under guard: Armed police officers escort suspected illegal immigrants arrested during the ongoing police operations to weed out illegal immigrants at the sprawling Eastleigh estate in Nairobi. More than 200 suspects were arrested in an operation in South C estate on Monday night.

More than 200 people were arrested last night in South C as the ongoing Operation Usalama Watch moved to other estates in city. Police spokesman Masood Mwinyi said the suspects did not have

valid identification documents to show their nationality. “They could not convince our officers on the ground and that is why we opted to take them for further screening,” said Mwinyi. “We suspect their being here is illegal

be escaping from the operation in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area. The operation was launched following two successive terror attacks in Likoni and Eastleigh. The government then vowed to crackdown on all illegal immigrants in the country with the aliens being blamed as top sympathisers of the terrorists. Somalis, Ethiopians and South

Sudanese nationals are the majority of those who have been hounded up in the police swoops. Last week, the government deported 82 Somali nationals after they were found to have been in the country illegally. Another 60 are reportedly on queue awaiting deportation to Somalia and Ethiopia. The operation has however attracted much condemnation with

Muslim politicians and human rights activists calling for the upholding of human rights. Their pleas were echoed by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees which also implored Kenya to respect the rights of asylum seekers even as it move to address the challenge of insecurity posed by terror groups.

Commonwealth Games gold, silver medals put on display The medals to be competed for in the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in July have been unveiled. The gold, silver and bronze medal, each weighing 100g, were unveiled on Tuesday at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, just 100 days to the opening of the tournament. More than 1,380 medals will be awarded at 261 ceremonies during the games. About 6,000 athletes and officials will take part in the games which will officially opened in a ceremony at Celtic Park on July 23 and end on August 3. Glasgow 2014 chairman Lord Smith of Kelvin has said the remaining 100 days will be for final works on the event’s planning. “We are entering the home straight and the last 100 days are our opportunity to do the final work necessary to ensure we deliver an outstanding Games for Glasgow, Scotland and the Commonwealth.” Olympic 800m champion David Rudisha, who will run in the Diamond League in Doha, is optimistic that he will take part in the Commonwealth. “I hope to run in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games. However, before that I am pleased to be back running in the Diamond League meetings,” said Rudisha. Also expected to feature in the games is star javelin thrower Julius Yego.

Only yesterday, Christian clergymen called on the government to be humane in the exercise. Both the deputy president William Ruto and Interior cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku have maintained that the operation will continue until the government is sure it has gotten rid of all terror suspects and their sympathisers.

Rivals smell deal in Sh25b Sinai tragedy payout talks There is hope for the 856 Sinai fire tragedy victims that they may secure a Sh25 billion compensation after a court was told talks between rival parties are almost closing on a deal. Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi had filed a case seeking compensation of the survivors and families that lost loved ones in the 2011 tragedy. But after graphic video clips

were played in court during the hearing, Judge David Majanja adjourned the case and ordered parties involved to agree on an out-of-court settlement. And during hearings on Wednesday, lawyers for victims said the talks are proceeding well and parties are close to reaching a deal. “The parties involved are already negotiating in line with Article 159 of the Dispute Resolution,” the vic-

Private varsities to enroll state sponsored students The stage is set for private universities to enrol government-sponsored students. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), which replaced the Joint Admissions Board (JAB), has asked private institutions interested in registering government sponsored to make their applications before Saturday. Chief executive of the Commission of University Education Prof David Some said registration is not forceful but parties willing to register will be required to pay a membership fee of Sh100, 000 and Sh70, 000. The move is expected to counter the shortage of spaces for qualified individuals in public universities and expand privately funded institutions. Some of the 123,365

students who performed well will be able to join private universities such as Strathmore and Daystar with the government set to cater for tuition fees. There will be a stakeholders’ workshop next Tuesday in Nairobi to draw up an admission criteria for the new entry procedure. A funding board will be tailored to calculate the average cost of each degree programme. Students who opt to join private institutions will be sponsored by the state according to the courses they pursue. Private universities are expected to submit to the government the lists of courses they offer and the number of slots available. Those who choose to proceed with studies will receive a list of all chartered universities in Kenya to elect their choice cathOLic University LectUre haLL: Private Universities have been asked to send applications for consideration in admission of government sponsored students. courses.

Kenyatta, First Lady back home President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret returned home this morning after being away for almost a week. The first Lady was in London where she participated in the 2014 edition of the London Marathon to raise money for her Beyond Zero campaign against maternal child deaths while the President was on an official visit to Turkey from where he flew to London to support his wife on at her historic charity run. The plane carrying the first couple and ththeir three children touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after 6am. They were received at the airport by Deputy President William Ruto, Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Julius Karangi and other senior government officials including Interior Cabinet Secrertary Joseph Ole Lenku. The President inspected a guard of honour mounted by a detachment of the Kenya Air Force before he was entertained by choirs and groups of cultural dancers.

Kabogo axe threat for contractors Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has warned rogue contractors that they will be blacklisted for shoddy road works. Kabogo said most contraction companies have been fleecing the public by doing shoddy works that do not last. “We will blacklist the companies and investigate them. The people of Kiambu must get value for money,” he said. He vowed to follow up on the companies even if they change names. Kabogo was speaking during a tour of roads under repair in Githunguri constituency. Kabogo said Executive Member for Roads Njeri Mburu will inspect roads before payments are made. He urged resident to shun demonstrations over tax and instead engage in dialogue. He said taxes will fund service delivery. “The next time somebody tells you to demonstrate due to taxes, engage him in dialogue,” he said.

HONEST TAXPAYER In a bid to reduce the accumulation of unpaid Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds worth close to Sh30 billion, the Kenya Revenue Authority has embarked on a new system of rewarding honest taxpayers. The Authority plans to give them the first priority in terms of payment. The Kenya Association of Manufacturers says the new system dubbed ‘Authorised Economic Operator will help discourage unethical behaviour when it comes to paying taxes. “This system is just a means through which tax payers with integrity are being recognised

and rewarded by the taxman,” said Association Chairman, Polycarp Igathe. “The major beneficiaries are those taxpayers who have earned a lot of trust from the taxman.” The National Treasury has noted that the huge backlog of the unpaid VAT refunds is as a result of the slowed process of auditing claims. “The challenge is with the auditing process. It will take a while because there are so many people asking for the VAT refunds. It is just a question of speeding up the auditing process,” says Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

Obama urges Putin to rein in Ukraine separatists Obama urges Putin to rein in separatists US President Barack Obama has urged his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to use his influence to make separatists in eastern Ukraine stand down. The phone call between the two leaders came as pro-Rus-

sian activists continued to occupy buildings in eastern towns. For his part, Mr Putin rejected accusations of Russian interference, calling the reports “unreliable”. EU foreign ministers said on Monday they would expand a list of names targeted by sanctions. Tension has

been steadily rising since Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula, formerly part of Ukraine, last month. The move, condemned as illegal by Kiev and the West, followed the ousting of Ukraine’s pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych in February.

The White House said the conversation between the two presidents was made at Russia’s request. “The president expressed grave concern about Russian government support for the actions of armed, pro-Russian separatists who threaten to undermine and destabilise

the government of Ukraine,” a statement said. “The president urged Putin to use his influence with the pro-Russian groups to convince them to depart the buildings they have seized.” The statement also threatened Moscow with wider sanctions.

All Schools to get power lines for laptop project The government will in the next year connect the entire country to power supply as a way of supporting the laptop project. Information Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the entire country will be connected to the central supply of the Fibre Optic National Network by the end of the next financial year. “We have completed the second phase of laying of the cable. By the end of the next financial year, the entire country will be connected to the main supply so that the county governments can move the cables to schools,” said Matiang’i. He said the government decision to give laptops to primary school pupils will introduce technology at early

stages of learning. This will match developed countries where children have access to computers at five years of age. In Kenya, most people access computers at age 19. Dr Matiang’i said the government is working to feed the national grid with 5000 Megawatts of electricity for connection to schools. He said the country is in dire need of ICT to support devolution and improve processing and management of data in other sectors of the economy. “Devolution needs ICT to programme, run and sustain services in the counties. We must achieve this if devolution is to succeed,” the CS said. He challenged universities and colleges to fill gaps that have not been addressed. He

learning because of the wallless classes, where comparing notes between schools in diverse geographical areas will be a common practice,” he said.

Marry and pay less in insurance premiums Married people pay less premiums compared to their single counterparts, an insurance firm has said. Ibrahim Oyiengo, the personal finance advisor of Old Mutual Assurance Kenya said unmarried people are seen as inexperienced, reckless and therefore prone to accidents hence the high premiums charged. They are also seen as emotionally immature. “Married women pay less insurance compared to those who are not married because they enjoy a tax relief given to them by the government, unlike single women,” Oyiengo said.

“Also, a single person pays more premiums since he is exposed to more risks compared to a married persons who can easily spread the risk against each other. For example if a thug invaded a house of married couple he may end up killing the man and leaving the wife,” explains Oyengo. “Couples have insurable interest on the life of each other.” The level of responsibility of the married ones also determines the rate of premiums to be paid and this increases the premium rates to the unmarried. “Married persons have responsibilities

attached to them and so would think twice before over indulging in hazardous lifestyles that would expose them to more risks,” he added. The young are also liable to pay more insurance premiums than those who are older. In the case of car insurance, the experienced drivers pay less because of fewer risks. “In insurance, age, gender, property, marital status among other factors determine the rate of premiums to be paid,” he clarified. The good news is that insurance companies consider females to be better

drivers, so young single females still pay less in insurance than young single males. Young men are believed to be careless and are likely to over-indulge in practices like alcoholism leading to carelessness. “The entire process of underwriting how much a person should pay depends so much on a number of factors. Persons for example who are exposed to hazardous lifestyles would definitely have to pay more premiums, health status, age, occupation among other factors,” said Oyengo.

Marathoner dies after collapsing at the London race A 42-year-old man died after collapsing at the finish line of the London Marathon, organisers said. Robert Berry had been given medical attention immediately after finishing the race but was pronounced dead at hospital. A spokeswoman for Virgin Money, the event’s organiser, said: “The organisers of the Virgin Money London Marathon would like to express their sincere condolences to

the family and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them at this difficult time.” Mr Berry was running the marathon to raise money for the National Osteoporosis Society, according to his Just Giving page. He wrote that he decided to support the charity after his mother was diagnosed with the condition when she was 52, following an injury several

years earlier. On his website, he provided details of his training in the run-up to the marathon. Within hours of his name being announced after his death the number of donations topped 1,500, rising from 65, and by Monday night more than £19,000 (Sh2.8million) had been donated, surpassing the £1,700 (Sh250,000) target he had set for himself. Among those running for charity were

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta who completed the 42km race in seven hours. She is raising money for her Beyond Zero campaign which is seeking to raise funds for 47 mobile clinics in each county to reduce maternal child deaths. More than 1,200 volunteers from St John Ambulance lined the streets and medical staff advised runners to take on plenty of water and keep well hydrated as the race got under

way under near-cloudless skies. Temperatures of 11C (51.8F) were recorded at the start of the race in Greenwich at 10am, but as runners made their way around the 26.2-mile course through the capital the bright sunshine and lack of a breeze made conditions feel considerably warmer. By the time runners reached the finish line, temperatures reached 16C . (60.8F), the highest anywhere in the UK.

It’s fresh registration order for 42m Kenyans. In what could be the biggest investment by the State to curb terrorism and insecurity, the Government now intends to register all Kenyans afresh in a national digital database. The database would contain biometric details of all persons...

Insurance brokers take blame for failing sector Insurance brokers have admitted that their skills may be too old for the current consumer environment. The Association of Insurance Brokers of Kenya (AIBK) has challenged the brokers to embrace modern technology and innovation to adapt to changing customer needs. Following signs that some of the practices are unfair to consumers, AIBK has urged the brokers to apply ethical practices that go beyond the minimum legal requirements. “It is time we took a look at ourselves and recognise our role in the low penetration of insurance in the country,” said AIBK Chairman Muchemi Ndungu after he was re-elected for a second two-year term. “Individualism, lack of sufficient training of personnel and a poor adoption of technology are just some of the reasons why an industry that should be thriving continues to stagnate,” he said. Insurance penetration stands at three per cent with most Kenyans suspicious of an industry with a poor track record, especially in

claims settlement. The brokers said the industry suffers low public awareness on how they operate. “With approximately 170 brokers

in the market, competition is high. We may need to rethink our working strategy and build more strategic alliances with local and regional players,” Muchemi said.

“We call for harmonisation of insurance laws among member countries if a favourable business environment is to be achieved.”

The facilities which have been designed by Symbion, an architectural firm in Nairobi, will also include two basement parking levels. This will boost the centre’s capacity by 700 cars, almost doubling its current space. East Africa’s largest shopping mall has been working towards meeting the needs of surrounding areas in northern Nairobi. The idea is to boost the city’s growing commercial and residential diplomatic district. Previous expansions have included the Tribe Hotel, the city’s first luxury boutique guesthouse and one of the “World’s Top 100 Hotels”, according to a survey dubbed ‘The Robb Report’. The Village Market recently introduced 150 more parking spaces and over 20 retail outlets. It

Cordaid Fund a boost for fragile areas

Cordaid Investments, a group that creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, has developed a fund that provides capital, fuel job creation and boosts growth in Kenya. The Fragile Nations Fund targets vulnerable parties with little or no means of funding their enterprises. “We will be offering a mix of instruments,” said Director of Cordaid Investments, Laure Wessemius-Chibrac, earlier this month. “Loans alone will not do the trick. There is a need to mix grant-based funding with investments to support the development of small and medium businesses (SMEs).” Applicants are advised to contact info@ cordaid.nl for more details. “Among the many challenges, fragile nations lack capital for entrepreneurs,” said Wessemius-Chibrac. “Take Kenya for example. Rural provinces in north east of the country are plagued by internal conflicts. As a result major investors neglected the region. Now that the political situation is stabilising, it takes time for major investors to return.” “We just completed an extensive field survey with responses from counterparts in Kenya, Haiti, DRC Congo, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Central African Republic (CAR) and Ethiopia,” she says. “This showed how our Fragile Nations Fund needs to be embedded in local situations.”

Poland probes GlaxoSmithKline over corrupt practices The United Kingdom (UK) based pharmaceutical and healthcare company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is under investigation over allegations of corruption in Poland. A GSK regional manager and 11 doctors have

been charged for bribery between 2010 and 2012. A former sales representative of the pharmaceutical company said that doctors were paid to promote the company’s asthma drug, Seretide. Another former sales representative

said they even paid doctors for lectures that never happened, which would lead to a greater number of prescriptions. The doctors were allegedly paid, £100 (Sh14, 503) and the sales men then told the doctors that

they expected more than 100 prescriptions for that drug. If the company is found guilty, they will have breached the UK Bribery Act and the United States of America Foreign Corrupt Practices Act which prohibits companies based in

either country to bribe government employees abroad. The drug company has said that it has disciplined one employee and is cooperating with the investigations. In July, Chinese authorities accused the company

of conveying up to Sh41.9 billion to doctors and officials to persuade them to use their drugs. The company faced such similar charges in Iraq. The pharmaceutical company has a presence in African countries including Kenya.

Bidco plans expansion into new product range Bidco, one of Kenya’s leading consumer goods manufacturers, has announced plans to invest in a new line of products as it diversifies into making food and hygiene products like toothpaste. The company plans to set up factories which will be geared towards increasing their product range. “We are ramping up our agricultural activities in East Africa,” said Managing Director Vimal Shah. “We are looking at sunflower and Soya beans on a massive scale.” He said that youth unemployment could be overturned by African governments by training and exposing the youth to the rest of the world. “We have got to turn it around,” he said, noting that stakeholders should see the problem as an opportunity instead of a challenge. Bidco has said that it will invest about $200 million (Sh17.4 billion) by 2017 in new product categories to meet a growing demand among consumers.

“It is demand-led,” said Shah during the official announcement late last week. “It is a consumption story,” He

attributed the investment plan to growing demand for consumer goods, which is projected to rise further

Kenya’s Sh1bn cashewnut potential untapped The cashewnut industry employs about 60,000 people directly through farming but has the potential to create more jobs, says the Ministry of Agriculture. The country currently produces about 10,000 metric tonnes of nuts per year worth Sh264.9 million. However, it has a potential to produce more than 63,000 metric tonnes valued at Sh1 billion. The sub-sector has the potential to give the government billions of shillings through exports. The sector faces the key challenge of low producer prices which has left farmers

disillusioned to the point of cutting down their trees. Processors have been selling the nuts at Sh45 per kilogram but farmers who are unable to deliver the crop to collection centres are forced to sell their crop for as little as Sh20 from middlemen. In 2009,

the government decided to regulate the exportation of raw cashew nuts. The move followed a ban on the export of unprocessed nuts as a way of encouraging the development of local industries, processing factories and job creation. The government has

already set up measures such as the provision of spraying equipment and training on cashew nut management to farmers in a bid to revive the industry. The Nut Processors Association of Kenya says that production will quadruple by 2015.

UNEXPLOITED RESOURCE: Kenya can in one year produce 63,000 metric tonnes of cashewnuts worth Sh1 billion, but only does 10,000 metric tonnes of nuts per year worth Sh264.9 million.

the next ten years as soon as it takes full advantage of the growth opportunities that are available. Kenya’s popula-

tion of about 40 million is expected to rise by 50 per cent within the next 16 years, Shah explained.

Food prices to remain stable The prices of consumer goods are expected to remain stable until June, according to information from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. As the cost of manufacturing food products went down by 1.4 per cent, consumer prices are likely to hold steady for the next few months. l “The overall producer prices increased by 0.47 per cent in the first quarter of 2014 compared

to 0.37 per cent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2013,” said the bureau. l The average cost of production went up by 0.47 per cent between January and March. The cost is measured through the Production Price Index (PPI), a unit which is used as an indicator for inflation by monitoring price movements at the factory level before they spill over to retailers.

In such high profile professions, individuals face mounting stress because many expect nothing but the best from them. To discard such duress they lean to a sniff and needle to cover up their anxiety. “After getting hooked on prescription drugs but swap them for hard narcotics like heroin or cocaine which are believed to give a more powerful high,” Moses Munene, a registered nurse and a facilitator at Action Aid told

XNews. Last year, Jimwat ( real name James Wathigo Mburu), the sensational singer of the ‘Under-18’ hit, was reported to be hooked on drugs. It’s said he was taken to rehab in Germany but relapsed on return. After a second stint in rehab he is now back on the path to recovery. Bongo star Ray C is also a recovering addict. At one point it took the intervention of Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete to help her get treatment. On an international scale, the number of celebrities enslaved by drugs is mind-boggling. Lindsay Lohan has been in

and out of rehabilitation but her last session seems to have worked because she is said to be clean up to date Because of such harmful habits, the world has seen the stumble of its best entertainers. Those who are brave or lucky enough get help to beat the habit. Sadly, not all have the will power to accept defeat and seek help. Such end up in horrible conditions and eventually die a shell. In 2012, the world could not come to terms with the death of Whitney Houston who accidentally drowned due to atherosclerotic heart disease worsened by cocaine use.

talent spotters

MYSA a pioneer in talent development Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) Academy has been a key player in talent spotting for more than 20 years now In 1987, Bob Munro then a Nairobi resident watched children from the Mathare slums of Nairobi playing football with a ball made out of plastic bags. The feelings of sympathy and concern drove Munro to start what is called MYSA today. Some of the best players Kenya has ever produced have gone through Mathare Academy that is known for spotting young talented but unlucky kids in various fields. Speaking about MYSA, former France Player Marcel Desailly once said: “I have seen where these young kids come from and it’s a credit to them

and MYSA that many of them are able to turn their lives around.” MYSA, by using sports as the linking element, has shown how it is possible to create heroes on the field while at the same time creating leaders and role models off it. Joe Acholla (25-year old politician), Dennis Oliech (Kenya’s most celebrated striker) and Charity Muthoni who is the chair-elect of one of MYSA’s committees are the representatives of MYSA’s motto: “Giving youth a sporting chance.” This is because they have come through the Mathare sports fraternity. Mathare United Football Club, a professional offshoot of MYSA, was established in 1994 to inspire youth and showcase Mathare talents nurtured and groomed.

Wahu’s teeny-weeny afro

TRENDSETTER: Wahu has made the blonde afro her signature look, in the process popularising it.

Wahu Kagwi is without a doubt one of Kenya’s leading female vocalists. Other than being a leading female musician, she is also a fashionista, which people can tell from the outfits that she wears on her music videos, but it is her hair that sets her apart. Long before going natural on hair became the ‘new cool’, she was already miles ahead. Wahu popularised the tweeny weeny afro (TWA) hairstyle in the country. The hairstyle is short natural hair that has been curled to resemble short dreadlocks. She was spotted with it in her concerts and music videos, which lead to the growing of a trend among many young girls. She took her hairstyle a notch higher by dying it blonde. Although she changes the colour from time to time from blonde, to brown and even deep red. It has since become her become her trademark look and what many of Kenyan music fans identify her with.

THREE’S COMPANY: The Elani trio of Wambui Ngugi, Brian Chweya and Maureen Kunga.

As time passes, Kenyan soil unleashes top notch bands with ecstatic performances in the music industry. Last November, Kenya woke to the sound of the party jam Jana Usiku playing on the airwaves. Suddenly, the whole of Nairobi was abuzz with Elani’s first single on their lips. The song beat an overnight record to become the year’s best track and tossed its makers into proper spotlight. Elani is an Urban Afro band that started off as a five-member acapella group which sang under various names. Now it’s a threesome of Wambui Ngugi, Maureen Kunga and Bryan Chweya. The students met at the Alliance Francaise and

immediately hit it off. The band is an ambassador for CATSI Kenya (Cancer Awareness and Treatment Support Initiative) which was launched by Nairobi International School in 2009 as the main project of the school’s corporate social responsibility programme. Their songs like, Milele released this year also gave them farther instant music charts domination. Then there is the Threat Band which comprises Richard ‘Reechie’ Wandati (drummer), Tito Monako (bassist), Ben ‘Gittx’ Gitau (keys) and Benjamin Kabaseke (guitarist). The Afrojazz group is widely known for their prowess in injecting an African feel in

their performances. Some of the songs produced by the band are multilingual, featuring Swahili and other languages like Luo. The Masikini Masokela singers have shared the stage with international and local musicians like Javen (US), Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe, Kirk Franklin, Neema Ntalel ,Kanji Mbugua and Juliani. In 2012,they performed at the star studded Safaricom live tour in Edoret. This was followed by the award of band of the year accolade last December at the Xtreem Awards. A goat-eating party crucial in blessing a Kamba marriage Throwing a goat-eating party known as Ntheo is a precussor for marriage among the Kamba. Sadly, you cannot count yourself engaged or married without it in this community. Veronica Mbithe, 67, says it is the earmarking ceremony confirming that a woman engaged. The ceremony involves a few members and relatives of both families. Ntheo officiates a relationship even when a couple has stayed together for long without formal solemnisation according to the Kamba customary law. An odd number of billies, three, five, seven and so on, are presented to the parents of the bride for Ntheo. Once the groom slaughters one of the he-goats and blood is spilt on the ground, the groom now officially owns the bride. The bride is bound to the groom when they share Kikonde, a piece of soft meat from the slaughtered goat. Kavulu, a traditional liquor, graces the stomachs of men while while women and children are showered

with soft drinks during the party. The Ntheo ceremony preceeds dowry negotiations, locally known as Ngasya. The two families engage each other. Ngasia can be paid at once or in installments, but it must be completed. A bride price can be as high as 48 goats, two drums of Ithembe (honey), a blanket and other items as they may agree during negotiation. A very big goat known as Ndua itaa is offered to the parents to signify the replacement for the departing ‘goat’. Then the wedding is given a greenlight to proceed. ‘Come we stay’ plans can be legitimised by Ntheo. The parents of the man send a group of elders to the now illegitimate wife’s home to report that, “We have your missing goat”. This alone kickstarts formalisation of the marriage through traditional, church or civil wedding. The Kamba practised circumcision in both boys and girls, although with modernity girls are no longer ‘cut’.

HoMe of arTefaCTS: The Murumbi gallery holds arts collections, (inset), former Vice President Joseph Murumbi.

Murumbi, the avid art addict

Joseph Murumbi was Kenya’s first foreign minister and vice president during the era of first president, Jomo Kenyatta. Not many people know that he was also an avid art collector. Together with wife Sheila, they collected artefacts, postage stamps, jewellery, rare books and textiles. With time, their collection became one of Africa’s extensive art collections. His collection of rare books was considered to be over 50,000. In 1972, together with his

artshock

friend and partner Alan Donovan, he set up the African Heritage Ltd which became the largest Pan- African art gallery on the continent. In 1976, Murumbi sold much of his collection of art and historical books to the government. He later sold his Muthaiga House to the government on condition that it would be turned into an Institute of African Studies. Sadly this was not to happen as the government subdivided the land to developers.

Murumbi died in 1990 of a heart attack with Sheila passing on a decade later. They both left no will and with no known relatives in Kenya, the Murumbi’s art collection was to be shipped to England to Sheila’s second cousins. The timely intervention of former Vice President Moody Awori after consultation with Murumbi’s friend Alan Donovan stopped a big chunk of the collection from being shipped out of the country. Part of the art collection was stored at the National

Museums of Kenya and the Kenya National Archives. The collection soon found a home in the Nairobi Art Gallery which was chosen as its final resting place. The 100-year gallery that is at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue/Uhuru Highway once served as PC’s office building where births marriages and deaths were recorded. It was commonly referred to by the British colonialists as the Hatches, Matches and Dispatches’ office.

Tuck into that ugali with sukuma When it comes to Kenyan food, there is that one dish that will always remain a favourite; Ugali, sukuma wiki and meat. This is an example of a food combination that that goes down well and leaves one feeling fully satisfied. First the ugali has to be cooked to perfection, not too soft or too hardjust perfect. Check out the sukuma wiki from your grocer to ensure it is fresh. The ones with a bit of yellow on them, have a bitter taste and those that are pale green are not yet mature thus the will not have the desired taste. They have

to be dark green. The meat can be of any variety – beef, pork, goat or mutton - depending on one’s preferences but it has to be cooked to perfection. Some people prefer to use cutlery when eating ugali and there is really no problem with that only that if there is a person from Western and Nyanza, he/she is likely to find it amusing. No offense, but it is funny because people from these parts of Kenya find it incomprehensible that anyone can eat this food using a spoon. To them, tucking into ugali is handson affair.

STAPLE: Ugali, sukuma wiki and meat is a simple favourite Kenyan dish.

Casu Marzu cheese a delicacy full of maggots Casu Marzu is a traditional Sardinian cheese that contains insect larvae. The maggots are deliberately introduced to the cheese to create Casu Marzu, a delicacy considered to be an aphrodisiac. The dish first starts as pecorino, a hard Italian cheese made from sheep’s milk. After the pecorino cheese has

been cured, the top of the cheese is cut open and it is left outside to attract cheese flies which lay eggs in the cheese. The eggs then hatch into maggots, which burrow into cheese. The cheese is considered unsafe to eat when the maggots are dead so that means it has to be eaten with the live maggots. After the cheese has fermented

enough, it is cut into thin strips and spread on bread and served with strong red wine. Diners are advised to close their eyes when eating the cheese because maggots are known to leap to a height of six inches. To eat the Casu Marzu, one has to hold their hand over the cheese to prevent the maggots from leaping.

If a diner does not chew the maggots properly, there can be dire consequences. The maggots have powerful mouth hooks which can burrow through intestinal walls and stomach linings. The cheese was declared illegal in Sardinia by officials but this hasn’t stopped locals from eating it.

good work, boys Gor Mahia Coach Bobby Williamson is proud of his players for ending Nakuru jinx P.15

Timbe was tactically right against Tusker

Tactics were spot on as former Kenyan Premier League champions, Sofapaka, ended Tusker’s unbeaten run to the season with a 4-2 win at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday. Coach Sam Timbe acknowledged the extra work his players endured going to the clash against table toppers. It resulted in the exciting six-goal thriller. “As I have been saying for a while our problem is not players but failing to take chances and consistency. On Sunday all that was in order as we got a big result,” Timbe said. “Tusker is a big team that is why we took quite relatively more time preparing for this match, the players wanted victory so, I think they were hungry and angry for victory.” “At the back of our heads, as we were preparing for the match, we did bear in mind they bundled us out of the Top 8 and also

the fact that they top of the league, said the Ugandan. “We knew victory was going to take us to the top three and that is why we were all attack minded.” On Sunday, Danson Kago netted the first hat-trick of the season to put the Batoto ba Mungu on course for the three points. Enock Agwanda scored the other goal while Tusker’s two consolation goals came from Lloyd Wahome. Timbe and his players cannot afford to lose concentration as they prepare to face Thika United in next week’s league match. This is especially because they need to amass consistent results. “I know right that has been our main undoing, ability to beat the top teams then failing to the so called smaller teams, we are working on that. We need good results all through,” he said.

SPOT ON: Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe. The tactician says his players put in a lot of work in the run-up th their match against Tusker, which they won 4-2.

Bubba wins his second Masters title Bubba Watson won the Masters on Sunday — his second Masters victory in only six starts. That’s pretty amazing, and the fact that he owns a Dukes of Hazzard car is even greater yet. But not everyone was rooting for him. Some were actively rooting against him. And it really didn’t have anything to do with golf. Watson is on record saying being gay is wrong, and a sin. Bubba expounded on his religious insights, saying he would have dinner with a gay person. “I’m not saying I’m better than others. I’m not saying he’s wrong. I’m saying I love him and others. If he called me right now and said, ‘Hey,’ or any person that was gay called me, I’d go to dinner with them any time. It’s just my belief system on the Bible says you can’t be gay. That’s a sin. So somebody living in sin I believe to be wrong.” Watson birdied the 8th and 9th holes to separate himself from playing partner Jordan Spieth.

Maiyo back at Prisons after lengthy spell

back in action: Maiyo (L) is back in the Prisons team.

Volleyball Champions Kenya Prisons got a timely boost with the return of right attacker Lydia Maiyo ahead of the 2014 World Club Championship qualifiers to be held in Tunisia, from April 18-30. Maiyo has not played for the reigning Kenyan and Africa champions for a year after being out on maternity leave. The younger sister to Turkey based attacker Philip Maiyo shared her delight after finally linking up with her teammates. “A year out without playing can be daunting for players. It’s never easy getting back to the team, since the other players are doing great.” “After birth, players struggle to gain match fitness. It has been a big challenge for me and gladly I’m getting to my best shape,” said

the player after missing her side’s win in Madagascar last year. This was their fourth consecutive continental title. Also making it to the squad in a list released Monday afternoon by coach David Lung’aho is youthful player Edith Wisah. The team has been boosted by the return of setter Jane Wacu who returned last week after a two-week stay in France for trials. Kenya Prisons will depart Nairobi tomorrow for Tunisia. The Traveling Team: Mercy Moim, Everlye Makuto, Esther Mwombe, Diana Khisa, Joan Chelagat, Edith Wisah, Dorcas Jepleting, Bracksides Khadambi, Lydia Maiyo, Sally Wanjala, Joy Lusenaka, Jane Wacu, Elizabeth Nafula.

Nadal seeking 9th Masters in Monte Carlo World Tennis number one Rafael Nadal is going after an unprecedented ninth title in the 2014 Monte Carlo Masters. Nadal is starting his huge task of defending four 2013 titles - Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and an eighth trophy at Roland Garros, all on clay, his surface of choice. After losing the Miami final a fortnight ago to archrival Novak Djokovic, the Spaniard finds himself back in his tennis comfort zone at precisely the right moment, with the top seed opening against either a qualifier or Frenchman Gilles Simon on Tuesday. “I’m now at the top of the (points) race arriving to the clay court season,” he said. “I need to keep my confidence sky-high.” “That’s positive for me, but I need to be my 100 per cent. To make a difference I need to try to be aggressive, to try to move myself very well on clay, and to try to find the best feeling possible as soon as possible.” Elsewhere, former world number one Roger Federer returns with the aim improving his ranking. He last competed at the optional Masters in 2011 when he was beaten in a quarter-final surprise by Austrian Jurgen Melzer. The 32-year-old Swiss, who lost three straight finals there to Nadal between 2006 and 2008, will hope for for a better run this time round.

WINNER: Rafael Nadal will be out in Monte Carlo seeking his 9th Masters.

Our girls will play in IRB next year, Muthee Kenya Rugby Union chairman Mwangi Muthee says he is confident the national team will play in the International Rugby Board Women Sevens World Series next season. Kenya will come out of a qualification tournament in September to make the IRB series. Speaking after the Lionesses finished second in Saturday’s Africa Rugby Confederation Women’s seven-a-side tournament at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Muthee said the girls proved they can play the best. “I have had an opportunity to talk in detail with IRB’s Regional Manager for Africa Jean-Luc Barthes, who has confided about the recent development,” said Muthee. “I understand that every con-

tinent will produce two teams in addition to representatives from Oceania with the winner earning a for the 2015 season,” he added. The current setup has eight core teams and is played across five legs. Women head coach Kevin Wambua said the team has been improving immensely implying that its time they joined the prestigious series. “The players are playing much better now, it’s not about the men’s team all the time. Kenyan are begging to know more about the women version too,” he said. In the CAR finals, Kenya lost 0-15 in the finals to add up to their 12-21 repeat defeat in thea the pool match.

Karate Axion relegated after two lucky escapes Twice lucky, Karate Axiom finally bowed out of the men’s Hockey Premier League after finishing second from bottom. They will be joined by Mombasa based Mvita X1 in the relegation to the national league in the 2014 season. Their places will be taken up by new comers Nakuru Club and Homabay Hockey Club. Axiom finished second from the bottom of the league of 12 teams last season and should have been relegated together with Western Jaguars but the Jaguars were retained on regional balance basis Axiom too was lucky due to

the fact that Parklands the number two team in the men’s national league declined promotion to the top flight. Axiom coach GS Lall said the season has been far from average for his team who failed to achieve their mid table targets. “This season was more like getting a second chance in the top flight which we miserably failed to take advantage of. The results are out there, we simply need to strategize even more moving forward,” he said. “My target is to see the team returning to the premier league sooner than later,” he said. Mvita team manager Gabriel

Odeng’ shared the same view. His team has not had the best runs that saw them finish bottom of the men premier league. “Our performance has been free falling, and we are perhaps at our worst ever. Off pitch problems too might have contributed to our current state,” said Odeng’. Odeng also admittedthat that the game is losing popularity in the coastal part of Kenya. “Next season only one team, Mombasa Sports Club, will be playing in the premier league. Unless something is done, the state of the game is likely top even drop further,” he said.

Gor coach hails players for ending Nakuru jinx Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson praised his players after overcoming Ulinzi at the Afraha Stadium on Sunday. The Kenyan premier league champions ended a five-year jinx in Nakuru after rallying from behind to beat hosts Ulinzi 2-1. The visitors survived early pressure from the home team with second choice custodian, David Juma, forced hard to keep away Elvis Nandwa’s effort. Ulinzi’s pressure paid dividends in the 25th minute. Eric Apul’s left foot shot flew past Juma in Gor’s goal. The soldiers marched on and could have doubled the lead but Kevin Amwayi failed to connect Olivier Ruto’s cross. Robert Matano’s men paid for the missed chance almost imme-

diately. Rama Salim found the equaliser from a Danny Sserunkuma cross. David Owino netted the winning goal three minutes before the interval as Gor claimed the first victory at Afraha in over a decade. The win took Gor to second position, a point behind leaders Tusker FC while Ulinzi remained fourth from bottom. “The result on Sunday was superb. There was great coordination and good response from my side, it was a good show,” said the Scot. “There was another aspect the partnership between Salim and Sserunkuma was outstanding. It is bringing fruits and that is good for the team,” said the coach.

Kisumu Simba cry foul after point loss Kenya Hockey Union scored a late own goal to beat old rivals Simba as the curtains fell on the derailed 2013 leagues over the weekend. The league has suffered timely release of fixtures and widespread walk overs in favour of certain clubs. On Sunday, the men’s premier league runners-up, Kisumu Simba, were docked points for allegedly fielding an eligible player. That waited until Sunday as champions Kenya Police (men’s premier), Telkom Orange and Nakuru club women and national men respectively champions picked their victory medals. Kisumu were docked three points to end the season on 25 points, same as Nairobi Simba but with a superior goal aggregate. “The fight is on. There was no one point that we fielded a players who was not supposed to play, what we

are sensing is extreme foul play. We were even wondering whether the name should change to Kalpesh hockey union,” said Kisumu Simba captain Dennis Omwoka.

The result means Kisumu’s effort of return to the 2014 Africa Club cup Championships has been put to hold, at least for now.

Son outclasses father in first family Masters clash The first father and son to play in a Masters tournament ended up on opposite ends of the scoreboard in the recently concluded 2014 Augusta. Craig Stadler didn’t want to hang up his hat at the Masters until his son Kevin could play with him, and so the 1982 champion waited and waited. This year, the 34-year-old Kevin finally qualified for his first Masters, and the duo became the first father

and son to ever play in the same tournament. “The wait is over,” said the dad. Craig shot 10-over 82 in the opening round. Kevin, who teed off 40 minutes earlier in his first Masters, shot 2-under 70. “I played like a moron,” said Craig, who is exempt for life for winning the 1982 Masters. “I actually hit a lot of decent shots. I just three-putted

five or six times. Together they made history; but only one made birdies. The first father and son pair to play in the same Masters went their own ways on the scoreboard. According to others, that is what they’d already done in their lives. “I don’t know,” said Kevin. “It was nothing out of the ordinary. I’m used to seeing his name up there.”

The other goals for the midfielder came against Skernderbeu and Laci FC. The win moves Tirana to seventh position on the log with 37 points, two above relegation zone after 28 matches. “It Feels good helping my team collect all points. The match was tough but I am happy to have actually scored, my third in as many matches,” said the player. “I like how I have settled in the team, my understanding with fellow players in even GREAT SHAPE: Kahata scored in his third better now,” he said. straight match for FC Tirana in Albania.
