Nairobi residents scampered for safety in tears, fear and pain after University of Nairobi students joined colleagues in other public universities in street demonstrations to protest proposals to increase tuition fees.

Many students were injured in confrontations with riot police officers and scores of others arrested.

At least three university of Nairobi students were seriously injured and taken to Kenyatta National Hospital as four others were treated at the campus clinic.

Student leaders condemned security officers for manhandling them.

“The protests were peaceful until police started lobbing teargas and beating us,” claimed Sonu Secretary General Jimmy Akatch who was arrested and later released.

Akatch made the claim even as scores of innocent members of the public reported cases where students either

roughed them up, destroyed property or disrupted business activities.

Kenyans across the divide condemned the students for acts of hooliganism that forced security agents to intervene.

In Machakos, pedestrians were caught in the melee as police clashed with protesting Machakos University College students.

In Nairobi, traders and office workers were forced out of their offices along University Way and parts of Uhuru Highway after murderous students made the area a no-go zone.

The students looted from motorists who were caught up in the protests.

At least 100 students were arrested and 52 of them were due to be arraigned in court today.

Police said the 52 will be charged with destroying and looting property and participating in illegal meetings.

Some of those arrested were not learners but criminals who took advantage of the protests to loot from civilians.

The students through their leaders had on Monday warned motorists to keep off major roads through which they planned to hold demonstrations.

In Kisumu and Kakamega towns, students from Maseno and Masinde Muliro universities joined in the protests.

Egerton university students engaged police in running battles in Nakuru town demanding the release of their leaders who were detained by police.

At Kenyatta, Dedan Kimathi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology kept away from the protests with their leaders maintaining that they trusted dialogue for a way forward.

The protests were organised to protests plans by the Commission for Higher Education to review tuition fees charged in public universities.

They have also opposed to plans to slash Helb loans as recently proposed by the state lender. Those arrested in Nairobi were detained at Central Police Station.

Top schools’ lion share in varsity intake Leading Nairobi schools scooped a lion share of available slots in public universities even though they were missing in the top ranks of last year’s KCSE results.

Although Pangani Girls and Nairobi School were missing from the top 10 list in the results list, data from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service shows nearly all students from the schools will proceed to university.

Of the 283 candidates presented by Pangani in the exam, 256 will be admitted to university.

The school had 269 students with mean grade C+ and above.

Another 255 from Nairobi will proceed to university.

The school had an enrollment of 285, out of whom 280 scored C+ and above.

A total of 231 candidates from Lenana secured admission while Moi Girls will have 209 in public universities.

Starehe whose performance has fallen in the past few years had 200 students selected, just one below Kenya High who had 201.

Only one from Precious Blood will not join university out of the 135 who sat the exam, while 161 others from State House were selected.

The new university placement body selected students with a mean grade of A plain to a B- (minus) of 58 points for girls while cut-off points for boys is 60.

Herder finds human bones in Lenana

X-rated radio talk riles MCk The Media Council has warned radio talk show hosts against engaging in sexually explicit discussions on air.

The Media Council CEO, Harun Mwangi, specifically cited the morning shows for their notoriety in soliciting inappropriate comments from callers.

He said most of the callers are not genuine and that they are paid to increase ratings for the show so as to attract advertising. He called for regulation of radion content.

“Broadcasting code of ethics should be established to regulate content that is aired by radio stations to avoid irresponsible talk,” Mwangi said.

Mwangi was addressing the press during the launch of a report on radio shows in Kenya. The report titled: Assessing the Application of Ethical Standards and Professional-

Yesterday’s deportation brings to 382 the number of illegal immigrants who have been sent back to Somalia.

Some 2308 were screened at Kasarani where 838 were released after they were found with valid identification documents while another 730 were taken back to refugee camps.

Police boss David Kimaiyo said the operation on illegal immigrants is ongoing.

Nigeria twin blasts kill 118, Kenyans be warned At least 118 people were killed Tuesday in twin blasts at a market in the central Nigerian city of Jos, an official said, warning the toll could climb.

In what appears to be a harrowing warning for Kenyans who normally mill at scenes of explosions after similar attacks, the twin explosions in Nigeria which targeted Terminus market, went off some 20 to 30 minutes apart, setting fire to the entire venue.

“The death toll stands at 118.

This is the number of victims recovered from the scene of the explosions, but we are still searching through the smoldering debris for more bodies,” said Mohammed Abdulsalam, coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency in the city. “The figure may rise when the search is over,” Abdulsalam said.

Kayole police blame crime on overcrowding Police in Kayole have said high population density is frustrating their fight against crime in the estate and other neighbouring residential areas.

Kayole deputy OCPD Ali Ndiema says identifying and arresting criminals in the crowded residential area poses a danger to innocent residents and police officers.

“Dealing with Mungiki and other gangs in Kayole was close to impossible because we could not distinguish

them from the members of the public due to the high population and how Kayole was planned,” said Ndiema.

Ndiema said it is hard to apprehend criminals once they enter the estate. “With the huge population, you can’t engage in firing since that will endanger many peoples’ lives and the rules of engagement do not allow for such careless shooting in the police department.” “It’s not only Kayole and Komarock and Kayole that

faces this impediment, but also other estates like Umoja that is crowded and Donholm which has low density population,” added Ndiema.

The fate of thousands of workers in the tourism sector hangs in the balance as the government launches a drive to attract one million tourists a year.

“The Chinese government is interested in supporting Kenya’s tourism sector,” said Tourism Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie.

Following a series of terror attacks that have caused tourist numbers to fall, the sector has incurred heavy losses. Up to 3,000 workers have been laid off as hotels close down after tourists left the

country as a security measure.

“We have seen 50 per cent of hotels in Kilifi close down due to tourist drought,” Philip Chai, Chairman of the Kilifi Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) says.

Speaking after US, UK, Australia and France evacuated hundreds of tourists from Kenya’s coast last week, Kandie urged the countries to review their strategy.

She said the move was a major blow to the sector.

Wang Zhifa, the Vice- Chairman of China’s National Tourism Administration, says the partnership will help improve facilities in hospitality and aviation industries.

The move is expected to boost tourist numbers by linking parties on both market ends. Should the move succeed, it will be a relief for an industry that is one of Kenya’s biggest foreign exchange earners.

The sector employs more than 150,000 people.

ILO says forced labourers generate Sh13.2tr annually In a year, forced labour generates illegal profits of at least $150billion (Sh13.2trillion).

The amount is three times more than previously estimated, a study by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has revealed.

The report says more than 21 million people are in forced labour across the world with migrant workers being the majority. Nearly half of all forced labourers work in Asia, 18 per cent in Africa and almost 10 per cent in Latin America.

The ILO says no profit has been used to pay the workers or paid as tax revenue.

Two thirds of the illegal profits are from the sex industry which generates $99billion (Sh8.7trillion), and the rest from domestic labour.

Construction, mining and utilities generate 34 billion US dollars (Sh2.9trillion) and $9 billion (Sh791 billion from agriculture, including forestry and fishing, $8 billion (Sh703.2 billion).

The organisation says a large portion of the forced labour is controlled by organised crime networks and is difficult to combat. It has urged governments to address the cause of the vice, including

poverty, lack of training and job opportunities.

In 2005, the annual illegal profits from forced labour was $44billion or about Sh3.9 trillion.

Law allows buyers to end Internet deals With the introduction of the Consumer Protection Act, Kenyans are entitled to a set of standards that service providers must meet.

One of the standards stipulates that the service provider is responsible for contracts signed over the Internet.

“A supplier who enters into an agreement over the internet for the supply of goods or services is required to disclose certain prescribed information,” states the Act. This means anyone selling goods or services online must be clear on the terms of the agreement with a customer. l The supplier must provide the consumer with chance to accept or refuse an agreement. They must also allow customers to correct errors before entering into the agreement. l Internet-based business are therefore required by law

to have either a ‘button’ or an option that lets customers cancel purchases in case they change minds. l In situations where a supplier fails to meet the standards, a consumer has the right to terminate an internet agreement. l The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) says if a consumer believes he has been misled, they can point out the error and demand a refund or report the trader to the Consumer Affairs Division of CCK. l The government has set up a nine-member committee to ensure consumer rights are not violated during such business deals.

Briquette sellers make 3 times the minimum wage Eighty-two per cent of urban households use charcoal as a major source of energy, a study from Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP) a small businesses NGO, has revealed. However, charcoal use has been dwindling as many consumers have resorted to other sources of energy like briquettes.

Charcoal consumption in Kenya has fallen from about 2.5 million tonnes to less than 1.6 million over the past 10 years. Briquettes are small bricks made from raw materials like leaves, saw dust, cow dung and

charcoal ash.

A briquette seller makes Sh1, 250 per day or Sh37, 500 a month, a study on dealers in Kibera has shown. This is almost three times the minimum wage, which stands at Sh13, 674. Sellers get their raw material from farms, factories carpentry shops and charcoal dealers.

Ten small cans of charcoal dust cost them about Sh200.

This is enough to make them 100 briquettes, which are sold at an average price of Sh12.50 apiece. The cost of starting a briquette business is about Sh3, 000.

He was cutting down his mango trees when he learned about a fly trapping technique that Senegalese farmers were using to deal with the pests.

“I have been involved in mango farming for the last 10 years. At no other time has the effect of fruit flies been more devastating than last year when I lost over 80 per cent of my yield. It’s still painful to

remember,” Mworia says.

A female fly is one of the deadliest threats to mango farmers across the country.

It infects ripening fruit by laying its eggs on it and resultant maggots bore into the fruit causing it to rot and fall off.

An acre of mango trees produces Sh810, 000 a year, 8 years after the crops have been planted, says Josephat Mulindo, an Officer from the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute. Mworia has half an acre,

meaning that he was losing close to Sh324, 000 every year.

The traps are simple made from a plastic bottle. The bottle is punctured with holes and a wad of cotton wool, soaked in sticky sugary solutions, or vinegar, placed in it to attract the flies. Once they are in the bottle, they are killed by pesticide at the bottom of the bottle.

One trap can capture over 50,000 flies in two weeks.

Gulf Bank targets women in loans plan The Gulf African Bank (GAB) has announced plans to increase lending to entrepreneurs in Kenya.

Through a program from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Bank will offer a greater range of products to small and medium enterprises (SME’s) in Kenya, especially those owned by women.

Eclampsia a risk for pregnant women Pregnancy can come with a couple of health concerns like the feared eclampsia.

Eclampsia is a life threatening complication that can send pregnant women into severe seizures, temporary blindness, placenta abruption, or worse, to a coma.

Placenta abruption is the detachment of the placenta from the uterus, which endangers the foetus. Usually, women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia are likely to go into the eclamptic phase.

Pre-eclampsia state is characterized by high blood pressure and high levels of protein in the urine. This condition often manifests itself in the second half of pregnancy although it can appear in the first half too.

Dr Jean Kagia, a Nairobi gynaecologist, says the cause of eclampsia is not known but high blood pressure

during pregnancy is a high risk factor. She says the condition can be managed if detected early.

If the pre-eclampsia state goes undetected, it can develop into eclampsia exposing both the mother and baby at risk. A woman who has this condition should avoid strenuous activities.

On other occasions, the condition can remain mild to the end or happen suddenly without prior indication.

Eclampsia is suspected to be the outcome of inadequate blood flow to the uterus, excessive body fat and poor nutrition.

Medical advice should be sought if one experiences dizziness, swelling in face or hands, abdominal pain, continuous severe headaches, nausea and constant vomiting.

Sport Amrouche set new record for Stars with Comoros win

After Harambee Stars’ narrow 1-0 win over Comoros in a first leg second round tie for the 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, the challenge is for the team to maintain momentum in the return clash.

Belgium based Johanna Omolo sent an unstoppable shot from 30 yards to score. Omolo’s goal means the team has registered six straight wins, an all time high.

A look into the history of the tournament from 1926 shows that Kenya has never won more than five straight matches in a row until Sunday.

Until then, the best winning streak, following victory in the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, stood at five when under Mohammed Kheri they won three straight games at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers – against Lesotho (3-0 - home), Zaire (0-1 away), Mozambique (4-1 home) and two games after – during Kenya’s Independence Day celebrations – both ended in 2-1 wins over Uganda and then Tanzania.

The stretch of five was matched during the regional showpiece held last year after wins over South Sudan (3-1), Zanzibar (2-0), Rwanda (1-0 -quarters), Tanzania (1-0 - semis) and Sudan (2-0 - final).

Besides setting the new straight wins record, Amrouche’s side equalled another rare fete, going five straight games without conceding a goal.

After letting in one in their 3-1 win group ‘A’ game over South Sudan on 30 November last year, the team made it five without conceding in the Sunday win over Comoros.

This ties with two other streaks when Kenya was at its best; during the Gossage Cup in 1958 and 59 and 50 years later as they qualified for the final phase of the 2010 World Cup/ Africa Cup of Nations in 2008.

In 1958, the Kenya team conceded once to Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in a 3-1 win as they started their chase for the Cup they had last won in 1953.

They then beat Zanzibar 4-0 and

Uganda 2-0 to lift the Cup. The next year, they retained the Cup by starting out a 0-0 draw against Uganda and winning over Zanzibar (5-0) and Tanganyika (2-0) in a final game to set Kenya’s record of five without conceding. Keeper Gabriel Musonye and Benedict Okoth as well as defenders Bernard Ajode, Tom Wanjala, Alfred Mukaisi, Isaac Lugonzo and Enoch Wiraga then made Kenya’s back line.

Francis Kimanzi’s team of 2008 matched the stretch of five without letting in a goal after beating Guinea and Zimbabwe by identical 2-0 wins, holding Zimbabwe and Malawi to 0-0 draws and beating Namibia 1-0 thereafter.

George Owino, Edgar Ochieng, Anthony Modo Kimani, John Njoroge, Lloyd Wahome, Mulinge Ndeto, keepers Arnold Origi and Noah Ayuko were all part of the achievement.

Kenya’s best record of straight games without letting in a goal stands at six – and is held by Marshal Mulwa’s team of 1983 that retained the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup for a third straight year.

Loew: No fear on Nuer, Lahm fitness Germany captain Philipp Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will be fit in time for the World Cup despite suffering injuries in the German Cup final, Bayern Munich announced on Tuesday.

Neuer hurt his right shoulder during a clearance in extra time in Bayern Munich’s 2-0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund, and Lahm was substituted after injuring his left ankle.

Police, Orange to fight for inaugural Nairobi Cup Kenya Police and Telkom Orange have declared plans to go for the inaugural Nairobi Cup that is set for May 31-June 2 at City Park Stadium.

The men premier league and women national league champions respectively are holders of the cup that serves as a curtain-raiser to the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) league that is set to begin in the first week of June.

Seven teams have entered the tournament which has been organised by the Nairobi Hockey Association (NHA).

More than seven teams have entered the tournament with Parklands and Karate Axiom in the men’s group. The women’s race has Strathmore and USIU-A. Orange coach Josp Openda says his team will avail two squads for the three-day tournament.

I’d love to see Mariga at St Mary’s, says Wanyama Kenya international midfielder McDonald Mariga has been a long time target for Southampton FC. And his younger brother Victor Wanyama relishes a chance to partner with him at the club.

This comes as Inter Milan reportedly keep track of Wanyama and are hopeful his brother could talk him into joining the Italian giants.

“First things first; I will not be leaving St Mary’s any time soon. I have not received offers and even if they were to come, I am happy here,” he said.

“On the other note I could love to play alongside Mariga. He remains a good professional and although injuries have not done him any good, I am happy he has responded well,” said Wanyama.

Mariga, who was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2010, said he will not renew his contract. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder, who has been capped over 31 times by his country, will be allowed to leave Inter.

“After my stay at Inter and Italy for such a long time, I believe time is right for me to try other new avenues. The past couple of seasons have not been far from great for me, but know my injury is okay. I want to play regularly, where, I don’t know yet,” said Mariga.

Wanyama joined Saints from Celtic last summer and the south-coast outfit will be keen to keep hold of the 22-year-old as a number of big names are set to quit St Mary’s.

Woods injury made him doubt he could play again Tiger Woods has admitted that his recent back injury was so exhausting that it caused him to doubt whether he would play golf again.

“Forget about playing golf at the highest level. I couldn’t get out of bed,” Woods said.
