Robbers burn woman with iron box in Runda Estate during overnight attack

MPs have yet again set themselves on a collision path with Kenyans after they started debate on a Bill that will ensure they continue earning salaries even if they are voted out. In the Parliamentary Societies Bill 2014, the MPs have introduced fresh proposals in which all former MPs expect to be paid at least Sh89, 000 monthly stipend. Eldas MP Adan Keynan, who sponsored the Bill, argues that former lawmakers find it difficult to cope with life outside the House of privileges, opulence and splendour. The benefits, Keynan argues, will allow them continue with ‘normal life’. “Mr Speaker it has become very difficult for such members to feel part and parcel of the ordinary civilian population and their employment prospects are greatly reduced. It has become psychologically difficult for such members to adapt to life outside Parliament. As a result, there are stories of ex-members and their partners suffering from psychological breakdown, many divorce rates, heart attacks etc,” Keynan argues. P4

Robbers burn woman with iron box in Runda estate A woman is admitted to hospital after she was burnt and tortured by an iron box in a robbery in Runda estate, Nairobi. The woman was in her house with her husband when a gang broke in last night and demanded money. Police say the gang grabbed unknown amount of money and jewellery and demanded more which they believed the woman had. In the process, they connected an ironbox to power and used it to burn the woman in the back as they demanded more cash. Police say the gang of four later escaped after “getting what they wanted.” No arrest has been made so far.

Kenya and Kenyans must address gender violence. Now!

ourstand

O

ver recent weeks the fabric of Kenyan society has appeared as if it is beginning to unravel. Many of us have witnessed the appalling attacks on our ladies by, let’s be honest, primitive men with perverted agendas. Violence against women and children is unacceptable, it is not a debate, it is a fundamental truth. Those with ingrained misogynistic tendencies have been either so cunning or indeed so outright stupid to think that it is a debate that coincides with how one chooses to dress. Let us be very clear, it is not.

Violence is unacceptable. Violence is criminal. Violence is a tool used by a weakling masquerading as strong. X News, as you know, does not carry editorials. We have a deep distrust of the establishment telling us what to think. We don’t trust the ageing politicians who traded Kenya’s youth for personal gain. We don’t trust the ‘gun for hire’ political analysts. We don’t trust the business writer who supplements his wage with kickbacks. This issue, however is something that we believe we must take a

stand on. We also believe that you, our loyal X News reader, would care about the violence directed toward your grandmother, mother, sister and daughter. We want to encourage discussion to assist in protecting all Kenyans from violence, but most particularly the vulnerable. Amnesty International has promoted the ’16 Day’ Campaign. What can be done? We don’t have all the answers; we don’t even have all the questions. We will be dedicating time and space to this discussion for the duration of the campaign.

Our colours have been changed as a sign of commitment to the cause and respect for the victims of gender violence. Please engage on social media using the hashtags #16days #x254 with your questions, answers and ideas and contact us via news@x-news.co.ke or twitter @XNewsKenya. Many of your comments will be published, tell fellow Kenyans what you think. Do something. Do anything. Make a stand. Now.

More pay for MPs if Kenyans reject them FROM PAGE 1

But the fresh proposals have already ignited sharp opposition from civil society groups who have vowed to oppose the Bill. “The new demands are just outrageous. We find it very appalling to see MPs demand more money be allocated to them when serious issues like national security are left unfunded,” Moris Odhiambo (pictured right), who heads the National Civil Society Congress, said. A majority of members present when debate on the motion kicked off yesterday expressed support for the demands to have the National Treasury ignore crucial fiscal responsibilities to suffering Kenyans so that they can earn the benefits. “Members need help, not only former MPs but also sitting ones. They are also need counselling because they are exposed to stressful situations,” said Kanduyi’s

Wafula Wamunyinyi. Others who supported the Bill include Chris Omulele (Luanda) Jimmy Angwenyi (Kitutu Chache North) George Oner (Rangwe) and Nominated MP Isaac Mwaura. Mwaura said there is need for MPs who are rejected by voters “to give back their expertise to the society while living decent lives.” Keynan claims there is “a hanging suspicion on former MPs and there is therefore need to advance

benefits to them.” “If you are a lawyer, you will not get clients. If you are a doctor, patients will not come to you. We want to professionalise the work of MPs and remove that criminal perception,” he said. The new plot means the lawmakers are scheming to by-pass the Salaries and Remuneration Commission which is constitutionally mandated to determine the benefits of State officers. The civil society groups have threatened to organise taxpayers into rejecting the fresh pay demands from among the highest paid group in the world. “We are greatly disappointed by the MPs because they want to milk the common man dry. We will definitely organize people to say no to their schemes in a big way,” Odhiambo said. Last year, the activists led a

big protest dubbed “Occupy Parliament Reloaded” to protest against MPs’ move to increase their salaries. Kenyan MPs are ranked the second-highest paid lawmakers in the world and earn higher perks than their counterparts in developed economies of US, Britain and Japan. A study by UKbased Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shows a Kenyan MP’s basic pay, which excludes allowances, is 76 times Kenya’s GDP per capita of Sh84,624. They earn a basic salary of Sh6.39 million per year but Kenya’s per capita income is much lower than that of rich countries. The exorbitant pay has distorted Kenya’s public sector remuneration where the minimum wage for skilled labourers such as gardeners, messengers and watchmen is pegged at Sh8,579 per month.

One in three Kenyans blames Government for income inequality More than one Kenyan out of every three blames the government for the large income disparity between the rich and the poor, a socio-economic study by Pew Research has revealed. The rest blame the gap on the poor payment of workers and general laziness. When asked the question “What is the most important reason for the gap between the rich and the poor in our country today?” 36 per cent of Kenyans blamed poor government policies. But Kenya is not alone as nine out of 25 countries surveyed blame their governments for social class inequality in their countries. In Ukraine, India, Lebanon,

China, Tunisia, Turkey and Nigeria, more than 38 per cent blame the government. Meanwhile, most Latin Americans, including people from Brazil, Chile and Colombia, say that poorlyestablished workers’ salaries are to blame for income inequality. They agree that inadequate take-home pay is the reason for the gap between the rich and poor. Many people from the Palestinian territories, Bangladesh, Senegal and Uganda say both the government and wages are the culprits. What is surprising is that in Nicaragua, 31 per cent of working adults say laziness is the problem.

NEW CREDIT WINDOW: Jua Kali artisans in Nairobi. Kenya’s unbanked population can take advantage of an SMS application project that will determine their credit-worthiness while applying for loans.

App tells if unbanked Kenyans can get loans Kenya’s unbanked population expect a boost from a unique SMS application project that will determine their credit-worthiness while applying for loans. InVenture, a US based tech company, has unveiled plans to launch InSight that targets unbanked households and smallscale businesses. The system is expected to generate credit scores that can be used to access loan services from InVenture’s financial partners. Users text basic income and expenses to

the InSight application after which they will receive a profit and loss statement. The data can be used to create credit scores for users. Director of Policy and Communication at InVenture Patrick Furlong said other data, such as users’ public records or referrals from micro-lenders may be used to determine their credit scores. He said since its inception in 2011, the application has been successful and garnered many downloads.

“We launched the application in India in 2011 with more than 10,000 users. We plan to break into the Kenyan market and target a bigger user base by partnering with local mobile phone micro-finance company, Musoni,” said Furlong. Furlong said the application will be a first in Africa. It hopes to win more users as the app provides users with alternatives to obtaining credits from the government and other financial institutions.

UK parents stress after popular doll Elsa sells out Parents in United Kingdom are in panic after a popular doll, Elsa, sold out stores and shopping websites. The Frozen Snow Glow Elsa doll is fashioned from the lead character of Disney movie, Frozen. The interactive toy sings, speaks phrases from the movie when its magical snowflake necklace is touched and its

dress lights up. Its demand has overwhelmed stores, who have been unable to keep up with it. Popular toy stores like Toys r Us and Argos have listed it as unavailable. In a bid to keep their children happy over the festive season, parents have turned to e-bay. The doll is being sold for as much as

£79.99 (Sh11, 304), a profit of 130 per cent for dealers. The price of the doll’s merchandise like dressing up outfits, jigsaws and frozen toddler doll have also gone up given its demand. Sales of the doll have hit an all-time high that they have already beaten the sale record set by the doll Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story movie.

Thriving middle class drive tissue paper sector growth The thriving mid-income earners are driving growth of the tissue paper industry. Meanwhile, low income earners can barely afford most of the items, a new research has revealed. Researchers at Euromonitor International say the tissue paper sector has witnessed “good sales growth, benefiting from ongoing expansion in Kenya’s midincome group, particularly in urban areas.” A growing number of consumers can afford the

products and can afford a range of tissue items. These include wet wipes, serviettes and paper towels. the items were once considered an unnecessary luxury. The research shows consumers are increasingly focused on hygiene and convenience and have since increased purchases of the products. But the researchers say sales “continue to be constrained by widespread poverty.” They say toilet paper is still

the most common sanitary product in the sector and is often being used for a range of retail tissue applications due to its low price. Multinational companies are leading in the sales of retail hygiene products, with leading players being Proctor & Gamble and Kimberly-Clark. “With consumers remaining focused on cost, these trends are expected to particularly benefit affordable toilet paper,” the experts say.

KENYAN FASHION INDUSTRY FINALLY COMING OF AGE

T

he last couple of weeks has seen fashion events in abundance and most are promoting authentic Kenyan styles. The growing number of fashion lovers in the country could be seen as a sign that the once largely ignored industry has finally found its place, a statement that acclaimed fashion designerAulgah Nato agrees with. “If you walk around the streets of Nairobi, you will see that people are trying their best to be fashionable,” she said. “You will notice that they are keeping up with the latest trends—and this fashion conscious people include men.” But it is not just with the latest trends, they are also

This is in contrast to some time back when buying a dress at a fancy store was good enough for many. Western fashion seems to have taken a back seat and Kenyan fashion is now firmly on the driver’s seat. Fabrics like Ankara, Leso, Kitenge and Maasai shuka have become a hit, even raising eyebrows abroad. But has Kenyan fashion found its identity in the world arena too? “Not yet but we are getting there,” said Solomon Sudi, the Managing Director of the

Nairobi Fashion Week. “If I saw a woman on the streets wearing a dress made from Kitenge, I would not say for sure that this is a dress made in Kenya and by this designer.” However, Sudi says that Kenyan fashion has found a voice abroad. People now recognize that the country has so much to offer in terms of fashion thanks to the designers that have been showcasing at international platforms like the African Fashion Week in London. “The recognition of the Kenyan fashion abroad has led to the appreciation of some of our fabrics, like the Masaai shuka and leso, that we are now known worldwide,” said Sudi. Fashion designers, especially up and coming ones, have benefited

from the various fashion events around the country. Events like the Nairobi Fashion Market and Nairobi Fashion week are a great way to familiarize the public with the designers and their latest collections. People abroad travel into the country just to attend the events so it would be safe to assume that they have played a major role in boosting the Fashion Industry. But Diana Opoti, Kenya’s selfmade fashion icon, does not think so. “Those that organize such fashion events, recognize that the consumer has an appetite for fashion thus they are in it for profit but not for the aim of promoting Kenyan fashion,” she said.

“Take the example of the Nairobi Fashion Market, there was actually more Asian imports on sale compared to Kenyan-made products. Had it been an event only dedicated to promoting the Kenyan fashion industry then what would have been on sale would have been only Kenyan brands made in Kenya, by Kenyans,” she said. Opoti does not overlook the importance of the events in giving designers a platform to showcase their designs but still questions who benefits more from the events— the designers or the founders of the events? No matter the setbacks and the late blooming it seems the Kenyan fashion industry is finally matured and can only get better.

ver the last two weeks, Social media has been inundated with videos of women being stripped naked and sexually assaulted, and one of a nanny brutally beating a child. The videos have been shared widely on Facebook, blogs, WhatsApp and other social media platforms. While we all know that news on social media travels fast, it is disturbing to see how insensitive the world has become especially where brutality and assault is involved. A bigger debate has taken up airwaves with popular radio stations and personalities throwing in their two cents. The bigger question, however, is, is it still ok to keep forwarding such videos? Most people feel that sharing the videos is an avenue for people to be informed about what is happening and get agitated to take action. The first time a stripping video surface, people got agitated alright, a protest was organised when the first video surfaced. However, people are still sharing the videos online. Is it helping? Two Kenyatta University brothers were among the superstars in the justconcluded Climate CoLab 2014 conference challenge in the US. Stephen Osero and Shadrack Osero’s project was selected among the best 34 groups with workable climate change solutions. The brothers’ project involved turning human dung into cooking gas as a solution to environmental degradation, especially in high density residences in the city where sewerage services remain a challenge. “Mostly we want to work with places where we have large populations, where you can get high accumulation of those wastes. “We want to replicate that idea in the whole country of Kenya,” Shadrack told Reuters news agency. Their alternative cooking gas will reduce reliance on current fuels, which release the carbon responsible for global warming. Their project attracted MIT professors and World Bank officials, who promised to fund the duo’s dream! At least 17 countries participated in the MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts conference.

People aren’t apt to be too sympathetic to your emotional sob story today, so keep it under wraps. Whining will get you kicked off the boat altogether. Today’s energy is teaching you to toughen up. Don’t take it personally.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19

An aggressive approach is exactly what’s called for, and you have the ability to deliver the goods. Trying to do everything yourself may seem like a great idea at first, but you’re better off enlisting help so others can feel involved and you can concentrate on doing a better job on fewer tasks.

taurus Apr 20 - May 20

Your sensitive nature feels alone and vulnerable in this harsh atmosphere, so you might be better off just staying in bed. If you decide to go out, make sure to bring your arsenal. Use your sensitivity to your advantage. Scope out your weaknesses so you’re able to use your energy most efficiently.

gemini May 21 - Jun 21

We need to have more people like you in places of power, Gemini. And don’t feel like it’s out of the question. Today’s astrological weather is helping you find the confidence and physical strength you need to boost your leadership abilities. This is the time to take control of the situation. You can do it!

cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22

The problem with the energy today is that there may be some sticks and stones tossed in your direction. Be on the lookout for such objects. There are powerful forces operating that are charged with emotional aggression. War may break out if you aren’t careful. Try to maintain the peace.

leo Jul 23 - Aug 22

Emotionally, things might get rather tense for you as others tend to demonstrate a selfish attitude, Leo. Selfishness doesn’t always have to be considered a negative. Sometimes it’s healthy and necessary to take a more self-centered stance. You need to take care of yourself at all times.

Put on your armor and get ready to do battle. Others may cower when they look out their window and see what’s going on outside, but you want to jump into the fray. Strong, aggressive emotions are the weapons of the day, and everybody knows that you have quite an arsenal in this department.

libra Sep 23 - Oct 22

Move in for the touchdown today, Libra, and don’t stop until you succeed. Don’t let other people’s insecurities become yours. Have confidence in yourself and the way you behave around others. Just because someone else feels sad doesn’t mean you have to, just to make them feel better.

NCIC should work to address insecurity issues in Northern Kenya The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) should desist from urging workers to leave North Eastern Kenya due to insecurity. It should instead engage the two

levels of government to fix the security nightmare. Service delivery in education, health and other sectors may be crippled by such a move. But the workers are not likely to offer the

services if they feel threatened or become victims. Consultations and advice to the two levels of government and the unions will assure the workers of safety.

Francis Kaparo and his officials are not threatened by anybody. They may not know what it means to live in fear. No one should wait for the killers especially after claims that houses

have been earmarked for attack. Issue warning against mass exodus when all issues are fixed, not when the region has been gripped by tension.

Chess clubs to battle it out in Bungoma

Bungoma will host the Governor’s Chess Championships set for the weekend at the local Chess Club. The two-day event has been sponsored by the county government, Ministry of Tourism, Khetia’s Drapers, Yakomart, Tourist Hotel, County 411 members, Adatia Supermarket and Hotel Elegant. Many players are expected to troop to the

town on Friday where the tournament’s chief arbiter, Bernard Wanjala, is expected to address participants. Wanjala is also expected to conduct draw for the first of the scheduled 7 rounds. Entry fee is Sh1,000. Tournament director Humphrey Nyongesa says they expect more participants than in the inaugural 2011 edition. “Being closer to Uganda, a

strong and great contingent is expected from our perennial rivals and I am most thankful to Governor Ken Lusaka for his support,” he said. The winner of the Open section will take home Sh20,000 and a trophy, second Sh15,000 as the third pockets Sh10,000. The women section winner will get Sh12,000, second Sh8,000 and third Sh7,000.

UK urges Fifa to publish World Cup graft dossier The UK government has asked Fifa to publish the full findings of its investigation into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process. Secretary of state for culture, media and sport Sajid Javid has written to President Sepp Blatter urging Fifa to make public the full report. Fifa has so far published a 42-page summary of the investigation. Javid argues Fifa’s handling of the report “further calls into question their

independence and transparency”. The summary report into alleged corruption regarding the bidding process for the both tournaments was published on 13 November and cleared Russia and Qatar of corruption. US attorney Michael Garcia, who conducted the two-year inquiry, said the report contained “numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations”. Garcia and Fifa’s ethics

judge Hans-Joachim Eckert have agreed to allow the head of Fifa’s Audit and Compliance Committee, Domenico Scala, to access their findings. Scala will then decide whether the full investigation is passed on to Fifa’s Executive Committee, leaving the door open to a possible re-vote. Javid says Blatter and Fifa should make public the full report if the organisation is to restore credibility.

Hamilton, Rosberg relationship gets tougher Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg helped push him to new levels but admits it was tough to make their relationship work. He also had a turbulent time at McLaren in 2007 with team-mate Fernando Alonso. But Hamilton says his 2014 experience with Rosberg was “maybe tougher” after the pair clashed on and off the track. He added: “But you always want to have a fierce competitor, a tough team-mate, because they help you raise your game.” Hamilton, 29, beat Rosberg to the title after months of tension between the

Mercedes team-mates following several controversial incidents. Rosberg and Hamilton have had a fractious relationship after Hamilton’s brake failure in Canada, Rosberg taking a controversial pole in Monaco, the German clipping Hamilton in Belgium, and Hamilton’s “slap in the face” overtake of Rosberg in the USA. But Hamilton says the year ended on a “really respectful note” in Abu Dhabi. A third world championship win in 2015 would take Hamilton level on titles with Ayrton Senna, who won in 1988, 1990 and 1991. Hamilton has maintained the Brazilian driver has been his inspiration in the sport from a young age.

Ulinzi can challenge for title next season Ulinzi Stars Forward Stephen Waruru believes his side’s strong finish to the 2014 Kenyan premier League season is an indication that the 2010 champions will challenge for the title in 2015. The player who picked the second runner up trophy in the Kenyan Premier League player of the year awards last week said his club has what it takes to go for top honours. “The unity that we have established in the season as

a team played a vital role to earn me these accolades. I believe it can only get better in the coming season,” he said. “My target was to score more than 15 goals but I fell short on four. However, I will not so much concentrate on the shortfalls but rather be happy on the good achievements. The target in the squad is to go for the title,” he said. Meanwhile club chairman Col JS Mwinyikai says the

club will not be recruiting civilians to join the military outfit ahead of the 2015 KPL season. Mwinyikai said that the team has enough quality in the military set up that will play for the club and that they will not be signing any players from outside the military set up. “We have enough quality from the military set up to add on to the team and thus picking players from outside will not really happen,” he said.

National cricket coach Steve Tikolo, has opted for youth in the team’s five-match tour of Namibia which began in Windhoek yesterday. Two new call ups Eugene Ochieng and Kavi Dosaja were both named in a 14man squad that left Nairobi on Tuesday morning. They join two more youngsters Gurdeep Singh and Dhiren Gondaria who were part of the Kenya national team that won the Africa Cup in South Africa. “The tour is a good opportunity for some of our youngsters to come in, get first class experience and show what they can do,” Tikolo said ahead of the team’s departure. The youngster had a good season with the ball where he emerged sixth claiming 22 wickets from 96 overs in13 matches. Jadavji Bhimji who was tipped to make it to the team was the highest wicket taker with 33. Shem Obado, his captain at Kongonis who is also included in the squad touring Namibia finished third with 26 wickets. Other member of the team is Nehemiah Odhiambo who was fourth with 26 wickets.

Ochieng didn’t fare badly with the bat scoring 156 runs from 10 innings. Throughout the year, Ochieng has been regular at the national team’s training and impressed which led to his call up. According to Tikolo: “He has shown a lot of improvement time to time.”

Kenya XI that includes most of the national team players with Collins Obuya being the notable absentee in the squad will be using the matches to prepare for the upcoming ICC World Cricket League Division Two matches set for Namibia in January next year.

YOUTHFUL BAT: National cricket coach Tom Tikolo in action. He has opted for a youthful selection in the team’s five-match tour of Namibia which began in Windhoek yesterday.

we demand: Cherangany MP Wesley Korir is spearheading a drive by athletes for a louder voice during AK elections.

Athletes vow to maintain demand for voting rights Athletes have vowed to push Athletics Kenya into agreeing to amend the federation constitution to allow them voting rights in future elections. The athletes, who have coalesced under the Professional Athletes Association of Kenya (PAAK), said

AK constitution has ignored them at all levels and have no power to decide who leads them. They are led by Cherangany MP Wesley Korir and former world marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang. “As we said on Monday, we are

demanding for amendments to the AK constitution to include athletes in deciding who manages athletics in the country,” said Korir. “How can the federation claim they are managing athletes yet we are not part of the election process? We are demanding a change in

the constitution to have a say on shoosing our leaders,” Korir, the association’s spokesperson, said. Kipsang, who is the PAAK president, said the Sports Act stipulates that members and stakeholders in any federation should take part in election

processes. “AK constitution as it is contradicts the Sports Act which grants us powers to participate in the electoral process. The constitution also needs to comply with the other provisions in the Sports Act,” said Kipsang.

Mourinho lauds ‘perfect’ Chelsea

EXCITED: Jose Mourinho has lavished praise on his side’s Champions League title hunt after Chelsea won 5-0 against Group G rivals Schalke.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says his side were “perfect” as they qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League with a 5-0 away win over Group G rivals Schalke. The Blues led 3-0 at half-time after goals from John Terry, Willian and Schalke defender Jan Kirchhoff, before Didier Drogba and Ramires completed the rout in the final 15 minutes. The Premier League leaders are now unbeaten in 19 matches across all competitions. And Mourinho was left

praising their efforts and feels he is delivering a new brand of football to the west London club. “I don’t remember Chelsea playing in this way away from home,” he said. “But this was very impressive. Very complete. I know, because I know the media, probably you are going to say Schalke were not good, they made mistakes, but the reality is any team that played against us would feel it was very difficult. The players played a fantastic match.

“The players are very serious. Everything they do with big focus and ambition, but at the same time with this component, which is quite something new at Chelsea: this happiness, this flair, this beauty. “The way they are doing things, we are very happy. We are having good results and playing really, really well at this moment.” Champions League progression is sewn up and Chelsea have a a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Eubank claims son is the most Onsomu gets first call up as talented boxer since Sugar Ray Treus’ squad rev up for Dubai Impala’s Samson Onsomu has received his first call up to the national 7s side as head coach Paul Treu named his 12 players for the second leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series. The Dubai Sevens will take place on December 5-6th in Dubai. Kenya Harlequin back Dennis Muhanji returns to

the side for the first time since 2010 when he featured in the London and Glasgow legs of the series. Collins Injera, Lavin Asego are not available due to other commitments. Treu said: “One player is getting his first call up, four players are playing their second tournament, Dennis

Muhanji is only playing his third tournament since his last outing a few years ago. We are excited and can’t wait to see the guys play.” “We are hit by injuries, Augustine Lugonzo sustained an injury in Gold Coast and will only hopefully be ready for Wellington. Max Theuri will also be out for a while.

Chris Eubank Sr claims his son is the most talented boxer since Sugar Ray Leonard. Brighton’s Eubank Jr, 25, challenges for Billy Joe Saunders’ British, European and Commonwealth middleweight titles at London’s Excel arena on Saturday. Hatfield’s Saunders, a former Olympian, is the favourite

for the fight, which has had an ill-tempered build-up. “The last person who had this ability was Sugar Ray Leonard,” said Eubank Sr. “My son is the most dangerous young man I’ve ever come across in boxing, the most dangerous fighter on the planet. “I was the benchmark, I was the beacon, I was the one everyone was measured

against. And I can’t even measure him against me. “I have never seen anything like him. The great British public has a great journey in front of them over the next 10 years.” American Leonard, regarded by many as the greatest of the modern era, won Olympic gold in 1976 and world titles in five weight divisions as a professional.

Arsenal through to UCL last 16

TIMELY HIT: Sanchez curls his 57th minute strike between two Dortmund defenders to double Arsenal’s lead. Arsenal beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to book a place in the Champions League knockout stage.

Australia batsman Phil Hughes dies

Australia Test batsman Phil Hughes, 25, has died in hospital, two days after being hit on the head by a delivery during a domestic match in Sydney. Australia team doctor Peter Brukner said he never regained consciousness. Hughes, who also played for Hampshire, Middlesex and Worcestershire, was struck by a short-pitched ball from Sean Abbott. “It’s an understatement to say we’re completely devastated,” said Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland. “The

word tragedy gets used too often in sport, but this freak accident is a real life tragedy.” Australia captain Michael Clarke read out a statement on behalf of the Hughes family at a news conference. Hughes, batting for South Australia, collapsed face first on the ground after being hit by a bouncer from Abbott during a Sheffield Shield game against New South Wales. He had CPR and mouth-tomouth resuscitation at the ground before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where

he had a 90-minute operation to relieve pressure on his brain. Hughes, who had played 26 Tests, made his Test debut at the age of 20 against South Africa in 2009. In only his second match, he became the youngest batsman to post two centuries in a single Test. He played county cricket for Hampshire, Middlesex and Worcestershire and shared in what was at the time a world record 10th-wicket partnership of 163 with Ashton Agar against England in the 2013 Ashes series.

Yaya Sanogo scored his first goal for Arsenal as they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to book a place in the Champions League knockout stage. Liverpool conceded a late equaliser at Bulgarian champions Ludogorets - but are still just a win away from reaching the Champions League last 16. The hosts led when Dani Abalo pounced on Reds keeper Simon Mignolet’s error, but Rickie Lambert headed in his first Champions League goal to equalise. Jordan Henderson steered Liverpool ahead at the far post, before Georgi Terziev headed in the equaliser. Seventy-three seconds was all it took Yaya Sanogo. Well, 18 months, 19 appearances and 73 seconds, but when his first Arsenal goal finally arrived, it was wonderfully timed. Alexis Sanchez made it 2-0 after the break with a superb low curling shot. Sanchez also had a shot pushed away, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain struck the crossbar with a dipping volley. It was a mature performance from the Gunners who, like their opponents, have found solace in this competition this season from the struggles of the domestic league. They quelled the threat of

Dortmund on the counter-attack, with Jurgen Klopp’s side only seriously troubling keeper Emiliano Martinez once, in stoppage time. The Bundesliga outfit had named a strong side despite having secured their berth with four wins from four games but before they had a chance to establish themselves at the Emirates, they were a goal down. That was scored by a player who was the source of some ridicule on social media when the teams were announced before the match. Sanogo’s ungainly style has irked some fans and there was further astonishment when he was named ahead of Germany World Cup winner Lukas Podolski. But he finally managed to temper some of that criticism when he converted his first effort after starting the move with a ball-juggle and backheel to Spaniard Cazorla. With the Germans already qualified and Arsenal almost there, the tempo of the game was sedate at times, although the Gunners picked up the pace after the break. The win moves Arsenal to 10 points in Group D and a victory over Galatasaray coupled with Dortmund losing to Anderlecht in the final round of games would see Wenger’s side go through as winners.
