As cases of domestic murders and other home-based crimes rise, psychologists have warned against the dangers of remaining in abusive relationships.

The mainstream media have reported more than 10 cases of domestic murders in the past six months alone as the grim statistics continue worrying counselling psychologists.

Lucy Kiathe says

most young spouses, especially women, maintain hope that their partners will stop battering them, only to end up being killed.

“Men are the perpetrators in most cases. A potential domestic murderer likes fighting a lot.

This indicator is enough to signal impending danger,” Ms Kiathe, a counselling psychologist, says.

“Violent partners must be reported to authorities for action. The couple can also seek help from a person they trust, or a professional. Don’t wait for death,” she says.

The community must also report cases of abuse to authorities because those involved may not see it as big deal until it ends up in murder.

The psychologist says stress over finances is a major contributor to the rising string of domestic murders that have occurred across the country in recent past.

“Areas of work can be stressful.

Once one gets home they expect to relax and relieve pressure. If they do not find peace from spouses, they feel hopeless and depressed, in most cases resulting in spontaneous homicides,” she says.

The counsellor says instant homicides may be caused by temperamental behaviour and unfaithfulness by either partner. The couple should seek an exit route instead of terminating the lives of family members or theirs.

Last month, a Kenya Wildlife Service officer in Kilifi shot his

girlfriend before ending his life over differences involving extra-marital love wrangles.

The counsellor says perfectionists demand a lot from children in class work and behaviour. When they do not meet a set threshold, the young ones are punished, sometimes to extreme levels that may lead to death.

“Too many expectations from children in school performance or behaviour may cause parents to use too much force that may kill them when they do not meet these goals,” she says.

A fortnight ago, a mother in Nyamira County killed her seven-year-old son over maize he allegedly stole from a neighbour. The woman committed suicide three days later.

In the same week, a father beat up a 10 year-old step-son to death for allegedly stealing a banana and avocado from a neighbour.

Sammy Njayakio Wambugu, Secretary Kenya Psychological Association (KPsyA), says life’s frustrations coupled with tough economic strains can blur clarity of thinking.

Culprits may see homicide as the only solution.

“Frustrations make one lose rationality. Shallow thinking guided by an inward feeling that no one cares and there is no solution to their problem other than death drives one to this crime” he says.

In March, a police officer shot his

wife five times before shooting himself in South B, Nairobi, over Sh16, 000 he was demanding from his police colleague wife.

Wambugu says the entire household can be victims because they are viewed as a burden as the family means more responsibilities and more challenges.

But expectant mothers face a higher risk of being battered for being ‘nagging’ as it is their weakest moment physically and emotionally.

“If she is seen to be adding more problems through demands for attention and choice of things, as well as the fact that she is bringing in an extra burden, this may worsen an already complicated situation,” the official says.

Survivors of the incidents, especially children, remain traumatised.

“The loss of a loved one makes people angry and willing to revenge. Indeed, this breeds a cycle of violence.

Children who witness violence, are likely to perpetuate violence in their families as well when they grow,” Wambugu says.

Gender group angry over broadcasting boss wife bribe Investigations have been launched into claims that the head of the South African Broadcasting Company (SABC), a public broadcaster, was given a wife as a gift.

The Commission for Gender Equality said it had received a complaint after Hlaudi Motsoeneng was reported to have received a bride by traditional chiefs.

Don blames parents for varsity drop-out rates A university lecturer has attributed the high rate of university and college student drop outs to parental negligence and peer pressure.

Idda Mwaura, who teaches communication at St Pauls University, says many students are vulnerable to factors such as poverty, greed, peer influence and being away from the watchful eyes of their parents and guardians.

Mrs. Mwaura said parents and

guardians have also neglected their roles and their children have maximized on their absence.

“In this digital era, many parents are always busy with their work which makes them forget parenthood. “Some go as far as buying their children smart phones while in primary schools making them to know more than they should at a attender age.,” says Mwaura.

Jared Manyara, the BA broadcast production coordinator at the

University of Nairobi’s School of |Journalism and Mass Communication, says some students are overwhelmed by university and college life.

“Most of them come to college when very young and easily succumb to peer influence. The nature of freedom they get confuses them. Others get confused by money since some are from well-todo families,” Manyara says.

He says other students want to ‘live big’ like some of their mates who have a lot

of money and thus ending up dabbling in practices like drug peddling and prostitution.

“When they get into prostitution or drugs, they rarely attend classes hence the risk of expulsion. Some just drop out before the authorities start following them,’’ he said.

Cyber fraudsters target dating sites Fraudsters are stepping up phishing campaigns that target people who use dating websites, suggests research.

Net monitoring firm Netcraft, says the swindlers are sending emails seeking to steal login details for the sites.

Most of those emails are being sent from other websites already hacked so as to hide their identity.

Stolen data would be used to befriend other users in an attempt to trick them into handing over cash, it said.

The phishing campaign against dating sites marked a departure for fraudsters, who typically preferred to target banks, said Paul Mutton, a security analyst at Netcraft who investigated the attacks.

The attacks were “massive”, he said, adding that in the past week Netcraft had seen more than 100 compromised sites targeting Match.com alone.

So far, he said, it was not clear how sites were being compromised to host the scripts. Websites and servers run by individuals, small businesses, construction firms and telecom suppliers had all become unwitting hosts of the phishing tools, he added.

Mr Mutton said just one compromised site he had seen was home to about 800 short programs or scripts that targeted many different dating sites. Each script looked like it had been generated by a “kit” bought online.

“Anyone with a very basic knowledge of programming could make use of the kit,” he said.

The scripts are used to craft phishing emails that are spammed out to potential victims.

Addressing an annual general meeting in Nairobi on Thursday night, the Chairman of the United Business Association (UBA) Mr Jayendra Malde, said the numerous terrorist activities being reported are hurting all sectors of the economy, resulting in massive layoffs.

“The cash flow in the market is slow because of panicking from both the public and investors. No one would like to spend or invest without the surety of tomorrow” he said.

He asked the media not to dwell on negativity by giving rogue politicians coverage and asked them to avoid portraying the country as if it is in a crisis, a move that has been fuelling animosity.

Martin Weale, the Bank of England policymaker, said that there may be more spare capacity in the economy than policymakers had previously estimated meaning employers have room to keep hiring for some time before they have to increase wages to attract scarce workers.

The Bank of England had previously estimated that there was between 1 percent and 1.5 percent of spare capacity in the UK economy, but there was fear that it could be as high as 2 percent.

Underinvestment by business is what causes spare capacity and it

is the Bank’s way of gauging how far GDP is below its potential growth.

Mr Weale said that the low wage growth could also keep interest rates at 0.5 percent for longer than currently expected and policymakers should start to raise interest rates before any sustained rise in real wages occurred.

He added that for every one percentage point that unemployment was the estimated point, quarterly pay growth was likely to be 0.3 percent lower than it should be.

In December 2013, it had been previously estimated that 583,000 people, in the UK workforce, were employed on zero-hours contracts.

eBay bans sale of Star N9500 spy-linked phone eBay, one of the world’s biggest online marketplaces, is pulling the Androidpowered Star phone off the shelves after discovering that the model is pre-installed with spyware.

The Spyware software can collect a person’s personal data without their consent through smartphones, computers or other hand-held devices.

A security firm in Germany said the smartphone, especially the 9500 model, has a Trojan virus that cannot be eliminated. It enables the phone to send personal data to a server in China, the source manufacturer.

It was reported on Tuesday that the spyware is presented as an app from the Google Play store, making it hard for consumers to realise it’s threat.

The virus, identified as ‘Android.Trojan.

Uupay.D’, blocks phone users from installing security updates which may otherwise protect them from the threats.

“Due to reports that some Star 9500 smartphones are loaded with spyware, eBay is not allowing the sale of the devices as a precautionary measure,” a spokesman told the BBC. Personal data, online banking data, emails, text messages, can be retrieved via

the spyware.

Calls can also be intercepted as the camera and microphones are remotely controlled.

Efforts by EBay to track down the Chinese manufacturer have failed.

China has in the past been accused of manufacturing and preinstalling devices with spying software.

Microsoft raised alarm over malicious programmes that had been installed in computers made from China in 2012.

Some Android phones from China were discovered to have been distributed with a infected SD memory cards in 2013.

Eighty-eight per cent of all Kenyan households get income from one source.

A survey by Open Data, a government initiative that collects data on trends, shows that if majority of families were to lose a bread-winner, they would have nothing left by way of financial security.

Results from the study, dubbed ‘The Kenya Integrated Household budget Survey’, show that only 11.5 per cent of all households receive what experts call ‘other income’.

On average, ‘other income’ amounts to Sh17,172 a month for each household in Kenya. The cash comes from other businesses, investments, renting out of property, retirement benefits (pensions) and farming activities.

About 15 per cent of all households receive income from pensions that add up to Sh9,734 a month.

A similar study by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows that each adult spends about Sh7,200 per month in household expenses. This is almost half of the ‘other income’.

Families in urban areas receive an average of Sh26,701 a month in ‘other income’, while rural households receive Sh10,055.

From sand harvesting to roadside farming Ezekiel Muli has perfected the art of roadside farming and is now feeding hundreds in his Mlolongo and Athi River neighbourhoods in a venture that earns him Sh30,000 a month.

Formerly a sand harvester in Athi River, the 40-year-old Muli was inspired to start farming by the high prices of sukuma wiki and spinach in local eateries.

“I needed some greens on my plate but that only meant paying

Unfortunately, Muli had no land of his own. Armed with only a hoe, he set out to dig up the vast stretch of land along Mombasa road.

Farming on road reserves came with its share of challenges, including frequent harassment by county government officers, floods and theft. But this has not deterred the father of three.

some challenges while turning others into opportunities,’’ he says. Currently, Ezekiel’s ‘farm’ stretches for about a kilometre by the busy highway.

He has dug trenches next to his little gardens where he harvests flood-water for irrigation.

Ezekiel’s case presents a perfect example of how small scale farmers can improve food production by utilizing idle land.

Roadside farming has been

practiced informally across the globe for the past century.

During the First World War, American President, Woodrow Wilson called on his people to use all available land for farming, including road reserves.

This was to help them produce enough food for the country during the war. However, some people worry about the health effect from the vehicles exhaust fumes on the plants.

More than half of all businesses in Kenya do not succeed due to poor planning. When entrepreneurs fail to make the right decisions regarding their investments, they risk heavy losses.

To reduce the risks involved in making major business decisions, Kurt Lewin, a German-American psychologist, developed what is known as the ‘Force Field Analysis’ in the 1940s.

“Force Field Analysis is a useful decision-making technique,” explains James Manktelow, Founder and CEO of Mind Tools, a global team of experts who help more than 21,000,000 people each year learn ‘the essential skills for an excellent career’.

“It helps you make a decision by analysing the forces for and against a change, and it helps you communicate the reasoning behind your decision,” says Manktelow in a statement with his colleague, Amy Carlson.

Lewin originally used the tool in his work as a social psychologist.

Today Force Field Analysis is also used in business for making financial decisions.

“You use the tool by listing all of the factors for and against your decision or change and score each factor based on its influence, and add up the scores for and against.”

XPlico, a local insurance firm has launched a new medical cover package that will cost consumers a Sh30 a day in premiums.

The service, dubbed ‘Maisha Poa’ will provide users with an in-patient cover worth 500,000 a year. XPlico’s joins many other local insurers in the scramble for the low income market following reports that as many as 35 million Kenyans have no form of insurance whatsoever.

The low and middle-income consumers, therefore, present a good business opportunity for insurers. Over the past five years, many low-cost schemes have sprung up as competition for customers intensifies within the industry.

“Families are being driven to poverty by having to pay medical bills out of their pocket.

Medical expenses are too high for ordinary Kenyans,” Xplico principal officer, Stephen Karokii says.

The insurers new service will also include a package called the ‘Dhahabu Cover’, which will cover four more people and offer the user Sh20, 000 in outpatient care for a total of Sh65 a day.

Mobius Motors completes Sh800,000 truck assembly Mobius Motors has completed working on the Mobius 2 (above), a utility vehicle set to go on sale in Kenya for about Sh800,000.

The four-year-old start-up based in Nairobi, Kenya, has been working on the model for several years.

The two-door truck was designed to bring durable, affordable means of transport to rural areas.

The company hopes to eventually sell the cars across Africa.

The firm received funding

from the Richard Parsons’ Pan-African Investment Company to assemble the first 50 trucks.

The Mobius 2 is a bodyon-frame SUV with seating capacity for up to eight passengers. Its squared-off shape was developed to make repairs easy. With no air conditioning or side window glass, the costs remain further down.

Mobius is the brainchild of Joel Jackson, the 28-yearold UK expat, whose management-consulting

background brought him to Kenya to work in the forestry sector.

“I witnessed and experienced many challenges people face every day without proper transport,” he says.

The key to Mobius’s plan is the fact that Kenyan import duties don’t apply to individual components.

The company plans to source running gear and suspension parts from global automakers for assembly in Kenya.

Fury craves for Wilder clash at Old Trafford

Boxer Tyson Fury has called for a future fight with Deontay Wilder if the heavy-hitting American lands a world title later in the year.

Wilder is among the hottest properties in the heavyweight division after winning all of his 31 fights in knockouts. He is next in line to face new WBC champion Bermane Stiverne, with the fight likely to occur in November.

Fury must first get past Dereck Chisora in a rematch on July 26, but would relish a clash with Wilder. He hopes to lure the Alabama pugilist to the home of his favourite soccer team, Manchester United.

“I want to fight Deontay Wilder for the world title at Old Trafford,” he said.

“It’s the home of the team I

support and the biggest venue in the city.

“It’s a fight that would catch people’s imagination. They would think he could beat me and everyone would turn out.”

Victory over Chisora would guarantee Fury a shot at Wladimir Klitschko’s WBO title, but expects the Ukrainian to give up the belt rather than face him.

There has been bad blood between Chisora and the Wilmslow man in the buildup to next month’s clash. Fury flipped a table during a news conference, but vowed to keep his calm in coming weeks.

“Before any of that can happen, I’ve got to get past Dereck Chisora at the Phones 4U Arena next month,” he said.

Shaqiri fancies Swiss’ chances against France Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri is brimming with confidence following Switzerland’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Ecuador on Sunday and is optimistic about his side’s chances against France in their second match.

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s men were trailing 1-0 at half time Group E game at the Estadio Mane Garrincha in Brasilia and the match was headed for a draw before the Swiss snatched all three points with his stoppage-time winner.

“It’s a very good feeling to have won the game like this.

This was a very important game and we are all very happy,” Shaqiri said.

you play at the World Cup and get a result like this in the first game. This gives the team a boost for the second and third group games. So we are delighted that we won in the end.”

Hitzfeld’s men take on France in their second game tomorrow and Shaqiri maintains that Switzerland don’t fear the 1998 champions.

“France are the top team in our group and it will be a very difficult game for us. But it will be tough for France as well. We are a very good team,” Shaqiri said.

“Before the World Cup, we beat Germany and Brazil, so we have shown that we can beat big teams.”

Ecuador, Honduras in fight for survival Ecuador and Honduras must know a defeat for either of them at the Arena da Baixada tomorrow morning and they are gone.

The two teams face each other in the southern city of Curitiba soon after Group E rivals France and Switzerland finish their second match.

Italy look a safe bet to reach the last 16 with victory over giant-killers Costa Rica tonight but the four-time champions will be wary of Recife’s tropical conditions, and the plucky Costa Ricans.

The Central Americans, considered the pre-tournament whipping boys of Group D, sprung a major upset in their first encounter when they destroyed fancied Uruguay a 3-1 in Fortaleza on Saturday.

Now with four-time champions Italy in their sights, Jorge Luis Pinto’s men can all but secure their place in the last 16 of the competition with a game to spare if they beat Italy today.

The Azzurri, though, will also be full of confidence for this encounter, having disposed of England at the weekend with a 2-1 win in the heat

and humidity of Manaus.

What’s more, head coach Cesare Prandelli will have been boosted by the return to training of goalkeeper and Captain Gianluigi Buffon.

The 36-year-old missed the clash with England because of an ankle complaint, but could return against the Costa Ricans.

“They’ll be fired up after their win,” said Italy midfielder De Rossi. “If they had lost 4-0 then we might have underestimated them, but now there’s no chance of that.”

However De Rossi added: “But I hope, and I’m sure, we can beat Costa Rica.”

Marquez confident ahead of Holland TT Assen race

Defending champion Marc Marquez made it seven wins from as many races in this year’s MotoGP by taking the plaudits on his home circuit of Catalunya.

The Spaniard started second on the grid on his Honda, but took the lead from Italy’s Valentino Rossi with six laps to go and held off late challenge from team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Pedrosa’s battle with Marquez was a tight affair until the final stages when the former clipped his teammate’s wheel and almost came off his bike. This allowed Rossi to sneak through on his Yamaha for the runners-up spot.

Pedrosa held on for third while Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) followed the trio home to make it three Spanish riders in the top four as Andrea Dovizioso came fifth on his Ducati.

Marquez is looking forward to a

good race in next weekend’s race at Netherlands’ TT Assen.

“I’m really happy with the race and the weekend overall,” he said.

“When I had a good start I told myself ‘OK, now I’m here so I will try and keep up the pace’, and I had a really good feeling so I could stay (at the front) for the first few laps, even though the pace was already very fast. I hope the next race will be even better.”

Last week’s victory leaves Marquez on 175 points in the standings ahead of Rossi (117) and Pedrosa (112).

Kookaburras plot hockey supremacy

CHAMPIONS: The Kookaburras beat the Netherlands 6-1 to win the World title again.

Stefan de Vrij set to join Man United Stefan de Vrij will reportedly join Manchester United after the World Cup following claims the Premier League club have agreed a fee with Feyenoord to sign the Dutch defender.

Ingwe to hold annual fans fete at city’s Railways Club on Saturday

FUN ACTIVITY: Fans bond with players at a past AFC Leopards fans festival in Nairobi.

The AFC annual fans festival will be held on Saturday at Nairobi’s Railways Club.

The celebration will be the third which is a reward to fans as they celebrate the club’s Golden Jubilee.

The club has partnered with AFC Leopards supporters group, Claws Trust, in hosting the two previous editions of the fest by Claws Trust. The festival is expected to unite club supporters, other soccer fans and participants.

The chairman, Allan Kasavuli, has hailed the initiative and has asked fans to turn up in large numbers.

“This is a noble initiative and we hope to have our fans turn out in large numbers as we

celebrate 50 years.

We hope to stay united as we march to achieving our objectives this season and in years to come,” the official said.

The AFC Leopards fan fest 2014 will be among other premium events organised by the club this year.

Aidah Bunoro of the organising committee says: “There will be a fun and events for fans of all ages ranging from five-yearolds to those way above 50 years.” The planned events include a seven-aside football tournament for male and female participants, a 100-metre race, tag of war, egg, newspaper, sack and scavenger hunt races.

Lamouchi defends team despite Ivory Coast loss FRIday, June 20, 2014

Sabri Lamouchi has said he is not “obsessed” with Didier Drogba following the 2-1 defeat by Colombia.

The Elephants came from behind to beat Japan in their opening World Cup Group C game on Saturday when Drogba started on the bench.

The former Chelsea striker, who has been troubled by a thigh problem, was again a substitute against Colombia and was introduced just before his side fell behind to James Rodriguez’s 64th-minute header.

However, unlike in the game against Japan when he inspired the Elephants to victory, the Galatasaray man was at fault for the Colombians opening goal as was slow to reach the ball from a corner letting Rodriguez in for the superb header.

Juan Quintero added a second for Colombia before Gervinho pulled one back, but Lamouchi insisted he always picked the side

he felt best equipped to get a result rather than worrying about individuals.

“I am not obsessed with Didier Drogba,” the Frenchman said.

“If you look at the team, I have seen very interesting things from my players.

“It is just a few details that we missed, and that meant we lost the game.”

Lamouchi added: “My players did not deserve to lose, a draw would have been more deserved.

“It was a very experienced Colombian team who waited for us to make mistakes, unfortunately we made some and were hit in a hard way. We created some chances and came back to score, so I feel we lost unfairly.”

Lamouchi accepts the requirements for his side are clear heading into the showdown with Greece at Fortaleza on June 24.

“We will need to go and fight to get a victory against Greece, it is very simple. “
