Uhuru assures on security
The government is working hard to address the challenge of insecurity and terrorism, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said. In a speech delivered to
commemorate one year since he was sworn into office, Mr Kenyatta says crime and terrorism are some of the serious challenges his government is working hard
to tackle. “Kenyans are still oppressed by poverty, crime and terrorism. These are serious challenges the government is working hard to tackle,” he said. Mr Kenyatta’s first year in office
has been dogged by serious security challenges, including last year’s Westgate massacre which saw terrorists storm the mall and kill more than 67 civilians.

There have also been recent terror attacks in Mombasa and other parts of Nairobi as terrorists appear to have re-ignited their attacks on Kenya. The country has also experienced inter-communal conflicts in
Marsabit and cattle rustling in Samburu and Turkana. But the government has responded by beefing up security after some 3 000 troops passed out and were immediately deployed to volatile areas. An operation dubbed Usalawatch has also been launched in Nairobi’s
Eastleigh area which is thought to be hosting some dangerous terror suspects and more than 4000 people arrested. President Kenyatta blamed decades of underinvestment, leakages and lack of proper coordination among government agencies as some of the
factors that have contributed the security problems. “I have taken steps to drive a transformation agenda in the security sector based on ensuring that the foundations are in place for lasting and impactful change,” he said. “We are taking unprecedented steps
to deal with terrorists who falsely use religious justification for their murder and torture of innocent lives,” he added. On the economy, the president said inflation has fallen in recent months and that the government is concerned about the high cost of living for Kenyans.

Testing to be stepped up in war on HIV/Aids The government has stepped up the war against HIV will all ministries being ordered to promote testing of the virus. Health Principal Secretary Prof Fred Segor said the move will help government employees know their status. At the same time, the PS has asked county governments to form teams that can access funds meant for fighting HIV.
This comes as the government moves to stem the increasing cases of HIV infections every year. Kenya is currently ranked fourth among countries with the biggest HIV burden with over 100,000 new infections being detected annually. A HIV survey last year revealed that the national prevalence rate had decreased from 7.2 percent in 2007 to 5.6 in 2012 but Prof Segor says more has to be done.
“We need to remain consistent because despite the decrease, some regions continue to record more cases,” he said. According to the survey, women are more vulnerable that men with prevalence among those aged news@x-news.co.ke www.x-news.coke facebook.com/XnewsKenya twtter.com/XnewsKenya

Kimaiyo tells off UN over operation claims Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo has told off the United Nations over the plight of suspects being held at Kasarani Safaricom Stadium following operations in Eastleigh. The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday claimed the operations have been marred with arbitrary arrests and discrimination of asylum seekers. The agency had asked the government to ensure human rights are upheld even as the war on terror is sustained. The agency claimed police were making arbitrary arrests that target ethnic Somalis who are mainly refugees and asylum seekers. “Asylum-seekers and refugees are to be protected against arbitrary arrest and detention, including the right to have the reasons
for their detention reviewed by a court of law in a timely manner,” it said in a statement to newsrooms. But Kimaiyo who visited the stadium on Wednesday morning told the union to keep off the operation. He said claims of discrimination against one ethnic group are unfounded. “Let these organisations making baseless claims keep off,” said Kimaiyo. Police have arrested more than 4,000 suspects from Eastleigh which is mainly inhabited by ethnic Somalis. The area is thought to be home to many refugees and asylum seekers. Mr Kimaiyo said suspects from Ethiopia, Uganda, South Sudan and Somalia are among those in custody and denied claims that police were targeting people from an ethnic group.
OPERATION: A Somali woman is ushered onto an army truck in Eastleigh. Kimaiyo has refuted claims that the operation is targeting a particular tribe.
NSSF boss has 3 weeks to deliver or be sacked Labour Cabinet Secretary Kambi Kazungu has given the new NSSF boss three weeks to overhaul the operations at the national insurer or be sacked. Mr Kambi says the agency is fraught with corruption that needs to be eradicated. “I have given him three weeks to clean up NSSF or he be sacked,” he said. He was speaking at the launch of Pusetu, a new labour union that represents government workers at KICC in Nairobi. NSSF boss Richard Langat was confirmed as the Managing Trustee of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) following a recruitment process that ended in March. Mr Langat had served in acting capacity after the sacking of Tom Odongo last year. NSSF provides social security for workers in formal and informal sectors and is the trustee of about Sh130 billion .
Female thugs grab Sh0.2m jewellery from city shop Two female thugs raided a jewellery shop in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Tuesday evening and robbed attendants of items valued at Sh250,000. The two had posed as customers along Standard Street before they were joined by a man in the 3.45 pm incident. The gang ordered those present to lie down before they grabbed jewellery and cash which they loaded into a bag. Central OCPD Fredrick Lai said the gang later ordered a manager to open the CCTV recording room where they confiscated the images of the event. The three escaped without injuring anyone. No arrested has so far been made. “One of the women has been captured in many scenes. We hope to get her,” said a senior officer.
NO ESCAPE The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has made moves to compile data on all property owners in the country as it cracks down on landlords who have been failing to pay their taxes. Through what is known as the Kenya National Spatial Data Infrastructure (KNSDI) project, all properties will be mapped in a bid to expose tax evaders. “By June, KRA plans to reach over 10,000 landlords who have either been declaring nil returns or not filing returns despite owning rental properties,” said KRA domestic tax commissioner, Alice Owuor last week. Meanwhile, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich has advised the Authority to use the Geographic Information System (GIS), a platform that can be used to locate the properties, in order to map out buildings and find landowners who have not been paying their taxes.
Six year old girl saved from marriage to man, 19 A six-year old girl from Kabul in Afghanistan was saved from marriage to a 19-year old man in order to settle her father’s debt. US State Department officials claim Naghma was to be donated as a bride to cover her father, Taj Mohammad’s $2,500 (Sh216,500) loan. The cash had been used to cover
his wife’s medical expenses after she fell ill following harsh winter conditions in Afghanistan. “It was a difficult decision,” said Mohammad. “Everyone gives away their child but to give Naghma away like that was just so hard.” His financial troubles started in 2013 when the family
fled to avoid fighting in the country’s southern Helmand Province. Mohammad moved his wife and nine children to a refugee camp on the outskirts of Kabul hoping to give them a chance at a better life. They found it difficult to make a living, especially when the brutal Afghan winter arrived.
His wife was hospitalised after falling ill before his three-year-old son froze to death. Mohammad borrowed the cash to pay for his wife’s medical bills and other family expenses. When he couldn’t settle the debt, he decided to marry off Naghma, then only six, to the money lender’s 19-year-old
son. Human rights groups contacted US lawyer Kimberley Motley who lives between Kabul and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where her family is based. Motley arranged an assembly of Afghan elders known as a Jirga, and managed to get Naghma out of the marriage.

Pain killers double risk of heart attack The common medicine used by millions to ease pain can double the risk of getting heart attack and stroke, a new study says. Researchers at Erasmus University Medical Centre, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, links steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, diclofenac and coxibs to Atrial Fibrillation (AF). This is a cardiovascular condition that increases the risk of heart attack three-fold and stroke five times. AF is caused by fault in electrical condition, creating an irregularly higher heart beat that leads to dizziness and shallow breath. During the 13 year study, development of ill health and associated risk factors among adults aged 55 was regularly monitored in 8,423 people. A total of 857 participants developed AF, of whom 261 had never used NSAIDs, 554 had used the drugs in the past, and 42 were taking them. The researchers say NSAIDs accelerate AF because they stop production of cyclo-oxygenase enzyme, which increase blood pressure as a result of fluid retention. The use of the drugs was associated with a 76 per cent greater risk of AF after taking account of other risk factors, such as age, sex, and underlying cardiovascular problems. A recent use of within the preceding 30 days was linked to an 84 per cent greater risk. The results of the research published on the BMJ Open, said the drugs are commonly taken to ease minor complaints such as headaches, muscle pain and chronic conditions like arthritis.
Senators block Std 8 leavers from NYS A proposal that would have allowed Standard Eight drop-outs to join the National Youth Service has been rejected by senators. The Senate Committee on Labour argued that class eight leavers are still immature to serve in NYS and declined to reduce entry requirement from age 16 to 14. Committee chairman Stewart Madzayo said it was unconstitutional to enlist young people into the service. Committee vice chairperson Martha Wangari said those who join the service must be Form Four leavers. “That is when they are mature enough,” Ms Wangari said. The committee proposed that NYS training centres be set up in all counties.

Govt pledges Sh1.1million for Machakos crash victims’ send off The government will donate Sh1.1 million towards burial expenses for victims of last week’s Machakos road accident. The Machakos county government will provide another Sh1.7million to reach the burial target of Sh2.8million. A total of 13 people, including seven members of a family who were heading to a dowry ceremony in Mbooni, died in the accident. Kangundo DC Samuel Njora, who is chairing the funeral plans, said the national government had agreed to liaise with the county authorities to ensure the victims are laid to rest. The 13 died along the Masii-Tawa road in Mwala district of Machakos County last Saturday after a matatu they were travelling in crashed into River Isivuni as the driver negotiated a sharp bend. Nine more passengers, including the driver, sustained serious injuries and were taken to Machakos Level Five Hospital in critical condition. The driver, Sivanus Kibiwott, blamed the accident on brake failure. He claimed he negotiated two corners before plunging into River Isivuni as he tried to cut through a third one.
Verdict on PSV rules to be given next week
ROGUE BEHAVIOR: The new rules will help to tame the conduct of PSV operators.
The High Court will Tuesday next week rule on whether the new transport regulations should be suspended. Matatu Welfare Association had filed the case alongside nine other interested parties, including the Country Bus Association. They are seeking an extension of the deadline for compliance with the new laws, arguing that the gadgets they are expected to fit in their vehicles are in short supply. The government has insisted on the implementation of the guidelines, saying leaving the sector unregulated will expose the public to an unsafe transport system. Justice George Odunga will deliver the ruling. The implementation of the guidelines which, among other things, require Public Service Vehicles to be fitted with digital speed governors, started this month. The process initially caused a crisis in the sector as owners pulled matatus out of the roads for fear they would be impounded by police. However, more matatus have since resumed normal operations after complying with the rules.

Kambi tells wrangling unions to work together Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi has told the wrangling workers unions to discuss how they will share the rights to organise the forthcoming May 1 Labour Day celebrations. The Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) and the newly formed Public Servants Trade Unions of Kenya (Pusetu-K) have been bickering over who will host the annual fete. But speaking yesterday during the official launch of Pusetu at KICC, Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi
called for dialogue from the two unions and an agreement on how they will share the moderation of the celebrations to be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 1. “You all have right to come to the Labour Day celebrations. You should dialogue and agree on the way forward,” Kambi said. In what appears to be government’s support for the new union, Kambi, who was flanked by cabinet secretaries Ann Waiguru (Devolution) and Prof
Jacob Kaimenyi (Education), said he is confident the new union will do well in championing the rights of government employees. “It is more beneficial for the government to engage with unions that are strong and not those that are easily manipulated,” Waiguru said. Pusetu Secretary General Dr Charles Mukhwaya invited other unions to join the outfit saying they will be transparent in their operations. Chairman Tom Odege vowed to ensure
that the union fully participates in the coming celebrations warning that they will not accept to be “swallowed” again. “We shall be proving our strength on that day and take charge of the celebrations,” he said. Yesterday, Cotu boss Francis Atwoli declared during a press conference at the union’s headquarters that planning and hosting of labour day celebrations is a preserve of Cotu. “Whatever else people are saying are mere diversionary tactics,” he said.

Docs mull donation of living mans organs A Swedish man has sued doctors for allegedly discussing donating his organs while he was still alive. Jimi Fritz has filed a complaint against Sahlgrenska University Hospital doctors claiming he could hear them discuss whether to donate his organs just before they gave him a sedative that put him under. He had suffered a massive stroke which left him paralysed two years ago when the incident happened. At the time, Mr Fritz was unable to alert the medical staff that he was conscious although he claims to have heard them discuss. “I went to sleep. I couldn’t be awake. I thought I was going to die then,” Fritze said. Fitze, 42, has since filed a complaint with the Swedish National Health and Welfare Board, which oversees quality of healthcare in Sweden. The hospital has since confirmed that the incident is being investigated. “We cannot say much. We cooperate with the Health and Social Care Inspectorate about this investigation,” read the statement. “We take it very seriously, as with all notifications.” Fritze still has difficulty talking, but said he clearly remembers the moment he heard doctors talking about his dire prognosis as he lay nearby, unable to move but able to hear and understand the sounds around him. Experts say that is not uncommon in stroke patients. Fritze had been on vacation with his now ex-girlfriend when he suddenly collapsed due to a stroke. A nurse nurse nearby kept his airway open as help arrived. However, once he arrived in the hospital, Fritze said doctors were discouraged by scans. According to Fritze, they told his then-girlfriend to get his family and say their goodbyes.

National Oil to set up new LPG storage facility helpless:The Central Bank of Kenya has set base lending rate for commercial banks at 8 per cent but banks are charging up to 17 per cent.
State options in taming bank fees The government is working on strategies that will force commercial banks to lower lending rates to ensure all consumers reach middle income status. Vice President William Ruto said on Tuesday that high interest rates on bank loans have shut out many Kenyans from engaging in meaningful development activities. The current lending rates stand at about 17 per cent, which is double the base rate set by the Central Bank of Kenya. The base rate, which serves as a guideline for commercial banks to set their charges, stands at 8.5 per cent. The
government has asked large businesses and corporate bodies to shun commercial banks as a key source of funding. Speaking on Monday during celebrations to mark 60 years since the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) was set up, Ruto said if large business enterprises shun bank loans, they can raise funds for investment and expansion through NSE. “This will ensure banks begin to do business and stop what they are doing at the moment,” he said. Ruto said the goal will only be achieved by working with the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the body in charge of
monitoring money market activities. Ruto said high interest rates charged by commercial banks have increased the cost of doing business and made the country an uncompetitive investment destination. “If you are paying two per cent to a depositor and charging 20 per cent on a borrower, I don’t think that is business,” he said. He said the government will soon release a proposal to members of the private sector which is expected to work out ways of reducing lending rates to a single digit.

Abuja’s economy is worth Sh44.2 trillion ahead of second placed South Africa’s Sh30.6 trillion. This marks an 89 per cent rise that has even exceeded analysts’ expectations. Nigeria’s economy had to be reevaluated because some industries had not been included in previous assessments. The UN Statistical Commission recommends a statistical rebasing every five years but the country’s last Gross Domestic Product (GDP) count was in 1990. The National Oil Corporation is planning to build a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) filling facility and lubricants warehouse. The facilities will provide employment to more than 20 new people. The company human resource department said recruitment is ongoing. Applicants with experience in the petroleum sector should contact the Director of the firm’s Executive Selection Division at Deloitte Consulting via esd@deloitte. co.ke or mail a letter to the Director, Deloitte Place, Muthangari P. 0. Box 40092 00100, Nairobi, Kenya. “We are fully depending on costly leased facilities,” said National Oil’s General Manager of Finance and Administration, Kamau Mugenda.
“We will be able to meet our mandate of stabilising supply, distribution and pricing of LPG in the country.” The project, which is set for completion in July this year, will eliminate reliance on hospitality storage and filling of lubricants in Nairobi. “For the rest of the country, we are setting up the miniLPG filling facilities in Kipkaren to serve North Rift and another one in Kisumu to serve Western Kenya,” Mugenda said. The units are expected to create more employment opportunities for Kenyans. The country consumes an estimated 90,000 metric tonnes of LPG annually and the figure is expected to reach 200,000 once the current supply limits are addressed.

The consumer responsibilities in E-commerce The Consumer Protection Bill has established a set of regulations that enforce the rights of retailers and consumers. Anyone engaged in online trading is responsible for reading the terms related to E-transaction. The Bill indicates that the conditions may include terms of payment, delivery, warranties and after-sales service. Those making online purchases without understanding the terms can not complain to authorities if they are dissatisfied with the goods they receive. Similarly, if a retailer misleads a consumer or breaks the terms of their policies, a buyer may report the person to either the nearest police department or the Consumers Federation of Kenya. Conditions for online pur-
chases also include the return and exchange of goods, the cancellation of a service or the need for refund depending on the situation. The consumer may only ask for the services if their request is in line with a retailer’s policy. If an online store has a no refund policy, the consumer has no right to request one since it was stated before the purchase was made. The Bill also indicates that a retailer is responsible for ensuring their site is secure so that customers are not at risk of losing private information to fraudsters. The consumer is also responsible for their security. If he or she leaves a computer vulnerable to hackers and viruses, they cannot blame a retailer for the loss of cash or private information.

KCB reduces withdrawal charges over ATM failure
Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) has reduced its overthe-counter withdrawal charges to Sh30 from Sh220, following a hitch in their ATM system. The bank, which has the widest network of ATMs in East
Africa, has received complaints from customers unable to access their money from the machines. KCB’s systems have been experiencing outages as the bank attempts to upgrade to incorporate use of Mastercard
debit and credit cards in its operations. The Central Bank of Kenya has directed all local banks to switch to chip-based cards after a series of fraud-related crimes had cost the banking industry close to Sh1.6 billion.
“All our customer data has been migrated to an Electronic Mastercard Visa compliant environment,” said the bank. KCB’s machines have been unable to dispense money and customers have complained about their accounts reflecting
inaccurate balances. “We are working to resolve the issue,” the bank said in a recent statement. The bank hopes to help more customers access their money over the counter. as the bank management fixes the problem.
Lalmba Microfinance is a group that helps budding entrepreneurs secure small loans of up to Sh50, 000 to fund their business. “Those that show a particular talent for business are given the opportunity to apply for a loan,” says Lalmba. To qualify for the loans, individuals must put together a business plan indicating what they want to invest in, how the business will work and how they will earn enough to repay the loan within 12 months. “The loan amounts are small but important because this provides individuals with the necessary cash to start a new life,” says the group. Moses Okech Awino secured a $500 (Sh17,400) from Lalmba to open a motorcycle spare parts shop. Lalmba reports that his business has grown from a canopied shelf with oil filters and inner tubes to a shop with timing chains, batteries, shock absorbers and padlocks. Awino plans to start selling motorcycles in his home town. Joseph odhiambo, a trained tailor, used his Lalmba loan to buy a sewing machine and fabrics. He now three machines and two full-time employees.

Make Sh60,000 a month as a bicycle bread distributor Bicyle bread distributors can make as much as Sh60,000 a month, according to a statement from small business lender, Kiva Zip. On average, distributors make Sh200 for every 3 crates they deliver. They get the bread from bakeries and deliver it to retailers. l The initial investment needed for a bread distribution business is Sh8,000. This only caters for a bicycle. Plastic crates in which the bread is packed are supplied by the bakeries and returned at the end of the day. l According to a survey by entrepreneur empowerment group, World Bike, an average bicycle operator spends Sh300 per month on maintenance. This means that by the end of the year, he has enough to purchase a new bicycle. l Operators’ profits are determined by how many crates of bread they can carry. The distributors typically stack up to six crates on their bicycles at a go . l This can be dangerous as it blocks their view and can lead to accidents.

Grocer rides into boda boda business Adhiambo Kausi had been selling vegetables in Matoso for close to a decade before she decided to diversify her business. At the time, the single mother of six was barely making enough money to support her family. She had a small stall sparsely stocked with beans and potatoes but her
supply was not enough to make a decent profit. “I took a loan for Sh30,000,” she says, adding that the money helped her re-stock her stall and put down a payment for a boda boda. With a fresh supply of produce, including cabbages, green vegetables and pineapples,
Adhiambo was able to make prompt monthly remittances for her motorcycle. She finished paying for it last year. It earns her close to Sh7, 000 a month while her shop brings in up to Sh80,000 over the same period. She splits the profits from her
boda boda service with her hired motorcycle driver. Adhiambo hopes to save enough money to pay for a second motorcycle. She says the boda boda business may not be as profitable as the shop, but it doesn’t need her constant attention. She is happy to have both.

Prostate cancer most common in Kenya Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in Kenyan men above the age of 50. Globally, prostate cancer is sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men. A non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than colon, bladder, melanoma, lymphoma and kidney cancers combined. According to statistics, a man is 35 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the prostate, a walnut-sized gland found right below the bladder — but only in men. It is one of the most common forms of cancer in men around the world. This type of cancer attacks the prostate gland, which usually produces much of the fluids contained in male semen. Late detection leads to rapid spread to other parts of the body. It’s believed that if paternal or male relatives have a history of prostate cancer, there is a possibility one may follow suit. There is no sure way of preventing prostate cancer but regular check-up visits to the oncologist should help. Prostate cancer can be counter attacked by watchful waiting, active surveillance, surgery, radiation, hormonal therapy or chemotherapy. A drug called finasteride can prevent development of prostate cancer in some
The walking dead don’t just happen in movies. Folks in Naivasha can attest to this. On January 7 a man was rushed to the Naivasha District Hospital after attempting to take his own life. Mr Paul Mutora had drank insecticide after a row with his father. The man was then put under strong medication that is suspected to have terribly slowed down his heartbeat. Medics could not detect a pulse from him or any other signs of life. He was
then declared dead and sent to the morgue. He came back to life as morticians were getting ready to embalm his body. Good timing indeed. All the personnel at the scene fled in sheer terror and panic shutting the doors firmly behind them to stop the “dead man” from following them. Had he not woken up at that time, he would have died for the “second” time. His family was preparing for his funeral but were delightedly shocked by the good news.

Tiles help keep kitchens clean Ceramic tile floors can improve hygiene and safety in the kitchen given that preparation of meals involves many equipment and ingredients. Wycliffe Asanya of Flamingo Tiles Kenya says kitchens are prone to stains, scratches, cracks and slippery floors. Yet they must be clean and safe. Asanya shares the
reasons why it is necessary to embrace ceramic tiles. “We are likely to engage in many activities that involve water, other liquids are bound to pour on the floor. It can therefore be dangerous to work on slippery floors since most of the time we are moving about the kitchen,” he said. Ceramic tiles are rough and are therefore
slip-resistant. In addition, the tiles resist stains. “The vegetables we handle in the kitchen along with other foods have natural stains. Synthetic stains too can find their way into the kitchen. Glaze additives in the ceramics during manufacturing give them the resistance,” said Asanya.

Brown better for exterior jobs

Brown is a bright and warmer colour that is considered friendlier, welcoming and inviting. It is also comfortable and, therefore, best for your home’s exterior paint job. Colour Psychology Suggests that brown is associated with orderliness and life. Your visitors will naturally feel comfortable and psychologically settled in an organised environment. Dominic Otieno, an experienced painter in the city, says homes
that look approachable are likely to be more sociable. “Approachability means visitors and your neighbours will feel free and more open to interact with your household even if as the world gets socialised with technology,” said Otieno. Brown has for long been associated with the earth, the source of life. Everyone wants to feel full of life. It blends well with other backgrounds and it fits the natural orientation.

Built in the shape of a shoe, the building is designed to detail, decorated with a beautiful fence. It had a mail box and dog house also designed as a shoe to make the entire house seem complete. Having five storeys means it has ample space. At the top left side, it is fitted with master bedroom adorned with glossy paint on the roof. The walls are light blue to match with the bed covers. At the bottom of the shoe is a kitchen that is equipped with modern kitchen units and a big chimney. The study room is on the top floor to give a clear view of the serene garden and fresh air away from all activities. For safety reasons, the house has a fire escape, making the house a dream come true.

Carrying a barrel of hot tar for fun
Free running for mental and physical fitness exercise: Free runners train to overcome obstacles.
Free running is a physical and mental sport in which free-runners train with the purpose of developing their minds and bodies to overcome and interact with obstacles in their environment in the most intelligent and physically challenging manner. The sport requires consistency
quoteit
“I cannot even imagine where I would be today were it not for that handful of friends who have given me a heart full of joy. Let’s face it, friends make life a lot more fun.”
and disciplined training focused on attaining functional strength, conditioning, expansion of the mental and physical capabilities, creativity, space awareness and looking beyond the traditional use of objects. This is important is because free running involves balance, vaulting, rolling, climbing,
and jumping. There is no single movement that constitutes free running. The free runner chooses the movements he wishes to execute. He should be able to distinguish what is effective and what is expressive and the time in which the movement is most appropriate.
It is a dangerous pastime, though. One wrong step could lead to a broken bone and maybe months in hospital. Free running is for those who want to find a new means of expressing themselves. It can also be therapeutic, one gets to run their troubles or worries away.
Into the tombs with Lara Croft

“It’s better to make fun of yourself because you’ve always got someone around to make fun of, and they can’t sue you.” — P. J. O’Rourke
“My philosophy is: If you can’t have fun, there’s no sense in doing it.” — Paul Walker
“I realize that humor isn’t for everyone. It’s only for people who want to have fun, enjoy life, and feel alive.”
Most alternative sports are basically lunatic ideas and hot tar barrel ranks high among the most insane. A thrill seeker is likely to escape injury in other extreme sports but not hot tar barrel carrying. Clearly, hurtling down the street with a barrel of bubbling tar on your back must surely leave you feeling the heat, literally. It’s frightening to contemplate it but to the folks who hold it dear, it’s a thing of class, a family tradition to be cherished and passed on from one generation to another. This practice is believed to have started in 1688 when it just entailed rolling a hot tar barrel. Today, people plan for it just as they plan for Christmas day. It’s mainly practiced in Ottery St. Mary, East Devon in England. Participants bear the tar barrels on their backs, run through a crowd till the weight or heat becomes too much. They then hand it over to the foolish contender. Young ones, too don’t get left out. There are smaller barrels for them but even they have to endure the heat just like everybody else.

the hitlist
Tomb Raider is an action game starring a tough character named Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor. The game play delivers the intense and gritty story of Lara as she enters tombs on wild quests. You must find a way to break free, make your way by torchlight in darkened caverns, outrun falling boulders and jump across huge chasms all within the first 10 minutes of gameplay. Though fun, much of the action at the beginning of the game involves “quick time events,” where you’re tasked with pressing a button rapidly or pushing an analog
stick in a given direction at a precise time for the animated sequence to play out. Armed with only raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, the definitive edition offers multi player maps and better weapons. The graphics are clearer for better manoeuvring and extra tombs where one can get to discover fun extra items, and a voice control that helps you talk to the game, ask for maps and pause. The game has focused more on improving Lara Croft but not so much of the environment so the game has been rated 85 out of 100 in meta critic score of game reviews.

Guardiola expects Man United to ‘park the bus’ Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola expects English Champions Manchester United to sit back in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. United held the Bavarians to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford last week with a defensive strategy and the Spaniard expects David Moyes to employ similar tactics in the return leg. “I think they will sit very deep. They play very defensively and always look to counter – it is something they do very, very well,” Guardiola said. “It’s never easy against English teams. United are a very big team. Before the first game, everybody was talking about Bayern, but now people know that Manchester can win in Munich.
“But we’re playing at home. That’s an important factor. If we win, we are through. If not, we are out. It will come down to small details. Our players know, after the experience in Manchester, how United play. My players know their strength and weaknesses. “ Guardiola discussed the possibility of the tie being decided by spot kicks and stressed that the mental aspect of the game could play a key role. “Penalties are less about technique and more about courage,” the former Barcelona boss mused. “It is all in the head.” Bayern will be without key players such as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara due to suspension and injury. Guardiola admitted he has limited options to choose from.

Ndovu ready to defend title
Ndovu coach Enos Otieno says the defending Bamburi Rugby Super Series champions will have to play their best rugby to retain the title when the tournament kicks off on the 26 of April. Otieno said his players are aware other teams will target Ndovu and are preparing accordingly. “The task ahead is definitely tough. As the champion, we know all the other teams will be out to dethrone Ndovu but I am confident the players are up to whatever challenge that will be thrown at them,” he said. “Training has been going on well, we have a week or two to finalize a few things.” Otieno is one of the four coaches leading Kenyan franchises in the Bamburi series. Nakuru club promoted to premier hockey league Nakuru Hockey Club has put another feather in the town’s cap after being promoted to the Premier League. Nakuru topped the standings of the16-team second-tier Kenya Hockey Union national championship and will now be playing with the big boys in the next season. The win and promotion marks another sporting
achievement for the Rift Valley town after its rugby team continued their domination with a win over Kenya Commercial Bank last weekend. With the first position in the national hockey league taken, debutants Homa Bay could finish second if they win their two remaining matches. Midfielder Brian Otieno said the players are encouraged by the performance and are fo-

Our target is to win promotion next season,” he said. On Saturday, Homa Bay beat Kimathi University 1-0 and followed it up with 4-0 demolition of Multimedia University on Sunday in Kisumu. Their good
run was helped by Kenyatta University who humbled Wazalendo Youth 4-0 on Sunday in Nairobi. Early pacesetters Parklands Sports Club finished fifth in style by beating Mt. Kenya University 8-1. Volleyball team eyes ticket to Poland games The national sitting volleyball head coach Juma Walukhu is confident the team will do well in the world championship qualifiers, which got underway in Morocco today. Kenya is one of the 11 teams vying for the sole ticket to the world championships to be held in Poland from June 7-15. Kenya has been drawn with Africa champions Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African qualifiers. “We want the ticket to the world championships. In the past we have had challenges and yet managed to produce results but now the support is there. There is no option but to perform,” he said. “The group is certainly very tough, which demands that we have to bring our best game forward. Our system will have to change too depending on the opponent.” Walukhu said the experience of players like Anthony Mwendo, Dennis Muga, Polycarp Mboya, Anthony Manyara, Itaken Timoi and Henry Odiyo, who have been playing since 2010, will be valuable to the team’s efforts. The team left for Morocco on Sunday after a Sh6.4million grant from the government for air tickets and allowances. The National Fund for the Disabled also boosted the kitty with Sh200, 000.
