Police red alert after Nyali barracks attack Police in Coast region are on high alert following Sunday’s simultaneous attacks on a Kenya Army barrack in Mombasa and an Administration Police camp in Malindi. About 20 armed youth attacked Nyali Barracks at the crack of dawn on Sunday, forcing soldiers into fierce fire exchange during which seven attackers were killed. One soldier, who was injured in the attack, died later under treatment. Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa says police are on high alert as National Intelligence officers trail members of the banned Mombasa Republican Congress (MRC). Police said MRC and Al-Shabaab sympathisers may be behind the twin attacks.

Police alert after Nyali attack From Page 1 “We are on high alert at all times and anyone thinking they can take advantage of heavy rains to cause mayhem will meet fierce fire,” Marwa said. In Malindi, another group attacked an AP camp in the town but were
repulsed. Police recovered two cans of petrol which the attackers had planned to use to burn down the post. The attack is reminiscent of the Mpeketoni raids during which similar tactics were used as a local AP camp was torched.
Police have asked all hospital personnel to report any patient with bullet wounds. Meanwhile, no guns have been surrendered in Turkana and Baringo counties barely hours to the 24-hour deadline President Kenyatta set for residents to
surrender all illegally-held firearms to the Government. Bloody attacks at Chesitet and Kapedo villages along the border of the two counties have led to the death of more than 20 officers. President Kenyatta visited the two villages on Sunday and
issued orders for the return of the firearms. He warned that the Government will strike hard against bandits terrorising residents. He also gave residents until today to name the raiders or risk a massive security operation.
11 Chinese corpse merchants arrested
Chinese authorities have arrested 11 people accused of digging up and selling corpses for ghost marriages. In one event, the 11 are accused of having exhumed a buried body for three months and selling it at about Sh268,350. One man involved in the March incident only identified as Wang, said they sold the remains of the woman at a high price because she was buried in January and was, therefore, still ‘fresh’. Wang told the South China Morning Post remains buried for years fetched less while the fresher ones were highly valued. “Years-old carcasses are not worth a damn, while the ones that have just died, like this one, are valuable,” Wang said. The woman’ body is said to have fetched twice its original price after traversing several provinces in China to end at Hebei. In the ghost marriage, a female corpse is buried next to a man who had died single. The practice, which is said to have started in the 17th century, seeks to give the dead man a companion after death. If found guilty, the Chinese law dictates that the suspects face jail terms of up to three years. The law forbids stealing of corpses which is considered an insult to the dead.

Burkina Faso protests rage as civilian rule calls mount Protests continued to grip Burkina Faso even after the resignation of President Blaise Compaore on Friday. The protesters are demanding that the newly installed military government steps aside. The violent demonstrators clashed with security agencies in capital Ouagadougou on Sunday even as regional leaders pleaded for calm. The military took power after
Compaore, who also faced violent protests over his desire to extend his 27-year rule, announced his resignation. But the protesters want an immediate return to civilian rule even as the military tightened its grip. They fired tear gas and shots to disperse the crowds who denounced the power grab. The international community joined in calling for power handover to a
civilian administration. But military bosses have pledged to put in place a transition government amid fears they risk facing economic sanctions. Gunfire erupted in clashes between protesters and security forces near the location of the state news TV channel which the military took over. Both the African Union and the Economic Community of West
African States called for peace and an orderly transition to democracy. President Compaore quit after initially vowing to stay until elections are held in the face of violent protests over his plans to extend his lengthy rule. His decision to step down “opens the necessary political space for all the stakeholders to work together to find a lasting resolution to the crisis facing the country,” the
head of the African Union, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said in a statement. The AU’s Peace and Security Council will meet on Monday to discuss the crisis. Dlamini-Zuma said she prefers an agreement that will lead to a civilian-led transition toward elections for a new government. She called on the military to place themselves at the disposal of civilian authorities.

Linkedin reports profit in third quarter report Social networking service, LinkedIn, has reported profit in its third-quarter reports. The profit was better than expected and has been attributed to many companies using its services to hire staff. Employers find services of the corporate social site more helpful in assessing a potential employee’s suitability for a job. Rapid expansion into international markets such as China is said to have spurred growth for the site. A Chinese language beta version of its main website was launched in February to replicate successes realised in US. “In the third-quarter, about 75 per cent of new members came to LinkedIn from outside US, with China providing particular strength,” said its Chief Executive Jeff Weiner. “China has become the second-largest contributor to new sign-ups on daily basis only after US.” Revenue rose 45 per cent to $568.3 million (Sh50.7 billion), a 61 per cent of the total revenue.
A study by Mercy Kamau, John Olwande and James Githuku of Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy found that affluent families in Nairobi spend Sh1,139 a month on fruits and vegetables. The poorest households spend Sh292 over the period. Kamau and her team grouped the Nairobi households into five based on the amount of cash made and spent. On average, households spend 21 per cent of food budget on fruits and vegetables, they discovered. “The monthly budget on food is about Sh2,799,” said Kamau. “The food budget increases as incomes rises with poor households Sh1,362 and Sh2,080 respectively on food, while in higher income groups spend Sh3,642 and Sh5,014 respectively.” The team also noted that the poorest households, which spent less on the items, had five to six members. The wealthiest, which spent more money on the items, had between three and four members.

Farmers embrace drought-resistant crops Farmers in semi-arid areas, suffering from the bane of unfavourable weather patterns are learning new techniques to beat the harsh conditions. One in particular, has learnt to plant his crops before the rains start and buy seeds suited for the areas climate.
James Mativo from Makaveti Village in Kyanzasu, a sub-location in Machakos County grows green maize using these techniques. “I planted just before the rain season began, to ensure that the crop would sprout when the rains came,” he explained. He recently harvested several bags

Equity posts increase in net profit
Equity Bank has posted 26 per cent increase in net profit in this year’s third quarter ending September. The net profit for the period stood at Sh11.2 billion. The positive results have been attributed to the bank’s increased lending to its large customer base and fees charged on transactions. The earnings were also bolstered by its branches in the Eastern Africa region, mainly Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan, which collectively roped in Sh1billion. The bank increased its lending from Sh171.3 billion in December 2013, to Sh206 billion by September with accruing interest from the lent cash hitting 10.5 per cent. Low income earning customers will enjoy the bank’s low interest rates till the first quarter of 2015.
Tycoon on 30 years jailterm for bad foods A Taiwanese tycoon may face up to 30 years imprisonment after his food industry was linked to large sale of substandard goods. Wei Ying-chung, 57, has faced more than 130 charges after questions were raised over the safety of food from his industry, which is also exported. The 57-year-old Yingchung’s family owns many food processing companies including the China’s household noodles. The businessman got into trouble last month after police raided one of his southern Taiwan factory accused of processing oil using slaughterhouse and restaurant wastes. In his current accusations, Ying-chung is linked to low quality oil laced with animal feeds products.

Mativo buys certified seed, suited to the area’s climate, from Dryland Seed Company in Machakos town. “For these dry land varieties, the first rains are very important,” explains Peter Mutua, a Dry land agronomist. The process of delivering quality seed to farmers takes a team of
experts, working together to ensure that farmers get the best seed suited for the climatic conditions in their locales. The process starts with breeders who develop a substance known as germplasm and share it with their research partners, who pass it on to seed companies.

Celebchat Former Ogopa artiste Avril is making a daring come back. She is releasing a new song today and tells X Access all about music, love and business.
The three parts of How would you describe yourself? I would describe myself in three parts; I describe myself as Nyambura, Avril, and Judith. All these three people have different characters. Judith is a business person who is no nonsense. She is strict and protects Nyambura and Avril. Nyambura is a lovely girl; she is the big sister, daughter and the fiancé. Avril is someone I created to deal with the entertainment industry. Avril is the go getter, she will jump on stage, she is eccentric and the creative. What have you been up to? I have been up to a lot this year. I have been acting and been back to the studio recording. The reason why I have been involved in a lot of acting Is because I met an inspiring lady, Dorothy Ghettuba from Spielworks Media who gave me a challenge to audition

I feel like have grown a lot more this year than I have ever grown in the industry. How has it been being an independent artiste? It was hard when my contract with Ogopa ended. The reason why I took long to release a new song was because I was getting used to the shift. From seeking guidance about everything to having a lot of creative control over all my projects was a bit weird. I am excited but scared at the same time but I have come to terms with it. Who do you look up to in the industry? I look up to the founders to contemporary urban. Amani,

But society will not accept it because you are the girl and you are not supposed to admit that it has only been one or two weeks and you are in love. What is next for Avril? ndrine would not have thought she would be walking down the aisle into the arms of a man she met in a restaurant, through a friend in February of 2012. A man who not only sparked a tender fire within her that day but also stole her heart and eventually proposed to her in knock out twist in August of this year. “I had planned a surprise homecoming party for him after being away on work but tables turned when I was the one surprised by his proposal that same day and time.” The moment was truly hers and she gracefully trode the red floral carpet towards Daniel Mubea, inside Parklands Baptist Church in Westlands. Adorned in an Ethiopian white and emerald green ball gown, Adrine exhibited beauty in the arms of her parents. Her bridal crew were laced in green tailor-made dresses, with an Ethiopian finishing. “Because we are of different mixed cultures, we chose to embrace a foreign theme (Ethiopian),” says Adrine Bacco. The much anticipated moment followed where the pair, oozing love for one another, spelt out personalized vows, promising to be with each other in all times, forever, “even when Arsenal lost”, as the bride teased. After blessings and prayers from family members, the couple headed for a photo-shoot and later joined their guests at the Abboretum grounds for an evening reception.
The reception area was of white decor, with a radiant and attractive ambience that gave the whole ceremony an edge of uniqueness. Adrine and Daniel beamed at the beauty of their evening wedding. “We always wanted an evening wedding with beautiful lighting and this is just as perfect as we wanted it to be,” they intimated to XAccess. Food was delicious and enough for everyone. And as people dug in, some stared, salivating of course, at the blue and white dotted cake that stood in the middle waiting for the perfect moment. When that time came, it was well worth the wait; It was a really tasty and sweet cake. The newlyweds planned their wedding for three months with a budget of Sh1.1million. Daniel is taking his wife on honeymoon to a location that is only known to him. “It is a secret but she will know when the time comes,” he said. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Mubea.

The event always attracts the glamourous, bringing together people from all walks of life. Unlike the previous editions, last Sunday’s had a village setting with three stages; the live performance stage, the DJ stage and the poetry stage. The poetry stage gave a chance to young performers to showcase own compositions and those of their favourite poets. Kwani? was in the house and most notably represented by renowned writer Binyavanga Wanaina, who came well spiffed in a dress and all. For book lovers, there were novels on sale. On the DJ stage, DJ Burn and DJ Jack Rooster were manning the decks, mixing the best of local, afro, hip hop and rock music. But there was no doubt which was the favourite stage; the live performance stage out. Up and coming musician, Cee L was first on stage. He brought the sweet melidious sound of jazz, welcoming people into the event. Next on stage was Mayonde, who brought the event to life. She did
renditions of popular 90s songs from hip hop, reggae to rnb, engaging the crowd with sthe famous hype chant “hey-ho”. S She also performed some of her own songs such as “Have you seen her”. Dela was third on stage and she continued with the spirit, bringing afro-soul to the stage, keeping the crowd on its feet, dancing and singing along to her song. Muthoni the Drummer Queen, was last on stage and as always, she was electric. She performed some of her classics, including “mikono kwenye hewa”, which kept the crowd dancing to some of her reggae tunes and singing along. Despite the power going off during her performance, the crowd kept dancing and singing along in the dark. She also announced that she will launch her new album at the December edition. MCs Patricia Kihoro and DJ Incredible kept the crowd entertained as the next act got ready to get on stage. There was enough fun for everyon. Musical chairs found its way into the program with winner bagging some merchandise from amnesty international.

The much hyped Jameson Concert with 2 Chainz as the main act continued on Saturday night without the rapper. There were performances by Kaligraph and Kristoff with DJ Hassan and DJ Stylez on the decks. It has been announced, however, that 2Chainz will be in Kenya on 12th December and tickets bought for saturday’s event will still be valid for
the concert. Those who want refunds are supposed to claim them through an email by November 30th. What went wrong? Some speculate that the singer was too drunk to board a commercial flight, others say that he feared Ebola. What will make him get on the plane for 12th December that was different from saturday?
Avril thrills the Miss Tourism Kitui Finals avril was in Kitui County this weekend performing at the Miss Tourism finals. The singer kept the crowd on their feet as she performed hit after hit. Her fans did not disappoint when the singer asked one of them to come up to the stage and help her sing Chokoza. Owago Onyiro and Chipukeezy were also at hand to entertain the crowd with their jokes. HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
If you’re in the market for romance, Capricorn, whether with a new partner or rekindling the fire with a current partner, be careful. Small issues could rage out control today. Extreme conditions are likely to occur, thanks to your sensitive emotions combined with a surge of energy from the outside.
aquarius Jan 20 - Feb
cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22
Powerful issues arise in your life that make it difficult to find peace, Cancer. Perhaps your first tendency is to confide in your partner. More than likely, this person is contributing to the difficulties you’re now having. Your best bet is to spend some time alone.
leo Jul 23 - Aug 22
Things may get a bit difficult in your romantic life because of someone in the partnership who isn’t necessarily taking a very realistic approach to the situation, Aquarius. There’s a bit of a power play going on as someone tries to throw their weight around without considering the other person’s feelings.
You may be trying to get to the end of the road too quickly without really enjoying all the steps along the way, Leo. This is especially true when it comes to any sort of artistic project or romantic partnership that you might be involved in at this time. If you aren’t savoring every part of your journey, then perhaps this isn’t the path you should be on.
pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20
virgo Aug 23 -Sep 22
Your creative juices are flowing freely, Pisces, but there appears to be a roadblock. Something or someone apparently doesn’t want you to continue down the path you’re on. Perhaps he or she is scared that you’re going to discover a whole new passion in life that they don’t necessarily agree with.
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19
At the end of the day, you’re the one who has to look in the mirror and know who you are, Aries. Think about this the next time you’re tempted to make a rude comment or spread a displeasing fact about someone else. One side of you may be able to rationalize behavior that the other side simply despises.
taurus Apr 20 - May 20
You may be so emotional that you can’t function, Taurus. That’s love. And even though it can be heavenly, it can also be debilitating. You could deliberate for hours about an issue because you don’t want to make a move without your partner’s input.
gemini May 21 - Jun 21
Will you go out with me? Be careful if a person says yes when you ask that question today, Gemini. You could take the nature of this situation to the extreme. Saying yes doesn’t mean you’re suddenly in charge of his or her life.

When your heart is gently touched, it feels loving, generous, and supportive of everyone, Virgo. If your heart is lonely, it feels deserted by everyone. It would be impossible to try to make sense of why things need to be so extreme for you, but the fact of the matter is that you don’t need to figure it out rationally.
libra Sep 23 - Oct 22
You may be like a giant trying to befriend a small bug, Libra. You have absolutely nothing in common and don’t even speak the same language. With one accidental move, you could easily squash that little bug.

scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21
There is irony in today’s situation, Scorpio. The only real remedy for situations like this is to accept them and joke about it. If you try to take yourself too seriously, especially when it comes to art or romance, you will inevitably fail.
sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21
The hungrier you get, the more determined you will become, Sagittarius. Be careful that your determination doesn’t turn into desperation and neediness. It’s unattractive and will get you nowhere. Keep on the upward spiral, and let determination turn into inspiration and cooperation.

Police reforms must start at recruitment
The repeat of the police recruitment exercise must not be a second avenue for filling stomachs of greedy officers. The process must be fair and transparent for the force to be reformed (Police body to repeat
enrolment of recruits, October 31, 2014). The force has always been cited as the most corrupt institution starting from enrollment to field work. Recruitment involves bribery
where applicants have to ‘buy’ their selection to training. Officers will always work to return what they paid at the entry level. The appetite grows as seniors demand for promotion. As merit gives way to fat pockets,
this kills morale of those seeking to serve the nation. It also allows the rich to rise quickly in ranks. Police reforms have taken a back seat to remain only a dream only on paper. Lazy officers have been allowed to
join the force and rise to command others with little or no qualification. Inefficiency leads to disjointed operations and loss of officers as witnessed during attacks in Baringo, Turkana and Mombasa.

Our KPL title race over, says Kimanzi
Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi conceded the Kenyan Premier League title race defeat after his side drew 2-2 with Thika United at Ruaraka Sports Club on Sunday. The brewers were twice forced to rally from behind to secure a point in a late night clash. Former Tusker striker Michael Olunga struck the opener in the 22nd minute with a volley to hand the milk men the lead. Tusker drew level through former Mathare marksman Jesse Were in the 33rd minute before Wycliffe Opondo restored his side’s lead in the 57th minute. Ismail Dunga evened the scores in the 64th minute. The result left Tusker in third spot with 52 points and pips them out of the title race. Should the brewers win the final match against Sofapaka on Saturday, their campaign will end on 56 points. “Today’s result signifies that we are out of the title race…. there are matches we might look
back and say they were the turning point. We have areas to work on next season,” said Kimanzi. Elsewhere, Mathare registered an easy 2-0 win over Western Stima to swap places with the power men. The win lifted Mathare to 10th position on 37 points as Stima slipped to 11th spot with 36 points. Two goals in three minutes by Daniel Mwaura and Erick Johanna were enough to hand the 2008 champions a deserved victory over Stima. Mwaura put Mathare ahead in the 21st minute after beating Stima’s goalie Stephen Odhiambo before Johanna made it 2-0 three minutes later. At Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, Nairobi City Stars won 1-0 over relegated Nakuru All Stars. But the result may not be adequate for the Kawangware side to avoid the chop going into the final round of matches on Saturday.

Hamilton collected his 10th win of the season following a late move down inside Rosberg at Turn 12, after erasing the German’s lead. The result extends Hamilton’s lead over Rosberg to 24 points with 75 available in
the two remaining races. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo drove superbly to beat the Williams to third. Hamilton’s victory will be another psychological blow for Rosberg, who arrived in Texas admitting he needed “three strong races” to have any chance of beating his team-mate to the title. The Briton looked the quicker of the two through
the practice sessions, but Rosberg took pole position after his team-mate hit trouble with his brakes in qualifying. It was Hamilton’s fifth victory in succession, 10th of the season. This means he has more career wins than any other Briton, passing Nigel Mansell, and has equalled the tally of his great rival Fernando Alonso.

Season’s final whistle decider for KPL title For the second time in two years the race for Kenyan Premier League title will be decided on season finale with Gor Mahia and Sofapaka having optimistic chances of lifting the 2014 title. This follows impressive wins for the two rightful contenders for the 2014 title. Table toppers Gor Mahia, on 57 points, beat Muhoroni Youth 3-1 in Kisumu while at the Mumias Complex, Sofapaka managed a 2-1 victory over AFC Leopards to take the title push to the wire. Going to the final match day that will also see eventual winners of the title being crowned, K’Ogalo and Batoto Ba Mungu are going at it hammer and tongs with only a point separating them. In 2012, then champions Tusker went to the finals match trailing Gor Mahia with 58 points by a solitary point, needleless to revisit the match where Tusker beat Nairobi City Stars 3-0 to retain championships as Gor shuttered to a 1-1 draw with Thika United. Gor will be at home at Nairobi City Stadium on the final match day against KRA while Sofapaka battle Tusker at the Ruaraka
Sports Club. Godfrey Walusimbi opened the score sheet for K’Ogalo in the 21st minute after being put through by compatriot Dan Sserunkuma before Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito and Sserunkuma added the other goals. Muhoroni flattered to deceive to level the scores mid-way through the first half via Enos Ochieng, but it could not trouble Gor Mahia. Gor coach Frank Nuttall was happy with team’s victory urging them to reciprocate similar performance on the final match. “We got the points, it was a huge win and we are fully focused on our next game. We missed chances to score more, but overall it was a good performance,” Nuttal said. At the Mumias Complex, it was more disappointment for Ingwe who suffered a 2-1loss to Sofapaka. Enock Agwanda bagged a brace for Sofapaka with Austin Ikenna pulling one back for Ingwe from the spot after Collins Shivachi handled the ball in the box. His counterpart Sam Timbe once again said his boys showed character in a typically tough encounter.
Kisumu Simba rebrands to Butali Sugar Warriors Lakeside outfit Kisumu Simba (pictured in action) has rebranded to Butali Sugar Warriors. The name change came with goodies as they won all their weekend matches in the Kenya Hockey Union league. The Warriors started strongly their campaign when they grabbed all the six points in their trip to Nakuru and Nairobi over the weekend that moved them to third place, above Parkroad in the pool A standings. First they beat Nakuru 2-0 on their way to the City where they continued their tour with a 6-1 mauling over hosts Parkroad at the City Park Hockey Stadium Sunday. The side was playing its first matches of the season after finally settling outstanding tussle with KHU and Nairobi Simba. Nairobi Simba protested that Kisumu fielded an ineligible player in one of their 2013
premier league match. The verdict, albeit after six months favoured the rebranded side. The match, which was Butali’s second this season was delayed by close to 30 minutes after the two umpires declined to take to the field protesting the name change when Kisumu stepped into the field with two sets of newly branded uniform- red and grey with two sponsors’ names on them. Parkroad took the lead just two minutes into the game through Gilbert Lang’at drag flick which resulted from a penalty. Warriors came back to the game when Emmanuel Simiyu equalized from the spot. Simiyu completed his brace immediately after resumption in the 39th minute before Vincent Odhiambo extended the lead with a third goal in the 57. Frank Wanangwe, scored a fourth a minute later.

Student wins Nairobi x-country series opener A sitting form four student Bernard Muia beat all odds to win the senior men 12km race during the opening leg of Athletics Kenya (AK) National Cross Country Series’ weekend meeting in Nairobi on Saturday. The 18-year-old is currently sitting for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KSCE) exams at Ndumbi Secondary School in the southern region of Machakos. He clocked 32:55, with John Elimlim two seconds shy in second as Franklin Ngelei (32:86) holding on for third. “I listened to my coach who told me how to run 12km since it is different from junior race and I was patient until the right time. The exams are not hard for me since I wake up very early to train before I go
to class to write my papers and study in the evening. It’s balancing education and running since I want to go on a scholarship in Japan like my sister,” he said. The event held at the relatively flat Posta Grounds course in the outskirts of the Kenyan capital was a first stop in the seven-meet series that will culminate in the IAAF Permit National Cross Country Championships in February where the country’s team for the March 28, 2015 IAAF World Cross in Guiyang, China will be selected. Aguero fires winner in Manchester derby chaos Manchester City won a chaotic derby at Etihad Stadium after Sergio Aguero’s second-half strike gave the Premier League champions victory over Manchester United. Aguero’s 10th Premier League goal of the season finally breached a depleted United defence after Chris Smalling was sent off in the first half. Marcos Rojo was taken off on a stretcher after the break with shoulder damage. The win was a huge relief for manager Manuel Pellegrini’s side after losing at West Ham in the league before their Capital One Cup defence was ended at home by Newcastle. Aguero’s goal may have felt like vindication to City fans who were infuriated at seeing a succession of penalty appeals rejected by referee

Michael Oliver. United manager Louis van Gaal saw his defence stripped bare as strikers Angel Di Maria, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney failed to fire. Nerves and tempers were frayed towards the end as United mounted a recovery of sorts. It was impossible to see the visitors keeping City out - and they did not. The breakthrough came after 62 minutes when Yaya Toure’s pass cleared space on the left flank for Gael Clichy, whose cross was met by Aguero. He pulled away from defenders to flash a powerful finish high past De Gea. Navas struck a post but against all odds, United became a threat as Hart saved from Van Persie and Di Maria, while Fellaini headed hopelessly wide from eight yards.
Coach, agent disown Jeptoo in drugs scam Coach Claudio Berardelli and agent Federico Rosa have distanced themselves from marathoner Rita Jeptoo after news broke out that she had failed a drugs test. Berardelli, who also coached Mathew Kisorio when he admitted to having used steroids two years ago, says the news may be a sign that drug use among Kenyan athletes may be widespread as was claimed two years ago. The Government and Athletics Kenya officials have vehemently denied the claims. “If the story of Rita can be the key to open the door of the dirty system, please let Rita pay for it,” said Berardelli. The coach said the 2014 Boston and Chicago winner told him she was confused and didn’t understand what was happening. The Italian coach, who handles several Kenyan athletes, including Janet Jepkosgei and world champion Eunice Sum, said the news on Jeptoo was a surprise to him.

Suarez hungers for first victory in Barcelona shirt Luis Suarez remains without a victory in a Barcelona shirt as the Catalans suffered a shock 1-0 fall to Celta Vigo on Saturday. Barca had been unbeaten in the league until last
weekend, but consecutive losses have seen them slip to third in La Liga behind Real and Atletico Madrid. Luis Enrique’s frontline of Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi struck the
woodwork four times. They were denied by Celta ‘keeper Sergio Alvarez before Joaquin Larrivey’s strike sealed the Galicians first away win over Barca since 1941. “To make my
debut in the Camp Nou in a competitive game was nice but the result is negative. He completed the 90 minutes for the first time in four months after his ban for biting Italian defender
Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup. “I felt much better today than other days. You always have to be 100 per cent ready to competey,” Suarez said.
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman hailed his match winner Victor Wanyama after the midfielder drove Saints to victory at Hull. Wanyama played a pivotal role in Saints’ 1-0 win at KC Stadium in arguably his best performance since joining the club just more than a year ago. Wanyama produced a superb 40-yard finish after just three minutes to score the only goal of the game. But he dominated the midfield area and, along with Morgan Schneiderlin, provided vital protection to the back four who came under immense pressure in the first half. Koeman said: “The goal was amazing but how he played in everything in the midfield – he was strong, he was winning the battles. He was good on the ball, we had good position play. “Now Jack Cork was not playing and we have more options in the midfield and we need that in a long tough season.”

Kipsang, Keitany dazzle in New York Wilson Kipsang and Mary Keitany won big at the 44th New York City Marathon. Kipsang, a former world record holder, won the men’s title, completing the race in just 2 hours 10 minutes and 59 seconds to collect the Sh8.9million pay-out. The 32-year-old athlete also won the Sh44.5million prize after taking the World Marathon Majors title from countryman Dennis Kimetto, who won at the 2014 Berlin Marathon in September in 2 hours 2 minutes and 57 seconds, breaking Kipsang’s old world record by 26 seconds. Keitany crossed the line in 2:25:07 for Kenya double. Kipsang’s winning time was slowest of the 11 marathons in his career so far, albeit with the former world record holder over the distance running the second half almost three minutes faster than the first. His halfway split of 1:06:56 had suggested an even slower outcome but meant that the second half was run in 1:04:03. Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia, who came in second in the race, by seven seconds as well Ethiopia’s Gebre Gebremariam, who won this race in
2010 and placed third at 2:12:13. 39-year-old Eritrean-born American Mebrahtom “Meb” Keflezighi, who won the New York City marathon in 2009, fought his way to fourth at 2:13:18 and Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, who won the last two New York City marathons, led the pack until the final miles when he finished in sixth place at 2:13:44. “Lelisa was very close to me, but I conserved energy for the final sprint. In the last 200 metres it was all me,” said Kipsang. 32-year-old Keitany, back from a maternity sabbatical and competing in her first marathon since finishing fourth at the 2012 London Olympics beat fellow Kenyan long distance runner, Jemima Jelagat Sumgong by three seconds, making it one of the closest finishes in the race’s history. The two Kenyan athletes pulled away from the lead pack and dueled for the final four miles. Sumgong, 29, who finished second in Chicago in 2013 and in Boston in 2012, is still seeking her first major marathon title. Sara Moreira from Portugal placed third at 2:26:00 in her marathon debut.
