Dirty: A heap of beer bottles adjacent to a low-income residential plot. In the far distance is a block of apartments, whose inhabitants are of the middle-income status. Lack of waste management and sewerage systems, coupled with a straining water supply, is making the area unfriendly to live in.

Rongai stinks in garbage, overcrowding, water crisis

many to the residential area, triggering a huge swell in the population of inhabitants. “I was born and raised here. The environment was always clean until people started settling in around 2000,Michael Mwaura says.

For instance, Mayor Road, an estate where the rich and poor sit cheek by jowl, is in a pathetic state. Overcrowding by residents is worsened by insufficient water supply, exposing area residents to deploring living conditions. Most land buyers have built rental houses on their plots. Some of the rental houses are ringed by concrete walls or iron sheets. In a section set aside by iron sheets, there are about 40 houses whose occupants share three filthy toilets and three bathrooms. Not far away is a dumping site whose foul smell greets users of nearby rusty toilets.

Since the plot has no fence, two of the toilets are up for use by passersby. There is no water supply so residents have to sneak into their landlord’s well-kept and fenced compound for water at Sh5 for a 20 litre container. Chief Patrick Wakaba says landlords usually erect extra toilets as more people rent their premises but that is not the case in Rongai. “This issue will be properly addressed,” he says. Along Gataka road stands another column of houses with no electric power. Residents use a single toilet and a bathroom. The houses are adjacent to a school complex which is poorly fenced. Residents sneak into the institution

to relieve themselves in three of the school’s stench-reeking toilets. Near the school is a stream of open sewer that drains directly into River Mbagathi’s tributary. The river’s water is drawn by many upstream residents who cannot afford clean water on daily basis. Residents say their toilets are always full but the landlord is hardly bothered. In wet seasons, the toilet discharge is swept into the river’s tributary. “When we use the toilet, we have to be careful because the filth underneath can splash your face,” says Alfred Ouma. The county representative Pastor John Wanyoike told XNews the

sanitation issue has been taken seriously by the county council in conjunction with health officers. He says sewage hazard is due to the absence a sewer system. Investors, he adds, have been advised by the county government to erect a maximum of three-storey buildings as a way of managing waste disposal. “Most land buyers, engineers and contractors flout the rule. They erect multiple storey buildings endangering people’s health,” he sayd. Wanyoike says he has received complaints from people who have been subjected to deplorable housing conditions. Landlords have been given notice to upgrade

their clients living conditions by improving water services and erecting adequate number of toilets. Those who fail to adhere to the rule will be arrested and their premises shut down until they comply. Waste management is also a major issue in the region. Since garbage is strewn all over the place, the accumulated waste matter produces stench that attracts flies, rats and mice that fight for space with innocent young children playing in open spaces. Unscrupulous bar owners have taken advantage of the precarious condition to dump empty beer bottles on feeder roads next to a junior school.

US expresses ‘horror’ over massacre in South Sudan The United States has expressed “horror about the abomination” over the worsening civil war in South Sudan after rebels took control of another town from government troops. The White House has issued a statement following graphic pictures of hundreds of civilians massacred last week in Bentiu being circulated. Rebels are reported to have seized the Unity State town and unleashed two days of ethnic slaughter. The gangs hunted down civilians sheltering in hospitals, mosques and churches as dozens were butchered on the roadside, the United Nations said. “We are horrified by reports out of South Sudan that fighters aligned to rebel leader Riek Machar massacred hundreds of innocent civilians last week in Bentiu,” said a statement from spokesman Jay Carney. “We are equally appalled by the armed attack last week at the UN Mission in South Sudan site in Bor that killed at least 48 civilians and injured dozens more,” Carney said. “These acts of violence are an abomination. They are a betrayal of the trust the South Sudanese people have put in their leaders.” The White House asked President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar to “make clear that attacks on civilians are unacceptable, perpetrators of violence on both sides must be brought to Rebel fighters gather in a village in Upper Nile State in South Sudan. Last week, Rebels hunted down civilians in Bentiu and butchered them justice.” in two days of ethnic slaughter.

Nairobi, Turkana get highest share of county fund A total of Sh226 billion will be disbursed to the counties after parliament yesterday approved the County Allocation Bill 2014. This will be an increment of Sh36 billion compared to the Sh190 billion allocated to the devolved units in the current financial year. The amount is 43 percent of the total audited revenue and the MPs praised the national government for raising the amount. Majority Leader Aden Duale

who moved the Bill urged MPs to support it saying it is aimed at spurring development at the grassroots. But the approval came as pure coincidence following the Senate’s approval of a similar Bill which means there won’t be disagreements this time round over the amount to be allocated to the counties. Proposals contained in the senate Bill indicate that senators had

approved the money before they went on recess with Nairobi and Turkana among the biggest beneficiaries for the second year running. Man hides 12 gold bars in belly

FOR REAL: A surgean displays some yellow metals pulled out from a patient’s stomach, in New Delhi, India.

Man kills brother in Mbeere miraa dispute

When a team of Indian surgeons opened up the stomach of a patient complaining of abdominal pain, they had no idea they’d extract a fortune. The patient, whose name was not released, was hiding 12 gold bars in his belly. He apparently smuggled them into India to evade import duty, police and doctors said Tuesday. Each bar weighed 33 grams, said C.S. Ramachandran, who conducted the surgery at a hospital in New Delhi on April 9. The 63-year-old patient, an Indian citizen, visited the hospital a day before with severe stomach pain and nausea. “He told us he had accidentally swallowed the cap of a plastic bottle,” Ramachandran said. Investigations could not confirm his claim. “We couldn’t make out whether they were gold bars,” the doctor said. “But yes, X-Rays

showed there was intestinal blockage, which required surgery.” On the day of surgery, stunned doctors pulled out the yellow metal from his stomach. “It was unexpected,” Ramachandran said. The hospital handed over the precious extraction to local police. The bars have since been sent to customs, which is conducting a probe, said Alok Kumar, a deputy commissioner of police. He didn’t disclose the name of the patient. Nor did he reveal which country he smuggled the gold from. The patient was discharged after the surgery, and is doing fine. India is the world’s second-largest gold market after China, according to the World Gold Council. Indian investment in gold bars recorded an increase of 16 percent in 2013 according to the World Gold Council.

protecting rhinos The Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia is planning to get a drone to track poachers and endangered animals. The conservancy has said that the miniature plane will be used in curbing cases of poaching, especially of the endangered black and northern white rhinos. Ol Pejeta is home to four of the only six northern white rhinos left in the world. “We were able to conduct successful tests in December 2013 and the drone then returned to the USA for final work,”

A quarrel over miraa ended tragically after a man hacked his brother to death in Mbeere. Mbeere police chief Bernstein Shari said the two argued bitterly over the ownership of a miraa field when the younger one attacked the elder with a panga and hacked him to death. The man, 22, attacked Joseph Murithi who was also armed with a panga. “They started fighting and the younger one killed the elder brother,” the police boss said. Each of the men did not want the other to harvest the crop which had matured in the field.

says a statement from the conservancy. “We have been told by Airware, our partners, that an operational deployment will be in place from June 2014.” Ol Pejeta has already deployed trained dogs to help in the fight against poaching. “They search and they can track and they can attack,” says ex-British Army Veterinary Corps Military Dog Instructor Daryll Pleasants, who has been working with rangers at the conservancy, Pleasants voluteered to train dogs to protect animals from poachers in Ol Pejeta.

Kenya eyes gas imports from Qatar

President Kenyatta meets Qatar Minister of Energy, Mohamed Saleh Al Sada, in Doha.

The government plans to negotiate for the importation of natural gas from Qatar for use in fuelling a power station to be constructed at the Indian Ocean. The plant is part of a government plan to add 5,000MW by 2017. The country relies on 1664MW generation capacity that is expected to rise

to 15,000MW by 2030. This was confirmed by President Uhuru Kenyatta during talks with officials from the Qatar government in his three-day visit of the Middle-East country. “The President noted that Kenya Pipeline had already signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement with Qatar Gas to

start negotiation for the supply of 1 million metric tonnes per annum of LNG to Kenya to power the 700-megawatt gas plant in Mombasa,” a statement from the President’s press office said. The Nairobi County government plans to to reduce the cost of electricity to Sh8 per kilowatt hour, down from

Sh16, in the next three to four years. This will be achieved by raising supply from cheaper energy sources and phasing out diesel generation. The government is also evaluating bids from investors interested in developing an 800 MW natural gas plant near Mombasa and a 1,000 MW coal-power plant in Lamu.

Police said the two were part of a gang that had been terrorising pedestrians at about 5.30 am when an alarm was raised. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said police on patrol responded to the distress calls. “The officers killed the two while three accomplices escaped on foot,” he said. A meeting to determine how the internet should be governed gets underway in Sao Paulo, Brazil today. The country’s president, Dilma Rousseff, organised the two-day NetMundial event following allegations that the US National Security Agency (NSA) had monitored her phone calls and emails. But campaigners have warned the move could backfire. He said he was tortured in order to confess that he was involved in the activities of Mwakenya. He claimed to have lost business during the detention and suffered economically as well as psychologically. The Attorney General had denied the claims saying police officers acted professionally. Majanja ruled that evidence showed the petitioner was in police custody and suffered.

State action plan over fake academic colleges The government plans to take action against institutions issuing fake degrees in order to protect learners from rogue instructors. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has said his ministry will table a Bill in Parliament that seeks to harmonise all examinations. The law will also ensure the quality of education remains standard across all institutions of higher learning. The Kenya Qualification Bill seeks to

establish an overall body to be known as the National Qualification Authority which will develop a framework to coordinate systems of national education assessment. The authority will also get rid of unaccredited tertiary institutions that have been blamed for the rise in fake certificates. “Cases of students possessing fake academic credentials from unaccredited institutions which cannot secure them employment will

be gone once this authority is in place,” Prof Kaimenyi said. A survey whose findings were released last year showed that dubious colleges were minting millions by swindling unsuspecting students who end up with fake papers. Examinations bodies such as the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) and the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (Kasneb) will also come under a national body that will approve

the quality of their exams. Prof Kaimenyi said the move will weed out inconsistencies in the quality of education. The minister was speaking at the Kenya Teachers Training College (KTTC) in Gigiri Nairobi on Tuesday. Parliamentary Committee on Education chairperson Sabina Chege vowed to marshal colleagues for the support of the proposed Bill once it is tabled before the House.

Sri Lanka to deport woman over Buddha tattoo A British woman will be deported from Sri Lanka for spotting a Buddha tattoo on her arm. Naomi Michelle Coleman has been detained at a deportation centre after she arrived on a flight from India on Monday. A police spokesman said she was arrested for “hurting

Textile firm to create more jobs for Kenyans

Lifeworks Shukrani, a social enterprise that empowers women and elderly orphans, says it will continue helping create employment for those in need. The company, which assists job seekers by developing their skills and linkages to economic opportunities, has set up a project that provides customers with new kikoi products. Lifeworks Shukrani set up a small textile production facility in 2007 at Mariakani to

manufacture items from kikoi materials. The products were to be supplied to companies, public institutions and notfor-profit organisations across the country. The company hopes to grow into a bigger brand in the fight against unemployment. Lifeworks says 90 per cent of the 660,000 jobs created in 2013 were from the informal sector. Ture Boru, Lifeworks’ Head of Business Development, says the project targets to employ

more staff in coming months and will make an announcement once positions are available. The company also manufactures napkin sets, oven mitts, table mats, shopping bags, and beach towels. It faces stiff competition from cheaper versions of the products from China and India. Lifeworks has employed tens of employees through its value chain. The Kenya textile sector has potential to generate over

500,000 new jobs across its value chain in the next year. Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation and Enterprise Development Adan Abdulla Mohamed says the sector is still untapped. He says the government is seeking ways of fighting competition from global rivals. The move will create more jobs for Kenyans but will open consumers to higher prices of locally made textile goods.

About one million Kenyans will find jobs as the National Construction Authority (NCA) moves to train builders and craft workers for improved workmanship. NCA has partnered with the Housing Finance Foundation, a local real estate company, for the setting up an institute that will train artisans who will offer capable and experienced workforce. About 11 million youth in Kenya are unemployed, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With thousands more looking for jobs every year, chances of securing a position in the job market are always slim. NCA hopes to make one of the biggest moves in creating employment the country has ever witnessed. The announcement follows another

by Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation, Adan Mohamed, which said the textile industry could create 500,000 new jobs. “We have several artisans out there with skills who have been forgotten,” said NCA Executive Director Daniel Manduku. “We will access their competencies, train them and certify them because we need a welltrained and competent workforce to propel this nation as per vision 2030,” he said. “We have seen companies from outside bringing in their artisans yet we have idle youth who pose security and other challenges facing our society,” said Housing Finance Foundation Executive Director, Winnie Kathurima. “We need to give capacity to the young people to make them productive,” she said.

consumerrights Bill shields customers from crooked dealers The Consumer Protection Bill has set up regulations to protect consumers from businesses that hide vital information. Under the new rules, banks, consultancies, and insurance firms are barred from withholding information that may be useful to the consumer. “There has been a lot of concern about incomplete information by some banks and insurance firms, this will be no more because the law is now clear on this,” says Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) Secretary General, Stephen Mutoro. Speaking after the launch of the Bill, Mutoro said many customers pay for goods without proper information need for informed decisions. The US Embassy said before the law was passed, Kenyans were dealing with unreliable goods and services since they did not fully understand the law. The Embassy says many Kenyans have been losing millions of shillings because they do not know that they had the right to receive the higher standards of quality. The Bill, which also includes services like entertainment, transport, broadcasting, tourism and education, states that all providers should improve on the disclosure of information to customers. Those who withhold important information on their goods and services will face a prison term of not more than five years.

Equity smart card to save consumers time, money

Equity Bank customers will be able to use the banks MasterCards to pay for goods using a simple ‘touch and go’ mechanism in supermarkets across the country staring next month. The bank will give 300,000 smartphones to supermarket to be used as checkout points for those using the MasterCards. By simply tapping the

cards onto the smartphones, a customer will be able to pay for goods without having to spend time waiting to receive their balance. According to Equity, the new card will be a cheaper and more convenient way to pay for items since ATM withdrawals cost money and checkout counters take up a lot of time. “Our new MasterCard ATM

cards are tap-and-go,” the bank CEO James Mwangi said following the announcement earlier this week. Mwangi said the card will also offer a faster, more secure alternative to the outdated magnetic strip debit cards, which can easily be duplicated by fraudsters. The Kenya Banker’s Association (KBA) says more than six million Kenyans

are at risk of getting defrauded since they still use the outdated ATM cards. Banks have made moves to replace the old cards with Equity being among the first to make the switch. Local banks lost close to Sh1.6 billion to fraud in 2013. While the banks are required to replace the cash in the event of theft, customers who plan to make withdraws, especially

in cases of an emergency, find their money gone at the worst possible moments. Replacing the cash can take up to 5 working days, depending on the situation. A number of supermarket chains already allow buyers to pay for their goods using Equity ATM cards at no extra charge but Equity’s is set to be the fastest alternative so far.

by his father, he has set out to become an authority on the subject of seed breeding. “I got most of the initial knowledge from him as he was an expert in the business,” Muthengi says. He grows orange, cashew nut and lemon seeds among others. He says the business has taught him the value of patience. His seed varieties, which are hard to

come by, now take half the time to mature compared to other types in the market. After the first year of grafting, Muthengi’s plants take about three years to produce their fruits, four less than the average plants. Working with the Kenya Agricultural research Institute (KARI), Muthengi has managed to get in touch with many customers from across the region.

Pengo Loans, a US micro-lending company based in Nairobi has found a way to bypass the need for collateral in borrowing from mainstream lenders. Pengo, which connects borrowers to investors, gives long-term loans of between Sh870,000 ($10,000) and Sh8,700,000 ($100,000) to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Small businesses in emerging markets like Kenya need a total of at least Sh65 billion to function, according to a financial report on banking in developing countries. Pengo, which translates to “gap” in English, gives the loans to businesses that have been in operation for more than 18 months and have had a good track record. The lender has funded entrepreneurs like beauty salon owner, Maureen Murunga, who needed the money to open a third shop.

investing The value of investment managers We all want to be investors and be successful in our financial goals. To start investing for the long run, you must go through a three-step process. First, you must know how to manage your cash. You will only start investing if you spend less than you make. Second, you need to save for a rainy; cash or equivalents readily available in case of emergency. Third, you can then start saving for a mid/long term financial goal. Many people lack knowledge to make the right investment decisions. Investment advisors assist individuals to set investment goals, ways of achieving them and can be found at management companies such as Amana Capital. A fund manager offers unit trust funds, personal pension plans, emergency fund and other products that sets one on a path to fiscal freedom. Working with a fund manager such as Amana Capital is a safe and profitable way to start.

Cocaine through the mouth is deadliest WEDNESday, April 23, 2014

Traditionally, coacaine was abused through injection or smoking . However, a new method of getting a high from the drug, by swallowing, is slowly becoming popular in Kenya and the world over. Users either swallows cocaine tablets or rubs powder on their gums (gumming). The method is said to produce a numbing effect. Ingesting cocaine can cause severe bowel gangrene due to reduced blood flow. Continued gumming also eats away at the gums & bone leading to loss of teeth. Oral intake of cocaine paired with alcohol

intake puts users at the risk of death. The liver combines

cocaine with alcohol to form a third substance called coca-ethylene,

which causes a more significant rise in heart rate and blood pressure

than cocaine, hence easily leads to heart damage.

medicalmiracle Surgeons make vagina transplant We are genuinely living in is a world of possibilities. A world where science is being used as a tool for physical body restoration. Researchers and medics from Mexico City carried out the first successful vagina transplant. On April 10 2014, the scientists reported a positive outcome of the operation on four teenage girls, who underwent the procedure in 2005 to 2008 at the Federico Gomez Children’s Hospital. hey suffered from a rare genetic condition in which the vagina and uterus are either missing or undergrown. The girls aged 13 to 18, at the time, attested to the

normal functioning of their new organs. They experience usual levels of desire, arousal, satisfaction and orgasm. Scientists and researchers developed the vaginal organs from the patients’ muscles and cells extracted from the genital area. The retrieved cells were grown and immersed into a biodegradable substance that is later formed into the shape of a vagina for each patient. The organs were inserted into the patient’s bodies connecting them to the nerves and blood vessels. The biodegradable material is then absorbed into the body cells.

Power shower will cut your water bills A power shower will never disappoint you. You relax in the bath with low pressure or inconsistent flow of water. The shower enjoys an in-built pump which strengthens water flow even under low pressure. When the incoming water is in slightly lower pressure, the pump will boost it to maintain the flow. Power showers rely on gravity to relay water to the nozzle. They do not rely on electricity to move the water.

Murals trigger conversations with visitors

high value: Murals by Kenyan artists. artist Kegogi Museveni says free hand drawings can enhance the aesthetic value of rooms.

smarttool

Murals are pieces of art that trigger conversations with visitors. They also add value to the old and casual well-furnished uniform paint that we are used to. Kegogi Museveni, a renowned mural artist in Nyamira County, says if carefully chosen, free-hand or computer-aided drawings improve the aesthetic value of rooms. Fascinating images, especially wildlife, arouse curiosity among visitors and children. “A picture of a hare or tortoise will evoke memories of a witty story children have read or they have heard. This can be a kick of a captivating conversation,” says Musev-

eni. Murals allow you to harmonise architectural elements into natural features like mountains, rivers, the sun or the sky and how they interact with human beings on the walls or hard copy for hanging,” he says. They capture a true expression of thought, emotions as they give you freedom of choice of what to draw or which room to place it. But that does not mean you have all the latitude to haphazardly pour your images. This will be disastrous to your room and may disorient you and visitors. This means they have to interact with basic house décor and between themselves.

The fun’s in feeling kidnapped

Hot air ballon walk not for the faint hearted skywalk: A man walks a tightrope from one hot air balloon to another

Tight rope walking is terrifying on its own. Trying to walk across a chasm knowing one wrong step would send you plunging to your death is something only for the insane or the suicidal. Or maybe not. Not if you have seen hot air balloon walking. In this stunt, the walker attempts to walk a tight rope fastened on two hot air balloons with only a parachute for safety.

quoteit

Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.

The walker will decide how high above the ground the balloons will be. The world record for this act is 4000 feet. Ordinarily, hot air balloons are flown at a modest height of 100 feet above the ground extreme weather conditions. So now imagine one floating 4000 feet high. The mere thought of being getting that high up in the clouds in a flimsy contraption like a hot air

balloon is not very prudent. Actually getting out and attempting to walk a tightrope to another balloon does not sound very clever. The walker must think so too as he/ she feels the chill and has one look down below. The walker probably regrets the decision when the rope starts wobbling under his first step but by then it’s too late to turn back. Besides, his crew and friends are

cheering them on so he’d feel encouraged. All he can do is to keep reminding himself not to look down. If the walker can’t maintain his balance and topples over, he has a parachute to get him safely back down on firm ground. Andy Lewis, successfully made his way across a 12-metre high line suspended between two hot air balloons, 4000ft above the ground.

Seeing how boring people’s lives were, a Detroit man, Adam Thick, came up with an idea known as Extreme Kidnapping to bring some thrill to the dull lives of the Motor City residents. Thick’s idea was inspired by the 1996 movie ‘The Game’ starring Michael Douglas. Extreme Kidnapping, a thrill that essentially creates a thin line between trauma and pleasure, is known to invoke fear in the kidnapped since that is its main drive. The staged-managed kidnapping sport involves the use of stunt guns, scary masks and pain. Some of them ‘kidnappers’ have criminal backgrounds. Thick says the essence of extreme kidnapping is that the victim has to feel like he/she is really kidnapped. “If you don’t feel like you’re really being kidnapped and your life is in danger, then we’re not doing our job,” he says. Thick and his henchmen handcuff, slap, duct-tape and even soak their victims. For just $1500 (Sh129000), a journalist Drew Magary who was looking for fun was placed in a dingy basement and was given the full treatment of a kidnap victim, including being forced to pee in a bottle. “This service caters to the extreme sports adventurer who is bored with what’s currently available. This takes it to a whole other level,” says Thick about his thrill.

Gor boss can hardly wait for tricky Tusker tie Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson is looking forward to a tricky encounter with defending champions Tusker FC in the semi-finals of Kenya Premier League Top 8 next month. The draw conducted on Wednesday will see AFC Leopards take on Kenya Commercial Bank- who bundled out Ulinzi Stars in the other semi-final clash. “Tusker will be big; not as big as arch-rivals AFC Leopards. Its matches like those that we look forward to,” said Williamson. “The match will be tricky given that both sets of teams play attacking kind of football. For us, it will be a matter of trying to avenge last year’s

defeat in the same competition,” he said. “We know they have a good squad and are performing well and also topping Kenya Premier League standings. We are prepared for the match as our intentions is to win more trophies.” “There is quite some time from now to next month, there will be the league and the Gotv Shield cup competition, we simply have to be ready,” he said. Both first leg matches will be played on May 21 at Nyayo Stadium with return leg fixtures set for the same venue on June 4. In case of no winners in the two-legged affair, penalties will decide qualifiers for the final.

Kloop not keen on Man United job Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Kloop says he is not interested in taking the hot seat at Manchester United after the Premier League champions sacked David Moyes on Tuesday. The Scot was sacked on Tuesday morning only 10 months into a six-year contract at Old Trafford. He presided over the club’s worst campaign in the Premier League era. Klopp was seen as a favourite to succeed Moyes this summer even after signing a new contract committing him to Dortmund until 2018 in October. “Man Utd is a great club and I feel very familiar with

their wonderful fans. But my commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable,” he said. Klopp has established himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after coaches after leading Dortmund to backto-back Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final. Other front-runners to succeed Moyes are Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone and Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti. Van Gaal is also wanted by Tottenham to succeed Tim Sherwood, but the Dutchman was taking time to weigh up his options having been linked with United.

Matano’s focus is on rebuilding Ulinzi Ulinzi Stars coach Robert Matano is almost certain his side needs rebuilding for the 2014 season. Speaking after yet another defeat in the Top Eight tournament at the hands of Kenya Commercial Bank, Matano said the team needs new blood in the current campaign. “We are more focused on the league and upcoming fixtures. We play Bandari today a match we so much need to win, a solitary win in the league is not something to smile about,” said the former Tusker FC coach. “Losing to KCB was not an easy thing. I know what the players are going through. That is why we have to bring in new players if chance be,” he said. “The loss to KCB is behind our backs and we are now focusing on the league. We only need to be sharper in front of goal to utilize the chances we get,” he said. “I am certain results will come at one point, only problem is that we want them urgently,” he said. The soldiers sit 13th on the log, two points shy of 10th placed Bandari. Victory will see them leapfrog the opposition.

Top five greatest boxers of all time WEDNESday, APRIL 23, 2014

VETERAN: Boxer Muhammad Ali knocks out an opponent. He was active in the period between 1960 and and 1981.

The ‘ideal’ final as Real take on Bayern The wait is finally over. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are sharpening swords before they clash in what will be, so far, the biggest game of the season. While the Germans aim at becoming the first team to win two straight Champions League trophies, the Merengues have been starving for Europe’s most coveted title for a while now. No matter what, we’re in for an absolute cracker. Tonight will see Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, the two European giants, meet for the first time in two years at the UEFA Champions League semi-finals

first leg. It’s the first time that Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola face each other as opposing managers even though they have already had numerous encounters against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively. What makes it even more interesting is that in those past meetings against upcoming rivals, they hold an almost immaculate record. Ancelotti can brag about never having lost against Bayern Munich in any of the previous six occasions he stumbled against the German giants.

Boxing records, ability, talent, popularity, competition, showmanship, and cultural significance in their era has led to a list of all-time best boxers as seen below. The true greatest boxers of all time should represent a blend of all the attributes. 1 Muhammad Ali Record: 56 wins 37 KOs, five losses (56-5) Boxing Era: 1960-1981 In every aspect of the sport, Muhammad Ali was electrifying. Ali was an exciting, outspoken, undefeated boxing phenomenon in his prime. He was by far boxing’s greatest entertainer. Ali would often taunt his rivals, fake punches, and do his trademark shuffles in the ring. He was also just as good a boxing promoter as he was a boxer; his loud mouth trash talk, and rhyming antics were truly larger than life. They were as well unprecedented in the sport. 2) Joe Louis

Record: Won 66 Lost 3, 52 KOs (66-3) Boxing Era: 1934-19 Known as “The Brown Bomber”, Joe Louis was an US icon. He was clearly a shining star head and shoulders above the rest in his time. He couldn’t lose. Joe Louis only had one legitimate loss against Germany’s Max Schmeling which he later avenged in a sensational and historical 1st round KO. 3) Sugar Ray Robinson Record: 173 wins, 109 KOs19 losses, 6 draws, 2 no contests Boxing Era: 1940-1965 Many consider Robinson to be the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all time. Just boxing prowess considered, he might be. Robinson may be the best combination of boxing talent wrapped up in one man that the world has ever seen. He was a freakish enigma who somehow possessed awesome KO power in his punch, lightning fast speed, outstanding footwork and dexterity as well as a solid chin.

4) Jack Johnson Record: Won 73 (40 KO), Lost 13, Draw 9, NC, 2 Boxing Era: 1897-1945 Before Muhammad Ali or Roy Jones Jr, the biggest brash, bold trash talker around was the first African-American Heavyweight Champ Jack Johnson. Being the first African-American Heavyweight champ alone should secure him a spot on any top ten listing. For over a decade, nobody could beat him. 5) Mike Tyson Record: 50 wins, 44 KOs, 6 losses, 2NC (50-6) Boxing Era: 1985-2005 Let’s just be real; Tyson is snubbed, misplaced, or left out all together on almost all the lists I’ve seen. We’ve forgotten what he was and moved on. It’s outrageous and unfair. There is absolutely no other boxer in boxing history that has amassed such a legendary fear factor and buzz in the sport than “Iron” Mike Tyson.

At the time, the mark was almost half a second quicker than any other performance previously recorded for the distance. Having been side-lined by injury in 2013, Blake returned to competition to run 400m in Kingston in February, before claiming 200m victory at the UWI Invitational in March with

20.49. The 24-year-old, who also claimed Olympic 100m and 200m silver behind Bolt in London, will be joined by the likes of Olympic long

jump champion Greg Rutherford and US Paralympic silver 100m medallist Richard Browne at the Manchester event.

BACK ON THE TRACK: Yohan Blake will be racing in Britain.

No excuse for Aussie Open loss, says Nadal

RIVALRY: Bayern Munich’s Philipp Lahm takes on Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo in a past match. The two teams will be playing each other in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

World No 1 Rafael Nadal has refused to blame his shock defeat in the Australian Open final in January to Stanislas Wawrinka as excuse for the loss in Monaco last week. The 27-year-old Spaniard, the top seed for this week’s Barcelona Open, lost in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters to compatriot David Ferrer. It was his earliest loss in the event since 2003 and came 12

months after his eight-year winning streak at the event was ended in the final by Novak Djokovic. “I cannot continue using the Australia Open final as an excuse. That is past,” said Nadal. The Spaniard’s campaign in Barcelona starts in the second round against either Russian Nikolay Davydenko or countryman Albert Ramos today. “In Monte Carlo, I should have

achieved more. No one can win all the time and I’m no exception. I’ve lost before and I’ll lose again. But I’m not bitter or mad at myself,” he said. Nadal, winner of 13 Grand Slam titles, said there was no disgrace in losing to veteran Ferrer, who is ranked sixth in the world. “He’s one of the best players in the world,” said Nadal. “I didn’t play a good match, he deserved to win.”

Defense-playing Mourinho happy with Atletico draw Chelsea Manager Jose Mourihno was a happy man as his side held Atletico Madrid to a barren draw on Tuesday evening in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. The Blues managed just two shots on target while staying back to stop the Atletico attack in what was described as 19th century football. Mourinho deployed three defensive midfielders in his starting 11. “It wasn’t the result I wanted before kick-off, but I didn’t want to start the second leg a goal down either,” Mouinho said. “A goalless draw is not a positive result for a team playing the

second leg at home, but it will do. Mourinho was pleased with how Chelsea’s defence, which lost Captain John Terry and Peter Cech to injuries, stopped Atletico’s attack. “Atletico were frustrated, whereas usually they are the ones who frustrate other teams,” Mourinho said. “My side had a solid performance, we played in a way that irritated them. Atletico Madrid beat Milan and Barcelona here, while we were able to control the game.” Atletico failed to score for the first time in 11 games in this season’s competition.
