Violence mars MPs’ Security Bill debate

Voting on the Security Bill turned chaotic as opposition Members of Parliament tore up Order Papers and threw them on the floor of the House. Earlier, opposition MPs delayed proceedings as they chanted ‘Bado Mapambano’ (The war is not yet over). Speaker Justin Muturi then ordered Sergeant at Arms to eject Senators Janet Ongera, James Orengo, Johnson Muthama, Boni Khalwale and Moses Wetangula from the gallery for leading the rebellion. P2

The US has dispelled claims that its trade ties with Kenya and Africa at large are gradually weakening as the continent leaders reach out for new partnerships with the East lead by China. US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec said trade activities are growing expeditiously more than before, adding that the two countries are mutually dependent in the new business deals. “Kenyan exports have grown quite rapidly to over 300 million dollars a year now. In Kenya this year, the United States did over $1 billion (Sh90.5billion) worth of trade two way,” said the ambassador. He said claims Kenya is getting attracted to the East for trade at the expense of Western countries especially US are unfounded. “US trade and investment relationship is growing in many respects,” Godec said.

Chaos mar House Security Bill debate From Page 1 He later adjourned the sitting for 30 minutes as he sought to calm things down. But when the MPs returned to the House at 11.35 am, chaos erupted after Jubilee MPs Kimani Ngunjiri, Muthomi Njuki, Alice Wahome, Moses Kiuna and Moses Sakuda engaged in a fist-fight with Cord Senators, forcing the Speaker to adjourn sittings to 2.30pm. Security was tight around Parliament and roads around it remained tightly guarded ahead of the debate. Contingents of police officers in protective and riot gear were

deployed at dawn to maintain peace after the opposition threatened to mobilise their supporters to protest the passage of the Bill. They have termed the Bill “draconian and retrogressive.” Entrance to Parliament, Harambee Avenue, Parliament Road and parts of Uhuru Highway remained under tight patrol of police officers from the dog unit. The Security Laws Bill, 2014, has elicited sharp criticism over some clauses which the opposition and political activists claim will encourage violation of fundamental human rights.

Among the issues activists are raising include phone tapping by the National Intelligence Service and prolonged detention of terror suspects as investigations continue. The Bill also seeks to ban broadcasting and printing of pictures showing dead or badly wounded victims which are likely to offend the public. But the Government says the Bill will boost respect for human rights by securing the country. The Government says horror images in the media glorify acts of terror and can easily ignite insecurity acts. The new law also gives Interior

Cabinet Secretary power to approve meetings, protests, and picketing. Parliamentary security committees met on Wednesday to discuss and amend sections of the Bill. The Kenya Law Society has joined the push for review of contentious issues before the Bill is passed even as opposition says it should be rejected in totality. In a joint statement, diplomatic missions also supported amendments to the law, saying they must tall with human rights provisions in the Constitution. “Protecting Kenya’s Constitution and upholding civil liberties and

democracy are among the most effective ways to bolster security,” read the statement in part. They, however, supported the country in the war on Somalia based Al-Shabaab. The statement was signed by High Commissioners Christian Turner (UK), Geoff Tooth (Australia) and David Angell (Canada). Ambassadors Robert F Godec (US), Joost Reintjes (Netherlands), Geert Andersen (Denmark), Rémi Maréchaux (France) and Johan Borgstam (Sweden) also signed the statement.

City Hall introduces E-clamping in parking bays

The world would be a better place with more women in power More than one third of the world believes that the world could be a better place if more women were in power. This means that one in every three people is confident that the state of global affairs would improve if more women were to join politics. A study by research group, Gallup International and the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Research (WIN) has found that out of 65-nation respondents, some 34 per cent support the further integration of women in politics. However, 41 per cent are certain that the matter is

irrelevant. Meanwhile, about 17 per cent insist that the world would be worse with more women in politics, and 8 per cent say they don’t know. Among other things, the global poll addressed the topic of politics, with one specific question asking respondents whether the world would be a better place if politicians were predominantly women. The international survey, which has been conducted annually for the past 37 years at the end of every year, is due for its latest release later this month.

Makongeni death toll rises to 4

Four more bodies were last night pulled out of the debris, bringing the death toll of Kaloleni Makongeni building collapse to four. St. John Ambulance Communications Manager Fred Majiwa said one of the bodies was retrieved at 2am this morning while the other two were retrieved in morning hours of Thursday. Majiwa says the joint rescue team had burnt midnight trying to search for the missing people still trapped under the rubbles. One more person was pulled out alive last night with some minor injuries according to Majiwa. “The person was treated and discharged, and we are hoping to complete this exercise. We only had a challenge with the lights going off at some point, but we sorted that out,” he said. The building, according to survivors and witnesses, collapsed at around 3am yesterday while its occupants were asleep. Officials from the Kenya Red Cross, MSF, and St. Johns ambulance are working to rescue the trapped victims from the wreckage, with help from the county government, KDF, NYS and the disaster management authority who are carefully removing the debris from the scene. Government officials present have condemned the illegal and substandard construction of buildings across the city to avert such disasters in future.

The Nairobi County Government will from next week start using electronic clamping (e-clamping) in parking bays. The system will track defaulters in the government bid to boost parking collections. The system will operate in a way that when a vehicle is not physically clamped for defaulting in fees, it will capture the accumulated penalty until the amount is fully settled. “Parking attendants use mobile devices to check vehicle parking payment status and if payment is not received within 45 minutes of the query, the system will automatically clamp the vehicle,” said Danson Muchemi, CEO of JamboPay. The devices will be accumulating at a rate of Sh4,000 per day with the government expected to introduce another set of 2,000 new clamps next week. Muchemi said only 43 per cent of motorists pay for parking daily due to weak enforcement of the rules. City Hall introduced E-parking as a way of raising revenue from parking lots.

Board to buy maize at Sh2, 200 for 90kg bag

The National Cereals and Produce Board is set to buy a 90 kg bag of maize at Sh2, 200 from farmers. The move follows President Kenyatta’s order to the board to buy the crop from farmers. Addressing a news briefing, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei told county governments to prepare to buy the produce from farmers to

ease their financial burdens. “County governments should invest in storage and drying facilities to reduce post-harvest losses. It’s important to establish buying centres near farmers to minimise transport costs and lock out brokers,” he said. Koskei urged county governments and growers to develop strategies of determining

genuine players in the value chain. He urged millers to cut cost of maize flour below Sh80 since maize prices have fallen by 40 per cent following a drastic reduction in the cost of electricity. “County governments should take up their responsibilities without waiting for the national government to

Giant tech company, Apple, has won a case in which it was accused of blocking music downloaded from rivals from playing on its iPods. A Californian eightmember jury ruled that the company did not violate anti-trust laws by blocking content of rivals in a case that could have cost the US company more than Sh90.5billion.

Complainants argued Apple acted against the federal laws when it updated the music devices in 2006, effectively blocking any content that was not bought from iTunes. The eight jurors sitting in US District Court in Oakland unanimously ruled that the Apple’s iTunes 7.0 update was a “genuine product improvement.”

Oil won’t reduce Kenya’s poverty levels, experts warn Kenya’s first commercial oil discovery in the South Lokichar basin could earn the Government Sh904 billion revenue over a 30-year production period. But the money may do little to improve the livelihoods of Kenyans. John Sisa, an analyst with research and consulting firm, GlobalData, says international interest in Kenya’s oil and gas sector has intensified in the past 20 months. Companies, including Tullow Oil and Africa Oil Corp, have made five discoveries since 2012. The enterprises plan to run six rigs full time in the future.

The Government has also indicated willingness to develop an early production facility by 2016. Sisa says: “This early monetisation of oil reserves would generate more revenue for the Government’s budget and would therefore act as a crucial component of economic growth.” But experts warn that the sector will not employ many Kenyans as many may have expected. Ann Weru, a human rights advocate for the Integrated Regional Information Network and Financial Analyst, Charlotte Lorick, says long-term employment gains from oil production will be limited. She

says the industry is not a traditional major employer. She says a new source of revenue may not necessarily translate into higher income equality or a drop in poverty levels because the wealth may not be distributed evenly among citizens. In countries like Brazil and South Africa, improving economies did little to close the income gap. As a result, experts have called for the right policies to ensure oil profits are “invested in a sustainable and equitable development of Kenya and do not simply accumulate in the pockets of the elite.”

MULTI-BILLION FORTUNE: Ngamia 1 oil exploration site in South Lokichar basin. The discovery of commercial oil deposits is expected to earn Sh904 billion revenue for the State over a 30-year production period.

Rouble value fall forces Apple to stop products sale in Russia Smartphone giant, Apple, will not continue selling products online in Russia because of instability of the country’s currency. The rouble (Russia’s monetary unit) has lost more than 20 per cent of value this week week after falling 5 per cent. One dollar was buying 71 roubles despite a decision by the Central Bank of Russia to raise interest rates from 10.5 to 17 per cent in a bid to

stabilise it. First Deputy Governor Sergei Shvetsov has described the situation as critical and has pledged fresh measures to try and stabilise the currency. The Central Bank of Russia has spent about $80bn (Sh7.2 trillion) to stabilise the unit but the currency has lost more than half the value against the US dollar since January.

Apple has said the rouble’s value is too unstable to set prices. It has, therefore, stopped sales of its iPhones, iPads and other products following the currency’s free-fall. Last month, the firm they were forced to increase prices in Russia by 20 per cent after the weakening rouble left products in the country cheaper than in the rest of Europe.

The Ministry of Energy has said that the second phase of city-wide lighting project will see Nairobi receive 57,000 lighting points beginning in January 2015. The project, which will cost close to Sh5 billion, will be completed by June 2015. It is the second phase of the ‘Powering Freedom’ initiative, a move spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy to light up the entire city in the coming years.

Powering Freedom was launched last week when the Kenyan government signed an agreement with Nairobi County to begin the lighting project Kibera, one of Africa’s largest slums. “This will ensure that Nairobi is at par with other cities of the world. It will also guarantee a secure and safe city for our investors to work in under the 24 hour economy which we are basically trying to promote,” said Energy

Cabinet Secretary, Mr Davis Chirchir. Speaking during the ceremony, he and Governor Evans Kidero thanked President Kenyatta for ensuring that resources are available for the implementation of the lighting project. He noted that the provision of lighting would reduce crime and increase the number of hours available for doing business in the city.

The past few months have seen many international food chains like Coldstone, Dominos, Subway, Big Square, KFC and many more open outlets in Nairobo. The newest advent of the global food chains comes just a couple of months after Kenya freshly computed its economic data and moved to become Africa’s ninth-largest economy. Most of the food chains have picked popular addresses in the City. They are mostly located in popular malls like TRM, The Junction, Galleria Mall, Capital Centre, Village Market and other plum Central Business District locations. The main target market of these

food chains are the youth and they have totally nailed it! This class fnds it trendy and cool to hang out at these food chains. The emerging middle class in Nairobi also offers a perfect market for the food retail business, making countries like Kenya attractive as new frontiers, which can guarantee maximum profitability with the least investment. The middle class wants high quality meals and great customer service at an affordable price. foreign food chains. The global brands are also known to consider infrastructure, cultural influences and trade regulations, among other factors. The magnetism of any locality around the sphere to fast food chains is often seen as an acknowledgement of the increase in the number of people with disposable income, a shift that investors in the outlets say has occurred in Kenya. Many global food chains are interested in Kenya but the supply chain remains the biggest challenge. Some have to import raw materials, making it very expensive. Some Kenyans, through

exposure on the Internet or via television, associate with particular exotic brands while others view frequenting foreign food joints as an expression of their new status. One clear signal of the changing tastes has been the mushrooming of shopping malls in the main cities, locations that fast food chains are now opening outlets. Kenyans are becoming a lot more globally aware, brand aware and quality conscious. It doesn’t mean that people necessarily have more money, but what people are spending their money on has shifted to leisure and social activities. This will drive the entry of more brands into the market. Once

KFC entered Kenya, other global brands like Subway and Big Square followed suit. Dietitian Alice Ndong’, however, is not keen on celebrating the entry of these eateries. She believes that if the trend continues, in a few years Kenya will join the fat nations of the world like Mexico, South Africa and the United States. “The amount of fat and GMOs in those foods is alarming and almost everything comes with a bun or chips,” said Ndong’. “We are courting a fat nation slowly.” But most analysts believe that the job opportunities that these brands bringing in are bound to help the economy rise.

P

ornography is everywhere these days. With an internet enabled device and just a few clicks, one can access a porn site and view its content to their heart’s satisfaction. Google has all the answers. A while back, Kenya was ranked top as one of the countries that Googled gay sex the most. We are a very curious country and with Google we can find anything. Before, it was a bit harder to gain access to porn. You had to provide proof that you are above 18, provide credit card details and even a kidney to just see legs! These days, a porn site just asks you to ‘please confirm that you are above 18 and it is legal to view such content in your country’ and gives you an option of ‘above 18’ or ‘not above 18’. Of course the teenagers will say they are above 18 and no one will be none the wiser. After all, nobody can see that they are not 18. Social media sites are also inundated with pornographic material. Going through your timeline on Facebook, twitter or Instagram and you will be bombarded with varying cores of pornography. Some pornographic material will be forced on to you because some friends feel the need to share explicit material on their timeline, others are hidden and in private groups and if you know where to look you will find it. Though some social media platforms like Instagram have strict rules about pornograph.

A while back, Rihanna’s profile on Instagram was deleted because she was posting pictures that were too explicit. Even the world’s largest superstar can be shut down. But people still find a way to post pornographic material by making their profiles private… Pornography is addictive. Everyone at some point in their lives has been exposed to porn, from the mild ones to the extremely harsh ones. But not everyone who has watched porn gets addicted to it. It starts out as an innocent

discovery mission—‘I want to see what this porn is all about’. Then comes the ‘I want to see more’ phase and the person continues to view more and more. With time, they start looking for extreme porn because they can not get high from the mild versions. They soon feel it is time to act out what they see and this sometimes ends up in rape and sex related injuries because their mind cannot separate acted out scenarios in porn from real life. This is the reason this generation is very explicit sexually and not afraid of orgies and all form of

crazy sexual acts. The growth of social media, though great, has also brought about the growth of pornography on such platforms. This has made it easier for young ones who are on these platforms unsupervised exposed to such ills at an early age. Although not entirely proven to be harmful, early exposure and over exposure breeds a generation not in touch with reality. Next time your timeine blinks with private messages, think twice before you click, you might end up being served porn.

Muslim clerics must condemn terror clothed in religious voices Muslim leaders and clerics must help fighting insecurity to prevent a possible anarchy or inter-religious conflicts (Uhuru urges Muslims to support war on terror December 3, 2914). The recent spate of killings have projected a war of Muslims versus

non-Muslims. Terrorists have been reported to be asking victims to either recite verses in the Quran or face death. This indicates that they are laying ground for an inter-religious war. When security officers raid mosques and other radicalisation

areas, Muslim clerics and other leaders condemn the Government. They have also condemned extrajudicial killings of provocative preachers, which have mostly occurred at the Coast, by accusing the Government of being behind the killings.

The leaders and clerics must rise and reproach acts of terrorism that have set Kenya on fire in the recent past. They are using Islam to cause internal conflict. Docile and seemingly tolerant Christians may at one point say enough is enough. The enemy will

win the war because Christians and Muslims will lose Kenya to religious apartheid. Though the freedom of worship is constitutionally given, it should not deteriorate to religious malice for the benefit of propagandists who have nothing to lose.

Retired soccer stars back calls for FKF 18-team premier league Former Kenyan internationals players have supported the idea of an 18 team top-flight league. They have also urged Football Kenya Federation (FKF) not to force the concept on Kenyans. They said federation officials to prove to Kenyans how an expanded league will generate financial support away from SuperSport and EABL annual sponsorships. “The concept of an 18

team league is a welcome suggestion, the only matter is FKF is forcing it down our throats,” said Kenya Footballers Association and Friends For Football ChangeKenya chairman Erick Stephen Obura. “Kenyans are yet to get a clear idea on why the league should be expanded,” Obura said. Obura has urged FKF president Sam Nyamweya to ensure the expanded league concept is handled with

integrity. Former Leopards midfielder Shoto Lukoye asked FKF to lure corporate support for Premier and Nationwide leagues. They have asked FKF to set Sh25million as the top flight prize money to make the league attractive and lucrative. Berdych hires ex-Murray tactician for 2015 season

World number seven Tomas Berdych has appointed Andy Murray’s former coach Dani Vallverdu to handle the 2015 season. Vallverdu, 28, left Murray’s coaching team last month after five years, in a split described as ‘mutual’. Berdych, 29, had been looking for a new coach after majority of rivals made

big-name appointments. He approached Ivan Lendl, the man who helped Murray to two Grand Slam titles, but said the eight-time major winner was “too busy”. Posting on Facebook on Tuesday, Berdych said: “Dear fans and friends... my new coaches for next year will be Dani Vallverdu and Azuz Simcich.

“Thank you to Tomas Krupa and David Vydra for a great time and fantastic work.” Murray met Vallverdu when the pair were teenagers at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Spain, and the Venezuelan worked closely with Lendl during the Czech great’s two-year stint with Murray.

club chairman Abokar Mohamed Sheik said in a statement on Tuesday evening. Sheik said the club authorities sacked Naser after losing several matches, including the General Da’ud cup and Super Cup last Friday. “We were the first Somalia club to bring in foreign players and we spent such much money to win all trophies, but instead we lost in many successive matches,” said the Banadir Sports Club Chairman. Banadir Sports Club last season won the country’s Nation Link Telecom championship. Mwaura formerly coached Nationwide club Eastleigh Youth and was Mathare Youth assistant coach.

The decorated volleyballer made the donation when MMA committee members called on him at his Nairobi office on Tuesday. The MP has previously played for

Cooperative Bank volleyball team and captained the national team in various matches. He has also served as secretary general of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF). Wanyama urged parents and teachers to encourage children to explore potential through sports and other artistic activities. “I’m a living example of a dedicated

European clubs campaign Herera denies fixing for May/June Qatar event Spanish league games

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar should be played between May 5 and 4 June instead of winter, Europe’s biggest clubs and leagues have said. Qatar was awarded the event in 2010 and leading Fifa figures have subsequently backed a proposed winter tournament. But a proposal by the European Club Association (ECA) and European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) says it could be played safely at the start of the summer. A decision is expected by March 2015.

World governing body Fifa said last month that the most likely dates for the tournament would be either January/February or November/December

2022. The organisation’s medical chief warned that temperatures in the Middle East state between May and September posed a “highly critical risk”.

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera insists he has never been involved in match-fixing. The Spaniard is one of 41 players, coaches and directors named in a matchfixing investigation in his homeland. “I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results,” Herrera wrote on his Facebook account. “If I am ever called to testify in any judicial hearing, I’ll be happy to attend, as my

conscience is clear.” The 25-year-old added: “I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch.” Prosecutors allege 965,000 euros was paid in cash by then Real Zaragoza coach Javier Aguirre. They claim nine players, including Herrera, paid cash to Levante players ahead of a La Liga game at the end of the 2010-2011 season. Herrera left Zaragoza to join home-town club Athletic Bilbao in August 2011,

before signing for United in June 2014. Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero is also named in the document. He joined the Welsh club from Mexico’s Monarcas Morelia in July and was in the Levante side that fell 2-1 to Zaragoza on 21 May 2011. It is alleged Levante’s players were paid to lose the match, which Zaragoza needed to win to avoid relegation. Montero’s alleged involvement is not described in the prosecution case.

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Mwangi Muthee has resigned. Muthee’s resignation comes at a time when the national 7’s team is at its lowest. After three tournaments, to the 2014/15 HSBC Sevens World Series, Kenya is placed 14th with 11 points with Japan, the only other core team in 15th with three points. In this lower half above Kenya are Portugal (13 points), Canada 14, France 19 and Wales 25. The man who has served the Rugby Union for four years resignation comes in the wake of similar moves by Union directors Godwin Karuga and Maurice Masiga and Kenya Sevens coach Paul Treu. In a letter dated December 17, 2015, Muthee detailed what has been an obvious scenario which split the Board right down the middle. It is evident that he has not been in control for the past two years. “I have resigned from the position of Chairman of the Kenya Rugby

Union. I am glad and proud to have served our game and country for close to four years. My efforts went into developing the game towards a world class status as well as its expansion throughout the country. I will always be very satisfied with my contribution and fond of all those in our country and abroad who gave me support in achieving the goals,” read Muthee’s resignation letter. It further read: “The events of recent past, however, compel me to vacate the position because I feel my agenda of driving the game further was being derailed. Most of all, in my opinion, some of the Board members’ integrity was not beyond reproach, threatening to bring the game into disrepute.” “With the foregoing; the deliberate opposition to consensus, decisions contrary to what in my conviction are not in the best interest of our game may continue to be taken and I will not be prepared to rubberstamp them,” concluded the letter.

Stars to play South Sudan in friendly Kenya’s national football team Harambee Stars is expected to play South Sudan in an international friendly early next year. The Kenya Diaspora Alliance (KDA) is organising the friendly match in its effort to promote a cordial a relationship between the country and the world’s youngest state. The KDA chairman Shem Ochuodho said they were engaging federations from both countries in the endeavour and once they are done with negotiations will release final details.

Ochuodho said they will use linkages abroad to fight poverty amongst Kenyans through sports by using their international network. The former Rangwe Member of Parliament (MP) said they have invited officials from the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), Athletics Kenya (AK) and the Kenya Basketball Federation to attend the Diaspora Networking Convention at Daystar University along Valley Road which takes place tomorrow. “For a start we considered officials from this sporting bodies as it’s through these

sports that Kenya has gotten visibility internationally. Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) accredited coach and referee who is also a member of the convention’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) Juma Kent said the network will assist the country benefit through exchange programmes, technical support and scholarships in the sporting fraternity. The Diaspora Networking event will bring together diasporans for the purpose of engaging and caucusing among themselves.

League One side Sheffield United have already knocked out Premier League teams Southampton and West Ham en route to facing 2008

winners Spurs. The two-legged ties will be played next month, with the final on 1 March Liverpool and Chelsea both overcame Championship opposition with 3-1 away victories in the quarter-finals. Brendan Rodgers’s Reds won at Bournemouth on Wednesday, 24 hours after Chelsea beat Derby County. Rodgers said: “It didn’t matter who we got in the draw, it was just important to get there.
