Kidnap cases alarm police WEDNESday, may 28, 2014

The Kenya Missing and Unidentified Persons (KMUPS), a community based organisation that collaborates with police and other NGOs, says the cases are worrying.

“Abductions have now become rampant and we are appealing to parents to be on the lookout,” says KMUPS founder Susan Nekesa.

They say between September and mid October 2012, more than five children were kidnapped. Even after three of them were later traced, two are still missing to date.

Cases of child abduction have reached alarming proportions and police have appealed to parents to

educate children on how to avoid abductors.

Deputy OCPD for Ongata Rongai, Mr Francis Siror, says parents should teach children how to avoid being kidnapped. “I have seen school kids scramble for lifts from strangers while going or leaving school,” he says.

Such situations make the children open to abductions or child trafficking and prostitution.

The scene of the young ones fighting for free rides from strangers at Langata Barracks bus stop, mostly from Lang’ata Barracks Primary School, has become a tradition.

because they are less costly.

“At times, good Samaritans don’t charge us, so we prefer waiting for such instead of matatus who charge us a lot of cash,” she says.

Police have warned that the trend is risky and parents should warn the young ones against placing themselves in the line of danger with strangers. Last year, kidnapping cases dramatically went up in the city as children below the age of 18 became the main target.

What is more shocking is that even adults who are expected to be conversant with such risks also expose themselves to avoidable abduction risks and other dangerous conditions.

People would rather wait for strangers to ferry them to their destinations instead of paying a matatu and be assured of safety. At the Wilson bus terminal, Langata Road, Rongai and many more, the trend is the order of the day.

Others find themselves in the face of abduction without calling for it, especially where people are taken hostage in public transport vehicles, schools or hotels and restaurants.

Police say more than 29 cases of abduction have been reported since January. May has recorded more than five cases of missing persons.

Some have been found and reunited with loved ones but others are still missing.

Tips on how to avoid being abducted or what to do when caught in a kidnapper’s snare.

If you must meet a new acquaintance, make sure someone knows where you’re going and who you’re meeting. Leave word with a family member or friend where you’re going. If possible, give the name of the person you’re about to meet and other details you might know. Meet them in a crowded place or somewhere other people can see you. Heavy human traffic is a major deterrent for kidnappers and may just save your life To prevent kidnapping in your own property, close doors and gates and install locks or alarms.

Kimaiyo lifts Cord’s Uhuru Park rally ban

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has lifted the ban he imposed on political rallies.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) today revealed that Kimaiyo has given them the greenlight to hold their Saturday rally at Uhuru Park.

Led by senators Moses Wetangula and James Orengo and former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim, Homa Bay County MP Gladys Wanga and Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo, the group met the IG early Wednesday morning and were allowed to go ahead with the rally.

“We have engaged the IG on a wide range of issues touching on the announcement he made and we have agreed that the rally shall go on,” Wetangula told journalists outside Parliament buildings Wednesday morning.

“We will also hold rallies in various parts of the country in coming days,” he said.

The programme will run as scheduled and various issues will be discussed in the rally, including insecurity and corruption.

The Bungoma Senator faulted Kimaiyo for the earlier ban saying no previous Cord rally has had security challenges or marred with violence.

Maalim said the police boss promised to provide adequate security during the rally to safeguard Cord leaders and supporters.

Shortly after announcing the ban Tuesday, Kimaiyo appeared in a live TV interview and seemed to contradict an earlier opinion by implying that rallies could go on provided they did not interfere with preparations for Madaraka Day due to be celebrated on June 1.

Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony today began his appearance before a special senate committee formed to hear his impeachment by the county assembly.

Prof Chepkwony appeared before the committee at about 10.30 today and was expected to defend himself against the ouster.

Earlier, he had indicated that the MCAs move was unfair and that he is thoroughly prepared to defend himself.

The senate committee had on Tuesday met to strategise on how to proceed with the hearing Prof Chepkwony becomes the second governor to face the senate over impeachment just after Martin Wambora of Embu .

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board has warned doctors not to violate the Patients Rights Charter, a law that champions the rights of those seeking treatment.

“The right to emergency treatment as contained in Article 43, Section 2 of the Constitution must be adhered to by all,” said Board Chairman, Professor George Magoha Prof Magoha was speaking during the launch of the Patients Rights Charter at Green Hills Hotel in Nyeri over the weekend.

This is not the first time that patients’ rights have come into question. In 2006, the Ministry

of Health took measures to improve patient satisfaction through a charter of patients’ rights. The aim was to change the public’s poor opinion of nurses in public hospitals, which assumed that they routinely ignored patients’ right to respectful treatment.

“For patients to enjoy their rights in the hospital setting, a clear definition of roles and relationships and public education on strategies of asserting their rights without intimidation are necessary,” says a statement from the Health and Human Rights Journal, a medical document that seeks to ensure the fair treatment of patients.

Grimy Eastlands estates to go in new City regeneration plan Old estates in Eastlands could soon be demolished to pave way for highrise residential apartments, where residents can work and live if a proposal by the Nairobi City county government is adopted.

Governor Evans Kidero yesterday launched an ambitious plan to rebuild Nairobi, which will include new railway lines and roads connecting city suburbs.

The blueprint, which aims at reducing traffic congestion in the CBD, is also targeting the improvement of infrastructure and water provision services.

The old county government-owned estates like Bahati, Maringo, Jericho, Shauri Moyo, Kaloleni, Jerusalem, Uhuru, and Mbotela, among others, will be demolished and mini-cities built in their place. The plan entails turning each estate into a minicity of 650, 000 residents with better housing and commercial use of the space. The

Eastlands re-development will act as a flagship project that will see at least a third of the area put under private sector development.

These proposals are contained in the new master plan to improve the city launched yesterday by Kidero.

The Eastlands re-development plan will serve as a template for similar consolidated urban codes across the city which will have all-inclusive services as part of a move to decentralise services for residents.

Nairobi’s previous master plan drawn in 1973 expired 13 years ago (1973-2000).

The new Sh300 million plan, funded by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) is expected to be rolled out from July 2014 and will be viable for the next 17 years. Already, the construction of Outer Ring Road, which connects most Eastlands estates, has been tendered.

Sudanese woman on apostasy death row gives birth Lawyer Elshareef Ali, who is representing the Sudanese woman awaiting execution for converting to Christianity from Islam, has confirmed that his client has given birth to a baby girl in jail near the capital, Khartoum. Meriam

Yehya Ibrahim Ishag, who married a Christian man, was sentenced to hang for apostasy earlier this month after refusing to renounce Christianity.

The sentence will reportedly be carried out in two years to

allow her to care for her baby.

The judgment was passed by the sharia court which also convicted her of adultery on the grounds that her marriage to a Christian man from South Sudan was void under Sudan’s version of Islamic law,

which bars Muslim women from marrying non-Muslims. Sudan’s population is largely Muslim. For this the judge sentenced her to 100 lashes, which will reportedly be carried out when she has recovered from giving birth.

Ms Ibrahim was raised as an Orthodox Christian, her mother’s religion, because her father, a Muslim, was reportedly absent during her childhood. According to Amnesty International, she was arrested and charged with

adultery in August 2013, and the court added the charge of apostasy in February 2014 when she said she was a Christian and not a Muslim.

She also has her 20-monthold son with her in prison since late February.

Officer hurt in matatu tout drama

A police officer was injured after a matatu driver he and his colleague had arrested rammed onto six vehicles along Waiyaki Way, Nairobi.

Four other motorists were injured after the officers arrested the driver for obstruction and asked him to drive to Kabete Police Station.

The driver jumped over into an opposite lane and rammed onto six other cars and escaped on foot. The officer and other motorists were taken to Kikuyu Mission Hospital. “We are looking for the driver who escaped in the confusion. He had also abused the officers,� said Ombati.

Police are investigating an incident in which a man jumped to death from the 7th floor of Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi (below).

The deceased had been a patient at the facility before the Tuesday evening incident.

Police say they are investigating whether the male patient was pushed out of the building or committed suicide.

Nairobi deputy police boss Moses Ombati said they are investigating the matter.

This is not the first time for such incident to be reported at the same floor of the hospital. Police say up to three patients die every month in similar circumstances.

institutions have been cleared to offer the courses.

The Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board has the mandate of registering, regulating and licensing doctors.

This means students graduating from the institutions will be recognised professionals in the medical field.

He commended the agency for exemplary work, saying the regulator had approved 60 other new medical and dental internship training centres across the country.

Refugees must go to camps, says Ole Lenku The government has reiterated that refugees must obey the law and remain in designated camps even as Somali pleads for an end to the deportation of its nationals in Kenya.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku, through his lawyer, told the High Court in Nairobi that the directive he issued in March ordering all refugees in urban areas back to their camps does not threaten

their dignity in any way.

He was responding in a case in which some 500 refugees have challenged the return-to-camp order on the grounds that it is blanket and diminishes their dignity.

The order was followed by the Operation Usalama Watch, which has seen close to 5, 000 people, most of them refugees , arrested in Nairobi. Some of the

arrested were deported. The Somali government has, however, taken issue with the deportation saying such a mass move could compromise crucial security improvements made by regional nations against the al-Shabaab.

Somalia’s State Minister for Interior and Federalism Affairs, Mohamud Moalim Yahye, said: “the unplanned and uncoordinated deportation of

The practice of washing cars in the lake, especially, has been cited as the biggest risk to aquatic life because of the oil and other motor waste being washed into the lake daily.

Lake Victoria Water Service Board chairman Joseph Weya said many livelihoods and lives are now at risk due to the pollution of the lake.

“We are collaborating with the five counties to ensure we make the water in the lake cleaner than it is,” he said in Kisumu on Monday.

He said a lot of impurities haves been dumped into the lake causing a decline in fish population. “Many people depend on this lake for survival and we want to save their livelihoods by ensuring that the water is clean,” he added. He said the streams and rivers flowing into the lake will also be included in the clean-up.

“We are going to ensure that the up streams are because that is where dirty water that gets into the lake comes from,” he said. Consequently, the parastatal yesterday distributed exhaust trucks to help clean water entering the lake. The trucks, which will be taken to Kericho, Keroka, and Isebania towns, will be used to improve the quality of river water in catchment areas.

Mr Weya said the project is part of an extension project that the water board is taking to expand its reach to the communities.

Customers’ doom as ATM change deadline looms June 1 may spell doom for bank customers as it marks the deadline for clients to replace their magnetic strip cards with Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) cards.

The magnetic cards have been prone to duplication by fraudsters, who use the copies to steal cash from bank accounts.

The EMV cards, however, are resistant to invadors.

From June 1, banks will bear the cost of any fraudulent

purchases made using a customer’s magnetic strip card. Consequently, the banks have taken drastic measures to check the losses.

Customers who will not have collected new ATM cards by May 31 could have their current magnetic strip versions disabled.

Late last month, the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) said 70 per cent of cards in Kenya have been converted

to chip and pin technology.

Banks have been contacting customers through text messages and e-mails to ensure they replace the outdated cards.

“We are going to disable the old cards and this is what will force those who have not come to collect their cards to come forward,” Commercial Bank of Africa officer James Kamau said.

The country’s forestry sector has been growing at a slow but steady rate, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has revealed. The department says more than 742,000 jobs were created in 2013. While most of the jobs are in the informal sector, forestry and agriculture employ 345,900 people.

Dubbed the Consumer Protection Act, the law bans unfair trade practices and transactions that affect consumer rights.

Such practices include under-cutting and over-pricing of goods and services.

The law seeks to monitor key activities such as mergers and acquisitions.

If, for instance, a company is bought out by a rival, customers should not experience a hike in the cost of services because the rival needs to recover its investment.

The Consumer Protection Act has called for the punishment of businesses that disobey the law.

Should a consumer feel cheated in a transaction, they should report the service provider to either the Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) or take the matter to court.

“We have to have consumers represented in every regulatory agency so that the right of the consumer is fully tracked to ensure compliance,” says COFEK Secretary-General, Stephen Mutoro.

Kula Korner rights up for sale The Kula Korner Management Group is selling license rights to restaurant entrepreneurs.

The group’s managing director, John Avoga Ongino, says this is part of the company’s expansion plans, which include a public listing within the next four years. For a one-off fee of Sh1.5 million, restaurant

owners will have access to the Kula Korner ‘Fast Food Express’ franchise which deals in take-away services. For Sh2 million the same business owners can secure the rights to run their very own Kula Korner Restaurant.

brand name as well as its trademarks. They will have access to the chain’s business methods, its standard recipes for signature dishes, and training to ensure that the brand remains successful. Ongino says Kula Korner, whose core business is inthe food and beverages, recognizes how difficult it is

for small business to secure the funding needed to get a solid start. As part of its expansion strategy, the Group will be giving them the chance to bank on its continued success.

“When you have a backing of a popular and proven franchise, it can be easier to get sufficient funds at a reasonable rate and

schedules to get off on the right foot,” Ongino says.

Research has shown that only 10 per cent of new established eateries survive for more than 18 months, with the rest doomed to fail. Their collapse is often caused by a lack of professionalism and inadequate capital.

The double gain of plastic waste recycling There is always money to be made from rubbish, one just needs to turn up the nose and dig into the dirt. That’s what plastic waste collectors do and on a good day, they stand to make Sh6, 000 from their business. Plastic waste is shredded and sold at Sh24 per kg.

The United Nations (UN) says Nairobi generates 3,200 tonnes of waste daily. Only 850 tonnes reach the Dandora dumpsite. The rest is unaccounted for.

While it is difficult to tell how much of this is hard plastic, the National Environment Management Authority says

the waste provides employment for over 200,000 people across the country addressing the plastics menace in Kenya.

Practical Action works with a group of recyclers known Nakuru Waste Collectors and Recyclers Management (NAWACOM), which has a membership of 146.

“We have a plastic shredder, for which we were supported

by Practical Action,” says Isaack Mwangi, the chairman of NAWACOM. The group gets regular orders and has a market for the crushed plastic in Nairobi.

Farmer ducks middlemen to make killing in tomatoes Emma Ndegwa was an employee at a law firm earning Sh40,000 a month until a visit to her matrimonial home in Kitale in 2007 changed the course of her life entirely. The visit, she says, set her on a new path to wealth as an agricultural entrepreneur. She quit her job and now earns up to Sh20,000 a day. When violence broke out after the 2007 elections, she found herself stuck with her 3-month-old son in Kitale for part of December and the better part of January 2008.

There, she witnessed her brotherin-law selling tomatoes to brokers.

“The brokers would buy a 64kg crate at Sh250,” she recalls. Rarely would they buy the crate at Sh500, which was what many local farmers would prefer.

She learnt that the brokers sold the tomatoes in Kitale town, 12km away, at much higher prices. She also found that farmers who took their tomatoes there were forced to sell at low prices.

Brokers would insist that there was a glut, even in January, the peak pricing month for tomatoes in the area. Emma decided to sideline these middlemen by selling her supply directly to hotels and su-

permarkets within the town.

Six months later, she had made her first million. “Since I was born, it was the first time I touched a million,” she laughs Emma buys five crates of tomatoes from her brother-in-law at Sh1, 000 per crate and sells the tomatoes at no less than Sh40 per kilogram, giving her roughly Sh20,000 a day. Today, she and her husband own a manufacturing company that, in a week, earns Sh1.6 million. They currently employ 26 workers. “You can start anywhere if you are determined,” says the successful mother of two.

This business model is one way of creating access to credit for SMEs, many of which fail due to lack of funding.

Once they are convinced of the prospects of the business Shield lends up to 200 per cent of the average monthly sales. “We take the risk on you and your business,” the lender says.

A borrower gets the money between 48 and 72 hours after approval. They do not charge interest. Instead, Shield requires weekly or daily payments to recover its loan.

“The amount is small and paid daily or weekly, so you barely notice it.” says Shield.

Kenya fights to reduce mother, child mortality In 2013, State of the World’s Mothers, a report by Save the Children showed that Kenya was among the 20 countries with the highest rates of newborn deaths in the world.

According to the findings, two babies die each minute on their first day on earth.

Globally, one million babies die each year on the day they are born, making the first day by far the riskiest day of a person’s life in almost every country in the world.

Child deaths result from avoidable situation like poor nutrition, poverty, poor health of mothers, early marriages before girls’ bodies have fully matured, and poor health facilities or inadequate trained personnel to aid in child delivery.

Wing walking literally takes thrill seeking to new heights.

Wing walking is moving on the wings of an airplane when it is in the air. The first wing walker to perform this stunt was Ormer Locklear, a 26-year old who first climbed out onto the lower wings during his pilot training in the Army Air Service during World War I. On November 8, 1918, Locklear stunned the crowd at Barron Field, Texas, with his wing-walking stunts and many more ventured into the game.

The competition blurred the lines between the ever-present danger of tripping and instant death.

Wing-walking proved to be the most dangerous thrill of its time when in less than two years, eight daredevils perished during the infancy of the sport.

Locklear himself died in 1920 performing a stunt for a film. Today, the stunt is performed in Europe, mostly in the UK by a team called AeroSuperBatics.

Brazil scouting possible rivals for top prize Brazil have prepared dossiers on 16 possible opponents who could stand between them and a sixth World Cup, assistant manager Carlos Alberto Parreira said on Tuesday.

The three other teams in Group A, Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon, have been scouted and analysed for strengths and weaknesses.

All four Group B teams Australia, Chile, the Netherlands and Spain, one of whom could meet Brazil in the second round, have also been analysed by the team’s two main scouts Alexandre Gallo and Roque Junior.

Potential quarter-final and semi-final opponents have also been analysed.

“Sixteen teams have been totally watched and scouted,” Parreira said on Tuesday as Brazil’s players gathered for their first day of training at their base at the Granja Comary, 100 kilometres from Rio and where the team will remain for the duration of the June 12-July 13 tournament.

Brazil begin the World Cup against Croatia in Sao Paulo on June 12 and Parreira said he is confident the home side will leave the Maracana a month later with the trophy.

“The champions have arrived,” Parreira said shortly after the first players arrived at the camp.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has expressed his satisfaction with the fitness of his players as they continue with their World Cup preparations.

“We’ve created a top sporting environment because we know our players have to be in the best possible condition,” he said in Lagos in Portugal at the conclusion of a week-long training camp where the team did intensive physical and tactical work.

“I’ve seen the first signs of a good team spirit developing.

I can see it in the way my players communicate with each other.”

That is just as well because the Dutch have a history of internal squabbling and shooting themselves in the foot in major tournaments.

Van Gaal singled out Bayern

Munich man Robben and Galatasaray midfielder Sneijder as his two key players for Brazil.

“There are few players who look after their bodies the way Robben does.

The way he does everything, starting with his warm-ups, I find it all fantastic,” Van Gaal said.

The group was tougher than Australia’s final qualifying section in which only Japan, the runaway group winners, were regarded as one of Asia’s top sides.

In short, all these teams look better credentialed than the Socceroos.
