GMOs solution to food crisis From Page 1 Kenyans should embrace other traditional crops as staple food to guard against chronic food insecurity caused by maize shortage.

Experts have also urged the government to allow the growth of GMO foods as a solution to constant famine experienced in most parts of the country.

Eastern Africa researcher on Bio-Resource Innovations, Allan Liavoga, says GMO foods are not as risky as some critics have argued and called

for objective dialogue on the issue. He says the arguments against GMOs are not backed by scientific facts.

“I believe in science and GMO is about science. Those arguing against them should prove the negative effects scientifically,” he said. He said GM foods have been consumed in USA, Europe and some African countries without harmful effects.

Dr Liavoga says GMOs are a solution to the constant famine experienced in Kenya.

Addressing a two-day

workshop for scientists and policy makers in Nairobi, Dr Liavoga told Kenyans to embrace traditional crops such as millet, sorghum, cassava to curb over-reliance on maize.

Ugali is the staple food for most Kenyan families and leads to starvation whenever there is a shortage of maize.

“Kenyans must change from a tradition of viewing maize as the only staple food. When we do not harvest enough of it, we push the demand up causing a rise in price as is being currently witnessed,”

he said.

He said the National Cereals and Produce Board must offer competitive prices to farmers after good harvests to avoid maize from rotting in the hands of farmers.

“Poor prices discourage farmers from selling maize to the board, although they do not have proper storage facilities. A lot of the maize rusts or goes to waste, leaving the country starving a few months later,” the deputy programme manager said.

He said alternative foods

are resistant to drought and diseases.

“Maize production has been reduced because of necrosis, the viral disease that causes withering and drying of the plant. Crop rotation of cassava, millet of sorghum will easily eliminate the disease because as we stand now we do not have a remedy,” says the expert.

He has called for more active extension services in educating farmers on crop rotation and the benefit of other food crops that would diversify

harvesting options.

He asked the government to support the implementation of a biological pesticide control policy to boost quality and quantity of farm produce.

He said use of bio-chemical to control pest guarantees higher production and less contaminated food because “use of living organisms in control of pesticides do not kill micro-organisms that help fix nutrients into the soil for crops in the soil such as nitrogen fixing bacteria.

Malawi poll crisis deepens Malawi’s electoral authorities say they will re-open ballot boxes after finding evidence of irregularities as the country was thrown into a constitutional crisis over its disputed poll.

On Saturday, President Joyce

Banda declared the election “null and void”, claiming there were “serious irregularities” with the poll.

She issued a decree that vote counting should stop and called for fresh elections in 90 days. But hours later, the

high court issued an injunction preventing the president from annulling the poll.

Banda alleged that people had voted multiple times, ballots had been tampered with as computerised voter counting system collapsed.

He said the agreement is a legal document that must be honoured.

Dr Mukhwaya appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and order the university chiefs to honour the payments.

YOUNG MEN SAVE MORE MONEY THAN WOMEN

Elders want State to compensate bomb victims Elders have asked the government to compensate the families of 12 people killed in the twin Gikomba blasts 10 days ago.

The Kikuyu Council of Elders chairman, Patrick Gaithuma, made the plea on Saturday during the burial of Eunice Irungu, one of the bombing victims, in Laikipia East.

“The government should now give enough financial support to the families of the victims because provision of security is its responsibility,” Mr Gaithuma said.

He said the families had lost their breadwinners and proposed that they be compensated Sh2 million each.

Mr Gaithuma also called for more vigilance among members of the public and urged the state’s security intelligence to do more to weed out criminals.

Young men are more likely to save money than their female counterparts, a study on personal economics has shown. Since November 2013, 60 per cent of the youth who opened bank accounts were male, says the research, which came from YouthSave, an organisation that tests and develops money saving products for young people.

“Youth who save are more fiscally prudent and have a positive and future-oriented view,” explains Moses Njenga of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA). KIPPRA is a local think tank that studies social, economic and political information to help

better the lives of the public.

Duncan Harvey, the country Director for social development group, Save the Children, mentions that a number of young people would rather save their cash than spend it on unnecessary luxuries. YouthSave unveiled a two-year saving programme, dubbed ‘Smata’ in 2011 to test that theory.

The move targeted 36,000 participants, who were able to save monthly contributions of Sh47, bringing the total to Sh21 million

by November, 2013. The programme has since added 90,000 more participants, giving them each what is known as a ‘Smata’ account with Postbank.

Sisi win expected at Egyptians go to the polls Voters in Egypt began casting their ballots today to choose a new president for the second time in two years.

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) could soon be converted into a banking institution to make it more effective in loan recovery from defaulters.

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said a Bill that also seeks to restructure the board will soon be tabled before parliament for discussion.

According to Prof Kaimenyi, the restructuring is intended to help the board respond better to the growing demand for higher education financing.

Helb is facing a cashcrunch after the Treasury failed to increase its budgetary allocation despite the increased number of students eligible for loans.

Defaulters, who owe the agency some Sh8 billion, were expected to plug the deficit, but Helb chief executive

Charles Ringera says that is not reliable.

“The loans board will in future operate like a bank whose enhanced revolving fund will have structured ways of recovering monies given to students,” Prof Kaimenyi said during the first graduation ceremony of South Eastern University in Kitui over the weekend.

He said students will be required to provide collateral for loans if the Bill is adopted.

He explained that the move is aimed at minimizing defaulting on loan repayment but that interest charged on the loans will still remain low.

At the same time, the minister said that on-going talks between the government and development financiers will help it raise the close to Sh10 billion needed to fund student loans.

Commuters on the Kahawa West route in Nairobi were at the weekend robbed after a gang carjacked a matatu they were travelling in. Four passengers who had boarded the 14-seater matatus hijacked the vehicle and diverted it towards Dandora where they robbed commuters of cash and phones at gunpoint. The 10pm incident is the third over the last seven days. Last Wednesday,

more than 40 passengers who had boarded a bus from the city centre to Mwiki were robbed in similar circumstances.

Police have since arrested the matatu driver and conductor. Meanwhile, a suspect was killed and three others shot and seriously wounded by police in Githurai 45. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said the officers were alerted to a scene of alleged robbery.

14 poor counties get more funding The 14 underdeveloped counties will get more budgetary allocations from Treasury from next year. The counties are currently benefiting from the Equalisation Fund, which funds short term projects in the poor devolved units.

They will get Sh6.1 billion in the financial year beginning July 2015 after the Treasury and parliament agreed on the model for the fund in line with Public Finance Management Act. The money is supposed to be 0.5 percent of the latest audited annual government revenue although the Treasury has always based its calculations on the 2009/2010 audits, keeping amount unchanged. The agreement means the allocation will now nearly double.

Turkana will be the biggest beneficiary with an allocation of Sh385.6 million followed by Mandera which will get Sh369 million. Marsabit, Mandera and Wajir have been allocated Sh3.4 billion to spend for the financial year 2014/2015.

Kilifi, Wajir and Narok are the other big beneficiaries with allocations of Sh317 million, Sh308.5 million, and Sh284.2 million respectively.

Lamu’s Sh110 million is the smallest allocation among the 14. Other counties also benefitting from the fund are Isiolo, Samburu, West Pokot, Garissa, Kwale, Tana River and Taita Taveta.

The funds are expected to boost provision of basic services like education, water and sanitation, food security, health and electricity in the counties which have lagged behind in terms of development.

The Fund is an additional money allocated to the counties apart from the devolved funds that are disbursed to meet their financial needs.

Kenyans to enjoy vacations in Uhuru’s tourism revival plan Kenyans are set to enjoy paid up vacations following the announcement of new measures aimed at revamping tourism.

President Uhuru Kenyatta last week said Kenyans working in corporate and business entities will now enjoy paid up vacations in the tourism sector as one way to energize the industry.

Uhuru made the announcement after a meeting with tourism sector stakeholders at State House Nairobi. He said the government is taking specific measures to stimulate the tourism sector, including giving at least 25,000 Kenyans a chance to go for a week’s holiday every month at the expense of their employers.

Other measures waiver of VAT on air ticketing services supplied by travel agents, and payment of all income tax-related refunds owed to tourism industry players by the Kenya Revenue Authority not later than Thursday next week.

The President also said the government will reduce park fees to $80 from $90 for regional and international tourists, and to Sh1000, down from Sh1, 200 for domestic tourists.

To increase flights to Moi and Malindi airports, the President announced the reduction of landing charges for both local and international flights by 40 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

To give impetus to tourism sector recovery, President Kenyatta directed that all budgetary resources at national government earmarked for foreign travel in Supplementary Budget II, will be reallocated to domestic travel. He also urged other arms of governments to do the same.

The company, which provides clearing and forwarding services for air and sea, has been reducing activities in its core businesses (Transport and Logistics) in order to increase them in alternative business segments.

From June 2012 to June 2013, its revenues increased from Sh229 million to Sh235 million, say Market Analysts from Investment company, Amana Capital.

During the same period, the company cut its direct costs by almost half from Sh312.535 million to Sh195.404 million and its administrative expenses from Sh68.698 million to Sh20,949 million.

The centre says farmers can harvest between 30 and 40 per cent more crops using this method.

Makokha says that in Mumias District, crop rotation is a relatively new concept. Many farmers in the area grow sugarcane, a popular cash crop, yet continuous cultivation over long

periods of time has left soils overexploited.

He says that before the use of soya beans, his farm, like many others, would undergo continuous maize cultivation with limited crop rotation.

Today, he can make about Sh336, 000 per harvest up from an average yield of Sh240, 000.

The company’s operating costs rose by 20 per cent to Sh2.4 billion. “In terms of profitability, pretax profit stayed pretty much at the same level by rising from Sh1.65 billion in 2012 to Sh1.67 billion in 2013,” Amana explained.

Human memory can soon be recordable

Science may soon help people who have suffered head injuries regain their memories through memory chip implantation.

Teams of neuroscientists have found a possible way of storing sensitive information in microchips in the brain.

They plan to implant the device in volunteers after trials in rats and monkeys worked.

The researchers have based their study on the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain where short-term memories are converted to long term memories.

Researches from Stanford University were able to create a 3-D animation that renders the hippocampus in a mouse to be transparent.

The researchers believe they have been able to unravel how long-term memories are made from short-term memories, stored then retrieved.

This makes them believe with certainty that they can replicate this process in

’till death do us part: A spouse prepares to fix a wedding ring on their partner. Research shows that some young people prefer to engage in come-we-stay relationships that are recognised by law.

First comes love, then a relationship before marriage. At least that is what is assumed before two adults can be declared man and wife.

In Kenya, civil, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and customary marriages are recognised by law.

A Bill was recently signed into law by the President that legalised polygamy in customary marriages.

In a study conducted by the UN, the average age of marriage in Kenya for females was 22 years and 26 for men.

However the rules of marriage have changed. Many young people prefer engaging

in “come we stay” relationships, which the government also recognises as a legal marriage after six months of cohabitating.

In the US, the average age of marriage for women is 27 years and 30 for men, based on a 2011 report by Pew Research Centre.

A country’s income can determine the age at which people get married.

People in developed countries marry later than people in developing nations.

Western European countries’ average age of marriage is ranked at above 30 years while Afghanistan has children marrying as early as 20 years.

Meet the Kid named Willy Willys Kidwilly Wanjie, an afro rapper from Nairobi, is the latest addition to the growing list of the country’s young rappers.

The first impression Kidwilly gives when you first meet him is that he is a shy guy He is so soft spoken that one wonders how he transforms into an energetic bubble on stage. Asked if he experiences stage fright while performing, he confidently said, “No fear at all. I have undergone rigorous training by a skilled music tutor who taught me how to handle it before, during and after performing.”

The 20-year-old lyricist started rapping two years ago while still in high school. So far, he has released three tracks and

performed at big events like the Samsung Ziki Stars. Music is his full time profession and he has not yet began to study for his degree.

“In my songs, the messages are different and about the world, not me,” he said adding that he does not want to expose his personal life through music.

In his career Kidwilly has shared the stage with some of Kenya’s best rappers, among them Khaligraph Jones and singer Abbas.

Of all the challenges he has experienced, Kidwiilly sites low listenership of local music as the most troubling. “Local channels embrace international music more than our own,” he said.

It is for this reason that most

of the local artists are sought after by international labels for recording deals.

The Kenyan music industry, he says, has been turned into a battlefield where artists fight to outdo each other but this is not the case for Willy.

“I’m not here to compete with anyone but to have fun and work with some of our established musicians like Anto Neosoul,” he said with a serious look.

Although things are working out for him, Kidwilly would not pass a chance to sign with an international record label like Sony or Universal Studios.

Currently, he is neither managed nor signed to any label but he has a publicist.

Record-setters owe it to proper preparation Kenya women’s 4x1500m quartet set a new World record by more than half-a-minute at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas over the weekend.

The previous World best of 17:05.72 was set by the same team, with the exception of Obiri in last month’s national trials held in Nairobi.

Obiri, a World 1500m bronze medalist, also a late inclusion into the team, said it was all down to hard work from the entire

“I was indeed happy to be included in the team. To my team mates all I can say is that was great partnership,” said Obiri, who expressed optimism that her team would do well in future meets.

“Most of the athletes here are preparing for Commonwealth Games trials with IAAF Diamond league meets to follow, but I must admit that our team is gearing well,” she weighed in.

Cherono, echoed Obiri’s sentiments, while emphasizing how good sticking to initial tactics proved to be.

“Our tactic was to start with good pace and pass in on to the last member. This played on well, especially because we took a lot of time in training,” noted the runner who started the race to set a good pace for the team with a 4:07.4.

Brazil World Cup most lucrative in FIFA history The 2014 World Cup is set to be the most lucrative — and the most expensive— in the tournament’s history.

FIFA, world football’s governing body, said the Brazil event, for which almost three million tickets are available, was almost sold out. It has warned fans to beware of fake tickets that are in circulation.

Commercial revenues are likely to bring in close to Sh340B, and the organization believes it will spend

around Sh170B on the tournament.

But secretary general Jerome Valcke said: “The financial success -- it is done. We have never sold so many tickets.”

FIFA has already paid Sh18B to the Brazil organising committee, with more likely to follow as disputes over payment for essential services are resolved. Earlier this year, the governing body settled a bill of almost Sh1.7B for extra power generators needed in broadcasting.

The prize money available to the winning nation’s football governing body is also at a record level – Sh2.9B But host nation Brazil must foot the largest bill ever faced by a country staging the World Cup, with costs likely to come in at Sh1,190B. That huge bill covers the cost of either refurbishing or building stadiums for the event, improving infrastructure and beefing up logistical and security plans to cope

with an influx of well over half a million visitors.

The cost to the taxpayer of staging the tournament has sparked protests in Brazil. Many feel the money that has gone on hosting the World Cup would have been better spent on hospitals, schools and tackling the problems caused by widespread poverty.
