mindless slaughter: A Nyeri businessman claims his life is in danger after a report presented a man with a name similar to his as the coordinator of a network of poachers.

State told to name poaching tycoons A businessman in Nyeri has asked the government to release the full names of poaching kingpins to save his life. The trader claims recent reports by a television station on the menace had left his life in danger. In their latest investigative report,

a local television station named “a certain Muchina” as the mastermind of poaching activities in the country. The report claimed Muchina is the coordinator of a network of gunmen and foreigners involved in the senseless slaughter of elephants and other wild game. The report claimed

the man is based in Central Kenya. But Fredrick Muchina has demanded that the second name of the suspect be revealed to save him from threats to his life, family members and business activities.

“I am involved in legal businesses and I want the report to reveal the full names of the suspect so that residents can know the truth and stop linking me to poaching,” he said. “My business activities are well known and I welcome any investigations against me to verify that I am not in any way involved in

poaching. How can I be involved in destroying our national heritage?” he asked. In the report aired two weeks ago, a Mr Muchina is named as the kingpin of poaching. The reports claimed he enjoys police guard and drives top-of-the-range vehicles and has top connections with senior government officials and politicians.

“The biggest car I have ever driven is a Toyota Kruger. I do not even have a watchman in my home,” he said. He has demanded that the TV station to release Muchina’s second name and his pictures to the public so that the distress he and his family are facing. He said the story has threatened his business, family, and personal

relations. But police spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki said Muchina has not reported his fears to the authorities. Muchina’s pleas come even as Environment Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe sacked five senior KWS officials accused of abetting poaching activities. Wildlife conservationists have asked

the government to step up war against poaching to save game parks from the threat of losing treasured animal species. The high value of rhino horns and elephant tusks in markets in the Far East, including China, have fuelled mindless poaching activities that are said to be funded by international syndicates.

President sacks youth fund boss The National Youth Development Fund chairman Gor Semelang’o has been sacked and a former schoolmate Bruce Odhiambo appointed to replace him. Semelang’o’s sacking appeared in a Gazette Notice dated February 27. “In exercise of powers conferred by section 5 (2) (a) of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund Order, 2007, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces appoint Bruce Odhiambo to be the Chairperson of the Board of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund,” the notice read. President Kenyatta did not explain why Mr Semelang’o was sacked although sources claim he could have lost the post after his relationship with a senior Cabinet Secretary became frosty. Mr Odhiambo is a music producer and events organiser. Semelangó’s sacking came over a year after retired President Kibaki appointed him to the position in January last year. Mr Odhiambo will serve for three years and his appointment will run from March 1. Mr Semelango’s appointment by the immediate former president is said to have been prompted by the support he gave the former leader during his re-election campaign in 2007. Mr Semelango was in the “Vijana na Kibaki” group alongside youthful leaders Yvonne Khamati and Bob Kioko.

Hillary Clinton’s jocular after protestor hurls shoe at her A woman threw a shoe at former First Lady Hillary Clinton as she was giving a speech in Las Vegas. Clinton had just begun talking about recycling when the shoe whizzed by her right ear. The startled former secretary of state flinched and moved to her left, yelling, “Was that a bat!” The shoe was thrown by a blond

woman in a blue dress, who raised her hands as if under arrest as she was hustled out of a meeting room at Mandalay Bay casino resort. Clinton immediately shook off the disruption and continued her speech on metal recycling after making light of the woman’s poor aim. “Is that somebody throwing some-

thing at me? Is that part of Cirque du Soleil?” Clinton joked. “My goodness, I didn’t know that solid waste management was so controversial. Good thing she didn’t news@x-news.co.ke www.x-news.coke facebook.com/XnewsKenya twtter.com/XnewsKenya

English skills gap hurts graduates

cruch time The award of digital licenses and frequencies to the Standard Group Limited, Nation Media Group and Royal Media Services will be determined today by the Supreme Court as the country’s switch from analogue to digital television frequencies inches closer. The court has barred the Pan-African Network Group (Pang), which hosts Star Times television, from taking part in a fresh tendering process. The Consumer Federation of Kenya through has said that Kenyans need more time to be able to purchase set boxes, which will help them view channels on the new frequencies once the digital migration takes place in September. The deadline for the switch has been moved on several occasions to give Kenyans time to prepare themselves. In an earlier statement, the Federation had urged the government to reduce the prices of the set boxes, which range between Sh3,499 and Sh5,000, as they considered it too high for majority of Kenyans.

Lack of communication skills hurts chances of graduates in the job market, a regional communications agency has said. Kuda Nhiwatiwa , the CEO of Learning and Testing Services, said many graduates lack English and oral skills. “The lack of skills makes Kenyan students unprepared for local and international jobs where English and communication skills are necessary,” he said. He was speaking at a forum attended by university officials in Nairobi on Friday. The Last year, the Federation of Kenya Employers raised concern over the quality of graduates from Kenyan universities. It accused the universities of enrolling students without necessary facilities to cater for the high numbers. \

Anti-missile vehicles to boost war on terror The government will acquire anti-missile defence vehicles to boost the war on terror. Deputy President William Ruto says the vehicles, guns and communication equipment have been given priority in this year’s budget. “The anti-missile vehicles are a priority and have been included in this year’s security budget,” said Ruto. The DP said more guns and modern communication equipment will replace the old facilities. More helicopters will be acquired for surveillance in cattle rustling areas. “We will also improve police kitting by acquiring modern guns, armour and communication equipment. We claim to be a digital government, but the current communication kits are still analogue,” he said. Ruto denied claims that police are mistreating suspects detained at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. “Majority of the terrorist attacks have been around Eastleigh and some towns in Northern Kenya. This is why we are focusing on the areas. It is not an issue of

one’s tribe or religion,” the Deputy President said. Ruto said the high number of suspects justified the gazetting of Kasarani Safaricom Stadium into a police station because they could not fit in one centre. He said the recent deportation of illegal immigrants was justified, saying there was nothing wrong with returning people to their homes. The DP said the government has employed a multi-dimensional approach to enhance state security, including proposed salary reviews. Other steps include providing insurance cover to officers for compensation in case of injuries sustained while on duty. “In two months, every officer will have an insurance scheme. In case the officer is injured, or loses life in the line of duty, we will ensure their families are properly compensated,” said Ruto. He said an anti-poaching intelligent unit will soon be set up to ensure quick response. Ruto was fielding to questions from Kenyans on Twitter while reviewing Jubilee’s one year in office.

Top defender: An anti-missile battery. The government will equip police with anti-missile defense vehicles in the continued war on terror.

Goods test lab to cost Sh500million Consumers will next month set up a laboratory to check on dishonest businesses that cheat on product labels. The National Consumer Laboratory will be set up by the Kenya Consumer Protection Advisory Committee (Kecopac) to ensure information on a product packaging is not harmful to consumers. Construction of the Sh500 million facility is set to start in July once funds are provided by Treasury. The committee is made up of nine members whose appointment was confirmed in December 2013. The committee was set up under the Consumer Protection Act, 2012. The committee’s task is to highlight the rights of consumers. Mr Stephen Mutoro, the Kecopac chairman, said the agency has received complaints of cheap goods and will investigate the claims. The Consumer Protection Act of Kenya 2012 stipulates that traders who sell low quality goods and lie on pricing will be required to recall products from the market, repair defects, issue refunds and replace faulty products.

Trying times for Christians in China as churches face demolition In the past week, Christians in China have had their patience tested after communist officials authorised the demolition of a dozen churches claiming that Christianity was becoming ‘excessive.’

The churches mostly located in the eastern province of Zhejiang, one of the country’s Christian-dominated regions, are threatened with demolition as others lose crosses. Others have had lights and

colours toned down to make them less conspicuous. Last week, Christians flocked the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou, a rich port city known as the “Jerusalem of the East” because of its large Christian

community, after its demolition was announced. Communist officials have however denied launching a church demolition movement. Reports indicated that more

than one million of Wenzhou’s nine million residents are thought to be practising protestants with the number on a steady rise. Feng Zhili, the chairman of Zhejiang’s ethnic and

religious affairs committee, said Christianity’s growth had been “too excessive and too haphazard”. China is an officially atheist state that only offers formal recognition to five religions.

Police commanders moved in mini shuffle

Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo has reshuffled senior officers barely a month after some of them were posted to new stations. Former police spokesman and current Njoro OCPD Charles Owino is among four officers who have been transferred in the mini-reshuffle. Owino, who was transferred to Njoro last year, moves to Ndhiwa in Homa Bay to replace George Njoroge who died two weeks ago after illness. Nairobi Central OCPD Fredrick Lai, who was transferred to a new station barely a month ago, replaces Owino in Njoro, while Butere’s Paul Wanjama will replace Lai at Central. Butere’s new OCPD is Josephine Ngetich who has been Wanjama’s deputy Other sources said Owino’s transfer came after a group of leaders from Njoro visited Kimaiyo to complain that Owino has barred them from accessing “their” land. Owino has been embroiled in a tussle with a group of people who are said to be intruders on private farms. The matter has moved to court where Owino was ordered to ensure the intruders do not access the disputed land.

Sampling friends’ Facebook photos can hurt your esteem Spending a lot of time viewing pictures of friends on Facebook is likely to make you insecure about yourself, researchers have warned. A study by UK and US experts says women feel insecure about their body image after perusing pictures of friends on social sites. The study says social media negatively affects self-image. Selfies on social media are said to have a strong influence on how people feel about their appearance. Researchers at the universities of Strathclyde, Ohio and Iowa on 881 female college

students in US showed that negative image comparisons are high. The study showed that women on Facebook compare their bodies with those of friends or celebrities, leading to feelings of insecurity. They view their friends’ body sizes and shapes as better and more perfect than theirs. The researchers said spending more time on Facebook leads to repulsive attitude towards oneself. Petya Eckler of the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow, said spending a lot of time on Facebook does

not lead to eating disorders but is linked to poor body image. The images seen on social media may be unrealistic yet still take a toll on women’s self-esteem. Once self-esteem is lost, confidence diminishes as unnecessary pressure sets in. People start adopting new forms of lifestyles, such as watching weight in the wrong manner, leading to eating disorders and self-destruction. This is mostly seen in many young people who drown in turbulent struggles to gain certain body shapes.

Man owns up to 41 murders in the US A man suspected to have killed nine people in the US surprised investigators when he confessed that he had murdered a total of 40 in a career spanning three decades. Jose Manuel Martinez, 51, confessed to investigators that he carried out up to 40 slayings while working for a drug cartel as an enforcer, a prosecutor said. Errek Jett, district attorney in Lawrence County, Alabama, said they believed Martinez because of the details he gave. Martinez was arrested last year shortly after crossing the border from Mexico into Arizona and sent to Alabama, where he awaits trial on one murder charge. Once word got out, a steady stream of investigators from across the country came to question him. Martinez targeted victims in Tulare, Kern and Santa Barbara counties between 1980 and 2011, Tulare County Assistant District Attorney Anthony Fultz, who filed charges said. Investigators have released details of their case, saying six of the victims were killed in Tulare County, two in Kern and one in Santa Barbara. They ranged in age from 22 to 56, investigators said. One man was shot dead in 1980 driving to work in the morning, while two men were shot in 1982 working on a ranch. One survivived. The same year, another man went missing before being found two days later by ranchers shot and stabbed to death. Yet another was found in 2000 shot to death in bed with his four children at home. In addition to the nine murder counts, Martinez was charged in California with one count of attempted murder and the special circumstances of committing multiple murders, lying in wait and kidnapping.

Chase Bank, Philips in healthcare plan Chase Bank has partnered up with global healthcare innovators, Philips Technologies, to offer a medical equipment funding solution. The move is expected to help improve lives of patients and compliment government ongoing plan to offer quality healthcare to the public. The partnership will support private medical institutions seeking to acquire medical equipment. The government has also been working on plans to roll out a programme that will help en-

sure adequate and specialised treatment to all Kenyans. It hopes to work closely with relevant stakeholders in the healthcare sector to improve livelihoods of Kenyans as indicated in the Vision 2030 development goals. “For healthcare sector to meet the objectives as outlined in Vision 2030, the finance sector must offer solid solutions so as to moderate the adverse effects of poor health care services,” said Chase Bank Director Business Development, Ken Ouko.

Speaking at the signing of the MoU on April 10, 2014, Ouko added: “With the sharp increase in lifestyle diseases, seeking treatment abroad or waiting in long queues in referral hospitals won’t cut it anymore.” The Ministry of Health says Kenya diagnoses 28,000 cases of cancer every year. About 80 per cent of the cases end up in death due to lack of chemotherapy and radiotherapy equipment. “Most financial institutions shy away from venturing into

healthcare. And in case they do invest, it usually comes with rigid conditions making it difficult for the private medical practices to break even in the market,” said Group Finance Director, Phillips Technology, Shailesh Mehta. “This agreement will give hope to the sector. Sh255,419 for pair of mangoes A pair of mangoes was auctioned for Sh255,419 at the Ota wholesale market in Tokyo, Japan. In the fruit’s first auction of the season, the mangoes, known as Taiyo no Tamago (egg of the sun) are grown in southern Japan. They were sold on Thursday to beat a previous auction record of Sh32,393.25 set at last year. The mangoes were set to be airlifted from Miyazaki in the far south of the country to a department store in Fukuoka. The Miyazaki Agricultural Economic Federation, Japan, indicates that for a fruit to be identified as an ‘Egg of

the Sun’, it must weigh at leasst 350 grammes and have a high sugar content. In Japan, fruits are usually costly. A single apple can cost as much as Sh260 while a packet of cherry may cost up to sh8,700 But despite the high auction costs, the sale does not beat the Sh2. 2million cantaloupe melons auctioned in 2008. In Kenya, the mango season starts in October to March. There are a number of varieties but the most common are apple mango and long mango. Supply is usually high to an extent that they are sold at throwaway prices.

Republicans move to frustrate debate on US Equal Pay Bill US Republicans on Wednesday blocked a vote that sought to open debate on the Paycheck Fairness Act. The bill was targeting to stop discrimination on women and hold employers accountable for wage discrimination. In US, women earn 23 per cent less than men earn at the work place. The bill would have required the US Labour Department to collect data on wages from employers that has been broken down by race and gender. The employers would have to show that differences in wage between men and women carrying out similar tasks are over other reasons than sex. The bill fell short of seven of the 60 votes

required to advance in the chamber. History The Equal Pay Act was signed into law by former US President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It states that no employer shall discriminate between employees on the basis of sex. But even after the implementation of the law, women on average are paid 77 cents for every dollar men are paid. It is an improvement from 1963 when women were paid 59 cents for every dollar men were paid. This is the third time the bill has failed to be passed into law. In 2010 and 2011, a similar bill was blocked by the Republicans.

Implications Experts are not sure whether the vote will affect the Republicans’ chances for a Senate win in November. Kelly Dittmar, an assistant research professor at the Centre for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, said: “Republicans have been finding it a challenge to speak to issues that are most important for women. Standing in the way of the Paycheck Fairness Act was not a good impression for the party. I’m not sure if it will hold out that long,” Ms Dittmar said, “but it will at least be another piece that the Democrats use. wI think Republicans are out of touch with women.”

The Institute’s research shows that factors such as income, employment, education, household size and age influence the intake of organic products. Kenyans swill pay up to twice as much for the goods than the conventionally produced items that are made from artificial chemical compounds. Up to 3,000 farmers are involved in selling organic produce at different outlets, providing consumers with limited supply of goods. This has forced retailers to drive up prices of organic products since not all outlets can stock them. The study found that consumers are driven to buying organic products to ensure good health and nutrition. This creates demand for the products. Retailers have responded to the trend by stocking organic foodstuff next to soft drinks and junk food to tap into the market. Groups in Kenya that have attempted to cash in on the sector’s growing popularity include the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN). The NGO is working on linking small-scale farmers with markets. The network plans to help farmers improve on their output, form organisations to help in sales and strengthen value chains and ensure higher profits.

Platform for workers Belbin system workers in to report employers fits proper roles

businesswise

Employees are now able to file complaints about their employers online following the launch of a new platform by the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) and Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU). The website, dubbed the “Wage Indicator”, will allow workers to report employers who are not complying with labour laws on minimum wages. The FKE Chief Executive Officer Jacqueline Mugo said the minimum wage complaint form on the Wage Indicator national website has been fully endorsed by the Industrial Court of Kenya. “Right now our Industrial Courts are flooded with many cases and before your case is addressed, it will take a long time,” Mugo said during the launch of the website. “If we are able to bring the employer and workers together, get a solution faster, it will be much better.” Workers will be able to report their complaints by filling specified details on the form and then FKE and COTU will take up the matter with the employer. “Some of the employers are simply ignorant of the labour laws, some are going through financial difficulties with their enterprises and many other challenges. So when we get to bring the two parties together we will get to know about all these, rather than go the court route,” Mugo said. President Uhuru Kenyatta increased the minimum wage by 14 per cent to system: Wage Indicator is a platform that allows workers to report employers Sh13,674 up from Sh11, 995.

l Belbin Team Roles refer to business management systems used to identify people’s behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the work place. They were developed by Meredith Belbin, a British researcher and theorist best known for his work on management teams. l The Team Roles that Belbin identified in his earlier research in the early 80’s are used by thousands of organisations around the world today. By identifying people’s team roles, a business owner can ensure that their strengths are used to the enterprise’s advantage and their weaknesses are managed in the best way possible. l Belbin’s system groups people into nine specific roles, each with their own key function. l The first ream role to be identified was the plant, a highly creative person who is good at solving problems in unconventional ways. The second role is that of the monitor evaluator, who

who are not complying with laws on minimum wages to relevant authorities.

citymarkets Tomato shortage hits Nairobi markets The price of tomatoes has doubled in the past week. Traders at major markets have attributed the sharp increase in price to a shortage of the commodity being experienced in Nairobi and its environs. Speaking to XNEWS this morning, tomatoe sellers at Muthurwa market said the shortage has to led to prices going up three-fold in some cases. A survey of the traders at the market found that they are now buying a large crate of tomatoes at Sh7, 000 up from 3, 500 and small crate at Sh3, 000 up from Sh800. Nashon Githonga, a tomatoe seller, said the shortage of the produce has been caused by unpredictable climatic

conditions which at times increases of cost of production leaving the tomatoes growers with no option but to spread the cost to consumers. “Our suppliers (farmers) say the cost of production especially price of pesticides and other farm inputs keeps going up, forcing them to increase prices,” said Githonga. Another tomato dealer, Racheal Naliama, says the scarcity and the resultant increase in prices has let to reduced sales. “The prices of tomatoes have been steadily increasing something which discourages customers from buying the produce and since it is perishable we end up incurring huge losses,” said Naliama.

Farmer irrigates field using motorcycle Agatha Wambito a smallholder horticultural farmer in Kieni Nyeri owns motorcycle not exclusively for boda boda taxi business as is the nord today, but to irrigate her farm. Using a simple pump rigged on a motorcyle, she is able to push 40, 000 litres of water to a height of 50 metres, providing much-needed nourishment to her crops. This cost-effective method only uses one litre of petrol to pump the volume of water as compared to other fuel-guzzling pumps that cost up to Sh250, 000 and are beyond the reach of many farmers in the country. Wambito’s pump cost her Sh10, 000 with an extra Sh5,000 for pipes. I t can be installed on the motorcycle at night to operate as a sprinkler. It can also be used to draw water from a well into a tank for use in drip irrigation.

from the Biomechanical and Environmental Engineering Department at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Glittering risks of acrylic finger nails Acrylic nails have been in the beauty industry for quite some time. They are glamorous and appealing to the eye. They nails come in handy when you have trouble growing your own and you want to have that striking look of well-manicured cuticles. They also help if you have a tendency to bite your nails. However, there are health risks that come with having acrylic nails. If fitted properly, artificial nails are not a problem. But if they are used for a long time, they can be. Chemicals Nails are porous. This means that the chemicals used to apply acrylic nails are unhealthy. Some of them include resins and formaldehyde, which can cause cancer. Exposure yourself to the chemicals over a long period can cause you to lose

your nails altogether. You can also have an allergic reaction to the chemicals used while applying the acrylics. Bacteria Sometimes a gap can develop between the acrylic nail and the natural one. If the acrylic nail is hit, it can separate from the natural one. The gap provides a moist, warm environment in which an infection can flourish. An infection might also occur if acrylic nails are too long or too rigid, or if the nails are applied with unsanitary tools. If you develop a nail infection, the natural nail may become thick or ragged and appear discoloured. If this happens the best remedy is to remove the acrylics and let the natural nails grow out.

RAISED EYEBROW: You don’t have to shave the eyebrows clean.

Bald eyebrows not so cool, girls

Shaving off one’s eyebrows and drawing them back on is apparently fashionable these days. However, shaving them off removes a degree of expression, which makes a person look less human and at the same time, emotionless. So why would anybody want to sport such a look? Ladies, there is a better way of shaping your eyebrows while still managing to look classy. The key thing here is shape, not shave. Tweezing, threading and waxing are the best ways for one to get

the perfect eyebrows. Professional stylists can do a good job and understand that only a few of the hairs need to be plucked to give them the right shape. If one intends to do it themselves, then here are a few things they should consider: First things first; which method should they use? Will they tweeze, thread, wax or opt for a razor? Using a razor is dangerous because one may cut themselves while waxing is very painful. Visualize the shape of the

eyebrows. The front of the brow should align with the bridge of your nose. Determine where the brow will peak and where it will end. Before plucking, fill the eyebrows in using an eye pencil. This will help keep you from plucking away too much hair. The eyebrows should be half an inch thick so pluck above the brow and tweeze out any stray hairs. The result will be a pair of beautiful eyebrows, instead of a barren face.

Brothers, this is how not to turn her off Most women love the smell of a good fragranced man. Scientific research suggests scent is huge determinant in the biology of female sexual attraction since women bear a sharper sense of smell than men. A certain smell can trigger mem-

ories and emotions meaning that they are intertwined, given that they are processed in same section of the brain. “Nothing beats the inviting aura of a sweetly masculine scented man,” says Lonah Akinyi. However, some people are allergic to

scents. They must therefore ensure they take intensive baths to avoid pungent body odours. Some women love the musky smell of a man after an intensive workout. But stale sweat can be a major turn off. Work on those abs, shape that sexy beard and wear that Boateng suit, but reek of unpleasant odour next to a lady you want to impress and dude, game over! “I wear cologne but not all the time. My thorough showers keep me smelling good and confident,” said Paul Wambua. Much as some people don’t reek of sweat, a lightly dab of cologne will not hurt. For an all-round impression, spice your game with a light but unique fragrance. It works best when lightly applied on the wrists, base of the neck, on the chest and some at the back of your ears. It’s a little car with a big name, the Mini Cooper. Of course, just like the VW Beatle, there are modern models but the nostalgia of the original versions of these little legends lingers the world over. Locally, the Mini Lovers in Kenya have assumed custody of the memory of this car. The group has grown from an initial membership of five to over 30 members in just two years and an increasing fanbase on facebook. “We were brought together by a common love for our

classic toys,” Eric Muiri the founder of the club told XNEWS. “In the search for spares, which were increasingly difficult to find, I teamed up with five other mini-cooper owners I knew to form a club to help each other in keeping our cars in top-shape,” said Muiri The club, now two years old, helps it members to easily source for spare parts. The appeal of the cars has drawn the attention of corporates. Recently, Nokia branded and paraded the

the little beauties around town. But it is not all about the cars. The group has set out to help the less fortunate members of society. “We recently paid a visit to the Mama Ngina Children’s home and donated food stuff,” Muiri said.

Nairobi drivers have the opportunity to get a head start on the routes they plan to use by accessing live-traffic updates on major roads. Twende Twende a mobile application, designed by IBM’s Nairobi lab, sends free text messages to drivers to help them avoid traffic in the city. The app send motorists free text messages informing them of the traffic conditions on the roads they are on, and recommends route to take to avoid a traffic jam. Users can sign up for the service by dialing *384*3# on their Safaricom line, or by di-

connected to the Airtel network. It bases its recommendations on a central system that uses image recognition algorithms to process the traffic camera feeds and a separate algorithm to predict traffic on streets not covered by the cameras. Users can get recommendations via SMS or on a map interface. Drivers, as well as road users, initiate the query by sending a text message stating the road they want traffic information about. The server then provides feedback by texting the driver about the traffic

Gor Mahia is home, declares defender Gor Mahia defender Godfrey Walusimbi says he feels settled and at home four months after signing with the Kenyan champions. The highly-rated Ugandan left back is thrilled by the unwavering support club fans have offered him ever since he made a debut for K’Ogalo early this year. “At Gor, I feel at home. The kind of support I get while on the pitch is incomparable. My teammates and the fans are so passionate, making playing here an experience,” said the former Sports Villa player. “Every time I step into the pitch, my desire is to give my best. Gladly, we are headed on the right direction as club,” he said. The Ugandan said that the opportunities Gor has given him are hard to come by. “Playing against Esperance of Tunisia (in the African Champions League) was a great honour for me. Despite the huge aggregate defeat, I was happy to have represented my club,” he said. On Wednesday, the defender was named the man of the

match as his team edged KCB 3-2 in a Kenyan Premier League match at City Stadium. Speaking of the match, Walusimbi said it was a close shave

but that he was glad that they carried the day. “We handled it well in the beginning but lost concentration towards the end and that’s why they (KCB) scored

the two goals,” he said. “What matters is that we got the three points which will boost morale going into the next match.”

WALUSIMBI: The Ugandan player says he is very comfortble at Gor Mahia.

Lioness’ manager suspended The Kenya Rugby Union, KRU has suspended the national women’s team manager Doris Mwanzia. Speaking to XSport, Mwanzia said that the suspension was ill-timed as the came when the team was preparing for the Africa Rugby Confederation Women’s Sevens, which kicks off today in Machakos. “I’ve not been told the reasons behind the suspension. I was served with my suspension letter last week and will therefore await my disciplinary hearing set for next week,” she said. “I am not supposed to comment on such matters, first because I don’t know what I am accused of, secondly the case will be heard next week therefore basically ruling me out of talking,” she said. Even as her position was handed to Angela Olum, a former player, Mwanzia says she will be with the team in the tournament since the players need her. Her suspension sparked reactions from players who threatened not to play in the one-day tournament which involves eight countries. The teams have been training at Rugby Football Union of East Africa ground daily as they hope to make an impact in Machakos. Kenya has been drawn in Pool A with defending champions South Africa, Madagascar and Senegal. South Africa, Uganda and Tunisia have been to the Rugby World Cup Sevens. All eyes are on the teams as Africa pushes for inclusion in the IRB Women’s Sevens Series.

Mcllroy targets third Major at US Masters Rory McIlroy is seeking a third major in the 2014 Masters. McIlroy says he has overcome a year that was marred by change in equipment and that he is ready for new challenges. He is in the form that saw him being regarded as heir apparent to Tiger Woods. “Mind, body, equipment, it’s all there. There are no excuses,” McIlroy said. “It’s just about not getting ahead of yourself and just letting all the practice and all the work that you’ve put in come out in your execution, and just get out of your own way.” McIlroy’s success as a young teenager made him the latest in a long line of golfers who were going to challenge Woods. Sergio Garcia or Anthony Kim, anyone? And as the 2012 season ended, he appeared on the verge of fulfilling that promise. The Northern Irishman had won

the PGA Championship, his second major and one of four wins that year, and finished atop the rankings and the money list. He also delivered a key point on the final as Europe rallied to retain the Ryder Cup. But McIlroy struggled after switching to Nike equipment as part of a massive endorsement deal. He spent the entire 2013 season trying to cope and finished without a win for the first time since 2009. He only collected five top-10s. “It makes it easier these days when you have two majors in the bag,” said McIlroy, who turns 25 next month. “Not that you don’t care as much, but it’s not the end of the world. You know that you will have more opportunities.” McIlroy has never finished better than 15th at Augusta National. And that came in 2011 after one of the more epic collapses in Masters History.

Why Nandwa had to go

FIRED: James Nandwa’s feted by GOtv. He was fired folwing a string of poor performances.

The question was not whether former AFC Leopards coach James Nandwa was going to be sacked, but when. Cometh the day comet the hour, Thursday afternoon the club hierarchy finally wielded the big axe. So Nandwa is gone barely five months after signing a two-year deal with the club he guided to the 2013 Gotv Shield Cup victory. Nandwa definitely had it coming after Leopards lacklustre performances which have resulted just four wins out of 14 matches this season. The 1-0 loss to newly promoted side Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on Wednesday was the final straw. So the race is on to try and salvage the Leopard’s season in which they also celebrating 50-years of existence. Goalkeeper trainer Washington Muhanji will take over on interim basis with the club expected to unveil new foreign coach in the coming week. Muhanji will lead the team against Nairobi City Stars over the weekend. Club secretary general George Aladwa, asked the fans to be patient while the management tries to find an able replacement for Nandwa. “After a detailed meeting, we have decided to relieve Coach James Nandwa, assistant Mickey Weche and Team

Manager Francis Xavier of their duties with immediate effect. We shall be unveiling a new coach next week. Goalkeeper trainer Muhanji will take charge of the team this weekend,” Aladwa said. “I call upon fans for patience and urge them to turn out in large numbers to support the team in our next match against City Stars in Mumias.” It has been a rough ride for Nandwa with fans calling for his sacking few matches into the 2014 season. Scenes of Nandwa being escorted out of the stadium by police as fans bayed for his blood have been the hallmark of Leopards home games in the past two months. An abject performance that saw Ingwe eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup in the second round by South African side SuperSports United FC was another underlying factor behind his sacking. Leopards are 10th on the KPL standings with 10 points. Nandwa joined the Leopards technical bench last year replacing Belgian Luc Eymael who was also sacked following a series of unconvincing results. Nandwa said he quit for the benefit of the club. “Results were not coming our way. I had project and target at the club, sadly some decisionhave to be made for the betterment of the club,” he said.

Ulinzi needed 630 minutes nearly seven hours of – and three coaches to finally register their first league win of the season but coach Robert Matano was nonetheless a happy man. Salim Ali went five matches without a win and stepped down for Francis Onyiso whose interim tenure yielded one defeat. Then came Matano who could only manage a draw in his first game before finally beating Western Stima 1-0 at Mumias for the soldiers to their first win, eight weeks into the new Kenya Premier League season. A goal by Stephen Waruru on stroke of half time at the Afraha Stadium on Wednesday is all the soldiers need to end to end their lean run. Matano admitted the team has sighed collective sigh of

Kenya scales up Fifa rankings Kenya is ranked 106 in the latest Fifa rankings which were released on Thursday. This is a three-point move from the slot occupied last month. Neighbours Uganda dropped one place to 86 but remains the highest placed nation in the East African region. Other neighbours Tanzania are ranked 122nd. The status quo was preserved at the top, with the top 14 remaining unchanged. Spain retains a comfortable lead as Europe occupies the top three places. Portugal climbed to third place behind leaders Spain and Germany. FKF president Sam Nyamweya is upbeat that the country will enjoy better ranks in coming months, saying the federation is determined to ensure progression of the team. “The federation has the mandate to ensure Kenyan football improves. The rankings do speak a lot in relation to positions,” he said. “The U-20 team will be in action next week and positive results are likely to improve our rankings. We have a target of surpassing the alltime best of 68 witnessed in 1998,” Nyamweya said. PERFORMERS: Harambee Stars players celebrate a goal. Wilshere groans under Arsenal saviour tag Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere admits he feels the pressure of being labelled English football’s saviour. The 22-year-old Arsenal playmaker is close to making a return for his club to give his World Cup hopes a boost with some much needed game time.Jack Wilshere admits he feels the pressure of being labelled the ‘next big thing’ for England. Like Paul Gasgcoigne, Paul Scholes

and Wayne Rooney before him, the Arsenal man has long been touted as the saviour of English football. Fabio Cappello gave a 19-year-old Wilshere his international debut and he repaid the Italian with a composed display well beyond his years. But a succession of unfortunate injuries for club and country have since hampered his progress.

But he is adamant he can handle all the attention the tag brings. “I’m not sure it’s unwanted pressure,” he told RWDmag.com. “I think when you play at the highest level, there is pressure all the time.” Wilshere is currently receiving treatment for a broken bone in his foot and will not feature for the Gunners in their FA Cup semi-final against holders Wigan.
