in the city. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said investigations on how they came to possess the dangerous explosives are in progress. “We are also interrogating them to see if we can get more information from them,” he said. Couple held in terror raid From Page 1 The 1 am raid also saw more than 400 people arrested in a police crackdown on terror suspects. The arrest are not however linked to the Monday night twin explosions in the area which killed six people and injured scores of others. Police arrested 657 suspects in a night

operation after the operation. Interior cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku says the operations will continue until all suspects are arrested. “The operation will continue until all suspects and perpetrators of terror are brought to book,” said Lenku. He said most of those injured in the Monday blast have since been treated and discharged.

Only ten are still being treated for multiple injuries sustained in the blast. Survivors said the attackers could have been arrested had people acted swiftly suspicions on some suspects before they unleashed terror. The victims said although they suspected two men of plotting the killings, no one raised alarm.

Lenku has asked residents to cooperate with security personnel and volunteer information on suspicious characters. Police have since said the explosives were caused by Improvised Explosive Devises. International forensic experts, including US FBI agents, have joined the probe into the Eastleigh blast.

Kenyan among Google Africa Connected competition winners Sitawa Wafula was among the five winners of the Google Africa Connected competition. The contest sought to gather inspirational stories that show the impact of the web and Google products in the daily lives of Africans. Sitawa used Google Blogger to set up a blog on mental health in East Africa. He said he intends to build a physical resource centre where people can access information online and get help to manage their conditions. “I feel humbled and honored that mental health and epilepsy which are considered taboo topics - have been put on the same platform as innovative projects. I can’t believe that doing what comes so naturally to me, to help raise awareness about mental health, would be recognised by a company like Google, and be such an inspiration to others,” said Wafula of the recognition. The five winners were selected from over 2,200 entries from 35 countries and took home Sh2.1million each.

Murdered Muslim cleric buried at night Fiery Muslim cleric Sheikh Abubakar Sharif, popularly known as Makaburi, was buried in the dead of the night hours. The burial came hours after he was gunned down by unknown attackers in Mombasa. The burial took place as angry youth went on the rampage to protest his killing. The preacher was shot dead by gunmen as he and two others waited for gates to be opened at

Shanzu Law Courts inside the heavily guarded Shimo la Tewa Prison. Riots immediately broke out in parts of Mombasa as news of his shooting spread across the town yesterday evening. His killing came barely two days after police linked him to the killing of worshippers at a church in Likoni two weeks ago. The radical Muslim preacher’s allegiance to terrorists was

heightened after he sensationally claimed the Westgate terror attack in September last year in which more than 67 people were killed was justified. In July last year, a UN monitoring unit also linked him to activities of Al Hijra in Mombasa, Nairobi and Tanzania. He has also been accused of recruiting Muslim youth into Al-Shabaab ranks and radicalising them. He has

NEW ALBUM

LinkedIn users risk hacking

A new Michael Jackson album, titled ‘Xscape’ will be released May 13, 2014, Epic Records Chairman, LA Reid has said. The new album will feature eight new tracks from the late artist’s archive. Reid, who trawled through four decades of Jackson’s music, including demos and off-cuts, chose the playlist himself. The tracks have been updated by music artist, Timbaland, who works with Justin Timberlake, and Stargate, who produced other musicians including Rihanna and Beyonce. “Michael left behind some musical performances that we take great pride in presenting through the vision of music producers that he either worked directly with or expressed strong desire to work with,” said Reid.

The email addresses of LinkedIn users can be easily exposed to un-authorised people via a web browser add-on tool, it has been revealed. Installation of a Sell Hack, available as a free extension to the Chrome browser, will pop up a “hack in” button into LinkedIn profiles. This allows users to access emails associated with the account even if they are offline. LinkedIn said it will take legal action against Sell Hack which insists that the tool helps marketing professionals. On its website it said: “We just do the heavy lifting and complicated computing to save you time. We aren’t doing anything malicious to LinkedIn.” LinkedIn said it is working to shut down Sell Hack for several violations.

Handshake taboo as Ebola terrifies Guinea After an outbreak of the deadly Ebola, people in Guinea are avoiding handshakes and opting for other methods of salution that do not involve pysical contact. People are also avoiding going out for fear of infection as funeral gatherings get thinner. “I don’t go to funerals whether it is an Ebola-related death or not, or whether it is my relation that has died,” teacher Mariam Mansare told BBC. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that 83 people in Guinea have died in suspected cases of Ebola. The virus is spread by by close contact and kills between 25% and 90% of victims. However, WHO also confirmed that the outbreak remains in a “limited geographic area”. WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said it was neither an epidemic, nor unprecedented. “We need to be careful about how we characterise something which is up to now an outbreak with sporadic cases,” Mr Hartl told reporters in Geneva, Switzerland. The WHO says the outbreak was centred around Guinea’s remote south-eastern region of Nzerekore. It took the authorities six weeks to pick it out and launch contro measures.

1,100 Kisii civic workers have bogus papers Up to 1,100 staff of Kisii County risk losing their jobs after they failed to produce original papers to the county Public Service Board during an exercise to get rid of ghost workers. The board chairman David Kombo said the workers did not furnish the board with original IDs, letters of appointment and promotion and original school certificates. “We have established that there are 1,100 employees who failed to produce authentic documents,” said Kombo while addressing journalists in Kisii town on Tuesday. The names of the staff have been put up on the county website to ensure they produce the relevant papers or have their names struck off the county’s payroll. Kisii is among the counties that is trying to shake up county staff by getting rid of ghost staff to ensure efficiency. Kombo said more than 300 employees missed the exercise while 100 others carried two ID cards with different dates of birth. Kombo said some of the employees had tampered with ID cards to delay retirement. The board has issued a onemonth notice to the culprits to provide relevant and valid documents.

Women who have sex with ‘cut’ men less likely to get HIV Women who engage in sex with circumcised men are less likely to contract HIV even if they don’t use protection, a new research says. The study which was conducted last month in Johannesburg sampled a total of 5, 561 women aged between 15 and

49. The survey which was conducted by researchers from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded Bophelo Pele consisted three independent polls conducted in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Bophelo is a voluntary medical centre in Johannesburg. In the surveys,

30% of the women who had ever had sex reported having only circumcised partners confirming that male circumcision reduces chances of acquiring HIV through sex. The findings were presented at the 2014 conference on retroviruses and opportu-

nistic infections. This is not the first time such a study has been conducted. In 2009, Johns Hopkins University researcher Aaron A R and colleagues showed that male circumcision reduces HIV infection, genital herpes and prevents cervical cancer.

The study involved more than 1,200 HIV-negative, heterosexual couples living in Uganda. The study was done at a time when circumcision of male adults was increasingly encouraged as a way of slowing the spread of HIV/Aids. After two years,

the researchers did another survey and found out that the female partners of men who remained uncircumcised were more likely than the partners of the circumcised men to be infected with HIV and human papilloma virus (HPV).

Court blocks Kenyans from bombing payout Families and victims of the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Nairobi have been excluded from a Sh77 billion compensation awarded to their Tanzanian and US counterparts. A ruling by Washington judge John Bates indicates that the Kenyans have been directed to proceed to a federal court and file a compensation suit. The August 7, 1998 bombing at the US embassy in Nairobi killed up to 224 Kenyans and injured another 4,650. The judge awarded the damages based on emotional injury whose victims would receive Sh261million. Those who suffered severe physical injuries will receive Sh435 million, while blindness and quadriplegics victims will get Sh609 million. “This judgment is a significant step in assuring these American and Tanzanian victims of terrorism receive justice for the suffering they experienced as a result of calculated mayhem by the governments of Sudan and Iran,” lead lawyer for the plaintiffs Fortune Fay said. The attack killed 12 US nationals along with 10 Tanzanians. Fay has warned terrorists that they would dearly pay for their actions. “Countries that sponsor, promote, and execute terrorism must recognise that murdering Americans have an array of costs – political, diplomatic, and financial,” said Fay.

Police in bus stop warning Police have warned members of the public to avoid a popular meeting point on Moi Avenue near the Ambassadeur Hotel, Nairobi, saying it is a terrorist bombing target. Police say the venue tops the list of targets of terrorism. In a revelation of the most risky areas that are on targeted by the criminals, police have urged the public to also shun churches and shopping malls in the city centre. “We urge residents to be careful when approaching the areas and only to go there if they have to,” Nairobi deputy police boss Moses Ombati said. Other targets include entertainment joints and government installations. Twin explosions hit terror prone Eastleigh suburb on Monday evening killing at least six people and wounding several others.

Residents get land documents Residents of Nairobi’s Mwiki, Kasarani and Embakasi areas were yesterday issued with allotment letters which will serve as title deeds. Governor Evans Kidero who issued the 708 letters to Chieko Housing Limited gave orders that the owners be issued with the letters in two months to serve as title deeds. There was drama as plot owners opposed the move as they demanded that the Governor issues the letters directly to them. It took the intervention of Kidero and Kasarani MP Njoroge Chege to calm down the protests. Members of Chieko Plot Owners Association who had bought plots from Chieko Housing Ltd disrupted the process. CPOA’s Secretary Eliud Wang’ondu said they deserved to be given the ownership papers since they negotiated with the Nairobi City Council for the reduction of the Sh279 million rates bill to Sh42 million in 2009. Chieko Housing Limited, however, defended the move, saying such documents could not be obtained without their approval. They vowed to hasten the process to ensure other 1,300 plot owners also receive allotment letters soon.

Kimaiyo opposes bail for terror suspects Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo wants the law amended to stop terror suspects from securing bail after arrest. Kimaiyo argues that the law safeguards human rights but has placed obstacles in the war on terror and called for amendments. The request comes as some government officials warned against issuing bail to dangerous suspects who are likely to inflict more misery on innocent civilians. The renewed calls coincided with the shooting to death of fiery Muslim cleric Sheikh Abubakar who was out on a Sh1 million bond after he was charged with being a member of the Al-shabaab terror group. More than 400 terror suspects have been arrested since terrorists started unleashing attacks in Kenya. A number of the suspects have been bailed out. Police

say such suspects have committed worse crimes while on bail. In June last year, a Nairobi court released two Iranians, Ahmad Abolfathi Mohammad and Sayed Mansour Mousavi, on a Sh2 million bail. They had been arrested on suspicion of planning attacks on Israeli, Western and Jewish targets. Another terror suspect, Maina Mwangi, accused of hurling a grenade at a guest house in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Dec 16 was released on Sh10m bond awaiting hearing of his case. Four Somalia nationals arrested in connection with a blast at JKIA were also released on Sh20 million bond, but the Director of Public Prosecutions thwarted their release. Matatus back on the roads

Traffic accidents down by 25 pc, says ministry

The new public transport regulations announced by the Government three months ago have cut road carnage by up to 25 per cent. Transport Principal Secretary Nduva Muli said the introduction of breathalisers, popularly known as alcoblow, have had a massive impact in reducing

accidents. Muli was addressing a joint briefing at Harambee House, Nairobi, by government ministries on the progress they have so far made. “The alcoblow has so far been effective as road carnage has gone down by 25 per cent,” he said. The ban on night travel has been hailed

as the biggest contributor to reduced road deaths. Mr Muli, however, said several PSV buses are on the verge of securing licenses to operate at night after meeting the necessary requirements. He denied claims that the government was scheming to run the public transport

sector through the new rules that seeks to regulate the industry. “ An effective transport system can be run by the private sector and the government has no intentions of taking over,” he said. He said the government’s only intention is to create a safe and conducive environment in the sector.

Matatu owners had on Tuesday had kept their vehicles off the road for fear that they could be impounded by police following the expiry of the deadline for vehicles to comply with the new rules on March 31. They told the court that there were about 24,000 speed gargets available against demand by over 100,000 vehicles countrywide. Less than 10,000 vehicles had complied with the new laws by Tuesday, causing a transport crisis as vehicles kept off roads. However, the High Court suspended the enforcement of the law and issued a stay on the matter pending further instructions expected to be issued today. Commuters and travellers across the country were forced to walk to destinations or call off journeys as the rest paid hiked fares in the available matatus. But normal operations resumed this morning with no cases of exorbitant fares charged for city routes. Operators through their welfare chairman Dickson Mbugua said they are ready to comply with the new laws but need more time to deal with the scarcity of the gadgets.

Fuel prices drive cost of living higher COOKING FUEL:The rising cost of cooking fuel has increased the price of living.

The cost of housing, water, power, gas and other fuels went up 0.28 per cent due to higher prices of common cooking fuels. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) says rising kerosene and cooking gas prices have driven living costs up. The Consumer Price Index, a unit used to measure the average price of consumer goods and services, rose by 0.25 per cent to 146.61 in March from 145.95 in February. Inflation slowed

to 6.27 from 6.86 per cent during the period. The KNBS report says a kilogram of beans went up by 2.97 per cent to Sh100.89 from Sh97.98 as that of sugar fell by 1.98 per cent to Sh109.89 from Sh112.12 in February. A two kilogramme packet of maize flour rose by 0.30 per cent from Sh113.22 to retail at Sh113.55, while a two kilogramme of wheat flour fell by 0.74 per cent to retail at Sh136.50 from

Sh137.57. A litre of kerosene rose by 0.98 per cent to Sh84.65 from Sh83.83, while a litre of diesel dropped by 0.55 per cent to retail at Sh106.34 from Sh106.92. The CPI measures inflation, one of the greatest threats to a healthy economy. Its main function is to help the government determine whether economic policies need to be modified to check inflation.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) will embark on a multi-million shilling investment in Sub-Sahara Africa to create about 500 jobs. The multinational company plans to use the investment to step up its presence in the region, the company has revealed. Britain’s largest drug maker says it will invest over Sh3.6 billion into the creation of the world’s first open-access research and development (R&D) laboratory for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The research will target heart and lung disorders, diabetes and cancer in Africa. The company already manufactures drugs in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa and plans to build five factories across the region. The investment will create at least 500 jobs on top of the 1,500 it has produced in the region. Extra funding will be used in setting up 25 academic chairs at African universities and increase support for the training of community health workers. GSK has in the recent past

created job opportunities for undergraduate students, post-graduates and experienced professionals after setting up an online platform for potential recruits. “The transformation of Africa into a successful growth region is one area that we need to focus on,” said GSK Chief Executive, Sir Andrew Witty, in Brussels on Monday. “There is a great opportunity for business to play a role, alongside governments and other agencies, to help deliver improved infrastructure and create prosperity to lift people out of poverty for good.” The company has invested in improving access to vaccines, health staff, improving child nutrition and research for new drugs. The programmes have been launched in Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo. GSK is also in the advanced stages of developing the world’s first malaria vaccine, which could make a “significant impact” on the health of millions of young children.

Consumers must FBI probes US high speed trading firms study contracts before signing The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is investigating high-speed trading firms in US for alleged insider trading. High-speed trading involves traders creating complicated algorithms to buy and sell stocks in milliseconds. Such methods are said to give undue advantage to firms over humans and other computers by using ultra-high speed data network to manipulate stock prices through the millisecond. This is considered as unfair. The primary focus of the investigation will be whether trading firms are granted early information ahead of other investors. But FBI is probing other irregularities at the firms. These include trading methods involving firms placing large orders for trades in a company’s stock but cancel them after indicating that there is a

has drawn inquiry from several US regulator bodies concerned over the ability of firms to give accurate information on stock markets. FBI issued the first report on Monday. Meanwhile, the Nairobi

A contract is a legally binding agreement between two parties where each agrees to do something for the other. A contract is enforceable by law, states the Communications Commission of Kenya, the sector’s independent regulatory authority. Many consumers wrongly believe a contract must be written down and signed. This is not true. For instance, a contract comes into force when a passenger boards a bus and purchases a ticket. This entitles the passenger to a trip equivalent to the value of that ticket. The driver, is, in turn, responsible for getting thee passenger to his or her destination safely. For a consumer and a service vendor, the law comes into force if the terms of the contract are breached, the legal term for breaking an agreement. if a contract is broken,

either party can report to the nearest police station and file a statement. The Consumer Protection Act states that a consumer must understand that, having agreed to the terms of a contract, he or she has a legal obligation to honour them. Failure to do so may result in a suit filed against them for breach of the agreement. The consumer must also fully understand their contract by reading all terms and provisions contained before signing it. If any of the terms are unclear, they should request clarification from a vendor, a lawyer or some other informed person. A consumer who is not satisfied with the terms of a contract should refuse to sign it. Any customer who unwittingly signs a contract without taking time to study it will still be bound by the terms.

daily grind: Kenyans on the way to work. Unemploymet among Kenyans stands at about 40 per cent.

Jobless rate up by 40 per cent, says survey The number of jobless people in the country has jumped up by 40 per cent, says a survey by human resource consulting company, Corporate Staffing Services. According to their study, more than a third of employable Kenyans have no jobs. The company, which focused its study on Nairobi residents,

noted that the government has made efforts to create jobs through youth funding initiatives including the Uwezo Fund, the Youth Fund and the Women Fund, targeting recipients between the ages of 18 and 35. Despite a rising number of qualified graduates attempting to break into the formal em-

ployment every year, a many young people have opted to work on their own rather than look for white collar jobs. According to the survey, 29.5 per cent of Nairobians are running their own businesses, 11.2 per cent work in public institutions and only 7.6 per cent are employed in by NGOs.

“Job searching has become a full-time job for most of those unemployed,” says Corporate Staffing Managing Director, Perminus Wainaina. “Employees have also raised their expectations which current employers are not meeting and they hope the next employer would.” Their announcement comes

at a time when 800,000 people flock into the job market competing for only 50,000 positions, according to information from the World Bank. “First what we need to do is address the education system,” says Wainaina. “The fact that you have a degree does not entitle you to a formal job.

Fried fish earns

vendors Sh105,000

Nairobi market fish vendors can make up to Sh105, 000 a month from their business, says study by the University of Nairobi.

l Despite the potential to make high profits, the Journal of Enterprising Communities, which carried out a similar survey, estimates that the average income for the fish traders was Sh1, 268 per week. The investment capital needed for such a business is about Sh5, 000. This will cater for the first day’s stock, cooking oil and firewood. l 75 per cent of fried fish vendors in Nairobi get their supply from Lake victoria. This was attributed to low quality of farm fish meat and under-production from Lake Naivasha. The supply is sold in bulk in weights of between

Sh80 and Sh220 per kg. The study indicates that some businesses in City Market and Gikomba prefer sourcing their supply from nearby fish farms around Nairobi or Lake Naivasha to cut down on transportation costs. l The vendors have suppliers at Lake Victoria who purchase the fish in the morning and pack them in iceboxes. The containers are labeled with the recipient’s name for identification then Vendors receive their supply from 5.00am to 9.00am every day and send money via M-Pesa to the supplier. l On average, the least sale on an off-peak season was approximated to 20 kilograms per businessperson or about Sh7, 000. l The highest sale on a peak season was estimated to 300kg Sh105, 000.

Wesida is a non-profit microfinance organisation run on a voluntary basis and founded by a small business community. It offers loans of between Sh5, 000 and Sh300, 000 at an interest rate of 25 per cent per annum. It is run by support from each member’s subscriptions, voluntary contributions and both locally and international donors. The group says participants must save or contribute between Sh300 and Sh6, 000 a month to qualify for a loan. Membership is open to small-scale business owners aged over 18 and allows participants to get loans of up to three times their account balance. To join, participants must pay a non-refundable membership fee of Sh600 and an additional Sh250 for a savings pass book The group says that a member must have consistent savings of 12 months from the month their account was opened. “Our activities range from supporting beneficiaries set up micro and small-scale businesses,” says the lender. “Training in business management skills, business development services, and disbursement of small and micro loans depending on the amount saved by the member.”

Pig farming turns teacher’s fortunes

Pigs in a sty. Farmer Mary namaganda makes up to Sh450,000 a year from the sale of pork.

Six years ago, Mary Namaganda’s health was deteriorating. With a meagre teacher’s salary, she had two children to support and was nearing the end of the rope when she discovered pig farming. Now, she makes close to half a million shillings a year. “Money from teaching was meagre and I had so many demands,” she recalls. “My health was deteriorating and I needed time to rest yet I had to earn. I decided to slow down on my work and decided to start farming.” Once she visited a friend in Kikuba Mutwe who advised to take up pig farming. She launched her business with only 4 hogs, 3 sows and one male. “I was excited when I earned a lot of money from my first pigs. So I decided to specialize in just pigs,” she mentions.

It wasn’t long before she caught the attention of the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) team, a group that helps small scale farmers secure funding and resources to grow their businesses. “They decided that I needed more money,” she explains. “It was the technical advice on good practices that I needed most. This has made all the difference,” Less than a decade later and her little farm has grown into a quarter acre with 80 sows. Her business gives her more than Sh450, 000 a year. “I am happy,” says Namaganda. “I have six mother pigs now that produce three times a year. They produce over 10 piglets each. I don’t regret leaving my teaching profession. I earn much more money and my health has greatly improved.”

The patience of caring for an autistic child Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Today is World Autism Day. Those who feel hopeless about their autistic children or siblings may draw strength and inspiration from the revelation that Bill Gates, one of the world’s richest men is said to have had Asperger’s, an autistic trait. Autistic kids are sometimes considered a curse and some parents of such children sometimes choose the terrible option of hiding them even though it’s an offence according to the Kenya Disability Act 2003. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurological disorders, characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviour. It affects 4 per cent of the Kenyan population. Autistic children need attention all the time. This can be a drain on parents’ and care givers’ patience and Mary, a mother of a six-year-old autistic boy knows all about it. First, getting help for boy’s condition was difficult. “I have been to therapy sessions in various places like the Autism Society of Kenya Centre but each day that passed nothing changed,” says Mary. “I have followed a strict diet but there was still no hope.” Even finding a school that take care of her child’s special needs was a problem. Mary says she enrolled her son in a

special school but withdrew him because “he learnt bad behaviours from other children” “I was filled with anger, pity and remorse. It is all I felt each day,” Mary says. She turned to the internet to try and get for the boy. “One day I found a video on you-tube about an autistic boy who could sing and the video moved me to tears. That changed my life and filled me with hope for my child.” She says her child never used to speak but

She weeps and sweats blood Imagine waking up sweating and crying blood. Four years ago, teenager from Dominican Republic found herself thrust in a nightmare that was unknown to her and many. Delfina Cedeno developed an unusual disorder where she cried and sweated blood. Her nose and navel also dripped with blood. Her condition was so grave that she once bled non-stop for 15 days leaving her weak and in need of a blood transfusion. Scorned and humiliated, she confined herself to her bedroom. To evade more shame from society, she had to drop out of school. Doctors tested her but were not able to diagnose her illness. She was depressed and the isolation worsened the situation. She became suicidal and once tried to take her life but luckily doctors man-

aged to resuscitate her. Last year however, all that changed. Her doctors eventually diagnosed her rare condition to be Hematedrosis, a condition which her adrenaline levels are heightened nearly 20 times more than a normal. The results also showed that she had anxiety attacks which raised her blood pressure to a point where she would sweat blood. This means blood vessels narrowed and strained from the pressure when she was stressed then burst causing blood to permeate her sweat glands. Medics are treating her for anxiety which has resulted in a reduction and control of her bleeding. While in hospital, she had another life changing experience; she fell in love with a visitor who had heard of her plight and they plan to marry.

Breathing facts about the nose A nose is one of the parts of the body you look at every almost everyday but know very little about. About 85 per cent of human beings breathe through one nostril at time. This may last for more than three hours before a switch. Your nose completes a switch to the other through an erectile tissue in your nose. It swells and blocks one nostril while the erectile muscle in the other nostril shrinks allowing breathing. A 1993 study showed that when one breaths through the right nostril you use more oxygen than the left. When you breathe through the left nostril, the right half of your brain will be more active as compared to the left, says a 1994 study published in Basic Science, Clinical Trials, and Selected Advanced Techniques journal. When you cry, your nose runs because tears flow

since that day she promised to give him a little more love. She started teaching him at home with the help of internet and with time, got more information on how to care for her child, how to feed and even play with him. “This was when things started coming through, my child could look me in the eye and point at something and oh my God! It was just the one thing I had been longing for since I had him,” says Mary. She says the boy can now count to seven seven.

internally into the nostril. Tears flow through a duct that connects the eye to the nose, then the mucus mix with tears to give the slippery liquid. A recent study by Rockefeller University in New York City established that a human nose can smell more than a trillion scents. Humans can identify their kin by odour. Studies have shown that babies a few weeks old can identify and be attracted the breast of their specific mothers and not others, a fact not based on memory. The identification is based on a mechanism called Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). Women have a better sense of smell to men. Science suggests this helps them identify compatible partners because they are likely to make stable and more permanent relationships.

Luhya bulls are fed on chang’aa for public fights Bull fighting among members of the Luyia community is a deep rooted, inter-clan cultural source of entertainment. The event is used to measure the animals’ strength against each other. The sport has gone a step further by rewarding owners of the winning bull as a motivation. The event is organised to mark a certain period or an important episode whenever there is a sponsor. The sport is common among Luyia sub tribes of Idakho and Isukha who inhabit Kakamega. Khayega and Malinya are the main arenas for the spectacular event. Ochande Shimoli says an entire clan provides the best bull for the competition. If many animals are provided by clans, they undergo an elimination process until the best from each side remains to face each other in the final fight. The clans taking a bull for the fight have to adequately prepare their ‘hero’. The bull is fed the previous night with nappier grass molasses and banana leaves to give it the energy it needs. Busaa or chang’aa and a mixture of bhang are warmed

for the bull so that it can be brave, confident and fully charged. A victor must have been well fed and in good health. It is also trained in the best tactics prior to the event. The final candidates take on each other in the duel at the crack of dawn as highly charged villagers from rival clans cheer their bull to fight harder through traditional songs and Isikuti dance. The spectators cheer the animals with famous nicknames coined for the animals such as Gaddafi, Mamuluki, Uhuru, Mariga, Mukangala, Messi, Saddam, and Tsunami. Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale’s bull is named Khwanyumba. Three referees monitor the horn locking until one of the fighters resigns and runs away from the battlefield. The hero is praised with songs and dance in an honourable escort home. Kwalwale’s bull has been trouncing rivals in the past, but Khwanyumba lost the last fight held this year. The senator hails from the Bashimuli clan and has been sponsoring the event for a long time.

Ice diving a chilly idea for winter thrill seekers cold fun: An ice diver enjoys his thing. Ice diving provide a thrill for scuba divers who can’t stay away from water in the winter.

Ordinarily, one would expect the onset of winter to shut down most outdoor activities, especially water sports. Not for a breed of thrill seekers called ice divers. Ice diving is basically, the winter version of scuba diving which needs additional training because it takes place under ice and typically has a single entry/exit point, making it much more dangerous than regular diving. Ice diving is a team sport that

quoteit “The only limits to the possibilities in your life tomorrow are the buts you use today.” — Les

requires more than just the diver but also a surface crew. A fully equipped safety diver should be standing by at the surface, with a well-secured safety line. In case of an emergency, the safety diver can jump in come to the aid of the diver. Ice diving can be dangerous, mainly because the diver submerges far underneath the surface in cold water and may freeze to death or may get attacked by wild cold water animals.

A snow shovel is used to clear the snow before cutting a hole in the ice, which done by a chainsaw. Once that is done, the diver readies himself for the dive. Once under the ice, of course the first thing they will feel is the extreme cold but it will hard to ignore the spectacular ice formations and landscapes that no one ever gets to see first hand. Ice divers get to experience pure escapism beneath the surface of an

ice covered lake, they marvel at the ice formations and shafts of light penetrating through the frozen surface that create a kaleidoscopic array of colours when day-light is refracted through the ice above. They also get to see the marine life such as snails, crabs, sea butterflies, brightly coloured starfish, interesting jellyfish, and various types of cold-water fish species. It is pure escapism from the land above.

We usually think that train surfing, bungee jumping or even volcano boarding is crazy. Yes, they are but what about limbo-skating? Complete lunacy. First, this game appears to be near-impossible. If roller skating requires an acute sense of balance, what about doing it underneath parked cars? Now that’s limbo-skating. This rage is gaining popularity in India where many young daredevils try it out but only after intense training. They first look for strength then the balance of a gymnast. When the two merge perfectly, we have the makings of a world class limbo-skater. What follows is stretching of muscles to extreme levels under extreme danger of thrashing your skull beneath a car never to live to tell the story of the force that drove you to trying it. The skaters first gather speed down a ramp in an upright position. When they approach the parked cars, they do the split and stretch their hands to touch their feet almost prostrating themselves. It’s an extremely dangerous manuovre as the skaters just have an inch or two of headroom to work with as they streak underneath the cars at frightening speeds. A small mistake and a skater will smash this head on any of the protruberances in the belly of the car.

Frontline Commando is not your average third person shooter. As one of the most popular action/ adventure games on the Android operating system, Frontline follows the story of a grizzled soldier tas he shoots his way across a battlefield. The game is based on a cover system where player hide behind barriers and open fire whenever they spot an enemy. Despite it’s action-packed levels and awe-inspiring graphics, the game has a number of flaws. Frontline lets players upgrade their weapons but the best arsenal is reserved for those willing to part with real cash. the levels can get a little repetitive and the reaction time for aiming the weapons is a little slow. All things considered, its worth a try.

Bale rings revenge bells for Dortmund Real Madrid star Gareth Bale remains optimistic his side has a chance to exact revenge on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night. Dortmund had the upper hand against Madrid as the sides met four times in last season’s competition. Jurgen Klopp’s men took four points from a possible six in the group stage before eliminating the nine-time European champions 4-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals. The winger he is eager to face the side that ruthlessly defeated Madrid at the semi-finals last season. “I think it was important we responded well and got everything back on track,” he said “We’re massively looking forward to the Dortmund game. That is why you want to be playing football is to play in the big games. We are

fully focussed on Wednesday night and hopefully we can do a good job,” he said. Bale scored a double as Real responded to losing to Barcelona and Sevilla last week to beat Rayo Vallecano 5-0 on Saturday. Real remain in third place in La Liga, three points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid. However, it is a Champions League quarter-final clash against the Germans that has whetted the Welshman’s appetite as he admitted these are the type of games for which he left Tottenham Hotspur for Real last summer. Bale will once again join Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in a fearsome Madrid frontline with Ronaldo looking to equal Lionel Messi’s record of 14 goals in a Champions League season.

Djokovic eyes Monte Carlo Masters crown

king of hard court: Djokovic beat world number 1 Rafael Nadal to lift the Sony Open title.

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic is already looking forward to the annual Monte Carlo Masters to be held in three weeks’ time. Djokovic was at his best form on Sunday to beat No.1 Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-3 to lift his fourth Sony Open title. Djokovic joins Roger Federer as the only men to win Indian Wells and Miami in the same season twice; the Serb also accomplished the feat during the 2011 season. “I played a great match,” Djokovic said. “From the start to the end, everything was working really well.” “If I play this way, I think I have a very good chance against him on clay as well,” said Djokovic who is regarded as the champion of hard court. The two could reunite in three weeks at the Monte Carlo Masters, something that does little to puzzle Djokovic. “It has been a great season for me. I beat Roger Federer in the final at Indian Wells and then Nadal for the Miami championship. It doesn’t get much better than that,” he says.

Injured Bolt out of Diamond League Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt said he is puzzled by a foot injury that will rule him out of racing until mid-June for the Ostrava meeting in the Czech Republic. The multiple world and Olympic champion will miss the Diamond League meeting in Rome in June. He was beaten by American Justin Gatlin at the same track last season. Bolt is not sure whether he will run in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He is still scheduled to run in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on June 17 and then in Paris on July 5, but is not yet committed to competing for Jamaica at the Commonwealth Games

in Scotland. “I visited a clinic in Munich, Germany, last week for treatment on a foot injury but returned to Jamaica to resume training this week,” said the 27-year-old His coach, Glen Mills, has said Bolt will leave it late before deciding on whether to compete in Glasgow after a ‘long and arduous past three seasons’. He however admitted that the event is still ‘on the table’ for the world’s fastest man. Luigi D’Onofrio, meeting director of Rome’s Golden Gala event, said: “We have been following the story with concern because of the agreement we had with his management.”

Kisumu Simba look ahead to African hockey tournament Kisumu Simba coach, Cliffe Okello has said he is pleased with the team’s performance in the just concluded domestic championship.

Okello said even though they failed in the attempt to win the title, playing in THE African championship was an acceptable achievement.

“We were expected to score eight goals in order to win the league title. That was not an easy and my players panicked before the

game,” he said. “As a team we are however, pleased with our team’s performance this season having achieved our objective of qualifying for the

continental competition,” he said. The former champions will join champions Kenya Police in the 2014 Africa Club Cup

championships whose venue and date is yet to be made official. Simba last won the Kenyan league in 2008.

Matano tells his players’ to fix their fragile mentality

giAnt KillerS: Bandari players during their game against tusker. they take on AFC leopards in the KPl top 8 match on Satuday.

Bandari eye AFC scalp Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards on the trot is not the kind fixture list that lesser clubs like Bandari look forward to with enthusiasm. However, after the docker’ chastening of K’Ogallo in Mombasa last weekend, coach Twahir Muhiddin can’t wait for his team’s KPL Top 8 clash against the Leopards

It was only Bandari’s second league win of the season after the 2-1 win over Kenya Revenue Authority but Muhiddin says it was thoroughly deserved and it has given his team a lift. “There was pressure coming into the match because we had gone several matches without victory. So we

needed a big performance,” Muhiddin said Bandari are indebted to Aloice Mangi and Victor Majid for the goals that gave them victory. Danny Sserunkuma scored for the champions as the match ended 2-1. “The urgency from the entire team was encouraging. They

fought all the way even after Gor equalized. It was a big victory,” added the coach. The KPL Top 8 is unfamiliar territory for Bandari but Muhiddin says the players will not overawed by making their debut in the tournament against such a high profile side. “My players are psyched ahead of the match,

it will be huge, no doubt, especially coming after Gor win,” He said. “Victory means a lot when it comes to boosting the team morale, that is the kind of form we want to carry to the weekend match.” Bandari finished sixth last season a result that saw them qualify for the knock out completion.

Ulinzi Stars head coach Robert Matano has urged his players to change their mentality and be more relaxed on the field of play. The soldiers have not won a match seven games into the 2014 KPL season. Matano first match in charge ended in1-1 draw against Thika United, a result that left the 2010 champions in 13th on the KPL table with a mere six points. “The great fighting spirit shown against Thika United was not enough. I want my players to play in a more relaxed manner, the kind of pressure they are in will do them more damage,” said the straight talking tactician. “I know it has not been easy going seven matches without a win, the players need more mental focus and start enjoying their football more.” The 2012 league winning coach with Tusker said some departments of the team need to be strengthened. The coach said it will not be long before the military men bag their first points of the season. Matano is also glad for the distraction afforded by the KPL Top 8 knockout tournament which he says will give his players a break from what has been a depressing league run for them so far. “Maybe that is blessing in disguise, a little bit distraction in the form of the knock out competition will do us good. The players need to rediscover their form,” said Matano who replaced Salim Ali a week ago.

Kenya Rugby Union chairman Mwangi Muthee has called for patience even as pressure amounts against head coach Paul Treu. Speaking after yet another dismal outing by the Kenya 7s team in

Hong Kong, Muthee said the South African needs to be supported and given time. “Treu’s core mission was to build a team for 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that has not changed,” said the chairman.

“It’s not the coaches’ undoing that performance has dipped, I have a strong belief the team will fire once the players gel and get used to Treu‘s methods,” he said. Kenya slipped two places down the HSBC Sevens

Tuzo signed a two year deal with Gor Mahia on April 1 2011. But when the contract expired in 2013, Tuzo extended it for another year. “It should be known that it was Tuzo who decided not to renew their contract with Gor Mahia.
