Family rattled by kin ‘mystery’ death at KNH The family of a student who was found dead barely hours after he was admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital has threatened to sue the facility for damages. Mystery still surrounds the death of 24-year-old Wilfred Weke after he was admitted to the hospital for a dialysis session on Saturday evening. He was found dead a kilometre from the referral facility on Monday morning. The family says they were informed of the death of the Zetech College student after his body was found wrapped in a KNH clothe along Mara Road in the adjacent Upper Hill area. Details of how he left the hospital are still scanty, the family says.

From Page 1 They claim the deceased was too weak to walk out of the hospital and are demanding answers from the management on how he met his death. Although police have launched investigations, Weke’s sister, Faith, has asked the hospital to explain what transpired between the time
her brother was admitted and the discovery of his remains. Faith said they plan to sue the hospital. “Doctors said he disappeared. How can that be? We need to know what happened and we are not doing it just for ourselves. We are doing it for the innocent who do not know their rights and they do not know how to
speak out. The hospital should not hide this kind of thing because many more will die (this way),” she said. Weke’s nephew, Daniel, said Wilfred was found without clothes except a blanket which was used to cover his torso. “No one can walk outside Kenyatta National Hospital or even the room itself without notice. Weke was weak
and could not even walk. So these people are trying to hide a lot of information,” he claimed. They have asked police to unearth details of how their relative perished. The body was taken to the City Mortuary. “When we went there (KNH), we found the body had dirt on the back. So we need to find out especially
from those at City Mortuary, who really did this and why it did happen like this because we live in a society where there needs to be accountability,” Daniel said. Attempts to contact Kenyatta National Hospital administration failed as all the senior officials were said to be engaged.
Premier leads Australia’s salute for café siege victims Australian Prime Minister Tony this morning laid flowers at a temporary memorial site in Sydney in honour of the Monday café siege that left three people dead, including the attacker. Accompanied by wife, Margie, Abbott laid a bouquet of white flowers as she laid a red bunch at the memorial in Martin Place. The Prime Minister also wrote message before waving at the crowd and left without making a speech. CBCNews reported that hundreds of people have been leaving flowers at the memorial site. The Iranian-born attacker detained 17 hostages Monday at the Lindt Chocolat Café, before the siege ended 16 hours after heavy gunfire exchange with security officers. Authorities said Katrina Dawson, 38, a lawyer and mother of three, and Tori Johnson, 34, the manager of the establishment were killed along with the terrorist. The gunman, 50, identified as Man Haron Monis, was out on bail despite a series of criminal charges. Six other people injured in the Monday incident are recovering in hospital. Australian police begin probe into café siege that killed 2
World is comfortable with America’s policy on spying The United States has been monitoring the communications of suspected terrorists, American citizens, the leaders of other countries and their people. Information leaked by whistleblower, Edward Snowden, have found that countries across the world have been under the watchful eye of the US. Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, has seen his leaks lead to widespread criticism of American violations of national sovereignty and personal privacy. Despite some cases of disapproval publics in many parts of the world, including Kenya, generally have no objection to the spying, as long as it is done for the sake of monitoring
suspected terrorists. In fact, from a list of 31 countries across the globe, 88 per cent of Kenyans, 90 per cent of Israelis and 88 per cent of Italians are particularly supportive of the move. Germans, however, are enraged about American spying on Chancellor, Angela Merkel and on ordinary German citizens though 70 per cent support such efforts. Americans (73 per cent) are similarly supportive of such surveillance, with older members of the public, 50 years and older, more sympathetic than the young, aged between 18 and 29. No country surveyed has more than half the public opposing the monitoring of terrorists.
Uhuru orders millers to reduce price of maize flour
President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged millers to reduce the price of maize flour saying the cost of power has gone down. The President said the reduced cost of power should translate into cheaper goods and services for Kenyans. President Kenyatta, who spoke during the Kenya Navy Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Kenya Navy headquarters in Mombasa, said failure by millers to lower the prices was exploitative. The cost of electricity, which accounts for 60 percent of producing maize flour, has gone down by 60 percent after the addition of 280MW into the national grid recently. The Government expects the reduced costs of power to spur development and reduce the cost of living for Kenyans. President Kenyatta also
directed the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to start buying maize from farmers to save them from exploitation by brokers. He said farmers were the foundations of the country’s economy and should benefit from their produce. “We do not want to see farmers and consumers being exploited. There should be fair business,” President Kenyatta said. The President who was the Chief Guest at the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Kenya Navy commended the force for the critical role it has played in securing the country’s borders after the Kenya’s military entered Somalia to fight off terrorists. He also commended the Navy’s role in the fight against drug traffickers

An investigation has been launched into the police operation which ended a siege in a cafe in Sydney, Australia. Two people died, along with the gunman, as police commandos stormed the cafe in Martin Place in the heart of Sydney early on Tuesday morning. The victims have been named in the media as cafe manager Tori Johnson, 34 and Sydney lawyer Katrina Dawson, 38. Tributes are being paid to them and flags are flying at half mast on all NSW government buildings. Police are also investigating the motives of the attacker, named as Man Haron Monis, an Iranian refugee who was a known extremist and criminal Central Sydney was put in lockdown on Monday morning as the gunman entered the Lindt Chocolat Cafe and seized hostages. The siege ended as police stormed the cafe in the early hours of Tuesday. The investigation - standard practice when police are involved in a fatal incident - is being led by New South Wales Homicide Squad detectives on behalf of the state’s coroner, and could take weeks or months. At a press conference on Tuesday, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn would not say whether Monis shot the hostages himself. Nor would she confirm media reports that cafe manager Mr Johnson was shot when he grappled with Monis, who was carrying a gun.

Ex-GSU man charged for attempting to kill ‘lover’ A jilted lover poured acid on his former girlfriend in a bid to kill her, a prosecutor told a court yesterday. Mr Andrew Muigai who was dismissed from the GSU over indiscipline was yesterday charged before a Makadara court with the attempted murder of Ms Mary Wairimu Chege on November 21 2012. The prosecution said the suspect has been having a pending warrant of arrest for two years after he went into hiding following the attack at the woman’s residence in the Nairobi’s Kayole estate. He denied a charge of attempting to kill by pouring acid on his victim. Mr Muigai was denied bail after the prosecution said he has a separate criminal case file in which he had been ordered to deposit his passport which indicated he was to travel to Afghanistan. He returns to court today for
a determination of his bail terms and setting of hearing dates for the case against his former lover. A magistrate ordered that the other file be brought to court before further directions. In the case of attempted murder, the prosecution states that the assailant walked to the victim’s house and found her hanging washed clothes on a drying line before she told her to “say her last prayers.” He then reportedly pulled out a small bottle and drenched the woman’s face and breasts “with a liquid.” Neighbours then saw him walking away while the woman started screaming that “something was burning her.” They rushed to her rescue and poured cold water on the burns but when it got worse she was rushed to hospital and “was admitted in critical condition.”
ESTRANGED: Kayole estate in Nairobi. A jilted lover in the estate poured acid on his former girlfriend in a bid to kill her, a prosecutor told a court yesterday.
The suspect fled the scene without leaving the container behind, the case file states, and has since been underground until he was arrested recently in Nairobi. The police had kept the file open pending his arrest, the prosecution said.
Setting the holiday mood
‘There was a warrant of arrest which was pending against the accused person…we request that bail be delayed till we sought out maters in the other file,” prosecutor angel Fuchaka said. The suspects lawyer Evans Makori objected saying his client
was arrested on December 1 and that the police had enough time to clear pending issues. He said Mr Muigai was “not even aware that he had another pending matter and had only come to court to plead to the fresh charge of attempted murder.”
Govt cracks whip on “errant” NGOs Fifteen Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) accused of financing terrorism in the country have been de-registered. NGO Coordination Board Executive Director Fazul Mohamed says bank accounts of the NGOs have been frozen and permits of foreign workers revoked. “Some of the organisations are behind the 1998 terror attack in the country,” he said.
He told journalists on Tuesday that they had identified the source of the money and those the NGOs have been working with. He says the organisations have been involved in financing terror activities in the country and the region. He says donors will now be required to inform the government the amount of money they give NGOs and the activities they are funding.
Taliban militants in deadly assault on Pakistan school
FESTIVE MOOD SET: Susan Musiega, an Officer at Securex Agencies Limited, prepares for Christmas by decorating a tree at the company’s Headquarters along Parklands Road.
At least 20 people have been killed and 40 hurt in a Taliban assault on an army-run school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, officials say. Five or six militants wearing security uniforms entered the school, officials said. Gunfire and explosions were heard as security forces surrounded the area. The army says most of the school’s 500 students have been evacuated. It is not clear how many are being held hostage. A Taliban spokesman says the assault is in response to army operations. Hundreds of Taliban fighters are thought to have died in a recent military offensive in North Waziristan and the nearby Khyber area. A school worker and a student interviewed by the local Geo TV station said the attackers had entered the Army Public School’s auditorium, where a military team was conducting first-aid training for students. Ambulances and a helicopter were seen in the area.

NHC to offer Sh200m loans for rural housing
TUESday, DECember 16, 2014
The National Housing Corporation plans to inject Sh200 million to meet the huge housing demand in rural areas. NHC will offer loans at 13 per cent interest rate on reducing balance with maximum repayment period of 10 years. Managing Director Henry Maina said the corporation is focusing on rural areas to meet a huge demand and tap into the growing potential triggered by devolution “Rural and peri-urban housing has grown over the past few years with infrastructure development expanding into the counties. This has made most Kenyans venture more into home construction in peri-urban areas. This is why we are pushing for financing of home projects in these areas,” said Maina. He said up to 1000 units will be developed annually through rural housing loans. As the amount on disbursement increases, the units developed will increase to more than 2,000 units. He said the corporation will increase the Sh200 million loan facility to Sh600 million in three years based on demand for the loans.

Architects union dismisses Standard Rail contract claims
The Architectural Association of Kenya has refuted claims that the recommended cancelling of a contract for the Standard Gauge Railway is a sign that stakeholders are ‘incompetent’. Architectural Association of Kenya chairman Waweru Gathecha said: “Our attention has been drawn to newspaper reports of 4th December 2014 attributed to the Parliamentary Investment Committee, (PIC) recommending the cancellation of a Consultancy contract for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) between Mombasa and Nairobi, Kenya.”

The alleged reasons for recommending the cancellation are that the Consortium - which includes two Kenyan firms, M/s APEC Consortium Ltd, M/s Edon Consultants International Ltd and a Chinese Firm, M/s TSDI - does not have the competence, expertise and experience to undertake the role envisioned in the contract.” Gathecha says AAK has rejected the Committee members’ claims that members involved in the project lack competence and expertise to review and supervise construction works. “AAK is resolute in its
message to all stakeholders in the development of large-scale infrastructure projects in Kenya,” he told a recent meeting. “It is imperative that we do not stifle the opportunities for growth and development of our Kenyan professionals’ capacities. In line with government policy, we must proactively encourage the transfer of technology, knowledge and experience, as will enable future large scale projects to be designed and supervised by local consultants, to the same high standards as found in the developed world.”

Amazon workers in Germany strike as Christmas orders peak A three day strike by Amazon workers in Germany began on Monday affecting five out of the nine online retail centres. The strike began at the Amazon distribution depots following a dispute over pay and working conditions. The company has over 9,000 employees in Germany. The workers union known as Verdi wants the employees to be part of the retail industry’s collective bargaining structure. Currently they are designated as logistics workers and receive aboveaverage pay for this sector. This is not the first time the union has organised a strike in the firm. On May 2013 they organised one forcing Amazon to seek help from other depots across Europe in a bid for the firm to meet deliveries on time. But despite this, the management has said that the delivery schedules remain the same and that orders would be met. They have even encouraged customers to order up until midnight on 21 December or even on 23 and 24 December if they pay for express delivery.
Maize brokers hoard supply as they brace for the dry season
HARVEST TIME: Farmers preparing their maize harvest in Narok, Kenya. Maize brokers in the country are hoarding the grains in anticipation for the high market prices likely to be experienced in the coming dry season.
The price of maize is likely to rise in the coming dry season. This has prompted traders to stockpile their supply for tougher days ahead. Warehouses in various parts of the country including one in Moi’s Bridge, one of the nation’s breadbasket districts, are already being used to hoard Kenya’s staple food. This is an age-old tactic used to help traders reap higher profits in times of drought. The bags of maize are arranged in
stacks up to 10 metres. Some that arrived about three months back are covered with polythene bags after they were fumigated. Market experts like agricultural researcher, Bedah Mengo say that the warehouse is currently receiving thousands of bags of maize, which were harvested this season for storage. While most farmers are simply selling their stock, it is the traders who are buying large amounts to
stock it for later. “The businesspersons are buying the maize in bulk from farmers at lower prices and storing it, waiting for the oversupply to end to sell for huge profits,” says Mengo. A bag of maize in the region is currently costs an average of Sh1500 However, traders buying the commodity in bulk can pay as little as 1,300 a bag. Some traders plan to buy up oto 40,000 bags and sell them later at a profit.

Dairy exports could fill Sh1 billion hole in Kenya’s economy While Kenya’s dairy industry is doing relatively well, there is greater potential in the export of processed milk products like skimmed milk, long life milk, butter, ghee, yoghurt, dry milk and occasionally cheese. The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) states that Kenya has one of the largest dairy industries in sub-Saharan Africa. The country boasts a milk market share of 24 per cent in the region. The milk industry supports over 140,000 farmers and gives the country close to Sh1 billion every
year. While there are more than 50 licensed processors across the country, most milk processors are concentrated in Nairobi, the central highlands and the Rift Valley region. As a result most of the milk products requirements for semiarid are imported from these regions,” says a statement from KARI’s experts. They note, however, that there is good market opportunity for different milk products due to expanding population and
improved income in the rural urban trading centres within the region. Since yogurt is highly perishable, the experts argue that there is need to process it into products that have a longer shelf life as well as products that are easier to handle and transport over long distances. New livestock breeding strategies will play an important role in meeting increased demand for Kenyan milk without risking the loss of hardy local breeds, sates a consortium of scientists from the region.

There is something to smile about in the
local film inDustry t
he Kenyan film industry has morphed and adapted to changing times, givinb international industries like Hollywood and Nollywood a run for their money. Gone are the days when Kenyans would sit down and spend countless hours perusing their televisions through English channels only. The 60 per cent local content directive from Government has been a breath of fresh air to producers and key players in the local film industry. Kenyans thought it was just another gimmick from the State and that the steam would die down after a while but this was not the case. Local content is being aired more than ever before. Turn on local channels from 7pm and you will see that indeed the government meant business. Local channels no longer screen those predictable Mexican soap operas, which flooded the airwaves the entire day. Nowadays,
the soaps have been pushed late into the night with Kenyan content getting prime time hours. The digital migration has seen vicious wars from Pay TV companies in a bid to woo consumers and content developers. Different companies are offering more local content in a bid to get a chunk of the enormous viewers in Kenya. Startimes has a fully-fledged Swahili channel to broadcast Kenyan content. Star Swahili offers an unrivaled mix of Kiswahili movies, series, drama, comedy, documentaries, celebrity lifestyles and talk shows. Zuku has partnered with Fox to air a cooking and travel series from East Africa called Tales From the Bush Larder. GoTv has not been left behind either. It has channels fully dedicated to African content like Africa Magic World, Africa Magic Epic movies and Africa Magic Family, all of which provide

higher opportunities for Kenyan content to be aired. Pay TV avails more channels hence provides an opportunity for local players to produce more content as they have more options to choose from, both local and international. The Kalasha Awards have also had a role to play in promoting and local content. The event seeks to award winners under various categories, which sets a healthy competition. This shows growth and provides the necessary incentives for local content. The industry has taken huge strides in recent years, landing Kenya on the global map, when it was nominated under several categories in the annual Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards. Our very own Nairobi Half Life was nominated under the best movie drama and best indigenous movie in Swahili language categories. Mohamed Zain and Barbara Minishi were nominated
under the best lighting designer and art director categories respectively. Those who manage to get nominated let alone scoop an award receive a turbo boost in their careers as international contracts will start flowing in. All in all, the industry has got massive potential and is waking up from its slumber. More can be done, but at least key players are willing to tap into the raw talent and numerous opportunities the industry has to offer. Producers have done their part, actors are getting better by the day, awards have recognized the good work being done by industry players and Government has also done something. Kenyans need to rise up and support their own. Let us buy Kenyan to build Kenyan.

Strength of a man in the Luo culture The African society has always blamed women for any failures in their households. Most cultures generally exonerated men from any failure or blame even when it was clear that they were on the wrong. But the Luo community stood out in enforcing justice, when it came to the consumation of new marriages. On the day of the wedding, shortly after dusk, two married men and women accompanied the newlyweds to the room where they were to spend their first night. They were to witness the first encounter of this new couple so as to give report to the eagerly waiting kin! Imagine that! According to Ocholla Ayayo, an ethnologist, the husband was supposed to stamp his authority and strength over the wife by consummating the union on the very day of the marriage. Because of fear, stage fright, abnormality or dysfunctional gadget, a man could have failed. If that happened, he was considered a disgrace to the family and relatives. Such a man was not counted among men!

ou have probably come across his work in the streets, slums and train station but did not put a face to the work. Kevin Esendi, street name Bankslave, is a force to reckon with in the graffiti world. He is the Michelangelo of street art. The street walls are his canvas and the spray can his brush. Born in Kibera slums, his level of creativity is incomparable. He has the ability to turn a plain, boring dilapidated wall into a splash of color and an inspiring piece of art. Mask in place, he dexterously shakes his spray can to come up with master piece after masterpiece which has earned him respect from the slums of Kibera to Germany. His Kenyan crew is called Spray uzi, and he is also part of a German crew called Ghettopimps. He nostalgically explains how he started and reveals the rather complex process involved in coming up with a mural. “Graffiti is my full-time hustle. I have 14 years of aerosol art

experience. I started doing backdrops for music videos with charcoal and paint at an early age before specializing with spray paint,” said Esendi. “First of all you have to conduct extensive research on the subject matter or theme, sketch the image and finally spray the desired image on the wall bearing in mind the elements and principles of art,” he explained. Esendi draws his artistic inspiration from his environment, bursts of colour and food. His deep passion to use art to spread positive messages also keeps him on his toes and well-motivated to continue with his work despite challenges. To him, graffiti is not just art or random acts of rebellion as the most people see it. He takes his work seriously, hoping each of his pieces will empower and enlighten the youth on political, social and environmental issues to bring about positive change in the society. He has managed to set a
niche for himself and inspire many children in the slums to keep them off the streets and help them earn from their talent. Children naturally mill round him curious and eager to learn from him as he goes about his business. “I intend to teach, inspire, make spaces beautiful, celebrate exceptional people, explore my talent boundary and help children learn and earn from graffiti,” said Esendi, a sparkle of hope flickering in his eyes. In his rich portfolio is the famous Lupita Nyongo mural at the Go Down, Mavulture at the City Center, the Mathare Wall, Concours de Elegance among others. “One of my most memorable pieces was the work our crew did at the Kenya Railways under the full glare of police, who supported us in our quest to spread peace before the general elections last year,” recalled Esendi. “Police in the world and over consider us artists a menace. It was
quite ironical to liaise with them to spread peace and tolerance in a country that was almost brought to its knees with negative ethnicity.” It has not been a rosy walk for him though. He has had his fair share of struggles, which have shaped him into the maestro he is today. Unavoidable circumstances made him drop out of the Buru Buru Institute of Fine Arts in his third year, expensive spray paints and long working hours also at times hinder his work. Despite all these, his infectious smile hides challenges and past struggles to reveal a world full of life, hope and possibilities. He is the true epitome that graffiti can be used for a noble cause and not just violence and rebellion which characterized the art in the past.

frustrated Jason is on the verge of breaking because of the cold distance between him and his girlfriend ever since she was raped four months ago. She lashes out at him a lot and retreats fearfully whenever he approaches her. Speaking to XAccess, 26-year-old Jason Mumia, a businessman confesses he has contemplated leaving her but he loves her too much to walk away. He feels guilty for thinking of leaving her after what she experienced. “She finds me repulsive and can’t stand me anymore. I have tried to comfort and show her I still love her dearly but she keeps pushing me away,” says a teary Jason. “I already feel like the worst and useless boyfriend for not protecting my girlfriend at a time when she needed me most and now I can’t even hug her,” he says. It is unfortunate that Jason is her emotional punching bag, not because the girl wants him to suffer but
because she is battling with how to cope with everything that happened. Giving up on a loved one who is having difficulty dealing with defiled dignity does not solve a thing. This does not mean you must stick with them to feel better but when they know they have your unwavering love and shoulder to lean on, it is helpful. After rape, most victims are mortified with shock during which they need time and support from loved ones to recover. Victims react differently after sexual attacks. Some get extremely hysterical, while others remain in denial and appear calm and okay but in real sense they are suffering. Coping with this trauma is the hardest part for a rape victim. Physical pain may subside but psychological wounds take long to heal. Renowned relationship expert Dr. Chris Hart acknowledges this is as very difficult situation for Jason’s girl to deal with on her own. “I would strongly advise that she talk to a good
counsellor / join a good support group if she hasn’t already - and if she has, to consider finding a better one. Normally people recover very well from such trauma with good help,” says the therapist. In Jason’s case, his girlfriend is withdrawn, fearful, angry and maybe embarrassed after the horrific ordeal. She is projecting her anger to him not because she doesn’t love him anymore but may be seeing him as a man reminds her of what she went through. He must understand that her personal safety was violated and left her vulnerable to uncalled for pain that will take time and strength to heal. She needs all the understanding and support she can get to walk through this one. “He should suggest to take her to a counsellor, and attend at least some of the sessions with her. They must avoid ‘politicized’ groups / counsellors and the ‘all men are evil’ types, and to look for a good psychologist Cognitive
Behavioural Therapist,” Chris Hart suggests. A sexually violated woman is not only overwrought but also harbours guilt and often blames herself for not being able to fight for herself. These feelings may cause her to avoid getting intimate with men. However, some things are inevitable no matter how super cautious individuals are. Jason’s girlfriend may be limiting contact with him because she is not ready for a sexual relationship. She has a lot to deal with and it is upon him to decide whether he will be patient and wait for her as long as it takes to piece her life together or not. She should also know that it was not her fault. For a victim to deal better with their trauma, she must receive psychological therapy and unconditional love/support from their family and partner. It is a whole new journey and she may take a some time to overcome it. Here is where love should conquer all.

He only wants me when he is drunk Dear DR X, I have been seeing this guy for 11 months but I am not sure what I am to him. He does not spend time with me in public a lot unless he is drunk. He only introduces me as a friend to his buddies but when he is drunk he tells people I am his girlfriend. All this is hurting and confusing more so now that I love him so much. My friends say he is not into me and so I should walk away before it is too late but I think I m already in too deep to leave. We have been intimate and I must say he is amazing in bed.
There are times he goes quiet for weeks without calling and when we meet he has this melting way of apologizing that just crumbles me and we make up with sex. Should I hope for anything? Charlene. Dear Charlene, It is almost a year yet you still don’t know what to make of your relationship. That is a red flag that you should have spotted a long time ago. If he hasn’t enriched your life ever since you started seeing each other then walking out is long overdue. Girl, save the last of your dignity and stop
being simply his sex buddy. Because he doesn’t love you and if he does then he shows it in a very sorry way. Actually he is not all that into you! Your relationship is destructive. Do not belittle yourself further by accepting scraps of whatever he is giving you. Great sex alone is not a relationship determinant. It should be all or nothing. A real man knows the worth of a woman. There is a great man somewhere out there for you but first you must take the leap of faith and leave this sorry case of a man, to find your nirvana .Best of luck.. DR X.

Kenyans should learn to keep off crime scenes Kenyans should take precautions failure to which they will be lured to death traps by curiosity (Juja Road closed after improvised explosive scare December 15, 2014). It is typical of Kenyans to mill around crime scenes. Police usually have difficult moments keeping them off cordoned areas
despite lingering dangers. They want to catch a glimpse of unfolding events perhaps unaware of the dangers they expose themselves to. Just recently, a man was accidentally shot dead during a robbery incident in Nairobi’s Kayole estate. The man was reported to have been standing
by the roadside watching police exchange fire with the attacker. During the twin blast at Gikomba market in which 10 people were killed, members of the public rushed to the explosion scene instead of fleeing. The drama was repeated on Sunday night when a police officer was shot dead in a confrontation
with thugs in the populous Dandora area. People milled to the battlefield instead of taking cover. Terrorists in Iraq, Libya and other places have always employed a tactic of luring more people to explosions. The first incident is usually less severe, but the second, after people have gathered, is usually
deadly. It was commendable for members of the public to identify a freshly planted explosive at Juja Road and alert police in time. But it will be better to keep off areas or any other crime scenes until advised by security agents. The scenes may turn out to be death traps that may worsen the already worrying death toll.

Top official reveals why he hang up K’ogalo boots Player management or lack of it may have been the key reason why former Gor Mahia Secretary General Chris Omondi quit on Saturday. While paraphrasing his words from a short message he sent for his resignation, Omondi said he felt he is not adding value to the club. “I am very sad not to see my vision for helping my team to higher strides not materialising. I want to thank the club fans for the opportunity to serve this
great club. “Unfortunately my vision is not in line with the majority of club officials, for a big club like ours, there should be structures well laid down which must be adhered to,” he said. The departure of two dependable players in Godfrey ‘Baba’ Kizito, top scorer Dan Sserunkuma and defender Geoffrey Walusimbi, with Harambee Stars defender, David Owino on his way out are some of the problems
Omondi believes need to be solved soon. “We don’t have a sponsor to start with, then letting such important players to walk free is one problem which has to be addressed with urgency,” he said. “My prayer is that the officials have learnt their mistakes and will tie down players to longer contracts in future. “Let’s look beyond the fact that we won the league,” he said.

Hamilton predicts seven more years on F1 tracks Lewis Hamilton says he wants to race in Formula 1 for another seven years after being voted BBC Sports Personality Year. The 29-year-old Mercedes driver beat golfer Rory McIlroy and athlete Jo Pavey to the award, a month after winning his second world championship. “I feel like I’ve got another seven years in F1,” he said. “That’s the goal. I got the first title in 2008 and now a second
title, so the sky is the limit from here.” He added: “I’ve just got to keep pushing.” If Hamilton continues in the sport for another seven years, he will be 36. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, 35, is currently the oldest driver in Formula 1, while Max Verstappen, 17, will be the youngest when he makes his debut with Toro Rosso next season. Last month, Hamilton claimed
his second world title, six years after his first, with a dominant victory in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It concluded a year-long battle with childhood friend and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg which featured a number of heated episodes between the pair on and off the track. Hamilton became only the fourth Briton to win two titles, joining Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart.

Ade looking forward to playing again Former Gor Mahia midfielder Kevin ‘Ade’ Omondi says he is looking forward to playing again after signing a two year contract with Sofapaka FC. Omondi who had a forgettable stint with South African club Moroka Swallows, who eventually failed to sign him says he looking forward to playing in the Kenyan premier league again. “I endured a very bad spell while in South Africa, it’s not a situation I’d wish for any player. The treatment I got was very bad.
“I now want to concentrate and give Sofapaka my best. They are a big club with great mentality,” said the player who was in the Gor Mahia title winning squad in 2013. Meanwhile Batoto Ba Mungu president Elly Kalekwa has welcomed the attacking minded player into the side saying he has a lot to offer. “His talent has never been in question. He is indeed a great acquisition to our side. We are also looking forward to bring in in new players to bolster our squad ahead of next season,” he said.

Days after resigning as Kenya Rugby Union Director Godwin Karuga, says the sport needs to be rescued from malicious people governed by selfish interests. Karuga who resigned on Saturday stated that: “With the current goings-on in the board, my continued stay as board level is not tenable. I have put in every effort from within to try and rectify the current situation, with little or no avail. The events of the last few weeks have made it all clear that the situation is not improving.” Karuga said he was still available to serve the game in any other capacities such as refereeing and coaching match officials as well as tournament organisations. He said not every official has the interest of
the sport at heart therefore calling for urgent intervention to rescue the free falling sport. “I fully support the audit by PKF that is underway, that was recommended by club chairmen. I am still available to complete the ongoing mega projects that we had embarked on.” “When you have officials trying to settle scores then you know you doomed, the old saying of the sport is bigger than an individual never applies sadly,” he continued. His resignation follows that of former Kenya 7’s coach Paul Treu, who threw in the towel on Thursday. In his resignation letter, Treu stated it was impossible to work with some members of the KRU board. He did not name the individuals though.

Tennis union to reward top players in Feb
concentration: A table tennis player during a past game. The first ever Kenya Table Tennis Association gala to reward top achievers will be held in February.
The first ever Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA) gala awards to reward top achievers will be held in February. The gala will celebrate top achievers and raise funds to send the national team for the World Championships set for April 28May 2, 2015 in Shouz, China. KTTA chairman Andrew Mudibo said the union will sell the 25 available tables at Sh20, 000 each. Mudibo said the union requires Sh6 million to send 10 participants, including eight players and two officials. “We are cash-strapped and need funds to facilitate the travel. We are calling on well-wishers and the Government to bail us out. This championship is important
as it well expose our players,” said Mudibo. The official said the association plans to send 70 per cent of youthful players for the world championships and All Africa Games to be held in Brazaville, Congo, next year. Mudibo was speaking during an event where the Kenya Charity Sweepstakes donated Sh250, 000 to support KTTA’s youth development project. He said the funds will be used to train youth at training centres the association has set up to tap raw talent. The Kenya Charity Sweepstakes Public Relations Officer Peter Njoroge said they were impressed by KTTA’s proposal on youth programmes. “We cannot promote sports if we
don’t not harness and nurture young talent, and that’s why we thought it wise to be identified with this programme,” he said. Mudibo said his pre-election pledge before taking office as chairman early this year was to initiate youth development programmes. He said the donation is a major boost towards achieving the goal. He said the union intends to send a bigger number of youth to the World Championships and All Africa Games to give players exposure at an early age. Africa Youth champion Peter Theuri represented the country at the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where he bowed out in the second round.
Mourinho explains why he Reds keeper Mignolet to allowed Lampard to leave stay on bench indefinitely Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says allowing Frank Lampard go last summer was the right decision for the club’s future. Lampard, 36, initially joined MLS side New York City on a two-year deal before signing for sister club City on loan until the end of December. City are battling Chelsea for EPL title and want to extend the impressive midfielder’s loan deal. “The project is to prepare for the next 10 years, not the next year - we made the right decision,” Mourinho said. Lampard left the London club after 13 years at Stamford Bridge in which he became the club’s record goal scorer with 211 goals in 649 appearances. He has scored six times for City, including against Chelsea in September’s 1-1 draw,. His latest goal came in the 1-0 victory over Leicester City last Saturday.
he’s our past: Mourinho and Lampard in better days.
Chelsea negated Lampard’s loss by signing Spain international Cesc Fabregas and bringing back former striker Didier Drogba. They also retained 34-year-old centre-back John Terry. “You can argue ‘You have John Terry and Didier Drogba’. Different. Drogba
is a striker that is coming to help and support the team,” Mourinho said. “John Terry is the best central defender in English football and it doesn’t matter how old he is. “To have a big player like Frank we would stop the development of other guys.”
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been dropped “indefinitely”, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed. Brad Jones replaced Belgian Mignolet for Sunday’s 3-0 fall to Manchester United and the Australian will retain his place for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup tie at Bournemouth. “I felt I had to change it because we have to find solutions throughout the squad to be better,” said Rodgers. “I said to Simon that it’s for an indefinite period.” Rodgers was pleased with the performance of former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Jones, 32, in the defeat at Old Trafford. And the Northern Irishman hopes Mignolet, 26, can recover his best form away from the spotlight. “Simon’s been fine, he’s a really good professional,” said Rodgers
“I spoke to him the other day and he accepted it and understood it. “It can sometimes happen to a keeper where you come out of the firing line and it can help you and allow you time to reflect.” Rodgers took positives from Liverpool’s creativity against United. The visitors carved out 19 chances to United’s 11 and had nine shots on target - all of which were repelled by goalkeeper David de Gea.
“The most important thing for me today was we looked like scoring,” said Rodgers after the match. “Over the course of the season, we haven’t been creative enough.” Liverpool dropped to 10th in the log after Tottenham beat Swansea in Sunday’s late clash. The Reds face a trip to Championship leaders Bournemouth in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
indefinite: Mignolet concedes a goal. The keeper has been dropped indefinitely by manager Brendan Rogers.

Thierry Henry announces retirement from football Former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football after a trophy-laden 20-year career to take up a media role. The 1998 World Cup winner, 37, left New York Red Bulls this month but there was speculation he might choose to play on at another club. “It has been an incredible journey,” he said. Henry is joining Sky Sports after being a World Cup pundit for the BBC. The Frenchman, who also played for Monaco, Juventus, and Barcelona, scored 175 Premier League goals and is fourth on the list of all-time scorers. Henry won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners, where he played between 1999 and 2007. He added the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and returned to Arsenal for four matches on loan from the Red Bulls in 2012, coming on as a substitute to score the winner against Leeds
in the third round of the FA Cup. When asked if he had considered another stint at the Emirates, he told Sky Sports: “You kind of never leave Arsenal. How many comebacks do you make? At one point it will turn out to be a bad move. We all love the first Rocky but I’m not too sure about the last one.” Henry, France’s all-time leading goalscorer, made his Monaco debut in 1994 and he helped the club to the French Ligue 1 title in 1997. “I would like to thank all the fans, team-mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French national team that have made my time in the game so special,” he said. “I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience. “I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part. “See you on the other side.”

AK bans two marathoners, six under investigation Athletics Kenya, AK, yesterday announced that it had banned two marathoners Viola Chelangat Kimetto and Joyce Jemutai Kiplimo for failed doping tests. The AK Medical and Anti-doping Commission chaired by Doctor Victor Bargoi which met on December 10, are also studying the tests of six others marathoners excluding Rita Jeptoo, for possible sanctions. AK however steered clear of the recent allegations published by the British Newspaper Telegraph last week that reported that up to 25 Kenyan runners had suspicious blood values .The report followed a documentary aired on German Television ARD that was in possession of the suspicious records that also included names of the runners. The IAAF’s ethics commission is investigating the claims. “AK would like to state that it has not received any formal communication in regard to the above said 25 athletes,” read the press statement. In the meantime the AK Medical and Antidoping Commission is studying six other runners Philip Kibiwot Kandie, James Maunga Nyankabaria, Alice Ndirangu, Elizabeth Jebet Chelagat, seasoned road runner Isaac Kimaiyo Kemboi and Bernard Mwendia Muthoni.
