Tycoon plays down China’s investment slowdown Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, will not lose sleep if China slows down on investments in Africa.

Varsity freshers may miss out on Helb loans The 2012 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) graduates who are due to join public universities this year may miss out on Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans to cater for fees.

The state lender that sponsors students in public universities may lack enough funds after the government failed to increase its allocation.

The government has issued only Sh5.7 billion for students in public universities in the next one year

against demands for about Sh8 billion.

Continuing students are expected to benefit from a Sh5.5 billion grant.

This means students set to join the scheme later this year may lack funds.

“Those already undertaking studies consume about Sh5.5 billion and we need more money to sponsor freshers set to join the programme,” Helb Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera said.

Helb estimates that an additional Sh2.4 billion will be required to sponsor 70 000 students set to be approved to join the programme.

“This is what creates the deficit,” Mr Ringera said.

Mt. Kenya University gets green light to train doctors

Children across the country will soon have to be immunized against the Rotavirus, Head of Directorate of Preventive Health, William Maina has said. The virus is the leading of severe diarrhea among infants and young children. If left untreated, it can be fatal and is responsible for the death of about 500,000 children across the world every year.

Speaking during an immunization briefing at the Stanley Hotel in Nairobi, Maina explained that the government would add the Rotavirus vaccine to the standard list of immunizations, thereby making it mandatory. “This vaccine will aim to protect more than 1.4 million children from diarrhea,” he said.

He noted that the Health ministry was committed to eliminating and controlling preventable diseases.

“It is critically important for the media to embrace their active role in educating the public about the value of immunization,” Maina said.

Mount Kenya University has been given the green lights to start training doctors in the country.

The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (MPDB) says they have inspected the institution and are satisfied with its facilities and infrastructure to carry out the training.

In a press statement to newsrooms, MPDB chairman Prof George Magoha said some 50 medical students are expected to be admitted to the institution this September.

“The board having inspected the institution is satisfied that the university has the requisite infrastructure and facilities relevant to offer this course,” he said in the statement.

US recommends more funds to combat terror The US has called for more funding for the security sector to deal with the threat of terrorsim.

In a report released on Wednesday by the Department of State in Washington DC, the US also recommends that security officers be given specialised training to deal with terrorism.

The report also calls on the government to end orruption in the ministry of Interior as one way of sealing all loopholes against terrorists.

Further, the report has called on the government to take serious efforts to address radicalization of youths and extremism which are listed as some of the factors hampering the war on terror.

“Mismanagement, corruption, lack of coordination and capacity on border control systems hampered the ability of law enforcement officers to avert potential terror threats,” said the report that profiled country by country on Kenya’s fight against terrorism.

“Operational effectiveness was sometimes impeded by poor coordination among and within police, intelligence officers and military forces,” it further notes.

The report recommended a clear command and control to make the police more responsive to terror threats.

Most of these inadequacies are said to have emerged during the Westgate attack in September last year that claimed over 70 lives.

The report singled out the elite General Service Unit Recce Company for praise.

Bomb blast kills dozens in Abuja ahead of major world meeting A blast on the outskirts of Nigeria’s capital Abuja has killed at least a dozen people, witnesses and police sources say. Thursday’s car bombing hit the suburb of Nyanya,

close to the site of an attack at a bus station on April 14 that killed at least 75 people.

Besides the dead, at least 19 people were wounded in the blast, the Associated

Press news agency reported quoting police sources. A correspondent from the AFP news agency reported seeing nine bodies that had been brought from scene, while a

witness at the same hospital, who sought anonymity, reported seeing seven more bodies. Boko Haram, who the blast was immediately linked to, is an armed group

fighting what it calls Western influence and wants to form an Islamic state in Africa’s largest oil producer country.

It has claimed responsibility for the April 14 blast in

Nyanya and threatened further attacks.

The blast came a week before Abuja was due to host the World Economic Forum on Africa.

Rotich sets Sh2.3b for recruitment of teachers The government is set to hire 5,000 more teachers in the next one year to counter shortages in public schools.

The National Treasury has allocated Sh2.3 billion for the recruitment of additional teachers and another Sh2 billion to fund promotions.

The move has however elicited objections from teachers who have asked the National Assembly to increase the allocation.

The employment and payment of teachers has been a thorny issue and led to last year’s three- week strike. The teachers then demanded that the government honours the 1997 agreement for the payment of allowances as pledged in a deal between Knut and Teachers Service Commission. The strike was called off after the government agreed to honour the terms. Knut was demanding Sh6.6 billion for promotion and Sh18 billion for employing 40,000 of the proposed 70,000 teachers.

In their proposal, Kuppet had handed a Sh20 billion proposal for hiring and promotions. Knut also accused the government of failing to support the improvement of academic standards.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked the media to present accurate information to the public and focus on development issues in their reporting.

Speaking today during the Press Freedom Day celebrations at KICC, Nairobi, the President said journalists must understand the law and observe it in their professional undertakings.

“It is your role to know and observe the laws and keep the code of conduct,” he said.

The President said the press should present a true picture of Africa without misrepresentation.

He expressed displeasure with a report that appeared in a local daily saying military boss General Julius Karangi’s term had been extended and that he will not be retiring on July 15 this year.

The President asked the media to defend African values and initiate a robust debate towards development.

“The media has the responsibility of contributing to development by initiating a robust debate towards national development and

social values,” the President said.

He said the media have been central in shaping the country’s history and called for focus in steering the development agenda.

He said Articles 33, 34, 35 of the constitution envisages a more free press. The government has created the required bodies to control the media but will protect press freedom.

The President asked news reporters to take part in corporate social responsibility activities by disseminating information on HIV/Aids and other vital issues affecting society.

He said the digital migration is important if Kenya is to provide diverse content and pledged his government support to the project.

“Digital migration will provide a platform for extra information content. There is no reason for not featuring environmental, agricultural and other issues affecting the people,” the President said.

He said his government will guarantee free access and airing of content that conforms to the new platform.

Slain officer to be buried

One of the two police officers killed in a blast outside Pangani Police Station was buried on Thursday with his colleague set to be buried today. Officials said Constable Francis Murage was buried at his Laikipia home while the remains of Samwel Cheptuk will be interred at his Eldama Ravine home.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said preparations for the burial are complete.

“We are going to show our last respects to the departed heroes. They had made huge positive impacts in their work,” he said. Two other men who were suspected to have been terrorists were killed alongside the officers during the April 23 explosion. The blast occurred when the two officers flagged down a vehicle after it made a U-turn on a road near the police station for the inspection of the car and suspects.

The Kenya Wildlife Service has been allocated Sh1.8 billion for the 2014/2015 financial year in what is expected to boost the war on poaching. The agency has blamed the rise in poaching activities on sophisticated equipment used by criminals.

The department has called for additional funding to enable the organization acquire modern gadgets to match poachers. During a ceremony when the budget estimates were released last month, Environment, Water and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Judy Wakhungu said the ministry plans to buy sophisticated surveillance equipment to counter those used by poachers.

“We want our technology enhanced because some of the poachers are equipped with bulletproof vests and hi-tech night vision goggles which enable ease of movement in the dark,” she said.

The agency is expected to purchase drones to boost fast surveillance of vast conservancies that usually take rangers months with vehicles or by foot.

The non-human flown aeroplanes will be mounted with video cameras that record activities in the parks. The recordings are later analysed by specialists in a central control room.

The Geographical Positioning System (GPS) application will be used to track rhinos and elephants in the wild.

Night vision googles will assist rangers achieve better vision during night patrols and enhance location of animals and poachers.

The ministry late last month recruited about 1,000 rangers to boost the current 2,800 which has been perceived to be overwhelmed by the task of protecting 33 conservancies spread across the country.

High fibre diet ‘vital for heart attack recovery’ Eating plenty of fibre can improve longterm recovery from heart attack, a study has revealed.

Researchers in the US say heart attack survivors are more likely to remain alive for as long as nine years if they maintain a high-fibre diet during their recovery.

In a study published in the British Medical Journal, the researchers linked every 10 grams per day increase in fibre

intake to a 15 per cent drop in death risk for the survivors.

“Dietary fibre improves blood pressure and cholesterol,” the experts noted.

Most people consume an average of 14 grams of fibre a day, the researchers recommend 38 grams a day for the patients. Wholemeal bread, root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, fruits such as bananas and apples and

cereals were listed as some of the good sources of the diet. The researchers also linked a low fibre diet with constipations and gut diseases such as bowel cancer. They also said it could have implications for heart health.

The researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health analysed data from two large US studies involving more than 4,000 men and women who

had survived a first heart attack and had provided information about their usual diet via questionnaires.

The researchers then followed them for nine years after their heart attacks.

Some 682 women and 451 men died during that period. Findings showed that chances of survival depended with fibre intake which was mostly from breakfast cereals.

Textile industry gets high profile visitors A delegation of world leading textile and garment companies is in the country in a move expected to create job opportunities in the clothes export sector.

The delegation, comprising 40 global companies, is led by high ranking executives from PVH and VF Corporation, two of the world’s largest apparel manufacturing companies.

They arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday as part of a tour organised by the Ministry of Industrialisation and Enterprise Development.

“The Ministry of Industrialisation will host the tour as part of our mandate to foster industrial development and job creation,” said Ministry Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed.

Diamond trade in Cote d’Ivoire gets UN nod The UN Security Council (UNSC) has lifted a ban on Ivory Coast’s diamond trade following the country’s push to legally export the mineral.

While lifting the ban, the body praised the country’s overall devotion to the regulation of diamond sale.

The western African nation was also hailed for restoring peace and stability after two of its worst conflicts.

“The measures preventing the importation by any state of all rough diamonds from Cote d’Ivoire (has been terminated) in light of progress made,” the UN Security Council said.

Background The Ivory Coast was banned from exporting diamonds in 2005 after a failed coup against President Laurent Gbagbo plunged the country into civil war in 2002. The restrictions were set because diamond sales were funding the purchase of guns for rebels.

Impact The move will provide about 200,000 job opportunities for the jobless Ivorians given that it is under-exploiting the diamond mining sector, the European Union said.

The mining will also help stabilise the country’s security as it will be allowed to buy arms.

Bank gives clients option to withdraw cash using phones Commonwealth Bank customers in Australia will be able to withdraw cash from ATMs using a smartphone application, the Kaching app.

From May, the customers can use the app on their Apple iOS or Android smartphone to withdraw up to $200 (Sh17,382) per day. This is the limit figure. Customers can also request for the withdrawal amount of their wish. They are then required to input two number codes; one from app, an 8-digit cash code and one received in a text message. This is a 4-digit cash PIN to make withdrawals.

A withdrawer has a 30-minute window

to get the money out after receiving the codes.

There is also an option for someone else to collect the cash on their behalf. Through the app, customers can select the person from the phone contacts or enter someone’s mobile number and determine the withdrawal amount and account.

Customers will be given a cash code for sharing with a representative who will receive the cash PIN directly from the bank.

The bank has 2.3 million customers who use the CommBank app on iPhones and Android mobiles. More than 3000 ATMs will be equipped with the card less cash feature.

A ‘lock and limit’ for its credit card customers can control security and spending through

the app.It can block overseas transactions where the card is not present.

Low-income Kenyans spend an average of Sh50 a day on phone calls, a study by South African tech company IT Web Africa and Youth Education Network shows.

The research shows that some mobile phone users, who prefer the pre-pay service option, have gone as far as skipping meals to pay for airtime.

While prepay consumers spend as much as Sh1,500 a month, post-pay services cost about Sh1,000 over the period. “Most of those on pre-pay services either do not know the advantages of post-pay plans, or simply do not have the cash to pay for their monthly subscriptions in one payment,” Baobb Capital Financial Advisor, Dorothy Mwikali.

“I was looking for variety, to introduce customers to a whole new range of high value vegetables and shift their minds from the traditional vegetables they are used to seeing,” he said.

It is a formula that has given him a network of clients because local markets are already flooded with common crops. His list of clients includes the ArtCaffe,

intelligent farMing: Kamande njenga at his farm in ngecha, 40Km from nairobi town. njenga has attained success cultivating unconventional vegetables.

He was about to give up when the restaurant gave him a call, which became a major

turning point in his career.

“I welcomed them to the farm and took them round it,” he recalled.

Today, Kamande supplies his clients with 15 different varieties of lettuce, including butternut and oakleaf, which are preferred by health-

conscious customers due to their reported ability to prevent cancer.

On a regular day, he supplies over 30Kgs of vegetables to ArtCaffe alone.

The growing demand for his produce has seen him recruit 12 workers.

Speaking to XNews, Stella Wairu, who sells fruits by the roadside, said the location she works from exposed her to many dangers.

“It is quite risky to operate from the roadside, where vehicles keep zooming by.

Benson Muruiki a second clothes seller at the market said the lack of organized space market has denied him the chance to expand his business.

The duo’s sentiments were shared by Susan Karanja, an onion seller, who went on to ask the county governor to look into their concerns.

“I am appealing to our governor Evans Kidero to act very fast and ensure that Mwiki has a market. Let him not wait until we get a tragedy so that he can react. He should get to work as early as now,” said Mrs Karanja.

The AACT is a biennial continental ladies golf championship that was last held in Kenya 20 years ago.

Steven Baraza, Said Ruto, Walter Maengo, Boniface Kagai and Stanley Kieti will join 22 other athletes selected last weekend to compete in the world event.

Earlier, AK had not included the 4 x 200m team citing failure to meet the qualifying time—The IAAF rules confirmed there no qualifying time was needed to field a team.

“After perusing through IAAF records, we realize that there is no qualifying time in 4 x 200m and we decided to give our men’s team a consolation and show apprecia-

tion,” said Isaiah Kiplagat, the AK president.

The announcement was met with excitement from the athletes.

“The initial decision by AK, to lock us out was devastating and mean,” said sprinter Maengo.

Meanwhile AK is also awaiting confirmation from IAAF on whether they will enter the 4 x 400m team.
