Muslim leaders cry foul over operation hot spot: a section of the sprawling Eastleigh estate. The area has been at the centre of security operations to weed out suspected agents of terror.

The on-going operation to weed out agents of terror in Eastleigh and other areas has elicited mixed reactions. Political and religious leaders from the Muslim community claim the government has

“unfairly targeted their people in the operation. The reaction comes even as President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto pledged more efforts aimed at weeding out criminals from among

members of the public. The two distanced the government from claims that it was targeting a particular religion or community in the operation.

Leaders cry foul over operation From Page 1

“Our main aim is to protect all Kenyans. We are not targeting any religion or tribe but fighting terrorists who are killing innocent Kenyans,” President Kenyatta said. His remarks came barely a day after House Majority Leader Aden Duale led some 20 MPs from the Islam community in condemning police operations in Eastleigh. The Garissa Township MP threat-

ened to withdraw support for the government if the “discrimination and arbitrary arrests” of his constituents continued. “It should not be taken that we are against fighting terrorism. We are only concerned about the manner in which it is being done with no regard at all for human rights,” said Wajir South MP Abdulahi Diriye. The Muslim leaders have consequently convened a three day retreat

at a secret location to look at ways of addressing among other issues, claims of radicalization of youths in various mosques across the country. Police have claimed that most youths who are hell-bent on committing terror crimes have been radicalized. Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has since warned politicians and religious leaders against inciting members of their commu-

nities against the operation. So far, more than 3000 people are being held by police at Pangani police station and the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani following the Eastleigh swoop which began last week. Nairobi deputy police boss Moses Ombati yesterday said police nabbed “bomb-making” materials during the operation targeting illegal immigrants. The seizure was done along

Eastleigh’s seventh street with the occupants of the house said to have escaped. “We suspect they jumped out of the window after they heard knocks on the door,” Mr Ombati said. Immigration officials have joinder the vetting of those arrested to ascertain the validity of the documents they have and their stay in the country.

Vybez Kartel insists he’s not guilty Popular Jamaican Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel and longtime protégé, Shawn Storm who were handed life sentences after being found guilty of the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams insist they are innocent The two, along with Kahira Jones and Andre ‘Mad Suss’ St. John were sentenced on Thursday, with Kartel being ineligible for parole for the first 35 years of his sentence, while Shawn Storm will not be eligible until 25 years into his sentence. Kartel, in a hand-written note to fans said, “I would first like to again reiterate that I never killed Clive Williams nor did I order his killing. To my family I want to say thank you for being there for me. Equally to my fans whose unremitting support matters to me! Bless, Kartel.” Among the items used as evidence in the case were voice notes telling a damning tale of the events leading up to August 2011 murder of Williams. In the said voice notes, Kartel continuously references the disappearance of ‘shoes,’ a code word for guns, according to testimony from the government of Jamaica’s main witness, Lamar Chow. An agitated Kartel can be heard threatening that if the said are not found ‘shoes’ by nightfall, either William or Chow could face fatal consequences.

Nacada proposes tougher laws to curb miraa chewing The national anti-drug agency, Nacada, has proposed tougher regulations to curb miraa chewing across the country. Director Fazul Mohamed over the weekend confirmed that the agency has proposed a ban on chewing of miraa between 8am and 5pm to curb the dangers associated with the stimulant. The new regulations are similar to those introduced by chairman John Mututho two years ago to control alcohol intake.

Mr Mututho had earlier revealed that the agency will push Parliament to enact laws to regulate miraa consumption. “We will not allow people to be chewing the whole day and daydreaming,” he said. He said he welcomes suggestions from buyers and sellers to find the best way of curbing extreme usage of the twig. And speaking on Sunday in Nairobi, Mr Fazul reiterated the agency’s commitment to regulate con-

sumption of the green leaf, saying the youth are wasting lives due to addiction. The move aimed to regulate the consumption of miraa will follow the route taken to control alcohol intake. Rwanda launches 20th fete since ‘94 genocide Rwanda today begun a week of official mourning to mark the 20th anniversary of the country’s 1994 genocide. President Paul Kagame is to light a torch which will burn for 100 days - the duration of the massacres in which Hutu extremists killed an estimated 800, 000 people - mostly ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Most of the victims of the genocide were attacked with machetes during 100 days of slaughter that began on April 6, 1994 shortly after Hutu President Juvenal Habyarimana was killed when his plane was shot down over the Rwandan capital. Some Christian leaders were implicated in the violence. The killings ended in July 1994 when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a Tutsi-led rebel movement

that entered the country from Uganda, marched on Kigali and seized control of the country. The week of mourning begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the national genocide memorial followed by the lighting of a flame at the Amahoro Stadium in the capital, Kigali. The torch has been carried across the country for the past three months, visiting 30 districts and passing from village to village. International leaders including former British PM Tony Blair, South African President Thabo Mbeki and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon are due to attend the ceremony. On Sunday, hundreds of people attended a Mass at Sainte-Famille Catholic church in Kigali to remember those who died in the church itself and elsewhere.

deadly bug The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) have taken measures to eradicate a dangerous insect that has been plaguing Kenyans across a number of counties. The bug, popularly referred to as the female sand fly, has become a major health problem especially for children under five years in at least 22 Counties, including Baringo, Pokot, Turkana,Wajir, Isiolo, Samburu, and Marakwet. The fly infects about 4,000 people annually with the disease called kala-azar that can kill if not treated. “We are worried that with the changing climate, the fly could either move or expand its range of habitation,” says Kemri Director Prof Solomon Mpoke. WHO, Kemri and the Ministry of health have since launched ‘Small Bite Big Threat’, a campaign aimed at stopping the outbreaks and saving thousands of lives in the process.

Signs of hope for missing Malaysian jet kin The hopes of family members of the individuals aboard the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 may have been boosted following the detection on Friday and Saturday of two signals in close proximity by a Chinese patrol ship.

In a separate area of the Indian Ocean on Sunday, an Australian ship picked up a signal. This according to retired Australian Air Chief Marshal, Angus Houston, who is coordinating the search. China reported that the

noises it heard were at a frequency matching those emitted by a plane’s emergency locator beacons but officials have stressed that there is no clear connection yet to the missing plane. The search has been characterized by many

false leads and many are still skeptical of the new information which the officials say could be very hard to prove. The signals detected by the Chinese search team came from very deep waters, nearly three miles to the bottom.

More ships are racing to the area to conduct follow-up work. The search enters its critical day today as the batteries powering the airplane’s locator beacons are estimated to have about a month of life in total, meaning the

acoustic signals could die out by the time the ships arrive on the scene, since the aircraft has been missing for a month. Up to a dozen planes and thirteen ships will be scouring three separate areas west of Perth, Australia.

Mock train derailment triggers panic in Kibera There was panic at Kibera slums, in Nairobi, during a mock train derailment exercise as hundreds of police officers were mobilised to the scene. Officials from National Disaster Operations Centre had organised the drill to test coordination of various departments in case of emergency. The units were supposed to identify emerging gaps in planning and determine what resource assistance are required in a large-scale operation. The operation started at about 5.30am and those who were not aware of the exercise ran helter skelter. Some media houses also fell into the prank and aired the information as others tweeted. Some officers who were aware of the drill “confirmed” to the media about the disaster. Kilimani OCPD Peter Katam said “Yes we have an incident in Kibera and we are evacuating those trapped in the derailment.” But Katam spoke from his office yet some of his seniors were not aware of the accident. Woman kills baby to win lover’s heart

A woman killed her oneyear-old baby by throwing it into a well to win the love of a man who had promised to marry her. Residents of Muthinji in Kuresoi North District said the woman had been promised marriage by a man who did not responsibility for the child. The desperate woman, who was arrested on Saturday, decided to get rid of the baby to win the man’s warmth. Police arrested her after other women in the village raised alarm after failing to spot the innocent soul for a while. The body was taken to Molo District Hospital. “Investigations are underway,’’ said Kuresoi police commander David Wambua. Wambua said the woman will be charged with murder.

Valley Railways, the military, National Disaster Operations Centre, police, Kenya Red Cross, St John Ambulance, and Fire Brigade responded to the simulated disaster. “The accident reported in Kibra was part of an emergency drill. No casualties. Thanking everyone involved for cooperation,” NDOC said in avtweet an hour later. The drill comes at a time when terror incidents have scared many Kenyans. The attacks have intensified since 2011 when Kenyan troops invaded Somalia to weed out Al-Shabaab militants. In Nairobi, police are on high alert over increased terror threats amid claims the railway is among the targets. Witnesses said the affected area was filled with smoke to create the impression that the train was on fire. An old coach was also abandoned at the scene to “confirm” the impression. Railways Police commandant Kirimi Ringera later confirmed the exercise was only a drill to establish response to emergency services, check evacuation and reaction of the public and media.

Women fury over randy rep’s exploits Women leaders are pursuing a county representative in Bungoma over claims that he impregnated a schoolgirl. Led by women representative Reginalda Wanyonyi, the leaders accused the leader of allegedly impregnating a Form One student and later assisting her to secure an abortion. “We have received numerous reports linking him to notorious tendencies of impregnating schoolgirls and the securing abortions for them,” she said. The girl told her parents of the incident after they questioned her after her health condition deteriorated. The county rep is reported to have tried to bribe the girl’s father not to break the news. The culprit is said to be notorious in luring young girls to bed and helping them secure abortions. Reginalda and other leaders have vowed to sue the representative for destroying gains made in ensuring more girls access education. She said male leaders were misusing girls from poor families with promises of better life. In 2012, former Kangundo MP Moffat Maitha was charged in court with defiling a 15-year-old primary school girl and giving her cash to conceal the crime.

Two workers unions have resolved to unite so as to strengthen the newly formed Public Service Trade Unions of Kenya (Pusetu). The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the University Non-Academic Staff Union have resolved to push for

more power for Knut as the sole defender of public servants’ rights. Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion and Charles Mukhwaya of the university union made the resolutions this morning. “When workers are under one union, their negotiating

power improves and that is what we have resolved to do,” Dr Mukhwaya said on Citizen TV. His sentiments were echoed by Mr Sossion who was also a guest at the interview. “We are calling on other unions to embrace this idea because the workers’

representation is what counts at the end of the day,” Mr Sossion said. He dismissed claims that the new union is a government project meant to weaken the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) under Francis Atwoli. Pusetu and Cotu have been

locked in a tussle over who should take charge of Labour Day celebrations with Cotu dismissing the new outfit as unregistered. Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi is expected to officiate at the official launch of the new trade union tomorrow.

Turkana demands more security at border points Turkana South MP James Lomenen has urged the government to beef up security at border points. Lomenen said some of the bandits raiding people in his constituency cross over from Uganda. “The clothes they wear and the language they speak tells that they have crossed over from Uganda.

The government needs to beef up its border security,” Lomenen told Xnews this morning. Five people were killed over the weekend after bandits attacked a village in Turkana and made away with livestock. “The government should adopt a new strategy and deal with cattle rustlers once and for all. Let our security agen-

cies pursue them and kill them,” the MP said. Among those killed over the weekend were two police reservists and Lomenen has blamed police boss David Kimaiyo for the killings. “Kimaiyo ordered that they be disarmed but we opposed the move. Now they can see what has happened.” The victims were reportedly killed

during a confrontation with the raiders. Yesterday, GSU officers were deployed in the area as police boost security in the conflict prone area. Elsewhere in Marigat, a GSU officer was killed after bandits ambushed them. Two others escaped with serious injuries according to Marigat police boss Kaunya Otulia.

Expansion to reduce black outs, WB says The frequency of power blackouts is expected to go down from an annual average of 70,000 to 51,000 in September 2016, a World Bank report has said. This is after the completion of the electricity expansion project being undertaken by Kenya Power, Rural Electrification Authority (REA), KENGEN and the Ministry of Energy. According to a status report by the World Bank, the implementation of the project is on course with all the main contracts in progress. “Delay beyond the closing date (September 30, 2016) of the project is not foreseen,” says the report. Currently the amount of power lost in transmission has gone up by 1.6 per cent from 17 per cent in 2010 to 18.60 per cent in 2014. The rise in loss has been linked to “overloading of the Nairobi-Mombasa 220KV line after the commissioning of the 115MW MSD Kipevu II plant without increase in transmission capacity.” Distribution losses have also gone up because more consumers are being connected to the low-voltage system, without expanding the medium voltage network, the report says. “Commercial losses have risen reflecting increased electricity theft.” However, if things go as planned, the transmission and distribution losses are expected to go down once the 400KV Mombasa-Nairobi line is commissioned in 2014/2015. The report also indicated that the Rural Electrification Master Plan was not annually updated as per recommendations, but a consultant had been recently recruited by the REA to help in process. Last week, KPLC Nairobi South Regional Manager Joshua Mwangi, confirmed that refurbishment of 10 substations has already started.

new units: Nairobi residents face a serious shortage in housing in coming years due to prohibitive costs of construction permits and high bank lending rates.

City house prices highest in Africa Nairobi residents face a serious shortage in housing in coming years, Kenya Property Development Association (KPDA) Vice Chairman Muchai Kunyiha has warned. The sentiments were supported by real estate firm, Hass Consult Limited, who, in report, said developers face challenges, including increased construction permit fees from 0.006 per cent of the cost of construction to 1.25 per cent. High commercial bank lending rates have also makes them wary of setting up new projects. “The city is heading for an extreme

shortage in urban middle class housing and failed development goals based on current trends. The housing shortage in Nairobi is acute, and deteriorating,” he said. Hass said upmarket areas like Runda have 500 vacant lots due for development, while Kilimani has 12. Yet the majority of Kenyans are shying away from home loans. High interest rate for mortgages has made it difficult for millions of Kenyans to borrow from banks, with some lenders charging rates as high as 17 per cent for a loan.

“Lending rates need to be reduced for the long run and length of mortgages increased for more mortgage accounts,” said KPDA CEO Robyn Emerson. The county has experienced a booming development of high-end housing but expensive prices are putting off many home buyers. Nairobi has the highest property prices of any city in Africa, real estate company, Knight Frank, said. KPDA said there are 15,337 homes in the county that have been approved for construction but the rate at which new housing units are coming up is still too slow.

Mama Meals rides to the rescue of the famished Naisiadet Mason quit her job at the UN to start a food delivery service after identifying a gap in the Nairobi market. As the co-founder of Mama Meals on Wheels, she has seen her business grow from a referral-based enterprise to a restaurant with a distribution chain, a delivery service, four employees and a network of clients from across Nairobi. Through their website, mamamealsonwheels. com, Mason has created a

platform for customers to order freshly-cooked meals to be delivered to them. Orders are mainly done through phone calls, texts or online booking and meals are delivered by motorcycle riders. When an order is received, the customer is called to confirm it. Charges are based on the amount of food and zones mapped out with Westlands, Nairobi as the focal point for their fees. Orders within their location

cost Sh300 for food worth Sh2,000 and below. Mama Meals also delivers groceries and charges customers 20 per cent of their value. “I have always loved good food but I was amazed that I could not get some when I wanted it,” says Mason. When she realised that her problem was also affecting quite a number of city residents, she decided to find a solution. “I realised there was no one who could deliver food from

all the restaurants in Nairobi,” she recalls. “Only a few restaurant chains made deliveries but this was also limited to how close a customer is to their branches. I teamed up with a friend and we started Mama Meals on Wheels. We deliver groceries, booze and food from any restaurant of a customer’s choice.” Her service targets anyone without the time to go out for a hot meal or anybody who lives or works too far from

the nearest restaurant. “We take the restaurant to the customer,” says Mason, who also happens to be a public health consultant. The use of motorbikes enables her riders to manoeuvre through traffic jam and make deliveries within a span of 45 minutes. Mason hopes to expand the business to Mombasa and has been working on making it a franchise within the next two years. Service Team: Naisieadet mason (far left) with her mama meals on Wheels team.

Safaricom cautious about Yu acquisition Safaricom expects to make public its decision on acquisition of Yu Mobile in about three weeks, the company has said. According to financial research group, Africa Alliance, the company is especially unhappy with the Communications Authority of Kenya’s (CAK) condition to open up its M-Pesa agency network to rivals, Airtel and Telkom Kenya Orange, a move that could lower the cost of mobile money transfers for consumers but lower Safaricom’s profits in the process. “It will intensify competition and we may end up getting quality services in the process,” said Communications Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore has said the company is looking at the CAK conditions for the acquisition of Yu not to accept or reject them but for a possible avenue of going back to the transaction. Safaricom announced the asset purchase talks with yU’s parent company, Essar in early March and Airtel then confirmed it was interested in buying the licences and taking over Essar’s subscribers.

Drones pose risk to courier business

In December 2013, Amazon unveiled plans to deliver orders using unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones. These held the promise of making deliveries in less than 30 minutes but US lawmakers immediately raised concerns about the possible violation of privacy rights. Another concern is that use of drones to make deliveries would kill the courier and postal businesses. “The drones could actually lead to the fall of the courier busines because people will have the ability to easily deliver packages to different locations,” Mathew Andaye of the MCS courier service told XNews. Andaye is, however, convinced that the safety threats posed by hundreds of drones flying around would keep them being realistically used. “It would be disastrous if a

drone would develop complications mid-flight, while carrying a crate of beer,” said Andaye. There are also worries that the drones could become a public safety hazard and jeopardize

national security. Amazon later indicated that it would take a number of years before the drones were put into commercial use. However, a number of manufacturers are

already releasing drones into the market for consumer use and there is no telling what will become of the delivery industry once the use is approved by the relevant authorities.

Airbulb is lighting and audio rolled into one. With a smart phone as a controller, one can turn lights on and off, and listen to music at the touch of a button. The bulb is an invention of Avantconcept, a Hong Kong based company. It uses energy efficient LED bulb with a wireless speaker. The bulb can be controlled using iOS or Android devices. It has a 4.0 Bluetooth connectivity and does not require wires and adapters. This allows for wireless control of music and lighting. It works by the user first

downloading the AirBulb app for iOS and Android, then syncing the app with the bulb via Bluetooth. As much as the bulb allows the user to play music and to light up their homes, it also enables the user to sync alarms, incoming calls and social media notifications to it. When a notification comes in to the user’s phone, the light bulb flashes an alert. It can work with a device that is 10 metres away from it and has six LEDs which have 10 watts and give out the same light as a 65 watt bulb. It is environmentally friendly.

One night stands lead to lasting relationships are in love. Over 38 years ago, Elton John sang “Sorry seems to be the hardest word.” And he was so right. The three little words give people headaches because they find it hard to admit they were wrong. Yet one can begrudge someone for the smallest of things for more than a year. A bottle top caused a rift between two best friends, Phoebe Juma and Juliet Anyango. Phoebe lost Juliet’s water bottle top and refused to apologise, telling Juliet a bottle top is an insignificant thing to get mad about. But Juliet refused to let it go and said Phoebe was being disrespectful and careless. The two have not spoken for six years. By apologising, one admits to being wrong and

that you can make mistakes. But no one wants to own up. Yet someone once said by apologising it does not always mean one is wrong. It means they value the relationship more than their egos. Apology builds trust with the person who has been wronged, repairs the emotional damage caused and helps the two move past the anger. It makes it easier to forgive because there will be no grudges held between the two. People should consider other people’s feelings, especially those they care about and value. Had Phoebe apologised for losing Juliet’s bottle top, both could not have missed out on their friendship for the last six years.

Baseball coach Justine Martin is of the opinion that starters need to watch the game’s highlights. “Do this for a few days or so without thinking about finding a team. Just watch. Once you know the teams well enough, consider which was most appealing.” “Which highlights could you just not wait for? If you were watching a game, were you satisfied with the team that won, or would you have

rather had the other team win,” he ponders He says one should not pick a team just because they won the game /or continue to win and have a good season. Because if you do so, you are a front runner, and nobody likes a front runner. “Again, your hometown team should definitely be your first choice. But that doesn’t mean you can’t root for someone else. Doing so makes you unique and makes you stand out from the crowd.” He continues In conclusion, Martins says it is advisable to try to choose a team that you have seen play in person.

Celine Dion’s A New Day Has Come will rouse you When we are lonely, we yearn for love as we wait for the time we will meet our soulmates, to heal our emotional and physical feelings. When the wait becomes too long, our spirits dampen, weaken and we shed tears. Everything around us seem to be darkness and hopeless. Celin Dion, in her A new day Has Come track, likens finding our angel to a new dawn. The new day is loaded with hopes that cast away the darkness we have been going through. The day is new life that we

start together, a life of no cry, a life full of comfort. Our love’s overwhelming light shines upon our hearts like light from the stars in a dark night, clearing our ways. Dion compares the new love to good rain that washes and clears the tears and fears we experienced during the lonely moments while waiting for our soul mates’ magic touch. The love is healing. She says seeing the love flashing from our lover’s eyes bring joy to the pain that had sat in our hearts. The new day breathes new energy to the weakened heart during the long and anxious wait and we became happy again

Arsenal boss disturbed Wenger worried by ‘lack of fight’ after defeat P.15

Nakuru’s last gasp win thrills manager Nakuru RFC coach Dominique Habimana was a happy man after his side won a their seventh Enterprise Cup title at the expense of Kenya Commercial Bank at the RFUEA Ground on Saturday evening. Habimana’s side needed a last minute try by winger Javan Murayi to narrowly beat the bankers 18-13 for the title. The Kenya Cup champions, came into the final not having lost to KCB in the last three seasons. “We have a long history with KCB. We which we happen to understand their game very well. But winning the match at the very end made it even more interesting,” Habimana said. “We came to the match ready to keep our recent good run against them, we knew they were very well prepared for the match.” “The match was very tense, since we squandered several chances in the second half, but then again victory is what matters. We now turn our attention to the Kenya Cup finals.” The game was tied at 13-13 and there was a minute of play remaining when KCB gained advantage inside their half through a line-out.

Kahata on target again Kenyan International Francis Kahata scored as F.K Tirana edged KS Skenderbeu 3-2 in an entertaining Albanian top-tier league match played on Saturday. The former Thika United midfielder scored two goals for his club having netted his debut goal last week. His goal came in the 35th with teammate and Mario Morina and Burundian Yamin Selemani sealing victory for Tirana. A brace from Pero Pejic in the second half was not enough to earn Skenderbue a point on the day. Kahata signed a six month deal with the Albanian club at the start of the year. Tirana moved to eighth position with 34 points.

It was a critical moment for the Bankers after dominating Nakuru in the line outs for most of the game. KCB Winger Philip Wamae opted for quick play and Nakuru seized possession immediately with Murayi scoring the winner. It was Nakuru who drew first blood in the second minute as fly half Martin Muita gave them the lead by successfully converting a penalty. They failed to extend the lead as Muita missed a second penalty in the 10th minute. Fullback Jacob Ojee gave the Bankers a 5-3 lead inside the 15th minute by scoring a try, finishing off Allan Omuka’s ball. Flanker Nick Lang’o restored Nakuru’s lead to 8-5 five minutes later. At the half hour mark, KCB were 10-8 up courtesy of Essau Otieno’s unconverted try after powering past a crowd of Nakuru players. Despite the bankers having a two point’s advantage at half-time, Nakuru rallied to eventually win it in the second half. Nakuru will now prepare to defend their Kenya cup title next month.

Kamau rues missed chances in barren draw

FRUSTRATED: Kenya Under-23 team coach John Kamau

Kenya U-20 football coach John Kamau saw his side waste chances against Tanzania in the first leg of African Junior Championship qualifiers at Machakos Stadium on Sunday. The match ended in a barren draw. Kamau said the juniors failed to utilize their clear cut chances to beat the visitors in the match. Kenya had a disappointing first half but tidied up things in second period and should have won the having wasted three clear chances. “We had chances to win the match later in the match, after a sluggish start in the first period, we picked on well but still we could not win,” said Kamau. The coach said having to do wholesale changes to the team

days before the game had a negative impact in the day’s results. “Tactically we had we were challenged, having to work with new players less than a week to the qualifiers owing to the CAF age rules that saw over 10 players dropped from the team,” said Kamau. “We were disrupted a bit in terms of planning because I had players whom I knew will be of a lot of help to me but then I had to leave them out which means I made a few steps backward,” Kamau said. “Now we have a tough return leg away to Tanzania in a fortnight, the good positive is that we did not concede, we will have to take the match to them,” he said.

Hockey star Wanangwe looks to brighter future In 2011, at 21 years of age, Davies Wanangwe was named the best player during the 2011 Africa Club Hockey Championships in Lusaka, Zambia. He got the accolades while on duty with his previous club, the Strathmore University Gladiators. Three years later, he turns up for Premier League champions Nairobi Simba, a club he joined at the start of the 2012 season in what he says was a difficult decision to make. The fifth year civil engineering student at the University of Nairobi says studies forced him to move clubs after training schedules collided with class work. In his debut season with Simba, the forward helped his new club win a league title for the first time in 14 years. “My course is too demanding since I have to be in class the whole day. Strathmore conducts training sessions from 4pm and something had

to give. I looked for a more conducive club, and luckily Simba was very accommodative,” he says. Wanagwe attended Bungoma District Education Board Primary School from 1999 to 2003 before joining Kamusinga High in 2004 to 2007. Hockey only came second to football which was his father’s hobby. “I used to play football in my primary school days but I was not making the kind of progress I desired. Since recognition and talent development was not easy, I looked for a different sport and found my way to hockey. Rodgers Ayuya, a Greensharks player, influenced my decision when I joined Friends School Kamusinga,” he says. The forward accuses the government of not doing enough to develop the sport, unlike other sports which have federations that benefit from huge sums of funds.

From title contenders to unsure top four Arsenal FC’s permanent residency in the Champions League is under severe threat after a 3-0 defeat to top four rivals Everton on Sunday afternoon. win. The only time we looked like coming back into the game was in the second half, then we gave an easy goal away. “It will be difficult to finish in top four but first we have to focus on the quality of our performances. “I wouldn’t question the spirit of this team but we have lost something on the confidence front. We looked disjointed when we had to run after the score. The other big defeats away from home have taken some of the charisma from this team.” The North Londoners face Wigan Athletic in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley next Saturday, before resuming league commitments when they welcome West Ham United to the Emirates Stadium.

Revenge as Scorpions end Telkom’s unbeaten run Strathmore University over the weekend ended Telkom Orange’s unbeaten run , beating them a 1-0 win at the City Park Stadium. Gilly Okumu hit the back of the board in the third minute as the students held on for a rare victory against the 16-time national champions. Telkom had defeated the students 4-0 in the first leg but ran into met a totally different side on Saturday. The two rivals also met earlier this year in the finals of the Africa club championships in Kampala Uganda with Telkom winning 2-1.

A combination of hard luck and poor forward line coordination cost the defending champions many chances in front of goal. Jackie Joe, Carole Guchu, Audrey Omaido and Margaret Rotich all repeatedly wasted glorious chances as Strathmore remained more composed defensively to crack the unbeaten Telkom side. “The ladies played very well, I remember we ended Telkom’s unbeaten run of over two seasons last year. I can tell the ladies are improving,” said Strathmore Coach Mesharck Senge.
