Musician Boniface Maina, popularly known as JB Maina, sued Safaricom for using his songs for the “Skiza” tunes and “Surf to Win Promotion” without his knowledge.

In documents filed in court, the musician through his lawyers applied for the case to be marked as settled saying the firm had agreed to pay Sh15.5 million.

“I hereby authorise the firm of Gikunda Miriti and Co Advocates, who are my advocates in this matter to apply for the case to be marked as settled having been informed of the offer from the defendant, Safaricom, to pay Sh15.5 million,” he said in the documents.

Safaricom is expected to pay the compensation within 21 days as from yesterday when the consent was adopted, failure to which Mr Maina can move back to court and compel it to do so.

Lands offices to be closed for ten days

The Ministry of Lands offices have been closed as a 10-day audit to sort out public complaints begins.

The offices were shut down on Monday to allow the ministry sort out a number of issues that had been plaguing land owners across the country.

“As the one who deals directly

with real cases from the public, I cannot just sit back and watch,” Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu said in an earlier statement. “Let those who are complaining judge us by the result that comes out after May 19.”

Her statement follows an earlier announcement by the Lands ministry saying about 7,000 land

owners have pending court cases because the ministry had either lost or misplaced their files.

Ngilu has since demanded that officers in the ministry return all missing files, warning that her office will do everything to trace them.

She believes the audit will ensure the pledge is met.

“Those hiding government files at Ardhi House should return them before next week,” she said in a statement late last week. “We will search all desks and cabinets until the files are found.”

Ardhi House is the head office for the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development.

businesstool pasha helps cyber cafes make profits Three out of every five businesses in Kenya fail within the first year, a survey by research group, African Journals claims. With scarce resources, no marketing skills and non-existent researched data, small businesses such as cyber cafes are often destined to fail.

In response to the problem, communication solutions and tech company, Cisco, has developed the Pasha Business Planning Tool. This is a digital guide to help cyber cafes maximise returns.

Renamed the “Pilot Pasha Centres,” or PPCs (“pasha” means “to inform” in Swahili), the pilot programme was launched in January 2009. “Five entrepreneurial cyber cafés were identified across peri-urban and rural communities as initial sites for PPCs,” says Cisco. They were used to test services and user behaviour in developing a sustainable business model.

The research showed that a business with five computers could generate Sh47,040 in income per month if the machines are in use for eight hours a day at a charge of Sh1 a minute. Cyber cafes that do not use PPC make about Sh33,600 a month, 29 per cent less than those which use the tool.

Karen residents to get more options as new mall comes up Kenya’s middle class is expected to grow by 30 per cent in the next eight years, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has said.

The Bureau says 50 per cent of Kenyans who earn between Sh15,000 and Sh50,000 represent the country’s middle class. As individual incomes rise, so do the spending habits and engagement in leisure activities. The Hub, Nairobi’s newest mall, hopes to meet the needs of the class.

NGOs invited to apply for grant The US Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) has asked NGOs that serve refugees in Kenya and Ethiopia to apply for a a share of Sh130,500,000 ($1.5 million) grant.

The deadline for applications is May 27. Applicants should focus on improving the health, protection, education or livelihoods of refugees in either of the Eastern African countries.

The call comes at a time when a move dubbed “Operation Usalama Watch,” or “Operation Peace Watch,” a police operation has netted more than 4,000 people. Most of the suspects are Somali refugees or Kenyan citizens of Somali ethnicity. The Kenya government has said the operation is part of efforts to drive terrorists out of the country following a series of recent attacks.

Applicant NGOs should share proposals with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) before submitting them.

“For Kenya, proposals must be accompanied by a letter from UNHCR Nairobi Office showing endorsement of the proposed activities,” says a statement from the Bureau.

Proposals must be submitted online platform grants.gov. For more information, applicants have been asked to visit state.gov online.

The Churchill Show is among Kenya’s most watched local comedy in Kenya.

The host, Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki, not only takes the lead in amusing audiences but he also takes under his wing aspiring comedians starting out on the road to making people laugh.

It is expected that the upstarts should go solo at some point. However, some of the fledglings fly out of the nest before they are quite ready.

When a little money starts coming in, they think they can stand alone and leave and

launch their own shows.

Eric Omondi is an example. He left Churchill and launched ‘Hawayuni’ on KTN but few were amused by it and he had to come running back to Churchill, who gave him a second chance.

He is now one of Kenya’s most prolific and loved comedians.

Caroline Wanjiku Tharau, also known as Teacher Wanjiku, cut her teeth with Churchill. Her jokes made her popular landing her a promotional deal with Airtel and Blue Band. She was

Soon after, she announced going solo and started her own show—Teacher Wanjiku on Citizen TV. Kenyans took to social media to express their disappointment in the show.

She was trolled on Twitter and Facebook for not performing as expected.

“Teacher Wanjiku: A double lesson in boredom,” one viewer posted on Facebook The show was pulled off air and rumour has it she is negotiating a return to Churchill Live.

Amin, Sekou Toure, Nguema among Africa’s vilest despots Africa has produced its fair share of dictators and Iddi Amin (Uganda), Ahmed Sekou Toure (Guinea), and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea) rank up there among the continent’s most dreaded tyrants of all time.

Amin died in exile in Saudi Arabia 2003.

He had fled to Saudi after being run out of town by invading Tanzanian forces in 1979. It was a welcome end to a brutal eight-year reign of terror, in which close to half a million people are estimated to have been murdered by Amin’s cronies.

as cabinet ministers, judges, diplomats, university lecturers, educators, church leaders were also put to death.

Amin was more famous for his brutality and buffoonery.

He once showed up unannounced in the UK to drop in on the Queen and say hi!

Toure ruled Guinea from1958 until his death in 1984 at 62 years. He literally made himself president for life by declaring his party, Parti démocratique de Guinée (PDG) the only legal party in the country. He imprisoned or exiled his strongest opposition leaders.

In his formative years, Toure was outspoken and was ban-

ished from a French technical institution for heading a food riot in 1936. He was among those who founded Federation of Workers’ Unions of Guinea which he later became vice president.

As a president, he imposed harsh restrictions on opposition forces in guinea to ensure subsequent reelection.

Nguema seized power in Equatorial Guinea on 3rd August 1979 overthrowing his uncle Macias in a bloody coup. Teodoro was to sentence him to death for genocide of the Bubi people.

At the start of his rule, he freed all the political prisoners and eradicated forced

labour but not for long.

Instead of being more lenient than his predecessor, his brutality overshadowed his uncle’s. His oppressive rule marred

Icelanders like their Greenshark fillet rotten Sharks are man eating machines that send chills down one’s spines just at the thought of their menacing jaws.

But in Iceland, eating shark— rotten shark—is normal.

Hakarl is the rotten meat of a Greenland shark that has been cured for more than six months.

It is a popular delicacy served during the mid-winter festival.

The shark is cut up into pieces, washed and buried in with gravel. It is left to decay for six to eight weeks, or for a few months depending on the season. Afterwards, the meat is unearthed, washed and hung in a shed to dry for another two to four months. Once it’s dry, the brown crust is removed leaving white flesh, which is cut into

small chunks to be eaten.

Everybody knows that eating rotten food will land you in hospital with food poisoning. So, why not eat fresh shark meat?

There is a perfectly sane explanation. Fresh Greenland shark meat is poisonous. The sharks do not have urinary tracts thus they secrete urine through their skin and this leads to high

amounts of uric acid in the shark and eating it fresh may cause somebody to vomit blood. By allowing the meat to rot, the acid is drained out. Hakarl is usually taken with a shot of brennivin (a spirit made from potatoes) and has been described by some as being the most disgusting thing they have ever tasted.

Denmark coach accuses Mourinho of “killing soccer”

Denmark head coach Morten Olsen has lashed out at Jose Mourinho, claiming the Chelsea manager’s negative tactics are killing football.

Mourinho has come under fire in recent weeks after adopting defensive approaches, with Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield causing the most controversy.

“In my world, Mourinho is a danger for football. If many try to copy his style, the game will die,” the 64-yearold Olsen said.

“Imagine if everybody played football like Mourinho. Then it would certainly be boring, and I wouldn’t watch the matches.I would prefer to pick a good film or go for a stroll in the forest.”

Olsen, who has been in charge of the Danish national team since 2000, added: “I could play so differently with Chelsea, if I got the chance.

“But Mourinho is only able to play defensively. The club has spent so much money on so good players. Hell, use them then!”

Even Chelsea star Eden Hazard voiced his disapproval of Mourinho’s tactics, claiming the team “was not made to play football” following the club’s loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

Denmark head Coach Morten Olsen says Mourinho’s tactics are not doing the sport any good.

Andrew Flintoff unlikely to call off retirement

Former England all-rounder cricket player Andrew Flintoff has admitted he is unlikely to call a u-turn and return to the field.

His former club, Lancashire, have attempted to dampen speculation about a potentially stunning comeback. But they have not ruled out the possibility of a return nearly five years after his retirement from Test cricket.

Flintoff, 36, has been linked with playing again in this summer’s NatWest Blast t20 competition. And although Lancashire remain non-committal about his ability to play competitively after retiring with knee trouble, they have stopped short of dismissing the suggestion.

“There is an awful long way to go before that happens,” said Paul Allott, Lancashire’s former captain and board member.

“He has been practising and volunteering around the group and been more than useful in that role and we are more than happy to have him around. Whether it comes to more than that, who knows?”

If Lancashire had hoped to keep Flintoff ’s potentially fairy-tale comeback under wraps, their former charge had not read the script.

“Referring was suspect in that match. I don’t see how a 50-50 challenge can result in a red card. We deserve better from the officials unless football has evolved into a non-contact sport,” he said. KRA will next play Tusker, a side that has been winless in the last three games.

“It will be like any other match, we simply have to be ready for it,” Kenyatta said.

Mariga called up to Stars for Comoros tie

McDonald Mariga of Italy Serie A side Inter Milan has been recalled to the national squad ahead of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Comoros on May 18.

Mariga has been absent from the Harambee Stars for over three years. He had been recalled for the aborted match against Sudan in Khartoum in March.

Belgium-based Origi is returning from injury and has not donned the national

colours for over a year.

Assistant coach James Nandwa has confirmed that they contacted a number of foreign based players, who are expected in the country next week ahead of the crucial tie.

Liverpool stars shed tears after title hopes go up in smoke Liverpool’s naivety, allied to woeful mistakes and decision-making when victory seemed assured, almost certainly ended their hopes of a first title for 24 years.

The Liverpool players slumped to the ground in despair at the end of their 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace. Others like Luis Suarez and others were in tears as they left the field.

Rudisha out of Doha season opener The eagerly awaited return of Olympics champion and world record holder, David Rudisha to the track will have to wait longer after he suffered a calf-strain.

Rudisha was expected to feature in Friday’s season opener in Doha Qatar but had to pull out.

The 25-year old said it was unfortunate he will have to wait longer to make a comeback to the track.

“I’m very disappointed not to be able to race in Doha. I know I have got a lot of fans there and I’m sorry I cannot compete for them,” Rudisha said.

“I have been training well, progressively getting fitter and stronger these last months and was excited about returning to competition in Doha.”

He is however hoping to gain fitness ahead of May 31 IAAF Diamond League meet in Oregon, USA.
