Kenya among the top ten poorest nations

The World Bank, in its latest report on extreme poverty, has listed Kenya as among the top 10 countries said to be home to about 80 per cent of the world’s poorest. India listed as hosting 33 per cent of the poorest people tops the list followed by China (13 per cent) as Nigeria comes in third with seven per cent.

In shortage: A boy drinks from a road-side puddle. Kenya is home to some of the poorest people in the world.

Bangladesh, which is home to six per cent of the global extreme poor, is ranked fourth and Congo DR fifth with five percent. Asian countries of Indonesia and Pakistan are sixth and seventh respectively with four per cent and three per cent of the poorest people residing there.

Kenyans among the poorest From Page 1 Tanzania (three per cent) and Ethiopia (two per cent) sneak in just above Kenya which is home to one per cent of those suffering extreme poverty. The rest of the countries contribute just 23 per cent of the poorest, says the survey conducted in 2010. In terms of those lacking in key services like electricity, East African nations dominate

the top 10 list. Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia join DR Congo and Nigeria in the top 10 countries with millions reported to lack electricity supply. India leads the pack with up to 306 million people reportedly lacking in electricity connection followed by Nigeria (82 million), Bangladesh (67 million), Ethiopia (64 million) and DR Congo (60million).

A total of 31 million people lack access to electricity lines to place the country at position seven among the worst. This is just a place behind Tanzania where some 38 million people lack electricity. Sudan with 30.9 million and Uganda (28.5 million) follow in eighth and ninth respectively. Myanmar completes the list with 24.6 million people lacking electricity.

But Kenya is ranked the best country for access and use of mobile money transfer in Sub-Sahara Africa at 68 per cent of Kenyans said to have abandoned traditional banking methods. Other factors that were considered in the data include the relationship between internet usage and GDP per capita, poorest girl who do not finish primary school

Malawi President pissed off by Madonna’s bloated ego

After a recent trip to Malawi, pop star Madonna took to international press complaining of being treated with hostility. When Madonna arrived in Malawi on Monday last week with her four children (two of whom she adopted from Malawi), she was treated as a VIP: the Malawi government provided her with heavy security. But on Saturday night, Malawi immigration officials refused to accord the privileges to her party before she boarded a private Gulfstream jet. Angered by Madonna’s tirade that has been extensively covered by the press, President Joyce Banda, Africa’s second female president, wrote an 11-point response to Madonna which is awash with sarcasm. “Claims and misgivings have been expressed by pop star Madonna and her agents against the Malawi government and its leadership for not giving her the attention and courtesy she thinks she merits and deserves during her recent trip to Malawi,” the press release reads in part. “According to the claims, Madonna feels the Malawi government and its leadership should have abandoned everything and attended to her because she believes she is a music star-turned benefactor who is doing Malawi good. “It must be noted that the President, Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda, and her government are ready to welcome any philanthropist seeking to assist in improving the welfare of the people of Malawi knowing that Her Excellency, herself, is a known philanthropist. However, acts of kindness must always remain as such; they must not smack of blackmail.”

Police watchdog vets crackdown on aliens The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating claims that police are abusing human rights in the ongoing security operation to flush out illegal immigrants. More than 500 suspected illegal immigrants have been arrested in police swoops in the last two weeks. Some of the suspects have been deported to home countries. But human rights oragnisations, including the United Nations

High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), have expressed concern that the Usalama Watch operation has infringed on basic human rights. And yesterday, IPOA deployed investigators to the Kasarani Safaricom Stadium where suspects are being detained to verify the claims. IPOA chairman Macharia Njeru said his officers are also monitoring some police stations where

some of those arrested have been detained. “In cases where the investigations find instances of abuse, we shall not hesitate to take action against individual members,” he said. Hundreds missing in Korea ferry disaster

EMERGENCY: Rescue teams ferry passengers off the shore. At least two people have been confirmed dead.

Forensic lab key in terror war, says Tobiko The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has called for the creation of a national forensic laboratory to deal with terrorism. Tobiko said old methods of evidence gathering like witness accounts can no longer be relied upon to prosecute such crimes. “The government should establish a fully equipped national forensic laboratory to deal with crimes such as terrorism,” he said. He was speaking on Tuesday during the second annual convention of prosecutors at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi. He said lack of proper coordination in the security system was hampering the crackdown on those organising terror strikes. Tobiko said police agencies lack of modern and adequate equipment has left the country vulnerable to terror attacks. Chief Justice Willy Mutunga called for increased funding to agencies involved in the delivery of justice.

Several hundred people remain unaccounted for after a ferry carrying 476 people capsized and sank off South Korea. The ferry, carrying mainly school students, was travelling from the port of Incheon, in the northwest, to the southern resort island of Jeju. A major rescue effort is under way, using dozens of ships and helicopters. Several hours after the disaster, at least 290 people remained missing, local media said. South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error. They have now revised down the number rescued to about 180, Yonhap news agency reported. Two people are known to have died and at least 13

others have been injured, reports say. Images showed the ferry listing at a severe angle and then later almost completely submerged, with only a small part of its hull visible. Pictures showed rescue teams balanced on the sinking hull pulling teenagers from cabin windows. Some of their classmates jumped into the sea as the ship went down. Reports suggest some of those rescued were picked up by nearby commercial vessels. Navy divers were now searching the scene for those unaccounted for, officials said. One body, of a female crew member, had been recovered from the ship, the coastguard said. Another person is reported to have died after being rescued.

FIGHTING FRAUD Online retail shop, OLX is working on a plan to educate Kenyans in a bid to reduce cases of fraud. Users of the site have raised concerns about conmen and thugs luring them with the promise of low-cost or affordable poducts. Those buying goods from advertisers have been urged to meet in public places and avoid giving out personal information such as bank details. Instead., they have been advised to only provide information that is relevant to the transaction. “We would like to also discourage buyers from carrying large amounts of cash when going to meet sellers,” said OLX Country Manager Peter Ndiangui. “We want to educate Kenyans on what the challenges involved in these transactions are and help them avoid them.”

US Airways apologises over Twitter explicit photo US Airways has apologised after an explicit photo was sent from its official Twitter account in response to a customer complaint. The airline said in a statement that it was trying to flag the image as ‘inappropriate’ but mistakenly included it in a message. The tweet was deleted after about an hour but not before it had

been retweeted hundreds of times. The airline said it regretted the error and was reviewing its processes. The image, which featured a naked woman and a toy plane, had originally been sent to the company’s Twitter account by another user, it said. The photo was later attached to a tweet that

was sent to a US Airways customer who had taken to the social network to express her frustration that her flight was delayed. Once the mistake had been realised, US Airways deleted the offending tweet and issued an apology. “We apologise for an inappropriate image recently shared as a link in one of our

responses. We’ve removed the tweet and are investigating,” the airline said on its Twitter feed. The company has more than 420,000 followers on its Twitter account and has not tweeted since. US Airways is merged with American Airlines, who were also caught up in a Twitter row on Monday after a 14-

year old Dutch girl sent a tweet to the airline implying she was part of al-Qaeda group and planning an attack. American Airlines responded via Twitter saying her details would be passed to FBI for investigation. Both tweets have now been deleted and the girl’s Twitter account suspended.

Rain threatens aid work in South Sudan It is a race against the weather for humanitarian aid groups trying to prevent famine in South Sudan. The rainy season is six months away and thousands still in need of food supply demanding that aid groups stock up on relief supplies. “We need to come up with money now because if we don’t pre-position food now, now, before the rainy season, we may hit a famine. So if in six months if we haven’t done anything, people are dying from hunger, we cannot say we didn’t see this coming,” European Union aid chief Kristalina Georgieva said in an interview with Reuters. Since its secession from the Sudan in 2011, the world’s youngest country has yet to experience peace as it has been in constant bickering with the Sudan over oil.

We cannot keep them reading from Monday to Monday as that denies them enough rest,” he said. Those planning to conduct coaching will be arrested for

failure to obey circulars by the ministry before schools close proceeded for holidays. Holiday tuition was banned in Kenya in 2013 after Parliament passed and enacted the Basic Education Act, 2013. The law prescribed a fine of up to Sh100, 000 or a jail term of not more than five years for offenders. The CS said student leaders

will be incorporated in the recently formed school fees taskforce as stakeholders. “Student leaders have brilliant ideas. Their input in the taskforce is critical so that they do not feel left out,” said Kaimenyi. He said involvement of student leaders in management boards is compulsory and asked schools that have not

fulfilled the requirement to do so immediately. Kaimenyi hailed the student leaders union for helping to drastically reduce the number of strikes to 70 since its inception in 2008. He said the laptop project is still on course and dismissed calls that high school students should have been given top priority.

A woman in Elgeyo Marakwet stabbed her two children to death before trying to commit suicide after quarrelling her husband. The 46-year-old woman (name withheld) allegedly stabbed the three year-old son and a daughter aged one using a knife. She later slit the girl’s throat with the knife in what police said was an attempt at suicide. Her screams attracted the attention of neighbours, who broke into the house and alerted police. The woman is said to have been depressed on learning that her husband of four years had allegedly been living with another woman. There were claims that the man was planning to formalise the relationship. The husband is a police officer in Nairobi. The angry woman locked the children inside the house before committing the heinous crime. Administration Police Commander Sammy Chandago said officers took the suspect to Kaptagat Police Station and later Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret because of excessive bleeding on the throat. The bodies of the children were taken to the hospital mortuary.

deteCtor: a sniffer dog. the nairobi County government has introduced similar animals to be used by security officers to detect explosives.

The Nairobi County government has introduced sniffer dogs for patrols to deal with the rising cases of grenade blasts and gun attacks. The dogs to be handled by specially trained officers from the City Inspectorate Department will begin patrols this week. County Executive Committee member for Transport Evans Ondieki said the 20 dogs have been trained for the exercise and are in Karen awaiting deployment. The operation will be launched in the Central Business District and exclusive neighbourhoods of Runda, Westlands and Karen. The areas have recently been hit by an upsurge in crime. The dogs will be deployed around bus stops to sniff out explosives and firearms that have been used by terrorists and criminals. Ondieki said insecurity can no longer be left to the national government. “If our people cannot get home safe because they have stayed late in CBD, it worries us as well. The matter can no longer be left to the national government alone,” he said. Mr Ondieki said the dogs were imported from South Africa at Sh100,000 each while others were bred locally. He said patrols will spread to other estates as the county government hopes to bring in more sniffer dogs.

Unions, employers face off over wages

Workers unions and employers look set for a clash over the minimum wage after the latter threatened not to obey any increase in workers earnings this year. The Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) Monday declared that its members would not implement wage increase should the government announce the same during this year’s forthcoming Labour Day celebrations.

Workers Unions, led by the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), are pushing for a 20 percent increase of the minimum wage but the employers have threatened to reject such increments, arguing that the current minimum wage of Sh13, 674 is the highest in the region. FKE executive director Jacqueline Mugo told those advocating for an increase to “let reason prevail”.

“The employers are already burdened with a huge wage bill and the high cost of production,” she said. But COTU, through secretary general Francis Atwoli, dismissed the federation as people inclined to subject the workers to indirect slavery. “Paying somebody a wage that cannot sustain him is indirect slavery and we are asking the government to adjust the minimum wage by 20 percent,”

Atwoli said. President Uhuru Kenyatta last year announced a 14 percent increase on the minimum wage ,which saw the salaries move from Sh11, 995 to Sh13, 674. The Government has traditionally adjusted the earnings of the lowest paid workers on Labour Day and it remains to be seen whether the employers will defy the order should President Kenyatta offer another increase on May 1.

Mental assylum for man who battered uncle with hammer A court in the UK has ordered an indefinite detention in hospital of a man who battered his uncle on the head with a hammer. Paul Hartop, 46, is believed to be a paranoid schizophrenic, who claims his mother is the Queen of England. He pleaded guilty to attempting to murder his 75-year-old uncle Brendan on March 11, 2012 at his home

on Main Street, Dromore. Hartop confessed to hitting the old man with a hammer several times until he believed he was dead. Dungannon Crown Court Judge Gemma Loughran was also told that Hartop is convinced he has been resurrected three times and has superpowers. Hartop also believes he is the friend of famous celebrities, and

considers The Incredible Hulk a friend. Last week the court heard Hartop believed that his uncle’s home was rightly his, after his grandfather, with whom he had lived for a time, had left it to his family. At one stage he thought of killing his sister and her husband, but decided on his elderly uncle, because he appeared to be the “easier option”. His uncle, who now

needs constant care, ultimately bought out his siblings and was living alone. In police interviews, Hartop said he went into a shed at the back of his uncle’s home, before going into the house. He waited upstairs for his unsuspecting uncle, who had been to a bar, to go to bed. An hour later, Hartop attacked the sleeping man with the claw hammer. He battered

him over the head, before returning downstairs to make something to eat. He later returned to the bedroom, and discovering his uncle Brendan still breathing, attacked and battered him for a second time. The following morning Hartop phoned police to confess – but was surprised when officers found the critically-ill pensioner was still breathing.

Supermarket allows shopping on credit COOKING FUEL:The rising cost of cooking fuel has increased the price of living.

Naivas Supermarket has entered into a partnership with finance company afb which will allow customers to buy goods on credit at any of the supermarket’s stores across the country. Afb Managing Director Brett van Aswegen said the company which spells its name in small letters, will help consumers buy goods without cash. “afb and Naivas will introduce the Naivas Retail Credit Card which is an unsecured, revolving credit facility that allows customers to buy goods in Naivas stores on credit. They can repay with six affordable monthly payments,” said van Aswegen.

The Credit Card will give customers an unsecured loan of up to Sh15, 000 (US$175). Customers can apply for the card at a number of Naivas stores. It will take less than 24 hours to secure a card. “The initial credit facility offered to customers will range from Sh12, 000 to Sh15, 000 and this will increase over time depending on the customer’s responsible use of credit and repayment period,” said van Aswegen. Naivas Managing Director David Kimani said the partnership was crucial in addressing the changing customner needs by providing unsecured credit.

Many Kenyan customers can only get credit from trusting retailers and local shops while supermarkets have insisted on the use of either cash or debit cards. The country’s third largest supermarket chain will become the first retailer of its kind to offer the service in Kenya. “Naivas customers can buy goods on credit without the need to post any form of collateral and repay with six affordable monthly repayments,” said Kimani. Repayment will be made through Naivas outlets and through mobile money platforms like Mpesa and Airtel Money.

China’s gold demand to rise by 20 per cent Demand for gold in China is expected to rise by 20 per cent in five years, the World Gold Council has said. The Council says China is at the centre of the global gold eco-system. The rapid demand for the precious mineral has been attributed to the rise in urbanisation which has led to a growing middle class. Growth in high levels of savings and restrictions on other investments are fuelling demand for the metal. The council estimates that private sector demand for gold will rise from 1132 tonnes to 1,350 tonnes in jewellery, gold bars and coins for investment. Last year, China overtook India as the world’s largest gold-consuming nation. The buying accelerated as prices fell by 28 per cent which was the lowest since 1981. The country became the top

buyer. India’s fall from the top was attributed to import restrictions which curbed demand. China’s economy is also expected to grow by 7.4 per cent this year.

Western markets’ demand for the precious metal is also strong, especially in US where gold jewellery enjoys the highest sales. Back home, Kenya is taking toward steps as it eyes its

gold exporting status. “With proper legislation and Government facilitation, Kenya can produce at least 12 tonnes of gold every year,” says acting Commissioner of Mines, Moses Njeru.

consumerrights Buyers should not pay more than 10 pc of items price Suppliers of goods and services can only charge 10 per cent above the estimated price for a product, states the Consumer Protection Act, a law protects the rights of customers in Kenya. Manufacturers of goods or services in Kenya provide an estimated price for the product and suppliers are not required to charge customers more than 10 per cent of the estimate. This is unless additional or different goods or services are provided. A number of service providers ignore the welfare of consumers to profit from their ignorance. A report by the Kenya Financial Education Centre, a local public awareness group, says the providers illegally hike the prices. The Consumer Protection Act is supposed to discourage the behavior.

While the 10 per cent rule applies to shop owners, supermarkets and other retail-based businesses, it can also be enforced in the service sector. The Act says vehicle mechanics may only charge a consumer for work or repairs in cases where they had initially given an estimate of charges. “A repairer may only charge for work or repairs that were authorised by the consumer,” the Act says. “A repairer cannot charge an amount that exceeds the estimate by more than ten per cent.” In case of vehicle accidents or maintenance, repairers are not allowed to give an estimate that is greater than what they usually charge. This is because the cost is to be paid by an insurance company.

positive rivalry: service provider airtel has announced plans to boost its network capacity by allowing three network providers use its infrastructure. the move is bound to increase users’ options, ultimately driving down costs.

New mobile networks to drive down calling costs

Telecom service provider Airtel has announced it will boost its network capacity in order to give its customers better service. The company said that it will sublet its infrastructure to three companies-Equity bank’s Finserve Africa, Zioncell Kenya and Mobile Pay. The three companies will obtain

bulk access to Airtel’s services at wholesale rates, then set retail prices independently-a move that will likely drive drive down call charges. Kenyan telecom companies charge high call rates compared to service providers in other countries. Most service providers in the developed world offer monthly

bundles with unlimited talk time. While international calls from Kenya to the US can cost as much as Sh10 per minute on some local networks, providers like Orange mobile in the UK charge Sh116 per month for unlimited calls to the same region. The Communications Commission of Kenya has said that the new operators will help

increase competition among local providers and therefore give Kenyans access to more affordable options. Communications Authority of Kenya Director General, Francis Wangusi at the same time confirmed that the number of mobile operators is bound to remain low, owing to the high set up costs involved.

“As you are aware, spectrum for building mobile network infrastructure is limited and we are therefore unable to accommodate many mobile network operators,” said Wangusi. “At the same time the cost of building a mobile cellular network is high and few entities have the capacity to invest in such infrastructure.”

Given a growing number of small businesses in the country, a number of entrepreneurs often lack the means to fund their business. Many small-scale entrepreneurs are unable to secure bank loans because they do not have the requirements that mainstream lenders are looking for. Small-scale lenders have taken this as an opportunity to provide these business owners with affordable loans. Wesida Kenya is a microfinance company that offers loans, business training services and business management courses to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The lender, whose head office is located off Gitanga Road in Nairobi, gives loans of between Sh20,000 and Sh100,000 based on a member’s savings. While most lenders only give loans to account holders who have been with them for several months, Wesida allows its members to save for at least four weeks before they can qualify for a loan. They charge an interest rate of 25 per cent per year for the amount of money borrowed. The non-profit group gets it’s funding from well-wishers and international donors.

Mitumba shoes Second-hand shoe sellers can make between Sh3,000 and Sh5,000 a day, states a survey by Xinhua. This is a drop from close to five year ago when traders could make as much as Sh10,400 over the same period. l Kiva, a group that supports human development, estimates that the starting capital needed to start such a business ranges between Sh9,000 and Sh14,000. The sector has been facing competition from local shops and outlets, which sell brand new footwear. l Xinhua notes that traders are recording a drop in business as people go for new shoes. High prices, changes in consumer preferences and drop in prices of brand new imported footwear have caused the traders to lose many of their customers. l Traders were selling the shoes from as low as Sh1,000 to Sh3,500. As the popularity of second-hand shoes has risen, traders have hiked the prices selling some branded footwear for up to Sh6, 000. l In the Nairobi city centre, several shops selling brand new shoes have emerged locking out traders of second-hand footwear due to the jump in prices.

‘Mother’ chicken farmer sees his dream hatch The Brade Gate Poultry Farm is the ‘mother’ of all chicken farms in Kenya. Sitting on more than an acre of land, it produces 160,000 chicks a week. It is located about 10 kilometres from Nyeri Town and is owned by Dr Thuo Mathenge, an entrepreneur who has built one of the biggest chicken farms in East Africa.

Dr Mathenge, an ambitious man since early childhood, had always dreamed of a brighter future. He worked his way from proverty to doctor with a farm worth Sh50 million. By 2005, he had already made enough money from his career as a doctor to own a number of rental buildings. He sold five of them to found Brade Gate Poultry Farm.

The farm sells more than 3,000 chickens daily to hotels, restaurants and learning institutions. Brade Gate has a breeding farm, a hatchery, a supermarket, its own processing plant and feeding mill for the hens. The supermarket is a one-stop for all poultry products, materials, equipment and information. The hatchery can produce 800,000 chicks a day. Selling day-old

chicks to other poulty farmers is also part of his business. “Usually, the chicks, which we sell at only Sh65 each, are ready for collection on Tuesdays and Fridays,” says Dr Mathenge, a father of seven. His enterprise has provided opportunities for hundreds of other poultry farmers who either buy their supplies from him or work in tandem with his company.

Doc finds out no pain compares to labour WEDNESday, April 16, 2014

Becoming a mother may be every woman’s proudest moments, made more so, perhaps, by the unparalleled pain of childbirth, which is estimated to be the equivalent of fracturing 20 bones at ago! Sorry guys, even that dreaded kick in crotch does not get anywhere near what women endure to bring forth those lovely little ones. When Dr Andrew Rochford, an Australian obstetrician, found that out, he apologised to the womenfolk for thinking the pain of child bearing is really not that much. Dr Rochford had volunteered for an experiment to deduce magnitude of labour pain. The labour pains were simulated through low-voltage electrodes attached to his abdomen and were carefully timed by a physiotherapist, who by the way was female, to mimic the contraction patterns of a first time mother in labour. Some women endure up to 12 hours of labour but after just three and a half, Dr Rochord could not take it anymore. Not even the painkillers he had injected could help. Also note that most women in labour do not take painkillers. After his experiment, the obviously wiser and enlightened obstetrician declared: “Men of the world, you have no idea. Leave it to the women. Forget the whole pain threshold debate. We have nothing.

baby bump: Childbirth is considered one of the most painful experiences

Women win. Men don’t. The end.” The pain of childbirth is one of the reasons as to why many women nowadays are opting for caesarean section instead of natural birth. Kenya has the highest caesarean section rates in sub-Saharan Africa, this is

according to a 2003 study, Demographic and Health Surveys. But despite the C-section reducing the stress about anticipation of labour pains for a woman, the risks are much greater. It can lead to the death of the mother and the baby during the operation.

Joy of sight for 2 Kwale boys

Jeffwa Nyando lost two precious things in his first year of life — his sight and his mother. Jefwa found himself sightless after contracting cataracts, a condition wherethe lens is clouded, blocking light from the retina and leading to decreased vision. Depressed by her son’s condition, his mother committed suicide — a tragedy that left her family devasted and broken. Jefwa’s father remarried and got another son, who, unfortunately, also turned blind. The painful burden of two blind sons was devastating Half of his family was now visually impaired and it made him feel helpless but that was to change In 2010 when a community health worker from Christian Blinds Mission’s (CBM), a partner of the Kwale District Hospital in Coast

Province, chanced upon the unfortunate family. He took the two boys for tests and it was discovered that their condition was completely reversible. The two were immediately scheduled for surgery. The surgery was entirely successful and for the first time in 13years Jefwa saw the light and colours of the word. His brother also received the same gift much to their father’s delight. In an interview, Jefwa said, “I know my little brother felt and saw the exact same thing. My father was filled with so much joy.” He was beyond ecstatic at the thought of his sons seeing. It meant he could finally take them to school. A condition that had robbed the family a chunk of joy and peace had now been lifted. They could now live in light and explore their new found gift.

Human beings may regard the chimpanzee with a bit of mirth not knowing, perhaps that they have the same amount of hair on their body per square inch as their distant evolutionary cousin. The only difference is that in humans, the hair is too pale and light to be seen by the naked eye. On average, humans have between 100, 000 to 150,000 strands on their heads, which grows at the rate of

about 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres per day. This means all strands on human head can support the weight of a 4,500 kg elephant! Humans also lose about 60-100 strands of hair in a day. But this cannot be noted unless it’s a case of balding. However, hair loss is also associated with age, pregnancy, and health and diet. Hair strand can be used for forensic studies. It can be used to test for illicit drugs because of depositions of drug

wastes or metabolites. Several studies say black hair is linked to more melanin, the colouring pigment in humans. The higher the level of melanin the darker your hair. Grey hair starts to develop when people advance in age because their bodies produce less melanin, making their hair to be pale, the grey or white you see. But it is possible to have hair follicles o more than one colour.

Bamboo gives floors distinct taste Bamboo floors give classy and elegant finishes. The floors elevate the aesthetic value of a living room to a distinct shine that is warmer, easier and softer to the eye. Bamboo floors are also easy to maintain and just require a sweep or vacuum to remove dust. You can also wipe dust with a damp rag. Kimani Kamau, a bamboo floor installer, says properly harvested and treated bamboo are long-lasting. “Mature bamboo that is manufactured in the right conditions can last on a floor for about 25 years. They can be as durable as the hardwood, red

oak,” said Kamau. According to Kamau, bamboo takes time to grow and mature, making it compact. The compact nature makes it a dismal moisture absorber, as well as makes it resistant to decay and UV rays’ damage when on outdoor use. This especially for un-carbonised and strand woven floors. Bamboos come in a range of distinct colours and gains. Natural golden is a neutral for most houses while natural blonde, burnt mocha and red cognac can be customised as one wishes.

As dirt and detergents most likely make your bathroom or kitchen look untidy with irregular map-like spots and drips, semi-glossy paint is stain resistant. Simple cleaning with water and a gentle detergent is enough for the walls to regain the glare you had finished with. Since the paint is stain resistant, you will not be required to aggressively scrab the bathroom or kitchen walls to remove foreign colourations.

Adrenaline fix from a cliff dive

Off shore racing for the adrenaline junkies wet fun: Speedboat racers in action. Offshore racing is favourite pastime for adrenaline junkies but also a professional pursuit.

rippling waves while blinded by sleet from competitors’ boats. The sport is common in the West where it has its own race series, its own association and major sponsors to back the teams. Some

people have even decided to take it up as a full time career. Despite it being a fun sport, it is one of the most hazardous competitions and it is estimated that one racer dies each year from accidents.

Intensive training is recommended for beginners in off shore racing, whether they intend it as a career or just a hobby. It is approximated that the fatality rate in water speed is 85%.

Cliff diving is a taste of flying but without wings. It brings a new dimension to the sport of diving, which makes it closer to acrobatics in air. The game basically requires one to stand on edge of a cliff and taking a plunge into the waters below. The higher the cliff, the greater the thrill. This dangerous sport is believed to have originated from the Hawaiian Island of Lana´i in 1770. Their king, Kahekili demanded that his men leap off high cliffs and enter the water feet first without a splish-splash, to attest their bravery and allegiance. The king did this oblivious of the fact that years later, audacious men and women would turn his loyalty-proving stunts into a sport of immense thrill and risk. Men are set to jump from a height of 23 – 28 meters while women 18 – 23 with an ideal entering speed of 75 – 100 km/h, and a free fall time of 3 seconds. There is however a very thin line between getting the desired rush and tragedy. Cliff divers stare death on their face every time they flight themselves off the cliff and go hurtling downwards. A slight mistake or even jumping from a higher ground is fatal. Jimmy Collins a cliff diver died after jumping from a 20m cliff. Thrill-seekers in Kenya can engage in the the sport at Fort Jesus in Mombasa and Alfajiri cliff in Diani, South Coast.

New gear Kenya will for the next two years be kitted by Joma P.15

Tusker Simba My world record likely to be broken soon, says Kipsang seek to end Cup on a high Tusker Simba XV, who slumped to their sixth consecutive defeat in the Vodacom Cup in South Africa, will be seeking a positive result when they play Toyota Free State XV on Saturday. Top of the log Cell C Sharks XV hammered the Kenyan team 40-3 at the City Park, Cape Town, last weekend Simba will travel to Bloemfontein and seek to end the season on a high with no chance of progressing in the competition. Coach Jerome Paarwater’s

target is a positive end to the season that has seen his side register a solitary win in their debut year at the Vodacom Cup. “We are now basically playing for honours on Saturday, we want to end on the high, our debut season has had mixed results, and yes we have learnt a lot,” said Paarwater. “My players will be reflecting on the season that has been, I am sure there are lots of positive things that they have learnt,” he said. “Now our target is to enjoy playing our last game with the target of winning.”

World marathon champion and London course record holder, Wilson Kipsang is confident his world record will soon be broken. The 32-year-old Kipsang, who on Sunday ran 2:04:29 to win the race, touched down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday to take an immediate flight to Johannesburg, where he is set to speak at a conference. “I have no doubt the record will not stand for long with the current crop of runners we have. I am confident it will be broken very soon, either by me or someone else,” said the police officer. “In London when they gave me the opportunity to control I had to run my race. How I planned it was a secret,” he said. “The only place to speed up was from 30km and that is what I did for the last 12km,” he said. Kipsang said he has a busy schedule that involves addressing international press conferences. “Beginning with the South African one, my schedule is fully booked. I will give interviews, motivations and encouragements to upcoming athletes,” he said. Kipsang’s next race will be at BUPA Great Manchester Run on May 18.

REALISTIC: Kipsang says he is sure his London record will be shattered soon.

Sacked KCB coach blames ‘dark forces’ Juma Abdallah, the reigning Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Coach of the Year, was the main man last season, after leading KCB to a top four finish. On Monday, however, the accomplishment was forgotten as he suffered the indignity of being relieved from duty, following the team’s 2-1 loss to Bandari. He was replaced by goalkeeping trainer Daniel Oluoch, who took over on an interim capacity. Abdallah paid for his inability to stop the KCB free fall to mediocrity as they collected their sixth defeat in nine games. The soft spoken Abdallah, in an interview with XSPORT, said selling key players from

last season was not the main reason behind his axing, but rather some unseen forces within the club. Midfielder Brian Osumba, winger Clifford Alwanga, and forward Jacob Keli are the key players who left the bankers at the end of last season. “There was nothing I did wrong at KCB. Some things happened that I cannot explain. It seems I was not in charge since the start of the season,” Abdallah said. “I have never witnessed something like this. It seems some powerful individuals were not happy with my job and were set to bring me down.” Abdalla’s sacking followed reports from the club that some senior players had been calling the shots-to the extent of selecting the squad for matches. “Abdallah is an amazing coach, but it is sad to say he has not been in charge. There have been instances when certain known individual selects a team not based on merit but favourism. I don’t think he was the problem,” said one player who sought anonymity for fear of victimization. Abdallah becomes the fourth coach to be fired this season after newcomers Top Fry Nakuru sacked German Oliver Page, Western Stima dismissed Francis Baraza and AFC Leopards dispensed James Nandwa.

Mutai reveals resolve to beat big talking Farah despite injury Former London Marathon winner and course title holder Emmanuel Mutai says he was not fit for Sunday’s race but could not allow Britain’s Mo Farah to beat him. Mutai, the 2011 winner who finished seventh in 2:08:19, said he had to run despite fainting in his hotel room on the eve of the marathon. He injured his head, shoulder and hip joint in the fall. “I decided to run because my body felt fine but for about 27km before I started feeling pain and from there, I decided just to fight for the finish,” said Mutai on arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport yesterday morning. “Of course, I could not allow Mo Farah to beat me and that is why I chased him hard when I saw he was ahead of me and ensured I will get there ahead of me.” “The double Olympic 5000m and 10,000m was making his debut, the talk was how he was going to defeat us, that way I had to work harder,” he said. “For now, I will take two months or so to recover before I plan for my future. There are other races in the course of the year and I will think whether I will return to London again.”

Kenya lands new kit sponsors WEDNESday, APRIL 16, 2014

Kenya Football Federation has landed a lucrative kit sponsorship from manufacturer Joma. The kit, which FKF president Sam Nyamweya revealed is estimated to be around Sh100million, will be won by all national teams from Under-17, U-20, U-23 and senior team for two years. The home kit is white, while the away kit is red. Players will also have track-suits and leisure wear. Maurizio Ramacciotti, a representative of Joma, said they will not pay money to Kenya FA but have worked out a deal in which the federation will get part of the cash from the sale of merchandise. “I am sure this will bring identity to the Kenyan football fans who need to know clearly their home and away kits. I believe our partnership will be extended after the two years,” said Ramacciotti. “We are delighted to enter into such a partnership with FKF and look forward to a great partnership with the federation.” FKF President Sam Nyamweya said they will not buy kit for national teams in the next two years. “This is encouraging and it saves us the huge cost of buying kit.” “The quality of the new kit cannot be overlooked also. It is really great and as a federation, we are pleased to enter into this kind of partnership,” said Nyamweya. Nairobi Sports House is the official retailer of the new kit.

RED, GREEN AND WHITE: The Kenyan national team kit was part of a Sh200m sponsorship deal between FKF and Spanish manufacturers Joma. The kit will be won by all national teams from Under-17, U-20, U-23 and senior team for two years.

Red Bull accept FIA ruling and move on Formula One team Red Bull’s appeal against Daniel Ricciardo’s disqualification from the Australian Grand Prix has been rejected by the International Court of Appeal. Ricciardo finished second in his home race last month but was disqualified hours later when stewards ruled his car had breached new fuel flow regulations. “The Court, after having heard the parties and examined their submissions, decided to uphold the Decision No.56 of the stewards by which they decided to exclude Infiniti Red

Bull Racing’s car No.3 from the results of the 2014 Australian Grand Prix,” International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement. No further sanctio was announced. “We are of course disappointed by the outcome and would not have appealed if we didn’t think we had a very strong case,” Red Bull said in a statement. “We will continue to work very hard to amass as many points as possible for the team, Daniel and Sebastian (Vettel) throughout the season.”

Gerrard’s defining moment Liverpool captain has urged his teammates to hold on even as the club sets to lift the first league title in 24 years. Gerrard’s tearful response to Liverpool’s key 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday signified just how much the prospect of lifting the Premier League trophy means to the Reds captain. This is after so many years labouring in vain to restore his club to the summit of the English game. The 33-year-old will do everything in his power to seize this unexpected chance in the twilight of his career. He displayed the zeal in a stirring pep-talk to team-mates following the final whistle at Anfield. “We have got to treat Norwich like we treated AC Milan in 2005. That’s just how football is. We can’t think about what colour shirts Norwich are wearing and the personnel in them. We have got to treat them like the best team in the world.” Ironically, Liverpool overcame Chelsea, their rivals in two weeks in the semi-finals on their way to meeting Milan.

Gerard wants Liverpool to fulfil his dream in the 25th anniversary season of the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Reds fans during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final. Even after Liverpool won 4-1 at Old Trafford in March 2009, Gerrard wasn’t this close to getting his hands on the title. The victory still left

them four points behind Manchester United, who had a game in hand, and ultimately fell short. If they dock four wins from matches against Norwich, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Newcastle, the Reds will be crowned champions. Gerrard’s ability to recognise his limitations has been vital to Liverpool’s renaissance.

PLAN: Liverpool kipper Gerrard says they will not underrate Norwich.

90 players to play in Tanahill golf tourney

DRIVER: Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix after his car was found to have breached fuel rules.

A large number of golfers have confirmed participation in the 90th Tanahill Shield golf tournament through the Easter weekend at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club. The over 90 players will be drawn from Muthaiga, Sigona, Karen, Windsor, Mombasa, Limuru, Western, Railways and Royal clubs in the

round robin competition. Speaking when launching this year’s event, Royal captain Karim Pisani said the tournament will have a competitive edge since teams will fight to avoid relegation. “The tournament is acknowledged as the premier amateur golf event in the country and it’s usually very competi-

tive,” he said. “To allow other teams like Kiambu and Vet lab to participate in future, the team that finishes last will be relegated to pave way for the next team that will be selected by the committee members,” he said. Title sponsor Coca-Cola gave a boost to this year’s event with Sh2.3m.
