The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre, Kenya Red Cross Society, Nairobi City Fire Brigade and National Youth Service experts were leading a joint rescue operation.

The building is reported to have collapsed at around 3am putting the lives of more than 30 families in danger.

“It took time for rescuers to get here,” a witness said.

By about 10am, rescuers said they were in contact with at least four people trapped under the rubble.

It has since emerged that the

owner of the building has disappeared as Nairobi County government officials mounted a manhunt.

Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke told journalists the building had not been cleared for occupation.

“We have learned that the collapsed building did not have all the required documents for occupation. It was still under construction,” he said.

Mueke blamed the owner for risking human life by continuing with construction after some tenants occupied the lower floors.

The incident comes barely a month after the release of a damning report on the safety of city buildings.

At least three out of four buildings in Nairobi are likely to suffer serious damage in case of a major earthquake, the report

by Questworks on the state of construction in the city said.

The design and engineering firm reported that contractors steal cement and use less steel to erect weak structures. It also blamed architects and engineers for failing to verify the quality of the works.

The ministry’s preliminary report has confirmed that Ah hurled insults at the flight attendant.

The episode caused public outcry, prompting her to quit her position in the family-run corporation.

Ah and her father have since publicly apologised for the misconduct.

Women in high heels appear more charismatic, experts confirm Women in high heels are seen as more charismatic, captivating and alluring than their flat-soled counterparts, new research has revealed.

Scientists from the Universite de Bretagne-Sud (University of Southern Brittany) have conducted experiments proving that men behave quite differently towards high-heeled women.

The results were published online in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour, mark a new discovery for the high heel and stiletto industry.

“Previous research has already shown that our physical features, as well as the colour and shape of our clothes affect

what others think of us,” say experts from ZME Science, a journal that features the latest developments in health, environmental sciences, space, and technology.

Nicolas Guéguen of the Université de Bretagne-Sud in France set out to test this theory and made relatively simple field experiments.

In the first experiment, it was found that a woman wearing heels is twice as likely to persuade men to stop and answer survey questions on the street.

Nairobi nurses threaten to go on strike

AP cop loses it, shoots five dead and commits suicide An Administration Police officer last night went berserk and shot dead five people including four of his colleagues at their camp in Shitsala division in Butere, Kakamega County before turning the gun on himself.

The officer used his G3 rifle to commit the murders last night. He then left the scene and committed suicide. His colleagues say they are yet to know what his motive was.

The dead include a sergeant and three corporals among them a couple.

The killer officer has since been identified as Mustafa Alando was on night duty and had returned to his house at around 8.30pm after he heard a commotion.

Upon arrival the officer reportedly found his wife quarrelling with four other AP officers and after some argument he opened fire killing the four on the spot.

The fifth person, a civilian who is the husband to one of the female AP officers was also shot dead after he

rushed to scene.

Western Regional Commissioner James ole Serian said they are investigating the incident.

“It might be hard to establish what led to this incident because even the attacker is dead,” he said.

The bodies were later moved to the St Mary’s Hospital Mortuary.

Incidences of officers committing murders have grown since 2011 when a police officer attached to Parklands police station here in Nairobi killed his senior, critically wounded his colleague before turning the gun on himself.

Constable Jacob Kipserem Rop was returning his gun to the armoury after night duty when he quarreled with his boss, Senior Sergeant Yusuf Hassan Hafi, and then shot him.

Colleague later cited frustrations at work and at home as reasons that could have prompted the constable to kill his colleague before committing suicide.

Nurses in Nairobi have threatened to down their tools in the next 21 days if the city county government fails to disburse their salaries for the last two months. The nurses who camped at the Governor Evans Kidero’s office yesterday claim that the industrial action is their only option after other attempts to negotiate the stalemate fail to yield fruit.

Patient in mystery death had not been admitted: KNH CEO The mystery surrounding the death of a 24 year old patient who ‘disappeared’ while undergoing treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital has deepened with the management saying he was not admitted to the ward. According to KNH Chief Executive Officer Lily Koros, the patient was undergoing regular treatment at the renal unit before admission and appears to have been led out of the hospital by someone since he was too ill to walk by himself. “The entrance to the renal unit was opened at 4am as is the routine to allow the next group of patients for dialysis. It is this moment that the patient could have walked out as the nurses were attending to the new set of patients and preparing them for dialysis,” she explained. LSK wants building levy scrapped off The Law Society of Kenya now want construction levy that was introduced by the government this year to be scrapped off. LSK has filed a suit to reverse the move which they claim the public, stakeholders and county governments were not consulted before its introduction. “There was no consultation by the Land CS with the public and relevant stakeholders. Ms Ngilu and the NCA, in imposing and collecting the levy, prejudice a citizen’s right to housing,” says LSK. LSK chief executive Apollo Mboya has said that the levy can only be paid if a service will be provided in return.

“The lack of public participation in imposing the levy makes it null and void.” LSK adds. The county government of Nairobi has oppossed the levy claiming it would affect property developers negatively.

Pakistani reinstates death penalty after school massacre As Pakistan started three days of national mourning Wednesday, horrifying details emerged on a massacre that left 145 people dead, most of them children.

Peshawar city was shut down after 132 children were killed there in an hours long siege Tuesday at an army school.

Markets remained closed as residents attended somber funerals across the city.

“Even the children are dying on the frontline in the war against terror,” said Khawaja Asif, the defense minister. “The smaller the coffin, the heavier it is to carry.”

A day after the massacre, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a moratorium on the death penalty for terrorism cases.

Taliban militants ambushed the school Tuesday, explosives strapped to their bodies, as they burst into an auditorium filled with students taking an exam.

They sprayed bullets on them and burned teachers alive.

Student Ahmed Faraz, 14, recalled the moment the terrorists struck. He was in the auditorium when four or five people burst in through a back door and started firing rapidly. “’God is great,’” the militants shouted as they roared through the hallways, Ahmed said.

They sought out terrified children.

“ ‘A lot of the children are under the benches,’ “ a Pakistani Taliban said, according to Ahmed. “ ‘Kill them.’ “ The ninth-grader got shot in his left shoulder and lay under a bench. “My shoulder was peeking out of the bench,” Ahmed recalled. “They went into another room, (and when) I ran to the exit, I fell.”

Seventh-grader Mohammad Bilal said he was sitting outside his classroom taking a math test when the gunfire erupted. He fell into bushes before running to the school’s gates to safety.

Pakistani troops eventually pushed through the buildings room-by-room, and confined the attackers to four buildings.

They found children drenched in blood. Some of the bodies lay on top of one another.

By the time the siege ended in the evening, military officials said all the seven militants were dead. It’s unclear whether they were killed or they detonated their explosives.

The casualty tolls don’t include the terrorists.

The ambush at Army Public School and Degree College left more than 100 injured, many with gunshot wounds, according to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani.

KenGen rights issue targets to raise Sh30b

Kenya Electricity Generating Company Sh30 billion rights issue will kick off early next year after the Government guaranteed to take up half the amount.

Addressing the parastatal’s 62nd Annual General Meeting, Energy and Petroleum Permanent Secretary Joseph Njoroge said the issue had

taken long due to talks between Government and KenGen. “We are in the final stages of getting the necessary approvals (for the rights issue). By the end of the first quarter next year, we will have kicked off the process,” said Njoroge. Managing Director Albert Mugo said they target to raise Sh30 billion.

“The figures of what we want

to raise have not changed.

The Sh15 billion is what we expected to get as cash from other shareholders because the Government will take its rights and in the various ways it is looking at. But combined we could go all the way to Sh30 billion,” said Mugo.

The money will be used to fund new geothermal and

wind projects to boost power generation capacity in coming years.

“We have commissioned 280MW at Olkaria. Our next project is Olkaria IV, Olkaria VI, Olkaria VII, up to VIII and even Olkaria I unit six which has 70 MW. In about two to three years, we plan to have 100MW of wind energy,” Mugo said.

More GM clients file vehicle defects claims A report by the claims administrator of General Motors (GM) says at least 42 people have been killed and 58 injured by vehicles that suffered from ignition switch defects.

The defect, which has been discovered in more than a million GM cars, could suddenly twist as one drives, making the car’s driver lose control.

The firm has received 251 death and 2,075 injury claims since August. Out of the claims, 100 have been deemed eligible, says claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg.

Feinberg was hired by the company to oversee its compensation fund. He has setup a website for those seeking to submit claims. Potential claimants have until January 31 to submit their papers.

The firm has set aside an estimated $400million (Sh36.2 billion) to pay out those who affected by the car defects.

GM has been accused of hiding the defects for more than 10 years even after receiving warnings from staff and complaints from consumers.

GM have been forced to recall over 29 million cars worldwide this year.

Mary Barra, GM’s chief executive, apologised for the fault in April at a congressional hearing over the issue.

Aga Khan varsity hospital group to support patients The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, has launched a support group for diabetes sufferers.

As part of the World Diabetes Day celebrations under the theme, “Healthy Living and Diabetes”, more than 50 people have registered as members of the group. The association will start operations in January.

Medical specialists, including educators, nutritionists, diabetologist, pediatrics and a clinical psychologist, conducted awareness sessions at the hospital’s lecture theatre earlier this month to launch the initiative.

The hospital also offered free diabetes screening to more than 180 participants during a launching ceremony earlier this month.

Dr Nancy Kunyiha, a diabetologist at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi said: “The number of people diagnosed

with diabetes increases drastically each year, and few have proper information about this chronic disease. Diabetes knows no status or race as it affects anyone. People who attend support groups have less depression and fewer complications as they interact with others who face similar situations and are able to give support to each other.”

“This group will help persons living with diabetes to be more positive in managing the condition. This can be seen through our cancer support group which has become very successful throughout the years since its launch,” she said.

The group targets people diagnosed with the disease, including family members, friends of people living with the condition and individuals who want to gather knowledge on the lifestyle disease.

Kenya Airways has received a Sh3.65 million Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) device to help in the fight against terrorism.

The device was formally handed by the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Christian Turner, to KQ Managing Director, Mbuvi Ngunze to enhance security at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The ETD machine will be installed at Kenya Airways’ hub facilities at JKIA in Nairobi and will improve the security screening of

passengers, baggage and on board consumables.

Ngunze was grateful for the donation and added that the airline will benefit from the latest technology to detect explosives on passengers in a matter of seconds.

It is behind this fact that we felt it ideal to sensitize and finally introduce these low cost equipment and tools to our farmers.”

“I give him Sh70 after selling one tray,” says the 32-year-old entrepreneur.

He sells 3 to 4 trays, giving Wairimu close to Sh800 per day.

Wairimu believes that diversifying her income by offering more services, including the wholesaling of eggs, will help increase her returns.

Having clear expectations, knowing your situation and a lot of love can get the couple through. A second wife needs to know what to expect from the moment her future husband pops the question. If she is at all going to be at all successful in the marriage, she needs to know that there are things that will make it difficult, and things that will make it amazing. The positive aspects of a second marriage are generally parts of marriage that are considered to be about the ‘bigger picture’.

The man is generally a bit wiser the second time around so he is over his philandering days, leading to a lower rate of infidelity.

A husband should work hard to make the second wife never feel second best by never comparing her with the first wife, and to love her no matter what! He should understand that it is incredibly hard to be a stepmother and love another woman’s children and have so little say in their lives.

Most importantly, he should work feverishly to love her, make her feel like she is the most important person in his world, and keep her as happy as he can. But can he? Recently, when Homabay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ abruptly died, rumours were rife about his wife Faith, with whom he sired two children, not being legitimate.

The first wife, perhaps out of spite took this opportunity to belittle Faith’s position.

The onus is on the man to be clear about his wives and put everything in black and white. The Kenyan constitution allows a man to marry more than one wife. It should therefore not be treated as dirty or illegal.

Ex-Tusker striker Emeka joins Shabana

Shabana will bolster their squad ahead of the 2015 Kenyan Premier League season after signing former Tusker forward Joseph Emeka (below).

The Nigerian becomes the seventh player to join the newly promoted side.

The development was confirmed by club organising secretary Stephen Kiama who said their aim is to finish among top eight clubs.

“We have opted to sign experienced players so that we can match with KPL standards and expectations.

Nobody should rule us out because we are going for the ripe, tested and experienced material. We won’t be punching bags but shall be the ones pinching bags,” he said.

Jeptoo’s fate to be determined on Friday

Marathoner Rita Jeptoo will know her kismet this Friday when her B sample results will be released after she challenged ‘A’ positive results carried out in an out-of-competition last September.The 33-year-old best female marathoner this year was found to have traces of EPO in her urine test.

If found guilty, Jeptoo may serve a long term ban from International Athletics Association Federations (IAAF). Some local athletes are

calling for fellow athletes found to have been involved in doping to face jail terms.

“The positive tests alone on athletes are bringing a lot of pain to other competing athletes, something which is a disgrace to the sports. Those found guilty should serve a long jail term in addition to the ban,” Asbel Kiprop said.

Apart from a possible lengthy ban, Jeptoo also stands to lose her recent titles which include Boston and Chicago marathon

Kenya to hire foreign coach to replace Treu

The remarks follow the resignation of former South African Treu who cited unfavourable working conditions that edged him out.

Derby boss says soccer divers deserve heavy penalties Steve McClaren says the Football Association should take retrospective action against players who dive.

Chelsea beat Derby to reach semis F

ilipe Luis struck his first Chelsea goal with a brilliant free-kick to help secure a League Cup semi-final place with a win at 10-man Derby.

Eden Hazard put the Premier League leaders in front and Luis made it 2-0.

Craig Bryson gave Derby hope, but Jake Buxton was harshly sent off before Andre Schurrle wrapped up victory.

Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma suffered a head injury and striker Didier Drogba hobbled off, but neither was a serious problem, boss Jose Mourinho said.
