The oil, which is dangerous for human consumption, “is a highly refined mineral oil which has excellent electrical insulating properties making it

very hard for human beings to digest,” says Dr Augustine Nganga of KNH. “It leads to diarrhoea, abdominal pains, stomach cramps and even vomiting for long periods.”

An X News survey has found that most Nairobi traders cooking by roadsides use the oil, which is being stolen from electrical transformers, to fry food for customers.

In Embakasi’s Kijiji village, street vendors revealed that they use “transformer oil” to fry chips that they sell for as little as Sh10.

Disease risks in roadside chips From Page 1 “For me, it is the best oil I have ever used. It makes the chips look more yellowish and appetizing enough to attract customers compared to ordinary oil,” says Mama Vanga, a bulky woman who refused to give her real identity for fear of victimisation and losing customers.

The transformer oil, which is

known in electrical parlance as insulating oil, is meant to cushion the transformer’s internal live parts to prevent heat loss and suppress the corona (a crown-like structure inside the transformer).

To ward off the smell, Mama Vanga mixes it with cooking oil so that customers do not notice.

But the trend has put many lives at risk.

Youths who steal the oil and later sell to women also risk being electrocuted in the process.

“Normally, they switch off the transformer at the electric insulator on the electricity pole before they embark on draining the oil,” says Daniel Kilenge, who is a former engineer with Kenya Power.

He says those who cannot switch it off normally cause a ground fault.

This is the reason most transformers in informal settlements explode.

“Once that oil is drained, the transformer gets overheated and eventually explodes. It is a very dangerous scenario,” he warns.

The oil is cheap and Mama Vanga and her ilk prefer it. Besides, it can be used and re-used several times without adverse effect on food like ordinary oil according to her.

The oil hardly gets dirty because it is stable, meaning it does not boil and evaporate easily even at high temperatures,” says Kilenge.

The health risk in human use is also spreading to barbers and hairstylists, who are opting for the oil instead of ordinary spirit applied as aftershave.

Experts urge State to expand KMTCs

Experts have called for the expansion of Kenya Medical Training Colleges to admit more students as a way of addressing the shortage of staff in public hospitals.

They have asked the government to allocate more resources to the institutions to enable them train more healthcare practitioners.

Addressing a conference at KMTC in Nairobi, Pacificia Onyancha said the disconnect between supply and demand is responsible for the shortage of nurses and doctors.

“That is why expansion is necessary to allow more students join colleges,” Pacifia said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Dr John Odondi who said quality training is key to making healthcare services available and affordable to the public.

The colleges face shortage of staff and facilities to train the required number of health workers.

Out of the 25,000 qualified students who are apply for admission annually, only 7,000 join thecolleges due to limited space.

There are only 38 KMTC colleges in the country. It also emerged from the conference that the health sector requires 817,992 doctors, nurses and midwives.

The government recently announced plans to employ 12,000 nurses to try curb a shortage of nurses. Health workers are constantly migrating to other countries due to better working conditions and pay.

Prof Philip Kaloki, the KMTC Board chairman, said county governments, medical training colleges, universities and hospitals should promote healthcare training.

Researchers in Prague fed two groups of 27 people the same calorie diet spread over two or six meals a day.

They found volunteers who ate two meals a day lost more weight than those who ate six. Their blood sugar levels also dropped.

City Hall fires 300 in ghost workers purge More than 300 City Hall workers have been sacked as the county government begins to weed out ghost workers.

The workers were served with suspension letters dated April 29 and asked to report only once a week to line managers as a probe on how they joined City Hall’s payroll continues.

A report by PricewaterhouseCoopers has revealed that the county government has an excess workforce of more than 6,000 staff.

The required maximum workers at City Hall is about 5,000 but the government has 11,000 on the payroll and Governor Evans Kidero has vowed to cut the number.

The clean-up exercise is expected to reduce the wage bill. Ghost workers are said to account for 44.7per cent of the salaries.

The sacking of fake staff will free up resources to help develop health and infrastructure, City Hall officials say.

Some of employees have been suspended because their ID numbers were being used to make payments to National Health Insurance Fund, the officials claim.

The construction of Nairobi’s Outer Ring Road is will create more than 1,000 jobs once it kicks off in July. The ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has said it is targeting the youth for skilled and unskilled labour.

The construction, which was earlier scheduled for April, will begin in July.

The road is expected to have a dedicated lane for pedestrians.

“The road will feature dedicated bus lanes, a seven-metre wide service road on each side, footpaths and a cycle lane with drains on both sides,” a statement from the ministry states.

The project however will alleviate traffic congestion within Nairobi as the road will be converted

into a dual rather than the single carriageway currently in place.

“The Ministry is set to begin expansion works on Nairobi’s Outer Ring Road, a road which is an important arterial road within the capital, but has become notorious for its wanting state and cumbersome traffic snarl-ups,” the statement said.

Once complete, it will take one only 10 minutes to traverse the road instead of the current 2-3 hours.

The construction which is funded through a Sh9.8 billion loan from the Africa Development Bank is expected to take three years and is set to benefit more than 2.2milion users.

NYS to hire 21,000 per year More than 21, 000 youths will be recruited every year to join the National Youth Service in a new restructuring drive announced yesterday. Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru said the youths will serve the nation for four to six months as paid labour basis.

21,870 youths every year and through the National Service, the 21870 servicemen and women will ‘disciple’ and mentor 227, 670 other youths per year. She added that after the training, the youth will be transferred to other developmental activities in the country. “After the paramilitary training we will be involved in

programs such as integrated dam constructions. The new recruits will build 1,100 dams and pans every year,” Waiguru said. Waiguru was sharing the Jubilee government’s youth agenda to be delivered through the new National Youth Service. She added that the youth will also undertake mechanised and manual road

construction at county level. “There has been a debate over the arming of guards in the private security firms as a security measure but with this new restructuring, the trainees can instead be used as security detail and the Members of Parliament can consider arming them, after all they are trained under paramilitary standards.”

“The recruits will also be deployed to Huduma Soup Kitchens across the counties which will be providing basic food to Kenyans who cannot afford to buy food. This will boost their interaction with the society.”

The start date for each cohort will be in July and January with the graduation in November and May .

JKIA signs Sh435m catering jobs deal The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has signed a deal with global airline caterer, LSG Sky Chefs, for the supply of in-flight catering for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

LSG Sky Chefs is part of LSG Lufthansa, the caterers’ parent company with headquarters in Neu-Isenburg, Germany.

Speaking during the signing of the agreement with LSG Sky Chefs, KAA Managing Director Lucy Mbugua said the move will significantly boost the authority and the economy.

“It will enable KAA generate additional income from concession fees which will boost the proportion of the authority’s income,” she says.

“The national economy will also benefit from the investment of over $5 million (Sh435 million) and generating many job opportunities,” Mbugua says.

LSG will become the second in-flight caterer for airlines operating from the facility after catering company, NAS, which has solely operated at JKIA in the past.

Eurozone growth stagnates at 0.2pc The Eurozone economic growth stagnated at 0.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2014, results that were weaker than what economists had projected.

The United Business Association (UBA), a social justice group that fights for the rights of business people, has asked the government to provide a conducive environment to the business community.

Following a series of terror attacks in parts of the country, a number of local businesses have made serious losses.

3,000 people from Kenya’s tourism sector alone have already lost their jobs as foreign visitor numbers continue to fall.

Tourist arrivals declined to 1.09 million in 2013, down from 1.23 million the year before.

Forty-one per cent of crimes reported in Nairobi involve violent robberies and residents in all parts of the city are prone to the attacks.

A study by the Security Research and Information Centre (SRIC) shows “city residents are worried by rampant use of small arms such as pistols, home-made guns and toy guns in most of the crimes committed.”

Former Nairobi Central District Business Association Chairman Timothy Muriuki says traders lose about Sh5 million daily to this type of crime. “As a result, investors are spending more than 40 per cent profits installing security gadgets,” he says.

About 54 per cent of all Nairobi residents feel unsafe during the day while 94 per cent feel insecure at night. As a result 72 per cent of avoid travelling and working after dusk.

A survey by Ernst and Young survey has revealed that 46 per cent of employers will hire less workers in the coming 12 months while 37 per cent will retain the same number of openings as last year with just 4 per cent will hiring more people.

Kenya’s job market is a competitive field with over 800,000 new jobseekers vying for an estimated

50,000 jobs created every year.

According to the report, there will be high priority openings in government for jobs in technology and innovation.

Those with ICT skills will have an added advantage.

The survey notes that there is also a higher demand for managers in Eastern Africa while demand for executives is expected to drop.

Other farmers sell their milk for Sh30 per litre. With a herd of 36 dairy cows, up from 20 in 2019, the Uasin Gishu farmer’s supply of high quality can only increase.

Many businesses assume they are making profits just because they exchange goods and services for cash.

However, Vice-President of American multinational company, Intel Corporation, John Davies, says cashflow alone is not an indication of success. He says this is why experts use a system known as Return on Investment (ROI).

ROI is the concept of calculating how much money a business owner has made from a particular venture. It is a unit measured in percentages. A high ROI is good for a business and means the money spent on an investment has been returned and that the investor has made a profit.

David Riebstien, writer of Marketing Metrics, describes ROI as a tool used to measure the success of a business.

He states that ROI can be calculated by subtracting the expenses used to invest in a product from the total amount of money that item has made.

The result is divided by the same expenses and the answer is multiplied by 100. For instance, a trader buys coconuts at Sh10,000 and sells them at Sh15,000 he gets a gross profit of Sh5, 000. Dividing that by the initial investment capital of Sh10,000 and multiplying it by 100 gives him an ROI of 50 per cent.

Is South Africa Oliech’s next stop?

Former Kenya captain Dennis Oliech is poised to leave France’s Ligue 1 side Ajaccio, who have been relegated.

Oliech is believed to be eyeing a move to South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL). He, however, acknowledged receiving several offers.

The player, who is in the Harambee Stars camp is preparing for Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations

qualifiers against Comoros in Nairobi, said he will take time before making a move.

“I have played in France for several years and I don’t think it will be a bad idea to try a different challenge somewhere else,” said the former FC Nantes forward.

“A number of clubs in South Africa have shown interest in me and I will see the best way forward.

However, I must admit that South Africa’s football standards are high. So, let’s wait and see how things will pan out,” he said.

The player targets to help the national team qualify for the next World Cup and he insists Kenya has the quality needed to propel it in the tournament.

Oliech made his debut for Kenya in 2002 when Harambee Stars lost 3-0 to Nigeria.

But his highest moment remains the wonder goal he scored against Cape Verde, which ensured Kenya qualified for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.

Time for you to step up, Mr Lionel Messi Former Argentina player Ossie Ardiles says Lionel Messi would swap his club success for a World Cup winners’ medal.

“He would give all the medals he has won at Barcelona to win one World Cup,” said 1978 World Cup-winner Ardiles. “To be considered alongside the top, top guys like Pele and Diego Maradona , he not only needs to be in the World Cup but to win it.”

Messi, 26, has won 21 club prizes with Barcelona but has not passed the quarter-finals in two World Cups.

The only international trophies in his cabinet so far are the 2005 World Youth Cup and gold the 2008 Olympics football winners medals.

He was mostly used as a substitute in the 2006 World Cup and was part of the side beaten 4-0 by Germany at the

semi-final stage of the 2010 tournament.

No European team has ever won a World Cup held in South America, but Ardiles, a former Swindon, Newcastle and Tottenham manager, feels the global nature of club football means international players no longer struggle to adapt to tournaments on different continents.

“Three or four teams from Europe have a big chance in Brazil,” said the 61-year-old.

“Though Brazil are playing at home, being at home is not a big advantage anymore.

“Players play all over, things have changed. It is a lot less of an advantage than it used to be.”

They haven’t scored since 1986 but beware the Desert Foxes Algeria will go into the 2014 World Cup, its fourth appearance, hoping to for its first ever qualification for the second round.

However, getting out of Group H,which also comprises star-studded Belgium, Russia, and South Korea, seems a long shot for the Desert Foxes.

Stars coach’s battle cry for Comoros tie Harambee Stars head coach Adel Amrouche has rallied his troops for an all-out attack against Comoros on Sunday. The teams are set for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier clash at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Though the island nation ranks low at 184 in FIFA rankings, Amrouche has urged the team to give Kenya advantage to take to Comoros at the end of the month.

“Gone are the days of underrating opponents. In this era, there is no room for that and that is the massage I have passed to the team,” said Amrouche who watched Comoros train at Ruaraka grounds on Thursday afternoon.

Comoros arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday morning direct from Paris with four more locally based players set to jet in later on Thursday from Comoros.

“There is no looking back. Our target is to take the two games to qualify for the group stages. In doing so, we will take our opponents seriously,” he said.

He said Kenya must qualify for the next stage of the competition.

The team shifted training from Kasarani to Nyayo stadium on Wednesday. Foreign based players Dennis Oliech and David Ochieng, Johanna Omollo and Ayub Timbe had reported to camp by Thursday evening.

Defender dreams of CAN debut Al Taawon defender David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng’ has no doubt the current crop of players can easily qualify for Africa Cup of Nations after missing in action for a decade.

The defender, who spoke ahead of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Nyayo Stadium against Comoros, said it will be a major disaster if the country fails to qualify for the tournament.

“Our absence and shortcomings in recent past should act as motivating factor, many of the players have never been to a Cup of Nations, though a bit far, that is the sole priority,” said the former Tusker FC man.

“We have the necessary momentum to ride over Comoros and we need the fans to motivate us to success now and in future matches,” he said.

Cheche, who has in the past played in defensive midfield position for the national team, said winning the regional tournament last year gave the team vital motivation.

“I admire the current generation of players and their desire to win. That will be our main asset throughout the qualifiers,” he said.

The return match will be on May 31 in Comoros Island. Kenya will play either Lesotho or Liberia if they go past Comoros in the two-legged fixture.

Defending Kenya Cup champions Nakuru will clash with KCB at the RFUEA grounds in Nairobi tomorrow afternoon for the coveted Kenya Cup title.

Nakuru, which was founded in 1933, were relegated from top league in the 2005 season before returning to top flight in 2007.

They have tasted Enterprise Cup success in 1948, 1962, 1963, and 2008 and most notably in 2014 when they whipped KCB 18-15 in the last minute of a pulsating final played at RFUEA Grounds on April 5.

Mariga happy to be back Inter-Milan player Macdonald Mariga has expressed his joy after uniting with the national team after two years.
