Obama, GOP rivals to discuss poll whack UHURU LAUNCHES PSV CASHLESS SYSTEM
US President Barack Obama will issue a public statement later today following the country’s mini-election which saw his party, the Democrats, lose a majority of Senate seats to the Republicans. Obama is also scheduled to host a bipartisan leaders’ meeting on Friday to chat the way forward after an election whose results are seen as a repudiation of his presidency.

Obama, rivals to discuss poll loss From Page 1 The Republicans popularly known in the US as GOP (abbreviation for Grand Old Party) won several senate seats held by Democrats to shift the balance of power away from rivals. That gives them full control of Congress and power to pin down President Obama in his last two years in office. The thumping upends the balance of power between the White House and Capitol Hill only six years after Obama’s Democrats swept to power and marginalised Republicans in
a rush to reform health care, Wall Street and pass a huge stimulus package. But the Democrats will now take the back seat on Capitol Hill, relying mostly on the power of the filibuster to stymie Republicans and keep Obama’s legacy intact. “For too long, this administration has tried to tell the American people what is good for them and then blame somebody else when their policies didn’t work out,” Mitch McConnell, who is expected to become the next Senate majority leader, said in a victory speech.
In the House, the GOP won 246 seats, its largest majority since World War II. Speaker John Boehner, celebrating a widened majority, said he is “humbled by the responsibility the American people have placed with us.” “But this is not a time for celebration,” he said. “It’s time for government to start getting results and implementing solutions to the challenges facing our country, starting with our still-struggling economy. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has controlled the Senate since
2007, congratulated Republicans on their victory. “The message from voters is clear: they want us to work together,” Reid said. Democratic fears of a rout came true, as party candidates struggled to defend seats won in the 2008 Obama wave in conservative territory, and couldn’t get out from under an unpopular president limping through his second term. The losses in Colorado and Iowa will sting especially hard, as those two states enjoyed a fabled place in Obama’s world, as drivers of the president’s unlikely bid for the
White House in 2008. The GOP also piled up wins in Montana, South Dakota, Arkansas, West Virginia and North Carolina — all seats that had been in Democratic hands — to surpass their magic number of six net gains. With seats still to be decided in Virginia, Alaska and Louisiana -- where there will be a runoff in December. The Republicans already have 52 seats in the Senate. Where they previously had a minority of 45 against the Democrats 53. Two seats were held by independent candidates.
US teacher who visited Migori quits over Ebola
SITUATION ON THE GROUND: So far, the Ebola problem is limited to Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Two other countries, Nigeria and Senegal, have had cases, but are now Ebola-free. The DR Congo had an outbreak of a different strain of Ebola that now looks like it might be contained. Despite clear geographical limits to the Ebola outbreak, Parents in a Louisiana school seem confused, forcing a teacher to resign after fears surrounding her trip to Kenya erupted.
A teacher at St Margaret Mary Catholic School, in Louisiana, US, who recently returned from a mission trip to Migori has quit following frustrations and fears over Ebola. Cecilia Hart Price, the Chief Communications Officer for the Archdiocese of Louisville, told the Courier Journal that Susan Sherman had resigned. She said St. Margaret Mary’s principal has started the process of filling the vacancy. The school had asked Sherman to take a paid “precautionary leave” of absence of 21 days on returning from her trip after “strong parent concerns” about Ebola. It also asked Sherman, who is a registered nurse, to provide a doctor’s note showing she was in good health. There have been no reported cases of Ebola in Kenya. Steve James, founder of Kenya Relief, the NGO with which Herman was working in Kenya, said: “We don’t have Ebola in Kenya. It’s unfortunate when people making decisions “don’t pay attention to facts.”
Gunmen kill moderate Mombasa Muslim cleric Muslim cleric Sheikh Salim Bakari Mwarangi was shot dead last night by unknown assailants. Bakari was killed as he returned home from evening prayers at Bilal Mosque in Likoni. Mombasa County Police
Commander Robert Kitur said the cleric was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died. “He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries,” he said. A relative, Kasi Mranja, said Bakari
was shot three times, twice on the abdomen and once in the arm by two attackers who were on a motorbike. Bakari has been described as a cleric who supported the Government efforts to stop radicalism among the
youth in coast region. Haki Africa, a Muslim rights group, has condemned the killing saying it may have been as a result of his stand against extremism at the coast. Francis Auma, the organisation’s programmes coordinator, said
Bakari was helping the Government in dealing with radicalisation and guiding Muslim youth towards the right path. “He may have created enemies, but police will establish the truth in their investigations,”Auma told Reuters.

JKUAT fines students as it re-opens
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has slapped its students with a Sh5,200 fine and ordered them report back to college on Monday next week. A circular from the Vice Chancellor’s office said the mandatory charge will cater for damages caused within the university when they went on the rampage last Saturday in protest of a new fee policy by the administration. The notice said all final year and first year students are expected to report on Monday November 10 and sign both the nominal rolls and bonding form. They have also been ordered to clear all outstanding fees on the same day. The reopening dates for the other continuing students will be made in due course, the notice also posted on the university website said.
Study reveals thatmoney can indeedb buy happiness It turns out that whoever said money can’t buy happiness might just have been broke. Money may in fact be the key to happiness. An analysis by the Pew Global research group has revealed that people with higher incomes and more household goods are more satisfied with life in general. The survey asked respondents whether they had nine key household items, which they linked to a sense of satisfaction. The items included a television, refrigerator, washing machine, microwave oven, computer, car, bicycle, motorcycle and radio. “The more items a person had on this list, the happier they appeared to be,” said the experts.
The study covered 28 different countries across the world, including Kenya and concluded that “life satisfaction is strongly related to national per capita income.” Respondents from Mexico topped the list. Israel came second while Venezuela and Brazil followed in that order. The United States, Germany and the UK also made it to the top 10 list. Out of all the countries surveyed, Kenya was second last in terms of happiness and financial satisfaction. In fact, only 9 per cent of low income Kenyans are relatively happy with their current situation while 17 per cent of high income Kenyans are happy with theirs.

The bodies of the officers have been taken for preservation at various mortuaries in the city. The bandits then escaped with more than 20 guns and thousands of bullets. A massive police operation involving Kenya Defence Force (KDF) soldiers is
currently ongoing in the area to recover the firearms. Only five guns have so far been recovered. The firearms were recovered from area elders whom the raiders had submitted them to. More are expected to be handed over today as airstrikes pounding nearby forest where the bandits are suspected to be hiding continue. Many residents are now escaping to nearby villages fearing the ruthlessness of the operation.

Panari Hotel changing the game WEDNESday, november 5, 2014
Kenya’s hospitality industry is set for unprecedented levels of growth despite unstable business spells owing insecurity. Players like the Panari Hotel are keen to be part the action. As the country positions itself as the top financial, travel, and business hub in East and Central Africa, the Panari Hotel has been setting itself up
as a unique brand in a city that has over 160 hotels. Started in 2005, Panari prides itself as the only hotel in East and Central Africa to have an ice skating rink. It is also the closest hotel from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Setting itself apart from many others in the industry, Panari is home to a number of consumer-oriented facilities,
including a café, a bar and a night club, including the Black Gold Café, the Red Garnet Restaurant, the Amber Coffee Shop and the Ruby Lounge. Its rooms, described as one of the hotels major revenue boosters, offer a range of facilities from Wi-Fi internet to power showers and Jacuzzis. There’s also an indoor swimming pool.
ICE HOCKEY: Ice hockey players on the Solar Ice Rink at the Panari Hotel.
Its dining facilities, a boon for Nairobi’s ever-growing middleclass, are famous for their unique colour-coded names and inviting yet sophisticated atmosphere. One X News reporter had the pleasure of sampling some of the fine culinary delights at the Black Gold Café. He took note of the favourable prices as well as a wide variety of tasty dishes and sweet drinks. Despite a recent drop in tourist numbers given the country’s recent security concerns, the hotel has managed to keep its head above water. “Other hotels target leisure travellers. We also cater for leisure guests but Panari is more corporate oriented,” says the hotelier, which has, in the recent past, accommodated businesspeople, investors and the like.
Going forward, the Hotel is expected to host more of the same as Kenya’s tourist numbers are projected to reach 3 million by 2015. Speaking during the launch of the 2015 Africa Hotel Investment Forum, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism, Ruth Solitei said: “The potential is even higher as the sector is projected to be a leading future international service industry.” Panari’s facilities are further complimented by the Hotel’s famous Solar Ice Rink, one of its major selling points, which has been enjoying a monopoly in the ice skating sector. The rink is ideal for ice parties, skating lessons, hockey games, and office team building events. The Hotel also offers a variety of other services from outside catering to providing
space for wedding receptions. But that’s not all they have to offer. The hotelier recently announced plans for a Panari Resort in Nyahururu that will face the Thomson falls. The 100-room resort will mirror the style of the Panari Hotel on Mombasa road, which has a breath-taking panoramic view of the Nairobi National Park. “Our policy is to be unique,” the hotelier told X News during an exclusive interview. Panari notes that Nyahururu has few hotels despite its proximity to the famous Thomson Falls area, which is ideal for nature walks. The Panari Resort Nyahururu should be operational in mid-2015 and will expand the Panari brand to offer up a wider variety of hospitality services.

City hot lunch vendors making Sh3,000 a day Office workers are often forced to either carry packed lunch or venture outside their places of work to forage for food. Others choose to skip lunch altogether. As a result, some enterprising Kenyans are cashing in on the opportunity by bringing food right to the top of people’s desks. They are taking home as much as Sh3,000 a day doing it. From snack sellers distributing cakes and mandazis for breakfast to food vendors selling hot rice and beans and a range of other local delicacies, informal food delivery services have become popular, especially around offices that are located far away from eateries. Sellers pack the food in light plastic containers and sell each meal for between Sh100 and Sh150. An office with 20 employees can therefore give a seller as much as Sh3,000 a day, though most distributors move from floor to floor or from building to building
Vihiga Mushroom farmers form group to boost their returns Mushroom farmers in western Kenya are currently making a small fortune from their guaranteed returns as they meet the demand of buyers from various parts of the country. Since mushroom farming got introduced in Vihiga district by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2002, it has attracted a good number of farmers. The farmers however have been facing a great challenge finding proper channels of accessing the mushroom
market. They had for a long time been faced with the uphill task of finding buyers for their produce, and thus came together to form the Vihiga Mushrooms group. They turned it into a registered company in March, 2003 with an initial membership of less than 1,000 farmers. Today the organisation boasts more than 2,600 active members. “As farmers we were all learners. We didn’t know what and where

our market was and that is how the association was born,” said Francis Silingi, the CEO of Vihiga Mushrooms. The Vihiga mushroom project has now helped them find individual distributors, who purchase their produce and retail them to consumers. The farmers bring their produce to the Vihiga Mushrooms office and record the amount they have delivered while the organisation delivers it to different towns. “We use the mushrooms to make Unga, beverages, soya and mushroom powder,” says Silingi. “Farmers don’t have to worry about the market for their produce, they just concentrate on production” The group has identified distributors in Eldoret, Kisumu, Nakuru and Nairobi who buy their mushrooms as wholesale and retail to individual consumers. Florence Minayo, is one of the distributors based in Nairobi and has been working with them since 2007. Minayo, who is based in Dandora, receives a supply of dried 50kg mushrooms every month at a price of Sh1,000 which she sells at roughly Sh2,000. A 25gram packet of mushroom powder is sold at about Sh25 while a kilogram of mushroom flour goes for Sh150.

XAccess caught up with the down-to-earth presenter and learnt all about her music and rings collection. Who is Adelle? Weird. I am different and I do not conform. I am also a really loud person. Why is breast cancer close to your heart? I lost my mum to breast cancer and I try help out as much as I can with different causes that support cancer. Being in a position of influence like I am, gives me the opportunity to educate people on getting screened. At the moment, cancer awareness is low and people do not understand that the earlier they find the cancer the better. You were recently a victim of cyberbullying, tell us about it. There is hate everywhere. The genesis of the bullying started when I called out a certain artiste (name withheld), when he said foul things about me. I do not know the artiste like that but people online started attacking me saying my teeth are crooked. You get hate from people who do not know you and criticize the way you live your life. If it is happening to me what’s to say it is not happening to a person who is not as strong
as I am? We need to address this issue and people need to know that hiding behind your computer to break somebody else is low. It is something I want to get involved in. #TeamAdelle. Who are they? They are an amazing bunch of people. I cannot call them fans because they are family and they have saved me so many times without them knowing. I talk to them even when I am not on air. You released a song, Faded a few months ago. What made
you get into music? Because I can and no matter what people are going to say, I will not stop. Music is just another outlet of me living. I do not want to die before I have done as many things as I could possibly do. The song is just a fun song about going to the club with friends and having fun responsibly. The reception of the song has been overwhelming. I did not think it would get this far. Which artistes do you look up to in the industry?

Shebesh banished from church Apparently, Nairobi Women Representative Rachael Shebesh was thrown out of her PCEA Bahati church for what the church board thought was a lack of respect for the divinity marriage. This drama stems from Rachael’s scandalous

I look up to Wyre because I think he is very disciplined and ambitious, Mercy Myra is a legend that I admire and Victoria Kimani, because I respect her grind. Which artistes have you collaborated with and which ones would you want to work with? So far I have done a collaboration with G Kon on his song Twendeni. I would like to work with Fena, AKA from South Africa because he is someone who is proud
of his art, STL, Sarkodie, Victoria Kimani, and Sauti Sol. What happened to your spoken word sessions? I still write poetry and post on my blog. I want to bring back the sessions when I am not too busy so that there is no gap between shows. I will get back to it sooner rather than later. Why do you wear so many rings? Rings are life! I have like 50 of them.

to improve your home security and safety
Outdoor lights serve more purposes thanmost people think. Besides providing comfort when one wants to relax on the patio or deck, there are motion sensitive lights, which serve as a security boost. These lights brighten at the least movement, alerting the family of possible intrusion. “At the glow or brightening of the lights, intruders are scared because they will not know who has seen them. They do know ‘big brother bulb’ has been watching, all along” Henry Nyambane, a Nairobi electrician said. Movement within the homestead is made easier when outdoor lights are on.
In addition, outdoor lighting allows one to enjoy the beauty of their gardens as they savour the evening breeze on their decks. One can use colour bulbs of their choice to set the mood and ambience of the outdoor space. A well-lit outdoors keeps rodents, which generally reign in the dark, away. Homes with well-lit outdoor spaces are more inviting and warmer. Such homes falso tend to fetch more in the market. But one need not fork an arm and a leg to keep these external lights own. Banish furniture cracks with f Distressing, or refurbishing surfaces, may cause the multiple layers too. It is advisable to scrap off or sand away the paint on the item before a new application to avoid ‘molehills’ of paint.
Cracks on painted furnitures may destroy an otherwise classy piece. Peter Nguya, a painter, says cracking many times results from thick paint layers. He says non-professionals are not likely to remain consistent with the strokes they make while painting. They end up creating more than one layer, which increase chances of tearing away. “Paint sheets have to be consistent. Professional’s hands have learnt to keep the number of strokes the same, giving
a work that has same sheets of paint,” the paint expert, with more than nine years experience said. Distressing, or refurbishing surfaces, may create multiple layers too. It is advisable to scrap off or sand away the paint on the item before a new application to avoid ‘molehills’ of paint. Thinner layers are less prone to breaking. Cool and hot temperatures cause varied contraction and expansion of paint and wood. The difference results in cracks. As much as you may not banish the cracking completely, using good quality paint in the correct mixture proportions with the additives is the only way to get lasting results.

You are what you eat. Stuffing yourself with junk food will eventually show on your body and skin. Bad diet habits can cause inflammation and make you appear older than you really are. A healthy diet is key to maintaining a clear skin and healthy life. Salt
Too much salt causes the body to retain water, which if not released, leads to swelling. The swelling mostly occurs on the area around the eyes because the skin there is thin. This leaves one with puffy eyes that do nothing for the “I woke up like this” appearance. Slow down on the salt intake.

Although milk is great for your body, it has been found that it does the opposite for skin. Some dairy products contain components that stimulate the oil glands in the skin setting up the skin for acne. There have been studies that linked dairy products to acne but the effects are pretty small. So, it does not hurt to slow down on the dairy.
Sugar
Sugar can weaken your immune system. When immune systems are weak, our body is left susceptible to infections and we cannot fight off bacteria. Sugar also chips away at the collagen, the protein that keeps your skin soft and springy. Leaving you more vulnerable to sagging skin and wrinkles. Who wants wrinkles when they are 25?
Alcohol
Alcohol leaves you dehydrated. It sucks the moisture from your skin leaving you with dry patchy skin. Looking like Voldemort is not the look you want. Alcohol also damages the liver which is responsible for clearing out toxins. This means excess alcohol makes you look pasty.
What to look for when buying jogging shoes
You have finally managed to psyche yourself up to go jogging. Your head phones are blasting with the latest work out music, you have your jogging gear on and you even bought the latest sport shoes just to show how serious you are with this jogging business. Good! Half an hour into the run, your feet start aching mercilessly. All of a sudden, your shoes feel tight and heavy. Your heel is pounding with each stride. As you continue, your feet become numb and start to tingle. You decide to stop with the torture and head back home, sad that your mission to keep fit has been rudely interrupted. You quickly throw the shoes off your feet, heave a sigh of relief as you allow your aching feet to breath. Relief is replaced with horror as you gape down only to notice blisters forming all over your toes. In case you are still not following; you are a victim of bad sports shoes. Getting the right sport shoes for jogging is the first step for a pleasurable and rewarding jogging experience. Below are tips to consider before buying jogging shoes. Feet tend to swell during jogging ensure your shoe has enough space to accommodate this. Opt for a half or full size larger than your normal shoe size when buying. Another tip
is to shop at the end of the day when your feet are a little bit swollen from the day’s activities. This will ensure you avoid buying small shoes as your feet will be at their largest. Even if you already know your size, have our feet measured first to avoid buying the wrong size. Remember different shoe brands have different size. The size you wear in a Nike brand may not necessarily be the same as in Adidas. Try as many shoes as you can and settle with the most comfortable one. Avoid buying solely using price, brand and fashion as key determinants but rather comfort and use. The shape of your foot will also determine which type of shoe is more suitable for you. Those with flat feet are advised to opt for running shoes designed to offer more stability, while those with slightly arched feet require shoes designed to enhance motion control. Know the ground surface in which the shoes will be used. Will you run on a tread mill? A pavement? A rough road? All these surfaces have different characteristics and will eventually determine the shoe needed. While a good pair of running shoes can be quite costly, you would rather invest in them now rather than later in the form of hefty doctors’ bills or health complications.

Who is your fashion idol? I wouldn’t say they’re my fashion idols per se but I do appreciate how these women have grown to understand their style and always seem confident in their choices. Women like Miroslava Duma, Aimee Song and Solange Knowles are names that come to mind.
Who is your favourite fashion designer? I’m currently obsessed with Stella Jean’s designs. I practically follow her on every platform I can get her on. She’s got such a vibrant flair to her designs that just draws me in.
Bishop Allan Kiuna in tweef with Alai
After the shocking revelation of Pastor Victor Kanyari’s conning ways on Jicho Pevu, Robert Alai breathed fire on reverend Allan and Cathy Kiuna saying they are lavishing off their faithful’s sweat. He specifically pointed out their humongous mansion saying: “What Allan and Cathy Kiuna have built from your sweat while you are still waiting for some white God to come rescue you.” Allan Kiuna responded on his Twitter page from South Africa, saying: “Had a wonderful golfing day in Pretoria. As haters hate, I am enjoying the goodness of G od. Love y’all n c u Sunday.” And we thought the clergy should be exemplary by turning the other cheek.

Comedian Eric Omondi is a careless driver
Kenya’s darling comedian Eric Omondi, allegedly almost knocked over pedestrians at Daystar Valley Road as told by lyricist Jemedari on Twitter. Jemedari said Omondi took his eyes off the road because he was distracted by a girl he was with in his car. Omondi, however refuted the claims, saying he is a very careful driver. Jemedari has since challenged the comedian to a drive-off to confirm if indeed he can drive safely.

State has duty to help Kenyans suffering in diaspora Evacuation programmes must always be available on standby to help suffering Kenyans in diaspora (Stranded Kenyans ask Government to help them leave Libya, November 04, 2014). Closure of the embassy in wartorn Libya does not make Kenyans
in that country foreigners. Kenya remains bound to protecting the life of her citizens wherever they are. They must not suffer for legally going out in search for jobs, which are limited locally. Part of the budget for the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs must cater for such incidental cases. It was unfortunate for Kenyans, who were stuck for days in Ebola-ravaged Liberia, to fail to get help on time. The intervention by the Kenya Red Cross, which galvanised financial support,
deserves praise. Helping the 16 citizens in Libya is not different from the rescue of those who had been caught up in South Sudan earlier in the year. It is the responsibility of the Government to protect her people even if they are captured in any
part of the world. These Kenyans have families who will be affected to learn of the sorrows their kin may be subjected to. Constitutionalism entails respecting human rights, including protecting life.

Steeplechase king Kemboi denies Nakuru firearm drama
World steeplechase champion Ezekiel Kemboi has denied claims that he whipped out a gun on a motorist over the weekend. It is claimed the 3000 steeplechase champion picked up a quarrel with a female motorist before he brandished a gun at her. The woman is alleged to have asked the athlete be patient as she parked outside a
Nakuru night club. “I was at the club on Friday but at no point did I get out my gun and threaten anyone. It puzzles me where such rumours came from,” he said. It’s said Kemboi also broke the wind breaker of the woman’s car in the alteration, removed keys to the car and gave them to security officers before
driving off. This is not the first time Kemboi is on the headlines for the wrong reasons. In months leading to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he was accused of stabbing a woman. The incident threatened to lock out the athlete from the Kenya team before he went on to win gold in London.
TROUBLED KING? Ezekiel Kemboi leads the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2013 Paris Diamond League meeting. The athlete is reported to have been involved in a violent confrontation with a female motorist outside a Nakuru club.
Palace players too honest, says manager Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock says he has been told his side should appeal more for penalties, describing his players as “too honest”. Palace lost 3-1 at home to Sunderland on Monday, extending their run without a Premier League win to four games. Warnock’s side had a strong claim for a penalty denied inside the first minute against the Black Cats, when Santiago Vergini brought
down Fraizer Campbell. “I was told we should appeal for penalties a lot more,” said Warnock. “But I don’t understand why we should have to appeal. If someone kicks your shin, they should be given.” Steven Fletcher scored twice at Selhurst Park as the Black Cats lifted themselves out of the relegation zone. Wes Brown’s own goal cancelled out Fletcher’s first goal, before Jordi Gomez
re-established Sunderland’s lead. Warnock was left to rue Phil Dowd’s refusal to award his side an early penalty, one of a number of decisions the Palace boss feels have gone against his side in recent games. The 65-year-old was last week charged with misconduct by the Football Association after saying referee Craig Pawson was “influenced” by Chelsea players during the Blues’ 2-1 win at Selhurst Park.

Murray seeded with Federer Andy Murray has been drawn in the same group as Roger Federer for the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Murray, 27, has won three titles in the past six weeks to qualify for the eight-man season-ending tournament, which takes place from 9-16 November. The Scot is in Group B along with Swiss second seed Federer, Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic of Canada. Top seed Novak Djokovic, Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka, Czech Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic of Croatia are in Group A. Murray will open play on Sunday against Nishikori, followed by Federer against Raonic. Wawrinka and Berdych

Murray has avoided defending champion Djokovic, who beat him at the Paris Masters last week to end his 11-match winning run. But the 2013 Wimbledon champion will face Federer, who is attempting to regain the world number one spot and win this title for a seventh time.

Kenya snubbed in 2015/6 IRB Series hosts list
masters: Despite Kenya’s fine performances at the world stage, the country has been ignored in a list of one of the three hosts of 2015/6 IRB World Series.
Kenya has been side-lined as one of three hosts of the 2015/2016 International Rugby Board Sevens World Series. Paris (France), Vancouver (Canada) and Singapore will be the lucky hosts in place of Glasgow (Scotland), Tokyo (Japan) and Las Vegas (USA). Earlier, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Mwangi Muthee had said Kenya had made a strong bid to host the event with full sponsors and Government backing. “Competition is tight. Everybody wants the Sevens and there are so many capable hosts and if one misses out, he has just to
take it on the chin.” He said while Kenyans had shown they are one of the most passionate people on Sevens rugby in the developing world, lack of top-class stadium facilities was a blow to the bid. It’s alleged that the Singapore Rugby Union had inked a deal with IRB to host one of the legs. This effectively means one of the countries in Asia - Hong Kong, Japan and Dubai - would lose out. Japan, who qualified as one of the core teams at the expense of Spain, lost out. A recent surge in rugby craze by Canada was rewarded by a tournament in Vancouver. Losers in
this case were USA, a fierce rival of Canada. US has hosted the tournament in Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas. The decision to go to Canada will be a blow to a country which has a huge potential for rugby. Venues to be retained are Gold Coast (Australia), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Wellington (New Zealand), Hong Kong and London (England). Israel derby chaos Bosh relishes the big man role after player sees red A Tel Aviv derby between Hapoel and Maccabi was abandoned at halftime after a fan attacked a player who was then sent off for retaliating. In events described as ‘shameful’ by Israel’s sports minister, Maccabi midfielder Eran Zahavi was confronted by a bare-chested fan on the pitch. Slaps and kicks were exchanged before the fan was led away by security officials. Zahavi was later dismissed, prompting further pitch invasions before the Monday match was abandoned. Hapoel manager and former West Ham and Manchester City midfielder
Eyal Berkovic said: “This was not a game of football, it was war... I’m stunned and ashamed to be involved in football on a day like today. “Both clubs and both sets of supporters must be severely punished for what happened here.” Israel international Zahavi, 27, had scored for the visitors with a penalty to make it 1-1 in the 33rd minute. Shortly after the fan confronted the player who tried to repel the attack before the supporter was restrained and taken away. Zahavi, who had taunted Hapoel fans behind the goal after scoring the equaliser, was then sent off by referee Roi Reinshriber for retaliating.
With LeBron James out of the picture, Chris Bosh (pictured) is asserting himself as the main man in South Beach to start the 2014-15 NBA season. Bosh went for 30 on Saturday against the Philadelphia 76ers, visibly relishing his role as the team’s leader in a 114-96 victory. “It’s fun, I’m not gonna lie,” he said. “It’s the beginning of the season and we haven’t hit any rough parts yet — and the rough parts will come. There will be times when it’s not fun. But so far, it’s OK. Fun or not, I try to stay even as much as possible and not get caught up in what everything means. “It’s more natural to me to be aggressive and attack the basket. This team didn’t need me to do that the last four years, but I’ve always thought I could really show everybody and now’s my chance. I
just humbly take the position and do as much work as I can.” His totals over the first two games were a substantial amount of work: 56 points, 17-for-35 shooting (5 of 9 on 3-pointers) and 23 rebounds.
Despite Bosh shooting 33.3 percent on 3s last season, opponents still do not pay enough attention to him on the perimeter. When will they?
Cancer centre plan in honour of ‘Chep-Cricket’
free for all: Slaps and kicks were exchanged in a derby between Hapoel and Maccabi before a fan who slapped a player was whisked away by officials.
Bomet County will benefit from a Cancer centre, schools cricket development programmes and a stadium in honour of the late national cricket captain Emily Ruto. The former captain was buried at Chepalungu, Bomet County last weekend. Isaac Ruto, the area governor said he will do his best to ensure Emmy’s legacy lives at home. She died of Leukaemia late last month in a Nairobi hospital. The family will also set up a
cancer centre in to be known as Chep-Cricket Cancer Centre. “Emmy loved cricket so much and she ended up being the first and only Kalenjin to have donned the national cricket team colours from an area that is popular with athletic. So as a way to ensure that her legacy continues living on, we will start cricket in this area,” Ruto said. As a way of honouring Emy’s contribution to women’s cricket, former prime minister Raila
Odinga asked the Government to support the women’s cricket team which is due to travel to South Africa for the Women Twenty20 World Cup Qualifiers in December. Cricket Kenya chairperson Jackie Janmohamed pledged an artificial surface once a ground has been identified. Janmohammed also donated mini cricket sets for disbursement to primary schools to jumpstart the cricket programmes.

Real, BVB advance, Arsenal falter
Holders Real Madrid and 2013 finalists Borussia Dortmund eased into the last 16 of this season’s Champions League with two group games to spare yesterday night. Madrid recorded their fourth win in four Group B games, and their 12th consecutive victory in all competitions, beating Liverpool 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to a first-half Karim Benzema goal. Arsenal should also have clinched their place in the last 16 on Tuesday as a Mikel Arteta penalty and strikes by Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put them 3-0 up at home to Anderlecht before squandering the lead late on. Mikel Arteta’s penalty put the Gunners ahead after Danny Welbeck was fouled by Chancel Mbemba. Alexis Sanchez doubled the lead with a stunning 20-yard volley before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain added the third. Anthony Vanden Borre reduced the deficit from close range before scoring a penalty, with Aleksandar Mitrovic equalising in the last minute. Dortmund shrugged aside
their dreadful domestic form to maintain their perfect record in Group D, crushing Galatasaray 4-1 in Germany. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen won to close in on qualification for the last 16 while Juventus, Basel and Benfica all recorded precious victories but Arsenal threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Anderlecht in London. Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid utterly outclassed Liverpool in winning 3-0 at Anfield two weeks ago and a similar outcome appeared on the cards when visiting manager Brendan Rodgers named a side missing regulars such as captain Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling. However, in the end the only goal of the game came in the 27th minute, Benzema converting a Marcelo cross into the back post. That meant Cristiano Ronaldo remains on 70 Champions League goals for now, one short of the competition record still held by Madrid great Raul. “I think we played well, albeit the tempo wasn’t that high,” said Ancelotti, while Rodgers praised Liverpool’s display.
IT’s GOING TO HURT: Anderlecht’s Mitrovic (right) beats Per Mertesacker to a near-post header to complete the most unlikely of comebacks. The Belgians fought back from 3-0 down to tie at 3-3 on the 91st minute.

Embattled Jeptoo requests B sample test In efforts to clear her soiled name, marathoner Rita Jeptoo has requested to have B sample tested after she tested positive of Erythropoietin, EPO. The Boston and Chicago marathons winner is crossing fingers that the retest will give a different finding from the urine sample collected from her at an out of competition in September. The 33-year old met Athletics Kenya official on yesterday at the Riadha house in Nairobi but declined to comment on the issue. “We are happy with our first meeting and the athlete has been cooperative throughout the meeting,” said Athletics Kenya Vice President
David Okeyo “The athlete has provided her written explanation for the adverse analytical finding and has expressed her right to have the analysis of the B sample.” Okeyo later explained that they would discuss the matter further after receiving the report of the B sample. “She is for now provisionally suspended from competition as she goes through the procedure but she has been sanctioned. “We will divulge more details after the B sample has been tested,” he said of the test that initially indicated that Jeptoo could have taken the banned hormonal growth substance.
Mikel, Remy out of Maribor clash Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is still without midfielder John Mikel Obi (pictured) and striker Loic Remy for their clash with Slovenian champions NK Maribor tonight. Remy has not recovered from a groin complaint and has not travelled, along with Mikel who has a knee problem. Mourinho will also decide whether to rest striker Diego Costa because of his ongoing hamstring troubles. Maribor coach Ante Simundza will be without experienced defender Ales Mejac who has a hamstring problem. Chelsea cruised to a 6-0 win over Maribor at Stamford Bridge in their Group G encounter a fortnight ago. However, Mourinho admits that result does
not reflect the quality the Slovenian side have in their ranks. “The 6-0 win is a fake situation. Normally Chelsea to score goals needs a lot of chances,” he said. “I need to convince the players that the game at Stamford Bridge was one of these matches where everything goes in our direction. “I know Maribor are a good team. I analysed them against Sporting and Schalke.”
