the Constitution in the manner it handled the 2013 presidential election.

Should the committee find his accusations valid, MPs will debate the report and pass a resolution within 10 days on whether the commissioners should quit office or continue service.

The nine commissioners include chairman Isaac Hassan, vice-chair Lilian Mahiri-Zaja, Yusuf Nzibo, Thomas Letangule and Albert Camus. Others are Muthoni

Wangai, Abdullahi Sharawe, Mohamed Alawi and Kule Galma Godana.

The team’s fate awaits ruling of the case by Buke who has asked Parliament to recommend to President Uhuru Kenyatta to form a tribunal for the removal of the commissioners.

But IEBC has received accolades for their handling of the last elections, with the latest praise coming from Attorney General Githu Muigai who has defended its credibility.

An ongoing Commonwealth elections conference in Nairobi aimed at advancing norms and good electoral practices also appeared to have faith in the elections body by choosing Nairobi as the venue of the biannual summit.

But should Parliament recommend for the removal of the commission, there could be no more elections at least in 2014 as it will take about another six months to have new commissioners in place.

Sudan finally saves Christian woman from death sentence The Sudanese woman who had been sentenced to death after refusing to denounce Christianity has finally been released from prison.

Her lawyer said an appeals court in Sudan ruled that a lower court’s ruling against the 27-year-old suspect was faulty.

He declined to elaborate on the ruling. Meriam Yehya Ibrahim had, during the hearing of her case in May, told the judge she was a Christian and planned to remain one.

Her sentencing drew international condemnation as Sudan was criticised for infringing on individual right to freedom of worship. Ibrahim had been jailed while she was eight months pregnant and was also required to receive 100 lashes before being hanged. She reportedly gave birth in prison while

chained on her bed.

Ibrahim has since been re-united with husband Daniel Wani, who is wheelchair- bound and had been fully relying on her. The two were imprisoned along with the woman’s 20-month old son.

The criminal complaint filed by a brother, a Muslim, said her family was shocked to find out Ibrahim had married a Christian, US citizen Daniel Wani, after she went missing for years, her lawyer said.

Kenya counters SA’s tourist visa rules with strict terms for visitors Kenya has decided to enforce strict visa requirements on visitors from South Africa.

The new rules require South Africans to have a return air ticket and to pay a service charge of $70 (about Sh6, 000) each time they apply for a visa.

Applicants are also now required to have a letter of invitation from Kenya, proof of funds available, and to appear in person for biometric scanning (a way to confirm their identity) during a visa application. All these have to be done at the Kenyan embassy in South Africa.

ago, a move that has made it harder for tourists to visit the country. Previously, South Africans visiting Kenya got their visas at the point of entry.

Ministry says hunger worsened by poor roads Poor storage and communication facilities are the major causes of chronic food shortage, the Ministry of Agriculture has said.

Addressing an inter-governmental meeting on agriculture in Mombasa at the weekend, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei said improved storage facilities and road networks will save about 30 to 40 per cent of food from waste every season. He said the government is determined to address the hunger crisis by preventing food wastage.

“Most farmers’ produce end up being wasted and we must change this scenario,” he said. He attributed the shortage to laxity among extension officers who, he said, are not helping farmers properly manage their harvest. Koskei said: “They (extension officers) are sleeping in the villages unbothered.”

Soccer fans injured in Beirut suicide bombing The government’s advice to football fans to watch World Cup matches at home is becoming more relevant with another bomb attack targeting fans reported in Lebanon.

A suicide bomber is said to have detonated a car bomb near a Lebanese army

checkpoint last night in the capital, Beirut. At least 12 people watching World Cup football in a nearby cafe were wounded but it is unclear whether anyone was killed.

The blast, which caused a huge fire, occurred in a southern suburb mainly inhabited

by Shia Muslims and it is suspected that the fans were the target.

“We were watching the football game and the explosion happened,” eyewitness Zahi Assaf told local reporters.

“We did not know what was happening... then people

started running.” Fellow Beirut resident Marwan Shammas said he rushed to the area and “saw people running and screaming, people traumatized.”

Last week a suicide bomber killed 21 people in Damaturu in Northern Nigeria, and

injured 27 as they watched a World Cup match. This prompted a government ban on public screening of the World Cup in some parts of the country . The government last week asked fans to shun open and crowded public places over insecurity fears.

Report ranks Kenya among the world’s fairest nations Kenya has been ranked the best African country in contributing to the wellbeing of humanity and the planet.

The Good Country Index ranks countries by how they do business while encouraging them to think about the global impact of their actions, rather than cut throat self-interest.

Kenya was ranked 26th on the top 30 list, with the researchers saying it favourably competed with ‘first world nations’.

Ireland led the other eight Western Europe countries on the best top 10 while wartorn Iraq, Libya and Vietnam were lamped together at the bottom.

The study analyses and uses 35 separate indicators from the United Nations, the World Bank and other international institutions for the ranking.

Led by the Simon Anholt, the researchers termed Kenya as an ‘inspiring example’ which is making meaningful contribution to society.

Mr Anholt, a renowned policy advisor, said the survey’s aim is to spark debate among countries to work towards global common good, not to shame or judge any country.

“Do countries exist purely to serve the interests of their own politicians, businesses and citizens, or are they actively working for all of humanity and the whole planet?” he asked.

“The debate is critical, because if the first answer is the correct one, we’re all in deep trouble.”

He said the world has been reduced to a village and the countries must work together to mitigate global challenges or they will be out of hand.

“It’s time countries started thinking more about the international consequences of their actions.”

Hong Kong apparel firm plans Kenya operations

One of the world’s leading consumer products supply chain manager, Li & Fung, has expressed interest in setting up shop in Kenya.

The investment is part of efforts to meet global demand for premium textile products and related goods.

The Hong Kong-based industrial firm has just concluded a fact-finding mission to Kenya hosted by Industrialisation and Enterprise Development Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed. The

company is seeking to explore opportunities in Kenya’s textile sector.

Following a fact finding visit there are positive indicators that Li & Fung may be one of the first operators of the proposed Textile City to be located at the Export Processing Zone complex near Athi River Township, Machakos county.

Saudi investors plan Sh170m shopping mall in Hurlingham The government of Saudi Arabia is set to perform a Sh170 million ground-breaking ceremony for a shopping mall project in Nairobi in mid-August.

The project will be implemented through the Kenya Arab Friendship Society (KAFS). It is expected to provide opportunities for traders and space for artists to display their creations.

Dubbed the ‘King Fahd Cultural Centre’, the shopping mall will be set up in the upmarket Hurlingham area of the capital. The centre is scheduled for completion by December 2015, and is expected to strengthen relations between Kenya and the Middle Eastern kingdom.

LuckyCal helps investors keep track of clients

Many potential entrepreneurs do not have offices, much less a base of operations.

As a small business owner, it is difficult to pay for a physical address, especially when the investment is still new.

Many local entrepreneurs are therefore forced to sell goods and services online. Using websites and Facebook, smart business owners have been able to save time and money.

But with the list of clients and Facebook followers growing rapidly, it gets harder to keep track of the business.

Free online business tool, LuckyCal, allows entrepreneurs to keep track of clients. The system works like a calendar and can be used for social purposes. This makes it easier for users to meet friends or business contacts.

“The tool integrates work and personal calendars with those of your employees, friends, and business associates, as long as they give you permission,” says a statement from LuckyCal. “LuckyCal will scan your colleagues’ and clients’ Facebook profiles and e-mail you when they are in your area.”

While the current model is free to use, LuckyCal plans to charge for enterprise version for bigger businesses, which the firm will launch later in the year.

Subway to open 6 city outlets The local franchise of Subway, the US-based sandwich restaurant, is to expand its outlets from the current two to eight with six new cafes planned for Nairobi.

Christopher Bak, a director of Liberty Eagle Holdings, the owners of the licensing rights to Subway franchises in Tanzania and Kenya, said they are looking for rental spaces of between 600 and 1,000 square feet in Hurlingham, Westlands, Lavington, Upper Hill, Thika Road and Mombasa Road in Nairobi.

Subway opened its first outlet at The Junction on Ngong Road last year. The other is on old Cameo Cinema building on Kenyatta Avenue. It has become a popular joint for those seeking a quick meal, prompting the franchise to make expansion plans.

Sisal industry is underutilised Kenya’s sisal industry is greatly underexploited. As the world’s fourth largest producer of the crop, the country has failed to meet its full potential.

Sisal, which is grown for its fibre, used to make ropes, brushes and furniture, is grown by both small-scale and large-scale farmers.

Switzerland no longer a haven for illegal funds

A list of Indians who have deposited un-taxed wealth in Swiss banks has been released and their details prepared by Swiss authorities. The wealth will be shared with India.

A study by Global Financial Integrity estimates the amount of black money stashed abroad by Indians at between $500 billion (Sh43.7 trillion $1,400 billion (Sh122.5 trillion).

The export prices of sisal fibre have been on the up, jumping to Sh108, 817 last year from Sh35, 196 in 2000. This has been driven by demand from industrial consumers. This has led to a growing demand for exports with the Kenya Sisal Board (KSB) saying more than 80 per cent of the crop produced is now exported.

“It is a fact that local industries do not get enough stocks to meet their demand as most of the sisal produced is exported,” says the Board’s Managing Director, Naomi Kamau. In 2012, Kenya produced 27, 866 tonnes, out of which 24, 052 were exported. This was more than 86 per cent. Global production of sisal is 240,000 tonnes, of which Brazil produces 113,000.

The exposure is seen as a breakthrough and a major boost to India’s fight against illicit money.

The suspects are believed to have stashed the money through trusts, domiciliary companies and other legal entities based out of countries other than India.

“The names of these Indian individuals and entities have come under

Afropop beat goes on through Nhlanhla Little is known about the glamorous woman, Nhlanhla Nciza of the South Africa band Mafikizolo.

Nhlanla shot to fame in 1997 as part of the Mafikizolo threesome when they released their first self-titled album, Mafikizolo. The group lost one member, Tebogo Madingoane, in 2004.

Nhlanla now performs with Theo Kgosinkwe to treat Africa to the best of Afropop, House music and Kwaito.

She released two solo albums in 2008 after she and her group partner decided to take a break.

Her chic style in videos has left many in awe. She embraces African culture through her dress yet in a modern and classy way.

This is part of the reason she has become one of Africa’s favourite female artist. Of course what sells her more is her ability to capture the crowd with her beautiful vocals. In her songs, she is a happy go-girl and looks carefree with her dance moves.

God knows Nciza deserves those broad smiles and happy moments after shouldering a couple rough moments in

the past years. In December 2009, she lost her five year old daughter, Zinathi Nciza, in road accident.

Kibera kids get a chance at the Uweza Academy Uweza Academy in Kibera slum is a centre for education, football, and other sport for boys and girls.

The academy accepts talented but poor children giving them access to education and training facilities to help them develop their talent.

The boys and girls are grouped according to their ages to facilitate better training. After acquiring some basic skills, they are allowed to compete in a league in the slum area to help grade their performance.

All the children who compete in other programs are also awarded certificates and exercise books as a way to motivate them to work hard and do their best.

Lamu’s architectural beauty Lamu town which is situated on the Kenyan north coast is celebrated for its intricate Swahili architecture and culture.

The old town has existed for more than 1000 years and was recently named a Unesco world heritage site. The town is the best preserved Swahili settlement on the East African coast.

Toilet Paper Roll Mask Sculptures French artist Junior Fritz Jacquet has always been fascinated by paper from a young age. He has used it to make some of his creations. One of his most notable works are mask sculptures made of toilet paper rolls.

Puffy pancakes are good bitings

A pancake is a round, flat and thin cake that is prepared from a flour batter.

Pancakes are mostly had for breakfast as an alternative to bread or mandazis but they can be eaten at any time of the day - for lunch with beef stew, for supper with vegetables or as dessert.

A variety of toppings or fillings including jam, fruit, syrup, chocolate chips, or whip cream can be used to sweeten them.

The main ingredients for pancakes are; flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, eggs, milk, melted butter/ margarine or vegetable oil.

First, sieve and mix the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt). Whip up the eggs separately, add milk to them and beat together until they bubble. Add the oil or butter to the mixture of milk and eggs, mix it all up with the dry ingredients, and whisk together carefully until they combine.

The milk and baking powder are optional, water can also be used.

Do not over mix, a few lumps are fine, a smooth batter will make flat rubber-like pancakes instead of the soft fluffy ones.

Let the batter rest for 15-20minutes. Heat the cooking pan at max-

imum then lightly it with with oil.

Then using a greased scooping cup, pour the mixture on the pan.

Do not try to round the pancake by pouring the batter in a circular way, just dump the mixture and it will round itself out.

When bubbles start forming on the top side of the pancake, gently ease the spatula under the pancake and turn it. Do not pat it down or press down the pancake, it will ruin the texture inside.

Keep adjusting the heat accordingly to prevent over or undercooking.

They can be served with coffee, tea or juice.

Bird nest soup, another Chinese delicacy Bird nest soup is a popular delicacy in China and is among one of the most expensive delicacies in the world. A nest, specifically those made by the swiftlet birds will sell for USD 2,500 (Sh218, 450) per kilogramme. The nests of the tiny birds found in South East Asia have been used for cooking in China for over 400 years.

The nests are said to be rich in nutrients and are believed to provide health benefits like helping in indigestion, asthma, raising libido, keeping women young and improving the voice. The main attraction for the nests is their supposed aphrodisiac properties.

The nests are built during the breeding season by the male swiftlet for 35 days. Instead of twigs and straw, the swiftlet makes its nest from strands of its own gummy saliva, which hardens when exposed to air.

Harvesters have now resorted to snatching the nests immediately they are finished or when they have eggs in them. A plate of bird nest soup would cost from $30 (Sh2, 621) to $100 (Sh8, 738) The bird nest can also be used as an ingredient in other foods like rice to make congee, birds nest boiled rice and various desserts like egg tarts and many more.

Defending Total Quartz Economy Run champion Mike Anderson won a closely contested 2014 tournament by a narrow margin of Sh28 worth of petrol beating the 2010 winner Amon Hajula.

Anderson drove a two-litre Alfa 155 sports saloon to cover the 84 kilometre route between ABC Service Station in Waiyaki Way and the Total Service Station in Naivasha town on 2.39 litres of petrol to achieve an average consumption of 35.15 km per litre.

Heavy mist at top of the escarpment made conditions difficult and forced an extension of the set time by Alfa Romeo Owners Club which has organised the event for the past 32 years.

In addition to registering his fourth overall win, Anderson took first prize in the over 1,800 cc fuel injection class. Kenyans may give Kenya Open a miss over low prizes

The annual Kenya Open tennis championship is likely to get a backlash after a number of high-profile players threatened to skip the pending championships if key issues are not addressed.

Low prizes, lack of organisation and mistreatment of players by officials are some of the major complaints participants from Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe have raised.

The culprits are likely to barred from future championships.

Pace setter dims champion Kipsang at the Olomouc race Marathon world record holder Wilson Kipsang was at the weekend beaten by an unheralded pacemaker in the Olomouc half-marathon.

Training partner Geoffrey Ronoh won by eight seconds in a course record time of one hour 17 seconds at the Czech Republic.

Ronoh came sixth in his only previous IAAF-listed race, the 2013 Ahmedabad Marathon, in India.

“I knew through our training that he was strong,” said Kipsang.

Ronoh’s time in India was more than 12 minutes short of fellow Kenyan Kipsang’s record of 2:03:23, set last year in Berlin.

“In coming here, he told me to pace-make as fast as I could to make 28:20 (for 10km),” said Ronoh.

“I know this is a surprise, but it was part of my running technique,” said Ronoh.

Similar instances have also occurred frequently in the marathon. This, however, registers as more shocking. The expected showdown between 2:03 marathoners Kipsang and fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto never materialised. From the opening gun, Kipsang, Ronoh and Nicholas Bor left the rest of the men in their wake.
