The 36 quarry workers who were massacred by militants in Mandera yesterday had been warned to move out of the area but declined, Deputy President William Ruto said today. Speaking on Citizen TV’s Cheche Programme this morning, Ruto said: “The 36 Kenyans... had been informed in time; they had been persuaded to come to a safer place to the town but unfortunately for one reason or another they did not.”

Mandera victims ignored warning From Page 1 He regrets that “we should have actually forced them out.” The workers, 18 of whom hailed from Nyeri County, were killed when more than 20 militants of the al-Shabaab terror group raided the quarry. The mine is situated about 15 kilometers from Mandera town. The victims were forced to lie face down before they were gunned down.
“Even after they were informed that this is not safe for you, you better move out of that place, they still insisted on staying there….. Unfortunately we learn a lot of lessons. We are re-strategising to make sure our security forces read from the same script to be able to protect Kenyans,” the DP said. Ruto spoke even as families of victims appealed for State help with funeral and burial expenses. The relatives, who camped at the
City Mortuary in Nairobi awaiting post-mortem examination on the bodies, asked the Government to support them to ensure they accord the kin befitting send off. They also want compensation to restart lives. “I was relying on my son for everything. He has left us with nothing and I cannot raise the money required. I request the government to help us take him home and if possible, help
us restart our lives again” said 75-year-old James Theuri whose son David Wachuga, 29, was among the victims. The deceased had just married before leaving Nyeri for Mandera last year. Ronald Mugoye, who lost two brothers, Shem Nyangaga, 44, and David Opati, 39, also appealed for State assistance, saying the family financial situation cannot allow him transport the remains of the
two to Vihiga for burial. Other than helping meet burial costs, Nyangaga left two schoolgoing children, yet the wife is jobless. “I ask the Government to help us take the bodies home as well as finance the burial ceremony,” said Mugoye. His sentiments were echoed by Tabitha Muthoni whose family lost her husband, a son and son-in-law.
Student averts possible school shooting rampage
scared lot: Residents gather on the edges of Fremont High School, Plain City, Utah, during a lockdown after reports that a student had been spotted with a gun early this week.
A student saved the life of a girlfriend and classmates when he reported a colleague to the authorities for loading a gun. The Utah student, whose name was withheld, told a school resource officer who arrested the armed teenager. Both are students at Fremont High School in Plain City. The 16-year-old suspect was arrested by police and detained in a juvenile facility. The New York Daily News reports that the suspect told police he was planning to shoot his girlfriend before turning the gun on other students. After frisking the students, police confirmed there was no other student who was armed. “We do not think there were any additional students who were armed. It appears to be a lone student,” Weber County Sheriff ’s Lt. Lane Findlay told KUTV. The suspect is set to face charges of possession of a weapon with the intention of assaulting others. He will also answer to charges of having a weapon within a restricted area besides having a gun yet he is a minor.
Uhuru urges Muslims to support war on terror President Uhuru Kenyatta (pictured) has appealed to the Muslim community to join the war on terror, saying they are better placed to volunteer information that can help avert attacks. He singled out elected leaders in North Eastern counties of Wajir, Mandera and Garissa and urged them to help protect the sovereignty of the nation. “Your interactions with the grassroots place you in a
vantage point for purposes of preventing attacks and building peace within and amongst our communities,” he said. “Let us never forget that as leaders, we are all sworn to protect the sovereignty of this nation,” the President said. He made the appeal in a live broadcast to the nation from State House on Tuesday, hours after al-Shabaab militants massacred 36
people in a fresh attack in Mandera County. Suspicion is growing that Kenyan sympathisers could be helping militants identify non-Muslim Kenyans who have become their attack targets in the latest killings. “Stay true to your religious tradition of tolerance and respect for all people. We depend on your support in our war against violent extremism and terror,” the President said.

Cabinet endorses works for Nairobi’s 24-hour economy
The Cabinet has received and endorsed the on-going rehabilitation works in various parts of Nairobi aimed at making the capital a 24-hour economy. In a brief sent to newsrooms, the cabinet which was chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday argued that smart and inclusive growth can only be achieved by encouraging a 24-hour economy. “That will require adequate public lighting to both industrial and residential areas as well as commercials centers, roads and public transport facilities,” it noted. The cabinet said the national government and the Nairobi county government have both partnered to refurbish some 416 streets with 24,000 lighting columns and 7,300 public lighting masts. That will cover 30 percent of the city at an estimated cost of Sh953 million. The remaining 70 percent will require new
infrastructure and an estimated capital investment of Sh7.923 billion, the brief said. That will include 12,959 public lighting masts and 54,029 streets lighting points. So far, the program has seen the relocation of all power lines obstructing road works in Kibera according to the cabinet. 45 lanterns and 30 public masts have also been lit up within the project area. The cabinet said the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) will also install 21 floodlight masts at a cost of Sh89.3 million in the area. On rehabilitation of roads in the city, the cabinet said refurbishment of 490 streets, lanes and and avenues is on course. “The project began on November 21, 2014 and by November 26, 2014, 97 main streets were fully refurbished,” it noted. Another 120 streets, lanes and avenues are expected to

Preacher charged as probe against mysterious family deaths continues A female preacher said to have been friends with deceased lawyer Paul Magu’s family was on Tuesday charged in Kiambu over her link to the mysterious death of the lawyer, his wife, a daughter and the disappearance of two sons. Ann Wambui Wanyoro is reported to have been with the family four days prior to the killings which are suspecting to have links to a religious cult. Police are investigating why Magu, prior to his death, had
started systematically transferring his prized properties including their family house, to Wambui. Detectives are also searching for a lawyer who had facilitated the transfers. “Under unclear circumstances Paul Muhiu Magu had intended to transfer ownership of some of his properties to the suspect (the preacher) in a will deposited with John Odhiambo as advocate,” it reads. Wambui, the affidavit indicates, had also performed what
was described by Magu’s house help as cultist rituals during her fourday visit to the family prior to the killings. The preacher was with the family between November 16 and 19. The court also allowed an application by the prosecution to hold the suspect for 14 days as investigations continue. Investigators are interested in questioning the preacher said to have been praying with the family as part of the investigations to unravel the mystery surrounding
the deaths. Magu’s three children disappeared on Tuesday last week after their father left with them from their Muthaiga Pipeline estate home for ‘shopping.’ Magu returned home two hours later but without the kids. The body of the youngest, Tiffany aged five years, was found in a thicket in Ruiru on Monday, nearly a week after she was last seen alive. Red Cross personnel have since joined the search. The deceased was 35-years old while his wife was 34.

Five arrested as immigration officials tighten noose on graft Five women were last evening arrested after being found with seven passports at immigration offices, Nyayo House in Nairobi. The five were arrested by EACC officials who had received complaints that there were brokers still operating in the area despite the strict measures that have been put there. The passports belonged to different persons who had applied for them. The commission and immigration department say they are investigating claims that a senior official at the Wajir County government is leading the brokers in securing the travelling documents and work permits for interested parties. This follows a complaint to immigration that the official has been brokering and illegally obtaining the documents. Immigration department closed its offices in Embu, Eldoret, Nakuru and Garissa in efforts to contain insecurity. The country’s missions abroad will only issue one-year passports. The Kisumu and Mombasa offices will close at the end of the current financial year or by June 2015. Immigration chief Maj-Gen (Rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa said that while devolution was welcome, the country cannot afford to devolve security which is a national government mandate.

Our Parts Department has extensive stocks of genuine spares which maintain the safety and reliability of our customers’ cars or trucks and the parts are covered by a warranty,” said Odhiambo. KQ, Born Free Foundation join war on rhino poaching WEDNESday, DECember 3, 2014
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has received surveillance equipment and funds from Kenya Airways and Born Free Foundations to boost its fight against rhino poaching. The donated equipment includes tents, GPS trackers and binoculars in addition to a Sh350, 000 cheque that will go towards training rangers in the KWS Rhino Monitoring Team. Speaking during the handover of the equipment and cheque at KWS Headquarters, Kenya Airways Marketing Director, Chris Diaz said that
the donation demonstrated commitment by the airline, and its partner, Born Free Foundation, to support conservation of wildlife. “The fight against wildlife poaching requires concerted efforts from all of us. This is the reason Kenya Airways has chosen to get involved in supporting KWS to fight this vice through skills improvement and equipment,” said Diaz. Kenya Country Manager of Born Free Foundation, Tim Oloo said Kenyans should take responsibility in the
fight against poaching and was delighted to be part of an initiative to protect the rhinos. “It is our responsibility and duty to ensure that the rhino is not lost on our watch. NUT BUSINESS: Green macadamia nuts ready for harvest. Experts say Kenya’s macadamia industry could bounce back after many difficult years as the booming global demand is pushing nut prices to record highs.
Macadamia farmers can turn fortunes with booming international demand
Kenya’s macadamia industry could bounce back after many difficult years, with booming global demand pushing nut prices to record highs. Local farmers stand to make even more as the current local demand is being driven by health conscious consumers. “The industry has become very competitive. The demand is so high while production is low and we are not able to satisfy orders,” said Mr. Simon Mwangi from Farm Nut, a local macadamia processing and exporting firm Farmers have greatly benefited from the development with on-farm prices rising to a record Sh100 per kilogram in June,
from as low as Sh20 in 2008. Currently, the nuts are being bought at Sh80 per kilogram. Processors and dealers with huge capacities and resources have been scrambling for the few available quantities from farmers. In fact, demand for the nuts in China, the US, Europe and Australia has been steadily on the rise over the last few years while local consumption of the nuts has also been on an upward trend. Experts have been forecasting even better times for the hardy nuts, leading farmers to ramp up production in anticipation of better prices.
Despite the high potential these crops hold, production of macadamia nuts in the country has suffered from poor rains which affect the plants’ flowering process. Mwangi says that flowering is only achieved in 55 per cent of the country’s crop. To fix this problem, the Kenya Horticultural Development Program has initiated a partnership with macadamia farmers to help renew the crop by grafting a new variety on to the old nut species. The grafted varieties take only three years to start producing harvests while non-grafted varieties take seven years.
Street vendors selling socks can make make as little as Sh15,000 or as much as Sh30,000 a month. According to an analysis by the Infonet Biovision group, hawkers can make between Sh500 and Sh1,000 a day, depending on how well their business is doing. For sock vendors, business is often better around the end of the month, when people have extra cash. Seeing as how mitumba socks have a short lifespan, there is always a market as sellers target those who need to replace their worn out pairs. Vendors may rent out space in city markets or sell their wares either
throughout the day or late in the afternoon, during rush hours. The price of their wares ranges from Sh30 to Sh100 a pair, depending on the quality of the socks they are selling. Cheaper socks are often made from light and inexpensive material while expensive pairs are made from tough and durable textiles. While it is not guaranteed that sales will be high all the time, a spot check of vendors by X News in the Central Business District has revealed that a vendor can sell up to 70 pairs in a single day.

Their claws are ready to dig into the flesh and tear the clothes of anything that will dare defy its wild beckons. They expect women to smile and stand aloof even when their rights are being infringed upon. They expect women to be mute when they physically, emotionally and sexually assaulted. After they spot their prey, they immediately strike without shame; they are out to kill. They enjoy seeing the horrified look on the poor woman’s face as she struggles to uphold her dignity, as she struggles to maintain her purity and once their mission is accomplished they wipe their dirty hands and evil grins off their faces, satisfied with their work and proceed to the next one. They work best in numbers, psyching each other up and immediately scamper once they sense a defender coming to the distressed babe’s rescue. But this oppression is about to come to an end. Women woken up! They will not back down, they could not take this offence lying down. He called on members of the public to play their role in protecting women. He, however, challenged the public to desist from capturing and circulating videos showing violence against women on social media but rather capture the faces of the culprits, which will help in investigations. Vice president, William Ruto called for legal action to be taken against those who disrespect the rights of others especially the rights of women and children. Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning, Anne Waiguru unleashed her full arsenal on perpetrators. She was charged up and vying for the blood of the culprits calling for imprisonment of men found guilty of assaulting women. The recent move by the Kenya police to form an anti stripping squad gave the fight against gender based violence a turbo boost. aking a cold shower on a hot afternoon can be refreshing. This is because it flushes out the excessive heat and sweaty odour, leaving you rejuvenated and relaxed. However, your joy shower can sometimes be suddenly interrupted by an abrupt gush of hot splashes of water. Sound farmiliar? The intermittent control of cold and warm water is usually from a flush of the toilet or opening of a laundry or a water tap somewhere in the house by another person causing an imbalance. Falling water pressure can also result in the change of the flow, causing the release of scotching steam. You can improve your showering experience to a rejuvenating one by installing an antisacald device. High quality decker timber will stand adverse environmental conditions, giving you value for your money.
There are a number of things that you imagine you can do yourself, instead of spending money hiring a professional. However, if you overlook some things, you may end up disappointed. For instance using a panga instead of a power saw is not likely to give the perfect cut. Use the right tool for the job to get better results. Kenyans have a tendency of bargaining on items and cunning sellers do not shy away from giving you what you ask for, get the best quality materials even if it will cost you more. For example high quality decker timber will stand adverse environmental
conditions giving you value for your money. Choice of material also matters a lot. If you intend to paint outdoor surfaces, you will most likely use oil-based coatings instead of water-based for longevity. Safety is the number one factor to insist on and donning the right protective attire such as gloves, gum boots, overalls and goggles will save you from accidents. Cutting material such as timber or carpets for fixing or fitting can be disturbing if you cut less or more than required. This will result in waste. You must measure twice or more and cut once because after cutting, it is not
reversible. Some surfaces call for proper preparation. Poorly prepared spaces will soon ruin your work rendering it useless. Doing it yourself does not qualify you to be an expert in everything. Some jobs demand expert skills for instance plumbing fixing roof and electric fault or wiring. When done right wiring will reduce the risk of poor connections that can cause severe repercussions. The rule of the thumb is that while it is great to be finally doing it yourself, make sure you follow the right tips for guaranteed success.

UoN new VC should prove he deserves the post
The appointment of Prof Peter Mbithi as the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor has drawn support from the institution’s workers union, students and scholars. The new VC scored more than 83 per cent. Education Cabinet Secretary
Jacob Kaimenyi has confirmed that he values merit by appointing Mbithi. But many challenges await the new VC of the biggest and oldest institution of learning in the region. The quality of education in the country is under question and
many employers have expressed dissatisfaction with more than half of the graduates. Having been the best among peers, the university should remain a cut above the rest in the region. It should not be a glass case of hooliganism, where
disgruntled students leave trails of destruction of property and sometimes lives. There should be alternative ways of airing views by disgruntled staff and students. The administration should accommodate feedback and dialogue. Mbithi’s decisions may not please
all, but remaining committed to principles of good governance and accountability must remain his main focus for the university. He must set his best foot forward and prove those who may be discontented with his appointment that he really deserves it.

Butali all out for hockey league bragging rights
financial support StanChart forks out Sh5.5m for Impala Rugby tournament P.14 The 2014 Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) league reaches the climax in the weekend as champions Kenya Police and Butali Sugar Warriors face off. The law enforcers won their maiden title in 2011, missed out in 2012 and reclaimed it last year. Warriors (formerly Kisumu Simba) have not won the title once in 2008. The two sides reached the finals after dominating displays that saw them whip opponents in semi-finals to set up a dream final. Warriors beat Wazalendo 4-0 as Police saw off Nairobi Simba 4-2 in the last four clashes. The Kisumu-based side are relishing their realistic chances of lifting the Kenyan title after more than six years since they won
back-to-back titles. “We had not played competitively for many months, but when we got going, it was as if we had not been away. We gelled well and showed our quality on the pitch,” Warriors coach Cliffe Okello said. In a squad boasting of internationals Frank Wanangwe, Emmanuel Simiyu and Kenneth Nyongesa, Warriors are all set to go for a third crown. Trademarks Police suffered a shock fall to Green Sharks but have since not lost a match. Head coach Kenneth Kaunda has urged his side to maintain the momentum and finish the job on Sunday: “We will only count the season a success if we win on Sunday,” he said.

Australia, India to play Brisbane Test after Adelaide Australia’s Test series with India will start in Adelaide on December 9 following the death of Phillip Hughes. The four-match contest should have kicked off in Brisbane on Thursday, but the Test will now start on December 17. The traditional Melbourne Boxing
Day Test is unchanged, but the Sydney Test has been pushed back by three days to January 6. The changes have been prompted by welfare concerns for Australia’s players grieving for Hughes, 25, whose funeral takes place on Wednesday. The left-handed Australia opener
died on Thursday after he was struck on the neck by a ball during a domestic Sheffield Shield match. The funeral service will take place in the Macksville High School sports hall, which Hughes attended. The event will be broadcast live in Australia and on big screens at the Sydney Cricket Ground and
Adelaide Oval. “Nobody should underestimate just what these players are going through right now,” said Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland. “These are difficult days and we need to support them in dealing with their grief. It’s very clear
that playing a Test right now is just too soon and we are reacting accordingly. “While this wasn’t done by design, it is somewhat fitting that the first Test will take place in Adelaide at Phillip’s adopted home ground where we hope the match can be a seen as a celebration of his life.”

Thierry Henry will ‘certainly’ return to Arsenal one day, insists Wenger Arsene Wenger believes Thierry Henry is destined to one day return to Arsenal. Henry has confirmed plans to leave New York Red Bulls in the MLS after four and a half years. He is expected to call time on his playing career at the age of 37 and is yet to announce his next move. “Certainly one day he will come back here,” said Wenger. “In what role, I don’t know. That is what he has to think about, what direction he wants to go in. “What I understand is that he wants to reflect for a while on how he wants to go into his next life. “The only thing I would like to say is that I made him start at the age of 17 in Monaco, he is today 37 so he had 20 years of competitive football and that deserves high respect and congratulations - not only for what he achieved but also on his attitude and his focus on football. “He has the right to reflect and think of what he wants to do now. “He is an Arsenal man. It was the best moment certainly of his life and of his career has been experienced here.” Henry spent eight years at Arsenal after signing from Juventus in 1999 and returned on loan from New York Red
Bulls for a short spell in 2012. He is the club’s record goalscorer with 228. Wenger does not expect the former France international to continue his playing career. “I don’t think he wants to carry on,” he said. “He has given a lot and has come out with an image that is fantastic.” Henry has spoken in the past of his desire to go into coaching when his playing days are over. Speaking last month about the
possibility of bringing Henry back to Arsenal in a coaching role, Wenger said: “I welcome people who have played for us to come back but they need to do something. Not an honorary job. “It has to be a job that is available and one where you get up in the morning and you have to do something. We live in a society where people only talk and do very little. I am for a job where everybody has a job to do.”

Shabana coach Gilbert Selebwa says the match will be timely as the team begins preparations for the Kenyan Premier League return after eight years. of course we want to win against Gor,” Nivaton said. The two sides last met in a competitive match in 2013, when K’Ogalo mauling Shabana 6-0 in a FKF Cup match played at City National Stadium. “This could be the time to get our revenge for the poor result we got last time out but the big one is coming next season. Balotelli apologises for post Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has apologised for a post on social media which appeared to contain anti-Semitic and racist references. Balotelli, 24, quickly deleted the post from his Instagram page of Nintendo computer game character Super Mario. Before his apology, the Italian had tweeted to deny the text of the post was offensive. The Football Association has asked Balotelli for his observations and given him until 18:00 GMT Friday to respond. Liverpool have said they will speak to the player. A spokesman for anti-discrimination said : “Kick It Out has been made
aware of Mario Balotelli’s Instagram post by a Twitter user and has now forwarded it on to the FA to look into the matter.” The picture posted had an image of Super Mario with the heading “Don’t be a racist!” The text read: “Be like Mario, he’s an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican. He jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew.” Responding to criticism on Twitter, Balotelli tweeted: “My Mom is Jewish so all of you shut up please.” He also described reposting the image as “my unlucky moment”.

Resurgent United consolidate fourth spot
RESURGENT: Manchester United’s Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini celebrates with Manchester United’s English striker James Wilson (up) after scoring the opening goal against Stoke City on Tuesday night. United won 2-1.
Australian cricketer Philip Hughes gets emotional send-off Australia captain Michael Clarke broke down in tears as he paid tribute to friend and former team-mate Phillip Hughes at the batsman’s funeral. Hughes, 25, died after being hit by a ball during a match in Sydney. His death stunned Australia and prompted the rescheduling of the upcoming
Test series against India. During the 80-minute service, Clarke said: “Phillip’s spirit, which is now part of our game forever, will act as a custodian of the sport we all love. He added: “We must listen to it. We must cherish it. We must learn from it. We must dig in and get through to tea. And we must play on.
“So rest in peace my little brother. I will see you out in the middle.” Family, friends, dignitaries and team-mates turned out for early today’s funeral in Macksville, where Hughes grew up. The service was broadcast live on national television and on big screens in Australia’s major cities.
Exercise, fitness not for sportsmen only Getting in shape doesn’t require a six-week Miracle built on shortcuts, fads and cheats. Sports personalities are taught that sensible daily routines are much more effective. “We don’t aim for radical changes,” cautions Julius Samuel, a manager and instructor at Penthouse Gymnasium in Nairobi. The desire to add brawn and bulk is one shared by ordinary gym-goers and professional rugby players alike. “The physicality of the modern rugby game
requires players to have a high level of muscle. Players need to eat relatively substantial amounts of the right foods to help grow and maintain this mass,” explains Dennis, a Kenya Harlequins player. Angela, a hockey player for a long time was among the many people who believe that weight training, sometimes referred to as strength training, only suits people who are looking to be bulky and is not ideal for those who are only looking to tone their bodies.
Gym instructors, however, say that weight training is an important component of an exercise regime regardless of male or female. They argue it should be combined with aerobic exercise to build leaner and well-toned muscles. Samuel, says body toning should be considered by individuals from both sexes for the benefit it holds in their life. Adding weight training is one of the key work- outs a person who wants to tone their body should think about.
Manchester United consolidated their position in fourth place in the Premier League - and cut the gap on the top three - as they beat Stoke City 2-1 on Tuesday night. Juan Mata scored the winner after Charles N’Zonzi had cancelled out Marouane Fellaini’s opener. United stay fourth, but are now just one point behind Southampton, who play at Arsenal tonight. After all the questions about Steven Gerrard’s future, Liverpool’s skipper played a pivotal role in their 3-1 win at 10-man Leicester. Burnley are now unbeaten in four games after their 1-1 draw with Newcastle at Turf Moor. Swansea took 78 minutes to break down QPR, and in particular an inspired Rob Green, at the Liberty Stadium before winning 2-0. West Brom lost their fourth straight game, 2-1 at home to West Ham, whose fine form continues – they stay in fifth. Aston Villa secured their first win in 10 games with a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace. Back to Old Trafford, United led when Marouane Fellaini headed in Ander Herrera’s leftwing cross at the far post. Stoke equalised through Steven
N’Zonzi’s low shot, but they slipped to a third straight loss when Juan Mata’s free-kick from the right sneaked in. Stoke’s Mame Biram Diouf was twice denied an injury-time equaliser. Skipper Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria were both missing from United’s squad through injuries and for long periods, the home side missed the pair’s attacking guile. Stoke rarely looked like ending a dismal run of 11 successive Old Trafford defeats, though, until Diouf and substitute Marko Arnautovic went close in the final moments. United controlled the tempo and deservedly led when Herrera was allowed too much time and space to pick out Fellaini, who outjumped Erik Pieters to powerfully nod in. Hughes was furious with the space that his side allowed Herrera, but his demeanour changed when N’Zonzi calmly guided a 20-yard shot past De Gea with Stoke’s first attempt on goal. Mata’s intervention moved United within two points of second-placed Manchester City, who travel to Sunderland tonight, while 13th-placed Stoke remain four points above the relegation zone.
