Most fresh fruits and vegetables sold in Nairobi are unsafe for human consumption, reports indicate.

Results of a joint research by the University of Nairobi and Strathmore University released two weeks ago have established that most fruits and vegetables sold in the city contain chemical residues at levels not regarded as safe by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The lethal substances find their way to the consumers due to poor production and handling practices which expose them to contamination with disease-causing viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Veterinary surgeon Kenneth

Wameyo says majority of farmers use contaminated water to irrigate plants as a way of keeping them fresh and appealing to consumers.

“It is difficult to differentiate between vegetables that have been fertilised using contaminated water and clean but if you smell vegetables grown in contaminated water, they have a slightly pungent smell which you can only smell from a distance,” he said.

X News has also established that some farmers in Nairobi use sewage instead of the recommended fertiliser to grow the vegetables.

At Sinai, in Embakasi, Nairobi, farmers go an extra mile to secure human dung which they claim works magic in the cultivation of

vegetables.

“They give us containers and we get Sh20 for each kilogramme delivered,” says Felistus Mukami, a resident who supplies farmers with human waste.

Since majority of houses do not have toilets, residents go to Felistus to relieve themselves at a Sh10 charge. “It is double earning and you cannot resist it,” he said.

Farmers tell residents they need the waste to extract a certain chemical that can only be found in human faeces and not animal waste.

“There are is no scientific data that back the claims,” says Dr Wameyo.

“Remember that human waste is excreted from the body because it is no longer useful so by eating

the vegetables contaminated with human wastes, it will be recycling it.”

“For urine, they give us a container, which if you fill they pay Sh1,000,” says Mukami. “If you fill one with faeces, you are paid sh500. That is good money here in the low income slums.”

The farmers claim the chemical keep plants fresher for longer compared with other products that are grown in cow dung.

“Have you ever seen how big and healthy vegetables in the supermarket look? Where do you think they come from?” poses Eric Mutua, a farmer in Embakasi.

He says human dung makes vegetables look bigger and healthier.

Dr Augustine Ng’ang’a of Kenyatta National Hospital, however, warns the trend poses serious health risks to consumers.

“Human waste is a cultural medium for bacteria, especially the harmful ones, and it will definitely contaminate vegetables,” he says.

“The vegetable can cause an acute poisoning when eaten,” he warned.

HConsumer protection is a way of effectively preventing transmission of diseases through vegetables.

Inspections should be carried out to ensure vegetables being sold in markets and supermarkets meet required health standards and are grown in hygienic conditions.

Cleanliness is a standard and major requirement for every farmer.

Delta’s giraffe goof in US World Cup win celebration

To congratulate US for their 2-1 victory in the World Cup, Delta, a main US airline, tweeted the number of goals each team scored superimposed on a picture of the Statue of Liberty for the US. For Ghana, however, they chose the image of a giraffe.

Presumably, the giraffe was the landmark icon to represent Ghana, the same way the Statue of Liberty is widely known to represent US. The only fact they overlooked is that there are no giraffes in Ghana.

So, Delta’s tweet was perceived by many as part of the stereotypical view that most people in the West regard Africa as a country.

A Twitter user tracked down the image Delta had used as a stock photo from Masai Mara National Park, in Kenya.

Delta later deleted the tweet and apologised. “We’re sorry for our choice of photo in our previous tweet. Best of luck to all teams.”

The apology, however, came too late to stop a tirade of online criticism.

A Twitter user in Abuja, Nigeria said: “If you’re gonna talk about something at least take 10 seconds to study it a little. @ Delta Africa is not a big bush full of wild animals”.

A 2010 study by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) found that there are no giraffes in Ghana.

The animals remain in the wild in other parts of Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and Cameroon. They have also been introduced in Rwanda and Swaziland.

expert: Lenku doesn’t inspire confidence

A security analyst has proposed the appointment of person who commands trust from both security officers and civilians to head the Interior Ministry as one way of improving the deteriorating security situation in the country.

In a talk on Citizen TV’s live Breakfast Interview, retired army officer Colonel Benjamin Muema said there is need for a cabinet secretary who enjoys support and confidence from civilians and the disciplined forces.

“We need someone who can give us confidence. He must instil confidence in you and me so as to motivate us to help him deliver,” Muema said.

While Kenyans record the highest number of bank-related complaints, local lenders have managed to secure a top spot on a list of Africa’s best banks. A new survey from research group, Ernst & Young has revealed that the country is ranked the second most confident banking market after Nigeria and ahead of South Africa.

The survey indicates that Africans’ confidence level in the banking sector has increased most in Nigeria where 69 per cent of customers were confident of their industry, followed

by Kenya at 66 per cent and South Africa at 33 per cent.

The survey showed that more than half of Kenyans had experienced at least one problem with their bank, including being charged fees that had not been explained to them or not being able to access their funds. Kenyan banks have managed to maintain a hold on their customers using different methods, including incorporating their platforms with mobile money services, as well as use of agency banking.

“Kenyan banks need to improve their efficiency in problem solving with more than half of customers having had a problem in the 12 months,” the report says.

Varsity courses review still on, says Board Students who qualified to join various public universities and diploma colleges have been given the last chance to review their course by end of June.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS) board has announced that the second revision of course for students will be done by the end of this month.

Those who missed out on the first selection will be eligible for the revision and the board has asked them to be on the look-out when the dates are announced soon.

“All of them will have a second chance to revise their courses at end of the month and we are going to specify the dates in due course,” KUCCPS acting chief executive John Muraguri said.

“We ask all the qualified students to be on the lookout since we want to be fair to all so that none of them feels left out,’’ he added.

Diploma students who for many

years have only been accepted by their local colleges will now be accepted to any college they qualify for. “The board also approved that we can start placement of diploma students from 2011 and during the second revision, we shall also be doing this for all the college students,” said Mr Muraguri.

“Candidates will only be placed on the program of their second choice if they fail to qualify for the first option and also if there are no vacancies in all the three institutions chosen under the first option,’’ said Muraguri. For degree programs, candidates will choose up to eight courses of their choice while those of diploma will choose six courses.

KUCCPS was created under the University Act and replaced Joint Admission Board (JAB) and has taken the functions of JAB that include revision of courses and provision of entry requirements into higher learning institutions.

Witnesses say the suicide bomber in a tricycle taxi detonated the explosives as people watched Brazil’s

“The military and police trucks that brought them in have made four return trips so far ferrying them in.

Every single truck was full of the injured. And all of them

are young men or children,” the hospital worker said.

The worker said that the injuries suffered by people caught up in the blast were “horrific” and that troops were prioritising bringing in the injured for treatment,

before returning to the scene of the blast to collect bodies.

Damaturu resident Mohammed Kurkure Yobe told the BBC that the venue where the attack took place is very popular and often crowded.

Al-Shabaab not to blame, says Uhuru

The Mpeketoni attacks that left more than 60 people killed were not perpetrated by the Al-Shabaab terror group, President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Tuesday.

He said the two attacks were orchestrated by political networks.

“The attack in Lamu was well-planned, orchestrated, and politically motivated ethnic violence against a Kenyan community, with the intention of profiling and evicting them for political reasons,” he said in a televised speech. “This therefore, was not an al-Shabaab terrorist attack.” Although the al-Qaeda-linked Somali militancy claimed responsibility for the raid, President Kenyatta said “political networks” are to blame.

“We have observed frenzied political rhetoric laced with ethnic profiling of some of Kenya’s communities and obvious acts of incitement to lawlessness and possible violence. Evidence indicates that local political networks were involved in the planning and execution of the heinous attacks,” he said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Lenku had earlier warned unnamed politicians for crossing “the red line” and inciting violence.

Sh5.9b expansion of city roads starts in July The construction of more lanes on major city roads to ease traffic flow will start this month.

This is after the European Union announced that it will disburse a total of Sh3.4 billion in grants for the Sh5.9 billion project. The National Treasury will provide the remaining Sh1.5billion. Five main roads will be converted to dual carriageways, cyclist paths built on two others, and lanes in 61 junctions will be constructed.

General Waruinge Road will be extended by about two kilometres to link Eastleigh to the Thika Super Highway.

Enterprise Road will also be extended by a similar distance.

The 1.3-kilometre stretch of Lusaka Road between Enterprise Road and Mombasa Road will be converted to a dual carriageway, same Likoni Road.

Ring Road Parklands, a stretch of 5.7Km, and Quarry Road in Kariakor (2.8km will also be

converted to dual carriages.

The project also includes construction of five kilometres of footpaths and cycleways on Lusaka, Rabai and Mumias South roads. EU ambassador to Kenya Lodewijk Briet said business in Nairobi is suffering due to the heavy traffic that characterise morning and evening rush hours. He added that the project will not only ease commuting, but also improve safety of pedestrians

and cyclists who will now have a 21km stretch of foot and cycling paths to use.

Lamu cops fired over Mpeketoni Senior police officers in Lamu County where gunmen attacked a village and killed more than 60 people have been suspended and will be charged for abdicating duty.

President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday said the officers failed to prevent the attacks even after getting intelligence briefs about it.

Reports say intelligence on the attack was given to the Mpeketoni security officers but they did not act on it. All concerned officers have been suspended and will be charged immediately in a court of law.

The President warned any other officers to be found to have failed to expect a similar fate.

Woman shot and robbed of Sh0.25m A woman was Tuesday night shot and seriously wounded before being robbed of Sh270,000 in Githurai.

Police say the woman has been running an Mpesa shop in the area and was headed for home after the closure of the day’s activities when she was confronted by gunmen.

The gang grabbed the cash before shooting her in the stomach. She was rushed to KNH where she is admitted in a stable condition and no arrest has been made so far.

Brahma Kumaris to launch ‘Write to God Monument’ June 21, 2014 The Brahma Kumaris in Nairobi will be officially launching their ‘Write to God’ monument on June 21st, 2014. Brahma Kumaris is an international non-governmental organisation with a presence in over 100 countries across the world.

The ‘Write to God’ initiative started prior to the 2012 elections as part of a peace-promoting project and as a way to try and avoid a repeat of the 2007/2008 post-election chaos.

“I saw the last election,” recalls Sister Vedanti, Regional Director for Brahma Kumaris, Africa. “In October 2012, I wanted to do something for peace. I thought, ‘how do we touch the hearts of people?’”

With that, the ‘Write to God’ initiative was formed. By

asking the public to write letters to God, Brahma Kumaris believed that the move would promote peace, tolerance and understanding in a time when tensions were running high.

The group called on people from all walks of life, all religions and all backgrounds to take part in their project.

The University is now inviting anyone who is interested to join them in unveiling their monument in Westlands, Nairobi, a depository where anyone can post their letter to God. Brahma Kumaris has invited the general public and dignitaries to take part in the event, which will have attendees lighting candles and writing their personal letters to God. “Everyone who comes is our chief guest,” Sister Vedanti has said. “Everyone does it

together.”

When the project was first launched, the group used collection boxes in supermarkets across the country (in 44 of the 47 Counties). At the time, Brahma Kumaris was able to collect 100,000 letters.

“We got letters through Facebook, Twitter, e-mails, websites and traditionally written by hand,” recalls Sister Dipti from the Write to God Initiative.

“We started to write to the media and the government.

We reached out to churches, schools, hospitals and industries,” says Sister Vedanti.

The Write to God Initiative, though started in Nairobi, has spread worldwide, with countries embracing the peace-giving project.

“This is a spiritual-neutral institution,” says Sister Ve-

danti, who mentions that the organisation has events every week with special guest speakers from any religion.

“People come here for courses on positive thinking, stress relieving, spiritual uplifting, and meditation. Anybody can attend. Any class, any religion, any age. It is open to all. This is like a University but it is free.”

Funded by voluntary members and well-wishers, Brahma Kumaris hopes to reach millions of people across the world, spreading the message of peace, compassion and harmony.

New home for internet centre The Kenya Internet Exchange Point (KIXP) has successfully relocated to the East Africa Data Centre in Nairobi as part of a drive to raise local internet traffic.

This is expected to lower the cost of connectivity and improve performance in order to meet international standards.

KIXP was previously hosted at Bruce House, Nairobi. It is an important facility to the national internet community since it ensures the best possible practices in service delivery to its members.

The presence of an effective KIXP encouraged Google to place a cache in both Kenya and Nigeria in 2011, which

has significantly increased the amount of locally distributed content (notably YouTube videos) at faster speeds.

Fiona Asonga, CEO of the Telecommunications Service Providers Association of Kenya (TESPOK), has said KIXP plays a key role in satisfying the growing demand for internet services in Kenya.

Street luge is an extreme sport that’s popular with many skateboarders and outdoor sports enthusiasts.

It combines the best of skateboarding, sledding and sheer bravado to form one of the most thrilling and dangerous sports out there.

Riders use a wheeled sled to speed down paved surfaces, often reaching speeds of 96 Kph or more.

The sleds are similar to those seen in the winter sport, but they have wheels instead of runners. As you ride, your body rests mere centimeters above the ground, and now that’s the epicenter of danger; a slight entry into a pothole means collision with the ground that can result to death.

Coca Cola envoy Lloyd Kim back in Kenya Kenya’s 2014 Copa Coca-Cola ambassador Lloyd Kim returned to the country Tuesday morning after participating in a training camp in Brazil. The 14-year-old arrived in Kenya alongside his East African colleagues from Zanzibar, Tanzania and Uganda after a oneweek a session that involved more than 120 players from more than 24 countries.

“This was, by far, the best thing

that has happened in my life and career,” said Kim who won a medal after his team finished third. “I am not the same player any more. The skills, technical ability and tactical awareness that I was imparted with during that period are things that will reign in my game from now onwards,” he said.

In Brazile, the JMJ Academy player met Brazil soccer legend and 1994 World Cup winner Bebeto as they

watched the live proceedings of the opening ceremony and the match between Croatia and Brazil which the hosts won 3-1.

“I am a big fan of Neymar and it was unbelievable how close he was to me during that match with Croatia. It was an amazing experience seeing him do what he does on the pitch,” he said.

“We are glad he’s back, we missed him but at the same time prayed

he does well in Brazil which he did. We have a special feast for him back at home,” said Kim’s Grandmother Joyce Mugambi, who was among nearly 10 people at the airport to receive Kim. Kim’s next assignment will be to help motivate his JMJ Academy team who are participating in the annual tournament. Kim helped JMJ lift last year’s title captaining the team to victory.

Kenya’s Ismael Changawa is eyeing a historic debut at the prestigious Wimbledon Tennis Championship later this month.

Changawa, a top-seeded Kenyan tennis player, has seen his continental International Tennis Federations ranking improve to 60th after participation in Australia and France.

After the Australian Open, where he was knocked out at the qualifying tournament, the player hopes he can go a step further at the Belgium Open preceding Wimbledon.

“I need points in Belgium that will put me in a better place ahead of Wimbledon.

Wimbers is the ultimate dream for any tennis player,” he said.

Changawa is one of the talented young Tennis players from the continent who were chosen to attend the ITF Tennis Camp which was moved from South Africa to Morocco.

Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Majors), others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open.

Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass and it is played over two weeks from late June to early July.

Mats Hummels has revealed that he would entertain the possibility of a move to Manchester United “some day”, but does not expect such a move in the June-July transfer window.

Borussia Dortmund centre-back is one of Louis van Gaal’s top targets, with the incoming United coach keen for the 25-year-old German international to become the leader of his defence after the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

And Hummels, who scored and was injured during Die Nationalmannschaft’s 4-0 victory over Portugal in their opening World Cup game, says although a move is unlikely this summer, he is open to a future switch to the Premier League side.

“I never think about that or talk about it because it is something that isn’t important for me right now,” Hummels said. “Maybe it will be some day, but I don’t expect it to be like that this summer.”

Following their emphatic victory over Portugal, Hummels believes Germany have a good chance of going all the way this summer - but must keep their concentration levels up in the heat of Brazil.

“If we are concentrated and focused, both defensively and offensively, then we are a good team and that is the way we play,” Hummels said.

“The thing is to work as a team. If we work defensively as we should, then our attacking play is so good that we have a chance to beat every team.”

Kenya ready for Gor signs another Ugandan striker Grand Prix debut

National team head coach David Lung’aho is confident Kenya is ready to debut at the FIVB World Grand Prix tournament next month in Bulgaria.

Kenya is due to play their first Grand Prix on July 27 where they are pooled in group three alongside Algeria, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Czech Republic, Mexico, Bulgaria and Australia.

Kenya ranks top of the pooling at position 13th in the rankings followed by Algeria at position 14.

The host cities of the World Grand Prix have been confirmed with Tokyo, hosting Group One, Kozalin Group Two as Group Three Finals are set for Samokov, Bulgaria.

Kenya will play their matches in Samokov.

For the first time in the tournament history, the 2014 edition features 28 teams.

NEW FACE: Robert Ssentongo has joined Kenyan Premier League Champions Gor Mahia.

Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have acquired the services of Ugandan striker Robert Ssentongo.

The 28-year old, who spent half of last season at URA FC after leaving Ethiopian side St. George, arrived in Kenyan on Monday to pen down what is believed to be a two years deal.

Gor secretary General Chris Omondi said the Ugandan will be the latest acquisition for the club while remaining coy on the terms of the contract.

“He is all but a Gor Mahia

player. Our scouts have been monitoring him closely. We need to agree on a few things before we make it official,” said Omondi.

“With players like Rama Salim and Kevin Omondi set to leave the club, there is need to bring quality replacements,” he said.

Ssentongo’s arrival brings to five numbers of Ugandan players’ turning out for the club. They include, striker Danny Sserunkuma, midfielder Goddfrey Kizito, and defenders Geoffrey Walusimbi and Israel Emuge.

Origi’s World Cup debut impresses his father WEDNESday, JUNE 18, 2014

19-year-old Divock Origi, son to former Kenyan international Mike Okoth, made a decent World Cup debut for Belgium, as they took on Algeria in a Group H match on Tuesday evening.

Origi stepped onto the pitch as a 58th minute substitute for Romelu Lukaku and he made a couple of impressive runs in their 2-1 victory.

Speaking after the match, Okoth (Origi’s father) could not hide his pride, saying that years of hard work had finally paid off.

“I always knew that he (would) do great things, and I am happy to see him take on the

world at such an early age. I think he outdid himself in the match and I am certain he will keep doing well,” said Okoth.

Algeria opened the scoring on the 25th minute, through a penalty converted

by Sofiane Feghouli after being fouled by Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.

Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini, a second-half substitute, equalised with a looping header on the 70th minute.
