UK medic blasts drugs firms over Ebola deaths A UK leading public health doctor says failure to find a vaccine against the Ebola virus is due to “moral bankruptcy of drugs companies to invest in the

disease because it has only affected black Africans. The disease has killed hundreds in West Africa. Prof John Ashton, the president of UK Faculty of Public Health,

says the West needs to treat the deadly virus as if it had swept through the wealthiest parts of London instead of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

Writing in UK newspaper Independent on Sunday, Prof Ashton compared the international response to Ebola to that of Aids. The latter was killing people

in Africa for years before treatments were developed after it spread to US and UK in 1980s.

Medic blames drugs firms over Ebola

From Page 1

“In both cases, Aids and Ebola, it seems the involvement of powerless minority groups has contributed to a tardiness of response and a failure to mobilise an adequately resourced international medical response,” he wrote. “In the case of Aids, it took years for proper research funding to be put in place and it was only when so-called ‘innocent’ groups were involved (women and children, haemophiliac patients and straight men) that the media, politicians, scientific community and funding bodies stood up and took notice.” The Ebola outbreak has so far

claimed at least 729 people across Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, according to figures by the World Health Organisation (WHO. There are fears that the number is likely to be far higher. Last week, WHO warned that the outbreak in West Africa was “moving faster than our efforts to control it.” The organisation’s Director General, Dr Margaret Chan, warned that if the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences would be “catastrophic” to human life. Prof Ashton believes more money must be channeled into research for treatment. “We must respond to this emergen-

cy as if it was in Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster. We must also tackle the scandal of the unwillingness of the pharmaceutical industry to invest in research on treatments and vaccines, something they refuse to do because the numbers involved are, in their terms, so small and don’t justify the investment. This is the moral bankruptcy of capitalism acting in the absence of a moral and social framework.” Western countries are on high alert after Patrick Sawyer, a civil servant for the Liberian government, died last week on arrival at Lagos airport – the first known case in Nigeria. International airline hubs are the fo-

cus of attention because of the high volumes of daily passengers flying into and out of West Africa. Dubai’s Emirates airline on Sunday banned flights to Guinea over the crisis until further notice. Development of a vaccine is in the early stages in US, but this is on a minor scale. There is little hope of one being ready to treat the current outbreak in West Africa. Dr Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, an agency of US Department of Health and Human Services, says it plans to start testing an Ebola vaccine on people in mid-September after pre-clinical trials on monkeys.

Earlier this month, the US Food and Drug Administration put a hold on trials on healthy volunteers by Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation to ensure their potential Ebola treatment has no ill-effects as it sought more information to ensure the safety of volunteers. “The real spotlight needs to be on the poverty and environmental squalor in which epidemics thrive and the failure of political leadership and public health systems to respond effectively. The international community has to be shamed into real commitment... if the root causes of diseases like Ebola are to be addressed,” Prof Ashton said.

fishy PROBLEM: Fishermen on the shores of Lake Victoria prepare a Nile Perch catch for the market. Overfishing is threatening to wipe out the species from the water mass.

Fishermen may wipe out Nile Perch stocks from Lake Victoria

The Nile perch may be wiped out of Lake Victoria in a few years if the situation is authorities do not control over-fishing. Overfishing is one of the major contributors to the long-term fall in the total Nile perch volumes harvested from the lake waters. A study by Smart Fish Programme shows that the Nile perch may be extinct in three to five years. The Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO) has instructed that the legal size of Nile perch to be harvested be between 50–85 cm total length.

This was agreed on and legislated by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2000. But there has been no implementation or compliance by the countries until the industry decided to lead the process. Experts of the European Union (EU)-funded SmartFish Programme are worried over the increasing number of unregulated fishermen and use of illegal gear in Lake Victoria as primary contributing factors to the crisis. China and India are said to be the source of the illegal fishing nets.

Data from Eurostat shows that in 2013, EU imported 26,100 tons of Nile perch fillets mainly from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Tanzania was the main exporter of Nile perch fillets to EU, selling 12,400 tonnes (47.5% market share), followed by Uganda with 10,800 tonnes (41%) and Kenya 2,900 tonnes (11%). By April, 2014 there were 27 processing plants authorised for exports of Nile perch, 14 in Uganda, nine in Tanzania and four in Kenya.

Keita received a 86 per cent rating as Khama rated at 81 per cent. “Presidents from more than half of the 26 sub-Sahara African countries surveyed in 2013 – many of whom are attending the US-Africa Leaders Summit this week – received job approval ratings higher than 50pc. But those ratings varied greatly across countries” the poll noted.

The lowest job approval rating was 24 per cent for Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila. Biya was ranked fourth at 70 per cent with Museveni at position nine

with 62 per cent. “Several other highly rated presidents, such as Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali, had either just been elected to a first term or started on their second term at the time of the survey,” the pollsters noted. Githurai mob lynches two robbers

Two suspected thugs have this morning been lynched in Githurai, Nairobi. Police say the two had tried to rob pedestrians, who raised an alarm attracting a mob that beat up the two and proceeded to set them on fire. The bodies were later taken to the mortuary. Members of the public, frustrated by the quick release of arrested thugs, often resort to lynching. Police have, however, warned against it.

The deceased died of stab wounds after a disagreement whose cause remains unclear. Police say they were called and informed of the death and injury before they took the body to the mortuary and the injured to hospital while investigating the incident.

Kenyans experience an average of seven blackouts every month Kenyans endure an average of seven power blackouts every month. According to a World Bank report, the lack of reliable electricity has been a major constraint for more than 25 per cent of Kenyan businesses and a bane for many Kenyan households. However, ongoing improvements to the country’s national power grid may reduce the frequency of outages while connecting the current 32 million Kenyans who have no access to electricity. Kenya Power Managing Director Dr Ben Chumo says a Sh1 billion initiative launched in April will help reduce the number of blackouts in parts of the country. The move, dubbed ‘Boresha Umeme Viwandani’, has already

proven to be an effective strategy in the fight against blackouts. “The call centre has recorded reduced number of complaints and power failure incidences since commencement of the project,” Dr Chumo said. By 2016, the government is looking at doubling the country’s generation capacity to 5,000 Mega Watts and one of the ways it hopes to attain that goal is by exploiting the Rift Valley’s geothermal power resources. “Already Sh900 million has been used and we will be moving to Homabay in the coming weekend, after which we will go to Eldoret, Nakuru and Nyeri and finally Kisii,” said Dr Chumo.

Road accidents have reduced by 13 per cent over the last one year. Transport Cabinet Secretary, Michael Kamau yesterday disclosed that a total of 1,616 fatalities were reported on Kenyan roads by July this year as compared to 1,856 fatalities the same period last year. Serious injuries on accidents have also reduced by 30 per cent during the same period.

Engineer Kamau expressed confidence that road accidents would be reduced further attributing the reductions to stringent enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. “We had a target of reducing serious injuries in accident especially in public service vehicles to 50 per cent but the 30 per cent is also a remarkable reduction but we intend to see fatal and serious injuries reduced even

State rule on tenders to be law

President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday left for Washington DC where he will attend the US-Africa Summit that begins today. Uhuru, who is visiting the US for the first time since he was elected, said the visit will focus on strengthening ties between the US and Kenya in trade, capital investment, infrastructure, energy and security. He will address the Corporate Council on Africa which represents multinationals like General Electric Ltd, Coca Cola and IBM.

further,” Kamau said. He said drunk driving was one of the biggest threats to road safety. “We are so much after that driver who doesn’t care about the lives of other Kenyans.” The Government last December adopted measures to curb road accidents after road deaths put Kenya among the countries with the highest figures of road accidents.

THEIR WORD IS LAW: Parliament has passed a bill to make the 30 per cent State tender rule into law.

The government’s directive that 30 per cent of state tenders be reserved for the youth, women and those with disabilities could soon become law after MPs passed a Bill to enforce it. The National Assembly unanimously passed the Bill which was sponsored by nominated MP, Johnson Sakaja before the Senate also approved it last week. Senate majority leader, Kindiki Kithure moved the Bill and the members argued that it was timely as it seeks to empower the marginalized groups. The Jubilee administration promised to reserve up to 30 per cent of all state tenders to the youth and women in what the government said is one way of creating jobs for the group. “This will liberate many youths from the shackles of brokers and change their lives for the better,” Senate minority leader, Moses Wetangula said while supporting the Bill. Prof Kindiki said that both the Senate and the National Assembly had also ensured that government departments will report their progress on implementation of the requirement to the Independent Procurement and Oversight Authority from where quarterly reports will be retrieved. The government agencies will also be directed only to make payments of such companies only after confirming that the mandatory signatory of a firm that wins such contracts is either a youth, woman or disabled person. The Bill now awaits President Uhuru Kenyatta’s assent to become law.

What the law says on monogamous, polygamous marriages The Marriage Act, 2014 was assented in to Law on April 29, 2014 and commenced on May 20, 2014. There has been a lot misinformation on what exactly the law says on polygamy. We will shed light on whom and when one can enter into a polygamous marriage according to the provisions of the new Marriage Bill, 2014. First, under Section 3 of the Marriage Bill, 2014 marriage is defined as ‘…… the voluntary union of a man and a woman whether in a monogamous or polygamous union……’.It is important to note that parties to a

marriage must enter into that union voluntary and anything to the contrary is therefore not a lawfully union. It is important at this point to understand the meaning of both the Polygamous marriage and the monogamous marriage. Section 2 of the Marriage Bill, 2014 defines Monogamous marriage to mean ‘….. a marriage whose character has been converted to a monogamous marriage ……. including an originally polygamous or potentially polygamous marriage’ This means that a potentially polygamous marriage may be

converted into monogamous marriage if each spouse voluntarily declares the intent to make such a conversion. However, a Polygamous marriage where polygamy is defined as … the state or practice of a man having more than one wife simultaneously may not be converted to a monogamous marriage unless at time of conversion the husband has only one wife. Both polygamous and monogamous marriages may be registered under the Marriage Bill, 2014 BUT it is only a marriage celebrated under the

381 killed, 1,881 injured in China earthquake Search and rescue operations are underway in Yunnan province, southwestern China today following a 6.1-magnitude quake, which struck on Sunday afternoon. At least 381 people have been killed, and 1,881 injured, state-run media reported today. Three people have been reported missing. The quake struck at 4.30 p.m. local time with the majority of the casualties occurring in the city of Zhaotong,

Ludian County. The epicentre of the quake was recorded in Longtoushan Township, 23 km southwest of Zhaotong, and tremors were felt almost 300 kilometres away. Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded following the initial tremor. It is a fairly remote, partly mountainous area, where many live in low-rise houses made of wood and bricks or plaster, which make them prone to collapse. The affected area has around

400,000 residents, making it sparsely populated by Chinese standards. Some 12,000 homes were destroyed and 30,000 others were damaged in Sunday’s quake, according to CCTV. Tens of thousands have been relocated from structurally unsafe houses. Some roads have been destroyed and some villages remain cut off. Ten towns and townships faced power outages overnight. Power was restored to around 19,000 homes Monday

morning. President Xi Jinping called for “all-out efforts” in relief operations late Sunday night, with top priority given to saving lives, minimizing casualties and providing adequate shelter for displaced victims of the disaster. More than 2,500 troops, both active duty soldiers and reservists, have been dispatched to the area to join the disaster relief operation.

globalview Ostrich farm conman arrested Fugitive conman, drug dealer and money launderer Martin Evans has been arrested by armed police in South Africa after three years on the run. Evans, 52, from Swansea who was jailed for 21 years in 2006 for conspiracy to supply cocaine and fraudulent trading - was arrested in Johannesburg on Saturday. His scams included swindling 87 investors out of £900,000 (Sh133million) in an ostrich farm fraud in south Wales. He will appear in court on Monday. Evans began his career as a successful award-winning businessman running a double-glazing firm in Pot Talbot. However, after the business collapsed, he turned to crime. His first offence came in 1995, when he was involved in a scam that saw him con businessmen into investing in a fake ostrich farm, earning him millions. He was caught, but after being summoned to court he skipped bail and went on the run staying in Spain and then Holland.

Medics warn of health risks in packaged fruit juices Experts have warned Kenyans to avoid packaged fruits juices as they can cause irreversible damage to the body. According to Dr Ruth Khisa an endocrinologist at Kenyatta National Hospital, the fruit juices lose most nutrients during processing while some fresh juice containers are deceptively labeled. “Though manufacturers indicate in their packaged juices that they contain no added sugars, numerous tests done on the juices indicate otherwise,” Khisa said. She says these sugars cause insulin resistance and contain calories with no essential nutrients. The experts have also said that most commercial fruit juices have large amounts of methanol, which is wood alcohol, and a metabolic poison. “The longer the fruit juice is in the container, or the more heat it is exposed to, the more methanol is released into the juice.” Khisa added. A study conducted where over the course of 10 weeks, 16 volunteers on a controlled diet including high levels of fructose produced new fat cells around their heart, liver, and other digestive organs. They also showed signs of food-processing abnormalities linked to diabetes and heart disease. Another group of volunteers on the same diet, but with glucose sugar replacing fructose, did not have these problems.

July more expensive than June MONday, AUGUST 4, 2014

The latest data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that the overall cost of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels went up by 0.57 per cent last month (July) as compared to June 2014. The jump in prices, say KNBS officials, was due to an increase in

the cost of of kerosene, charcoal, electricity and rent. Razia Khan, Head of African research at Standard Chartered Plc in London told Bloomberg that there is a “a good chance” that inflation will exceed 8 percent by the end of this year. Inflation is the rate at which

the general price for goods and services is rising, and, as a result, the rate at which the purchasing power of consumers is falling. Khan says inflation in Kenya jumped to 7.7 per cent in July from 7.4 per cent in June, a trend that may see the cost of goods and services continue to rise.

The cost of electricity went up due to a revision of power tariffs, making power charges go up by seven per cent in July. Transport costs also went up due to higher petrol prices and public transport costs. Meanwhile, the cost of alcoholic drinks, tobacco and narcotics fell

by 0.35 per cent. This was mainly due to the continued fall in the prices of Khat (Miraa). A kgs of tomatoes went up by 4 per cent to Sh97. 43 from Sh93.80 in June while a kilogram of cabbages rose by 2 per cent to Sh55.48 packet of from Sh54.46 in June.

Grafting boosts Murang’a avocado farmers’ yields Farmers in Thika have found a way to increase their yields by as much as 35 per cent through grafting. “We used to have erratic harvesting patterns due to pests interfering with our plants,” says Mwangi Ndege, chairman of the Mbari ya Mboche farmers group, a small organisation that has

adopted the trend. “Our records now show that for the 24 months we have embraced grafting, we have never had erratic harvesting cycles and we have recorded over 35 per cent increase in our harvests sold to exporters.” More than four fifths of the avocado trees in Kenya are of the Fuerte variety, which is

relatively low in oil content but is known for its superiority in disease resistance. Farmers are now learning how to graft it with the oil rich Hass variety which is in high demand globally. This guarantees an interrupted supply of the fruit. With only a sharp razor blade, farmers are now

growing two sets of plants in seed beds, the variety that they want for the fruit, and a special rootstock variety that grows strongly and is resistant to diseases and pests. “You have to use clean tools like the razor blade or the knife and they need to be sharp,” warns Steve Karanja a scientist at the Kenya Ag-

Adidas shares fall after plan for fewer shops in Russia Adidas shares have fallen after revealing they will open fewer stores in Russia than they had initially planned. The sportswear maker saw its shares dropped 16 per cent on Thursday. They blamed the drop on uncertainty in the consumer market in Russia and the heavy spending during the World Cup. The German sport equipment maker were the sponsors of World Cup winners, Germany. It had been widely expected that this would

trigger them into a major profit. They also issued a profit warning by saying their net income for 2014 would be around 650m euros (Sh76.2 billion) compared with the 930m (Sh109.5 billion) previously targeted, a third lower of that. Adidas runs 1,000 stores in Russia. Since the start of the Ukraine crisis, the value of the company’s products have fallen, forcing the company to close down some and open fewer new ones.

In 2013, East African Breweries sourced 10,000 tons of sorghum from 60,000 farmers in Kenya. There is also a growing demand for sorghum among households and relief organizations that has made its cultivation an economically viable use of land in places where there is minimal rainfall.

Change your Mentality I urge the youth to break the white collar job mentality bondage. Times have changed and jobs are scarce or hardly none at all. I’m not opposed to higher learning but I suppose that instead of using all resources securing academic papers, use the available meagre resources to start a meaningful venture. The businesses can create jobs for you and others. Times and seasons have changed and ahead of us lies a bumpy road to employment. We must change with the times. Sometimes you hear them say that “Education is the key to life”, but today let us reaffirm that “investment is the key to success”. —Lameck O, Kisii

They deliberately chose to move out to the country because they wanted a quiet life, away from the city as they tried to salvage their relationship. Gus had an affair with Bill, the father of one of her art students. This did a lot of damage to the relationship. Alison Hemmings, another painter, moves in next door. The lives of Gus and Owen are

WEDDINGS

thecloset

MONDAY, AUGUST 4, 2014

Insure your memories with great snapshots The photos of your wedding will last forever and poorly-take shot can ruin the memory of a great moment. Therefore, finding a great photographer with a wonderful portfolio is key. Here are a few of the celebrated wedding photographers you can sample. Emmanuel Jambo Jambo is a South Sudanese photographer based in Kenya, whose work has made a mark. His love for photography started at an early age. He studied Computer Information Systems in college and started taking photography serious at the age of 28. He loves shooting weddings, portraits and fashion. Many who have seen his work and worked with him have described him as a brilliant photographer.

Mutua Matheka Matheka is popularly known for his landscape photographs of Nairobi. What people do not generally know is that he shoots weddings also and he is great at that too. An architect graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology, he quit his job to pursue his love for photography. His photos portray a radiant beauty from it and makes people look at things from a different perspective. Ben Kiruthi and Gathoni The wife and husband duo describe themselves as international and destination wedding photographers. Ben, is a graduate from JKUAT and is a trained electronics and Computer Engineer.

Make lingerie an everyday thing Women should have as much fun with their inner wear as they do with their outerwear. There is no point in spending so much time getting dressed, applying makeup, making sure that the minute you step out, everyone wants to get a second look if you are not putting the right foundation underneath it. Lingerie should not be just for that special occasion only, wear sexy lingerie underneath every day or start off with wearing it twice or thrice a week and it will give you a boost of confidence. And before you know it, you are wearing them every day.

AMONG THE BEST: Emmamuel Jambo (inset) is one of the most soughtafter event photographers.

giftcentral

Bridal registry concept catches on Bridal registries are the latest inclusion in the radical changes that have come to the wedding scene. Couples can now dictate which gifts they prefer. It all smacks of presumptuousness but that is how it is. Although choosing a wedding gift can be quite a chore for the guests, it is usually satsifying to know that you gave a gift that no other guest will did. A bridal registry prevents a situation where the newlyweds receive tonnes of water tumblers glasses, plates,

cooking pots and mugs. To set up the registry, the bride and groom file a list of their desired gifts with a particular supermarket, which in turn makes it available to guests. When a listed item is purchased, the registry is updated, thus blocking the next shopper from buying a similar gift. This may seem arrogant and eliminates the element of surprise in gift giving. But it saves time for both the giver and the couple, and the newly-weds.

onlocation

Choosing the right decor is key for a memorable wedding The decor of the wedding venue is as important as the day itself. It is one of the elements that will keep people talking about a wedding for days to come. Here are few pointers to help get the decore of your venue right. Colourful flowers and floral arrangements lighten up the atmosphere of any wedding. Fresh flowers do not come cheap and if you want to use them you have to be prepared to pay more. Alternatively you could use artificial

flowers or origami flowers to reduce the price. Do not go for over the top decorations if you cannot afford it. Consider your budget then work around it. The other thing is the theme. If you have a theme, every element of your dĂŠcor must accentuate it. The colours and flowers should blend in perfectly to bring out your theme and the different accents should not clash and create different ideas in your wedding. The location of the wedding is also as important. One

has to consider where the wedding will be either inside or outside. For example, a beach wedding needs different types of flowers than an indoor or garden wedding. Also remember that venues differ from one to another and some have aspects that can work to your advantage. Do not, however, handle everything on your own, get help from experts. You or your partner need to concentrate on your day and not worry about the setup.

The impact of online revolution in dating It appears like dating these days has gone through a revolution. It is a different ball game from the olden days when parents would dictate who their child is going to marry. There are many options available to singles in regard to dating in the digital age. Online platforms are fast becoming choice places of meeting. Statistics indicate that 12 per cent of relationships that are initiated online work, while the remaining 88 per cent do not. Experiences with online dating tend to be mixed. Some people have excellent experiences and can sing from the rooftops on their success. While others have

stories filled with frustration, and would rather not have anybody know they tried online dating. Online dating provides people with access to a large pool of individuals who could be potential partners. It also makes it easier to locate and meet someone compared with meeting people offline. ‘’It is easier to meet people online than in Churches and bars,’’ says Mathew Kinoti. ‘’Meeting people offline is hard and sometimes you do not have the time for it,’’ says Kinoti. Meeting people online gives one an opportunity to know a person gradually. You are never in a rush and can therefore avoid butterflies in the stomach.

touchspot The right time to move in together

In most cases, dating online is inexpensive especially if both parties are worlds apart. You could email, skype call or use other internet tools to communicate. But Internet dating is not all bliss; it comes with its fair share risks. People lie on age, relationship status, where they

are located and many more. So one may never know how the other person looks like or their personality by exchanging a few emails. ‘’I do not trust online dating because people are always lying, and the person might be a stalker or even worse a rapist,’’ says Crystal Muthoni.

CHANGER POINT: Online dating provides people with access to a large pool of individuals who could be potential partners.

sexstats

Survey reveals many spouses don’t trust partners They say trust is the most important component in a relationship. It is seen as the bedrock of the love ties. Without it, the relationship has no meaning. As much as trust is crucial, statistics show that most people do not trust partners. A survey of 2,000 people

gogirl

conducted by Match.com, an online dating website, found out that one in seven people do not trust their current partner or spouse. Out of the figure, 73 per cent said they have had to make do with current partners until they found someone better. Another 17 per cent said

they had cheated on current partner at least once since became a couple. Surprisingly, men were found to be more loyal to partners than women. The survey report 37 per cent of the man said they had never cheated on the partner, while 42 per cent of women said

they had cheated. About 51 per cent of the polled said they had broken up with a former partner because they did not trust them and felt they would cheat on them. Of the 51 per cent, only eight said they had undeniable proof that their partner had cheated on them.

Every person and couple is unique. The circumstances that lead to a lasting relationship may be poison to another. Many people have different opinions on when couples should move in. ‘’I would ask my girlfriend to move in after we have been dating for one year,’’ says Dan Kimani. ‘’If she refuses I would give her another six months to change her mind,’’ says Dan. But Katherine Akinyi thinks the only time she will move in is if she is married to the man. “I will not move in unless he puts a ring on it. I need to live alone for a while,’’ says Katherine. ‘’Having my space is paramount so I need to enjoy it while it lasts,’’ she adds. David Momanyi says all depends on how long the two have known each other and the long- term plans for the relationship. ‘’It depends on a lot of factors, if for example we have known each other for a long time and if I intend on marrying her,’’ says Momanyi. Sharon Mwadime says it will take a considerable amount of time before she can move in with the boyfriend. ‘’I would move in with him after we have seen each other for a minimum of three years,’’ says Mwadime.

Lavinah loving time on stage At first sight, one gets the feeling that she is harsh. But Lavinah Wanjiku, an actress from Mtwapa, is amiable and down to earth. Perhaps it’s her quiet persona that drives people to think that she is unproachable. Wanjiku has been in the showbiz industry for a year under the tutelage of Hassan Faisal Ali of Coastal Films Productions. She can’t help but pour out the heartfelt joy she derives from her acting career. “I have great undying passion for the stage,” she said. “It’s my

dream.” Since she started acting, the 23-year-old admits that her life has undergone a positive transformation. “Acting has given me new expectations and modelled me into a different person,” she told X News. She marvels at her ability to switch roles while on and off the stage. While acting her best moment is when the Director yells “cut” after a fruitful shooting. Wanjiku draws inspiration from fellow actors Augustino Muya popularly known as Tino from

Tanzania and Ramsey Nouah, from Nigeria, whom she hopes to share the screen with in the near future. According to Lavinah, challenges are present in every step of life but with sacrifice, perseverance and dedication in mind, one should sail through. Although her career has just commenced, Lavinah is working on being a household name on both local and international platforms. “I want to be acknowledged and looked up to not just countrywide but across the borders,” she says.

GREAT IMPACT: Wanjiku says acting has influenced her life in a positive way.

She was then nominated for two Channel O Awards the same year. She has collaborated with popular musicians such as Wyre, M.I and Diamond. But the female musician is not all music, she is also a fashion icon, with a great sense of style. She is often tying new looks from the girly look to the tomboy look which she manages to pull off sophisticatedly. Her most daring look though was when she got a purple weave. The weave was believed to be from celebrity makeup artiste, Edee Beau, and it goes for about $1,500 (at least 130,000). The brave Shnew look was met with mixed reviews. But she did not stop there the musician currently has a blue weave on and yes she is rocking it.

Respect in a relationship is not weakness Respect from a partner in a relationship does not mean they are weak and cannot defend themselves or are rebellious. Those who show their partners respect expect it to be reciprocated. Katy Perry in her song, Roar, says she persevered and kept quiet to her love’s oppression for fear that their relationship might hit a dead end. She never opposed anything the man said.

She was pushed to the extremes. She never complained, but agreed to everything in the hope of him changing. Her humility, she says, “was wrestled to the ground”...and that she has “risen from the dust a different person”. Perry is calling on her former partner to listen to her roar of freedom. She says her roar “is like that of the thunderstorm, louder than that of a lion”.

She is no longer under him, but a champion. “A fighting face as that of a tiger; no anger from him can deter and deny her the freedom she is enjoying.” The freedom she enjoys “is like that of a butterfly. She can sting like a bee to defend her freedom”. Her rise is that from nothing to something. No more oppression.

‘I love my body. I picked up a groin injury during the warm up and almost pulled out of the competition’

Yego shrugs off injury to clinch javelin gold Julius Yego became the first Kenyan to win javelin gold at the Commonwealth Games, despite having injured himself during warm-up. With Kenya better known for success in distance running events, the 25-year-old proved Kenyan victories are not restricted to just the track or road as he threw a best of 83.87m on Saturday night to beat Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad & Tobago and become the first from Kenya to win athletics gold in a non-running event at the Commonwealth Games. “This is a dream come true for me,” offered Yego with his usual slight chuckle,” said Yego who scrapped through with a throw of 83.87m on his third attempt to top the field of 12. “I love my body. I picked up a groin injury during the warm up and almost pulled out of the competition because it was really painful but I decided to carry on,” said the reigning All Africa games and Africa champion whose rise to the top of the men’s javelin throw is almost like a fairy tale. Yego, fourth at the world

championships last year honed his skills relying on watching competition and training videos on YouTube before landing a wellearned stint at the IAAF-accredited centre in Kuortane, Finland last year. His start on Saturday was undeniably difficult. For a man who had qualified with his initial throw of 82.83, the79.28 was a good effort and put him on position for the bronze but was discouraged by the 77.66 he speared in the following round. “I was feeling I could do better than this at that moment. The conditions were hard for all of us. So I just decided to go hard and be safe for the medal,” added the policeman of his last stab. He cracked the winner just before a torrential downpour which forced the organizers to hastily sweep off paddles and squeeze the water off the track, with Keshorn Walcott’s first stab of 82.13 earning him the silver as Australian’s Hamish Peacock’s settled for bronze interestingly also from his opening round throw of 79.34.

Kenya beat Aussies but bow out of Grand Prix The Kenya women volleyball team on Sunday concluded their World Grand Prix debut appearance with a thrilling 3-2 win over Australia in an exciting encounter played at the Zatika Hall in Porec Croatia. Kenya prevailed 3-2 (25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-11) in their third match at the championships from the six matches played. Despite the win over Australia, Kenya failed to qualify to the next

round of the competition to be played in Bulgaria with Kazakhstan snatching the 4th spot in the Pool courtesy of a superior set ratio to Kenya. Kenya and Kazakhstan tied on nine points, having won three matches each. “I have noticed signs of fatigue within the squad. I am glad we conjured up some energy from somewhere to win our final game on Sunday. Otherwise credit to

the girls for working so hard and matching a big time in some moments,” Kenya coach David Lung’aho said after the match. Only the top four sides, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia and Kazakhstan in that order secured qualification to the money-spinning stage of the competition. Kenya, Mexico, Australia and Algeria finished in the remaining positions.

Bolt says his focus is now on the 200m Multiple world and Olympic champion Usain Bolt says he will make the 200m his focus after the Commonwealth Games. The 27-year-old 100m and 200m world record holder only competed in the 4x100m relay at Glasgow 2014, helping Jamaica to gold at Hampden Park. “I’ve said I want to run sub 19 for 200m - that’s one of my biggest goals and my biggest dreams” “I think I’ve done enough in the 100,” said. “I know people want to see me run fast in the 100 but I love my 200 and I want to do something special for myself. So for me, my main aim is the 200.” Bolt, who will turn 28 on 21 August, set the 200m world record of 19.19 seconds in Berlin five years ago. The Jamaican also posted a 100m world best of 9.58 at the same World Championships. “The world record can keep going down. You never know who’s going to show up next and dominate,” he added. Bolt, who missed the closing ceremony late last night , said the older he gets the harder it is to stay at full fitness. The eight-time world champion’s next race is a 100m on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on 14 August. “You can feel a difference sometimes especially after a workout. I have to take more ice baths now which is not so much fun.” The Manchester United fan said he hoped that when he hung up his running spikes he might be able to work his way into Louis van Gaal’s team. “Hopefully when I retire I can talk to him and get a spot in the team. Van Gaal means business - he’s solid and I’m happy. Manchester United are back.”

Alexis, who joined the north Londoners from Barcelona, is keen to settle as soon as possible and believes his game time over the weekend will prove hugely beneficial. “I have to go step by step; I have only trained twice with the team,”

he said after the Monaco match. “Today I played 70 minutes - I believe I needed it - and I just have to keep on working hard and training. “I like this style of football. Tana trounced Changamwe Youth 9-8 in post-match penalties at Mombasa Municipal Stadium. Delvan Laban’s side qualified for the finals after dispatching South Coast outfit Mvita Youth 3-0 in semis. Ignos Assa opened the scoring for

Tana five minutes into the game with Hillary Kessy’s second half brace assuring them of a slot in the finals. Changamwe’s overwhelmed defending champions Malindi United who were anything but gracious in a 2-1 semifinal defeat. Said Nassir grabbed a brace for Changamwe who overpowered the defending champions at the semifinals stage.

The results ensured Changamwe and Tana, the two most enterprising and entertaining sides, clashed in the final. Changamwe took the lead with 10 minutes on the clock only for Tana to equalise almost immediately through an Omar Bakari free kick. The same script was repeated after the breather. Tana took the lead through Ignos Assa but Changamwe made it 2-2 before full time.

Arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester United don’t agree on much, but both camps insist their Monday meeting in the final of the International Champions Cup is not ‘just a friendly’. The English football’s bitterest arch-rivals meet in Miami tonight and both know there will be more than some preseason bauble at stake United midfielder Darren Fletcher admits his teammates are desperate for revenge on their old foes, who did a Premier League double over them last season - including a 3-0 humiliation at Old Trafford. They are out to prove they are on the way back with new boss Louis van Gaal after finishing seventh. “It’s Manchester United v Liverpool,” said the midfielder. “I know it’s only pre-season and it’s just a summer competition, but when United play Liverpool, it’s always a big deal. “We want to win every match, and it’s no different when we play Liverpool.” The Old Trafford giants face their arch-rivals at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium in the first fight for silverware of an exciting Premier League season - the climax of a competition that has been played out to impressively full stadiums across the US and Canada. And the Kopites’ manager

Brendan Rodgers reckons it’s the dream final... because it is the biggest club-level fixture in the world. “Liverpool against Manchester United is about more than football, it’s about two cities which aren’t far apart, and who have historically always been rivals,” said Rodgers. “It is arguably the biggest game in the world and for it to be here in the US, it’s great viewing for them and magnificent news for the organisers. “The most important thing is obviously about getting the players fit for the start of the season, but even winning in pre-season creates that belief and mentality, and so it’s very important.” It is just a friendly, of course, but forget the silverware at stake that would offer both managers an encouraging start to the season. It is the local rivalry that makes Rodgers suggest there is no such thing as a friendly in this fixture: “They are certainly the two biggest clubs in Britain and two of the biggest in the whole world. I don’t think any of these games are friendlies.” The winners of Monday’s match will bank sh85million but more significantly will put down a major psychological marker ahead of the new Premier League campaign, which starts a week on Saturday.

Briggs eats out of Klitschko’s bowl When boxer Shannon Briggs barged in on Wladimir Klitschko’s meal, it ended in humiliating fashion - with a glass of water over the head. Klitschko, 38, was tucking in to a bowl of food at an Italian restaurant in Miami, Florida when Briggs, who hopes to take on the Ukrainian in a title fight, arrived uninvited. Ukraine’s Klitschko, a current heavyweight champion, was eating at Mamma Mia’s Italian restaurant in Hollywood, Fla., when former twotime champion Briggs approached him. The bizarre face-off was caught on video. “Everywhere you go, I go, champ,” Briggs yelled. “What you do, I do, champ.” To prove his point, Brigg’s grabbed the Ukrainian boxer’s plate and dug in to his meal.

What you eat, I eat, champ,” he said. Klitschko remained cool, and even offered his spontaneous dinner guest a drink of water to go with his food. He poured a bottle of water into a glass. Then, he dumped it on Brigg’s head. Briggs smacked the food off of Klitschko’s table, sending plates flying across the restaurant. A furious Briggs knocked over the table before two other men grabbed him and wrestled him to the ground. Briggs stormed out of the restaurant, leaving behind a trail of broken glass, thrown food and overturned chairs. He even had to go to the hospital after he cut his leg and foot on some of the glass. In a strange April confrontation, Briggs broke into a Klitschko press conference and demanded to fight the heavyweight.

FKF fires coaches as Stars fall to Lesotho Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has disbanded the entire Harambee Stars squad and technical bench with immediate effect after they failed to qualify for 2015 African Cup of Nations final group stage qualifiers yesterday. The coaches were sent packing on Sunday moments after the team failed to overturn a onegoal deficit against Lesotho in a preliminary round qualifying match for next year’s premier continental tournament. Stars were bundled out in the pre-qualifiers by Lesotho who won 1-0 on aggregate after

settling for a goalless draw in the second round return leg in Nairobi. FKF president Sam Nyamweya said the technical bench failed to deliver despite being given ‘all the necessary support’ and another national team would be formed soon. “We have given the technical bench everything they requested for including bringing foreign based players which is a very expensive exercise since we spent over Sh6.5m in tickets. “They have let Kenyans down and the consequence is that

bernard makumbi @benar_1 #harambeestars we just need a whole new team I think AFC or Gor could have done better than the stars against Lesotho. selestus mayira @smayira #HarambeeStars we share the problem with former colonial master England,

we have fired the entire technical bench and disbanded the national team. As a federation we will put emphasis on youth and ensure we play many friendlies,” Nyamweya said. “Preparations were good because we paid all their allowances and facilitated whenever they wanted to be in camp, so it’s unfortunate we lost but I blame the technical bench for the loss.” Commenting on the appeal they launched against sacked head coach Adel Amrouche, who was slapped with a oneyear ban by CAF for allegedly

spitting on a match official in Comoros, Nyamweya said it’s upon the Belgian to follow it up. “It’s not our appeal, the appeal is for the coach, it’s upon him to proceed with it if he want which I’m sure is following up on it. It’s not the federation that is penalized it’s an individual. “Our duty was to facilitate by giving him part of his salary because it’s an expensive exercise. We have been in solidarity with him in this difficult time,” Nyamweya said.
