Worsened by decisions of unscrupulous doctors in private hospitals, the number of operations in the country are on a steady rise.

The Demographic Health Survey, 2003, indicates that CS operations constitutes four per cent of all births in hospitals.

Medics’ Caesarean warning From Page 1 But World Health Organisation data contained in the World Health Statistics for 2013 shows an increase of the surgeries by six per cent. Many surgeries in private hospitals were not captured in the report. Dr Protus Wafula Nyongesa, a Nairobi-based gynaecologist, says mothers regularly ask for CS to keep their pelvic regions intact.

“Young mothers request for Caesarean Section because they want to preserve the integrity of their reproductive systems,” says the surgeon.

The consultant says many fear Urinary Incontinence, a condition where a mother may fail to control urine flow because of weakening of muscles after natural birth.

“Natural birth weakens pelvic muscles among some mothers, making it difficult to control urine. Very little pressure such as sneezing or coughing will cause them release urine, making it an uncomfortable experience for them,” says Dr Nyongesa.

The problem may also manifest itself after menopause but can be overcome through exercises with the help of an obstetrician.

He says other young mothers in their first pregnancy prefer the method because it may be less painful due to anaesthesia administered. Others like it because it cuts prolonged labour periods.

Mothers who have low tolerance to pain may want CS as a cure to the pains of pushing the

baby. It comes handy for mothers who may be too weak to sustain the pushing and saves the life of a child in a weak mother.

But the doctor warns of severe consequences that may arise after the operation. He says anaesthesia administered to reduce the pain may lead to a weaker backbone.

“If anaesthesia injection is through the spinal cord, the mother may be too weak to wake up and could die,” the doctor says.

Like other operations, Dr Nyongesa says excessive loss of blood may lead to hypertension. The condition can be checked by blood transfusion but in severe cases, a mother may die if the loss reduces oxygen supply to the brain, causing its damage.

A first CS pregnancy mean subsequent ones will be the same because if one goes natural, the scar may rapture or tear.

A sepsis infection may also develop from the wound sustained during the operation or an accidental other wound that doctors may not pick. Sepsis is a condition where bacteria invades an open wound, leading to multiple other infections.

The body’s immune system is weakened as blood clots reduce blood pressure. This may deprive vital organs of oxygen leading to failure and eventual death.

Certain conditions may warrant operation, including if the passage for the child is too small for its head.

South African minister dimisses Kenyan swimmers as ‘pathetic’ South Africa’s ANC may apologise to Kenya after its Sports and Recreational Minister Fikile Mbalula described Kenyan swimmers as pathetic.

The new law now means such customary marriages are recognized.

Rajeev Suri takes over as Nokia CEO Mobile company Nokia has named a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rajeev Suri.

The 46-year old was in charge of the Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN), the equipment unit of the firm. The company was sold to Microsoft and has since registered a 10 per cent growth in year-on-year first quarter profit.

The sale led to the former chief executive, Stephen Elop to leave the firm and assume the executive vice president’s post at the Microsoft Devices Group.

This presents a vast market for their products.

Greenlight Planet has so far sold over 1.8 million solar lamps. The group has 9 offices globally with more than 700 permanent staff and 6,000 village business associates. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) says 6 million Kenyans will use solar lights by the end of 2015.

Bill allows consumers to sue firms over offensive ads A Bill protecting the rights of consumers has been passed into law.

Under the Bill, Kenyan consumers are entitled to advertising that is honest, fair and decent.

The law, which is enforced under Chapter Four of the Bill of Rights, states that advertisers are not allowed to post, publish or broadcast information that is viewed as overly offensive to the public.

It ban the use of vulgar or indecent material for the sake of selling goods or services.

Full frontal nudity, for instance, is the kind of advertising that can be viewed as too controversial for public viewing.

Any member of the public who finds an ad offensive is allowed

to sue the responsible company. However, many cases involving offensive content can be solved if the responsible company issues apology and removes the content in question.

“Any person, who without lawful excuse, sends or procures a drawing or picture of a threatening, obscene or grossly offensive character commits an offence and may be liable for a fine not exceeding Sh300,000, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both,” says Chapter 411 A of the information and Communication Act. These laws are expected to make companies more responsible in designing adverts.

Duo jump off the Burj in a record plunge

Last week, a pair of base (building, antenna, span, and earth) jumpers broke the world record by leaping off the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, the tallest building in the world.

Fred Fugen and Vince Reffet are the men who broke the previous record of 2,204 feet, by plunging off the 2,717-foot structure and dropping for more than half a mile down.

They prepared for their record breaking leap by spending time up a Swiss mountain to adapt to the altitude.

The men were not the first to base jump from that building but they had a special platform built to add an extra 500 feet to the tower so they could break the world record.

Base jumping involves

leaping from fixed objects into dead space, with absolutely no noise or wind resistance with the use of a parachute to break the fall.

Because the jump starts from a standstill, one gets to experience the full effect of acceleration towards terminal velocity.

Base jumping is one of the most dangerous sports on earth, with the fatality list standing at 228 deaths since April 1981, according to the online “BASE Fatality List”.

The safety gear only holds one parachute, so if there is a malfunction, there is no backup.

Jumpers, therefore, take time to pack the gear very carefully, The parachute is released at between 200 500ft high.

A rare dose of talented Kenyan sports families A talented athlete is a rare thing.

Perhaps this is why athletes are paid obscene sums of money for millions to watch them play every week.

Yet, even more uncommon than a talented athlete is a family of truly talented athletes. Below are some of Kenya’s bestknown sibling talents: The Emonyis Kenyans will be looking forward to the eighth edition of the International Rugby Board Sevens World Series in Glasgow, Scotland, where the Emonyi siblings are expected to dazzle.

These are celebrated former captain Humphrey Khayange, current skipper Collins Injera and the sensational Michael Agevi. Theirs is a household name.

The Wanyamas Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, who turns up for English Premier League side Southampton FC, and elder brother McDonald Mariga are sons of former Kenya international Noah Wanyama. Their other brothers Thomas and Slyvester play in the Kenyan premier league. Their younger sister is a professional basketballer in the US. The Makutos Three amazing siblings, the Makutos, enjoy healthy rivalry in volleyball and are known to have taken the game to another level. Asha, who is the firstborn, is a left attacker playing for Kenya Pipeline. Luke Makuto is right attacker-cum central blocker playing for General Service Unit, Evelyn for Kenya Prisons

and Violet for Kenya Pipeline.

Their Brothers Douglas and Elphas turn out for Malava High School. Evelyn is a prisons corporal and she says the family success in volleyball is God-given because even their 12-year-old last born, Philip, is already a budding star at primary school level.

The Dunfords David and Jason Dunford are the best swimmers Kenya has produced and have achieved varying degrees of fame. Their father, Martin, was a Kenya Swimming Federation chairman and patron of Nairobi Amateur Swimming Association.

Their elder brother, Robert, is a rugby player. The two have reached many swimming finals and won many awards in local, regional, international scenes.

IOC worry over Rio 2016 preps

International Olympic Committee Vice-President John Coates on Wednesday piled pressure on 2016 host, Rio de Janeiro, describing its preparations as the worst he has seen.

The Australian, who has made six visits to Rio as a member of the IOC Coordination Commission

that oversees the games, painted a gloomy picture of the games’ preparations progress terming them as of “critical concern”.

He told an Olympic Forum in Sydney that IOC had been forced to take “unprecedented” action, embedding experts in Rio’s Organising Committee to ensure the sporting

spectacle proceeds.

“IOC has formed a special task force to try and speed up preparations but the situation is critical on the ground,” he said. “It is the worst I have experienced. The IOC has adopted a more hands-on role, it is unprecedented for the IOC but there is no Plan B.”
