for instance a robber, may not be merely out of love but for lush trappings that come with the kill. That because

It is sickening when those interests turn out to be crude. Human beings are complicated and can do despeakable things in the name of love. They can take in so much that it is hard to bet on the level of their humaneness. June Munene suggests it could be the reason why women drift towards bad boys. “They cut across as scruffy, sexy

Their relationship has been tumultuous and today Quincy is facing murder charges in Australia over the death of their son. Carole Lieberman, a clinical psychiatrist and author of Bad Boys: How We Love Them, How to Live with Them, When to Leave Them, says:“The main reason women are attracted to bad boys is because of the relationship they had with their fathers, when they were little girls, that made them feel unlovable, not good enough to attract a prince. So they end up kissing a lot of frogs. Other issues play a part, but the main fundamental, underlying, most important issue is their relationship with their dads.” “However much I love someone, there must be a boundary to what I can handle, and keeping up with a criminal is not my portion,” said Annabelle Mutuko.

A high school teacher has been killed just a few metres from her house. Nobody saw or heard anything and the victim died instantly. All the killer leaves are copper coins from the eighties that are so new they look like they have just been minted. Soon, bodies start appearing everywhere. Nobody sees anything and no evidence is found at the crime scene. The victims have nothing in common and the killer, now known as Copperhead, does not seem to have a pattern that can determine where he will strike next. Security docket needs decisive heads, not tough talk A recent survey that placed Kenya at number three on the African list of countries that have been worst affected by terrorism must prod the Government to act instead of tough talk (Kenya among Africa’s favourite terror targets November 24, 2014). Placing Kenya behind Somalia,

which is a failed state, means Kenya is on the way to socioeconomic ruin. Terror actives along the coast have spelt economic doom as tourists shy away from the region. Britain has given a travel advisory to citizens after the Mandera massacre. With the risk of other

countries likely to advise citizens against travelling to Kenya, the recovering economy may slump further. Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku recently visited Israel, one of the worst country affected by terrorism. But Israeli airports are

some of the busiest. Whatever he witnessed in Tel Aviv should prompt him to take action. Kenyans are tired of press briefings glorifying security operations whose fruits are hardly evident. The media should independently report the successes without the

Government calling them for briefings. If some individuals manning the security docket are incompetent, they should be replaced. Injecting fresh blood into the positions may lead to better results. Retaining them as terrorists continue to wreak havoc is not the wisest decision.

Messi scores 253rd history books goal Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is “the greatest player in football history”, says president Josep Maria Bartomeu. The Argentine, 27, is the all-time top scorer in Spain’s La Liga with 253 goals after a hat-trick in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Sevilla. Bartomeu said: “We’ll have Leo here for many more years. We are delighted with what he has achieved. “We knew the record was going to come. It made me very happy to see him equal

it, for him and for the club.” The four-time world player of the year has scored 368 goals in total for Barcelona, his only senior club, and 45 for Argentina. Messi - who is also the joint top scorer in Champions League history with 71 - had recently said his future was “complicated”, but his father played that down soon afterwards. Bartomeu said: “There are no words to describe what he is doing. He is happy at

Barcelona, where he has been for so many years, and he gets on well with his team-mates. “He’s concerned about nonsporting issues but the club is supporting him. People should speak to him about football rather than other things.” After the game, Barca head coach Luis Enrique said he thinks Messi will extend the record, which had previously stood since 1955, so much it will become “unreachable” for anyone else.

SMILEY BEAM: Dennis Kimetto takes first place at Tokyo Marathon in a course-record 2:06:50. Inset: Dennis Kimetto after he became the first man to run the marathon in under 123 minute

Kimetto’s ripe for Beijing and Rio

World marathon record holder Dennis Kimetto is ready to race for Kenya at next year’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Kimetto made history in September when he became the first man to finish a marathon faster than two hours and three minutes, clocking

2:02:57 in Berlin in only the fifth marathon of his career. Virtually unknown at the time, he burst on to the scene in 2012 when he was second to Geoffrey Mutai at the 2012 Berlin Marathon and went on to win two other World Marathon Majors races in 2013 – all IAAF Gold Label events in Tokyo and Chicago.

He won the latter in 2:03:45, just 22 seconds outside Kipsang’s then world record. He now targets to represent Kenya next year and the year after. “I am looking forward to it, representing your country at that level is a special thing,” said Kimetto. Kimetto’s record immediately sparked a rash of speculations about

one of the sport’s last remaining iconic barriers: the sub-two hour marathon. For Kimetto, it’s less a question of if the barrier will be broken, than when. “Yeah,” he said, bluntly when asked if it was possible. “I believe if they train very hard someone will be able to do it. It’s all about the training.

“With good preparation you can do any time you want. If you’ve done the training and are prepared mentally, it can be done. “I saw the record in Berlin as a blessing because no one expected me to win,” said Kimetto who was beaten by France’s Renaud Lavillenie for World Athletes of the Year for 2014 on Friday.

The 23 year-old Karan’s show was a repeat of Kisumu Rally last month where he

Karan made his racing debut with a retirement at the RSC Formula Club Series (FCS) rally in Kiambu in March and has since recorded a 100 per cent finish record since making his debut in Kiambu in April. He wrapped up a credible season with a 9th overall position in the main KNRC class won by mentor Baldev Chager. Journalist Morgan urges Arsenal to dump Wenger Journalist Piers Morgan (pictured) believes it’s time Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger left the club and has backed Jurgen Klopp as a replacement. “At what point do Arsenal fans wake up, smell the cappuccino and say enough. the KNRC Division Two. Eric Bengi won the 2WD Class in Guru Nanak but had to play second fiddle to Varese who won the championship for the third time. Karan, a former East African 85cc class motocross champion, has hinted he may join the “EVOX craze” next year in a bid to secure a reputable overall KNRC position. In 6 KNRC rallies that Karan started, he has racked up four top10 positions in the main KNRC class. “To have won two championships at the

end of the season is a lot more than I expected when I initially started racing. There’s a healthy amount of competition within the rally fraternity and to be ranked where I am today is a great achievement for myself and my co-driver Tauseef. “It is down to the driver and his level of skill and discipline. It’s about how you approach each rally and that’s the most important thing. However what happens in our car during rallies will remain a secret,” Karan said.

Ligament tear rules Reus out until 2015 Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus will be out until January after tearing ligaments in his right ankle during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Paderborn. The 25-year-old missed Germany’s World Cup win with an ankle problem and then, after starting the season, missed seven Dortmund games with a

similar injury. Reus tweeted: “I’ll be back again! Thanks for all your lovely messages wishing me to get better soon.” Dortmund chairman HansJoachim Watzke said: “How much bad luck can you have?” He had to be taken off on a stretcher in the 67th minute after the former Dortmund

Exit shivers for City as Bayern knock

Manchester City’s misfiring Champions League displays have left them in a mood to finally make amends when Bayern Munich visit on Tuesday evening. City find themselves on the brink of failure as the German giants visit Etihad Stadium. The Manchester team have no wins and only two points from four group

games and are bottom of group E. “It is a positive anger,” said Manuel Pellegrini, the City manager, when asked about a Group E campaign that has yielded two points and serial disappointment. Once again, having twice fought back from seemingly hopeless positions to win the Premier League in recent

seasons. Loss will force City out of Europe’s elite club for another season as demands of progress by the club’s Abu Dhabi hierarchy grow against an alarming regression. City fought back from a goal down against Swansea to claim three points which retained a distant pursuit of league leaders Chelsea.

Di Matteo: I’m not thinking about revenge

F

ormer Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo says he is not motivated by revenge as his Schalke side prepare to host the Blues in the Champions League. Di Matteo, 44, won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 but was sacked six months later. “I spent many years there, but this is no time for sentimentalities, I want to beat Chelsea,” he said. “We will focus on our work, nothing else. I have no thoughts of revenge.” Di Matteo made 175 appearances for the Blues between 1996 and 2002 - winning the FA Cup twice - before his short stint as manager two years ago. He took charge of Schalke last month and has a 100% home record. The German side can draw level on points with Group G leaders Chelsea with victory on Tuesday. “Honestly, I am not thinking about 2012 that much. I am a person who looks forward, not backwards, I live in the present even though lots of people keep reminding me of that final,” Di Matteo

said. “Chelsea have not lost a competitive game this season and have huge quality in their squad. “Everything must click for us, we have to have a super day to beat them.” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho refused to discuss Di Matteo, with his focus on qualifying for the knockout stage and avoiding the Europa League. While Liverpool and Manchester City have struggled in their Champions League groups this season, two points from Chelsea’s final two games will ensure a place in the last 16. “If we lose two matches we will end up in the Europa League,” Mourinho, 51, said. “So we have two matches to qualify, but we have so many matches in December, if we can avoid the pressure of a final match it would be very good for us. “If we don’t, we have the last game against Sporting Lisbon to do it. To go to the Europa League would be very bad. Evolution is better when you play in the best competitions against the best teams.”
