15 more killed in Mpeketoni TUESday, june 17, 2014

From Page 1 At least 15 more people were killed in fresh attacks last night at Poromoko village near Mpeketoni, in Lamu County, security officials have confirmed.

Interior cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku said the attackers destroyed telecommunication equipment to

ensure residents could not raise alarm before they carried out the massacre.

He described the attackers as sophisticated and declared war in them.

“This is an elaborate war,” Mr Lenku told angry residents, who sought for immediate action from him at Lake

Manyatta this morning.

Several houses were burned down at Mapenya village and police are yet to establish whether this was a follow-up to an earlier attack.

Al-Shabaab terror group has since claimed through their radio station, Andalus, that they are responsible for the Sunday night attack in

No arrest has been made following the killings.

Security officers are combing the area amid claims that gunmen had been spotted at Rumshi village, about 20 kilometres from Mpeketoni town.

Villagers claimed they alerted police last night after spotting the attackers as they torched houses.

Mr Lenku repeated his claims yesterday that the killings were politically instigated. He said the government has reliable intelligence that similar attacks might occur in other parts of the country.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has since distanced himself from claims that there were plans to overthrow the government.

Lenku said more officers have been deployed to Lamu and threatened

to sack government officials over the killings that started on Sunday night.

Mr Lenku is leading security operation in the region alongside Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, Principal Secretary Mutea Iringo and Kimaiyo’s two deputies.

Masked gunmen stormed Mpeketoni village on Sunday night and indiscriminately shot at residents.

Lucky witnesses recounted how the attackers hijacked two 14-seater matatus which they drove around as they carried out the mass murder.

The attackers, who caught the villagers unawares, also burnt down property, including two buildings banks.

Al-Shabaab claimed the attack was in retaliation to the killing of Muslim clerics in Mombasa.

Transgender woman sues Washington hotel over slur A transgender customer has filed a complaint against a restaurant in Adams Morgan, Washington DC, after it allegedly used a homophobic slur on a payment receipt.

The Washington Blade has reported that Amira Gray and her eight friends dined at Bistro 18 last August and received poor service by the restaurant staff.

When Gray received a check from the female bartender, she saw the slur and brought it to the manager’s attention.

The manager says the server was sacked immediately and Gray given full refund.

With the restaurant taking necessary precautions, other LGBT

support groups don’t see the need for Gray, along with activist group Lambda Legal, to file court actions.

Reports also showed that the bistro never had any issues in the past with racial slurs.

Gray believes the matter wasn’t handled as smoothly as the restaurant claims.

“As a transgender woman, I was extremely hurt, embarrassed and upset,” she said. “I felt the slur was meant as a slap in the face because of my gender identity and expression, my perceived sexual orientation, my personal appearance, and my association with my friends who are or may have been perceived as being lesbian or gay.”

SA wants fist-pumping Mandela ad pulled out The South African consulate in Hong Kong has told a travel company to immediately pull a front-page advertisement featuring an image of a fist-pumping Nelson Mandela above the word “freedom”.

The three-column advertisement by the online travel agency Zuji shows Mandela in jubilant mood, echoing his historic release from 27 years of apartheid jail in 1990, on the front page of the English-language South China Morning Post.

As reported by the AFP, the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate is sandwiched between images of multiple airplanes and hotels with the word “freedom” emblazoned underneath to advertise Zuji’s global travel network.

But South African representatives in Hong Kong said the use of the stylised image -which also echoes the Barack Obama “Hope” poster -- was an infringement of copyright held by the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

“We have seen the advertisement and have been in touch with the company involved, because Nelson Mandela’s image is never to be used for commercial use,” political consul for the South African

consulate, Bryonie Guthrie, told AFP. “In South Africa, even his own charities are discouraged from ever using his image for commercial use,” she said, adding the advertisement was “quite strange”.

Zuji was not immediately able to comment when contacted by AFP. Guthrie later added that the company had agreed to pull the ad, and no further action would be taken. But it was unclear whether Tuesday’s image in the newspaper was a one-off or part of a sustained campaign.

Lenku faced a hostile reception from residents who jeered at him as he landed at the school.

The hostility stems from anger instigated by fresh attacks that left another 15 people killed earlier today.

It took the intervention of Lamu West MP Julius Ndegwa to calm the residents before ole Lenku made a brief statement.

Government pays Sh6b to get land for new railway The government has already paid Sh6.6 billion of the Sh10 billion required to acquire land for the construction of the first phase of the Standard Gauge Railway.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau said the money was sourced from proceeds of the Railway Development Fund

(RDF), which the government introduced two years ago.

“We have paid about Sh6.6 billion of the Sh10 billion we need for land acquisition.

We are also using the money for the commuter rail-RDF continues through the life of the project,” he said.

The compulsory acquisition of land for the first phase of the

railway line from Mombasa to Nairobi is expected to cost Sh10 billion.

It is estimated that 11, 000 acres will be compulsorily acquired from individuals and government agencies along the 609-kilometre stretch.

Eight counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita-Taveta, Makueni, Kajiado, Machakos

and Nairobi will all be affected by the project.

Mr Kamau, speaking at the project’s symposium convened to highlight the business opportunities arising from the implementation, also vowed to deliver the region’s biggest infrastructure project.

“The project will be delivered in 35 months and two weeks’

time and I am instructed to complete it by June 1, 2017,” he said.

Main contractors, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) , has entered into an agreement with the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) to set aside 40 per cent of the civil and related works for Kenyan firms.

Study says delinquent behaviour leads to violent deaths Lawlessness, misconduct or misbehavior among the youth is a sign of violent death in future, new study claims. A new report by psychiatrists warns that untreated psychiatric problems is increasing leading to violent deaths of many delinquents.

“The findings are shocking,” lead author Linda, who is also a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine said.

“Early violent death is a health disparity,” she added saying youth who get detained are disproportionately poor. “We must address early violent death the same as any other health disparity.”

According to the research whose finding were published yesterday in the journal Pediatrics, females are among the most vulnerable with nearly five times the risk in general populations.

This is the first large-scale study to look at death rates in delinquency.

In addition, violent death up to age 34 was predicted by three risk factors in adolescence: alcohol use disorder, selling drugs, and gang involvement, according to the study.The study used newly available data from the Northwestern Juvenile Project, a longitudinal study of 1,829 youth (1,172 males and 657 females, ages 10 to 18 years at baseline. They were detained at the Cook County Juvenile Centre in Chicago between 1995 and 1998 and the researchers interviewed participants and then followed them up using official death records up to 16 years later. Of the original participants, 111 died, 75 (68 per cent) murdered with 68 (91 per cent) of them shot.

CBA clients to run fixed accounts using mobile One-and-a-half years after launching the MShwari mobile banking service, Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) and Safaricom have added a fixed deposit feature.

The new Lock Savings Account is the first of its kind in the mobile money landscape that will allow Kenyans opportunity to save for specific purposes.

The move is also meant to entrench a savings culture in a country where the savings ration is below 20 per cent of the GDP, the lowest in the region.

To access the feature, customers will be required to dial *234*6 and follow instructions.

The service allows customers to save a minimum of Sh500 for a maximum of six months at interest rates of up to 6 per cent annually.

Speaking on the launch, Jeremy Ngunze, CBA Kenya’s Chief Executive Officer said: “We introduced this new feature on the strength of recurrent customer feedback which suggested the need for a facility which would inherently instill in them the discipline required to make medium term savings towards a specific goal.”

Old Nairobi county estates to give way to 2.5m new houses The Nairobi County government plans major residential projects in parts of the capital city to accommodate an ever-rising number of residents.

The projects will affect Eastlands, Uthiru, Kabete, Runda, Ruai, Lang’ata and Donholm. The plan is to accommodate a larger population that is set to rise by more than 71 per cent.

As part of the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan, commonly referred to as ‘Niuplan’, City Hall proposes to create more than a dozen commercial centres in a bid to drive activity from the Central Business District.

Nairobi has a population of more than 3.5 million residents and the number is expected to reach 5 million in the next decade. City Hall believes the number cannot be supported by the existing housing facilities.

“If Nairobi County needs to accommodate more than 5 million people, the existing regulation in development regulations must be revised to change plot ratio to

Inefficiency has been associated with the failure by more than 60 per cent of businesses in Kenya, a report by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics says.

Wave, a free online accounting platform, has been created to help small businesses escape the eventuality. The software, which works on Android and Apple phones is made for those running businesses with nine employees or less.

It targets freelancers, contractors, entrepreneurs, and owners of small companies and can be found on waveapps.com for free.

“We make software and tools for small businesses,” says Aaron Romeo, one of Wave’s founders. “That includes invoicing, accounting, payroll, payments and personal finance software,” says the group.

Wave has customers in more than 200 countries and can be reached from any part of the world with access to the Internet.

“It’s meant for medium-sized businesses with dozens and sometimes hundreds of employees.

But there’s a world of difference between the needs of a five-person company and a 55-person company.

Smuggling threatens macadamia industry Kenya is far from meeting its full export potential for macadamia nuts, says a report

by Ten Senses Africa (TSA), an organisation that deals in export initiatives across the world.

Kenya has an estimated 100,000 macadamia farmers with close to 900,000 trees, making it the fifth largest exporter in the world.

However, in the past decade most farmers have neglected their trees due to unstable prices, greedy brokers and uncertain market access.

TSA reports that crooked traders have been exporting immature nuts since 2005, giving Kenyan macadamia a poor reputation in the international market.

The government banned

exportation of raw macadamia in 2009, but the smuggling continues.

“This is unnecessary since Kenyan macadamia, when properly cultivated and processed, are superior to those grown by its main competitors,” says a statement from TSA. Kenya’s rivals in the macadamia export industry are Australia,

Guatemala and South Africa.

Deputy Senate speaker Kembi Gitura and Muranga Senator said the smuggling of the immature nuts could undo the progress achieved in the past four years following the ban.

“The return of middlemen will cause loss of jobs and lower quality of the nuts, and kill the industry,” said Gitura in an earlier statement.

Price of seeds to fall The prices of seed are expected to fall this month after the Treasury Secretary, Henry Rotich removed duty on imported inputs for seed production.

The kebab speciality Kebabs are a Middle Eastern dish, mostly found in Turkey. They are a common in Kenya as well, especially at the Coast.

They are basically pieces of meat or vegetables, grilled or depp fried on a skewer.

The most common meat for kebab is mutton, but beef, goat, chicken, pork or fish can be used depending on a person’s preference .

Kebabs are quick and easy to make and just as easy to eat. They are a perfect snack to have for breakfast or as appetizers at dinner parties. They are made with minced meat and mild spices, including curry powder, garlic, pepper, ginger, salt, onions, coriander, cinnamon and, of course, the preferred meat.

A Japanese study described the smell of surstromming as being one of the most rancid odours in the world.

Sustromming has been a staple for Swedes since the 16th century when salt for preserving fish was scarce and expensive.

The fish used in this dish is the Baltic herring which is known as stromming in Swedish. The fish are caught in April and May when they are just about to deposit their eggs. To prepare the dish, the fish is put in water, which has been saturated with salt for about 20 hours to draw the blood out. Afterwards, it is removed and the head is chopped off, deboned and put into a weaker salt solution in barrels for a few months.

Canning of the fish is done in July before it is distributed to wholesalers.

The fermentation process

continues in the can, causing it to bulge during shipping.

Some airlines have banned the tinned fish on their flights, stating that the pressurised containers are a risk.

Bacteria in the can is responsible for the continued, ‘ripening’ of the fish. These bacteria produce carbon dioxide and a few other compounds, which explains the putrid smell.

The fermented fish is often eaten with a hard, thin, crisp Swedish bread known as tunnbrod or can be eaten as is.

A sandwich is usually made with tunnbrod, sustromming, boiled potatoes and diced onions.

The sandwich is served with beers, svagdricka, a Swedish drink with low alcohol content, water or milk.

Not many people like sustromming and it is generally considered to be an acquired taste. German author, Wolfgang Fassbender once wrote, “The biggest challenge when eating surströmming is to vomit only after the first bite, STINKY: Surströmming, fermented fish that is a Swedish delicacy. as opposed to before.’’

Sport Yego lands another win in Finland

World championship javelin finalist Julius Yego’s great week continued as he improved on his season’s best to 84.44m in an elite competition at Lahti, Finland, on Sunday.

The 25 year-old last week made a season best 84.17 throw at the Diamond League in Oslo for silver. The achievement was a centimetre behind the winner and world champion Tero Pitkamaki. The Finnish former world champion (2007) who also had his best throw of 85.48 was the winner on Sunday again.

He insists that his target is medal bracket as the Commonwealth Games inch closer.

It will Yego’s debut at the Commonwealth where he hopes to lift a medal before going to Morocco in August to defend his African title.

“I hope to continue well towards the commonwealth and Africa champs,” says Yego.

“My body is responding well one thing I am really happy about, the target at the commonwealth games remains high,” he says.

Arsenal star set for Man U move in the summer Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a deal ‘in principle’ to join Manchester United in the summer.

United must now agree a fee with Arsenal after the World Cup. Central defender Vermaelen has a year left on his Arsenal contract and has found himself pushed out of manager Arsene Wenger’s firstchoice by Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
