Nigerian cleric denies link to family murders

A Nigerian pastor has disowned reports that Nairobi lawyer Paul Magu, who along with wife and three children died in unclear circumstances, visited his church more than 20 times. TB Joshua has dismissed the claims as “true and ridiculous.” A section of the Kenyan media reported that Magu had on several occasions visited The Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN), in Lagos, Nigeria, before the family’s puzzling deaths. Nigerian cleric denies link to killings From Page 1 “The reports are untrue and ridiculous. It must take a religious spirit to believe and say this!,” he said in a statement. Joshua denied knowledge of Magu, saying he serves many faithful. “Thousands of people come here with their problems from around the world. This may be one of the people that came with depression and a spirit of suicide for deliverance,” the cleric said. The pastor said it was the second time he had been falsely accused after reports circulated on social media earlier in the year about him prophesying

the kidnap of President Uhuru Kenytta. “Kenyans, remember that this is not the first time false rumours have been spread concerning me in your nation. Several rumours were spread online previously that I had prophesied AlShabaab terrorists would kidnap and kill Kenya’s President. Why this hatred for me in Kenya? This is a religious spirit.” “I want to believe the religious people are behind this story. I have never been to Kenya before. This will not stop me from one day coming to Kenya at God’s appointed time,” he said. Magu died when he jumped

onto the path of an oncoming bus on the Thika-Garissa highway. His wife, Lydia, had been found dead a few days earlier. Magu’s three children disappeared on Tuesday last week after their father left them at their Muthaiga Pipeline estate home and went for ‘shopping.’ Police are investigating the reasons why Magu had started transferring his prized properties before his death. The assets include their family house which had been transferred to Pastor Anne Wambui Wanyoro. Detectives are also searching for a lawyer who had facilitated the transfer.

Surgeon sent back to class for removing wrong kidney A US surgeon, who has practised for 41 years, has been referred back to class after removing a healthy kidney from an inmate instead of a cancerous one. Dr Charles Coonan Streit was also put on a three-year probation for what the California Medical Board said was “an extreme departure from the standard of care”. He relied on memory to determine which kidney to remove from a 59-year-old inmate instead of scan papers taken in 2012. The board also slapped St. Jude Medical Centre in Fullerton a Sh9.01 million fine for the medic’s negligence after he left the CT scan papers in the office instead of using them for guidance. UPI.com reports that the urologist has 60 days to enrol in a wrong-site surgery class at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. The boars said the error put the life of the patient in possible renal failure since he has to undergo another operation to remove the infected kidney. During his probation, Streit will not supervise physician assistants.

Tobiko, Matemu 30-day deadline to Anglo Leasing team

The technical team formed to “facilitate successful prosecution” of the Anglo-Leasing corruption case has asked for more time to complete its work. The members drawn from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had asked for two extra months. But Keriako Tobiko and EACC Chairperson Mumo Matemu on Wednesday

granted the team one month. “During the second joint ODPP/ EACC consultative meeting held on Wednesday, the team while reporting significant progress so far made, nonetheless requested for two more months in order to accomplish the outstanding assignment,” a statement signed by Tobiko and Matemu reads. The statement detailed the outstanding assignment as “new leads to be pursued, outstanding

requests for mutual legal assistance, the number of crucial witnesses yet to record statements and the voluminous documents to be reviewed.” The team was formed on October 30 and was to report back in 30 days. But the offers have another month to not only report back but finalise work as per the latest directive.

Nazigi sacco apologises on stripping

The public would appreciate it if the government took care of the country’s healthcare crisis Public health is one of the most pressing issues in Kenya as well as in many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. In fact, 74 per cent of Kenyan adults believe that building and improving hospitals should be one of the most important priorities for the government right now. Experts from the international group known as Pew Research carried out a study known as the ‘Global Attitudes Project’ and discovered that, within the region, people want their governments to improve the quality of hospitals and

other health care facilities and deal with the problem of HIV/AIDS. The survey, conducted in six African nations, also found that there is a lot of support for government efforts to address access to clean drinking water, access to prenatal care, dealing with infectious diseases and improving as well as ensuring child immunisation. This research comes at a time when 38.8 million Kenyans have no health insurance and more than 50,000 people are dying from HIV/AIDS almost every year.

But when we ask the home guards they tell us they can’t provide us with security because we have refused to leave the forest.”He says. Taabu has also refuted claims by Deputy President William Ruto that they were warned to leave the area before the attack. “Who can warn you that you will die and stay there?Who did they tell.”He says.

Early this week, the High Court issued a temporary order allowing the fleet of public service vehicles belonging to Nazigi Sacco which operates on route 44 to continue operating. Al Shabaab car bomb kills four in Mogadishu United Nations convoy One day after executing dozens of non-Muslims at a quarry in Kenya, the Islamist militant group AlShabaab waged an attack in its home base of Somalia, killing at least four people in an attack on a United Nations convoy, police have said. Three of those killed in

Wednesday morning’s attack near Mogadishu’s airport were civilians and another was a member of the security force, Police Col. Mohamed Hassan said. “I saw at least two dead bodies lying in a pool of blood on the ground, and police arrived soon at the area and began shooting

in the air to disperse the crowds,” a witness named Sharma’arke told CNN. Two United Nations vehicles were damaged, a UN official said, but no UN staff members were killed or injured. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for what spokesman Sheikh Abdiaziz

Abu Musab called “a sacred bomb attack” targeting “foreign mercenaries and U.N staff.” Abu Musab said this action had claimed the lives of “several Somali soldiers and foreigners working with U.N,” but he did not specify a number of dead or their nationalities.

Nakumatt in Sh20m Xmas gifts project for loyal clients

Regional retailer Nakumatt has unveiled a Sh20 million Christmas gifts project to reward loyal shoppers. Dubbed the Nakumatt Christmas bonanza, the drive will run until January 5. Many prizes are up for grabs, including a Ford KUGA and five Ford FIGO cars. Speaking during the official unveiling of the programme, Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director Atul Shah said the company has registered a high purchase

of gift vouchers in the festive season. He says he is optimistic the rewards scheme will fuel the retailer’s expansion plans. “We have received significant orders for medium to high value gift vouchers from local banking and consumer companies who distribute them to valued staff members and clients,” said Shah. He attributed the growth in the number of vouchers to convenience as they are easy to administer, especially among

corporate clients. A survey conducted last month by the National Retail Federation on gift card spending showed 62 per cent of shoppers would like to receive a gift card. This makes them cards the most requested gift item in the last eight years. The survey also reveals that the average person buying gift cards during this year’s festive season will spend USD172 (Sh15, 600), up from USD 163 (Sh14, 700) last year.

Coca Cola to sell milk as soda sales tumble TACTICAL SWITCH: The world’s leading soft drink maker will start selling milk to avert losses.

Coca Cola, the world’s leading soda maker, will start selling milk to save the firm from losses. The company has reported dwindling sales in recent months. Coke, as the company and flagship drink are affectionately called, has decided to refer to its milk brand as FairLife The drink is being marketed as “premium” milk with 50 per cent more protein, 30 per cent more calcium, half the sugar of typical milk and a higher price tag. “We’ll charge twice as much for it as the milk we’re used to buying in a jug,” the president of Coca-Cola

North America told analysts at a conference last week. “It’s basically the premiumisation of milk,” Coke Spokesperson, Sandy Douglas added. Douglas compared the milk to Coke’s high-end juice brand, ‘Simply’. “If the new milk does as well as ‘Simply’, in a few years it will “rain money,” he said. So far, Fairlife is only sold in test markets. The soda giant plans to launch it nationally in the US in 2015, says a statement from a Coca-Cola spokeswoman. The enhanced milk is a joint venture

Grooming demands trigger growth in fragrance market Increasing focus on personal grooming has helped boost Kenya’s perfume, deodorant and fragrance market. The sector has grown by at least 4 per cent since 2012. Experts from global research group, Euromonitor International, say the growth has been boosted by the fact that fragrances are more widely available in many shops set up in urban centres. Instalment payment options that allow buyers to make small deposits over

time have also made the products more affordable. The latest Euromonitor numbers say cosmetics company Mary Kay led fragrances sales in 2013, followed by Jeanne Arthes. “Consumers tend to trust the brands and perceive them to be of high quality,” says a Euromonitor spokesperson. “The company has a strong distribution network with a long-standing presence. Mary Kay also saw the biggest rise in sales value

during 2013 due to brand loyalty and long-standing consumer awareness.” The sector employs hundreds of Kenyans across the value chain and is expected to grow at a steady pace. “Growth during this period can be attributed to the growing young population with a rising interest in personal grooming and the expanding retail market in Kenya allowing for ease of access to fragrances through their outlets,” says the spokesperson.

American milk consumption has been declining, along with soft drink sales, as the masses increasingly swap cereal and milk for convenient snacks like breakfast bars and fast food breakfast sandwiches. Retail sales of milk dropped 3 per cent in 2014 after falling 2 per cent the year before, states data from research group, Euromonitor.

Kenchic stocks more chicken ahead of festivities Poultry company Kenchic has increased its chicken stock in anticipation of high demand during the coming festive season. Kenchic Operations Manager, Philip Carolan attributed this to past experience and health conscious consumers who are aware of white meat benefits over red meat. “Based on past experience we expect hotels, restaurants and fast food outlets to stock chicken in large numbers during the next few days to be fully prepared for heavy sales for the

year-end holidays. Chicken is an increasingly popular source of lean, low fat protein which is good for the heart and is a natural antidepressant,” said Carolan. Carolan added that sales of chicken have seen an upward trend from small scale farmers who are taking up poultry rearing.“Rising sales of chicken meat have inspired thousands of small scale farmers to turn to poultry keeping. Kenchic is meeting the needs of poultry farmers by supplying day old chicks

from the company’s ultramodern hatchery at Athi River,” said Carolan. He promised consumers quality products as the company adheres to global standards of production and bird health. “The meat is inspected by a team made up of our own quality assurance staff, a government vet and meat inspectors. We also have a dedicated company laboratory and are routinely audited by international breeding companies,” he said.

Tanzania to set up embassy in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area

MISSION ABROAD: The Chancery, built in 2003 houses the US embassy offices. Tanzania government has announced plans to put up a 26-storey embassy building in Upper Hill area. The current Tanzanian High Commission offices are situated at the Reinsurance Plaza.

cityscape Kenyatta National Hospital

The Kenyatta National Hospital was founded in 1901, making it the oldest hospital in Kenya. Initially called the Native Civil Hospital, it was renamed the King George VI Hospital in 1952. It was then renamed Kenyatta National Hospital after the country gained independence from the British. The hospital originally had a bed capacity of 40 but currently has a capacity of 1,800 beds and over 6,000 staff members. It is houses the University of Nairobi Medical School as well as several government agencies. KNH is currently the largest referral and teaching hospital in the country, covering an area of 45.7 hectares.

Tanzania’s government has announced plans to build a Sh3.6 billion office building in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. The structure is the product of a joint initiative by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Tanzanian Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister, Mahadhi Maalimu said that his Ministry is “in the final stages of dialogue with the NSSF.”

He was responding to an earlier question from Tanzanian Special Seats MP, Ms. Kidawa Saleh, who wanted to know government’s strategy in renovating and constructing new buildings at the country’s embassies in foreign countries. Ms. Saleh said the buildings of the country’s embassies in foreign countries are in deplorable state and need massive renovation or construction of new buildings

altogether. The 26-storey construction will serve both as a Tanzanian Embassy and an office building. It will serve as a means to generate income for foreign missions in Africa as it reduces the operational costs for diplomatic operations. It will be located at the junction of Hill Road and Mara Road.

SCHOOLING THE

BOY CHILD

IN THE FIGHT TO END GENDEr vIOLENCE

T

he fight for the girl child has gained momentum and like wildfire, it is sweeping across continents. The boy child has not been forgotten but merely asked to make space and stand beside the girl. Historically, girls have been riddled with so much suffering and chained for long while the boy automatically enters the world knowing it is his world. He is not vanquished or restrained by tradition and can do whatever he wants. Now that the girl’s voice is getting louder, men think the shine is being taken away from them. Boys have not been neglected as alleged, but have just been merely requested to stand on the same pedestal with girls. Run alongside them and hold their hands through life if necessary. But human beings are selfish

by nature. That is why men are threatened by articulation of women’s rights and equality. Men take pride in dominance and subduing women, but now, that superiority fabric is wearing away and it seems to be rubbing them wrongly. Peter Gichanga, CEO of Masculinity Institute, which champions for and moulds male children corrects that boys have not been overlooked but are under pressure to deliver. “The boy has not been ignored but assumed to have all it takes to be who he should be,” he told XAccess. Gichanga states that since society assigned males with roles, they must live up to it or else they will be scorned. “No gender is superior therefore we must coexist but this gets strained because of the pressure immersed on the boy by society to perform,” he said.

fter fighting off hackers, becoming a mom and supporting big charity events, Habida has released a new song titled Super woman. The song talks about how women should rise up through everything because they are great. In the video, the singer is seen a top a motorcycle, smoking a cigar and coming out of the hood in a truck.

“The boy child has not been forgotten but merely asked to make space and stand beside the girl.” Martha Nyaga, a teacher at private school in Nairobi also agrees that boys have not been deserted. “When a mother gets a baby, she does not disregard her other children but only pays more attention to the little one because he/she is helpless at that stage, not that women are babies but have not had it easy so now it’s time to uplift them,” she said. “Recent stripping incidences were not triggered by indecency solely as argued, but men are frustrated by women’s mounting boldness,” says Mwenda Martin. According to him, men are trying to force women back to the box for them to be in control of their lives. Dictatorship and powerlessness as Martin shares, is what male egoism feeds on.

“Boys have been left on their own and they have to be ‘men about it’. They can’t cry so they resort to drugs and other vices,” said 37-year-old lawyer, Jason Mutua, who adds that men and women will never be equal. Jason also feels male politicians need to stand up for the boy child and ensure they do not lose their position in society. Has society really reduced the boy’s worth or is it just a case of bruised egos and attention seeking? Zulekha Mohamed says that society should borrow from religion especially the Muslim religion on how boys should treat girls. She told XAccess that their religion schools the boy

child from an early age to be sympathetic and loving towards all females. That explains why it is not common to find cases of violence and abuse among the Muslims. That said, it should be known that no gender is above the other. Physical differences stand far from defining individuals’ strengths and weaknesses. Society cannot afford to view gender division from such a narrow prism because none will survive without the other. Man and woman are eternally linked for the good of all. As we advocate for zero violence it is perhaps time to take the boy child back to basics and teach him to make love not war.

bling generation I

Is Betty Bayo Clubbing? P

ictures of Betty Bayo partying it up have been doing rounds on social media. Being a gospel artiste and all, being spotted at a club naturally raised eyebrows. It seemed as if the artiste had slipped off the wagon. But this was not the case, she is pictured with Fundi Frank at club Tribeka where she launched her latest video, Ti Mundu.

f you are yet to take a selfie, this is not for you. If you are looking for a dictionary to define bling, get out of town. We are talking about today’s generation those who care more about what other people say about them and the important people they are seen with. They are governed by silent codes that the more followers you have on social media the more popular you are. So they are constantly looking for ways to show how they are living it up. This generation posts pictures of money they intend to ‘burn’ at a club, places they have been to and the latest gadget they have. Our very own Senator Sonko and the number one YOLO club member recently posted a picture of up to Sh200, 000 on social media leaving people tongue tied. It is now acceptable to post and flaunt notes of money online to show your clout. No one wants to be left behind. They all want to show they have money too and go to the most exotic places. Are we still in sync? Do not get it twisted. See in planet bling, one’s character is defined by what they have. Young people are constantly working towards getting the latest gadget, designer clothes and cool cars in order to fit in. They need to look trendy and cool. But not all are lucky to be born into glitter so loans become their next best friend.

You are cool if you live in one of the leafy suburbs where dust is a rumour what with paved roads and no kiosks or vibandas in sight. Dating has also become more about what you have. Can you be able to buy expensive gifts? Take her on holiday to exotic locations? Take her out to trendy and up market restaurants and

clubs? If not then you do not have a chance with today’s girl. Ladies will want to post photos of where they were having lunch with a photo of the non-existent food on the plate at the restaurant with hashtags like #nomnom #lunch #greatrestaurant. Now that December is here generation selfie and bling

is in high gear. If you are not talking about vocations, holidays, cars and in other cases choppers then you have missed the boat. How far is the bling generation willing to go to be socially accepted? Your guess is as good as mine. But we can safely say the generation just grew wings!

UON girls warned against Facebook love The streets of Nairobi are always littered with young girls clinging unto old white men, who can easily be grandfathers or great grandfathers to them. Most of these relationships must have rooted from simple online chats on the various social media platforms. Some argue they are etched on money. One party reaps money while the other harvests sexual gratification, and when one of the parties is not satisfied, the relationship turns ugly. It is in this situation that one Ashley Peris Agumbu, a student at the

University of Nairobi, must have died after assault allegations from a white friend she had met on Facebook. The 22-yearold who was to graduate tomorrow (Friday) met Karl Singleton on Facebook slightly more than six months ago, little knowing the Briton could snatch her crown for the four-year’s hard work. After she accepted a friend request of Singleton, their chats quickly grew into romance before he moved to Kenya to be with her. But he soon started assaulting Ashley, who was diabetic. It is alleged the ‘lover’ flushed her diabetes medicine down a toilet leading to death from acute attack of the disease. ASHLEY ( Gone too soon)

Muslim clerics must condemn terror clothed in religious voices Muslim leaders and clerics must help fighting insecurity to prevent a possible anarchy or inter-religious conflicts (Uhuru urges Muslims to support war on terror December 3, 2914). The recent spate of killings have projected a war of Muslims versus

non-Muslims. Terrorists have been reported to be asking victims to either recite verses in the Quran or face death. This indicates that they are laying ground for an inter-religious war. When security officers raid mosques and other radicalisation

areas, Muslim clerics and other leaders condemn the Government. They have also condemned extrajudicial killings of provocative preachers, which have mostly occurred at the Coast, by accusing the Government of being behind the killings.

The leaders and clerics must rise and reproach acts of terrorism that have set Kenya on fire in the recent past. They are using Islam to cause internal conflict. Docile and seemingly tolerant Christians may at one point say enough is enough. The enemy will

win the war because Christians and Muslims will lose Kenya to religious apartheid. Though the freedom of worship is constitutionally given, it should not deteriorate to religious malice for the benefit of propagandists who have nothing to lose.

Karoki upbeat on 2015 China race chances

National Cross Country champion Bedan Karoki says he keeping fit as he eyes to represent Kenya in next year’s World Cross Country Championships. The Japan-based runner will have to pass the hurdle of defending his national title

if the dream of representing Kenya in China is to materialise. “I have to qualify first, that is why I have to keep fit and go for it. Kenya has very good runner in the cross country implying you have to be at your best,” he said.

Karoki says it was unfortunate that his two previous wins in 2012 and early this year were only used to select teams for Africa championships. “I will train in Ngong hills briefly before returning to Japan where I am based,” he said.

HURRAY! Bedan Karoki celebrates victory in one of his past dominant performances. The Japan- based runner will have to defend his national title if his dream of representing Kenya in next year’s World Cross Country Championships in China is to materialise.

Children heading footballs risk suffering brain damage

A leading expert has warned that children’s brains can be damaged by heading footballs at early age. Dr Ann McKee, a neuropathologist at Boston University, says: “I think there are dangers to the adolescent brain being exposed to the injuries.” The medic has done extensive research in NFL on head injuries. “Before the brain is fully

developed, before the neck and musculature is mature I think these kids are at risk,” she says. In US, a study of 24 football players aged between 16 and 18 found abnormalities similar to the effects of mild traumatic brain injury after a season. Former England and West Brom striker Jeff Astle died aged 59 in 2002 from a brain condition called chronic

traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is normally associated with boxers. Astle had been incorrectly diagnosed with Alzheimer before Dr Willie Stewart earlier in the year analysed Astle’s brain and highlighted a progressive degeneration of the brain caused by repeated head trauma. He said a number of footballers could be affected by the condition.

Woods return: Has 14-time major winner still got it? Tiger Woods returns from injury this week to an ever-changing golf landscape compared with the one that he once so thoroughly dominated. The former world number one has not played since missing the cut in August’s PGA Championship at Valhalla. Woods says he can still compete at golf ’s top level, despite admitting he can no longer drive as far as many players. The 38-year-old returns to competition at the World Challenge in Florida on Thursday, his first event since August following back problems. “Father time is undefeated. We all lose some things we could do,” he said. Valhalla also bore witness to backto-back major triumphs for Rory McIlroy that sandwiched a World Golf

TIGER TEES OFF: Tiger Woods of the United States hits a shot on the fourth hole during the final round of the 2013 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 14, 2013 in Augusta, Georgia. Woods returns from injury this week since missing the cut in August’s PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Kenyan coaches fail CAF exams Coaches Peter Okidi, Hesborne Nyabinge and Mickey Weche are said to have failed Confederation of African Football (CAF) examination they took in August and are therefore not fit to lead elite clubs. Okidi coached with relegated Nakuru Allstars, Nyabinge is with Western Stima while Weche is a former AFC Leopards assistant coach. The report revealed by

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) head of technical committee Elly Mukolwe adds that a number of local instructors failed to pass the test as well. The three were among 33 local coaches undertaking CAF Licence ‘A’ course in Machakos. Only coaches with this qualification are eligible to handle Kenyan Premier League clubs. In the instructors’ course

only Jacob Mulee, David Ouma, Twahir Muhiddin and Adel Amrouche passed. The rest did not make it. “We have handed certificates to those who deserve them. Unfortunately those who failed are dimmed unfit to lead top flight clubs. “In efforts to raise football standards in the country, the coaches have to lead the way,” he said.

FAIL LIST: Hesborn Nyabinge (L) Mickey Weche (C) and Peter Okidi (R). The three are said to have failed a CAF exam which renders them unfit to coach elite clubs.

Championships victory in Akron. That glorious summer spell for the Northern Irishman was reminiscent of Woods at his best and signalled the start of a new dawn for the game. The Tiger era was being superseded, with McIlroy the man to provide the benchmark. This is the harsh reality for Woods as he begins his latest comeback in his own 18-man challenge tournament at Isleworth this week. There is no doubt that his return injects a renewed buzz to the game. He remains golf ’s biggest personality and driver of ratings. But as a golfer he has been at best an also-ran for more than 15 months - and a non-runner for much of that period. His most recent PGA Tour win came in Akron in August 2013.

Here to stay: Leopards defender Jackson Saleh refutes Gor transfer links AFC Leopards defender Jackson Saleh has refuted claims that he has signed a deal with Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia. The player whose contract at the club is running out said he will remain an Ingwe player, a club he looks forward to playing for in the new season. “I remain an Ingwe player, because I have not joined Gor Mahia and was looking forward to helping the club perform better next season,” he said. “This is the club I will be playing for in the coming season. I have never thought about leaving this great club, therefore I will not be tangled into what people are saying. I want a better season with my club,” he said. Saleh, was reported to have signed a three-year deal at K’Ogalo, and is quoted to have said that he is ready to take on the new challenges ahead with his new club. “I have enjoyed my time at the den and I have gained

invaluable experience, but now I am looking forward to helping my new club with upcoming continental

assignments in the 2015 season,” the player was quoted as saying early this week.

I’LL STICK AROUND: AFCLeopards defender Jackson Saleh. He has said that he is not leaving Ingwe for Gor.

Nairobi Basketball Association chairman Ronney Owino has lauded a pilot programme that targets to launch a sports academy at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The Kenya Academy of Sportorganised project, will be under soccer coach Jacob “Ghost” Mulee. “The target age is encouraging. We need more of these camps to help players not just in basketball but in other sports as well,” he said. “Young talents will be being taken through sports training and taught life skills. “The idea is to identify potential talent and nurture them through holiday camps,” he said. The camp will run up to December 19. Seven sports disciplines are involved in the camp that has been partly funded by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and

Arts. The camp has attracted boys and girls aged 12-17 to take part in football, Basketball, karate, badminton, darts, skating and chess. Mulee, a former Football Kenya Federation Technical Director, will team up with Gabriel Mutuku (karate), Ann Njambi (badminton), Joel Adanje (skating), David Ngugi (swimming) and Hinga Githinji (chess) in the three-week camp The National Youth Talent Academy Chief Executive Officer Douglas Ratemo says the project will keep youngsters busy during holidays and encourage them to take up sports as a career. “This is a pilot programme by the Kenya Academy of Sports which was recently initiated through the new Sports Act. We want to replicate this across all the counties by working with governors,” said Ratemo.

Marooned Kiplagat eyes IAAF top post Beleagured long-serving Athletics Kenya president Isaiah Kiplagat will vie for one of the vice-presidency posts of world body IAAF in next year’s elections. Kiplagat has been at the AK helm for 22 years and is facing a vigorous drive to bundle him out of office. Up to 14 out of the total 16 branches are pushing to have him relinquish his position or face eviction.

“Campaigns were already underway for the post. I made it a while back and the backing I I’m getting is overwhelming,” he said. “My mission is to ensure the next glorious chapter is written.” Kiplagat is eyeing one of the vice-presidency positions that will be vacated by Britain’s Sabastian Coe and Ukrainian Pole vault world record holder, Sergey

Bubka. The two are expected to contest for the IAAF presidency when Lamine Diack, 80, steps down after 16 years in charge. “The experience I have in administration of the sport as president of AK and a long-serving IAAF Council member will help our new president in ensuring our most popular sport in the Olympics grows further,” Kiplagat said.

Managers warn Beckham over his Major League club progress David Beckham has been warned by Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber signs of progress are needed at his Miami-based franchise. Former England captain Beckham, 39, had two plans for a 25,000-seat stadium in central Miami rejected last summer. MLS will consider a report from the league’s expansion committee this weekend

and Garber indicated some decisions would be made early in 2015. “This can’t go on forever,” Garber said of the delays with Beckham’s franchise. The former Manchester United midfielder hinted in the summer he may come out of retirement to play for his un-named franchise. Garber says the league is not performing to expectation and its franchises are losing

more than Sh8.9billion “The Beckham group continues to work to try and find a stadium solution that they believe will put them in a position to succeed,” Garber said. The league will grow to 20 teams in 2015 with the addition of New York City FC and Orlando City FC followed by Atlanta and a second LA-based team in 2017.

Tour de France my 2015 main focus, says Froome Britain’s Chris Froome plans to compete in next year’s Tour de France after hinting he might miss it in favour of the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana. The 2013 champion described next year’s Tour as a “tough test” when the route was announced in October. But the Team Sky captain, who is training in South Africa, will make the race his “main focus” for the year.

“At this point in my career, I feel the Tour takes priority,” he said. With a shortage of individual time-trial kilometres, defending champion Vincenzo Nibali and Spain’s Alberto Contador start as favourites for the 2015 Tour de France. “I’m going to have to work extra hard in the mountains and spend less time on practising time-trialling,”

Froome said. “It is our responsibility to adapt so that we can be as competitive as possible.” Kenyan-born Froome has been challenged by rival team owner Oleg Tinkov to compete in all three of 2015’s Grand Tours for a prize fund of Sh70,250,281. “I know how hard it is to do two Grand Tours while targeting the overall win,” he said.

CAF President, Issa Hayatou, commended the Equatorial Guinea government for accepting to host the competition after Morocco, who were the earlier hosts, had pulled out due to Ebola scare.

10th Kisumu marathon edition launched Athletics Kenya President Isaiah Kiplagat wants the 10th edition of the annual Safaricom Kisumu City Marathon set for December 14 to grow a stride from the previous editions. Alexis Sanchez proved his worth to Arsenal once more as the Chile international popped up with a late goal to give them a 1-0 win against Southampton. Sanchez tapped home from close range in the 89th minute following an Aaron Ramsey pull back to break the hearts of the visitors who had been reduced to 10-men following Toby Alderweireld’s injury, after exhausting all substitutions. For 88 minutes, the Emirates Stadium had grumbled and grown increasingly agitated as chances came and went. Many were missed by Danny Welbeck and supporters chanted for Olivier Giroud to be unleashed from the bench. Elsewhere in London at the Stamford Bridge, Didier Drogba inspired Chelsea to a win over Tottenham to maintain the Blues’ six-point lead at the top of the table. Tottenham missed two good chances early on - Harry Kane hitting the bar then dragging a shot wide - and Chelsea went ahead when Eden Hazard finished neatly following a one-two with Drogba. The striker, who replaced the suspended Diego Costa, then netted with a low shot following a Hugo Lloris mistake. Substitute Loic Remy completed the win with a smart finish from 12 yards. At the Stadium of Light, Sergio Aguero took his Premier League goal tally to 14 with a double as Manchester City overcame Sunderland to make it three straight top-flight wins. Sunderland went ahead when Connor Wickham fired past Joe Hart while under pressure from Pablo Zabaleta. But Argentina forward Aguero equalised with a fierce 16-yard finish before Stevan Jovetic fired through former City keeper Costel Pantilimon’s legs. Zabaleta increased the lead with a fine chip before Aguero completed the rout.
