World’s top models wearing golden wings graced the British capital, London, early this week for the annual Victoria’s Secret Angel lingerie. The glamorous cat-walking, which started in 1995, is being held for the second time outside the US with a Sh1.8billion price tag. It has attracted 47 of the world’s best paid angels. Ed Sheeran lit the skies with a performance Think Out Loud as the models showcased the best figures on the catwalk in golden and other expensive medal wings and make-ups. US superstars Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande also performed in a show that was closely followed by at least 500 million people from 192 countries. Some of the outstanding models, including Brazilians Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio, displayed ‘Fantasy Bras’ created by jeweller Mouawad. Each of the bras was studded with 16,000 precious stones, including diamond, rubies and sapphires valued at Sh180.5million. Irish musician Andrew Hozier debuted with his Take Me to Church hit that rocked the event. The Victoria’s Secret market brand was created in 1977 and has at least 1000 stores in the US. Business Insider reports that last year alone, the flashy market leader made Sh602.95billion in sales. It entered the British market in 2005 where it has 15 outlets.
Judge nullifies appointment of Waithaka Waihenya as KBC boss The appointment of Waithaka Waihenya as Managing Director of the State-owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has been nullified. In his ruling today, High Court judge, Justice Nduma Nderi, said the 45 year age cap that was in force
before Waihenya’s appointment was discriminatory and against Article 27 of the constitution. Nderi ruled that Waihenya should vacate office immediately. He did not give stay orders, leaving no room for appeal against the ruling. The court instructed the KBC board
to start a fresh search for a new CEO for the corporation. Waihenya was appointed KBC boss in a Kenya Gazette Notice dated November 5th 2010 after acting as head of the corporation for five months. He has previously served the corporation as Editor-in-Chief.
In a notice, Minister for Information and Communication Samuel Poghisio appointed Waihenya for a period of three years with effect from October 25th 2010. Waihenya beat a field of candidates for the position at a time when KBC was leading the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
His appointment followed the sacking of former MD David Waweru and Secretary Hezekiel Oira over allegations of impropriety following allegations of corruption involving the contract to broadcast the Fifa World Cup 2010 matches live from South Africa.

Rich families can retain wealth for hundreds of years Poor people will most likely raise children who grow up to be poor adults, while rich people will pass on their wealth and financial knowledge to their children and it will last for generations to come. According to a number of economists, financial experts and research teams from different parts of the world, poverty breeds poverty and wealth breeds fortune. This kind of thing often continues across many generations and, in the case of the poor, the cycle is broken when someone finally decides to take action and lift themselves from poverty. When such changes occur, the process is referred to as ‘social mobility’. Social mobility is the movement of individuals, families, households, or other categories of people within or between social levels in a given community. Economists Davis, and Neil Cummins of the London School of Economics, as well as Gregory Clark of the University of California have found that socalled ‘common’ rags to riches stories are not at all common. In fact, they are quite rare. Likewise, riches to rags stories are also rare, given that the families the economists studied have been rich for more than 800 years.

Kenyans smoking Sh2.7billion tobacco every month, report Kenyans are smoking tobacco worth Sh2.7billion monthly, a recent study has shown. According to the latest Global Adult Tobacco Survey, an average smoker spends Sh1072 within the same period on cigarettes. This has caused a surge in non-communicable disease. The survey says the smoking accounts for more than half
of all admissions in public hospitals. The report further says more than 3.1 million adult Kenyans are exposed to second-hand smoking in homes, posing health dangers to them and the children. Children are likely to contact respiratory diseases like asthma and sometimes instant death for infants in
acute cases. It is against this backdrop that the national antismoking campaign dubbed ‘Tobacco Kills–Quit Now’ has been launched to help tobacco abusers refrain from roasting their lives and those around them to death. Currently, more than 2.5 million Kenyans are habitual smokers.
Two out of every 10 respondents said they were exposed to second-hand smoke in restaurants, while 17.6 per cent of those who work indoors reported exposure to second-hand smoke at the workplace. More than 86 per cent of those interviewed admitted to being exposed to secondhand smoking in recreational
areas such as clubs and bars. They are exposed to shisha, which is favoured tobacco and there are no restrictions on its use in the se spots. Shisha is particularly harmful because it produces a compound known as benzene, which causes leukaemia, a from of blood cancer.
A Kenya Defence Forces aircraft under the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) crashed in Kismayu on Thursday after it developed technical problems, according to the force spokesperson Colonel David Obonyo. In a statement to newsrooms, Obonyo said the aircraft was returning from a combat mission in Jamaame, Southern Somalia. “A KDF aircraft, while returning from a combat mission in Jamaame, (Southern Somalia), developed technical problems and crashed in the general area of Kismayu,” reads the statement. The statement did not however state whether they were casualties. Kenyan troops crossed into southern Somalia in 2011 to fight the Shabaab, later joining the now 22,000-strong African Union force battling the Islamists.
Kenyatta Hospital doctors face hard task of separating conjoined twins Favour and Blessing lie side by side. Blessing sleeps peacefully but Favour sucks her thumb and when she’s tired of doing that, lets out a cry. All the while, Blessing doesn’t stir. They are without a doubt beautiful three-month old girls. Twins. And unless you unwrap the sheet they’re bundled up in, there’s no way of knowing that Favour and Blessing aren’t lying side by side by
choice. Their lower backs are fused together. They are conjoined twins. Each is fully formed except for the fact that their lower spines and rump are fused together and they share an excretory opening. Theirs is a rarity with only one in every 200,000 births resulting in conjoined twins and even fewer being successfully separated. The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), in which they now lie, has
handled only five other similar cases in its history. But the plan, the KNH Head of Paediatric surgery Joel Lessan says, “is to keep them beautiful to the end.” The end being separation. And Lessan is optimistic they could survive it: “They have a 50/50 percent chance of survival.” But first the doctors want to wait for them to, “flesh out,” Lessan says. I say doctors because according to
Lessan, it will take a team of them to successfully separate Favour and Blessing. “We’ll need a neurosurgeon because we don’t know what nerves they share, we’ll need someone who deals in reproductive health because we don’t know which of these organs they share, we’ll need a plastic surgeon; we’ll need a highly specialised anaesthesiologist because we’re dealing with two
patients who just happen to be conjoined and we may need many more.” More on this But as things story at stand, the fusion is not life threatening and the doctors would prefer to wait for Favour and Blessing to, “flesh www.capitalfm.co.ke out,” a bit.

Japanese firm declines to recall faulty car airbags A leading Japanese airbag maker has rejected a request by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to expand a recall of cars containing an airbags brand that have reportedly killed five motorists. Authorities reported that some of the victims looked of the brand made by Takata looked like they had been shot or stabbed. The airbags can explode with shrapnel and nearly 14 million cars worldwide have been recalled. Air Force Lt Stephanie Erdman, whose eye was injured by airbag shrapnel, testified against Takata late last month. She said: “My passenger only had mild scraps and bruises. I should not have
been injured in the shocking and terrifying way that I was.” In US, the recall only applies to cars being driven in highhumidity states. In a letter to NHTSA, Takata insisted that the states that were covered under the recall initiative are sufficient. But due to a legal technicality, the NHTSA can now fine Takata up to $7,000 (Sh630,000) per day for each unrecalled car on the road. Expanding the recall to include the entire US, as opposed to Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other areas associated with high humidity, would add an additional eight million cars to the total of 14 million cars which are off the road.

Air travel tax axe to ensure UK families’ cheaper flights British families will by May next year start enjoying cheaper flights after the government pledged to scrap air travel tax on children. Speaking Wednesday while presenting his mid-year budget statement to parliament, British Finance Minister George Osborne said from May 1, 2015, Air Passenger Duty (APD) would not be charged on children under 12. He said the levy will be banned for all under 16s by 2016. Airlines welcomed the good news, but called for a total ban on the level. “APD must be axed in its entirety,” Willie Walsh, the chief executive of British Airways said in a statement.
CEO of easyJet Carolyn McCall said the company would refund APD for customers who have already booked tickets for flights after next May adding that the move will ease customer travels. Carriers have perennially opposed the tax arguing its removal will greatly boost the economy. Reuters reports that British travellers currently pay an APD of between Sh1,852 and Sh27,506 depending on flight distance and class of travel. Scotland, which is a semiautonomous section of the Great Britain had earlier been given an okay to cut down the tax. The scrapping immediately pushed
up airline stocks with easyJet’s EZJL, British Airways-owner IAG (ICAGL) and Flybe (FLYBL) gaining to trade at up to 2 per cent, 1.6 per cent and 4.7 per cent respectively at 1459 GMT. More Britons will travel with even bigger families at reduced costs, boosting tourism and hospitality sectors. According to the airlines, the abolition of this tax will increase the country’s revenue earnings from other sources up to Sh2.268 trillion within the first three years. If Scotland does this earlier than expected, her southern airports stand to gain against their bordering England competitors.
7 to 19-year-olds get Sh15,000 monthly pocket cash-report
About half of people between ages 7 to 19 receive cash from parents or guardians on daily basis. Some get regular ‘income’ of more than Sh15,000 a month. As hundreds of thousands of youth experience unemployment, their younger counterparts pocket up to Sh500 daily in pocket money. A report by the Kenya Youth Fact Book says while only 8 per cent of 7 to 19-year-olds have a bank account, 39 pc of them receive cash daily. About 30 pc of them are given cash on weekly basis and 14 pc on monthly basis. Only 9 pc of youth aged between 7 and 19 years get nothing at all. More than half of the individuals get Sh50 or less daily while a third get up to Sh250. The study also discovered that that one pc of the surveyed population get Sh500 or more per day. It was also revealed that 42 pc of 7 to19 year olds spend cash on snacks and sweets but the trend reduces as children grow older. Researchers from the Institute of Economic Affairs, who helped compile the data, said: “Up to 35 pc (of the cash) is spent on food, 26 transport, 21 on clothing, 16 on airtime and 8 pc on.

Embu farmers ditch synthetic pond liners for low-cost natural alternatives A group of enterprising farmers in Embu County is cutting costs by using earthen ponds as an alternative to the highly priced pond liners. In many parts of the country, the greatest problem for fish farmers is how to tame water from the ponds. As a result, the use of liner materials is particularly encouraged because they ensure minimum or no loss at all through seepage. However, these liners are expensive, with 300 by 300-meter material going for Sh100,000. Majority of smallholder farmers therefore use second hand materials, sourced from greenhouses or used by flower farms. Despite their usefulness, the effects of some liners have been toxic, with some containing pesticides that later kill the fish. In order to avoid such losses, a group known as the Wiyake Fish Farmers Association is using soil-based liners to avoid such losses. The 60-member group has perfected the art of mixing red soil with lime to create earthen ponds, with every member now enjoying fish farming and no water loss. Although the method is laborious and requires experience, the idea of having all members present while constructing the
pond has been quite helpful. The process begins with farmers mixing the lime with red soil then adding water to make a fine thick paste similar to the one used to make mud houses. Lime is used because it makes the soil sticky and makes the pond alkaline, creating a conducive
environment for the fish. Farmers then stick the paste on the surface, bottom and the sides of the pond. “We hope to roll it out to even nonmembers across the county and beyond as a low cost alternative to liners,” says group Chairman, Mwangi Kihungi.

Aga Khan University Hospital marks seven years of preemie care The Aga Khan University Hospital held an event to celebrate babies born prematurely (preemie) at the hospital. This marked the seventh preemie day of the annual event since its launch. The forum brought together expectant mothers, parents of pre-term infants and their children to encourage each other and share their experiences on preemie parenting. Medical specialists from the hospital including paeditricians, obstetricians and
gynaecologists and neonatal nurses gave talks and advise on trends in delivery care, interbio, preemie parenting, baby’s health, breastfeeding and pain management in children. Professor William Macharia, the Chair Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Aga Khan University Hospital, said: “These infants require specialised care to keep them alive as their body organs are not well developed.” In Kenya, approximately 200,000 infants
are born premature each year. In some cases these complications are caused by the use of tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs during pregnancy. Dr. Johnstone Miheso, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital says that “cases of pre-mature deliveries can be reduced in pregnant women by receiving antenatal care. This is routine care that women receive from healthcare professionals during their pregnancy.”

Cyber criminals take advantage of tech loving Kenyans At a time when Kenyans are embracing online shopping as a growing popular and convenient trend, the country has emerged as a potential hotspot for cybercrime due to the widespread use of digital payments. A Global Fraud Survey by research group, Ernst and Young (EY) indicates that though Kenyans value honest financial dealings, fraudsters, conmen and corrupt business owners are making it harder for trustworthy businesses to expand. With regard to the report, EY East Africa Chief Operating Officer (COO,) Herbert Wasike says: “There is a risk that Kenya could become a victim of fraud due to its own success in the uptake of Information Communication Technology (ICT).” Conducted in 59 countries across the
world, the survey shows that 62 per cent of Kenyan managers in the private sector see cybercrime as an intensified risk, compared to the global average of 49 per cent. Speaking to journalists in Nairobi during an earlier address, Wasike said that over a quarter of Kenya firms admitted that their organisations have experienced significant levels of fraud. EY East Africa Fraud Investigations Leader, Peter Kahi noted that “Kenya has a relatively strong culture of ethical and accurate financial reporting, which is a rare attribute in emerging markets.” However, he warned that in cases of corruption, middle level managers are the ones who engage in fraud because they drive the business.

IS FASHION TO BLAME FOR
“Times have changed, ten years ago or so, a fashion trend would pass by unnoticed but now women have become more conscious,”
OMG
Some primitive men around the country have appointed themselves the “decent dressing” police. They are stripping naked women they consider indecently dressed. But they are not stopping at the stripping; they are also sexually harassing them. “Am I not to wear a skirt or dress that flatters my figure, makes me look so good because someone finds it offensive?,” questions Janet Oriaso, a fashion stylist in Hurlingham. “Everyone, including men, is entitled to wear what they want, if you want to walk naked, feel free.” So who is to blame for the sudden rise in stripping cases? Is it the woman who has no sense of morality and decides
WOMEN’S WOES?
to leave the house wearing a miniskirt showing off her legs thus provoking the stripping? Or is it the small-minded man who thinks that he has every right to dictate what a woman wears because according to him, women should only wear “decent” clothes? Has fashion found itself at cross roads once again? Women and fashion have had a long term relationship dating back to medieval times. It has always been special and very delicate. “Times have changed. Ten years ago or so, a fashion trend would pass by unnoticed but now women have become more conscious,” Lynnet Anambo, a high fashion model said. “For example this season, the trend is sheer and if you
Nazizi in hit collabo with TID
Kenya’s first lady of hip hop Nazizi has collaborated with one time top act in Bongo artiste TID. The song titled Pressure sees the duo playfully and easily blend singing and rap to create a ballad that is easy on the ear. Nazizi looks great in a dress and still holds the house down with her flow and punch lines. The song is about a couple who fight but always finds a way to forgive and forget.
look around and you will notice that most women are wearing sheer tops that show off their cleavage, something that is not offensive, but fashionable.” In the early 19th century women wore Victorian dresses, those corset dresses that had a wide and long bottom, thus they never exposed their legs or rather their body parts to the public. However, they showed off their trimmed mid-sections to the delight of their men. Then in the 1960s came a British fashion designer by the name Mary Quant, who took it upon herself to encourage young women to dress to please themselves and thus miniskirts and hot pants were born.
Given the circumstances today, should fashion designers start designing longer skirts and tops that do not show off cleavage to establish a trend of decent dressing? “Fashion is neither to blame nor is it the solution to all the stripping menace,” said Vivian Achieng, a local fashion designer. “Those who strip women because of how they are dressed lack morals and have their own agendas and it’s not because they are fashion conscious. As a fashion designer, I create my clothes depending on the season and what I think will be appealing to my clients, be it a miniskirt or hot pants.” The term indecent dressing has been overused in the past
few weeks but what exactly is it? The online dictionary describes it as the deliberate exposure of one’s body to the public. This meaning is vague because what is perceived as indecency by some is perfectly okay to others. For example, in some communities, like the Turkana, women hardly cover up their bossoms. Fashion has come a long way to be blamed for such ghastly crimes. Some fashion bloggers have started an online campaign which will culminate into a fashion show to condemn the heinous acts and instead use fashion positively.

hen you enter any Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet, the first thing that welcomes you there is the divine aroma of chicken. Next, you are completely salivating! KFC is the largest international chicken franchise serving the world famous Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe for over 60 years. The service is fast, staff is friendly and the food is amazing. In particular, my favourite serving at KFC is the Hawaiian burger-It’s big and juicy. This place is great for people who do not mind
gaining a little weight. I hope you’ll enjoy this place, because I did. If you want to experience a divine moment then you should try out their most sought out after signature meal which is yes you guessed it, chicken. A piece of chicken will cost you a good Sh200 and a 21-piece bucket goes for Sh3000. Their Crispy Strips Meal goes for about Sh690. A fully loaded box meal costs Sh890. Zinger Wings are between Sh410- Sh940, depending on the number of wings you want. A burger meal will cost you
KFC
about Sh750. A Family Feast goes for between Sh1850Sh2450. The Streetwise package will cost you between Sh400 and Sh550. As for the sides, chips range between Sh220-410 depending on the size. A small Coleslaw is Sh180 and a big one Sh220. A mini loaf is Sh100 and a cheese slice is Sh40. A Pineapple ring goes is Sh80 while Ugali Nuggets and Gravy are Sh120. Soft drinks range between Sh100-Sh250. You can find a KFC in almost all the major malls and there is even a drive-in along Mombasa road.

here do you shop for your outfits or do you have them designed before a gig? I shop mostly online and yes, some I get designed to fit a particular gig. Who is your favourite fashion designer internationally and locally? Locally, VIVO and Wambui Mukenyi. Internationally, Michael Costello and Giuseppe Zanotti. What is the one fashion accessory that you must have while on stage? Tummy chain. Does your fashion change depending on the location of the gig? Of course, I dress to suit the gig, the place and the weather. Are there times you get it wrong, ever had a wardrobe malfunction on stage? Never had one but the good thing, is I always have a plan B in my car! Do you change your outfits during a gig and if you do, how many times? No I don’t! I do not have time for that, I am too busy on the decks.

HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19
cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22
aquarius Jan 20 - Feb
leo Jul 23 - Aug 22
Indecision may leave you helpless at a crossroads today, Capricorn. Others around you could be just as undecided regarding their direction. At the same time, you may feel pressured to take immediate action and you’re tired of waiting for others to make the first move.
Latch on to the expansiveness that comes when you connect with others in the social arena, Aquarius. Communication is a key part of the day. You will find that if you go with the flow, you will land exactly where you need to be.
pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20
Connect with the stable, grounding energy of the day, Pisces, but beware that tension may come in the form of fast talk and misguided information. People might be fickle and frantic. Wait for the dust to settle before you pick which road to take. Impulsive decisions are apt to lead you down paths that might not be the best choice for you now.
Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19
The expansive feeling you might be experiencing is apt to be squelched today as you get the feeling that you’ve lost touch with reality. Make sure you connect with real life, Aries, and do a bit of planning to balance your whimsical nature. Things that you haven’t accounted for might crop up and hit you, serving as a reminder that you need to deal with the here and now.
taurus Apr 20 - May 20
Walk to the beat of your own drum, Taurus. If you try to latch on to the glib, fast-paced information of the day, you might lose your voice in the crowd. On the other hand, if you plant your feet firmly and try to plan in too much detail, you might deprive yourself of spontaneous events that prove fulfilling.
gemini May 21 - Jun 21
This is today’s question. Why not choose both? Can you imagine being your partner’s lover while keeping your independence? Don’t be influenced by old models that force you to choose between these two ideas.
Your self-esteem may be challenged by a fast-paced talker or unpleasant situation, Cancer. Don’t accept things as they appear at first glance. There’s a much deeper meaning brewing below the surface, and you’d be foolish not to recognize this when it comes around.
Jump on board the fast train and see how far it takes you, Leo. You will be surprised how far you can go with minimal effort. Your grace and polite manners will help you navigate to where you need to be. You’re your own ship and there is a large gust of wind filling your sails.

virgo Aug 23 -Sep 22
Flexibility is important today, Virgo. Take the relaxed, laid-back approach. Trying to ram your ideas through isn’t the best tactic. Having tunnel vision will restrict you in many ways. Keep an open mind and be receptive to other people’s ideas and opinions.
libra Sep 23 - Oct 22
Things coming at you from all sides are forcing you to make a move, Libra. Try not to feel pressured into something you don’t want to do. A nervous restlessness is apt to take over your being and urge you to act. Don’t let other people’s energies dictate your actions.

Lock into the practical, grounding force that is not only realistic but also flexible. Attend to details and organize yourself, Scorpio. Be aware that you may need to alter your course in order to fit with the group energy. Try to work together with those around you to achieve a common goal.
sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21
Today is one of those days in which prosperity is much closer than you think, Sagittarius. You will find what you seek, but it’s up to you to take the first step to going after it. More than likely, you’re looking for solid answers to your deep and probing questions. Don’t let your inquisitive mind rest until you find the answers that ring true for you.

Stop bickering, focus on correcting security lapses The back-and-forth arguments among Government officials and terror attack victims over the massacre of 36 victims in Mandera does not help. Instead, it portrays Kenya negatively to the terrorists (Mandera survivor refutes
warning prior to Monday night attacks December 4, 2014). The Government should not engage in arguments and blame game with citizens but should instead revaluate the lapses to avert future attacks. As officials argue, terrorists plan
more attacks which are likely to find us ill prepared. Talking less is part of the winning the war because it will not distract security organs from the larger war against the criminals. Given that victims witnessed what transpired, people are likely
to believe them more than the Government which stands the risk of losing credibility. Winners attack quietly and results are all too evident. The Government should not be among those who shout at the enemy “I’m coming for you”.
Accounts of the fateful night should be re-evaluated and loopholes sealed to avert future attacks. Otherwise justification of individual positions lowers the dignity of the Government which should not stoop too low in arguments with citizens.

Three rookies in Kenya squad for Africa cricket championships Cricket Kenya has named three uncapped players in the squad for next week’s Africa Junior Girls Cricket Championships in Tanzania. Cynthia Samba, Emily Akinyi and Jane Kanini have emerged tops in three tournaments so far played this year. Kanini and Samba were among the top five bowlers in the just concluded CK Women Twenty20 championships alongside Esther Wangare who makes a comeback to the side. Wangare was omitted from the team that played in last year’s championships in Tanzania. Akinyi joins the team as a batter in the absence of Jackline Adhiambo who was not considered in the initial squad that has been training at Sir Ali Muslim and Ruaraka Sports clubs. Also left out is Mary Wambui who had
a poor season. The team will also miss the services of opening batter Jane Achieng who has graduated to the senior team. “We have blended youth and experience. We have some players with experience and so we thought having them in this event will be a good advantage for us,” Okinyo said. The squad will be captained by Quinta Aoko and assisted by Faith Mwende. Other key players are Rose Awour, Daisy Wairimu and Monica Ndambi. The middle order batting is expected to be marshalled by pinch hitter Amy Mkirema and Vanessa Adhiambo. Emily Wambui and left armer Edith Wanjiru will be Okinyo’s hope in picking up wickets. Okinyo was optimistic the squad will do better than last year after training together for longer spells than in the past.

Stars gear up for Mt Elgon cross-country showdown
DURABILITY: Florence Jebet Kiplagat wins the 2011 Berlin Marathon. Kiplagat is among elite athletes who will participate in the third leg of Kenya Cross Country championships on Saturday at Kapsokwony High School in Mt Elgon.
Chelsea plan Drogba backroom role when he hangs up his boots Striker Didier Drogba will have a role to play at Chelsea when he quits playing, says Blues boss Jose Mourinho. The 36-year-old Drogba, in his second spell at the club, scored as Chelsea beat Tottenham 3-0 on Wednesday. “The important thing is he is here and will finish his career with Chelsea,” said Mourinho, whose team top the Premier League by six points. Mourinho added: “It looks, for me, that he’s going to stay doing other things when he finishes his career.”
Drogba won 10 trophies in his first spell at Chelsea between 2004 and 2012, and scored 157 goals in 341 games. He re-joined the club at the start of the season after leaving Turkish side Galatasaray. Since his return to Stamford Bridge, the Ivorian has netted five times and set up Eden Hazard’s opener against Spurs. The league leaders are unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions. “It’s remarkable,” said Mourinho. “First of all, he’s a team player. He’s humble guy who plays for the team.”
The third leg of the Kenya Cross Country Championships go down on Saturday at Kapsokwony High School in Mt Elgon. Top athletes are expected to feature in the competition. Florence Kiplagat, the 2009 world cross- country champion, will be among elite runners to line up for the competition and will be joined by two-time world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat.
Athletics Kenya Western Chairman Francis Afundi said necessary plans have been put in place to ensure the event is a success. “We have received confirmation of participation by teams including the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police Service and Kenya Prisons. We have also a big team from Uganda and other foreign nationals,” said the official. Local stars, including Magdaline Masai, Titus
Mbishei and Lydia Wafula are expected at Kapsokwony as a way of encouraging rising stars from the region. Two of the six cross-county meetings have been held in Nairobi and Iten in North Rift. Although there is no crosscountry jackpot up for grabs, Sheila Chepng’etich and Emmanuel Bor are favourites to lift the senior titles after excelling in Iten and Nairobi.
Anti-doping body to probe Russia after drugs reports The world anti-doping agency said it will “fully investigate” after a German TV documentary claimed that Russia was funding a systematic doping programme. The documentary, broadcast by Das Erste on Wednesday, claimed a leading sports governing body was involved in covering-up the abuse. Wada said the claims would be “carefully scrutinised”.
Russia hosted the Winter Olympics in Sochi earlier this year and finished top of medal rankings. The organisation said in a statement it had “received information and evidence of the type exposed in the documentary.” The information was passed on by a neutral body under the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). “If action is warranted, Wada
will take any necessary and appropriate steps under the code,” the statement said. Russia has 67 athletes serving sanctions for doping offences. In September, Wada banned Gas Xenon after claims in another German TV documentary that it had been used as a performanceenhancing substance by Russian athletes at the Sochi Olympics.

Sofapaka demand better payment from Agwanda suitors
2009 Kenyan premier league champions Sofapaka have made it clear that they will not let their lead striker Enock Agwanda go for less money. The statement form club president Elly Kalekwa comes after the former Sony Sugar player was linked to a number of Kenyan clubs with Tanzanian giants Yanga FC leading the chase. “It’s true there are a number of offers for Agwanda. It’s good to make it
clear to all of them that as a club we got our conditions which ought to be adhered to,” he said. “We believe Agwanda is a top player and we deserve to get the best deal on him.” Agwanda was one of the leading scorers last season with nine goals to his name. The bulky striker, who joined Batoto Ba Mungu from the millers, currently has two years remaining on his contract.

Hockey season finale as Police play warriors
The 2014 Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) league reaches a fitting climax this Sunday when champions Kenya Police take on Butali Sugar Warriors in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash. Police won their maiden title in 2011, missed out in 2012 and reclaimed it last year while Warriors (formerly Kisumu Simba) have won the title once in 2008. Arguably the best teams in the country this season, the two
clubs proved it at the weekend after breezing past their opponents in the semi-finals to set up the dream final. Warriors beat Wazalendo 4-0 while Police saw off rivals Nairobi Simba 4-2 in the last four encounters. “We had not played competitively for many months, but when we got going, it was as if we had not been away. We gelled well and showed our quality on the pitch,” Warriors coach Cliff Okello said.
East Africa School Games champions Shimba Hills lead 10 other schools who have been shortlisted for the Safaricom SOYA awards’ school category set for January 16, 2015 in Nairobi. The list has six girls’ and five boys’ schools. Shimba Hills held the regional title after beating St. Mary’s Kitende 5946 in August in Tanzania. Shimba Hills School are also the national and Coast Region champions after beating Parklands Arya 74-44 and Aga Khan 144-02 respectively. They are also the national netball runners-up after falling to Ombabo School. St. John’s Kaloleni follow suit in the girls’ category after they emerged national champions, beating Kapkolei Girls from Nakuru region 5-0. East Africa volleyball champions Kwanthanze Secondary School
were also nominated. The school beat Rwanda’s GS Indangaburezi in straight sets of 3-0 (25-18; 25-18; 27-25). They also humiliated Malava in straight sets without dropping a single set in their campaign to successfully retain the national title. Kwanthanze formed the bulk of the national U-18 girls volleyball team that presented Kenya at the Africa Youth Championship in Gaborone, Botswana in April, this year. Players who graced the inaugural championship from Kwanthanze Secondary School are Ann Lowen, Lilian Lelei, Beldine Ajigo, Lilian Kavinya, Teresia Akai and Yvonne Wavinya. Kenya Prison’s team has signed Anne Lowen (Centre attacker), Irene Mbula (Right attacker) and Yvonne Wavinya from the school. Butere Girls lost 6-5 on penalties
to eventual champions Kabusunzu of Rwanda in EA School Games semis but took the national crown beating St. John’s Kaloleni 1-0. They are also the Nzoia regional title. Sinyolo girls successfully defended the East Africa Secondary School Games hockey title in Tanzania after winning all their round robin format matches. They finished third in the KSSSA national School Games after beating St. Joseph’s Kibwezi 3-0. Perennial national champions Malava Girls enlisted their name as nominees of the schools category after finishing third in volleyball at the Brookside East Africa Secondary games in Tanzania. Maseno School tops the boys list after a successful campaign to the rugby title in the East School Games, beating Uganda’s Hanna 13-3.

Stoke City vs Arsenal
Hull vs West Brom
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2014
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2014
Stoke City have in the past enjoyed this fixture by using their strength to stifle Arsenal’s attacking threat. Mark Hughes was employed to adopt a more attractive playing style, which makes them less of a dreaded journey for Arsene Wenger. Arsenal have been on decent form, despite only just beating Southampton through the outstanding Alexis Sanchez. Stoke on the other hand look out of sorts of late and haven’t won since their unexpected win at White Hart Lane. XSport: 2-1 Stoke Ann: 1-0 Arsenal Steve: 2-2
I believe Steve Bruce has created a decent side at Hull City. However, he will be disappointed with their start to the season and must be looking at this fixture knowing his side are capable of securing 3 points. They showed character to comeback from a goal down at Goodison Park and will be extremely delighted with their point. On the other hand, West Brom suffered a disheartening defeat against highflying West Ham after going 1-0 up. I believe spirits will be higher in the Hull City camp and home advantage could prove pivotal. XSport: 3-1 Hull Ann: 2-1 West Brom Steve: 0-0

QPR vs Burnley
West Ham vs Swansea
After a disappointing start to the season, Burnley are one of the in-form sides in the league and are unbeaten in four games. The Clarets find themselves outside the drop zone for the first time in months. They will head to London confident they can get all three points against relegation rivals QPR. The R’s however, are in the bottom three following their loss against Swansea. XSport: QPR 2-0 Burnley Ann: 2-2 Steve: QPR 2-3 Burnley
Following a string of draws, West Ham have won their two previous games and are lifted by the return of Enner Valencia, who has not started the past 3 games. However, they face a tough test on Sunday against a Swansea side who sit just below them in 7th place and make the trip to Upton Park on the back of a morale boosting 2-0 win against QPR. Aston Villa recorded a long overdue win in a tough game at Selhurst Park. Genoa have been in superb form in recent weeks and now deservedly sit 3rd in the standings and put their previous seasons’ problems well behind them. President Kenyatta calls on football stakeholders to end perennial wrangles President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged football stakeholders to put their house in order and stop wrangling for the better of the game in the country. His remarks come amid ongoing supremacy battles between Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Kenyan Premier League (KPL). While hosting GOtv
Shield champions and KPL runners-up Sofapaka FC at State House Nairobi Thursday, the Head of State blamed the country’s football management for mismanaging local talent. “To those who are charged with management of football in this country we also ask you to get your house in order. You’ve been charged with the
management of this sport for the benefit and on behalf of the people of this Republic. “We ask them also to do what it is they must do to promote the sport. All these wrangles and financial issues that consistently keep cropping up are things they should put in the past,” he said.

Former United States teammates Brad Friedel and Tim Howard have become embroiled in an argument about an incident from more than a decade ago. In his forthcoming autobiography, Everton goalkeeper Howard, 35, claims Friedel actively tried to block his move to Manchester United in 2003. Friedel, though, has denied the allegation and is demanding an apology from the current US number one. “It is complete garbage,” said the 43-year old. “I never sabotaged and I never stood in the way of Tim Howard getting a work permit. This is ludicrous.” Howard completed a shs300m move from Major League Soccer side Metrostars to United 11 years ago, but needed a work permit. In his book The Keeper, Howard says Friedel, then playing for Blackburn, refused to endorse his application with a letter of support. “The legal team at Manchester United told me that Brad hadn’t merely refused to sign a statement on my behalf, he had actively tried to block my transfer,”
Howard writes in the book. “He’d written to the appeals committee suggesting that I shouldn’t be given a work permit at all.” Friedel says he was asked to sign a letter of support by then US coach Bruce Arena, but did not because he felt it was inaccurate. “It said that I had been in direct competition with Tim Howard for the starting job on the USA national team for the last two years, when anyone who follows soccer knew it was between Kasey Keller and I,” he added. “Yes, I refused to sign that. We got the letter and said ‘We
have to change this, because this isn’t true’. We made our changes and sent it back. They didn’t like what I was going to sign so they didn’t use it. And that was the end of the matter.” The Professional Footballers’ Association said on Wednesday it had been asked to confirm that it “did not receive any correspondence” from Friedel with regard to denying Howard a work permit. Friedel played for the United States between 1992 and 2005, while Howard has played for the national team since 2002.
