30 more Somalis to be deported From Page 1 A total of 42 Somali nationals and 23 Ethiopians were screened on Thursday. The deportation follows another one carried out on Wednesday on a chartered flight from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Mogadishu. It brings to 112 the number of
deportees flown back to Somalia. Police have raised alert levels following the launch of operation Usalama Watch triggered by a spate of terrorist attacks on innocent civilians. The drive has mostly been confined to Eastleigh in Nairobi and Mombasa. More than 4,000 suspects have
been arrested in a police crackdown on suspects thought to be assisting terror activities on Kenyan soil. Tana River Senator Abdi Bule is among high profile individuals who have fallen into the hands of the security agents after police detained him for more than an hour after his identification documents were said
to be fake. The senator was heading to Eastleigh with two children and a bodyguard when he drove into a police dragnet near Mlango Kubwa along Juja Road. Last night, another 300 refugees were arrested in the ongoing swoop. Most of those in custody have no
valid papers, were found outside legally gazetted areas or lack official documents. Interior Cabinet Secretary Jopseph ole Lenku says the operation will continue until the government is convinced that all illegal immigrants are in government hands.
ACK won’t accept gays, says Wabukhala The Anglican Church of Kenya has reaffirmed its opposition to homosexuality. Archbishop Eliud Wabukhala said the church “will never support” the practice, terming it contrary to Christian teachings. Belgium’s gay Primie Minister Elio Di Rupo early last week told African leaders at an EU-Africa summit in Brussels to respect the rights of minorities, including homosexuals. Among those present included Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya) and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni who early this year signed into law a controversial bill banning homosexuality. Nigeria’s Goodluck Jonathan whose country also outlaws gay practices was also present. But Dr Wabukhala has told off the West for putting unnecessary pressure on African leaders to legalise homosexuality by disguising it a human right. “They are piling pressure on us to treat homosexuality as a human right but this practice is destructive to our moral fabric,” he said. He termed the practice as a strange western ideology that only demeans human dignity.

Kenyan woman jailed in US over marriage scandal A US court has jailed a Kenyan woman for one year for her role in a fake marriage scheme. Margaret Kimani, 30, was charged by the US Federal Court with what justice John Woodcock described as “one of the most sophisticated marriage frauds.” Ms Kimani had committed the offence in December. She was among the 28 convicted in Maine State for participating a marriage scam where US citizens were paid
to marry immigrants to enable the latter acquire the Green Card. Ms Kimani was sentenced on Tuesday and placed under a three year probation. Prosecutors accused the woman of illegally staying in US after her visitor’s visa expired in 2003. “She got married to an American man in December of the same year to enable her acquire US citizenship more easily,” they said in an affidavit.
The court was also told Ms Kimani had filed a suit against the spouse after the man pulled out of the scheme alleging abuse under the Violence Against Women Act. “She eventually got permanent residency in March 2010 based on the news@x-news.co.ke www.x-news.coke facebook.com/XnewsKenya twtter.com/XnewsKenya

Police kill 3 in failed robberies
TOUGH TIMES A new study from research group Ipsos synovate has shown that Kenyans are concerned with the rising cost of living as the price of basic commodities is becoming too expensive. This sad reality is clearly one reflection of the most serious problem facing the country today’, which 50 per cent of respondents identified, is the high cost of living,” said the study’s lead researcher, Tom Wolf. Wolf was presenting the results of a survey done between February and March 2014 that sought to find out what Kenyan’s thought of their current economic situation. The study revealed that half of the population felt that life had become too expensive and believed things would get worse.
Police last night shot dead three suspected thugs in two separate attempted robberies in Nairobi and recovered homemade guns. Police say two suspects were killed in Mathare at 1am after they attempted to rob a businessman. Two of their accomplices escaped on foot. Another suspect was killed in Mukuru slums and a homemade gun found on him in a botched robbery. Elsewhere, a gang of six raided a petrol station in Westlands on Wednesday night and stole cash and 16 gas cylinders. The thugs beat and tied up the guards and proceeded to the cylinders onto a waiting lorry. No one has been arrested.
WHO fears Ebola in Guinea may take time to contain The World Health Organization, WHO, fears the Ebola outbreak in Guinea may not be tamed any time soon. Dr Keiji Fukuda said the geographical dispersion of the disease has made its containment difficult. The outbreak began in the south and moved up to the capital Conakry, where approximately 20 cases have been reported. It then moved to neighbouring Liberia, around the same, killing 10 people. It is also suspected that nine patients in Mali have the virus. “This is one of the most challenging Ebola outbreaks that we have ever faced. This is because first we see a wide geographic dispersion of cases. So this has come in from a number of districts as well as a large city in Guinea, Conakry,” said Fukuda. Of the 157 people diagnosed with the disease in Guinea, 101 people have died. The first case of Ebola was recorded in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of Con-
go. The disease then claimed 280 lives. This is the same strain of virus that has been reported in Guinea, according to the Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF. “We are facing the most aggressive strain of Ebola, the Zaire strain. It kills more than nine out of 10 people infected. There’s no cure, no medicine that kills this specific virus,” said epidemiologist Michel Van Herp. The disease can take two days to three weeks to become apparent. The first symptoms are sore throat and fever, then also muscle pain, headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, organ failure and blood loss or shock. A person can carry the virus and not know it and pass it on through direct contact with blood, mucus and other bodily fluids. The natural host of this virus is thought to be essentially fruit-eating bats and other animals. Health officials have told people not to eat bush meat.

Pistorius endures torrid day of grilling from prosecutor Wednesday was quite an epic day in the murder trial of South African paralympian Oscar Pistorius as prosecution lawyer Gerrie Nel cross-examined him.
Nel showed video footage of the athlete at a gun range shooting a watermelon and then went on to compare the way the watermelon exploded to how Steenkamp’s head
looked. To justify the analogy, he showed the graphic photo of the fatal injuries while asking Oscar Pistorius to look at it and take responsibility for his actions.
An emotional Pistorius turned away from the image on the monitor screen saying, “I’ve taken responsibility… but I will not look at a picture where I am tormented by
what I saw and felt that night... I remember. I don’t have to look at a picture, I was there.’’ The trial continues as prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who
has now been branded the “bull terrier”, is expected to display more of his combat style mode of questioning as he seeks to get Pistorius to confess.

Low KMTC student intake linked to shortage of staff
haNds-oN: Kenya Medical Training College students serve patients at a public hospital. shortage of teaching staff has been blamed for the few students admitted to the colleges.
Shortage of staff is to blame for the few students admitted to the Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC). The Director, Mr Olang’o Onudi, who addressed the opening ceremony of a workshop in Kisumu for all KMTC 38 principals and support staff said inadequate staff and facilities was the biggest challenge facing the institution. Out of the 25,000 qualified students, only 7,000 join the 38 KMTC colleges. Onudi said the colleges have 1,981 staff but require another 1,951. There is a shortage of academic and support staff. The five-day workshop seeks to discuss how to equip the principals, accountants, human resource managers and administrators with
management skills. Onudi said KMTC is unable to increase staff due to lack of funds. He said out of the 38 colleges, only seven had title deeds to the land the schools are built on. Onudi said majority of land on which the colleges are built is part of public hospitals and urged the principals to maximise on staff for maximum results. With over 6,000 students graduating from KMTC colleges annually, it is the only middle level health training institution in the country. KMTC accounts for 80 per cent of the workforce public hospitals. As the college prepares to transit to degree-awarding level, a number of KMTC staff are pursuing various

Muslim leaders support ‘Miraa-time’ regulation Muslim leaders have thrown their weight behind plans by the national anti-drug agency National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, NACADA’s bid to regulate miraa chewing hours. In a meeting with Nacada Chairman John Mututho at the NSSF building, the leaders led by nominated MP Osman Hassan and Senator Emma Mbura, agreed to support proposals that will see
miraa chewing hours reduced. “Miraa is destroying our society and that is why we want all the stakeholders involved to discuss the issue the drug that is already in Parliament,” said Hassan. The coastal region was quoted as the most affected and the decision to regulate it is seen as a vital point to help save the deteriorating lives in the affected regions. “We therefore support
the standpoint of NACADA to organize a forum for complete analyses of issues of miraa,” added Hassan. These words of support were echoed by Mbura, who said she fully supported the move to regulate its usage. “We want to solve this problem because in the next seven or so years, we may not have young men to rely on if miraa and other drugs issues like cocaine are not dealt with,” said Mbura. The leaders
had earlier in the meeting agreed with Mututho to have a forum with other community leaders (notably the Ameru’s council of elders, Njuri Ncheke) to further discuss on the social, legal and political issues linked to miraa usage. “We are going to have a meeting with Njuri Ncheke then have a final meeting with NACADA to analyze our findings. The position of NACADA is going to be the people’s position,” said Mututho.

Yahoo tells users to change passwords Yahoo has advised its users to change their passwords following the discovery of a major security flaw. This comes after news emerged that a product the firms used to safeguard data could be compromised to allow spying. Security advisers have also echoed the warning about the flaw dubbed Heartbleed Bug because of the “leak of memory contents” between servers and their clients. Yahoo blogging platform Tumblr advised people to “change your passwords everywhere - especially your high-security services like email, file storage and banking”. Finish Security Company, Codenomicon and Google Security revealed that a flaw had existed for two years in OpenSSL, a popular cryptographic library used to digitally scramble sensitive data as it passes from one computer to another. They said the flaw could be used to expose the secret keys that identify service providers employing OpenSSL. Attackers are said to be able to steal names and passwords of people using the services by making copies of the keys. “Our team has successfully made the appropriate corrections across the main Yahoo properties - Yahoo Homepage, Yahoo Search, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Food, Yahoo Tech, Flickr and Tumblr - and we are working to implement the fix across the rest of our sites right now,” a Yahoo spokesperson told BBC. NCC Group - a cybersecurity company that advises many members of the FTSE 250 - described the situation as “grave”. “The level of knowledge now needed to exploit this vulnerability is substantially less than it was 36 hours ago,” the company’s associate director Ollie Whitehouse told the BBC.

Car&General unveils fuel efficient Tuk Tuk fresh release: The fuel efficient Piaggio City Petrol three wheeler will help operators cut costs.
Motor manufacturer Car and General has officially launched a new range of a three wheeler vehicles. The automobile, dubbed Piaggio City Petrol, will give current and aspiring Tuk Tuk operators chance to own a more fuel efficient version of the brand. “The growing need for urban transport that is driven by a rapid expansion of cities and towns offers great opportu-
nities for buyers of Piaggio three wheeler vehicles,” says Car and General National Sales Manager of Piaggio, Cleon Oyuga. “The running costs for diesel and petrol engine models are considerably below those of cars and pick-ups. To cut the expenses, many organisations and individual entrepreneurs are turning to the vehicles,” Oyuga says. The vehicle has a fuel consumption of 32 kilome-
tres per litre and is available as a passenger vehicle. Car and General says it has a workshop in Lusaka Road, Nairobi, where tuk tuk owners can access repair and servicing facilities. “The City Petrol has an electric starter and advantage of a lower noise level which is ideal for taxi services in towns,” said Oguya. “It is equipped with strong suspension system which
makes the vehicle stable. The Piaggio comes with sufficient room for three passengers and a luggage boot. “We also have City Diesel three wheelers. These are available in passenger vehicles which are economical to operate as taxi services and van and pick-up models. The vans and pick-ups are ideal for delivery work, courier services, laundry and fast food operations,” he says.
About 100 Chinese investors will soon unveil the building of a city with at least 20 skyscrapers in Athi River worth Sh65 billion. Narok gold mining set to commence Mining company Goldpat will this month start smelting gold valued at about Sh1.2 billion for export from Lolgorian in Narok County. The minefield at Kilimapesa, Transmara, is targeted to yield about 10kg (3,500 ounces) of gold per month. Production is expected to go up once world gold prices improve. The company halted extraction of gold at its Migori goldmine in mid 2013 citing losses due to low global market prices and mining constraints. The company received mining license two years ago. It needs to produce 283.4 kg (10, 000 ounces) for the venture to be lucrative. Goldpat extracted a total of about 5, 000 ounces from Migori.

250,000 jobs untapped in Kenya’s film industry The Kenya film industry has potential to create 250,000 jobs, latest data by the Kenya Film Commission (KFC) shows. The report says the sector can generate more than Sh40 billion revenue. But it says the feat will only be achieved if major issues and industry constraints are addressed. One of the major concerns is lack of national film policy that would decide how, when and where local films can be made. Over the past 15 years, several drafts have been drawn but no decision made on the laws. l “KFC seeks to ensure Kenya devel-
ops an environment and a viable film industry which reflects Kenyan identity, character and cultural diversity. It will also ensure the industry is appreciated as one of the main economic activities in Kenya,” says a statement from the commission. l “With the enactment of the film policy, we will be able to oversee the development of a harmonious regulatory environment for the film industry in Kenya while ensuring enforcement of guidelines, regulatory policies and codes of conduct.” l The commission’s report notes that
there are thousands of Kenyans hoping to break into the silver screen. Others want to be writers, directors, producers, technical experts or animators whose talent goes unnoticed. The few who make it, like rising star, Lupita Nyong’o and Eddie Gathegi, serve as pivotal figures in promoting the sector. l “It is the new frontier for job creation,” says market analyst Danson Mwangangi. He says the Kenya Film Commission seeks to generate 10 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the entertainment industry.
Toyota to recall more faulty cars Japanese auto maker, Toyota, will recall 300,000 cars and utilities in Australia to repair mechanical faults. The models recalled are Yaris subcompact, Urban Cruiser SUVs that were assembled between January 2005 and August 2010. Others are RAV4 SUVs and Hilux compact pick-ups made between June 2004 and December 2010. The 179,000 Hilux units built between April 2004 and end of 2009 have been recalled for utility purposes. The car manufacturer has recalled 6.5million cars, 3.5 million of which are expected to get replacements for a spiral cable attached to the driver’s side airbag. Other problems include seat rails, steering columns, windscreen wipers and a
glitch with the engine starters that poses a fire risk. Last month, US and the manufacturer agreed on a Sh103.7 billion settlement in conclusion of a four-year criminal investigation into the carmaker’s disclosure of safety problems. The company admitted it misled US consumers on two problems that caused cars to accelerate even as drivers tried to slow down. Toyota is not the only auto maker facing problems. In February, General Motors recalled more than 1.6 million vehicles, 13 years after first noticing mechanical faults. In Kenya, Toyota is the most popular car because of low fuel consumption and ability to cope with rough terrain.

business101 Selling a business is a process not an idea Business owners typically consider selling their businesses when they no longer see the need to run them. “It usually happens at the time of business stress,” says a report from Biz Brokers, a group that helps small enterprises find buyers for their business. “This could be anything from employee headaches to customer problems to real or anticipated downturns or even health reasons or impending retirement.” According to the group, below are the steps one needs to take before selling their enterprise: l Prepare and analyze the financial statements of the business. Buyers will ask for a history of tax returns and financial records to be able to see how much profits the business can make.
l Seek accounting and legal advice on the tax ramifications of a sale. While the sale will bring in some money, there are fees that the previous owner must pay to the government in the form of taxes. l Biz Brokers advises business owners to renovate their premises before a sale. This, they say, will help attract prospective buyers, while ensuring that the value of the property can be hiked to make more profit. l Perhaps the most important thing to consider is hiring a broker to find a buyer. Firms like Biz Brokers are both qualified and will save a great deal of time in the long run. “Our goal is to locate the best possible buyer with the minimum of inconvenience to you,” says the firm.
NEW: A Maintainance Free (MF) battery from Chloride Exide. Kenya will be the first country in East, Central and Southern Africa to produce such batteries.
Kenya to get first MF battery plant Associated Battery Manufacturers (ABM) has invested $5 million (Sh433 million) on a major technology expansion program that will enable the company produce maintenance free (MF) batteries in parts of Est Africa, including Kenya. The rechargable batteries, which do not require constant maintenance, can be used to power large portable electrical devices and power systems
that are not on the national electricity grid. This is at a much lower cost than other low-maintenance batteries like the common lithium-ion brands. MF car batteries cost close to Sh8,000 while lithium ion brands can cost just as much but do not last as long. “Previously Chloride Exide Kenya Limited has been importing MF batteries,” said ABM Managing Director Guy Jack. “By manufacturing them in
Kenya, ABM becomes the first in East, Central and Southern Africa to produce MF batteries. We have started production, which will be followed by field and laboratory tests before rolling out the batteries to the country and East Africa market.” “We have been noticing a steady swing from lead acid batteries to the maintenance free type in East Africa. While the conventional lead acid
batteries remain the most popular with motorists, we have realized MF batteries are gaining ground because they eliminate the need to top up the cells. ABM will manufacture a full range of MF batteries for all motor vehicles and generators.” He added that the company will continue producing Chloride Exide lead acid batteries, inferior to the MF brand but popular among local consumers.
buckstop Womam making Sh1200 a day from chapati
Susan Mwangi, a 35 year old woman, prepares and sells chapati in Embakasi, as a way of earning a living. She makes Sh1200 a day. “My day starts at 5am every day,” Susan says, “in one hour, I prepare myself and the necessary equipment for making chapatis so that by six, I am at my chapati making stall.” That early in the morning, those going to work may pass by for a chapati to get their day started.
By 9am, the business has picked up. Some people may order from their homes for breakfast but her best customers are masons. “Those mjengo men (masons) really like chapatis, one can eat as many as five on one sitting,” she says. On a single day, she prepares 60 chapatis, which are usually finished by 3pm. Some make orders for lunch or supper from their homes, which she delivers.
Some days she has to cook even more depending on the orders received and customers that have come to her stall. On any given day, she can she makes a profit of roughly of sh830, in a week she makes sh8400 and a month she makes sh33, 000 minus the expenses. “The money I make is enough for me and my two young children,” she says, “I get to pay the bills and cater for them and their needs.”

Upper Hill roads to be completed in August Roads running through Nairobi’s Upper Hill area are due for completion in August this year, the Ministry of Transport has said. The area has been prone to traffic jams and frequent gridlocks due to its stalled construction. The ministry notes that the stretch has not been good enough to cater for a number of businesses that were relocated there over the past year. According to a survey by research group IBM, 70 percent of Nairobi residents use public transport. The study mentions that commuters spend as much as two hours wasted in traffic. The Upper hill upgrade hopes to cut that lost time as much as is possible. The ministry
says that once the project is complete, the gridlocks will no longer be a problem. The project, which is already behind schedule, had been delayed due to financing problems after the Ministry failed to get enough funds to pay for its expenses. Infrastructure Principal Secretary, John Mosonik has said that the government has since resolved the issues. “The contractor is on site and work is in progress after funding and relocation of services hitches have been resolved,” he explained during an previous public address. “The roads are 48 per cent done and the entire project is expected to be completed by August this year,” he said.

changing times: Men nowadays are concerned about personal grooming and dressing.

The rise of the metrosexual man
These days, men are more conscious about their appearance, some even more than women. The metrosexual man, an urban figure with a refined sense of taste, takes care of himself, his appearance matters more to him than anything else. His dressing style has to consist of the latest fashion and his hair always has to be neat. “I keep up to date with
latest fashion,” says Vincent Awour, who is dressed in blue khaki trousers, a bright yellow shirt, Ankara loafers and is carrying a blue man purse to match. It started all so innocently with men getting their hair braided and ears pierced. Now things have stepped up a notch higher and men are invading the woman’s territory; going for manicures, pedicures, tweezing their
eyebrows, shaving their legs and getting facials. “What is wrong with me wanting a smooth face?” asks Awuor. “We also want to look and feel good.” Some even wear tight jeans and there is even an emerging trend where men have been seen wearing skirts. It is almost as if it has become a competition between men and women
to see who dresses better, who smells better and even who has less body hair. Most women, however, do not seem to mind the “competition”. “I would not mind if my man goes for manicures or pedicures or keeps up with the latest fashion trends,” says Racheal Ndunge. “I like my man looking and smelling good all the time.”
Tired of cleaning your navel? you can remove it The navel, also known as the belly button, is one of the most important parts of the body, especially for women. It is where the umbilical cord of a baby is attached to a mother, through which the child gets its nutrition until after it is born. The nerve organ called the solar plexus lies immediately below the navel and is considered a source of energy for the body. It is the region where digestion of food takes place. Researchers say that it is also the place where emotions are stored since one feels a pull at their navel

when they experience a break-up or a loss. Despite these import functions, some body modification enthusiasts have chosen to get rid of their navels simply because they do not want to deal with navel lint, the disturbing smell, and the bother of having to clean it. The navel removal, or navelectomy as it is commonly known, is a procedure that completely removes the belly button. It is cut down to its base with a surgical razor and a part known as the umbilicus is carefully removed. It is then closed up with a combination of internal and external

stitches. It is a very difficult procedure and should only be done by a professional body modification artist or a qualified surgeon. One body modification enthusiast described the pain as, “feeling as if my intestines were being tugged on. It hurt in the pit of my abdomen which hurt in a way I have never experienced before.” Asked why he did it he said,” I wanted something that most people don’t have. It was something that was appealing because I think bellybuttons are disgusting.”

Rogue priests deface career From miracle babies, sex scandals, lavish lifestyles to putting their hands on church funds, some preachers seem to have their hands full. Stealing from the church has suddenly turned into a worldwide plague and this is dirtifying the image of the once glorious career. Cases of preachers conning unsuspecting or unquestioning flock are worryingly escalating. The word has been turned into a cash trap. An unholy “career” in pretty packaging, it has proven to be
the easiest way of deceiving your way into riches. No one can judge but the shepherd fattening at the expense of the flock is against the biblical and laws of the land. In November 2013, NTV’s investigative reporter Dennis Okari brought to light the fraudulent ways of phony preachers in his documentary Seeds of Sin. All it takes to amass wads of cash in a day is to strut a gown (preferably white) and a bible in one hand. Scream
the word away to a clue-less congregation and voila! Reporter Okari exposed how God’s name is being used by fake preachers to seize millions from faithful. The church goers fuel the shepherd’s life in the name of “kupanda mbegu” after being promised grand rewards from God. The desperation of the congregation makes them vulnerable and subject to betrayal. It is expected of a multitude to scramble for a price tagged bottle of “holy

water” that is claimed to have healing powers. Okari busted pastors like Thomas Wahome of Helicopter Ministries, Pastor Kanyari and his mother prophetess Nduta who sell “anointed water” that “cures” HIV among worshippers.
In June 2012, a Houston pastor and his wife in USA were jailed for siphoning $430,000 from a congregation. Charles and Adriane Gilford spent the money on gambling in casinos. Perhaps some followers are to blame for

Take advantage of E-material to supplement learning Universities and other higher learning institutions have massive deposits of materials that can benefit a student. The materials are available in downloadable digital format. As you study, compare what you have with what you do not. Even if you have similar material for a topic, authors and sources are different. This means the presentation
is different. David Kamuru, a masters student in Business Administration at Mt Kenya University, has found sites like Free-Ed helpful in linking him with classmates in other universities. It has given him chance to share ideas and experiences around the globe while helping him solve problems his lecturers could not. Some institutions require
you to subscribe first to their site before you can access lecture slides, PDF notes, videos or MP3s for free. “The subscription should not worry you because it is a way of ascertaining that the content provided reaches the target population, students. It is a way of sieving off traffic to these sites for subscribers to benefit most. One such site
is Stanford on iTunes,” says Kamuru. Other sites will allow you to attend classes in different universities at a given time. For instance, Courseware can link you to more than 16 universities. United Nations University offers free virtual content. However, their courses are tailored towards policy and
governance. This does not mean you cannot benefit if you are not in the fields. Annet Atieno, e-learning student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology says joining sites run by student has been resourceful. “Textbook Revolution is such an interesting site where we exchange e-books with
students in Europe, US and other places which are ahead of us technology-wise. I have accessed many books that I could not get at JKUAT,” says the Bachelor of Science in IT scholar. Processing material you receive from the sites will arm you with better skills for excellent results for your degree or diploma.

Passion of the Christ filming was gruelling ‘The Passion of the Christ’ is an American drama directed by controvercial actor, Mel Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ. It tells the story of Christ according to the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The film’s production process was almost as intense as the Passion itself due to a number of technical difficulties, creative differences and clashing personalities. At the time of its release, the film drew the attention of countless critics due to its depiction of violence and torture, following a depiction of the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus. The mvoie, which opens with Christ’s betrayal by Judas, his condemnation by the Pharisees and his appearance before Pontius Pilate, made $83,848,082 (Sh7.3 billion). It went on to earn $370,782,930 (Sh32.1 billion) in the United States. Jim Caviezel, the man who played Jesus Christ, is not new to movie goers, having starred as the main character in TV series, ‘Persons of Interest’. Before taking the role, Mel Gibson is said to have warned Caviezel of the imminent danger his participation had on his future career. “You’ll never work in this town again and acting Jesus might endanger your career,”

Gibson told him. Over a long time, many producers shunned him because of the role. Caviezel went to great lengths to help Gibson make this film, at one time dislocating his shoulder bone.“I remember yelling out at Mel, ‘You obviously don’t care! Here we are breaking our backs for you,’” he said in an interview. “At that point this cross is swaying from one direction to the next, and I’m on a thousand foot cliff. If that thing snaps, I’m toast,” said
Caviezel. After shooting the entire crucifixion scene, they watched it and most of the production team agreed that it was fine, but Gibson was not impressed. They were forced to do it all over again. “And that went on for another five weeks, just the crucifixion scenes alone.” He recalls nearly getting burned on set during a malfunction. “ I was lit up like a Christmas tree. Kiprop eyes Monaco win, unsure of Commonwealth
UNCERTAIN: Kiprop is not sure if he will compete in the Commonwealth Games.
World 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop is eyeing July’s Monaco Diamond League, an event at which he has produced sterling performances before. In last year’s Monaco Diamond League Kiprop set a world leading time of 3.27.72 to better the 3:28.88 he had set the year before. The two time world champion and former Olympic winner is unsure on whether he will compete in the July Commonwealth games. The athlete spoke after leading his team to victory in the Athletics Kenya/ Safaricom Relay in the 4×1,500m event at the Kasarani
Stadium. The police office, upstaged World Indoor 3,000m Champion Caleb Ndiku in a fascinating last lap trademark long strides run, to prove he was the best over that distance. “It great to run in the relays, there is no better way to prepare for upcoming events than relays, through them one is able to gauge is performance while monitoring on areas to improve,” he said. “I am not sure whether I will be running at the commonwealth games, simply because I want to give upcoming runners an opportunity to be recognised,” He said. Coincidentally Common-
wealth honours remain the only major accolades missing in Kiprop’s rich medal cabinet. He won the 1,500m at 2007 All Africa Games in Algeria, 2008 Olympic games in China, 2010 Africa Championships title and went on to win the 2011 and 2013 world titles in Daegu and Moscow respectively. “As a matter of fact I want to so much win the commonwealth games having won silver four years ago, again I can’t rule out myself completely, I got some time to decide. Woods tipped to be all time great World number one Tiger Woods has been tipped for higher glory despite a recent injury setback obstacle that will see him miss the 2014 Masters that teed off today. He won the Masters in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005, and has never missed the event since he made his debut at Augusta National as an amateur in 1995. The star player underwent a back surgery for a pinched nerve that has troubled him for months. Retired golfer Jack Nicklaus still believes Woods will beat his record of 18 majors despite doing great in recent times. Woods, 38, has been stranded on 14 major titles since the 2008 US Open. “I still think he’ll break my record. As long as he is physically able to do it,” Nicklaus said. “I feel bad for Tiger. He has really worked towards the record.” Woods has suffered numerous injuries over the years and has undergone four knee operations as well as having Achilles, neck and back
problems. His career also stalled in the aftermath of his infamous scandal and swing struggles after teaming up with new coach Sean Foley in 2010. However, Nicklaus, who won the last of his majors as a 46-year-old at Augusta, says Woods still has time on his side. “He’s 38 years old and he’s probably got another 10 years at least of being able to compete - that’s 40 more majors to win,” he said. “It shouldn’t be too difficult.” At Woods’s age, Nicklaus had also won 14 majors but he added the 1978 Open Championship later that year as a 38-year-old and won two majors at the age of 40 before his final win at Augusta. “It’s tough right now, but I’m absolutely optimistic about the future,” Woods said last week. “I’ve always said Jack reached his milestones over an entire career. I plan to have a lot of years left in mine,” he said.

Muhoroni coach rues midweek loss Muhoroni Youth head coach Francis Baraza is certain his side had chances to beat Thika United at the City Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams played to a barren draw in one of the eight Kenyan premier league matches played in a mid -week. Baraza undefeated since taking over, has guided his side three wins and two draws, something he said is good progression. “We attacked Thika more making me believe we were the
better side, we did waste chances that could have settled the encounter,” said the former Western Stima coach. “The glorious chasnces from, Ezekiel Otuoma and Jeremiah Wanjala in the first half should have been converted, somehow I feel my side was wasteful,” he said. Baraza however was happy his side did not concede while maintaining their unbeaten run that stretches to five matches. “Coming through was crucial.”
One change as Lionesses go into Africa Cup tourney
At home: The Kenyan team will be hosting the Confederation’s Cup.
Kenya will only have one change in the Africa Rugby Confederation Women’s Sevens Cup to be held at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on April 12. Awuor, who sustained a hairline fracture in Hong Kong, and Janet Okello recovered in time for the tournament. “Of those who had knocks and injuries, only Stacy failed to recover on time. The rest are good and ready to go,” said
Wambua. Kenya is drawn in pool A alongside South Africa, Madagascar and Senegal The local ladies play Madagascar from 10am before taking on Senegal from 12pm. Odds favour Froome after Porte quits Giro d’Italia race Chris Froome’s Tour de France defence got a boost after Richie Porte withdrew from the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday. Froome is the favourite to lift the 2014 edition of cycling’s most famous race. The 101st edition of Tour de France is set to start in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, on
July 5, 2014. The race will feature a stage finish in London before returning to France. Australian Porte has played a key role at Team Sky in recent years and his work as a lead-out man for Bradley Wiggins and Froome has helped them clinch the last two Tour wins.
Porte was set to ride Giro this year in a bid for overall victory but has been sidelined by a gastroenteritis attack. He missed the Tirreno-Adriatico before withdrawing from the Volta a Catalunya. In a bid to get fit for the Tour, he has shelved plans for Giro domination.
Team Sky’s head of performance support, Tim Kerrison, said the decision was designed to give the team the best chance in the Tour. “He played an invaluable role in our Tour wins in 2012 and 2013 and we want him to do the same again this year. “We’re always reviewing our
line-ups and looking how we can best support our riders and give ourselves the best possible chance for success.” Porte will join Froome for the Liege-Bastogne-Liege later this month. Team Sky also revealed that Wiggins would feature at Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix.
