16days

“on november 25, we signed onto the global ‘16 days of activism’ campaign against gender-based violence, and we walked the whole distance. During the period, we did our best to inform the public on why it is important to respect the rights of women, on the backdrop of a tide that saw ladies being stripped naked for alleged indecent dressing. We hope that the message stuck.” —see page 7 for more on our stand—

Kenyan youth most cheerful in EA The youth in Kenya are happier than their counterparts in the East African region, a study into the age group’s welfare in 30 countries across the world indicates. In the first ever research, the International Youth Foundation, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, and Hilton Worldwide assessed how teens are faring in different countries. Although the youth in Kenya (pictured) were found to be among those badly off economically, they are still ahead in optimism among colleagues in the region. Of the 30 nations surveyed, Kenya ranks at number 27, just above Tanzania and Uganda as Nigeria

came in last with a youth said to be the unhappiest of the lot. To compile the index, researchers considered 40 indicators to assess “citizen participation, economic opportunity, education, health, information and communications technology (ICT), and safety and security” among people aged between 12 and 24 years of age. “The well-being of the age group should matter to everyone. Youthinclusive societies are more likely to grow and prosper,” the report says, “while the risks of exclusion include stunted growth, crime, and unrest.” The 30 countries chosen are said to have the at least 70 per cent of the world’s youthful population.

Australia, Sweden, South Korea, UK, Germany, US, Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia and Thailand took up the first 10 positions, with youth in the

countries found to be jovial. The report notes that high income countries have the majority of happy youth but the situation has other

shortcomings. “Although high-income countries in general had lower rates of youth mortality, they had higher rates of youth stress and self-harm. High levels of stress, self-harm, and smoking dragged down the ranking of the US, for example,” the report said. Of the eight African countries surveyed, only Morocco and Ghana had a “middle” status, meaning youth in the countries are “not very happy but also not very sad.” South Africa and Egypt followed in that order which like the rest had the “worst” cases of youth happiness.

Woman gives birth in California-bound flight

TOUCHDOWN: A Southwestern Airlines Flight 623 lands at the Los Angeles Airport. A mother in the flight gave birth late Tuesday. Insert: Passengers in the flight.

A plane that left San Francisco landed at Los Angeles, California, with an extra passenger after a woman gave birth while on board. The woman, who was travelling in a Southwest Airline, was assisted by plane crew and medics to welcome the visitor in mid-air. AP reports that names of the mother and baby and the number of passengers aboard have not been released. But airline spokeswoman Emily Samuels said the two are in stable condition. Passenger Julie Dafoe and Kurt Reed, who were sitting next to the new mother, said she looked restless in the plane shortly after take-off. “One of the nurses that helped she said she was like walking around pacing in the airport so they were thinking she was having contractions,” Dafoe told

Phoenix TV station, KTVK. “All of a sudden I heard a baby cry like a gurgling sound, like a baby that had too much milk or whatever and I’m like ‘There’s no babies on this flight,’” Reed said. Other travellers said they heard about the call for a doctor, but they never knew what the emergency was about. They later realised what had happened when the pilot announced the good news. “The captain announced congratulations for the arrival of this new baby boy.” So we all started applauding, but it was confusing because we thought someone was going to die not be born,” passenger Aarti Shahani told KTVK. The flight was destined for Phoenix, but it was diverted to Los Angeles for the jet cleaning as passengers were moved to another plane.

Kenya to probe Al Jazeera over death squad report Kenya has ordered Al-Jazeera be investigated and face possible charges over a report alleging the National Police Service runs a death squad. The interior ministry has also accused the Al-Jazeera network of trying to “derail” Kenyan efforts to

fight terrorism. “The documentary was deliberately planned and aired at a time when Kenya is seeking support to strengthen its war against terror,” the ministry tweeted. Al Jazeera ran a report on Monday in which men claiming to be

anti-terror officers said they killed suspects on government orders. But the Government has denied the allegations, and dismissed the report as “scandalous and unethical”. The National Police Service also denied the allegations, saying they only act in accordance with the

constitution. Rights groups have in the past accused Kenya of carrying out extra-judicial killings. The Al Jazeera report claimed most high-profile killings target Muslim radicals, including those with links to the al-Shabab militant group. It also alleged that Western

intelligence agencies provide some of the information needed to carry out the assassinations. But the Government says the report is aimed at inciting Muslims against the Government, especially at a time when the war on terror has reached “boiling point.”

Man wounded in Kawangware party attack

Kenya falls further down in global bribery index Kenya is two points more corrupt this year than it was in 2013, a recent report by Transparency International has revealed. On a scale of 1 to 100 - 1 being ‘highly corrupt’ and 100 being ‘highly clean’ – Kenya scored 25. This is down two points from 27 last year, according to the latest numbers. In East Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda beat Kenya in terms of good performance with scores of 49, 31 and 26 respectively. East Africa’s most famous nation was ranked position 145 out of 174 countries across the world using what Transparency International calls the Bribery

A man was shot and wounded after robbers attacked revellers at a party in Kawangware. A group of youths had been hosting a party in the area and was leaving the venue when it was confronted by gunmen yesterday morning. A commotion ensued that left one of the victims shot in the leg. The gang escaped on foot after the robbery with unknown amount of money and valuables. And in Kariobangi, a suspected thug was last night lynched by a mob in a botched robbery.

Index survey. Transparency International Kenya has been conducting the East African Bribery Index survey annually across five East African countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The Index examines indicators such as the likelihood of bribery, the prevalence of bribery, the average size of a bribe, the share of national bribes and the impact of bribery. The objective of the survey is to map out bribery experiences in East Africa in key service sectors. This information is particularly crucial in monitoring the progress of public service reforms and improvements.

Kahawa residents living in fear after spate of robberies Residents of Kiamumbi area in Nairobi’s Kahawa west are living in fear after a spate of night attacks by thugs. The latest happened last night at an apartment where five thugs broke into at least six houses in a robbery that saw cash and valuables stolen. In a span of one week, three homes, including a flat, in the same neighbourhood have been raided in incidences that have left a gate man fighting for his life in hospital. “On Thursday last week four people with crude weapons invaded our compound at 1am. They cornered the watchman and ordered him to go from house to house to wake up tenants so that they (thugs) could gain entry and rob us,” said James Ratemo, a resident. The watchman had allegedly

refused to cooperate and resorted to fight the thieves. “They wanted the watchman to open the main gate so that they could get away with some of the cars in the compound. He resisted and even injured two of the thugs with a matchete. Last night, a gang raided another home and stole property in the area. Police say they are looking for the gang. Kasarani OCPD Francis Sang said they are following good leads into the attackers. “We hope to make a breakthrough soon,” he said. But residents have complained the attacks have persisted with no action from police. For instance, no policeman has visited him to investigate the incident yet the watchman has indicated he might identify two of his attackers.

Police probe death of two robbery suspects

Police are investigating an incident in which two men killed each other after a disagreement over loot they had in Mirema area, Nairobi. The bodies of the two were found this morning and witnesses told police the two had been fighting with crude weapons after the disagreement last night. Police suspect the victims were also intoxicated.

Teachers give KNUT green light to call January strike The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) top organ has given their management the go-ahead to call for a strike in January in their pay dispute with the government. KNUT delegates endorsed the strike at their annual conference on Tuesday clearing the union to call for the industrial action if the government fails to present them with a substantive offer before schools reopen next year. The delegates took the decision after their Secretary General Wilson Sossion informed them that even after calling off their strike last year to allow for negotiations towards the signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement, no progress had been made. “Where else in the history of the world has a government called for negotiations and then failed to put anything on the table 26 meetings in? They should have first gotten their house in order

before engaging us. Not withdraw offers because they hadn’t consulted the Treasury or the SRC,” he said. Treasury and SRC, Sossion argued, were being used as, “simply another ploy,” to take teachers on, “a merry-go ride.” “It’s always one thing after another but this will not simply be another strike after

another,” Sossion promised. As articulated by Dr Charles Mukhwaya of the Trade Union Congress on Monday, Sossion — who is also the Congress’ General Secretary – said the threatened teachers’ strike might escalate into a general public service strike action. “This is because those in public

service are facing the same challenge – the SRC,” he said. The SRC, Sossion claimed, was frustrating the better remuneration of not just teachers, but public servants in general. “What is this job evaluation animal?” he posed. “As teachers it is clear what our job descriptions are and what qualifications

Ebola could still spread, warns WHO The Ebola virus that has killed thousands in West Africa is still “running ahead” of efforts to contain it, the head of the World Health Organization has said. Director General Margaret Chan said the situation had improved in some parts of the worst-affected countries, but she warned against complacency. The risk to the world “is always there” while the outbreak continues, she said. She said the WHO

and the international community failed to act quickly enough. The death toll in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, stands at 6,331. More than 17,800 people have been infected, according to the WHO. “In Liberia we are beginning to see some good progress. Especially in Lofa county (close to where the outbreak first started) and the capital,” said Dr Chan. Cases in Guinea and Sierra Leone were “less

severe” than a couple of months ago, but she said “we are still seeing large numbers of cases”. Dr. Chan said: “It’s not as bad as it was in September. But going forward we are now hunting the virus, chasing after the virus. Hopefully we can bring the number of cases down to zero.” The official figures do not show the entire picture of the outbreak. In August, the WHO said the numbers were

“vastly under-estimated”, due to people not reporting illnesses and deaths from Ebola. Dr. Chan said the quality of data had improved since then, but there was still further work to be done. She said a key part of bringing the outbreak under control was ensuring communities understood Ebola. She said teams going into some areas were still being attacked by frightened communities.

we require. It’s also a bit like trying to attach reins on a horse after opening the barn door by calling for evaluations in the middle of negotiations.” The union, he said, would therefore only sit at the negotiating table with their constitutionally created employer: The Teachers Service Commission.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has called on Kenyans to the window for public participation in the budget making to forward their views instead of petitioning parliament or employing the use of strikes to push for more cash allocations once the process is complete. Mr. Rotich made the plea yesterday during the commencement of a three-day public forum for Kenyans to give their views. To increase absorption of funds earmarked for development projects, he encouraged government agencies to launch their procurement processes early enough. “We need to improve on procurement planning. There is a move towards raising absorption by doing procurement early,” said Rotich. This comes even as the government is accused of failing to spend Sh114 billion in the first third of the current financial year.

China’s ivory craze kills 100,000 African elephants China’s skyrocketing appetite for ivory is leading to the unsustainable slaughter of African elephants. As prices for precious ivory goods surge in China, the number of poached elephants has also escalated. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants, said 100,000 African elephants have been killed for their ivory in just the past three years. “African elephants could disappear from the wild within a generation,” unless China does more to end the sale of ivory, said DouglasHamilton. Kenya could be among the biggest casualties with more than 10, 000 elephants killed by poachers over the last three years according to Elephant Neighbours Centre (ENC). The conservation group’s executive director, Mr. Jim Nyamu, said that at least four elephants are killed every day by those involved in the ivory trade China is the world’s largest consumer of ivory as newly-wealthy Chinese consumers have developed a taste for exotic luxury goods. The wholesale price of raw tusks has tripled in just four years since 2010, while retail prices for finished ivory have increased exponentially. Retail prices in Beijing, for example, have increased more than 13 times since 2002. While there are laws regulating ivory sales in China, they are

not being adequately enforced, according to a report Tuesday from Save the Elephants and The Aspinall Foundation. “The system is presently out of control,” the report said. The market for legal ivory in China, which has quadrupled over the past 10 years, is providing a “smokescreen” for illegal sales, it said. Researchers visited 275 retail outlets in Beijing and Shanghai and found that the number of illegal shops far outnumbers the number of legal ones. At least 78 percent of the ivory shops in Beijing were illegal, while in Shanghai it was at least 89 percent.

Philips, Kenya deal to boost community healthcare project

The Government will partner with Philips, a Dutch multinational corporation, to implement a new healthcare concept that will bring quality healthcare closer to Kenyans. The ‘Community Life Centre Solution’ concept will also provide water and solar powered services to boost economic activities among Kenyans.

Addressing a meeting at State House, Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the initiative will boost Government efforts to provide quality healthcare. He said the service will also remove pressure from referral hospitals. “Ensuring Kenyans receive quality health services within a walking distance is something very close to my heart. You can

count on my total support,” said the President. Philips Chief Executive Officer Frans van Houten hailed the President’s active role in transforming the health sector, saying Kenya leads the region in provision of the services. The two leaders discussed collaboration in the health sector, including a pilot facility in Githurai which comprises

low cost LED lighting technology and a health centre. Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia commended Philips for its positive work in the country. “Philips has rehabilitated healthcare services in 23 hospitals across the country, including the installation of imaging, radiology and ICU equipment,” he said.

Drugs project targets low income Kenyans

A research project funded by UK’s Department for International Development targets to provide affordable healthcare services to low income Kenyans. The Pharmnet retail network hopes to address challenges facing low-income consumers, including irresponsible prescribing practices and sub-standard drugs. It is partly run by the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association (KPA), a group of Government-licensed pharmaceutical experts. It has been supported by the Private Sector Innovation Programme for Health (PSP4H), another research project funded by DFID. Kenya has helped design an inclusive business environment where local drugs makers and distributors can play an active role in healthcare delivery. Pharmaceutical company, Phillips Healthcare, for instance, is expanding a pilot programme that provides nutritional supplements to more than 150,000 young children by 2018. This project targets healthcare workers by providing training to help expose young children to proper feeding habits. Since pharmacies are often low-income Kenyans’ first point of contact with the healthcare system, organisers say private retail drug outlets are a vital aspect of the national healthcare delivery. The network of retail pharmacies owned or operated by KPA members delivers drugs under a common Pharmnet brand.

CMC’s new equipment to support local contractors

WEDNESday, DECember 10, 2014

NEW ARRIVALS: Solomon Muturi Managing Director of CMC Motors Group. CMC launched Case Backhoe Loader and the Case Tandem Soil Compactor to support local contractors.

The government has confirmed plans to ensure contractor stick to the 30 per cent local content rule which requires them to acquire construction equipment from local dealers. Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary, Michael Kamau, said the adherence to local content sourcing will apply to all contracts relating to the proposed 10,000km upgrade of roads to bitumen standards. “My ministry, is committed

to support and encourage contractors to source their machines from local dealers in line with the government 30% local content policy,” he said. In compliance to the rule, motor vehicle solutions provider CMC Motors launched the Case Backhoe Loader and the Case Tandem Soil Compactor to increase sales. CMC Motors Managing Director, Solomon Muturi, said the launch of the two machines and training of

local technicians is a sign that the company is investing heavily into the local market and making use of the opportunities available. “At CMC, we are excited at the growth prospects presented by the massive infrastructure developments locally and in the region and we are actively exploring opportunities to be the mechanized equipment supplier of choice,” said Muturi. Muturi said the two machines are efficient in fuel consumption and have high performance rates.

Marsabit farmers reaping huge benefits from irrigation Farmers in Marsabit County are reaping big returns from a water project that was once deemed impossible. The water harvesting initiative, which has led to the uptake of greenhouses and other modern farming techniques, is now turning the dry area into an oasis. Today, more people who were traditionally pastoralists, are now venturing into farming. Farmers in the famineravaged northern district first came together to acquire a greenhouse and start vegetable farming last September. They

soon enjoyed a rapid uptake in business that proved the commercial viability of their project. The greenhouse, measuring 8 by 15 meters, cost Sh161,600 to set up, 70 per cent of which was financed by the Ministry of Arid Lands while the other 30 per cent was raised by the 24-member Sagante Community Group. Halakhe Waqo, one of the group members, noted that water has been a major hurdle in making the project viable. The group divided the green

house into two, planting tomatoes in one half of the structure and Sukuma Wiki in the other. Within the first six weeks, crops were ready for harvesting, and the small green house was producing 35kg of tomatoes and about 30kg of Sukuma Wiki every five days. A kilogram of the tomatoes are sold for as much as Sh70, while Sukuma Wiki fetches about Sh500 in sales revenue per week, making for total income of between Sh2300 and Sh3300 a week, or up to Sh14,800 a month.

hustlersector Pig feed makers saving thousands Pig farmers and enterprising individuals are making thousands of shillings using only saw dust and animal droppings to make fodder. Their solution, which recycles pigs’ faecal waste and turns sawdust into a rich source of carbohydrates for pigs to consume, is cutting feed cost by up to 30 per cent. The initiative comes at a time when the price of feeds has been rising in recent years. Agriculturalist, Dr. Christine Mburugu notes that there is a demand for quality affordable feeds for over 350,000 pigs in the

country. The cheap solution is not quite new and is commonly known as IMO. Its name is derived from its formulation indigenous microorganisms. It has been in use for the last 2 years. Under this model, farmers construct the unit for their pigs by digging a ditch three metres into the ground. The ditch is filled with sawdust while the animals are allowed to relieve themselves in it. A concrete floor is not recommended to ensure that urine and any other soluble litter sinks to the ground.

The saw dust can last for 8 to 9 months and can be used as animal feed or can later be used as fully manure for fertilizing crops. IMO is inexpensive with 500 grams retailing at about Sh650. “The solution in its original form is very concentrated and therefore the farmers have to dilute it and mix it with water and other food particles like maize brand and allow it to ferment a process that will multiply the indigenous microorganism,” explains Agriculture expert, Dr. Richard Kirigwanja.

ad things happen when good people stand on the sidelines and do nothing. The 16 days set aside by the Kenyan Government to fight gender violence comes to a close today. Many things have been said, strides have been made and what now remains is for people to stay vigilant and support the cause. Last month, when the onslaught of stripping innocent women started, it was devastating. It almost felt that the human race had evolved backwards. How in this age and time could such barbaric behaviour be tolerated towards a fellow human being? How

was it even possible that another human being could justify it? It was shameful at all levels. The gods of decency and dignity must have taken several sharp breaths and moved down to take another look. Most men are not violent. But men do need to stop being silent. Calling violence against women, whether street harassment or sexual harassment or rape or murder, a “women’s issue” allows men to ignore it as if they have no responsibility for it or stake in ending it. HOw TO INVITE

verreliance on artificial light while at home during the day can at times disappoint especially in places prone to blackouts. Remodeling your house to let in more natural light can also save you those glaring power bills. The refashioning process can start with the solid door, which can be replaced by a glass sliding door or a metallic one that must have transparent glass. The transparent glass will allow you to use sheer curtains to keep off too much light besides giving you the much needed privacy. Adding more and bigger windows to the space can also be an exciting opportunity for you to enjoy the natural ambience of the ‘God-given’ light. This also allows you to control the amount of light using the curtains of various weights to filter the amount and quality of light.

Bright interior decors are are likely to bring more light in the living room. They receive light and reflect it, most likely to the corners that are a bit dark as opposed to dull finishes which absorb the little light available. Changing this décor improves your home lighting experience. There are other options available to liberate your house from the bondage of darkness and bills. Translucent iron sheets can bring down to the sun to your living table. However, from the basic definition, this will only work for houses without slabs on them. Andrew Morebu, says a ceiling may also be a hindrance that you may have to encounter. But with the advice of a remodeling expert, you can make careful trade-offs. Fixing tubular skylight can allow you drill a small hole into your ceiling to receive the natural light for your family and guests to enjoy.

t is natural for you to eat into the daybreak hours when you are off-duty or on a weekend. However, your extended sleep may be short-lived because of a wheezing cold morning breeze sneaking into your bedroom through a glass window, which the naughty children broke while you were away. You may want to try your hand in fixing the windowpane since you will be spending the rest of the day home. Take accurate measurements of the broken section. If it is of a shape that is not the normal square or rectangle, draw and take it to the supplier, who will cut it for you. Yogurt is the cure for all those intestine infections. The probiotics found in yogurt balance out the bacteria found in your intestines. The lactobacteria found in yogurt help in keeping the colon healthy thereby lowering the risk of colon cancer. Also when you happen to have diarrhoea, yogurt will clear that right up.

Heart friendly

Studies have shown that yogurt can reduce cholesterol because the live cultures in yogurt absorb cholesterol. Low fat yoghurt will also reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure. Proteins in the yoghurt have been shown to regulate blood pressure.

Healthy source of protein

Seeing as yoghurt is a bi-product of

milk it is rich in animal protein. Yoghurt contains about 20 percent of the required daily protein intake for a person. During fermentation, the proteins are made easier to digest so your stomach does not have to work overtime to digest your food.

Yoghurt will reduce yeast infections.

Yeats infections are bothersome. They can drive a woman insane what with incessant itching and the burning. The live cultures that are present in yoghurt work to reduce yeast in the vagina. To clear the infection one can eat yogurt or apply yoghurt to the affected area. However one must make sure that the yogurt is plain and not flavoured because sugar fuels yeast.

ou can eat all the omega three fats in the world but that will probably not guarantee you a sharp, smart and resilient brain. The brain, like other body organs depends on the principle of use and disuse. This principle states that organs can deteriorate or stop working all together when not in use. It is of key importance therefore to use our brains for optimum performance and mental health. With all the technology at our disposal, making use of our brains can be quite a hard task. We do not have time to really engage our brains even to do the most mundane of things as we depend on our smart devices and internet to think for us. If left unchecked our brains can become slow due to lack of use or challenges to stimulate it. Here are some are tips that can help one maintain brain fitness. Enhance your thinking and word skills by switching off the television and passive activities and reading daily, learning new words and how to use them, writing which requires a lot of thinking and learning a new language.

Play mind engaging games. Games like sudoku, crossword puzzles, chess or simple arithmetic all make use of your brain and flex it. Ditch the calculator for simple addition and subtraction problems. Games help you become a better and more creative problem solver. Challenge yourself by doing normal things in a different way. For example you can do chores using your less dominant hand, that is, if you are right handed, perform your tasks using your left hand for a while and vice versa. Ditch the smart phone, ditch the social media and go out and socialize. Talk to different people about different things. Strive to keep your conversations intellectual and avoid gossip which is less constructive. Eat a well-balanced meal rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acids to feed your brain. Physical exercises also keep your body healthy and reduce your chances of getting sick. Like that six pack or lean body your brain also needs to be nourished and exercised if it is to last you for the next years and ensure a graceful aging process.

The collection included favourites mermaid, ball gowns and lace wedding gowns. “These particular gowns were in high demand and that is why I chose to focus my new collection mostly on them, said Joyce Chacaha, head designer and founder Bliss Fashion House. Joyce told XAccess that she used organza fabric because it is thin, soft and stiff thus easier to sew on the embroideries on the gowns, which she does by her hand. She also uses silk and chiffon. If you are planning that grand wedding you may want to take a look around this fashion house to make an early pick.

You might wake up feeling a little under the weather, perhaps too tired to go anywhere, and you’ll want to stay in. Perhaps this is the best course of action for today. You may be tired and a bit stressed out, Cancer, and more vulnerable than usual to any bugs may be going around at this time.

leo Jul 23 - Aug 22

Today you might get the feeling that someone in your family is hiding something. The atmosphere might be strained and somewhat tense. Today, Scorpio, you probably aren’t going to feel very friendly. You’re most likely to want to sequester yourself at home and not see or speak to anyone. If your need for solitude is that strong, indulge it. You won’t do yourself any good by forcing contact with others.

sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

Others’ unethical behavior could trigger some long-buried anger that might make you want to lash out at those responsible. This won’t solve anything. The best way to handle these rather explosive emotions is honest communication, but today it could deteriorate into arguments.

Govt should reform security organs to guarantee safety of all Kenyans Extrajudicial killings of suspected terrorist will not end emerging extremism in Kenya. The killings may instead motivate more radicals to replace their fallen ‘heroes’ to advance their agenda (‘Kenya’s Death Squads’: Al Jazeera Exposé draws mixed reactions December 9, 2014) More than four years since the ratification of the Constitution,

major reforms have not taken place in security and legal sectors. Security agencies are left with no option but the gun as was claimed in recent TV interviews featuring officers.

On various occasions, suspects have been released for lack of enough evidence to sustain full

trial. This is a failure by the security agents, who should gather intelligence that can sustain strong cases against suspects. After courts release the suspects on bond, some of them engage in terror activities against innocent Kenyans. In as much as they may be

released on human rights grounds, their freedom does not hold when they do not respect the right of others who they often plan to kill. The law must be reviewed to detain the suspects until they are cleared of involvement in any wrong doing. Claims in the exposé aired by a foreign news network claim the

National Security Council issued the killing orders are serious. The Government has a duty to defend itself against accusations just as Administration Police Spokesperson Masoud Mwinyi did. But journalists have also exposed failures which need urgent redress to ensure the country remains secure.

Pipeline likely to sponsor volleyball body Kenya Pipeline Company could be sponsors of the Kenya Volleyball Federation national league for the coming season. Federation chairman Waithaka Kioni refused to reveal the sponsors but said there are high chances the sponsor will be made public in coming weeks. Kenya Pipeline sponsored the first volleyball gala awards held in Mombasa at the end of last month.

This was the first gala organised to honour players’ achievement. “Talks are at an advanced stage to secure a sponsor for our national league,” Kioni said. He said the league received strong financial backing in order to stop overdependence on hand-outs from sponsors. Kioni says sponsorship will boost the level of the game as competition will intensify

among teams. A sponsorship package of Sh42 million was revealed by the National Oil Corporation to the national women’s team. Kenya Pipeline won the women’s league this season after dethroning defending champions Kenya Prisons 3-0 win in the finals. Kenya Prisons were 3-1 winners over GSU in the men’s finals.

ANOTHER ONE GONE: Ugandan Cranes trio of Dan Sserunkuma (centre), Godfrey Walusimbi (right) and Geoffrey Kizito (left). Kizito is moving on from Gor after the club failed to meet his expectations.

Gor fail to meet Kizito’s expectations

Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have failed to reach an agreement that could keep midfielder General Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito for at least another season. Club secretary general Chris Omondi said Gor was unable to meet Kizito’s demands owing to the former’s financial situation. The developments will see the player leave the club as a free agent. Talks between the club and the player had been going

Orange scouting new talent for next season There is need to inject fresh blood especially in the forward line, were the words of Telkom Orange head coach Jos Openda as the team won record 17th national title on Sunday. The move by the coach comes after the team won unprecedented seventh Africa club of cup championships in Zimbabwe last week. The Africa champion shower struggled in the national play offs needing penalty flicks against Strathmore University Scorpions. The match ended 2-2 in normal time. Openda said his forward line needs more punch and creativity going into the next season. “I expected much more from my forward line especially having had a very good finishing form in Africa Club Championships in Zimbabwe. We wasted so many chances in this match and that almost cost us,” he said. “The important thing for us is that we won the league again and we will work on improving where we observed weaknesses. My main area of concern is our forward line where we will need to bring on board a few creative players for the next season,” he added.

FRESH BLOOD: Orange Telkom (in black and orange) in action. Coach Jos Openda says there is need to inject fresh blood especially in the forward line, as the team won record 17th national title on Sunday.

Though he did not mention specific targeted players, Openda said most of their new players will come from the Telkom Young Rovers which is the team’s developmental unit. He also did not rule out any chances of reaching

out to other teams for more talents, “We don’t poach players it’s just that sometimes good players from other teams come to us saying they are tired of being number three or number two.”

on for some time and it was projected that a deal could be brokered. “The club has been engaging the player over a new deal but we failed to agree on terms. As a club we are looking at the affordability and sustainability aspects of a deal hence the collapse in talks with Kizito. He has since requested for a release letter which the club will grant him.” Omondi said. “We wish him the best in his career and thank him for his

dedicated service to the club during the season.” Kizito joined the 14-time Kenyan champions club at the beginning of 2014 season and featured prominently as Gor retained the league title. He becomes the second influential player to ditch the club in under a week following the departure of his compatriot Dan Sserunkuma who penned a two year deal with Tanzanian side Simba SC.

Martina to coach Radwanska

Martina Navratilova has agreed to take on her first major coaching role working with Agnieszka Radwanska. The 18-time Grand Slam singles-winner will link up with the world number six at the end of the year. Navratilova, 58, said: “I can’t wait to get started on this new phase of my career and I am really excited.” Navratilova will work with Radwanska’s fulltime coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, and will train with the 25-year-old for the first time in Miami after Christmas. The nine-time Wimbledon champion added: “I was delighted when Agnieszka asked me if I would collaborate with Tomasz. “I did not sleep very well last night, thinking

about getting back into match mode and the competitions.” Radwanska, a Wimbledon finalist in 2012, is confident Navratilova’s presence will help her earn a first Grand Slam success. The Pole, added: “Her achievements speak for themselves and I hope that I can learn from all her experience. She is my tennis idol. “We are originally from a similar part of the world so we share an understanding about tennis and life, which I’m sure will translate into a successful relationship.” Andy Murray welcomed the move. He tweeted “Well done to @Martina and @ARadwanska wish them all the best for next year! Hope it goes well for you both.

He said he is pleased by his new assignment and pledged desire to see

We want to cement our status in the league and in two years’ time we can start dreaming of challenging for league title.” “In life some things like change are inevitable. We have done a good job at Thika United despite the challenges we faced and now it is time to move on. This is the time for me to move and grow. It is a new culture and environment and that is what makes it exciting.”

All the club’s teams, from age-group sides to men’s and women’s senior squads, a total of more than 450 individuals weekly. Patrick Vieira thinks the facility will help the club attract the best young players in the world. “If we go into the market and we compete to bring young players or first-team players in, having a facility like this can only help,” said the former City midfielder, who runs the club’s elite development squad. When you are a young, talented player from Manchester - or worldwide - you want the best possible facilities to challenge and improve yourself.” A World Cup winner with France who also played club football for Arsenal, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan, Vieira, 38, believes City’s new complex is like no other. “Arsenal was really good, Inter was really good, but I think this training facility takes it to a different level,” he said.

other accolades include taking charge of three matches at Fifa U20 finals in UAE last year. His appointment has been supported by FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya. “We are delighted that Marwa has continued to impress in the high level arena of officiating which has caught the attention of Fifa and CAF,” he said.

Swansea chief plays down player shirt swap

Swansea manager Garry Monk says he will talk to winger Jefferson Montero after the Ecuadorian swapped shirts with a rival at half-time. Montero, 25, exchanged shirts with compatriot Enner Valencia during Swansea’s 3-1 fall at West Ham on Sunday. “It’s not something I particularly like,” Monk said. “We’ll sit down with him and talk to him. It’s not a big issue.” Montero joined Swansea on a four-year deal from

Mexican club Monarcas Morelia in July after representing his country at the World Cup finals. Swapping shirts is usually reserved for the end of a match, not at half-time. But the habit has occurred among Premier League foreign players in recent seasons. Kenya needs Sh1.2 billion to host IAAF World Youth Championships Kenya will need Sh1.2 billion to make the 2017 IAAF World Youth Championships in Nairobi a success, Athletics Kenya AK has said. The huge budget means Kenya has her work cut out to bring to the capital more than 2,000 athletes and officials from 150 countries. AK President Isaiah Kiplagat admitted it is a huge challenge and that AK requires the requisite financial muscle to

realise its dream of hosting the event. “After being awarded the hosting rights, now we have the huge task ahead of us of raising Sh1.2 billion. We appeal to the Government and the corporate world to come to our aid in terms of sponsorship,” Kiplagat said. “We are a global powerhouse in athletics and this is a golden opportunity to market this great nation to the world.

We expect many visits during the event and we must not let them and ourselves down.” AK will in the coming week set up a Local Organising Committee (LOC) office to start preparations. Kenya will be the second African country to host the prestigious athletics event established in 1999 after Morocco staged the Championships in 2005.

Pele jokes he is fit to play Pele has joked that he is ready to play for Brazil after being released from hospital in Sao Paulo. The 74-year-old admitted he had a “scare” after spending several days in intensive care. After successful treatment for a urinary tract infection, the three-time World Cup-winner talked about helping his country to Olympic football gold in Rio in 2016. He said: “I’m well and recovered, and now I am preparing for the

Olympics.” Pele has only one kidney, having had one removed towards the end of his playing career. He was admitted to Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital on November 24 after being diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that stemmed from surgery to remove kidney stones 11 days earlier. The former Santos and New York Cosmos striker will continue recovering at home.

“I’d like to thank the doctors that took care of me. It was a real fight. “I would like to thank God - and all friends that have sent me messages and were worried about me. “It was something I was not expecting, but I was not afraid to die. Pele continued with a joke, adding: “Now I am preparing for the Olympics. Three professionals can play in the Olympics and I’m one of the three.

Liverpool knocked out as champs Real, Juve,Monaco advance Liverpool’s wretched Champions League campaign came to a disappointing conclusion as they failed to beat Basel at Anfield and saw their hopes of reaching the knockout phase evaporate. Steven Gerrard - who dragged Liverpool through to victory in a similar situation against OIympiakos at Anfield a decade ago - threatened to do so again when his brilliant late free-kick equalised Fabian Frei’s first-half goal for the Swiss. Real Madrid set a new Spanish record of 19 successive wins as they advanced to the Champions League last 16 with a routine 4-0 victory over Ludogorets. Ronaldo reached 30 goals for the sixth straight season and increased his Champions Leaugue total to 72, two behind Lionel Messi’s record Juventus (3-2-1) advanced with typical Italian caution, drawing 0-0 at home against Atletico Madrid (4-1-1), which topped Group A. Olympiakos beat Malmo 4-2 to finish third and shift to the last 32 of the Europa League. Monaco (3-1-2) won 2-0 over Zenit St. Petersburg (2-3-1) to win Group C over second-place Bayer Leverkusen (3-2-1), which drew 0-0 at last-place Benfica.

Borussia Dortmund (4-1-1) won Group D on goal difference by drawing 1-1 at home against Anderlecht, which started American midfielder Sacha Kljestan. Runner-up Arsenal won 4-1 at Galatasaray as Aaron Ramsey and Lukas Podolski each scored twice. Arsenal has advanced past the group stage in 15 straight years but will once again be unseeded in the draw next Monday, where Madrid and Bayern Munich are potential opponents. Back to Liverpool, up until Gerrard’s equaliser, this was not an occasion in the famous Anfield tradition of European nights, The Kop silenced for long periods except when voicing frustration at a side that has lost its way since coming so close to winning the Premier League last season. Liverpool may claim injustice after substitute Lazar Markovic was sent off after coming on and delivering a promising cameo. But once he senselessly raised his arm in the direction of the pursuing Behrang Safari, he was running the risk of a red card. It is another setback in a disappointing season for manager Brendan Rodgers, who must now galvanise players who looked devastated at the final whistle for a Europa League campaign.
