The disease risks in roadside chips With up to 93 Kenyans dead from drinking illegal brew, a Kenyatta National Hospital doctor has warned that an industrial oil being used to make chips across Nairobi is generating

waves of sick patients. The oil, which is dangerous for human consumption, “is a highly refined mineral oil which has excellent electrical insulating properties making it

very hard for human beings to digest,” says Dr Augustine Nganga of KNH. “It leads to diarrhoea, abdominal pains, stomach cramps and even vomiting for long periods.”

An X News survey has found that most Nairobi traders cooking by roadsides use the oil, which is being stolen from electrical transformers, to fry food for customers.

In Embakasi’s Kijiji village, street vendors revealed that they use “transformer oil” to fry chips that they sell for as little as Sh10.
