Judge throws out suit against alcoblow

TOO YOUNG TO RETIRE Two Judges, who were retired after attaining the age of 70 years, will continue to serve in the judiciary until a case, through which they are challenging their retirement is finalised. Justice George Odunga decreed that the Judges, Supreme Court Judge, Justice Philip Tunoi and High Court Judge David Onyancha, remain in office until their case is determined.

Justice Tunoi and Judge Onyancha want the retirement age for all judges to be moved up to 74 years instead of 70 years.

They want the court to prohibit the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Judiciary from removing them from office. The judges argued in court that there are two circulars one dated May 24, 2011 from the JSC informing

Bus firms cleared for night travel Night travel is set to resume after seven Public Service Vehicle (PSV) companies were given the greenlight to ferry passengers in darkness.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau said Modern Coast Express, Mash East Africa, Easy Coach, North Rift Shuttle, Eldoret Sacco, Transline and The Guardian bus companies have complied with the new regulations as set out by the National Transport and Safety Authority.

“A total of 338 vehicles belonging to the companies have been licensed to operate between 9pm and 6am. The National Transport Safety Authority has issued a special licence to the compliant companies and details of their buses have been issued to police,” he said in Nairobi on Monday.

Nairobi’s future bright, says Mastercard report

The living standards of Nairobi residents is projected to improve albeit marginally, findings of a new report have revealed.

This year’s MastreCard African Cities Growth Index investment in Nairobi will also go up as a result of infrastructural developments in the capital city.

The survey says potential direct foreign investors have shunned the city due to poor facilities, but the city has in the recent past embarked on correcting the situation.

“Nairobi slumps in terms of foreign direct investment and infrastructure, but a counter to this there is now significant investment in infrastructure in the city,” says the report. ACGI surveyed 49 African cities and ranked Nairobi at 19 with a score of 37 out of 80 points.

Ghana’s capital Accra led the pack cities with a high inclusive growth potential after scoring 50.9 points.

Accra which is home to some 2.3 million people is said to have a law and resources that can sustain and promote economic inclusivity among its residents. The cities were ranked based on political governance, access to clean

water, health, sanitation and electricity, education, foreign direct investment, mobile phone subscription and air travel connectivity.

Nairobi is at the medium-low growth rate, but shows a higher potential of improving lives of the more than four million residents, better than Johannesburg and Lagos.

Foreign and local investment is projected to give the people source of revenue and boost their purchasing power.

The report say the growth of potential cities will be determined by their willingness to embrace growth accelerating factors such as health, education, governance, infrastructure and partnership in businesses for a more inclusive growth. Nairobi falls behind Dar es Salaam in the East African block but was ahead of Kampala, Kigali and Bujumbura.

Some of the infrastructural projects in Nairobi include the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the city railway transport system and tarmacking and maintaining of feeder roads.

Another project includes the development of the eastern and western by-passes to decongest the city.

Ruto says State to build 60 youth colleges The Government will by the end of the year start the construction of 60 technical institutions in order to ensure the colleges equip the youth with technical skills.

Deputy President William Ruto said Sh4 billion has been set aside for the project to be rolled out in all counties over a three-year period. Addressing a funds drive meeting in aid of the Holy Family Girls High School at Chepalungu on Sunday, Ruto said each institution will cost Sh40 million.

Another Sh50 million will be used to equip the institutions.

“Construction work for the institutions is aimed at imparting technical knowledge to the youth to equip them with job seeking skills necessary for the growth of Kenya’s economy,’’ he said. NGOs, teachers fury over bid to trim NHIF board A bid to remove unions and Non Governmental Organisations from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) board has infuriated some stakeholders.

Teachers and NGOs have opposed an amendment bill which seeks to reduce the size of the national insurer’s board.

The State Law Miscellaneous Amendment Bill, which has already gone through the first and second reading in Parliament, seeks to cut the size of the board from the current 13 to seven members.

If passed, automatic seats reserved for teachers, farmers, doctors,

NGOs and insurers will be scrapped. The Bill which was tabled by House Majority Leader Aden Duale seeks to give the government more control over the fund as it will have five of the seven members appointed by the Executive.

“The Bill will reverse gains so far made,” the National Council of NGOs chairman Wilson Kipkazi said. Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion has threatened that teachers, whom he said contribute Sh7 billion annually to the fund, will stop remitting contributions if they do not have a representative in the board.

Prioritise maternal health, government tells counties The ministry of health has appealed to county governments to prioritise maternal and child health issues amid worrying statistics that up to 13,000 babies are born with HIV/AIDS annually.

Health Cabinet Secretary also revealed that the country is losing 5,000 women every year due to preventable complications arising from pregnancies.

“This trend is unacceptable and there is need to eliminate mother to child transmission,” he said.

According to the minister, 31 percent of children whose mothers die at birth also die within the first six months of delivery.

As such, he called on county governments to ensure adequate provision of health services to pregnant mothers

He was speaking at the Kenya Red Cross headquarters in South C, Nairobi after receiving equipment worth half a billion meant to support service delivery in some 480 health facilities across the country.

Transmission of HIV virus from mother to child occurs during pregnancy, labour, delivery and breastfeeding with the risk increasing with the duration of breastfeeding.

However, it can be reduced to less than five percent chance through a combination of prevention measures, including antiretroviral therapy for the expectant mother and her new-born, hygienic delivery conditions and safe infant feeding.

Mr Macharia hailed the Beyond Zero Campaign initiative by the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta which focuses on HIV/AIDS control and promotion of maternal,

new-born and child health.

Macharia said the country has witnessed an increase of skilled birth attendance from 44 perecent to 66 percent in the first six months of the introduction of free maternity programme in public hospitals.

He urged mothers to seek medical advice during and after pregnancies even as he promised government’s support to ensure counties improve quality healthcare.

Water company to end supply hiccups by 2016

The Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) plans to connect 100,000 new customers.

The company says it plans to get rid of illegal connections and end supply interruptions in the next two years.

To this end, it proposes new tariffs in groups (known as ‘bands’) of 6, 7, 60 and over 60 cubic metres.

Each cubic metre taken will cost Sh37, Sh56 and Sh90 in each of

the respective tariff groups. One cubic metre is equivalent to 1,000 litres.

“For low income groups, we are trying to maintain the charge at Sh200 per six cubic metres. We want to use a rate that can sustain a homestead,” said NCWSC Managing Director, Stephen Gichuki.

The current tariffs are grouped in bands of 0 to 10, 11 to 30, 31

to 60 and more than 60 cubic metres. The bands are billed at the rate of Sh18.71, Sh28.07, Sh42.89 and Sh53.80 per cubic metre respectively.

Customers in the lowest band (0 to 10 cubic metres) pay a flat fee of Sh187 irrespective of the amount of water taken per month.

About 33 per cent (or 82,500) of consumers fall in the category.

The company says the new tariffs

are necessary to improve service delivery through investments that are expected to achieve uninterrupted supply by 2016.

The firm says cost of electricity, water treatment chemicals, pipes, fuels, lubricants, sewers and fittings have gone up, making the review necessary to cover the additional expenses.

A study by the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) says half of potential customers are lost every day.

Alexa, an online business tool, has come up with a solution to the problem. The platform allows businesses with websites to drive customer traffic towards their home-page. Using a software that calculates how and why people visit websites, Alexa looks for clients on the web.

By logging in to Alexa.com, anyone can get a 30-day free trial of the software before paying a fee of between Sh870 and Sh70,000 a month depending on the service package of choice.

“Alexa’s international reach means that whether you compete locally, or on a global scale, we can confidently address all traffic metrics for your region,” says a statement from the group. “Data, by itself, rarely offers enough meaning. To become valuable information, it has to be presented in context.”

East Africa’s largest shopping mall to open on Thika highway The Garden City Shopping Mall, which was once set to become East Africa’s largest retail outlet, is months away from grand opening, London developer, Actis, has said.

The complex is set to be one of the latest real estate development projects along the new Nairobi-Thika superhighway. It will provide Kenyans with 500 homes and rental space for local business owners. The move is aimed at creating revenue and job opportunities.

Gates offers Sh43.8m for Africa farmers

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will give $500,000 (Sh43.8 million) to researchers from sub-Sahara Africa to develop ways of helping small holder farmers.

The Foundation has asked Master of Science Degree (MSc) and PhD scientists to submit proposals for research projects in agriculture that can sustain production of staple crops grown in the region.

Up to 3.7 million Kenyans need lifesaving assistance that can be found in farm produce, says the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Out of the 12.4 million people affected by drought in the Horn of Africa, Kenya has a third of people at risk.

The grant provides researchers with capacity to save lives and create long-term solutions to food problems.

“Our job is to get results,” says Jeff Raikes, the Foundations interim CEO. “We know our results depends on the quality of our partners.”

Kenya seeks new tea markets The Government of Kenya plans to send a delegation to explore Kazakhstan’s market and tune up direct contacts with the country’s business circles, leading to direct exportation of tea to the country.

This was confirmed by the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and

International Trade of Kenya Amina Mohamed while having talks with Kazakh Ambassador to Egypt Berik Aryn in Nairobi.

Kenya and Kazakhstan have a great potential to increase bilateral sales, which stood at Sh6.2billion in 2013 through tea trade. Should

an agreement be reached, the trade could help relieve the damage that has been caused to the economy by a reduction in the number of foreign tourists visiting the country on security grounds.

Locally, silk farming is practiced in Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley, Central, Eastern

Coast and Nairobi Provinces.

More than 100 farmers’ groups are now producing the raw silk, which in just a few weeks earns six to 10 times the price of imitation silk made from oil-based polyester. These local groups, consisting of about 30 farmers each, produce silk worth at least Sh1.4 million a year in profits.

The man who makes Ongata Rongai dance DJ Kace (Maxwell Kimutai) started experimenting with the decks while in high school. Infact, He had to juggle his high school final year studies with DJ classes at Kamata Music School.

His parents were, of course, not for the idea and he had to find his own ways of paying for the Dejaying classes. He denied himself luxuries like lunch and saved enough to get through with the training. After graduating

from high-school in 2012, with great support from his three siblings and driven by his passion for the art, he went into the field full-throttle.

At the time, he met Big Kev of True Blaq Entertainment who was impressed by his drive and absorbed him into the outfit.

Kace worked under the True Blaq banner for a while before leaving to become a resident DJ at Club Platinum in Ongata Rongai.

To widen his portfolio, he recently underwent radio production training at Homeboyz Studios.

The 21-year-old is now greatly sought-after because of his skill and versatility.

“I have played at Smirnoff Night Live and Kuvukakuvuka campaign hosted by IEBC to encourage Kenyans to vote during last year’s elections,” he said Kace describes himself as a bit of a geek because he is into science,

Tattoos as marks of artistic freedom Tattoo enthusiasts refer to them as skin art. Some enthusiasts see the marks as a way of using the body to show artistic freedom of something important or event in their life. Tattoos date back to 5,000 years ago and are believed to have originated from Polynesia. The symbolism and impact of tattoos vary by regions or cultures.

Tattoos can be permanent or temporary depending on individual needs. It is a form of body modification made by inserting enduring ink to the dermis layer of the skin that changes the pigment. They

are done by professionals but may lead to depression if not done properly. At some point, tattoos were not socially acceptable, meaning people would frown at a tattoo.

There are still places where tattoos are frowned upon but it is not as widespread as it was a few years ago. Tattoo parlours have sprung up and are everywhere these days.

For a certain amount of money, one can get one at places and organs of choice.

There are different types of inks that are used for tattoos.

The ink mostly consists of pigments and are available in

various colours. The glow in the dark inks have been used to tattoo as the ink absorbs and retains light which glows against a dark place. Critics say the ink can cause skin cancer. White ink if used on pale skin is barely visible and is a surprise to people who see it. Though the ink has a tendency to turn yellow, people are paying through the nose to get into the latest fad.

Line of Control, stainless steel kitchen utensil installation Subodh Gupta is an Indian contemporary artist who works with a variety of mediums.

These include sculptures, paintings, photography and video. His installation, Line of Control, symbolises the conflict between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir border and the possibility of nuclear conflict between the rival countries. The sculptures at the Line of Control installation are shaped like a giant mushroom cloud with a base symbolising the troubled borders.

He uses kitchen utensils such as steel plates, food tiffins, milk pails, cooking pots, pans, spoons and sieves to create his installations.

Fried or boiled, fish is fine food As food, fish is quite a versatile dish. It can be prepared by boiling, frying and baking and can be eaten with anything from ugali to chips or even on its own.

It doesn’t take a lot of time to prepare fish and it is one of the easiest dishes to cook.

If you opt to deep-fry it all you need to do is give it thorough cleaning and drop it into hot oil until it has a golden-brown colour

on both sides.

If you decide to go stew, then ingredients like tomatoes, coriander, crushed ginger and garlic, fresh lemon juice, pepper (optional) and spices comes into play. First, the crushed garlic, ginger and fresh lemon juice are mixed. The fish is then slit across two or three times depending on its size and the mixture of spices is inserted into the open slits then deep fried on both

sides till brown.

Then in a cooking pot, onions are cooked in a little cooking oil until brown, tomatoes, coriander are added. Salt comes in last. It will form a thick paste, then add the spices, and a little water to the pot and stir. Bring to boil then put the whole fish into the pot then let it cook for ten minutes on both sides.

Ensure it does not crumble.

DELICIOUS: A serving of stewed fish. The dish goes down well with virtually any starch—Ugali and rice topping the list.

Immobile is the man for Azzuri Mario Balotelli may be famous for asking “why always me?” but there is the increasing possibility that it won’t always be him for Cesare Prandelli’s Italy.

The Milan striker is renowned in England for his brittle temperament on and off the field but there is a growing lobby for SuperMario to be dropped for the Azzurri’s opener against England in favour of Ciro Immobile.

Immobile is still making his way in the game, having waited for his opportunity at Juventus while being farmed out on loan and co-ownership agreements to other clubs further down the Italian food chain.

It is at the latest of those, Torino, where he made a splash this season, netting 22 goals as he was crowned capocannoniere – the leading scorer in Serie A. But as with the previous two

winners of that title, Immobile too has been sold abroad in a trend that is starting to cause concern on the peninsula.

Global payments technology company, Visa, will sponsor Kenyan Polycarp Otieno to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil that is due to start on Thursday.

Polycarp was announced the winner of a Visa-run nationwide competition after beating thousands of Kenyans to the coveted all-expenses paid trip in a drive which raised awareness of the tournament.

“Football has the unique power to inspire people everywhere and Visa couldn’t have been more excited to be a sponsor,” said Jabu Basopo, Area Country Manager, Sub-Sahara Africa after presenting Polycarp with the winner’s ticket. “Africans are passionate about football and we will be rallying behind the five African nations to do well at the football gala,” he said.

Polycarp will join other winners from sub-Sahara Africa who will witness the greatest soccer showpiece.

“I am really grateful for the opportunity. I am an ardent football fan and I feel privileged to have won the opportunity to be in Brazil,” said the Mombasa-based IT specialist.

Polycarp and other winners from Africa will travel to Brazil in early July.

Visa’s relationship with Fifa World Cup started six years ago and is one of the world football governing body’s only six global partners.

Hotelier Jaideep Singh Vohra says he is looking forward to making the Kenya Motor Sports Federation a better federation after he was elected unopposed as chairman.

He was given the mandate during the KMSF Annual General Meeting of the Motor Sports where all the stakeholders from the 11 affiliateswere present.

“My priority is to keep our sponsors and competitors happy by making sure motorsports disciplines are properly, fairly and professional managed,” he said.

“I will strive to revamp various disciplines of motorsports in Kenya, over and above steering them to desirable

heights.”

Roy Mackenzie, who had held the post for nearly sixteen months since he was appointed in February last year, has retired.

The stakeholders are members of the KMSF board of directors by virtue of being heads of the respective clubs. Therefore he (Mackenzie) still remains as one of the 11 directors of the federation by virtue of his position as the chairman of the Mombasa Motor Club “Together we can make KSMF a much better place to be,” said Vohra, who is also a director of the East African Safari Rally Ltd. He is also is a stakeholder in Kenya’s Hotel Industry.
