High fat diets fuelling Kenya’s diabetes toll
From Page 1 Three in every 100 Kenyans are suffering from diabetes. And the number may rise to five in the next 10 years if Kenyans do not stop gaining unnecessary weight. As a leading cause of blindness, renal failure and lower limb amputation, the disease has turned into a major concern for many families. However, John Omollo, a 78 year-old father of nine, has lived with the noncommunicable disease for almost three decades. He says patients should not view the disease as a death sentence. Diagnosed with diabetes in 1986, he relies on insulin injection, a practice that has become a daily routine in order to keep the disease at bay. “I have lived on insulin injection and drugs for more than 27 years,” he says. “Diabetes is a bad disease and I would not wish that others get it. But if that happens, patients should continue living normal lives (because) it is not a death sentence,” he says. He warns that adherence to medical prescriptions is key. “The only reason I have lived for many years is because I was warned of disasters of negligence by my doctor. He
sat with me and my wife and gave us directives of how to handle my diet to maintain sugar levels,” he says. The doctor says training and sweating, eating and taking drugs promptly as prescribed is the only way to survive with diabetes. The disease is strongly linked to being overweight and too much blood sugar in the body. Experts have warned Kenyans to reduce sugar intake which the World Health Organisation says should be cut to just six tea spoonfuls a day. They have also warned against intake of too much junk foods and sugary products. And Omollo is urging everyone to keep healthy. “I would like to urge those who would love to lead a healthy life to exercise daily and avoid gaining unnecessary weight because diabetes is a relentless disease,” he says. WHO estimates that the prevalence of diabetes in Kenya stands at 3.3 per cent but is predicted to rise to 4.5 per cent by 2025. The UN agency has called for an assessment of the disease burden and cost-effective strategies for its prevention and control taken to reduce its impact.

learning time: Pupils learning in a classroom. The government has stopped the registration of new schools.
State freezes new schools registration Registration of new schools has been suspended indefinitely to control the rising shortage of teachers. Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang told a meeting of head teachers in Mombasa the Government hopes to improve on the existing number of schools and registering others may strain the available resources.
Kipsang urged Kenyans, communities and organisations wishing to launch new schools to first consider factors such as distance between schools, available feeder ones and the compelling need to do so. He said setting up new institutions would require more teachers against the prevailing shortage.
In a speech read at the venue, President Kenyatta ordered the ministry to ensure only viable schools are established. “I instruct the ministry to relook at the mushrooming of public schools to ensure only viable ones are established,” he said. Kipsang also opposed a proposal by the school heads for the upgrading of more
institutions to national status. He instead called for the expansion of existing ones to accommodate more students from across the country. Kenya Secondary School heads Association Chairman John Awiti asked Kipsang to ensure the Teachers Service Commission is constituted and registered as a national commission.
Same script, same cast An image asking Kenyans not to be fight each other on account of things politicians say has been trending on the social media. The image shows how politicians cluster in groups and rage against each other, only to later team up with their assumed enemies under different circumstances. All this as Kenyans pay the big price of the animosity as they fight each other along tribal lines. A joint statement by Christian leaders expressed disappointment in the way
a number of politicians have been conducting business. “We have watched in recent days as politicians who promised and swore that never again would Kenya walk the sad road of ethnic violence of 2007/2008, move around inciting Kenyans against one another and causing unnecessary tensions. “Elected and appointed leaders must make a distinction between politics and statesmanship; while the former pursues short term self- gratifying interests the latter strives
for long term vision for the country,” the statement said. The leaders urged Kenyans to “cease from spreading rumours, incitement and inflammatory and derogatory remarks of any kind that may spiral to ethnic violence due to the volatile atmosphere.” “The name-callings, and ethnic profiling on social media and other public places should stop,” said the statement, signed by four church primates, including Dr Eliud Wabukala of the Anglican Church of Kenya, said.

Headteachers told to lead HIV/Aids war
Mobile money agents frustrated by poor profits
Head teachers meeting in Mombasa have been told to lead the fight against HIV/AIDS to help reduce the number of young people getting infected. Unesco program officer Jane Kamau told the principals that about 100,000 new HIV infections are reported in the country every year, with those aged between 15 and 24 being the majority of victims. She revealed that about 6,000 teachers are infected with HIV while 242,000 under-14-yearolds are also infected with the virus.
Fire destroys electronic factory
Property valued at millions of shillings was this morning destroyed in a fire at an electronic factory in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. The fire is said to have started from one of the rooms in the factory before it spread. Police say they are yet to know the cause of the fire. It is the second fire to happen in the area in less than 24 hours. Yesterday afternoon, another factory was burnt down along Enterprise Road in the area.
Man’s body found in pool in Kasarani
A body of a man was found in a pool of water in Kasarani today morning. It is not clear if the victim was killed and dumped there or he drowned. The body was later removed to the mortuary. In Kayole and Ongata Rongai areas, two suspects were lynched by a mob in botched robbery incidents. In Langata, a German woman was robbed of more than Sh10,000, jewellery, mobile phones and four computers in an attack.
Mobile money agents are tired of high operational costs, the inability to make money from rival operators, inconsistent networks and insecurity. A study by tech firm, MicroSave and The Helix Institute of Digital Finance has revealed that agents are so frustrated by their businesses that most of them would quit if they were given the chance. In fact, more than 50 per cent of them do not plan on staying in the same job on a long term basis. The challenges they face have played a part in reducing their monthly income. “Only 58 per cent of agents said they thought they would be an agent in one year’s time,
which is significantly lower than Uganda and Tanzania and shows dissatisfaction,” said the survey. Kenyan agents make an average of $117 (Sh10, 200) a month while those in Uganda make $136 (Sh11, 900) and those in Tanzania earn $126 (Sh11, 000). In Kenya, 17 per cent of agents don’t make profits, which is higher than the 13.5 per cent in Uganda and the 5 per cent in Tanzania. “High price levels in Kenya mean it is hard to have a solely agency business,” said the report. “Tanzanian agents earn revenue from multiple providers due to high levels of non-exclusivity.”
Universities told to invest more in ICT for eLearning
Inadequate investment in technology by universities is hindering e-Learning, a report has said. In a survey carried out in 2013 by The Kenya Education Network (Kenet) on 30 universities, the institutions spent just 0.5 per cent of their total recurrent expenditure on internet. With the rising students into both private and public universities, Kenet says this should be increased to at least 1 per cent to provide adequate laboratory and computers to match students’ needs. The report says students preferred cyber café or handheld device internet to that to their institutions-which they say is slower and constantly fluctuating. The report shows 56 per cent of the students sampled said their network kept fluctuating with more than 50 per cent of them saying hand held devices were faster than college internet. “The high degree of dissat-

isfaction clearly points to inadequate investments in campus infrastructure as well as ICT human capacity, which are critical issues,” the report reads in part. The computer laboratories available are limited and they are
poorly equipped, making the student, 35 per cent, opt for cyber cafes. Only 17 per cent of those with laptops are able to access the college internet. “Universities therefore need to invest in student computer labs to serve the students
who are unable to purchase laptops or those who may not wish to carry them to university campuses,” said Kenet. These big numbers require better internet services to facilitate eLearning and other internet services with
efficiency. The report says this is an indication that the learning institutions are ill prepared to deliver on this emerging learning platform, hence the urgent need to address this issue.
US in bid to get woman freed from death row leaves Sudan The US is working closely with Sudan to ensure a Sudanese woman who was Monday freed from death row is allowed to leave the country. Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, 27, was re-arrested on Tuesday and detained
at Khartoum airport as they were trying to fly to the US. Her husband Daniel Wani is a Christian from South Sudan who has a US citizenship. Meriam Ibrahim’s lawyer says she and her husband are being questioned over
their travel documents. She was sentenced in May to hang for renouncing Islam - sparking an outcry - but was released from jail on Monday. Security agents detained Mrs Ibrahim, husband Daniel Wani and two
children at the airport on Tuesday, her lawyer, Thabit Suliman, said. “The security authorities have not stated why she was apprehended and they are still being held in a security building at the airport,”
the lawyer added. US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Sudan’s government had given assurances that Mrs Ibrahim and her family were safe. A top Sudanese official had earlier said although Mrs
Ibrahim is Sudanese, she was using emergency South Sudanese papers with a US visa. She would be asked to get a passport and exit visa on her release, Abdullahi Alzareg from the ministry of foreign affairs said.

Varsity changes name to woo more learners Inoorero University will from next month change its name to International University of Professional Studies (IUPS) in a rebranding move to attract more learners. Vice Chancellor Koi Muchira Tirima told X News the university wants to rebrand in order to erase tribal connotations and improve its appeal. “The main reason why we are renaming the school is because the market rejected its former name, Inoorero. This university was born immediately after the post-election violence in 2008 when people were very sensitive to tribal connotations hence the need for re-branding,” Prof Tirima said. Inoorero, the name given to the school based on the college’s founding vision and philosophy, is a Kikuyu word which means the ‘Sharpening Place’. “The name Inoorero was, therefore, indicating the place for sharpening of skills, thinking and competences, and marks the founding philosophy of the school,” said Prof Tirima. The long journey of rebranding started in August

last year August when Ipsos research company and another research firm were contacted for market analysis and research. “We also did our internal social media research and 98 per cent of respondents agreed that we should change the name,” she said.
Prof Tirima said the research presented a platform for market acceptance since many respondents were for a change in the name. “We also suggested six names and the best won. That was the International University of Professional Studies,” she said.
UneP report links charcoal trade to terrorism activities Governments should share intelligence on illegal charcoal trading, which is said to be the key source of funds for terror activities. A report by UNEP and Interpol says charcoal trade poses greater security threat than poaching in Kenya. The report established a direct link between illegal charcoal business and terrorism. But the information did not establish links between poaching and terrorism despite what the report termed as anecdotal evidence. UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said illegal charcoal trade fetches an estimated $1.9 billion (Sh161 billion) annually. “Charcoal is the primary finance for Al Shabaab and we’re dealing with four to ten million dollars annually, whereas when we speak

about charcoal, we’re talking of threat finance to the tune of $111 million (Sh9.35 billion) and $289 million (Sh24.56 billion) annually,” says the report. During the capture of Kismayu from Al Shabaab, KDF had to disrupt the terror group’s charcoal trade. Interpol’s Assistant Director
Environmental Security Sub-Directorate David Higgins said for a direct link to be established between poaching and terrorism, the affected governments had to share information with the agency. “We’re trying to assess the linkages between ivory and terrorism,” he said.
The school was initially known as School of Professional Studies before changing to Kenya School of Professional Studies and then Inoorero. She said the re-branding does not mean running away from the Kikuyu community since the founding philosophy will
reign. The school has about 700 students pursuing certificate, diploma, degree, and online courses from Australia, Japan and South Sudan. The institution’s aim is to equip Kenyan youth with world class skills that will empower them to fit in a fast-changing world.
commonwealth boss impressed by Kenya’s youth agenda Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma has hailed Kenya for involving the youth in her development agenda. Speaking when he called on President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday, Sharma said Kenya has done a lot in promoting the welfare of women. “The allocation of 30 per cent of all government procurement to the youth, women and people with disability will go a long way in boosting that critical segment of the population. The Youth and the Uwezo Funds are also unique initiatives that that will benefit women and the youth,” he said. He said the Commonwealth is focused on bringing the youth on board in its activities through awareness and profile-building. He briefed the President on the reforms at the Commonwealth and assured him of his organisation’s support on Kenya’s development agenda. Uhuru said the Jubilee administration is keen on including the youth and women in its development endeavors. “Kenya has one of the most progressive constitution in the world that has entrenched the rights of women and the youths,” said President Uhuru.

Phones may be used to track bacteria, study says A new survey by US scientists say smartphones reflect the personal microbial world of their owners with more than 80 per cent of the common bacteria that make up our personal bacterial “fingerprints” ending up on the phones’ screens. Writing in Peer Journal, the scientists say personal possessions, such as phones, might be useful for tracking the spread of bacteria because they
reflect our microbiome - the trillions of different microorganisms that live in and on our bodies. With mobile phone users found to be touching their devices on an average of 150 times a day, the biologists from the University of Oregon detected an overlap between the collection of micro-organisms naturally present on our bodies and those on the screens of smartphones. In the study, they sequenced the
DNA of microbes found on the index fingers and thumbs of 17 people. They also took swabs of the subjects’ smartphones. A total of 7,000 different types of bacteria were found in 51 samples. On average, 22 per cent of bacterial families overlapped on fingers and phones. Some 82 per cent of the most common bacteria present on participants’ fingers were also found on their phones.
They included three families that are commonly found on the skin or in the mouth Streptococcus, Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium. Men and women both shared bacteria with their phones, but the connection was stronger in women. Lead researcher Dr James Meadow said while the sample size was small, the findings were “revealing”. “This project was a proof-
of-concept to see if our favourite and most closely held possessions microbially resemble us,” he said. “We are ultimately interested in the possibility of using personal effects as a non-invasive way to monitor our health and our contact with the surrounding environment.” The researchers say there is no evidence that mobile phones present any more infection risk than any other possession.

Relatives of Mohammed Krakra, an Israeli Arab teen, carry his coffin during his funeral at the northern Israeli Arab village of Arabeh, Israel, Monday, June 23, 2014. Israeli warplanes bombed the Syrian military headquarters and a number of other targets inside Syria, the Israeli military said Monday, in a blistering response to a cross-border attack that killed Krakra the previous day.
Depression raises heart attack risk in young women Depression doubles chances of a young woman suffering from heart attack or dying from a heart disease, a study has said. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at 3, 237 patients suspected or suffering from heart disease. The patients were being scrutinised for narrowing of arteries supplying blood to the heart-angiography. On the day of the scrutiny, the patient was asked nine questions to determine their state of mind. The study author Dr. Amit Shah, a cardiologist at Emory University in Atlanta, says patients under 55 years with moderate or severe depression were twice at risk of experiencing heart attack in the next few years. The study concluded that women under 55 years were also likely to die of or suffer heart attack. Those depressed but above 55 years did not show the same risk. Dr. Shah suggested that hormonal regulation may be the reason for increasing the risk for these women than any other group of people, although it has not been proven by research. A 2012 separate study on 7, 000 US adults by John Hopkins University found that women between the age of 17 and 39 had high risk of dying from ischemic heart disease. Shah says patients with cardiac diseases are likely to seek medication because they know their condition unlike the depressed. who may not know they are in this condition.

State to link farmers with produce markets
Farmers and agri-business owners will benefit from a Government project that seeks to maximise earnings across the production chain. The Government plan involves maximising earnings across the production chain in the 2014/15 financial year. The target beneficiaries include smallscale farmers, greenhouse owners, land entrepreneurs and large-scale farms. “This is one of the State’s bigger strategy to transform the agriculture sector,” Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei said in a statement earlier in the week. Speaking during the opening of the Ag-
rictec–Africa International Exhibition and Conference at KICC in Nairobi, Koskei said the Government plans to ensure agricultural produce sells at the highest possible prices in local and international markets. Agriculture provides jobs for more than half of the country’s working population. The sector earnings average about Sh5 billion a year. The African Union (AU), which declared 2014 as the year of Agriculture and Food Security, says 60 per cent of people rely wholly or partly on agriculture for livelihoods while a vast majority live in poverty.
“It’s not pity and hand-outs that they need but access to markets and finance, land tenure security, knowledge and technology,” said International Fund for Agricultural Development President Kanayo Nwanze. Addressing an AU meeting earlier this month, he said a thriving sector “helps rural areas retain the young people who would otherwise be driven to migrate to overcrowded cities.” In line with Mwanze’s statement, Koskei says the Government focus is on making the industry “more commercial, technologically driven and internationally competitive.”

A domain is a unique name that helps to identify a person’s website, such as ‘ThisIsMyDomain. com’. A number of online companies have been selling domain names after businesses realised the benefits of having online presence. ‘GoDaddy’ filed papers to raise $100 million (Sh8.8 billion) through sale of its company shares. GoDaddy is one of the world’s biggest domain name registration firms.
Google’s move puts them in direct competition with GoDaddy since the latter manages 57 million domains and has made $1.1 billion (Sh96.3 billion) from business since 2013.
A strike by over 600 construction workers has stalled operations at the Olkaria 1 power plant. The industrial action has paralysed the country’s hope of getting an extra 280 Megawatts of power by the end of the year. The extra supply would have been used to reduce blackouts and provide power to new customers through the national grid. The strike by H-Young Company staff has entered
the second week over risk allowances. Samuel Mweu says workers risk lives while working at Olkaria’s steam fields. “The steam has some poisonous gases in and we have been having workers admitted to hospitals due to illnesses associated with the gases,” says Mweu. The workers say they were supposed to get the allowances last month.

creditpointer SMEs to gain from MYC4’s loan market
OPEN FOR BUSINESS: An Insurance lobby has criticised banks involvement in providing cover.
Insurance lobby up in arms over banks selling cover Banks and insurance companies have been criticised regarding bancassurance, a service that lets banks sell insurance to customers directly. Bima Intermediaries Association of Kenya, a lobby group for the insurance sector, has said that the service will fail if lenders continue forcing
clients to choose from their limited group of service providers. Washington Ndegea, chairman of Bima, argues that banks limit their clients to buying insurance covers from only the service providers that they prefer without the customers’ best interests in mind.
Bancassurance was recently adopted in the country to increase the uptake of insurance services in the market since only three per cent of Kenyans have a cover. This translates to 35 million potential customers for both banks and insurance companies. With bancassurance, banks

Local furniture makers can earn a year’s salary in one month’s sale of work for some artisans. The Programme also notes that it costs close to Sh20,000 to set up an informal furniture industry, an amount that caters for tools, timber and other equipment. Furniture makers also pay for some of their supplies from deposits left by customers. The Kenyan furniture industry directly employs over 60,000 people while providing income for an estimated 400,000 dependents. However,
He says the practice goes against guidelines set by the Insurance Regulatory Authority. “Banks are really messing up the insurance industry by forcing their clients to take insurance from certain companies when they go to them for financing,” he says.

COSSY: Local furniture makers are losing out to imported products
Independent furniture makers earn an average of Sh33,000 a month, says a survey by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Since they work based on orders and commissions from their customers, their income is often irregular. UNEP notes that some may go for weeks without money but make as much as Sh400,000 from a single sale that very month. This is equivalent to a years’ worth

Small and medium-sized enterprises in Kenya provide most of the country’s new jobs yet these businesses have the hardest time accessing loans says the International Journal of Business and Economics Research. In response to these challenges, MYC4 is offering small business loans of up to Sh480,000. MYC4 is an internet marketplace with physical offices in Nairobi where anyone with cash can lend money directly to entrepreneurs who are doing business in Africa. It is an international community of lenders and borrowers that allows anyone to either borrow money or lend at a fee. By visiting MYC4.com, almost anyone can open an online account and ask for credit. The money is quoted in Euros (€). The minimum amount a person can borrow is €400 (Sh48,000). The maximum amount is €4,000 (Sh480,000). MYC4 is a crowd-funding service, meaning that several lenders contribute towards funding a number of projects.
the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) says it is not well developed as local furniture makers have been losing out to imported furniture, which is is a lot cheaper. Julius Kirima, the Senior Industrial Development Officer at the Ministry, says that by the end of this year, the Government will make sure that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) gain access to new markets, thereby saving the industry.
Ibrahim Talib has managed to create a flower export business almost by accident. He was inspired to start selling flowers when a friend from Egypt curiously asked him for the prices of local plants. Having gone to Egypt to study Nautical Technology, he made friends with many of the locals, who, as it turns out, were quite fond of Kenyan flowers. He decided to become their supplier. Word quickly spread of his exploits and Egyptian customers would call him from time to time. “Within 10 days I had four price offers,” he recalls. “I entered into a deal with an Egyptian client but my first attempt at the business was very disappointing.” At the time, Talib unknowingly exported 17 boxes each containing 5,400 medium-sized roses instead of the bigger that the client had wanted. His client took

the blame for not specifying what he needed and Talib was careful never to let a mistake like that happen again. Knowing that this was a golden opportunity to grow his little venture, Talib went
to the internet to research on how the business works. He has since developed close ties with the Magana Flower farm, which delivers most of his orders. His clients now get his contacts from an online portal.

Kenyans take to fast food as health drops Eating a packet of chips a day is like drinking five litres of oil in one year. It is a fact that fast food culture has caught up in Kenya. The resultant effects are obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other varieties of non-communicable diseases that are now a present danger for many Kenyans. Dr Paul Wangai of Avenue Nursing Home says this is because many people find it easier to buy processed foods like pizza, burgers and chips. “What’s interesting is that those eating fast food most frequently were younger, better educated, smoked less and were more likely to be physically active. These fast foods contain no nutrients and the fat is hard to break down and ends up pilling up in the body
causing heart disease,” says Dr Wangai “Also these fast foods are mostly eaten with soft drinks and the excess sugar causes diabetes while the uncooked salt in the chips contributes to high blood pressure. With more fast food joints around the country, cases of non-communicable diseases will keep rising.” The US Department of Health and Human Services discovered that the combination of a poor diet and a lack of physical activity causes 310,000 to 580,000 deaths every year. These numbers are significantly higher than deaths caused by accidents. In a study by the Nairobi University, students claimed “high prices of food” led to popularity of fast food joints.

Sherri Walters, a cancer survivor from USA witnessed a new ear grown on her wrist to replace the one she lost to cancer. Doctor Patrick Byrne of John Hopkins University led fellow surgeons in the ear reconstruction process. Sherri noticed a swelling on her left ear in 2010 and consulted a doctor. Within no time, she was diagnosed with basal-cell carcinoma, a cancer of the skin. Doctors removed her ear, neck glands, lymph nodes and a section of her skull
because the infection had encroached the ear canal. Walters, 42 years then found the ear on forearm idea weird but she gave it a shot. Rib cartilage, skin grafts and arteries from other body parts were implanted beneath the skin of her forearm in November 2011. In March 2012, doctors retrieved the ear and attached it to her head. Cosmetic surgeries were done to correctly fit the ear. A final surgery followed later to successfully end the 20 month procedure.

You can swallow food even if you are upside down You can still swallow food even if you are upside down. Livescience, a science journal, says food moves down to the stomach not by gravity but by peristalsis, the process of constriction and relaxation of oesophagus muscles in a wavelike manner. Not much chemical digestion happens in the stomach. It mixes chewed food (chyme) with digestive chemicals called enzymes and the food is chemically broken down in the small intestines. Digestion of starch starts in the mouth, not in the stomach. The human digestive system is about nine metres long, starting from the mouth and ending at the anus. This length allows for breakdown and absorption of the various nutrients in food. The small intestines are the longest part of the digestive system. Their surface area is about 2, 700 square feet, the size of a tennis court. Flatus, the foul gas produces when one’s stomach is full or constipated, is a combination of swallowed air and gases produced by the fermentation of bacteria. They include carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulphide. These gases give a person flatulence, which produces the smell of a rotten egg. The stomach can ‘eat’ itself. The many enzymes and corrosive acids in the stomach can digest its walls, making it to produce mucus to protect itself from these chemicals.

Bathroom tiles guarantee safety in case of accidents Putting tiles on bathroom floors helps keep water and moisture prone areas hygienic. Water, in all its forms, allows germs to thrive, thus exposing house users to health risks. “Tiles are water resistant. Water easily drips off to let them remain dry, hence inhabitable for disease causing organism,” says Joseph Mitema. Mitema, an interior finisher in Ongata Rongai, says the versatility of tiles
enables them to perform several functions in order to remain safe and enjoy showering experience. Tiles are also a safety feature because of resistance to slip. “Most tiles enhance the grip of feet to the floor. Bathrooms are constantly exposed to water, therefore, they are likely to be slippery, exposing bathroom users to accidents of falling,” he says. The flooring materials improve aesthetic value of bathroom to give a
fresh and friendly showering experience. Because tiles are stain resistant, they look neat on the floor and they are easy to clean because all tey need is wiping after shower to remain charming. In addition, iles have specific chemical and thermal characteristics that enable them resist force stain and water absorption. This saves on the cost of replacing worn out floors because of chipping and breaking. Although they
are easy to maintain, cracks do not mean you will have to replace the entire floor. The most common and most preferred tiles are ceramic tiles due to their durability. The porcelain type gives special glare because of the high-polish finish. It is more durable than the ceramic type, says Calfinder, a homes maintenance site.

Let your home shine in the glow of the dazzling accent wall paint Accent wall painting is a fresh way of spicing homes with a little drama. It breaks the usual dull one colour paintjob for the residence. Accent wall painting technique involves the application of different schemes of colours which are placed next to each other to create a unique, striking design. Use of one bold colour in a room can be boring, monotonous and psychologically distractive. Homes &
Gardens, a homes site, says placing contrastive colours adjacent to each other introduces drama because of the ‘friendly’ clash. The site says the method helps highlight a house with many wall facets to achieve a desirable aesthetic effect. Deciding on the colour of the house can sometimes be difficult especially when children and parents propose rival colours. Accent wall method gives
the family the freedom to choose. And the variety can be applied to please all in the room though at different points. This will provide a scheme of clashing colours because each party will have a varied preference, enhancing drama. However, the clash has to be done on a separate piece to ensure the desired effect is achieved before transferring it onto the wall, Silas Juma, a painter says.

worldthrill Whitewater rafting is fun but risky White water rafting is all about navigating a vessel on water with the sole desire to have fun. With sudden bends and roaring foaming rapids, every maneuvere spells danger. Most participants choose the most treacherous of rivers with deep waterfalls and sudden bends to heighten the thrill. This is the only game that is graded from the first level to the sixth. The higher the grade, the more the danger involved. As the degrees graduate from one to another, the rapids intensify and so do the chances of getting hurt or killed by smashing into rocks, being tossed out or drowning. If you fall out of the boat, foot entrapment could ensnare you, making it impossible to dislodge yourself for quite some time. Broken bones or twisted knees are common injuries. The problem with waterfalls is that you can’t see how steep the drop is beforehand. By the time it’s over, it could be too late. In 2006, CNN reported 25 snowboarding deaths in the first 8 months of that year.
It’s an Olympic sport but snowboarding kills airborne: A snowboarder does his thing. Snowboarding is still one of the most dangerous sports around.
Snowboarding is a winter sport that involves descending a snow-covered slope while standing on a board. The board is attached to the snow boarder’s feet using a special boot set into a mounted binding. Skateboarding, surfing and skiing inspired the development of snowboarding in the US in 1960s,
and in 1998 it became a Winter Olympic Sport. The sport requires special gear starting with the special footwear. The sport requires specific boots that have grip to keep them stable on the board. The trick of snowboarding is learning how to maintain a stable stance on the snowboard so as not to lose
balance and fall. A snowboarder also needs gloves, helmets, knee pads, elbow pads to avoid injuries. The chances of getting injured range from innocent little slips to high impact crashes. Falling is the leading cause of injury in snowboarding. Falls are followed by collisions with objects like stones and other
snowboarders. The overall injury rate is estimated to be 4 per 1,000 snowboarding days. Any fall could leave one paralysed. There is also the risk of one suffering a head concussion that could lead to a traumatic brain injury. Kevin Pearce, a two-time Olympic medallist snowboarder, suffered brain damage in snowboarding fall.

Nadal eager to wipe off Wimbledon nightmares World No 1 Rafael Nadal recorded his 700th career win over Slovakian Martin Klizan to get his wimbledon campaing on a good start on Tuesday. Nadal recovred from a set down to eventually win 4-6,6-3,6-3,6-3 as he strove to ease the painful memories of his past two years in southwest London. After a second-round fall to Lukas Rosol in 2012, Nadal was dumped out by Belgian Steve Darcis in his first match last year. However, the two-time champion who has lost three of his past four matches on grass, is confident history will not repeat itself once again.
“I am going to try to play with the best attitude that I have,” the Spaniard said. “I am practising that way, very positive every moment; playing my best in every moment, working in the things that I really believe that I need to work to play well here. I am feeling better this year than last couple years, seriously,” he says. Nadal’s match follows German Sabine Lisicki on Centre Court after last year’s women’s singles runner-up was given the honour of opening proceedings on what is traditionally known as ladies day, in the absence of the now retired 2013 champion Marion Bartoli.

Ade elated after signing deal with SA’s Moroka Swallows INVITED: Players from the The Nadroga, Fiji’s most successful provincial rugby team will play in Machakos.
Top Fiji players for Masaku Sevens Fiji will send a rich blend of young and experienced players to this weekend’s Masaku Sevens Rugby tournament to be held at Kenyatta Stadium. The squad of 13 members jets in tomorrow and includes the experienced Joeli Lutumailagi, who played professional rugby with French side Narbonne in 2012. Others include Jone Vota and Sitiveni Waqa, who is a career policeman. Other players will be drawn from The Nadroga, Fiji’s most successful provincial rugby team. The players who are part of the Fiji Sevens team will play in Machakos as Tabadamu under Leo Naikasau.
IRBs certified trainer Jale Waqa will be the head coach as the team hopes to capitalise on Fiji’s success in sevens rugby to triumph in Kenya. The team has been assembled by a local fan Pravin Chand who will foot all the bills for the tournament. “This is the first team from Fiji to compete in Kenya. Since Fiji Sevens and its players are known all over the world, I am sure we will put on a good show,” Chand said. “They have competed overseas before and most of them have played on the HSBC Sevens World Series so they know what the game is all about and they know what a tournament is all about,” he said.
gone: Former Gor Mahia striker Kevin Omondi has signed a two-year deal with South Africa’s Moroka Swallows.
Former Gor Mahia winger Kevin Ade Omondi is elated after signing for Moroka Swallows in Absa Premiership, South Africa, on a two-year deal. Ade who left the country last week had initially done trials at Ajax Cape Town and was tipped to join the club. Despite trials at Cape Town, Swallows acted swiftly and handed him a two-year contract, with an option of a further year. “I am really happy, getting an opportunity to play in his league. It’s a milestone for me and I think it’s the best league in the continent, I am really excited,” he said. Swallows are looking to boost their squad after a poor season in which they avoided the relegation/promotion playoffs on the last day of the 2013/14 season. The club has been operating on a shoestring budget after they lost sponsorship by Volkswagen. They have now added the Kenyan international to their squad as they target an improved showing next season. Swallows’ Chief Executive Officer Leon Prins confirmed that the player has signed on the dotted line for the maroon and white-clad outfit. “He is on his way. He is an exciting attacking player who can play as a winger and as a midfielder. We are looking forward to seeing him in preseason.”

Nigeria, Iran eye to join Argentina in next round Bosnia-Herzegovina coach, Safet Susic is not ruling out the possibility of Nigeria beating Argentina when they play tonight in their final group match at Port Allegre. His reasons are that the Super Eagles are a good side and that this World Cup is filled with a lot of surprises. He also thinks Eagles can win because Argentina has already qualified and was likely to rest some players. “I think in this World Cup, any-
body can win. There has been a lot of upsets and surprise results, so Nigeria can win.” “Argentina will likely rest some players because they have qualified. But it depends on who they would like to play in the second round,” he said. Susic said he believes his team lost 1-0 to Super Eagles in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil because of the weather and the bad pitch. He also believes that he lost to a
good opponent. He said his players did not play up to their potential in the tournament, hence his team early exit. A loss for Eagles could spell doom, should Iran beat Bosnia. Elsewhere Iran can still reach the second round by beating the eliminated Bosnians tonight, but they need to do what they haven’t done so far in the tournament — score goals. Iran has faced criticism for its dour defensive tactics after a
0-0 draw against Nigeria in their Group F opener. The Iranians also spent much of their game against Argentina on Saturday packing the defence, but counterattacked well and nearly caused a major upset before conceding a late winner by Lionel Messi. Iran must win to have a chance to go through, while Nigeria only needs a point against Argentina in a game that will be played concurrently.
Exactly four years after their last World Cup meeting, Switzerland and Honduras will face each other under almost identical circumstances. The teams drew 0-0 at the last World Cup on June 25, 2010, a result that led to their elimination. Tonight, both will be playing for a spot in the second round. Another draw could lead to the same consequence, depending on what happens in the other Group E match between Ecuador and France. The Swiss are the seeded team in the group, but they followed up a 2-1 comeback win over Ecuador with a demoralizing 5-2 loss to the French. Honduras, like four years ago, have lost both their opening matches. The next meeting between the two will take place in the heat and humidity of the Brazilian rainforest at the Arena da Amazonia. “Everything is in our hands,” Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. “We still have a good chance of qualifying.” The 65-year-old German plans to end his career after this World Cup, but he came into the tournament expecting to stay longer than the three guaranteed group matches. Hitzfeld, a two-time Champions League winner as a coach, has led Switzerland for six years, rebuilding it from a low point three years ago when the team failed to qualify for the 2012 European Championship.
Deschamps desperate to quell rising expectations on France
If France beats Ecuador in tonight’s Group E match, it will be the first time they have won all three group games in a major competition since 1998 — the year they went on to win the World Cup. This kind of talk worries France coach Didier Deschamps, who captained the side in ‘98 and who has been trying to play down the growing hype after his team’s 5-2 thumping of Switzerland last Friday. French Football Federation
president Noel Le Graet has joined Deschamps in trying to quell rising expectations back home, saying that “things are going quicker than I’d imagined. I think a bit too quickly and there’s a little bit of excess.” Anything but a win against Ecuador will be seen as disappointing, however, considering how France has started the tournament with such attacking intent — scoring eight goals in two games. But Deschamps is wary of dismissing Ecuador, given
how the World Cup is becoming such a wide-open tournament. “Who would think that Costa Rica would be doing greatly in the group they’re in? No one,” he said, pointing to the Central Americans’ surprise wins against 2010 World Cup semi-finalist Uruguay and 2006 winner Italy. “I saw the match between Netherlands and the Australia and there really wasn’t much in it. Other teams have been doing well here, not just us.”
CALM DOWN: France manager Didier Deschamps wants French fans at home to tone down their growing expectations of the team.
Man U set to sign Bilbao forward Manchester United are set to sign Sh4.2b -rated Ander Herrera from La Liga club Athletic Bilbao. The Old Trafford club failed in an attempt to buy midfielder Herrera, 24, on transfer deadline day in the JuneJuly 2013 transfer window. New United boss Louis van Gaal has revived the deal, which could be completed as early as Tuesday. Herrera, part of Spain’s Olympic squad at London 2012, would become Van Gaal’s first signing since replacing David Moyes. His arrival will address long-standing concerns about the strength of United’s midfield, which date back to Paul Scholes’s initial retirement in 2011. Until the arrival of Marouane Fellaini from Everton last summer, the club had not signed a central midfielder for six years. Fellaini has experienced difficulties in adapting to life at Old Trafford and Ryan Giggs’s retirement in order to become assistant to Van Gaal highlights the need to strengthen. United failed in previous attempts to sign the player, which included three imposters turning up at Spanish League headquarters to push through the transfer without the knowledge of either club.

Injured Ambaka out as Paarwater picks his team William Ambaka, the Francebased Kenyan winger, will not be in the squad for the Africa Rugby Confederation (CAR) Cup 1A tournament which starts on Saturday in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The winger sustained a hairline fracture on his ankle during the team’s final training session in Nanyuki last week Head coach Jerome Paarwater is, however, confident the 26 man Kenya XV he named on Tuesday is up to the mark ahead of the World Cup qualifiers. “Ambaka will not be with us in Madagascar. Being a key member of the team we expected him to be there. His injury could not allow him to represent the country sadly,” said the South African. “The team is good in good shape and ready to go. We are going for nothing less than title defence,” he said. Five regular seven-a-side players were included in the Kenyan team who start the title defence against Namibia. They are Andrew Amonde, Lavin Asego, Patrice Agunda, Collins Injera

Led solar lights up Mathare slum pitch Ever been involved in a compelling soccer training session that runs late into the evening and you feel like you don’t want to stop because you just can’t get enough? Whether in the sandy beaches in Sao Paulo Brazil or the greyish corners of a street in Nairobi, football runs deep. Little wonder then that it was all smiles in Mathare recently when the area, which is often in the news for all the wrong reasons, became part of history. It opened doors to the world’s first ever LED solar lit pitch. The initiative undertaken by Philips and the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) saw the firm install solar lit floodlights on a full 7,000 square metre football pitch, the first of its kind in the world. The three-killowat-powered floodlit pitch brought unprecedented relief to who are ardent soccer enthusiasts but who can’t train or play late into the evening due to darkness and security risks. But the situation has now changed. The lighting project turns the grassless pitch into an enviable and inviting venue. Some select teams from the area, which is home to Mathare Youth Sports Academy, got the first taste of the game under the lights.

furious: Striker Yaya Toure has accused Manchester City of denying him chance to visit his ailing brother in hospital.
Striker Yaya Toure has once more hit out at Manchester City, saying the club denied him chance to spend time with his dying brother. The midfielder said he should have spent time with Ibrahim Toure who died last week in Manchester aged 28 after a battle with cancer. And Toure says the Blues denied him the chance to spend time at his sibling’s bedside, instead pressing him to fly to Abu Dhabi for Premier League title celebrations. “I confess that I am still very sad. I’m suffering because I feel I have done nothing useful for him the last few weeks,” he said. “At the end of the season, I wanted to stay for four or five days with my brother before I flew to prepare for the World Cup with Ivory Coast.” Toure and City were at loggerheads at the end of the season after his agent claimed the club did not respect him. “I went to celebrate the title championship in Abu Dhabi while my brother was in his sickbed. By fortune, Kolo was at his bedside.” In his latest interview he added: “After that I blame myself for not insisting and for not leading them to respect me. “However, club officials knew that I had been suffering for a few months seeing the health of my brother decline. “This is the reason I had several injuries at the end of the season. Because my head had taken control of my body.

Gamblers feasted on Suarez bite bet
PAINFUL: Luis Suarez holds his teeth in pain after a clash with Giorgio Chiellini. Suarez is suspected to have bitten the Italian.
Fifa to probe Suarez WC biting incident Football’s world governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Uruguay striker Luis Suarez after he appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 World Cup victory on Monday. For the third time in his troubled career, the 27-year-old has been caught on camera sinking his teeth into an opponent. The striker attempted to explain the outrageous incident by saying: “These things happen in the box. We were in contact, chest against shoulder and I
got a knock in the eye.” Victim Chiellini declared: “Suarez is a sneak and he gets away with it because FIFA want their stars to play in the World Cup. I’d love to see if they have the courage to use video evidence against him. The referee saw the bite mark, too, but he did nothing about it.” In the match,Uruguay scored a dramatic late winner to knock out the four-time winner, Italy. The lone goal was netted on the 81st minute by Godin, who connected well with a corner taken by Luis Suarez.
Betsson, a gambling website based in Malta, had prior to the World Cup match between Uruguay and Italy offered a proposition bet at 175-1 odds that Luis Suarez would bite someone. The bet was based on the premise that Suarez has twice been suspended from his professional teams for biting incidents. One gambler, Thomas Syverson of Trondheim, Norway, put $5.25 on Suarez’s biting someone, and walked away with a
cool $916. Betsson’s sportsbook manager, Andreas Bardun, told ESPN that a total 167 gamblers bet on the bite. The biggest winner was also a Norwegian, who took home $3,300. Sports gambling has a history of odd bets where gamblers bet on everything including the length of the national anthem. But this is probably the first time a bet was placed on biting. And almost definitely the first time it paid off.
Earlier in the game, Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio was sent off for an illegal tackle on Egidio Arevalo. The world governing body will no doubt look unkindly on Suarez, given his long history of disciplinary issues. They have the power to ban any player for as long as two years if they see fit. It is more likely that Suarez will receive a much shorter retrospective ban that could still end his tournament after Monday’s victory saw Uruguay advance to the last 16 at Italy’s expense.
