Sonko says such vehicles have contributed to the rising crime wave because nobody sees what goes on in the vehicles.

“The vehicles that are tinted have always been used in so many crimes and especially in Nairobi. Police should do a thorough crackdown to ensure Kenyans are safe,” said Sonko.

The senator asked Kenyans to cooperate with police in improving security.

“We all have a role to play in improving our security. Let us help police to fight crime and we will all be safe,” said Sonko.

The warning comes a few days after police in Thika arrested six illegal aliens travelling in a vehicle using ‘ambulance’ brand to Nairobi. Three of the suspects were from Eritrea and two from Somalia.

The suspects were arrested as they left the Thika–Garissa road into the Thika Super highway. None had travel or identification papers.

The new body which has replaced the Joint Admissions Board (Jab) last week announced the lowering of university entry cut-off points to B(minus) for females and B for males at 58 and 60 points respectively.

KR to increase coaches on city commuter trains The Kenya Railways will increase coaches on trains plying the Makadara and Imara-Daima routes to accommodate more commuters, the KR spokesperson Margaret Kawira has said.

Kawira said the move, to be implemented in two months, is intended the meet the growing demand of rail transport in Nairobi.

Commuters often hang on trains due to overcrowing inside the coaches especially during rush hours.

Kawira said providing more coaches is meant tot stop this dangerous rides by commuters.

“We are treating the matter as an emergency because people are risking their lives by hanging on the trains,” she said. She also said that they want to encourage the use of train as a means of transport because they are cheaper and faster. TASTE TEST The National Authority Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) will be testing samples of alcohol from various manufacturers to ensure the drinks are fit for human consumption.

The Authority has told the manufacturers that production is currently illegal until they can confirm that the products being made are safe and genuine.

The move follows the death of over 70 people who died last week after taking a lethal brew.

Only three out of over 20 companies that had presented their samples to NACADA have so far met the set requirements and received certificates of compliance.

They included Moon Walk Investment Limited, Zeng Hong Kenya Limited and Vine Park Limited.

One of the requirements that NACADA is looking for includes a certificate from the Kenya Bureau of Standards, which will prove whether the product is harmless.

“Even though some of the companies have received a certificate showing that they have met the requirements, we still do not know the contents of the alcoholic drinks at the moment,” said NACADA Chairman John Mututho, following the announcement late last week.

“Anyone running an alcoholic business at the moment is doing it illegally.”

100 migrants die as boats sink in Mediterranean More than 100 migrants are believed to have drowned in recent weeks when three boats smuggling them to Europe sank in the Mediterranean.

Libyan officials said on Sunday that at least 36 migrants died and 42 are missing after the boat in which they were

traveling capsized on May 6 off the Libyan coast, 30 miles east of Tripoli.

An official said the hull of the boat gave way shortly after it left the beach because of the crush of people on board.

Passengers were said to have come from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gambia, Mali and

Senegal.

A United Nations official said on Sunday that the Libyan coast guard reported another wreck off the Libyan coast on April 30 in which a Somali survivor reported that 40 passengers had drowned.

On May 2, the Libyan coast guard said it had saved 80

people from a sinking vessel, including Eritreans, Somalis and Ethiopians. Four corpses were found, the report said.

Italy launched a naval operation last October to rescue migrants in Italian and international waters after the deaths of 364 migrants whose vessel caught fire off the Ital-

ian island of Lampedusa.

On Friday, the Italian navy said in the previous week, it had picked up 4,362 migrants at sea, bringing the total number transferred to Italy since October to more than 30,000. Many have been sent to Sicily, where reception centers are overflowing.

CID experts in counties to deal with terror threat

The equipment will be strengthened to ensure efficiency.

The Bomb Disposal Unit is a section of the eight units under the Forensic Department in a new structure for the department.

The average Kenyan is more worried about the rising cost of living and insecurity than anything else, a new survey

by Ipsos Synovate claims.

Thirty-eight per cent of those interviewed said they are more concerned about the cost of living. Fifty nine per cent of the respondents say their economic conditions have worsened since last

year. The poll was conducted between April 28 and May 7 through one-on-one interviews with 2,059 respondents across the country. Synovate says 37 per cent of the respondents cited security as their biggest concern as threats of terror attacks continue to plague the country.

Head teachers with no diploma certificates in education management will be barred from running schools, Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has said. Addressing principals and deputies at the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI), Prof Kaimenyi said head teachers require extra management skills for proper administration.

“This is not an added advantage, but a compliment if you want to be a manager,” said Kaimenyi.

The minister said specific training is mandatory for efficient service delivery and better results.

An 18-year-old girl was Sunday evening killed in an explosion at their Kiamumbi area house, in Nairobi, that was triggered by a gas cylinder.

Civil servants union to sue Lenku over sackings The Union of Kenya Civil Servants will challenge in court the sacking of public officers over illicit alcohol consumption that killed 94 people.

The union, through its secretary general Tom Odege, gave Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku an ultimatum to reinstate the sacked officers by today or face legal action. The minister had interdicted 52 civil servants among them two chief executives, a deputy county commissioner and OCPDs following the deaths.

But the union, while reacting to the move last Friday, termed the sacking as reactionary and vowed to challenge it in court if the decision was not rescinded.

“It is similar to taking a hammer to kill a fly which is unacceptable. We are giving the minister up to Monday (today) to reinstate the innocent public servants and we seek legal redress,” said Mr Odege who was flanked by other union officials during the press conference at Ufundi Cooperative House said.

The ministry of health has since iden-

tified the illicit brands as Sacramento Cane Spirit and Countryman, both of which contain 100 percent methanol, as the cause of the deaths in Embu, Makueni, Kitui, Kiambu, Murang’a and Nairobi counties. According to Mr Odege, the killer brews had the mark of quality from the Kenya Bureau of Standards and were consumed in bars.

“If it were chang’aa then the civil servants could have been blamed for laxity but that was not the case,” he said.

Buying ‘tea’ for service almost a norm in Kenya Buying ‘tea’ and privately paying public and private officials to influence decision-making is the most common form of corruption in Kenya.

A survey by social justice group, Transparency International, says acts of corruption in the country have been on a rise.

“Public servants, that is, employees of central government ministries, local authorities and state corporations are by far the most bribed,” says Transparency International. They account for 99 per cent of all bribe-related cases.

The UK gets 16 new billionaires The number of billionaires living in the UK has jumped to 104 in 2014 from 88 in 2013, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. This is the first time the number has risen to more than 100, says the publication.

Their combined wealth has also reportedly shot up to £301 billion (Sh44 trillion) from £245 billion (Sh36 trillion) last year.

It is the first time since 2008

that the minimum wealth of the 50 richest people in the UK has exceeded £1.5 billion (Sh220 billion).

The Rich list appears to be growing at a steady pace.

Last year, 88 billionaires were living in the UK. In 2004, the number of billionaires in Britain was 30.

According to the Rich List, a fortune of £1.7 billion (Sh250 billion) is now required to make the top 50, up from

about Sh103 billion 10 years ago. That means the UK has more billionaires per head of population than any other country.

London has 72 billionaires, more than any other city in the world and far ahead of nearest rival Moscow which boasts of 48 billionaires.

At the top of the UK list are Indian-born brothers, Sri Hinduja and Gopie Hinduja, who run the Hinduja Group.

They have a combined fortune of £11.9 billion (Sh1.7 trillion).

Alisher Usmanov, an Arsenal shareholder and Russian businessman, is a close second with a wealth of about Sh1.6 trillion.

Meanwhile, Africa has a total of 27 billionaires. Bidco CEO, Vimal Shah and his kin are currently the richest family in Kenya with a combined wealth of Sh136 billion.

“Most bribes involve relatively small sums paid frequently,” says the survey. Bribes of up to Sh200 paid every day account for about 44 per cent of all bribe-related transactions. The average urban Kenyan pays 16 bribes to public and private institutions in a month, the survey shows.

Daily bribes of between Sh200 and Sh500 account for 24 per cent of all transactions. Paying between Sh500 and Sh1,000 represents 15 per cent of the transactions. Sixteen per cent of all bribes cost Kenyans between Sh1,000 and Sh100,000 and only 1 per cent cost over Sh100,000.

Based on the survey, the average monthly salary for urban Kenyans is Sh26,086 as the average monthly cost of a bribe is Sh8,188. This represents 31.4 percent of an individual’s salary.

uct has since been driving new sales for farmers across the country with groups and companies reporting a rapidly growing demand Propolis is an active ingredient in the manufacture of skin moisturisers, food technologies, and medicines.

It is gathered by beekeepers, either by scraping the inside of the hive or by stimulating bees to apply the substance to

a plastic sheet with holes in it.

Locally, companies like Tego Foods, Dotino Pharmaceuticals and Lightshade Cosmetics are now sourcing propolis from local farmers in a newly lucrative business.

“Look for any company selling honey and tell them you have propolis. They come almoset immediately. That’s how strong the demand for the product is,” Kiige said.

Power supply now packed in rucksacks

The GoPlug bag, dubbed the world’s first ‘smart bag’ is a bag that can charge digital cameras, laptops, phones, torches and many more while on the go. It contains its own battery pack that allows one the convenience to charge a device especially when not near a power outlet.

The GoPlug has a 115v, 60Hz system, which is capable of churning out 80 watts of continuous uninterrupted power. The bag is water resistant and

Holographic TV soon a reality, says MIT wizard Holographic TV is closer to reality, thanks to a 10 dollar (Sh850) optical chip built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The chip has successfully projected multiple holograms, including a one of a graduate student dressed as Princess Leia in “Star Wars,” Michael Bove, head

of the Object-Based Media Group at MIT, said.

The development of the chip has been more than 20 years.

“This is a very long-term project, but it’s accelerated a lot in this past couple of years,” Bove said. “This is not just something that we woke up a few weeks ago

and said, ‘Let’s make holograms.’”

And the gains, according to Bove, scatter across the board.

“If you have to have a meeting with a person, you could have the person in front of you with no screen involved,” Bove said.

Friends with benefits, the new game-changer Traditionally, almost 100 of friendships with the opposite sex were a recipe for marriage, but modernity is redefining this culture with Friends With Benefits (FWB) who only engage for sexual gratification.

FWB are neither emotionally bonded nor have strings attached.

Their business is sex. Not romance for marriage.

An online source, Urban Dictionary, defines FWB as: “Two friends who have a sexual relationship without being emotionally involved.”

Just years back, it was wild and weird to even dream of such a relationship. Today, a click of ‘Friend With Benefits’ floods one’s screen with social sites and links that direct you to potential partners many, who have posted nudity and their contacts.

If we were to go by the age posted, they range from 20 to 40 years, but this does not mean older members of society cannot be FWBs. Benard, who did not want his second name published, says the youth are not ready for a commitment therefore, it is an avenue for them to satisfy their sexual urge.

“It is an escape route for those of us who do not want serious engagements at an early age, but are in dire need of sex. At 23, I don’t have enough to think of marriage, which may be eight to 10 years away.” he says.

with his team studied 300 former FWBs. They found that 80 per cent remained friends, 50 percent reported feelings as closer to their x-FWB than before the relationship started while 30 per cent were not close at all.

A prior study showed that FWB may precipitate into loss of good friends, citing 28 percent of the students studied, while developing unreciprocated feelings was observed in 65 per cent of the respondents.

Gor Mahia remain on top after weekend triumph

Italy boss facing tough times ahead of World Cup

SUPERSTAR: Forward Mario Balotelli’s unpredictability has forced Italy’s head Coach Cesare Pradelli to rework his formation.

Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli is a concerned man ahead of the 2014 World Cup, which starts in a month’s time.

Prandelli took Italy to the Euro 2012 final with an attack-minded plan.

This time, the coach might have fewer choices when selecting his team because some of his key players may not be available for the long-haul.

Andrea Pirlo, the Juventus midfielder, with 108 appearances to his name so far, dominated England at Euro 2012, but will bow out of international football after the World Cup. Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has been anointed his successor.

Giuseppe Rossi, out for four months with a serious knee injury sustained in January, made a goalscoring return to form last

week for Fiorentina, but it is not clear whether he will be in great shape for the World Cup. Italy were unbeaten in the qualifiers when Prandelli was planning to build his side around Mario Balotelli, but the striker’s unpredictability has forced a change of plan. Prandelli is still unsure whether to play one or two up front and, with Rossi not certain to start, he may opt for a front three in which Alessio Cerci and Antonio Candreva can track back to boost the numbers in midfield.

Current starting XI (4-3-3): Buffon; Romulo, Barzagli, Chiellini, De Sciglio; Rossi, Pirlo, Montolivo; Cerci, Balotelli, Candreva.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Gerard Pique (11m) and Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos (10m) are the pair of centre-backs chosen.

While a defensive instability could hamper this lot, with substitutes such as Sergio Aguero (4m), Luis Suarez (5m) and Wayne Rooney (19m) waiting in reserve, fans would certainly fancy their chances in Brazil!

Courtois wanted back at the Bridge Jose Mourinho wants Thibaut Courtois to play for Chelsea next season— and end his exile from the club.

The Belgian has been impressive in his loan stint with Atletico Madrid.

Mourinho is keen to have the Belgian in his side for the start of the campaign, with Petr Cech’s injury tipping the balance.

Cech’s shoulder problem will cause him to be sidelined for three months and casts a shadow over his fitness for the next big kick-off.

“That would mean a mighty tussle between Courtois and Cech to play. But that crunch was always going to happen at some stage,” said Mourihno.

Mourinho wants to start with a bang next season and bringing in fit and flying Courtois would be part of that plan.

The Blues are also concerned that Courtois could get used to being away from them and they need to have him back on board.

It would put a question mark over popular Cech, but Mourinho has never been afraid to make the major calls.

Fury, Chisora enter trash-talk phase After a mostly respectful fight build, Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora have now entered the heavy trash-talk realm of their media promotion.

The heavyweight rivals had to be forcibly pulled apart by security during their public head to head at the Printworks in Manchester—after the head became too much.

During the event, Chisora brought out Fury’s recent Twitter comments, which accused him of using anabolic steroids.

What followed was a heated exchange, with the men having to be separated by security officials on the grounds.

The bad blood then spilled over into a separate spat between Chisora and a member of Fury’s family, who was being vocal about his feelings, whilst standing amongst the 600+ attending crowd.

Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole has announced retiring from international football after being left out of England’s World Cup squad by manager Roy Hodgson’s squad for the World Cup. “I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players,” the 33-year-old Cole told his Twitter followers.

“We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything,” the 107-times capped Cole added ahead of Hodgson’s official squad announcement today.

Hodgson told the Football Association website that

dropping Cole, who “in his prime” was the world’s best left-back, had been one of the toughest decisions of his career.

“Among many difficult decisions I’ve had to make for my squad, not selecting Ashley was one of the hardest,” Hodgson said “He’s been an incredible competitor for England, to amass over a century of caps is a truly staggering achievement and he deserves enormous credit for the desire and brilliance which England will face Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in the group stages of the World Cup which gets under way on June 12.
