Adoption law shock for 23 Danish couples

Towards the end of last month, the Cabinet approved an indefinite ban on adoption of Kenyan children by foreigners. The move was a response to concerns over increased cases of child trafficking through the abuse of Kenya’s adoption processes by foreigners.

The move has rattled 23 Danish couples, who were in the process of adopting Kenyan children. Four Danish families are already in the country hoping to collect adopted children as another 19 wait in the hope of taking up Kenyan children. It is not clear whether the four couples

that have gone through the adoption process will be allowed to fly out with children after the ban. But Danish adoption agency AC International Child has told them to get ready for disappointment.

Adoption law shock for Danish couples From Page 1 “There is a theoretical risk they are not allowed to travel with their children – this might not happen but we cannot rule it out,” AC International Child Director Keld Damsbo, told a Danish newspaper.

The Kenyan agency for the care, protection, welfare and adoption of children, Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK), said the ban was in the best interests of the children. “It is the right of Kenyan children to be adopted

within Kenyan borders. At CWSK, we have over 250 local families that are eligible for adoption,” said Penelope Wanjiku, a director at CWSK. Kenya is the latest country to close opportunities for the adoption of her children in foreign soil. The country

joins the likes of Nigeria, which imposed a ban on foreign adoptions following allegations of corruption, forgery and inability of authorities to supervise the process. While effecting the ban, the Cabinet noted that Kenyan

laws do not define child sale, procuring, trade and laundering as part of child trafficking. “This has in effect put Kenyan children at high risk as it creates a loophole for fraudulent, vested interests, masquerading through

ownership of children homes, adoption agencies and legal firms representing children, and adopters, to engage in the unscrupulous business of human trafficking under the guise of charity,” read part of a statement from the Cabinet.

Streets of major cities around the world were at the weekend spotted in red on an early Christmas Santa Run drive to raise funds for charity. In Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, tens of thousands stunned the streets to raise cash for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. Hundreds of other amateur runners dressed as Santa Claus gathered in London’s Battersea Park to run for about seven kilometres to raise cash for Disability Snowsport. A swarm of the athletes clogged Sydney city for the event, which is part of a national funds drive to support the sick and disadvantaged children in Australia. But running was not enough fun for some participants in Germany: they flew 98 metres from a hotel in an event organised by Jochen Schweizer. Other partakers at Kuta, Bali, Indonesia, went skating to raise the much need funds for orphans, in this yearly event. In Boston, non-professionals never saw the need of full Santa Claus regalia and simply spotted bodies with red or piece of the attire in the 25th edition. Supporters of soccer in England wore blue for Everton as they mingled with rival Liverpool fans who were in red to run in one direction as opposed to the pitch. Dogs joined participants in collecting cash for awareness on Autism as they joined their masters in the Xi’an, China race.

70 Ethiopian migrants drown off Yemen coast A boat carrying African migrants has sunk off Yemen’s western coast, killing 70 people, Yemeni officials say. The boat, carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants, sank off Yemen’s alMakha port under strong winds and rough waves, security officials said.

Tens of thousands attempted to cross the Red Sea into Yemen every year, often in rickety, overcrowded vessels. Hundreds have died making the journey. Yemen is viewed by many migrants as a gateway to the Middle East or Europe. The latest sinking occurred on

Saturday, with reports of the incident emerging on Sunday. The Red Sea crossing between the Horn of Africa and Yemen is one of the world’s major migration routes, BBC Arab Affairs Editor Alan Johnston says. Migrants dream of finding jobs and better lives in rich places like Saudi

Arabia - but they are in the hands of unscrupulous people smugglers and, too often, never reach the Yemeni shore, our correspondent adds. In October, the UN refugee agency said that more than 200 people had died at sea in 2014 while attempting to reach Yemen.

“There have been frequent reports of mistreatment, abuse, rape and torture, and the increasingly cruel measures being adopted by smuggling rings seem to account for the increase in deaths at sea,” the UN said at the time.

Final 2014 polio campaign starts off in Kibera

Kenyans are strongly against internet censorship, survey Kenyans are strongly against internet censorship, an opinion that is shared in many emerging and developing nations. Almost 90 per cent of 24 countries surveyed by the Pew research group in one of their latest studies say it is important that people have access to the internet without government censorship. “Support for internet freedom is especially strong in countries where a large percentage of the population is online,” says a spokesperson for Pew. “And, in most of the countries polled, young people are particularly likely to consider internet freedom a priority.” The Pew group conducted all its interviews face-to-face and

managed to survey thousands of people from March 3, 2013 to May 1, 2013. They released the results earlier this year. They discovered that in several nations, “those with higher incomes are particularly likely to consider this a priority.” For instance, 71 per cent of highincome Kenyans say internet freedom is important, compared with 44 per cetn of people in the low-income category. Meanwhile, government restrictions on the internet experience strong opposition, which is especially common in several Latin American nations, including Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Bolivia.

Illiteracy, corruption blamed for divisions among Kenyans High illiteracy levels, poverty, insecurity and corruption have been blamed for lack of cohesion among Kenyans. Speaking today during the launch of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission report on the status of social unity in Kenya, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said education is a key component in enhancing or reducing integration among Kenyans. “The level of trust diminishes with the level of education. In terms of social cohesion education has become a social divider,” said Mutunga. The chief justice also pointed out corruption as another factor dividing Kenyans since they believe they cannot access judicial services unless they give bribes. He assured Kenyans that bribing is not the best way to getting justice, adding that cohesion starts with

patriotism from the citizens. “Citizens have to believe that you can get justice without giving what is commonly known as Chai. Building of a democratic society can be achieved through engagement and fidelity. Patriotic leadership is needed,” Mutunga said. John Omiti, the Executive Director of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research & Analysis (KIPPRA), said insecurity is a high contributor to disunity in the country. He urged the State to invest on early warnings and ensure equity in resource distribution for a better Kenya. NCIC Chairman Francis Ole Kaparo however expressed concerns that the arms of government are constantly on war-paths. “The most disunited institutions are those charged with the responsibility of governing us,” he said.

The final polio campaign in 2014 kicked off this weekend with a launch in Laini Saba, Kibera in Nairobi, where teams of vaccinators and volunteers set off to vaccinate part of the 1.8 million under-five children targeted in selected counties. The launch was officiated by Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Health Dr. Robert Ayisi who represented Mercy Kamau, Acting CEM, Health Services. It was attended by Senator Harold Kipchumba, goodwill ambassador for polio and immunisation among other dignitaries. Nairobi is one of the counties targeted alongside other high risk counties. The other counties include Garissa, Turkana, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Tana River and Lamu. Dr. Ayisi, speaking at the function, called on parents not to tire of having their children immunized because that was the sure way to keep diseases at bay. “We have to make efforts to sustain community health in order to control and eliminate diseases,” he told parents and all gathered for the launch. Senator Kipchumba, a polio survivor appealed to parents, community health workers and volunteers not to let another child suffer like he had, due to contracting polio. He called on counties to sustain their own programmes to ensure all children were protected. The campaign is the fifth round in Nairobi in 2014 but more than 10 rounds have been held countrywide since the outbreak in 2013. MORE ON THIS AT www.capitalfm.co.ke

US fast food staff protests spread across 190 states Ongoing protests by United States fast food workers expanded to 190 cities last week as the movement to raise the minimum wage in the US to $15 (Sh1,354) an hour reached its two-year anniversary. In cities from Boston to Chicago, fast food workers and union organisers marched outside of various McDonalds fast food outlets. The movement has seen some success, with cities such as San Francisco and Seattle raising the minimum wage. The movement, dubbed “Fight for 15”, has organised eight protests and walk-outs in the past two years, but last week’s efforts, which kicked off on Thursday, December 4, 2014 was their biggest yet. Fast food workers, airport employees and home-health aids, amongst others, have argued that the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 (Sh654) is not enough to allow workers to live. The campaign is backed by the Service Employees International Union, which has provided financial support and organisational help to the effort. They have exerted pressure on McDonalds, Burger King and other fast food restaurants to raise wages. McDonalds has said that the protestors do not necessarily represent the opinions of all of its employees, and that wage decisions are up to individual franchise owners. “It’s important to know approximately 90 per cent of our US restaurants are independently owned and operated by franchisees who set wages according to job level and local and federal laws,” it said in a statement. Labour analysts say that the movement has managed to gain momentum both because it capitalised on the increasing focus on income inequality in the wake of the 2010 Occupy movement, and because it made smart organisational choices from the start.

smartmove From Australia with help: Vet returns home to help rural farmers stem losses A veterinary officer in the arid Mwingi area of Eastern Kenya is training farmers on how to protect themselves against losses caused by poor weather conditions. By training livestock farmers to take care of their animals and through the use pasture preservation technology, Dr. Jim Katu has helped over 60 farmers to comfortably take care of their animals. Dr. Katu, who received scholarship from the Australia Awards Africa Fellowship in Agriculture Livestock Course in 2012, decided to return home after the scholarship to ease the difficult lives of the rural farmers in his village. Their situation was being worsened by increasingly changing weather patterns. The doctor returned to his post as District Veterinary Officer in the Ministry of Livestock in Mwingi East District, where he utilised his newfound knowledge to assist local farmers. “Climatic change is proving to be a major constraint to agriculture among the Mwingi communities. I

have integrated knowledge and skills learned in pasture preservation from the course and successfully trained two community farmer groups of about 25 to 30 members each and six staff members as trainer of trainers on improved pasture cultivation and fodder preservation,” says Dr. Katu. He helped develop strategies to fight drought in the district that has an estimated total livestock population of about 70,000 cattle and 80,000 goats worth over half a billion Kenya shillings. “The course proved effective not only in fine tuning country-specific departmental community projects but also created the ideal setting for innovative platforms and professional networks. Such networks will be effective in developing applicable and sustainable mechanisms for small scale farmers to adopt improved farming practices resilient to the impacts of climatic change across Africa,” Dr. Katu adds.

THE

GENDER DEBATE

T

he Holy Book states that we are all equal in the eyes of our creator, but it has almost become a customary law that women always come second—it is a man’s world. Gender inequality remains a major barrier to human development. Girls and women have made major strides since 1990, but they have not fully gained gender equality. The disadvantages facing women and girls are a major source of inequality. All too often, women and girls are discriminated against in health, education, political representation, labour market and many other places. Take the job market for example, assigning roles and responsibilities to a particular sex on the basis of long-standing or unfounded perceptions of their abilities reinforces the idea that forms the stereotyping of professions. In other words, women are only brought up to do nurturing roles and those which exclude them from public participation— and better pay. Ideally, every individual should have the ability to influence his or her opportunities and choices (which would be equal) to make their own informed decisions. In recent weeks, in Nairobi, there have been cases of women being stripped because of being indecently dressed. Does a man have that authority to strip a woman anytime or anywhere he wants just because she is not

dressed decently based on to his standards? Could it be that the superior gender— in this case male—wants to assert authority and choose violence as the route? Engaging men as partners in combating Gender Based Violence is being recognized as a necessary component of Gender Based Violence strategies pursued by humanitarian agencies. Despite progress in responding to survivors’ needs, programmes have not sufficiently involved men in prevention activities. Recognizing that men and boys may also be victims or survivors of Gender Based Violence is therefore essential. Gender Based Violence programmes actively engage men and boys to promote gender equality, and prevent domestic violence, sexual violence and other forms of harmful traditional practices. It is laudable that the government is spearheading the current campaign that would bring back the love between the genders. Any kind of violence is wrong whether it is against a man or a woman and the society should always be ready to condemn and fight against it if it intends to achieve a peaceful stature. Gender equality is a tough call, and many people say that it may not be achieved in the near future but it is our responsibility as men and a women, boys and girls to fight for each other and not against each other!

In the recent weeks in Nairobi, there have been cases of women being stripped because of being indecently dressed.

TANZANIA’S IDRIS IS THE ULTIMATE HOT SHOT A

fter 63 days in the Big brother house, Tanzanian Idris Sultan was crowned the ultimate hot shot, after clinching the first spot in Big Brother Africa 9 with votes from five countries. When IK, the show host, named Idris the winner, the lad was profoundly dumbfounded. He later found his words and thanked Africa for the $300,000 (Sh26 million) cash prize. After eight weeks of drama, conflicts and altercation, the 21-year-old contestant beat big burly men and pretty lasses to the grand prize. Nigeria’s Tayo was the runner up and did not walk away empty handed. Biggie ‘blinged’ the Naija brother with a shimmering gold chain. Idris was real and consistent in his game during the 63-day journey. He charmed the ladies but also kept the men busy with his stories and antics. Asked what his plans are with the cash he said: “This money is from Africa and so I will give back.’” This is the second time in BBA history that Tanzania has carried the day.

Samuel was going about his daily business, that of selling cars when a stunning beauty walked in-yes, Mary, and he sold her a car and it seems, himself! “They say your work pays, mine paid, “joked the overjoyed groom. But while Sam took his time to know her, Mary masked a huge crush that she had on him. And from then on, she knew she had found the one she had been yearning for. “I knew he was the one from day one because

even when we were just friends, he would run and break the skies for me,” said the bubbly bride in an elegant handmade gown. Mary wanted her wedding gown to be unique so she had it beaded by hand. Her bride’s maids looked stunning in their orange dresses with one in a green dress with an orange middle cut. Sam and his boys looked sexy in black suits, white shirts and green ties. After exchanging vows in the presence of their loved ones, the newlyweds headed to the luxurious Dari Restaurant for a photo-shoot. They then joined their guests back at

the reception in Sandove, where they were met with ululations, song and dance. Food and drink flowed freely while the little ones enjoyed a kid’s corner complete with minders. The couple told us they had a budget of Sh950,000, and were satisfied with the outcome. Samuel whispered that he will be taking Mary on multiple honeymoons within and out of the country.

Sawa Sawa festival sets the entertainment bar higher

T

he Sarakasi Dome in Ngara was on fire during the weekend as the Sawa Sawa festival happened. This was the place to discover underground artistes, poetic maestros, and graffiti artists as well as celebrate and support local talent. Day two of the festival saw graffiti artist Bankslave brave the morning sun to spray a masterpiece written Sarakasi on one of the stands at the parking lot. Kalamashaka proved that hip hop is alive and burning as they reminded the revelers of the good old days when hip hop was an avenue to advocate for change and music had meaning. They spat the illest lyrics among them Fanya mambo, Angalia saa and Dandora love, proving they have not lost their mojo. The eagerly-awaited P-unit crew took to the stage amidst cheers from the crowd. Bon eye’s absence was conspicuous but Gabu and Frasha managed to give the thirsty crowd an electric

performance with their smashing hits. Backed by their band, they performed Si lazima, Hapa kule, Kushoto kulia and You guy, among others. On the ones and twos were DJs Sejo and Joe Mfalme who dropped hit after hit keeping the crowd on their feet. They played a choice selection of hip hop, reggae, old school, locals to the delight of revelers. Flexibility and gravity were put to the test with mind blowing acrobatic acts and highly synchronized dance performances from the energetic Sarakasi dancers. They took dancing and acrobatics to insane levels with their close to one hour performance. One of the best performances of the night came from Sarakasi dancer Joy Sweet, who left the crowd mesmerized by her piece. Clad in a tight snake skin jumpsuit, she contorted her petite body in unbelievable positions leaving the crowd glued to her every move. She took things a notch higher

Some of the curtain raisers were Samukat, Benachi, Mr. Seed, D.K Kwenye Beat, M.O.G, Jfam, MC Njugush and DJ Mo. When Hope Kid finally went on stage, the crowd went into a frenzy and even more when he was joined by Size 8 and Willy Paul who sang their hit song “Tam Tam”. Bouncers had to calm the crowd down as they wanted to jump on stage! Hope Kid calmed his fans with “Holiday and finally “Delilah” backed by the beautiful Ivlyn Mutua.

The Ten Cities album launch over the weekend burst the skies of Nairobi with electric performances from renowned artistes, leaving spirals of echo-smoke to billow up to the twinkling stars. Octopizzo, fresh from Europe, performed Mama, Blackstar and Ivo ivo, ivo, among other tracks. Fena Gitu wowed the multinational audience with her African Girl. Her fans invaded the dance floor expelling the usual cold of Monrovia Street. Just A Band and Shapa Man also performed. Fans enjoyed the music while sipping their drink of choice. The venue was safe and ‘#MyBehaviorMyChoice’ attititudes were not allowed at the venue and rowdy revelers were bundled out by security personnel and straight into the police van! However, the long queues at the mobile toilets was an eye sore and uncomfortable for most who had to miss performances due to the inevitable call of nature.

Sky World’s lukewarm launch

Former N-tyce Club, now Sky World Lounge, officially opened its doors to the public last Friday night. With two beers, one was guaranteed entry into the beautiful lounge. There was a good turn out early into the event as they were eager to witness the grand occasion and of course also catch Jaguar performing. First on stage was General Versatile, a reggae artiste from Uganda, who ended up disappointing the crowd with his not-so-lively performance. It was so bad that at one apoint a reveler told the artiste to ‘have a rest already!’ Kamua leo hit maker, Kidis took to the stage and warmed it a little. He was backed by two dancers in his four track performance. While playing the songs he dedicated each to four different girls who also danced with him rather provocatively leaving the men green with envy. The much awaited attraction of the night, Jaguar finally took to stage at around 1:30am and did not disappoint. Instead of performing at the first floor, where the other artistes had performed, he got more personal and went to the crowd. The DJ too was a tad disappointing with his selection of music. Were it not for Jaguar rescuing the night, it would have been a flat fail .

Meanwhile his famous wife has released a new song, Miel a miela (just dance), and its video to raging reviews.

HOROSCOPES capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19

Of course, it’s tempting to run away from the reality and hardships of the moment. But at other times, when you’re so compassionate and find it easy to listen, like today, life is really rewarding. People find your company soothing and pleasant, and they’re likely to thank you for it. Aren’t days like this great?

aquarius Jan 20 - Feb

cancer Jun 22 - Jul 22

You will float today, Cancer. You won’t talk, you will be sleepy, and your mood won’t be the best. OK, perfect! Get back into your novel, take several siestas, and do as little as possible, because that’s what you want to do. Don’t worry, busy beaver, this period will pass. And you know what?

leo Jul 23 - Aug 22

Don’t try to control what happens today, Aquarius, because you won’t be able to fathom what’s going on. How could it be otherwise when collective currents are interfering with your life? You may do some soul-searching because you may feel that you’re only a grain of sand in a vast universe.

You’re certainly in a strange mood today, Leo. True, things have been going smoothly for the past few days, but be careful not to be fooled. Pride goes before a fall, as they say. Today you should be wary of your behavior toward your lover. Your partner’s attitude may dismay you, but you’re the one who has strayed from reality

pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20

virgo Aug 23 -Sep 22

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19

libra Sep 23 - Oct 22

This kind of strange day doesn’t come around often, Pisces. It will seem as though you no longer know what you want. Do you have a yen to take off for the other side of the globe? People won’t understand you, and you will think that explaining yourself is pointless.

Do other countries represent real openings for you? This is a question that you will soon have to answer. This may be true, but it may also be an illusion that gives you a simplistic explanation for the dissatisfaction you feel now in your professional life.

taurus Apr 20 - May 20

You’re going to think this is a strange period. It isn’t, Taurus. It’s just that today won’t be like others. Look around and you will see that people are either depressed or trying to keep up a good façade. It’s as if lots people - you in particular - are being confronted by their dreams without being able to act on them.

gemini May 21 - Jun 21

Today, Gemini, you might get the chance to take a trip around the world to visit fabulous palaces and experience a timeless love, and all - get this - totally free! This could be called a sensitivity test to the universe of Walt Disney. Goodness knows that you aren’t a total stranger to it!

It will be as though you’re in a new and hopeful world today, Virgo. The people you meet will be cordial and caring, and the future will seem like a bright, attractive place to live. In other words, it’s like a fabulous dream, and the alarm clock is bound to wake you up soon.

Because you have a tendency to brood over everything right now, Libra, a day like this can’t be anything but beneficial. It has been difficult for you to find satisfaction within the realm of the known world lately, but today offers you a journey into another perception, one that’s intangible and unreal.

There are days when you feel wonderful without being able to attribute the feeling to any real event. Of course, your rational mind will search for a reason for your happiness. But if you count the number of times when you do things against your will, it becomes obvious that logic and reason don’t always apply to this world.

sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

The day ahead should be excellent, Sagittarius. For the past several days you’ve been searching for meaning in life. There have been changes in your chief occupation, new relationships, bursting ambitions. Today you can let all of that soul searching go.

Hardworking will end violence on women, not activism

The world is marking 16 days of activism against women violence. Despite heart-breaking data that shows Kenyan women are in the league of those being abused, the country produced six of the top 20 of powerful women in the 53 states (6 Kenyans in Africa top 20 powerful women list December 5,

2014). This is a Kenyan girl’s show that women have to fight for a place and men and other parties will only be subsidiaries. One of the outstanding example is Nominated Senator Naisura Lesuuda who hails from a largely patriarchal community where girls

are counted in form of dowry. She has stretched her neck out of the cultural thorns to lead peace initiatives in her conflict-riddled region, a drive that even brave men have not dared. Captain Irene Koki has soared the skies to emerge as the best pilot in the continent. She flies the

world’s Dreamliner plane, a job previously reserved for men. She did not wait for activism to win the job but relied on initiative and determination. The other four women are showing the world that pro-women rights will be fruitless if “we the women do not rise to the occasion and

defend our place in society.” They have to be the revolution they want to witness. If they command this option, they will live to command respect from counterparts without much law coercion or activism.

Warriors whip Police for hockey league glory Who would have thought a side that was only drafted into the league two months ago could become champions? Butali Sugar Warriors, who were crowned Kenyan Hockey Premier League champions after dethroning Kenya Police in a 2-1 victory on Sunday, were only readmitted into league fixtures after a five month appeal case by rivals Nairobi Simba. Nairobi Simba had appealed to the Union following allegations that Warriors, then Kisumu Simba, fielded an ineligible player, Ken Nyongesa in one of their 2013 matches. This led to a three-point deduction by the union. Warriors were relegated to third place in the 2013 season league standing, a point less than Nairobi who moved to second behind champions Kenya Police. It was a battle for the club Championship slot the two teams were fighting for but a KHU

Board of executive meeting ended the war when they re-awarded the points to Warriors. During the duration of the appeal, the lakeside outfit boycotted matches. After their readmission, they had to undergo crowded fixtures. But after rigorous season finale, they were crowned champions again. Former national team captain Zack Oura returned to guide his side to glory for the first time in eight years. In the women’s category, Telkom Orange needed penalty flicks to run over a stubborn Strathmore University to win a 17th title. The Africa champions were forced to a draw for the first time this season when Strathmore twice came from behind to tie the match 2-2. United States International University- Africa finished third with a 2-1 win over Sliders. Pauline Naise and Beatrice Mbugua scored for Usiu as Doris Kirui scored Sliders’ only goal.

SCRUM DOWN! Strathmore Leos in action. Leos are the only team in the Kenya Cup competition that has so far won four matches with a bonus point.

Strathmore Leos stun Impala to maintain perfect Kenya cup start Strathmore University Leos continued their winning run in the Kenya Cup after beating hosts Impala Saracens 37-13 at Impala Club on Saturday night. Strathmore is the only team that has won four matches with a bonus point. As the hosts, pressure was on Impala but had a slow and shaky start conceding

an early penalty that Kenny Andola missed. Most of the contests for the first quarter of the match were concentrated at scrums and Strathmore’s superiority was evident. It was Impala who took a 3-0 lead from a Sam Oliech penalty 12 minutes after kick-off. Strathmore were strong in the forwards. Their

dominance resulted in the first try after camping inside Impala’s 22. Captain Brian Nyikuli and Andola added extra points as Leos went on to regain the lead 7-3. Tony Owuor added the second try for Strathmore and a conversion by Andola extended the lead to 14-3. Churchill Ooko who was a threat for Impala backline

with his quick runs on the right wing ensured the students enjoyed a 21-3 halftime lead. He touched down minutes to the breather and Andola converted. Upon restart, Oliech missed an early penalty and Impala brought in Aringo and Simiyu immediately to help turn the game in their

favour. In a span of five minutes, both teams added a penalty each to settle scores at 24-6. The students pulled away with another penalty from Andola and tries from Adrian Opondo and Cyprian Kuto. Strathmore finished the match with 14 men after Ooko was sent to the sin bin allowing Impala to pull back

SJAK President Chris Mbaisi while lauding the Media Council of Kenya for the initiative, challenged writers to go beyond their comfort zones, noting that armchair journalism is ‘killing’ sports Seasoned media trainer Joe Kadhi urged journalists to remain professional especially now that conflicts of interest, be it with employer or society have

Agüero to miss crucial Roma clash

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini braces himself to rule out Sergio Agüero from their crucial Champions League game against Roma. The striker suffered a knee injury during a game against Everton on Saturday. Pellegrini says the team does not know the severity of the injury yet, but does not expect Agüero to recover in time. The Argentine, 26, was injured in the third minute of Saturday’s game against Everton after a challenge by Muhamed Besic. He left the pitch in tears. City must win Wednesday’s game in Rome to have any chance of reaching the last 16. “It’s a big problem,” admitted City manager Manuel Pellegrini. Aguero - the Premier League’s top scorer with 14 goals - limped out of Saturday’s match, which City won 1-0, and was replaced by teenager Jose Pozo. Pellegrini, who was already without Yaya Toure for the Roma game due to suspension, revealed Aguero was “more calm” in the dressing room afterwards. Aguero has earned widespread acclaim for his performances this season, with Pellegrini hailing the striker as “one of the best players in the world”.

Makau returns with Fukuoka race victory

Former world record holder Patrick Makau returned to the track after lengthy absence to win the Fukuoka International Marathon on Sunday. Makau, who set a world record of 2:3:38 at the 2011 Berlin Marathon, crossed the tape at Heiwadai Stadium in 2:08:22, 26 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Raji Assefa. Ser-Od Bat-Ochir of Mongolia came third in 2:08:50. Masakazu Fujiwara was fourth in 2:09:06 in a race that doubled up

as a qualifier for the 2015 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing in August. Japan-based defending champion Martin Mathathi of Kenya was 21st. Fujiwara attempted to chase down the leading pack as he took the lead in the battle for fourth place before the 34-km mark but fell short in the attempt. Kentaro Nakamoto, who finished sixth at the London Olympics, fell behind after 34 km and finished in 12th place.

Federer not ‘convinced’ by new International Premier League Roger Federer says he is unconvinced by the innovative new International Premier League. The 17-time Grand Slam winner says the tournament does not “sit easily” with his traditionalist views on the sport. Launched in November, top male and female players feature in teams representing four cities of New Delhi, Manila, Singapore and Dubai. Federer, 33, said: “My mind was scrambling trying to remember all the rules. It’s crazy, but it’s good fun.” The 33-year-old was undefeated on his debut for the Indian Aces in New Delhi as a late replacement for Rafa Nadal. Federer won his men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles against Singapore Slammers at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Sunday. With emphasis on speed, an IPTL tie comprises five oneset shootouts in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and mixed doubles and a past champions match. The team that wins the highest number of games, not sets, is declared winner.

Another rough draw for Kenya in Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens Kenya has been handed another tough draw in the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens, the third tournament in the World Rugby HSBC Sevens World Series this weekend in South Africa. Kenya has been drawn in Pool A with the defending champions and hosts South Africa, Wales and US. The draw follows another lacklustre performance from Paul True’s side in the Dubai Sevens.

In Dubai, Kenya was drawn in an equally tough pool with Australia (Dubai Sevens finalists), England (plate semi-finalists) and USA (bowl semi-finalists). Kenya finished last without a win. The only bright spark on the opening day was four tries by Mwamba forward Daniel Sikuta who was named as one of the top try scorers. The big blow was delivered by US who beat Kenya 26-17. After

dropping to the bowl, Kenya were beaten by Samoa in the quarters before scrapping a win over Brazil in the semis. They could not go past a struggling Canada in the Shield finals. Messi’s hat-trick as Barca rout Espanyol

Lionel Messi matched Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo with a hat-trick this weekend as Barcelona returned to second in La Liga with victory over Espanyol. The 27-year-old struck either side of half-time with two typically well-taken finishes to put his side ahead after Sergio Garcia’s solo goal had given the visitors a surprise early lead. After Messi’s second, Barca took charge with Gerard Pique heading the third. Pedro scored a fourth before Messi had the last word by completing the rout. Messi’s first was a pinpoint finish from the edge of the box, the second a side-foot strike after controlling Luis Suarez’s pass and the third a tap-in following a one-two with Pedro. The goals took his tally to 256 goals in La Liga in 291 appearances. They also took him past the 200 goal mark in Spain’s top flight since the 2009 arrival at Real Madrid of Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his own 200th goal as part of a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo on Saturday night. Ronaldo’s treble was a record 23rd in La Liga, but Messi is not far behind, having now notched up his 21st in the competition.

United eyeing third as they visit Saints Victory in tonight’s game against Southampton would complete a great weekend for the Red Devils, with Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool suffering blows. Victory will see United who currently are in fifth move to third in the table standings ahead of third placed West Ham on 27 points, and Southampton with a point less. Southampton midfielder Jack Cork has been ruled out for six weeks with an ankle injury while Toby Alderweireld is a doubt with a hamstring problem. Monday’s match will also come too soon for midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, but Dusan Tadic has overcome a knock. United captain Wayne Rooney will be fit to face Saints after a knee injury, but Angel Di Maria’s hamstring problem will see him miss his second consecutive match. It was billed as crunch time for Southampton, the crucible in which their mettle would be tested. Cue lots of knowing looks and cries of “I told you so” after defeats by Manchester City and Arsenal. KPA roughly dunked into finals Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) are on paper into the Kenya Basketball Federation men premier league playoffs final after winning two of the five semi-finals playoffs. Over the weekend, KPA won their second semi-final against champions Cooperative Bank. The dockers won game one 59-55 on Saturday at the Makande gymnasium in a close-call tie. In the second game on Sunday, it was a hard one as they staged a late comeback to win 66-62. They trailed

Co-op Bank up to the fourth quarter when the bankers cracked. Co-op Bank led 32-30 at halftime and doubled the advantage to four points at the close of third quarter winning 16-14. KPA came out fighting in the fourth quarter for a 22-14 win. The dockers now need a win in the third game on Saturday in Nairobi to qualify while Co-op Bank must win the remaining three games to sail to the finals. In other matches, Ulinzi Warriors shook off a poor start to beat

United States International University- Africa (USIU-A) 70-58 in game one. USIU-A led 27-25 at halftime but could not sustain the pressure in the second half. Ulinzi won first quarter 1412 and USIU-A the second 15-11. The soldiers carried the day in second half winning third and fourth quarters 26-17 and 19-14 respectively. From 14 attempts, Ulinzi scored six 3-point shots and six free-throws from 19 attempts which worries Balozi.

to acknowledge that Southampton were comfortably beaten by City at St. Mary’s, but was also correct in saying that had he been able to keep 11 players on the pitch at the Emirates, Southampton might well have earned a valuable point against Arsenal. They may need some better luck than they had at Arsenal to achieve that, but why not? It would be massively refreshing to see a club go from League One to the Champions League in just four years. Manchester United have exactly the same goal difference as Southampton. Louis van Gaal has acknowledged that winning the title is really only a statistical possibility, so a return to the top four is their aim. In fact, it’s more than an aim, it’s their whole business plan. United are not a club designed to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous failure two seasons running. The two Dutch managers have history. Koeman was assistant to Van Gaal at Barcelona; and later when Koeman was coach at Ajax, Van Gaal joined as technical director. It was then that they fell out, resulting in Van Gaal referring to Koeman as weak and “that boy” in his autobiography.
